Would like people who have played both games to inform me of their views for and against each systsem.

I want to start playing one of these and cannot decide which.

What is the average size game?
How much is it going to cost me for models, etc...

Any tips on anything would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I strongly prefer AI over BFG, but i really prefer AI over every other game GW makes. The rules for AI are so neat and for lack of a better word "perfect".

Ill admit i only have a few BFG games under my belt, but The weapons batteries chart is horrid, and there is just alot to keep track of, as well as a few rules that i feel really dont correctly model they way stuff "really" works.

After 5 games you will have most everything you ever need for an AI memorized.
I think the only thing that deters people from AI is the high initial cost of rules. As far as models go i would wager that they are pretty close to the same with the favor going to AI. I scratch build most my stuff and that cuts down on the cost alot.

The games for AI range anywhere from 60-200 points.
The BFG games ive played have ranged from 1K - 3K, but around our game shop the standard is 2000.
I also think AI is much less prone to cheesing out army/fleet list.

At the risk of sending this thread even further down the inevitable 'its your money, you decide' route, I have to disagree.

BFG is an excellent game. The rules are simple without being simplistic, and the firepower table is elegant. I am not sure that I understand by a lot to 'keep track of' at all. Few counters on the board and almost no paperwork.

In the end, which set of models do you prefer? Pick that game. :skull:

As far as "alot to keep track of" i just mean that when i play BFG, i usally just end up with far more paper on the table then i do when i play AI. Maybe that is just me.

I do enjoy playing/modeling/painting for both games.
I think i just enjoy AI alot more because i feel its a better game system.

I have to respectfully disagree about the firepower table being "elegant".
That is your opinion and i dont think i will sway you from it but here are My Opinions on the WB table.

A) The Weapons battery table takes into account size of target, across hundreds of thousands of kilometers of space, I think if the target vessel is a battleship or escort seams neglagable.

B) Weapons battery takes “speed of target” into account based solely on its bearing, not on how fast it is actually moving. A capital ship moving abeam at 10cm speed is just as easy to hurt as if it were moving 30cm.

Ask around your shop and see if someone will demo both games for you. Alot of people who play these games have 2 armies, see if the would let you borrow one and play thru a small trial game. Even just show up and watch a few, that will give you a good idea of how they play.

Atleast thats how i would decide.
