View Full Version : Golden Demon Diorama

20-09-2005, 12:40
Greetings Warseer.. I have finally come out from hiding in the background! :D I could do with some help/opinions/advice.. I know I have kinda left this to the last minute, though i have been working on it on and off for a while now. My Golden Demon entry for this year, Im thinking of calling it "The Long Road Home" or similar. Basicly, there is a column of wounded soldiers returning from the front lines past a checkpoint, the crew of wich are so used to seeing the wounded pass they no longer pay any attention.

It will be a snow diorama, the road will be very slushy with melted snow, while part of the roof and the tops of the bank will be pure crisp snow, melting down the slope.

Now for the figures..

Feedback please!

20-09-2005, 12:43
Sounds like a nice idea seems to be comming togehter well but do you think you will get it finished in time for golden demon?

20-09-2005, 12:48
i still have time.. *twitches* No sleep for me though..

20-09-2005, 12:49
The concept is great, and the paintscheme as well, but I second Oliver in saying: Will the lads get done in time for GD? If they do, it's dandy, but if they don't... The horror of having to wait another year for revealing your best minis. The horror!

20-09-2005, 12:49
Looks good, so far. I trust the models won't actually be on bases when it's done :)

For the guardsman with the Eldar guardian head, I recommend that you either file down his nose and cheek to avoid the typical sharp Eldar facial features, or that you give him a greenstuff beard or moustache, to make him a bit more unrecognisable. The second you see him you think "Eldar Guardian head", and that's not really a good thing.

20-09-2005, 12:52
Wow thats a cool diorama I can't wait to see it finished. Just a quick question which legs did you use with the Forgeworld Chimera Commander torso?

20-09-2005, 12:53
The base is almost done now. I will be doing something with the eldar head, i wouldnt want any guardsman to look like a pansy Eldar.. they have been through enough trauma already.. :D

20-09-2005, 12:58
The legs are from the basic Cadian sprue :)

20-09-2005, 13:50
CELS: How is this on the Eldar head, I have added slashes and a broken nose, as well as filing down the cheeks..

20-09-2005, 13:56
Definately an improvement! I think I'd still give him some facial hair, but this is pretty good. Maybe your time is better spent elsewhere :D

By the way, is that barrel bonfire? You will be doing some highly awesome ambient lighting then, yes?

20-09-2005, 13:56
Looks good, excellent detail!

20-09-2005, 14:06
I will be doing lighting on the two smoking guys :D If I have time.. I am stuck at work, hence having the time to post. 9 hours of solid painting each night for the next 4 nights should give me time. Also, hopefully a bit of sneaky painting at work while my boss is on holiday... :S

20-09-2005, 14:42
The Eldar head looks fine I think, no facial hair needed but perhaps maybe you could paint some stubble?

Great looking diorama so far mr, I can't wait to see it completed!

20-09-2005, 14:43
Very interesting and cool project. Hope you'll manage to get it done in time!

20-09-2005, 14:49
I'm looking forward to seeing this completed...

great stuff

20-09-2005, 14:55
I was just thinking that it would really add to the theme if you include a new conscript at the outpost who actually is shocked compared to the grizzled veterans.

20-09-2005, 15:01
Very cool, and I mean very cool, best of luck with finishing it, hopefully you'll win a GD, but from what you've done so far, the only problem i can see is a time restraint.

Very very cool.

20-09-2005, 15:10
i'm liking this project and i hope to see the finished thing at GD, but...

what will GW think of using a plastic outpost kit from another company on the base? i'm not too sure abou the specific rules on things like that. they seem to allow bits from other companies, speciafically mitilary kits, but that outpost kit seems a tad recognisable... it'd be easy enough to make one yourself from balsa wood... but if you don't have the time, enter it anyway.

i mean, i don't wanna burst your bubble or anything! good luck with it anyway, very nice figures

20-09-2005, 15:12
A Conscript might be cool, with the white stripe down the helmet.. hmm.. if I have time I might add one at the end :D Thanks, TzeentchGiant, I hope I win something too! :D The slayer sword would look nice on my wall.. heh..

