Please read this post before replying!

Greetings, fellow painters, and welcome to the sixth Tale of 40K Painters monthly update extravaganza!

For those of you who donít know what the Tale of Painters is, look here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/general-project-logs/91272-the-tale-of-40k-painters-working-thread.html). For those of you who are participating, this is the official thread in which you should post the work you have done in the last month. Over the next seven days, participants in the Tale should post the work they have done over the last month. Please also use this thread to comment on the work of the participants or make any general comments about the project.

For your official monthly post, please use the following guidelines.

You should include a description of each unit you have painted, including the number and type of models, and any upgrades or equipment they carry, followed by the total points cost of the unit. Please, DO NOT post the points costs of individual upgrades or models, as GW donít like it and so neither, by extension, do the moderators. If you have painted more than one unit, give the total points cost of your monthly painting endeavours.

Next, please post photos of each unit you have painted, and of the army as a whole. Photos should be cropped or resized to around 1000 by 1000 pixels to avoid scrollbars and ensure the thread doesnít take too long to load.

The rest of your post is up to you. You can say anything you like here, about what you enjoyed or found hard, what you were especially pleased with, etc., etc., and any additional photos you wish to show (although try to avoid multiple posting if it's not necessary). Also, include a link to your painting log here if you have one, so that anyone viewing the thread can give you some feedback if they want to.

Feel free to use this post (http://warseer.com/forums/1790884-post2.html) as a template for your update.

If you have to play a joker, please post saying so, and include a suitably amusing image. If you do not post within the next seven days, then you will automatically count as having jokered December.

Thanks for reading all that. I look forward to seeing your work!

Sam (McMullet)

IG side:

137 points of Baneblade and nothing else. The final details took a bit longer than I expected. and I was working on the space marine side so didn't start something extra during the month for the IG.

Another Joker from me this month, due to a couple of reasons -

-Black and gold is really starting to get on my tits. As much as I love Abaddon and his boys in black, expanding the army past this point seems very unlikley. I don't want to leave the tale but I can't bring myself to paint more chaos marines for a while.

-Second is the ever present greenskin menace. I've got my book, my spearhead and im halfway through my first 5 boys. I can churn these guys out pretty fast, probably at the rate of about 4 boys per Black Legionaire and at the moment, there a damn sight more fun that painting black.

Somebody give me a reason to paint more Black Legion!!!!

ARMY - Ulthwe Eldar

UNITS COMPLETE THIS MONTH

6 Fire Dragons (including Exarch with firepike, tank hunters and crack shot skills) riding Wave Serpent (with shuriken cannon & twin linked missile launchers) - 266 points

Total this month - 266 points

ARMY UNITS

10 Dire Avengers (including Exarch with power weapon & shuriken pistol & defend skill)

Avatar

2 x Vyper Jetbikes (Starcannon & Scatter Laser)

1 x Farseer (Runes of Witnessing, Spirit Stones, Mind War, Guide)

1 x Warlock (Spirit Seer Upgrade, Enhance)

6 x Pathfinders

5 x Wraithguard

6 Fire Dragons (including Exarch with firepike, tank hunters and crack shot skills) riding Wave Serpent (with shuriken cannon & twin linked missile launchers)

CURRENT ARMY POINTS - 1198

BACKGROUND/THEME: Originally played Ulthwe Eldar for many years and bought the new codex and models earlier this year. Saw the "Carnage Tale of X Gamers" on Warseer and the eldar of Rob Peck. Loved the idea & scheme and this gave me the inspiration to start my army in July.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Not very adventurous in the conversion front so most of my figures are "out of the box".

PAINTING:
Took a long time to decide on the scheme. Tried orange, but just looked plain wrong so settled on the yellow helmets/shoulder pads/cannisters, with the black Ulthwe armour to tie in with the rest of the army.
Wave Serpent easier, with the bone strike pattern and red theme to match in with the other vehicles.

BASING:
My friend has designed and produced in plaster a series of bases which match the gaming table we play on. Drybrushed grey, black edges with the addition of static grass plus leaf scatter.

STILL TO DO:
Nothing for these figures.

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Low: Colour scheme - had to paint 3 in full before found scheme that I was happy with.
High: Now back to being on schedule - can I have my Joker back!

NEXT MONTH:
Unit of Guardians with weapon platform and Wraithlord.

Have fun!

Hey all.

Well I jokered last month, but said I'd get an overly large amount of stuff done for this month. Well I managed it, hence having a little to much points wise, I hope thats ok?

Heldane's painting. Month 5 + 6

Units complete.

4 Rhino's - 260 Points
Each armed with 2 storm bolters and extra armour (65 pts each)

5 Assault Marines - 135 Points
Vet with power weapon. (finishes the unit form 2 months ago now, all based, hence pictures of 10)

5 Tactical Marines - 95 Points
Bolters, 1 Plasma, 1 Missile

5 Tactical Marines - 95 Points
Bolters, 1 Plasma, 1 Missile

5 Tactical Marines - 95 Points
Bolters, 1 Plasma, 1 Missile

Total - 680 Points

TOTAL ARMY POINTS - 1554 Pts

BACKGROUND/THEME: I've got an entire companies worth of marines to build and paint, all armed with mk8 errant armour and M40 pattern deathwatch bolters. Originally they were going to be Blood Ravens, but I painted a total of 5 models for them in 2 years, so I changed my mind to Raptors as I fancied doing a quick to paint and underused chapter. I do have plans to complete this force as a complete company with additional support units though.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Rhino's - Forgeworld Extra Armour and second storm bolter. Also ravenwing seals and parchement.

