Yes that's right, i'm joining the many on here who have started a Cities of Death project log. Who know's how far it'll go, hopefully quite far as I already have a 100 box of CoD buildings on it's way to me!

Anyway, here's the plan, nothing to crazy really. A 6x4 Ft board, so 24 1x1 Ft panels of MDF, I don't actually have the MDF yet, but i'm thinking it should be a CM thick. It shouldn't bend much then but if anyone knows any different let me know!

Here's how the panel's will work out:

12x Panels will be GW CoD Buildings.
5x Panels will be some kind of roads i'll make.
1x Panel will be a small town square complete with statue and crashed gunship.
1x Panel with more gunship wreckage
5x Panels of i'm not sure yet, i'm asking my friends for ideas. But i'm thinking Forge World bunker entrances, or probably some actually empty space otherwise there will be no room for miniatures!

I've been painting some today, i've only painting the actuall metal etc, no point painting the ground until I can intergrate it into the board. It looks really good normally but as always when you zoom in with your macro it looks horrible, it will look much better when its with the rest of the board..

Not as picture heavy as I was hoping, but oh well!

Anyways, to mayhaps give you some advice. At our club we use 8mm thick MDF. Our panels are 30cm by 30cm, and they don't bend. The bigger ones, 60cm by 60cm do, so perhaps, if you want to go that big, you should go for 1cm. Otherwise, 8mm is fine, and probably weighs a bit less. Hope that helps...

Anyways, your crashed ship looks nice, if your buildings look as sweet, you're gonna have a really cool city soon.
Check out my log, perhaps you'll find some inspiration. There are several other, REALLY SWEET, logs in here too, check them all out!

Cheers!

not bad...
the gravely bits could use a little bit of drybrushing
then it would look a lot better. :D

Haha, it will be pic heavy eventually!

Ok yeah i'll go for 1cm, I was a little worried to be honest as to how much it was going to bend so better to be safe than sorry!

Your board is veeeery nice, I may have to 'borrow' some ideas from it!

Oh like I said mate, none of the ground around it is getting done until I integrate it with the board, and then i'll drybrush it all together! :D

Today i've built a couple of buildings for it, for some reason decided to roughcoat in my cellar, resulting in my head now feeling like its about to explode!

This is how many sprue's you get in the CoD city box, I thought it was a lot until I remembered Dav0r's CoD board with about 3x this amount!

Well i've painted my first building (if you can call it that) as a tester, it came out ok I think..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/AGERSTONE/17-1.jpg

The rest won't be painted until i've attached them to the MDF and done the rubble etc around them. Which brings me onto what I purchased today..

Cork Boulders - High Grade 2

Terrain Board Natural Stone 4mm 2

Gunmetal coloured 15m Craft Wire 1

Vallejo Grey Pumice 3

Rubble Rocks 4

That should keep me going in regards to rubble stuff.

C&C welcome as always :D

Looks good! I can't wait to see more!

I'm inclined to agree with N810. I think the wreck of the ship would "pop" more if the land area around it were dry brushed a bit. The wreck it's self looks great!

if you read the posts carefully you would see tht he mentioned twice tht he is not painting the earth untill he has attached it to the gaming board so tht it all remains uniform and can be drybrushed together, it also means he will be able to blend the pieces into the board so they look like theyre part of it not just stuff shoved ontop

it all looks gd atm I can't wait to see more :D

Hard to tell.. The idea is great, the only thing that's bothering me is if that model fits.. In my oppinion, you should look for some model that doesn't look "in-action" if you understand.

But, I could be all wrong about this to.. As I said, hard to tell when it's not finished. :/

Yeah I know what you mean, i'm not sure what models there are where the figures aren't in action poses. I mean you see a lot of WW2 statues with soldiers 'mid battle' as it were. I tried to get one that at least looked like he was posing a bit, hmm!

Make sure you add another row of floor tiles for at least the first floor of the buildings. Most of my COD buildings have single rows and it can be a bit annoying trying to get models to fit in under the floor above with such a small surface. Especially when you're trying to remove models from a combat.

Looking forward to the rest of this log.

I think I know what you mean, so instead of the 4 tiles on the 1st floor as there is at the moment, you mean attach another row so there is a total of 8tiles on that floor?

Just want to double check before I start attaching things to things! :D

Also, can I ask how you did the pile's of rubble in your table? Like glueing it down etc

I would go for a Celestine with folded wings (if you can find any) for the statue, think it'd look very good rather than someone pointing a bolter

if you want a static space marine look on ebay for some old space marine models, they literally do look like statues I have a few im talking pre possable ones. But i like the idea of the winged celestine would look awsome. I would say for the buildings make some a bit more complete not totally but maybe have three sides or even four with a chunk out of the corner but remove more wall as it goes up so u can fit models in. lookin good tho :D

I helped him with it, so I think I'm ok to say that Aenimosity's CoD rubble was sprue (cut up with aircraft shears, brilliant tools, but secateurs or heavy scissors would probably work) mixed with clay kitty litter liberally poured over straight PVA wood glue. After drying they got a couple of coats of watered down wood glue. Easy and simple. :)

Some of the bigger piles got some flat material under it to bulk up the rubble a bit, I think it was foamcore from memory.

