I've recently become interested in the promises of a game system that really requires thinking, and decided to check out Epic. Unfortunately, I can't download the 5th section of the rulebook (seems to be the one with army lists :(), so I'm having to use variants. I decided to make an Armoured Company, and figured that I could use Steel Legion rules. I don't actually have the rules for any of the units, but I've heard that Epic is very well balanced, which means I should be okay taking anything, so I picked some cool stuff that would be fun to collect. So I made this list.

Tank company with Vanquisher - 650
Artillery company with 9 Basilisks - 650
3 Baneblades - 500
3 Shadowswords - 500
3 Hydras - 150
4 Sentinels - 100
4 Sentinels - 100

Comes out to around 2700pts, which I hear is the standard.

A few questions -
1. Can Leman Russes and Sentinels be configured to have anti-tank weapons? I get the feeling that I'm going to need some of them.
2. Am I missing any important rules from the 5th section, or is it just army lists?
3. Are armoured companies considered to be average power, weak or too good?

1 - The Sentinel only comes with a Multi-laser as standard in Epic... however, the Leman Russ is an Anti-Tank machine! A battlecannon and a Lascannon on each tank gives you 20(!) anti-tank attacks on 5's and 4's with one shot (The Vanquisher cannon) hitting on a 2!

Compare that to a pair of tactical marine detachments (roughly equivilent in price) which can lay down a measly 12 anti-tank attacks, hitting on 6's....

2 - You're missing all the rules, and you have all the army lists.

Allow me to explain:

Section five contains all the individual unit stats.

The section you have contains the three army lists from the core rulebook.

The Steel Legion army list is the 'generic' Imperial Guard army list for Epic (Even though it claims to be armoured-regiment focused, it's actually very generic, allowing almost any style of IG army list).

3 - Average to good.

Good decision to go with Epic :)

Have a look at the handbook, fan-produced with updated rules: http://www.tacticalwargames.net/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=69;t=11218;hl=handbook

The handbook above should contain all of the unit rules you need!

Awesome, thanks. Good to see that I have some solid anti-tank there.

Another pair of quick questions, I see that Forgeworld sells Baneblade variants that aren't in the book. Are there rules for them, or should they just be counts-as models? Similarly, are there rules for their Leman Russ variants? I'd like to have some variety, because I'm planning on making a REALLY BIG armoured company and I'd like to have more than generic Russes.

Secondly, I can't see if GW still sells Epic models. Is it now entirely the domain of Forgeworld and eBay, or am I missing something? I ask mainly because I couldn't see the normal Leman Russ Battle Tank in Forgeworld, and I'm going to be needing some of them.

You can either count them as Baneblades/Shadowswords, or use appropriate WYSIWYG stats (They're all pretty easy to work out, as all the weapons on them except the Stormsword's main cannon exist elsewhere in Epic. In the case of the Stormsword cannon, BP3, Ignore Cover, 30cm range, seems about correct).

You may want to right-click and download this: http://www.warseer.com/firebase/download/FB05/Mossino.pdf

It's a fan-made suppliment for the Death Korps of Krieg in Epic (Written by me and some other chaps). It includes the most commonly accepted set of stats for the Stormblade and Stormsword super-heavy tanks.

If you're really into your tanks, you won't go too wrong by using this fan-written army list: http://elf.planetquake.gamespy.com/Epic/ArmouredRegiment1.6.pdf

At the least, the tank stats will help you in your quest to use FW's tanks. No official rules exist.

Ah, I see. The Australian online store no longer has any specialist games stuff. Looks like I'll be ordering the entire army from the UK. Still, the models shouldn't weigh too much, so hopefully the postage should be cheap. It's still a pittance compared to buying a mainstream game army, at around 2/7 of the price if I get the entire army from Forgeworld, who as everyone knows charge a large amount.

Seeing as I'm going to be playing with Epic with friends if I can convince them to play it (only friend I talked to was very interested once he heard about the price :)), fan lists shouldn't be too much of a problem if they're balanced.

The best price argument in favour of Epic:

- It costs less to buy Two Battle Companies of Marines for Epic than it costs to buy One Tactical Squad for 40k.

How much is a tactical squad nowadays? :p Im still old skool...when those things cost 35 gulden. (€15, $22) Ah those were the days...

Wait...I checked the GW site...€30 nowadays huh! Inflation is scary!

Two Hundred Epic Marines (Including Devestators, Assault and Tactical squads) are 12.

Ten 40k Tactical Marines are 18.

20 euros for 2 companies isnt bad at all! Temptation to actually just go order Epic stuff is increasing...I will become the laughingstock of my new roommates! :D

From Australia it is pretty cheap to buy Epic stuff from the US online store. Conversion works out better. GW US is really good for customer service!