20-09-2005, 15:14
You're most welcome, *crosses fingers for a warseer Slayer Sword*

20-09-2005, 15:17
hmm.. thinking about the outpost now.. I will be covering the walls with maps, and most of the roof will be covered with snow.. and the inside with equipment, so hopefully... we shall see. Ill post more pictures later tonight once the snow is added.

20-09-2005, 16:15
I don't think that the eldar head was so bad. I would have just dirtied up the paint on his face. I've seen several people in real life that look like birds, creepy folk, and very simular to eldar.

I would have made the eldar head some type of office since many office in IG are upper class and the eldars look like snobish IGs to begin with.

20-09-2005, 20:31
Nearly finished with the base... ready to add snow now. Here are the maps on the walls:

and the overall base

20-09-2005, 21:40
Huzzah! Snow added..

Very sparkly and shiny snow, melting into sluch down the slopes as it is trodden into the mud. :D

Feedback please!

20-09-2005, 21:43
pics are blurry, but it looks pretty darned good from what I can see. make sure to make the models suffeciantly winter-effected (i.e. frost on boots and bottom of coats, maybe a little redness in the skin from the cold)

20-09-2005, 21:44
Looks cold to me, cant wait to see it with the guardsmen on. :)

20-09-2005, 21:46
The guardsmen are going to be mainly mud splattered.. and blood spattered for the wounded. I reckon thet there is not much fresh snow left on the front lines, after the fighting.. :) am just about to start work on the equipment for inside the hut

20-09-2005, 22:10
It looks bloody briilliant, although there still does seem to be an awful lot to do.

20-09-2005, 22:14
still a fair bit, yeah.. its only 11.20 pm *twitch* I dont need.. sleeep.. *twitch* I still have 3 days..

21-09-2005, 04:54
The base is looking great and very cold! (Is it chilly in here?)
Hope you can make it.

21-09-2005, 06:54
Love the snow. looks very cold. the dirt blow and poking throuhg looks awesome. get some sleep. You'll be able to see better without tired eyes.

Good luck

21-09-2005, 08:17
The base is just about finished, apart from spme touching up. Now I can concentrate on the men, in which I have 3 more evenings to complete the whole thing. Pics from this morning:

21-09-2005, 08:22
Awesome work with the base. Only thing I'm concerned about so far is the heavy bolter. It just looks a bit... plain? Is the highlighting not showing or something?

21-09-2005, 08:30
needs a bit more highlights, going to bring the armour plating up to the same colour as the cadian troopers armour.

21-09-2005, 08:30
its looking very nice indeed
good luck *shakes hand*

i hope to see this up there.
look out for an elf in the youngbloods section, thats mine, and ill look out for this!

21-09-2005, 09:00
This looks better everytime I see it, it's looking fantastic, that snow effect is so realistic.

21-09-2005, 12:28
Very cool, like the slush effect on the base.

One question with the h.bolter be getting a gunner? If not, if I'm not mistaken, it needs some firing 'handles' to complete it.

Your infantry figures look excellent. Look forward to seeing in in the flesh on Sunday.

21-09-2005, 12:33
Handles!! Thanks, would have forgotten about them. *panics slightly*

Crazy Harborc
21-09-2005, 20:15
I really wish you luck, I hope you take first!! The snow "looks" COLD!!! Good luck with creating those hand grips/handles.

That snow took me back to a winter day long ago. Field survival training in SNOW!!
What we "needed" was hot jungle training!!?? (That part was okay. It was the year and a day AFTER that......that sucked)

Lord of Skulls
21-09-2005, 22:39
You get a pair of handles that should work on the SM Vehicle accessory sprue, just in case you didn't know.

Oh, and wonderful work! Good luck;)

Chaplin Unitas
21-09-2005, 22:51
Looks really good, Munchy. I sure hope you finish it on time.

21-09-2005, 22:54
Thanks guys, Its coming along. The base is finished now.. *fingers crossed*

I left my camera lead at work, so.. pics in the morning I'm afraid. The first guy is onto the base, and its looking good! Have done the oil drum fire, with lighting effects on the coals and the guys hand as he warms it. I have added handles onto the heavy bolter too, the ones from the cadian sprue. Also have added a missile launcher and two missiles propped up inside the post, as I figure they would have some form of anti-tank weapon, just in case something rumbled down the road at them! I have aslo touched up the slush and mud now that the snow has properly dried..