Ok yeah, i'll have a look for them, I think I want something warrior like though! Although who says there has to be one statue ;)

Yes! Forgot about that actually, got some of the old school Marines at home actually. And the building yes i'm planning to do two big buildings that aren't quite as damaged! In fact i'm doing one later!

Though a circular saw is good, a jigsaw will work fine. you just need a strong table to support it. I myself used a backyard picnic table and it work out great. Just make sure to get someone else to help hold down the MDF because the jigsaw will make it vibrate and bounce around.

As for getting a jigsaw, I bought mine at a local Home Depot for $30 CAN, its noisy as hell but works great.

you can get a cheep one for about 15 for focus,

or take the wood back get your cash back and go to a timber yard, and get it cut by then, more accurate.

for 22 i got 2 bits off 4'x8' chopped into 1'x1' 2'x2' and 1'x2'.

remeber to take into acount the width of the saw blade, its about 4mm for a circular saw. which over a 6' board can add up to 20mm gap at one end.

also clamp a straight pice off wood over what you are cuting and use that a a guide to run the saw down. the built in guide dont go to 1'

YOu do know MDF particle board is highly pionsonous to cut and you need a room with very good ventiliationa and must wear a mask.

BBQ? the place you got it from wont cut it and most hardware stores have a policy of not cutting it due to that. I know ours did.

That being said, some have special rooms.

But do not underany circumstances cut it without a mask and good ventaliation

Yayale
24-05-2008, 12:16
it's not poinsones and just cut it outside. It just because due to the way its made from wood dust and paint lots of dust comes off which you inhale and if you are asmatic or do it a lot it can bugger up ure lungs a bit, I would advise wearing a mask though.

Very nice terrain. I've recently had the pleasure of getting my City table to the point of being presentable. I didn't read thur the list of materials you used to make debris, but i might be able to help ya out a bit. Grab yourself a putty knife and a small bucket of Poly Fix (its a LePage product, used for smooth wall crack filling). With polystrene foam, bit and peices from the Imperial sector box, sand, gravel, and some imagination it turns out really nice. Give me a few minutes here to get a picture to post. (grabs camera)

ack, took longer than i thought it would. Anyways, the polyfix method might be a little quicker (also frees you up while the polyfix dries)

First we have a bit of debris inside of a building, two small chunks of foam, coated in polyfix. Stick all sorts of bits into it and than pour the sand on. Let dry, than paint.

Next we have a Street section with a gun emplacement. Same concept for making this as the other.

Pretty much done the first board now, just need to get the rest of the floors rough with a mixture of sand and roughcoat spray!

Right, bit more progress on the boards, going slow but doing what I can when I get time..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/AGERSTONE/1-5.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/AGERSTONE/2-5.jpg

The board looks a bit dodgy in this one, all the bits without sand will be touched up so its all covered.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/AGERSTONE/3-4.jpg

And there's going to be more rubble on far board.

I'm actual going to paint one of the boards as a tester to check the rubble looks right etc before I build another 18 of them, that should happen tonight so I will hopefully have pics tommorow!

I really like them, for the other boards though I would say don't cover the whole thing in sand, it's a city so there would be broken up roads aswell. Use thick card to make roads and you could even cut paving slabs for the pavement, then add bits of rubble and broken slabs, maybe the odd crater.

I think it will make an awsome board when finished though.

I am planning too yeah, i'm using card for some roads and i've got some plasticard for some other bits and bobs too.

The problem is because the woods all cut dodgy the roads may not meet, I didn't really think about that after I cut the wood wrong, didn't think it would be a problem as everything was still square so it would meet up. Not sure how i'm going to counter it yet to be honest :eyebrows:

I was going to keep it secret but you nearly had it anyway...:D

Its easy, first undercoat black (Duh!) then do a couple of drycoats using the Adeptus Battlegrey. Then do one drycoat using Astronomicon Grey on the ground and buildings. Leave the ground with one drycoat of Astronomicon but do a couple more of the rubble/buildings etc so it makes them stand out more!

Sorted!

looking great when finished it will be an awsome board. When you out them together it shows how the tile have a lot going on but are not overcrowded so they look fine put together to make dense areas or with other plainer boards to make a less dense more open city area. I like the nurgle they look pretty gd, I wouldnt strip them just add some new models instead, or it may just be the photo but it doesn't look like theres any shading just black lining so you could give them a darker wash, it will make them look better.

yay!! I've missed you :D
Also how many tiles are you doing again? I've got it in my mind it's twenty four but the six you've already done would make an ok sized gaming board by the looks of it so is it 12 tiles?

It's 20 tiles, 4x5 table in the end, probably keep adding to it though..

Here it is, will get some better pics up tommorow. To be fair they all look the same after a while..

it adds to the realism that its not hovering perfectly level. :)

also the layout in general is prety kool.