Assault Marines - A couple of basic conversions and weapon swaps to make the sergeant look a little different. The veteran is also a conversion.

Tactical Marines - These three units make each of the 3 tac squads I already own to 10 men, with an option on 2 different heavy weapons. As such the squad leaders are slightly repositioned. Eventually the first 3 tac squads and the first dev squad will have all options modelled to make for flexibility.

PAINTING:

Ogre flesh basecoat, catachan green armour with a mix of VMC ivory and desert yellow added to highlight with 2 drybrushes and 2 line highlights. After that a glaze of catachan green and brown ink. Black was done with either codex or shadow highlights depending on what it was, guns or armour. Metals are boltgun with an armour wash.

BASING:
Rocks made from plaster of paris smashed up, painted grey and drybrushed. Sand is just that, sand. Painted Scorched brown, dry brushed snakebite and then bone.

STILL TO DO:

Hatches for the Rhinos, 9 M40 pattern bolters, 3 plasma guns and squad numbering on all the models in this update

HIGHS AND LOWS:

Low opoints were not being able to get the models comepletely done for this month.

High points were being able to continue on, getting more than needed done to show off and also sitting down yesterday and completing this months entry with the exception of transfer. Yes, you read that right. I'm dont for this month with the single model I painted last night!

Well, heres the piccies.

Good stuff so far chaps!

Norsehawk: Glad to see your Baneblade finished at last, and the painting on the Termies is very smooth.
El-Diablo: How about an Ork-Chaos alliance? Is that allowed under Apocalypse...?
SuavelyDunn: Lovely work as ever. I like the way the Fire Dragons keep the Ulthwť look.
Heldane: Wow, that is a lot of work for a month! I'm not going to object if you want to post it all in one go (I think the "rules" are increasingly going out of the window as time goes along), but feel free to keep back a few of the models to post later if you like.

I have my Carnifex built and sprayed. He'll be 3-coloured by tomorrow.

@ norsehawk - nice work on those termies. I love how well your colour scheme works.

My chaplain's done up to at least 3 colours, but he's not had his highlights done yet.
I lent my camera to my uncle last thursday and I've not got it back yet, so I can't post pics yet.
I may see him tomorrow, but if not I will have it back tuesday afternoon/evening. So I'll update with pics then.
I've got a fair bit of work to do for uni over monday and tuesday, but if I get time before I get my camera back then I'll pretty him up before I take photos.

Woo! Now my army has an HQ choice :D

EDIT:
My internet's been down for days, but has finally soared from it's ashes and I have it back again.

He looks a little messy because I added a lighter layer to the bones and parchment earlier today before I took the pics and havent tidied him up yet.

AnkhAngel's Homebrew SM chapter: Ankh Angels

TOTAL PAINTING FOR DECEMBER: 190 points

TOTAL ARMY POINTS: 748 points

PAINTED THIS MONTH: Master of Sanctity Chaplain with artificer armour, master-crafted plasma pistol, power fist, terminator honours (190).

BACKGROUND/THEME:
Coming eventually.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Straight out of the blister pack.
No conversions on this guy.
All I did was stuff a bit of green stuff into a crack that was left where his right arm joins his body, and sculpted it to look like an extra bit of under-arm ribbing.

PAINTING:
Probably one of the darkest models that will be in my whole army (except for the other chaplain I'm putting in).

Sprayed black.
Astronomican grey on the bones and parchment.
Boltgun metal on the metal parts.
A mix of brazen brass and burnished gold on the crozius, winged-skulls wings and crux terminatus.
A coat of skull white with some bleached bone mixed in, on bones and skulls.
A coat of bleached bone with some skull white mixed in, on the parchment.
On the seal on his leg, scab red with a dab of fortress grey, then liche purple with a dab of fortress grey.

[just before picture was taken, slightly lighter mixes of bleached bone and skull white on the parchments and bones.]

STILL TO DO:
Tidy up the black and re-attatch the backpack (and do the base, same as all the infantry in my army so far :p epp).

HIGHS AND LOWS:
It was nice to paint a character. Haven't done one since I did a captain for my old salamanders.

The only low was my ISP deciding that I didn't need the internet for over a week.

Not sure what to do this (Jan) month. I've amassed quite a few bits and pieces over the holiday. I might be hard pressed to get a whole squad done due to lots of uni work. But I think I'll probably try and do the half finished speeder and either my sniper scouts or some devastators.

:( Sorry to hear that. Best of luck at college.

On to my update...