On a side note, how many of you guys are going to GD this year?

22-09-2005, 08:02
I list the way this is going, and I'll echo the Good luck posts:)

I would suggest though, the Heavy Bolter looks too 'ready', still pointing down the road. I guess its too late to have it tilted either to the sky or the ground? That to me would say uncaring or inactivity as well.

Just a thought;)

22-09-2005, 08:12
I will see if I can tilt the bolter slightly downwards. Here are the latest pictures: the lighting effects have not come up too well though on the camera. Any suggestions?

22-09-2005, 08:55
Coming along great

I'm in two minds about going i thinkin of getting me ticket this lunch but i don't know...hmmm!

22-09-2005, 09:52
Looks good, Munchy. Still missing that ambient lighting near the sigarette guy though :)

If only your photography skills were as good as your diorama skills ;)

The boyz
22-09-2005, 09:59
Wow looks really good Munchy. Yeah I agree about the Heavy Bolter, you should try and re-position the gun so that it is pointing upwards or down to the ground. Making it look like they are digging in for a long time and are trying to do other jobs aswell as man the gun.

Good work and Good luck, I hope you get it all done in time.

22-09-2005, 10:53
This is remarkable! I'll have to build an outpost myself, though I'll use it for gaming so no extra models... Very pretty!

22-09-2005, 11:13
Comin' along just fine, I see. I really like the theme... very "dark future". If you haven't painted him yet, I would suggest gouging the eye out on the eldar head. I once made a gash like yours across an eye (of a model!), and found that it looked weird with the eyeball still intact (since the gash is so deep). It's not crucial, and it can be fixed with good painting, but it's far easier to get it to look good without the eyeball still poking out...

Other than that, I have nothing to complain about and, knowing me, that is truly a compliment...

22-09-2005, 11:49
Looks top notch, very very cool, can't wait to see the guardsmen off their individual bases, that would make it seem almost complete.

Also, maybe next time you take pics, have a more direct lightsource shining onto the object, could improve the picture quality.

22-09-2005, 12:11
If your boss is on holiday, sleep while at work! And yeah, heavy bolter pitched up or down, whichever looks better.

22-09-2005, 12:40
Nice job.

The building is from a Italeri kit. I hope that it isn't a problem.

22-09-2005, 12:51
shhhhh! :p

its lookin very nice.

22-09-2005, 16:23
Off home in a minute, looking forward to another 9 hours of solid painting

Nice idea for the Eldar head.. I will take great pleasure in mutilating the eldar scum.. :D

More pictures shortly, with better lighting source :D

22-09-2005, 16:30
the lighting source may be better, but will we be able to see the source lighting better?

coulnt see it in the last pic. is it just not very strong, or was it just a poor pic?

22-09-2005, 17:08
gorgeous! I really like it. what are you going to do with it after the GD?

Just curious

22-09-2005, 17:15
Looking good.

H.bolter firing grips are sweet :D The H.bolter might look best tilted. Are you removing the bases from your minins before attaching to the diorama?

22-09-2005, 17:34
definately removing bases, yes. My picture taking for models is unfortunately not at its best, even aside from the slightly shaking hands due to lack of sleep  I will try my best to get some better ones. Going to tilt the bolter now..

After Gamesday, well.. I dont know! :D Depends what happens I suppose. If I manage to actually win anything, then it might go on display in the Guildford store, I suppose.. hmm.. Or maybe I should ebay it

Anyway.. back to the painting! and Tea.. yes.. More cups of tea.. *twitches*

22-09-2005, 20:16
modified heavy bolter.. Looks better in this position, for sure :D

22-09-2005, 20:20
Definitly does! Yay:)

Good luck!

Crazy Harborc
22-09-2005, 21:21
Gee Munchkin :D I really, REALLY LIKE that cold wet look to the muddy ground!! That position is going to get hit at any second........I can just 'smell it".

22-09-2005, 21:34
Yes indeed. So what remains to do, Munchy? Let's see your to-do-list.