I 2nd N810, that droopy floor section looks good, a few small details would help as well, like discarded weapons, old crates etc, something with another colour apart from grey, some of those Posters from GalenArtorius would be nice and easy!

I really like the choice of colour, it has a really grim and foreboding feel to it, that said some details in different colours would enhance it more; torn proclamation posters, oil drums, the odd section of sandbags. The piece of crashed shuttle has this perfect effect for providing another shade of colour.
I'm getting my head into the right place for a attempting a similar project, could you tell me what thickness of MDF you are using for your base boards and are you happy with it in regard to any warping etc.
Congrats on a great looking board.

Thanks for the kind words and comments gents.

I'll definately be adding some colours, mainly by posters and things. I will be adding barrels and stuff but they won't be attached, just we can block off certain parts when we want. So the final thing will be broken up a bit I hope! :D

This board is looking great, I am truly jealous of your modelling and painting skills. I have 2 of the CoD buildings and was thinking about ideas, this has certainly given me some, it also helped me figure out how to paint them (ATM they are just black undercoated sprues :p )

I second that motion. What is the thickness of the tiles? When I made my cities of death table, the tiles all ended up getting warped from the glue. I'm a bit unhappy with the paintjob I gave everything as well, so I'll be redoing my board when I'm done with my nids (read: in about ten years)

This is all I could find on the first 3-4 pages:

<snip> 24 1x1 Ft panels of MDF, I don't actually have the MDF yet, but i'm thinking it should be a CM thick. ...
Just wondering if that's the thickness you ended up buying.

hmm i dunno I think he did say later on what it was I think it was 1cm thick tho, I think I've heard somewhere that 8mm is gd without reinforcing bars. Don't take my word on it though I would hate your board to warp.

Yeh if I had the money and space I would love to make some boards.

I have very little money and even less space but I've decided to take the plunge into making some terrain. If you plan it out well enough you'd be supprised how little space it actually takes up.

Haha mate your only a few days behind me, i've just started this up again after stopping for a few months.

In the end I went for 9mm - for no reason other than they had no 6mm MDF left and couldn't be bothered with another trip!

To be honest a lot of the ideas/inspiration are stolen/borrowed from your board Dav0r - infact I was looking earlier at how you painted your statue! :D

Right after painting the statue I realised that the pillar thing that it stands on it too big for the model, it looks stupid so i'm going to have to get a larger Inquisitor figure. I am planning on using the SM for something else though, as well as a few of his mates!

Have you thought about painting the interiors of the buildings a different colour. If you do this it will add colour to the board and seem more realistic as people don't tend to live/work in buildings with bare concrete/stone walls, they decorate them.

Also what about posters and graffiti along the walls. I recall there being a terrain log with some pdfs or links for posters somewhere around here.

Hey dude, nice work so far.

If I could just add something that seems a little odd to me... The column that the statue sits on is hollow which would be a bit weird for something like that. Is it possible for you to fill it in at all?

I'm glad that I'm subscribed to this thread. I really want to redo my COD board someday and this is a good place for motivation/ideas.

Yeh I think the pillar needs to be solid as it is meant to be stone by the looks of it.
As to colour I wouldn't add to much, remember when playing on the board the models will add colour. The majority of paint would have been weathered or blasted off, also the imperium is often known for it's blandness.

Stupid piece of crap gluegun is broken, I left it on all night by accident so I need to get a new one of those but have NO money for a week or so.

The building should be preeeetty big, it will sit in the middle of the table and you can enter from both sides so there will be some 'epic' battles in the middle of the ruins. The building will be split onto all 4 tiles and you just put the tiles together to complete it.

Also, i'll be selling this board once i've played on it a couple of times! So PM me any offers haha.

I do kind of regret not being able to do this, I was playing with lots of ideas and I actually built it and took it down a few times with steps. The building is so big I couldn't do it with steps because all 4 of those tile's come apart. I was getting just to complicated with steps + keeping it modular.

I do plan on a high statue with lots of steps leading up to it though on a seperate tile- should be a good objective and make for some cool looking battles.

I tried painting the eagle on the front bronze a couple of time's but it looked rubbish - so I had to cave and paint it the same as the rest. I don't have time to spend aaaaages on it!

Maybe paint the eagle a deep red with gold trim, I think that would look nice and make it stand out. At least make it a different shade of grey to the rest of the building so it stands out a bit more at any rate.

I will do something like that yeah, if I had all the time in the world I would spend day's painting each tile but realistically I don't! I have too much other stuff to do too, it takes me hours to make each one as it is!

One thing I've notice is that where you put the piles of rubble, because the glue, rubble mix is so thick it has clearly defined edges. It looks a little unatural to me. Maybe going round the edges once dry with a bit of PVA and sand watered down to blend the rubble into the ground a bit more would look good.

Liking the new tile, interesting idea with the door, also the gantry is good :D

Yeah I know what you mean, there's a million things I would do differently. Once i've finished this one i'm actually thinking about doing another, doing a lot of things differently this time around.
