View Full Version : My journey in scratch building (Or how I didn't blow too much money on a Macharius)

18-04-2008, 00:38
When the Macharius came out I was getting back into the game. It made me want to put a lot more into my IG army. I like the standard Cadian troops but really liked the new tanks being given to DKOK. So wanting to add some new armour to my army I found a template for the Malcador, and decided to scratch it. It turned out pretty good, and I'll post some pics later (sorry no wip), but I wanted a heavier hitter, but not the Baneblade. I've seen too many, and I don't like the style as much. Then I found the Macharius. I think it is by far the best looking tank available. Low slung, and armed to the teeth, it's what I want to be the mainstay of my armour. Now I personally like building, and am rather stingy, so I figured I could build it. I found a few kit bashed ones on here and else where, but not any completed scratch builds. Starting with the pics FW released of it, and now the drawings in IA IV I've started. I just took some pics, and wish I had done some more, but I'll be taking more as I get work done, and post them up.
37749 This is all that I have done so far. I'm waiting on some tread from a Tiger tank to put the sides all together.
37750 I never realized how much effort would go into doing rivets like this. Their all plastic rod...you know how it works.
37751 I'm especially happy with how my sponsons worked out. On the Malcador I didn't want to put the effort into making it actually move, but I figured out a good way for these.
37752 This is the business end of the hull. I'm happy with how it turned out, but there will be a dozer blade added, that is after I get a lot more of the skeleton of the hull done, and after a few million rivets are put on.
That's it for now. I'll keep up on this as best I can.

18-04-2008, 00:43
Just so you know this is in the wrong section, a mod will move this in a second.

Just so you know this is in the wrong section, a mod will move this in a second.
Thanks, I didn't realize that.

18-04-2008, 01:12
Great start, I built one a month ago,but didn't scratch build the track assembly. I wish I had afterwards though. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.

18-04-2008, 01:48
Moved. :p

I will be watching this for sure. Having two Macharius's and looking into a third i think scratchbuilding may be a viable option.

This is vrery impressive. I am quite impressed at the detail you managed to get on the sides of the tank hull so far. Very good stuff. I'm rather impressed with it and my eye shall certainly remain on this one for a while.

18-04-2008, 14:07
Looking good. I'd like to see some pictures of the Malcador as I'm thinking of scratchbuilding one myself. Any tips on how you did it would be useful as well.

19-04-2008, 02:22
I should be have some pics of the malc this weekend. I built it using a template, can't remember where I got it, but it was a lifesaver. It is for the defender with the 5 heavy bolters, and I plan on doing at least two more probably with battle cannons. Those will need some modification straying from the template, but it will be a huge time saver. I'll try to remember where I got it.

19-04-2008, 02:36
Holy crap, goldlike. Nice work!

20-04-2008, 23:56
Here are some pics of the Malcador I did. The paint isn't all done on it yet, but I've been working more on the Mach than anything else. That's on hold right now, because I'm waiting on my treads to come. Hopefully they get here soon. I think with the Mach I'm going to do two different turrets so that I can change from all three variants. The battle cannons and vanquisher cannons will interchange. That way I'll only build two, I want the mega bolter turret to look like the FW one with the hatch in the middle.

23-04-2008, 15:05
Well my tread came in yesterday for the Mach, so I'll be working on it again. Since I'm doing this all based on pictures and what I wanted, I needed the exact dimensions to be able to continue on the body of the tank. I'm using tread from a 1/35 Tiger tank, they are just what I wanted as far as the width, and just about right all around. Once I get some more work done I'll post the pics on here.

27-04-2008, 14:18
Sorry about all my posts being in a row, there aren't really any responses. Oh well though. I have gotten some work done on the Mach. Problem was I screwed up some stuff on the hull and had to rip it apart. Now, fixed. I think if all goes well I can probably get it all done today, aside from stuff like the rivets, and minor detailing. With work and all I think I can start getting paint on it by this next weekend.

27-04-2008, 20:15
more pics:
The treads are from a 1/35 Tiger tank. I really like the look of them, and they are the perfect size for the Macharius.

02-05-2008, 06:49
It's looking really good. Yours will look much more like the Forge World one than mind does. I order a bunch of tiger I and panzer IV treads today too. All for future projects. I'm working on a bomber for now. You are doing great, I'll be watching.

02-05-2008, 12:08
Awesome. Loving that Malcador. Keep up the good work!

03-05-2008, 22:34
Unfortunately work is going to be halted on the Macharius for a little while. I'm moving next week, and don't have any time to work on it. Right now I don't even know when I can start again. I'll definitely put up any work that I do get done though.

01-11-2008, 02:47
Well it's been a while since I last updated this. I have been moving around and unable to work on anything. I finally got unpacked and worked through some of the more difficult portions of the Macharius' chassis though. Right now I am a little further than these pics show, I didn't have time to put them on the computer, but I will update soon. I'm working on putting the rivets on the chassis and then will start on the turret. I have the base built but no detail in it yet. I want to put battle cannon barrels on it interchangeable to vanquishers, but we'll see. I'm also planning on the vulcan mega bolter, but that will have to be a completely seperate turret.