22-09-2005, 21:47
four more figures.. thats it. i have another 2-3 hours tonight, leavign me a few hours sleep before work tomorrow. I will sneak my paints to work, to get the basic colours done. I then have tomorrow evening to finish off. Saturday will be somewhat hectic, I have work during the day, then off from Guildford to Bournemouth for a friends 21st, then a couple hours sleep before driving from Bournemouth to Birmingham for GamesDay.. I think many a shot of caffiene directly into the blood shall be needed on sunday. If any of you come to GD and want to seek me out, just look for the guy asleep in the corner! :D

22-09-2005, 23:58
Huzzah! Second man added, and a third guy now finished. Latest pics:

Headwound on one of the soldiers returning

And the two veterans ignoring the wounded whilst taking a quick cigarette break from guard duty :D

What do you think?

Unseeing Eye
23-09-2005, 00:05
The headwound is amazing! Keep it up, I hope you win a Demon for this.

23-09-2005, 00:27
I might have missed it but what are you using for snow? Hope to see it in WD, its looking great.

23-09-2005, 00:33
the snow is a tutorial im sure i saw on here somewhere.. its a mix of baking soda, pva and water. Comes out nicely and dries rock solid, which is a bonus :D Unless I can find a link, Ill post a copy of the recipe up next week. I have a printout here..

I think I need more tea.

23-09-2005, 05:22
The cigs are *******' huge!

I know how hard they are to do to scale though, youve done an excellent job with them ;)

In fact, excellent job all round!

Alco Engineer
23-09-2005, 05:32
I love the fact that you have stuff in the barrell too. I hate it when people attempt to do burning barrels but there's nothing inside.

Hope you get the gold statue

23-09-2005, 08:21
Thanks guys :D

I need a title for it though. Going to see if i can get a brass plate made up today.. I need some ideas though. I was thinking something along the line of "On The Long Road Home"

Any suggestions?

23-09-2005, 08:23
I don't think the name does it justice but i can't think of anything better. Is it mounted on a base at all?

23-09-2005, 08:33
yeah, tis mounted on a nice wooden base which i will polish up tonight. *ponders on names*

23-09-2005, 08:45
i must say, im liking almost all of it!

the only bit i dislike, is the lighting effect. i think it maybe should be a bit of a duller red/orange. burning bin things dont give off to bright a glow...

other that that, im lovin it! that head wound is just...

*jaw hits keyboard*

'oo 'otta 'ell 'ow 'oo did it *talking withought a bottom jaw*

oh, one other problem. guardsmen dont come back from war! THEY DIE!

23-09-2005, 09:05
:D My Guardsmen always come back. Some of them. Mainly the veteran sergeant, he always comes back from the battle. Normally on a stretcher, awaiting more bionics and his next medal. :p The blood effect i am rather pleased with, a chance discovery I made when i couldnt find some of my normal paints.. the secret is Glass Paint. I dont know why.. it just seems to wash over like real blood. :D Wait til you see the battered guardsman with the slashed face tonight..

Any more thoughts on a name?

23-09-2005, 09:15
Wow, superb, great, amazing, astounding, brilliant.

Very very cool.

23-09-2005, 09:26
Rorks Drift keeps springin in to my head put if you can play with it. It would sound cool.
Maybe something like the "calm before the storm" or "a cold night at the front"

23-09-2005, 09:33
Those aren't cigs, man. They're joints ;)

I actually like "The Long Road Home"...

I agree about the lighting, nurgle boy. Red & orange would be better, IMO.

Munchy, if you want to win a Golden Demon for this, I really really think you should give those shoulder pads another shot. Clearly you have the talent to do better than this.

Other than that, great, great work.

23-09-2005, 09:35
I think it's a good name, but I would skip the "On" if I were you, make it "The long road home"... Sounds catchier, if I may say so. Anyhow, good luck at the competition...

23-09-2005, 12:35
Have just ordered a brass name plate to put on the front: "The Long Road Home"

I will get the figures done, even if it means not sleeping :D

23-09-2005, 12:43
How long will it take for the nameplate to arrive?

23-09-2005, 12:53
will pick it up tomorrow from the shop. The benefits of working in a model shop.. :D You get to know where to get these things done fairly quickly.