McMullet's Custard Nids

UNITS COMPLETED THIS MONTH

1 Carnifex. Equipped with two pairs of Scything Talons; upgraded with Adrenal Glands (both sorts), Reinforced Chitin, Flesh Hooks and Tusks. 137 points.

TOTAL POINTS THIS MONTH: 137 POINTS

CURRENT ARMY POINTS: 1010 POINTS

BACKGROUND/THEME:
Nids in the ruined Imperial city in the desert. Or something.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Completely bog standard fex I put together over two evenings.

PAINTING:
Err. 3 colours and that's it. Sprayed white, cobra leather on the exoskeleton, red gore on the... red bits, black on the black bits. Mix of smokey ink and black, watered down, over all the non-black bits to give some texture.

BASING:
I've gone for the "GW base sprayed white with some paint splodges" effect.

STILL TO DO:
Lots.

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Getting something done in a weekend.
Lows: It looks like c**p and I have to do another 500 points like that before I can go back and sort them out.

NEXT MONTH:
I'll be posting 500 points of half-painted models like this one. After that I'll either spend a month tidying them up or maybe take some time off and work on my Lizardmen.

It would appear that I am required to post a Joker this month. Here's to hoping I can get something done for January now...

With house reno's and Christmas, and Work and all the other stuff going on, I was unable to do more than basecoat a single marine. The rest are still in black, and the bases haven't been started yet... I definitely want to get the devastators done this month, and hopefully, I can get some bikes finished up as well.

McMullet

Iziuth's small Eldar force

UNITS COMPLETED THIS MONTH

1 Fire Prism with the works (holo field, spirit stones and vectored engines) 180 points

TOTAL POINTS THIS MONTH: 180 POINTS

CURRENT ARMY POINTS: 750 POINTS (570 + 180)

BACKGROUND/THEME:
No theme yet.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
None getting it fitting was challenging enough. Gotta love the old metal and plastic hybrids ;)

PAINTING:
Purple, Purple and Purple. Looking at it it does look at little purple. Maybe some more bone colored accents???? (any tips would be greatly appreciated

BASING:
none other than the standard skimmer one

STILL TO DO:
It need touching up and some accents as metioned earlier

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Getting something done.
Lows: Painting a vehicle! Haven't painted one in ages and never a xenos one before so this was quite challenging. Especially with a standard brush.

NEXT MONTH:
Next month (or more like this one) I want took make the army reach a respectable legal status by adding a troop choice. I have already basecoated a lot of guardians and hope to finish them by the end of the month.

Now on to the pictures. (one crappy one)

Joker!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/Ildred/GW/joker2.jpg

Due to at first a nasty head cold followed by a newfound delight in being warm, last month i saw virtually none of my basement, and by extension, my painting area. Only today did I start painting again. It's coming along well, and January's work may scrub out this joker, we'll see.

I've only skimmed through the rest of the thread, but everything looks great; I'll take a closer look later.

McMullet
12-01-2008, 15:11
Thanks for checking in guys. :)

I think that's 7 days or so since the thread was opened so submissions are sort of, informally closed. I'm still waiting to hear from 4 painters: Frgt/10, greyclaw, Marksekay and Silvereye. If any of you guys are still alive and not trapped under heavy objects, as Harry would say, then do please check in. Particularly Frgt/10, as a no show this month will put you on 3 jokers.

Unsurprisingly, December was a bit of a quiet month: Once AnkhAngel has posted up his work we'll be on (I expect) around 2050 points for the month, and 8 jokers. Still, at the six-month mark we've so far painted a couple of hundred points shy of 15000 so far between us, slightly less than 1000 each ( on average) which is about where we should be. We've also played an average of 1Ĺ jokers apiece (24 in total).

I'm still working on building my Lictor and the rest for this month. I bought some primer today which is something. How are the rest of you getting on?

Wow, over a week since the last post!

I now have the remaining 488 points of my X-Legion army assembled and undercoated, with a substantial part of painting the bases completed. The base is one of the most important parts of the model, and is usually a quicker job so I'm doing them all first. Hopefully they'll draw attention away from the lack of work on the rest of the models...

Thoth62
23-01-2008, 17:39
I may as well update too. At this point I've been bogged down by work, renovations and others, so I only have the grey basecoat done on my devastator squad. I'll hopefully get the bases assembled and primed, if not painted as well, tonight, and then that'll be it untill Monday, when I can hopefully get at least 2 more colours onto the marines. But we'll see what shape I'm in after tonight.

McMullet
28-01-2008, 09:49
How's it going now Thoth (and others)?

I've got 8 more hormies to do tonight, plus a couple of bases, and that'll make 500 points of half-finished models for this month.

Meticulous
28-01-2008, 17:10
Still where I was last post. Ironically, I do more work when college is in session, so I should be able to pick up the pace and get this current squad done in time.

Thoth62
28-01-2008, 17:28
Trouble. I got all but one of the bases assembled, but I haven't yet applied the sand or slate to them, let alone prime them. I hope to do that tonight and then get on with painting. The theory is that I'll have at least 3 evenings this week to work on them, so I should be able to get the 3 colours applied that I need.

I'm still very optimistic though, provided I don't get distracted by anything...