01-11-2008, 09:47
Awesome work.

Can you pm me the link to the Malcador template?

10-11-2008, 18:45
Ooh, that's some lovely clean work - and very dedicated riveting, too! I look forward to seeing more of this. :)

24-11-2008, 21:58
Well, I've finished the construction of the Macharius, I'm just waiting for more inspiration to paint it up. I will load pictures as soon as I can, right now my computer is being rather difficult, and won't let me. I'm really happy with how it's turned out though.

24-11-2008, 22:30
Nice tank, not being in a hurry to finish is the secret to making great scratch builds.
Hope you finish it, would love to see something like this as a battlefield wreck!

Bugbait out

25-11-2008, 17:03
Well my comp/internet are cooperating today so here are some pics of the finished Macharius. I also took some comparison shots and am working on a scratch baneblade.

25-11-2008, 22:36
Splendid work, old man! :)

26-11-2008, 00:12
everything looks GREAT! cant wait to see it painted!

the BB is looking good too!

keep up the great work!

26-11-2008, 09:02
Fantastic work. to me it looks like the orig FW mock up must have.

03-12-2008, 12:23
hey can't_decide, could you PM me with the instructions/templates that you used to build this beast? i am in the same spot that you were in when you started this project, want to get a hold of one of these things, but dont want to fork over the cash to FW.

it would be much appreciated.

also, everything is looking amazing. keep up the great work

03-12-2008, 17:09
Sorry I didn't use any templates, but now that I have made it I will make some. I can PM you what I did use as reference when I find it, we just switched comps.

04-12-2008, 02:03
sweet. thanks a lot! that would be really helpful.

let me know when you figure out those templates

05-12-2008, 17:03
Wow, beautiful work. Nice to see it all put together.

13-12-2008, 02:25
Well, I want to get some work done on the BB, but I just can't get a good mold for the treads. I'm trying really hard not to use premade stuff on it, even though there is some iconography in my master tread. The last few days I have been working on a scratch destroyer tank. It's just about done, and pics will be posted soon. I didn't do any WIP because it was going fast. I'm pretty happy with it. I think I'm going to scratch the heavy support for an armoured company. We'll see though.

13-12-2008, 05:58
Insane, I am buying one of those. I lack your awesome skills of conversion to make my own.:D

18-12-2008, 19:16
Still having a bit of trouble getting pictures onto this. I did finish the destroyer though. Haven't been very successful in making the tread for my BB, so in the meantime I think I will work on a Valkyrie for my Kasrkin. I want to do a few of them, so I'll probably end up making molds for some of the stuff.

19-12-2008, 12:31
Some nice stuff. Seriously high quality scratch builds I must say.

22-12-2008, 03:36
Well one more attempt here to upload some pics of the destroyer. This is getting really annoying. Other than that, I have the fuselage almost done for my valkyrie. I figured I would skip the interior on this one, since I want to do at least one more, but I'm happy with how it's coming along anyway.
Ha it finally worked! So here are the pics of my destroyer.

22-12-2008, 05:27
Very nice work on that Destroyer, old boy!

22-12-2008, 08:30
This is amazing. On both tanks, I really like the detail you brought to the side armour, these look like the real thing!
The more scratchbuild IG tanks I see, the more I regret that in my "noobness" I used all the tracks of the tanks, even the ones you can't see because of the armour...
Keep up the good work!

22-12-2008, 12:24
really nice scratch builds. well done!

22-12-2008, 13:25
Thanks for your comments! It's the inspiration here that drives me.

22-12-2008, 23:35
Here is a quick pic of my valkyrie's progress. I haven't decided on how to do the wings yet, hollow or solid, and then there's the whole cockpit area...49661

23-12-2008, 00:24
Looks interesting, old boy!

23-12-2008, 00:56
nice thank

23-12-2008, 01:44
I love the stuff man, keep up the good work.

23-12-2008, 09:54
That valkerie is looking like it will shape up nice atm.

Also lack of did you ever finish your reaver titan? You never did post on your log again.

31-12-2008, 03:58
Well, I have horrible project ADD right now. I can't seem to stay on one very long. Today I've put together the main chassis for a marauder destroyer. The valkyrie is not moving along very quickly, and I still haven't figured out how to do the tread on my BB. I will post pics of the marauder when I get a chance to take them. For the time being, I think I will just work on whichever seems like it needs more attention at the time.

31-12-2008, 04:25
I know the feeling. I finished my marauder several months ago and I just started painting it.
Plus a closet full of unfinished models.

31-12-2008, 04:53
If it helps with the tracks for the BB, I was just looking at this chap's marvellous Orky steam engine - http://www.the-waaagh.com/forums/?showtopic=17582&st=140 - and if you scan down to post #154, there's an idea for articulated tracks I think I'll use with my supers.

31-12-2008, 16:20
Thanks MrP I'll look into that.

Tommy, your marauder is the whole reason I'm doing one now. I want another flyer for my thunderbolt to escort and 6 bombs seems plenty.