23-09-2005, 19:10
Why, all those minies that are done, dioramas completed and getting old. They all will take up space you will need for your next projects. I, I can be persauded to be forced to act as your disposal point/dump. I mean I hate to think of your display points being over crowded. You are going to need the space for the trophies. :D

Go for the gold!

23-09-2005, 19:19
hehe.. I will bear you in mind, Harborc.. Though, this is my first serious warhammer related diorama.. I have done several WW2 ones for work though. Will be posting more pics in a bit, still workign on the four guys. nearly finished armour and clothes.

23-09-2005, 23:47
Here are two more blood spatterd guardsmen.

I still have half on each of two more to do.. if that makes any sense? heh.. just about to do the mud splats on these two. Opinions anyone? Im running out of time!

Unseeing Eye
24-09-2005, 01:53
Probably the pictures but the eyes of the guardsman on the right look a little funny. The bandaged arm is done very well, as is the left guardsman's face.

24-09-2005, 02:52
tis just the pictures.. He is glued onto the diorama now anyway. Along with all except the last two figures whom i will have to finish off at work tomorrow as I can barely see now. Need to grab at least a couple housrs sleep lol. Heres the latest:

Will have to get this finished at work. Time for my 4 hours sleep.. :D

24-09-2005, 03:55
Very interesting concept. Touching, actually!

24-09-2005, 04:44
It might just be the angle, but I'm positivly sure you've put on the hand holding the stock of the gun in the second last picture the wrong way. As in, it should be a left hand, but the thumb is located on the wrong side.

Purge the Mutant!!!

Also, I too would like to know how you did the snow.

24-09-2005, 08:02
The hand is on the right way round :D It is one of the heavy weapons hands. Ill post up the printout of the snow tutorial, i wont take any credit for it though because i am pretty sure it came from here in the first place

24-09-2005, 15:06
*takes a deep breath and downs brushes*

I think I have finished the painting. All that remains is to glue these two to the base and add the nameplate.

24-09-2005, 16:06
Some focused pics would be nice :D

24-09-2005, 17:27
No time for pic taking  I need to practice my photography. Last second pics of the finished thing:

See you all at Games Day!

24-09-2005, 17:55

25-09-2005, 17:55
Well, Im back from GD. Was a very good day in all, though I was a bit disappointed that my diorama dint even make it to the second round.. Ah well. I dont think it helped that it was right at the bottom with barely any light through. Hmm..

25-09-2005, 18:11
Hey, bad luck. It must have been an awesome one that won in that case!

25-09-2005, 18:17
It was ok but not great tho, but try try again is always the thing, better luck nxt year

25-09-2005, 18:36
Hey just got back also,

saw your diorama, it was a shame it was at the bottom but i dont think that would of made much difference as i saw them taking the dioramas out when they were judging them.

I think the biggest problem with yours was it didnt stand out and beg for attention like the others did, regardless its a nice piece and would probubly fetch a pretty penny on ebay if you were to sell it.

Overall i felt the guardsman blended to easily into the darker earth tone and didnt leave you with a concrete outline of what was actually happening, good painting and modelling skills tho,

good luck with next years :D

25-09-2005, 20:12

25-09-2005, 21:20
Darn, very very good attempt, I suppose there's always next year.

25-09-2005, 21:45
Bad luck but the experience will make you better! All the entries were taken out of the cabinets to be judged so it's just the public display that maybe got some bad lighting.

I've know some diorama competition people (not just in GW's world).

Try to remember what attracts your eye, note it down. IMHO, the winners in GW's competitions are often a little, well garish. Darkly realistic is often overlooked.

If you had fun going thru it...........do it more!! The jounrey can often be as good as arriving at the goal.

26-09-2005, 06:05
If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!

26-09-2005, 06:40
Hey, I think you did a great job and its too bad it didn't move to the next round. I think you should keep making them, you do good work and can only get better. I like the realistic feel in the piece!

27-09-2005, 08:40

I wonder what I should do for next year... I may have to do something that ties in with my own guard army. Maybe the veteran sergeant, leading his unit to glory as he normally does. I bought a squad of elysians at gamesday, would it be heresy to chop them up a little bit?