02-01-2009, 04:57
Well, some work done on the Marauder. I've got the fuselage mostly finished and now the tail is almost completed. I still need to figure out what I'll do for rivets on there. I've also finished up the main wing bases, but I have to add the detailing. I plan on doing some hardpoints with metal inserts so I can put hellfires on with magnets.

02-01-2009, 11:38
looking good so far. For rivets try using small blobs of pva glue applied with thin wire or a cocktail stick. Or buy a leather punch and punch out small circles of plasticard.

03-01-2009, 03:44
Well, most of the stuff on the main wings is done now. I have to put a few more plates on the bottom, but they'll be large, a lot less detail underneath them. After that I have to make the hardpoints, and engines. Those shouldn't take too long. I'm actually thinking of using cake columns for the engine bodies.
That'll add some texture to the engines and make it a bit easier. After all that I have to work on the cockpit, and turret, then all the weapons. I'm holding out on the weapons because I like doing those, and not doing them 'til everything else is done will keep me more motivated. Here are the newest pics of the wings. They are not attached yet.

03-01-2009, 04:41
Once again, great scratch building.

03-01-2009, 08:14
Great job.... Openly nothing criticize....
Only small remark, I think trackguard of the destryer are a too big....

03-01-2009, 19:48
looking good, like the intakes on the wings

03-01-2009, 20:01
Little, I know they look a little big, but I did them the way I did to make it look more like a field expedient set of guards the crew had whipped up on their own. They look a lot better in real life, and as soon as I get more paint to base them with I think they will stand up a lot better. I've been way too into building and not painting recently.
Thanks everyone for the C&C though. I do appreciate it.

08-01-2009, 01:39
Well, got the main wings finished, next up is going to be the engines. I used some new clay I got called "Paper Clay." I'm really liking it because it's based on of all things paper. It dries within an hour, and is incredibly light, but well textured. Perfect for filling in gaps and not weighing the model down. I'm happy with that right now because there are some gaps where I attached the wings, and didn't want that to be an issue.

08-01-2009, 02:16
Looks like you got the scale right. I made mine too small.
The FW one has an 18 inch wing span and mine has 13 inches.
It fits well and is cleaner than mine too. I go for speed too much.
I have used the paper clay for sandbags on tanks, but not for modeling.
Does it shrink and cause gaps?

08-01-2009, 03:06
Thanks, but I'm still jealous of yours. Mine is still a little smaller than the FW one, coming in at about sixteen, maybe sixteen and a half. The paper clay is wonderful! It doesn't shrink, and is still a little flexible, so if I have to adjust or get a little more in there aren't any cracks or anything. I don't know about modelling with it, or making anything textured yet, haven't tried, but for gap filling and flat smooth stuff it's great. The only thing I worry about is maybe having to seal it to paint, but I haven't gotten there yet. Also I did put some leftover on a track piece I made just to see how well it holds detail but it's not quite dry yet. I'll let you know what happens when I pull it off.

22-01-2009, 16:11
Well, stuck in another rut and not getting much work done. I do have some ideas for some different stuff, mostly it's gonna be way future projects. One that I think I might tackle this weekend, it's small, no really small, is to make a mini tankette probably a little like the cyclops to act as a portable mortar platform. I'm really stingy with how I use my IG guys, but want to try mortars. I'm planning on a guy going along with it, but just one not two. It will have a mortar tube like the elysian's with the rotating magazine and a telescoping pole with targeting gear on it. I haven't had a chance to draw up plans yet, but I think that will only take a few minutes and then making it will only take an hour maybe. If it works out I might just mold it, and make some more up. Let me know what you think, I'll probably have pics up this evening/tomorrow.

22-01-2009, 21:44

24-01-2009, 02:33
Already put this in the tread head thread, but here are some pics of my mini mortar.
C&C welcome.

24-01-2009, 20:14
Not bad It really is a mini mortar lol

24-01-2009, 21:58
Looks nice. Evergreen makes these strips called "channels" that would look good cut up as treads.

24-01-2009, 22:32
I hadn't thought of that tommy. I'll have to pick some up.

25-01-2009, 18:26
Does evergreen sell plastic tubes aswell? Because the only supplier I've found so far ha a minimum postage fee of 19 euros which is a bit ridiculous when I was buying a couple of euros worth of plastic tubing.

25-01-2009, 21:18
Yeah evergreen does plastic tubes. They have round, square, I beams, angles and as Tommy said channels.

26-01-2009, 16:41
I shall have to go take a gander then thnx

09-02-2009, 23:33
Well, I finally got the channel to make treads for my "Mini Griffon". It worked out pretty well so I went ahead and painted it up. I still need to add some decals. But I'm pretty happy with how it woked out.

10-02-2009, 08:06
Thats looking pretty darned good! Nice job on the tracks :D and a spiffing paint job to boot :P

28-02-2009, 03:47
This guy came out really well.
I like the lens a lot. It reminds me a little of that Wall-E character.

01-03-2009, 10:53
I concur with the above, old boy. He's come out lovely!

01-03-2009, 14:21
Thanks, I'm thinking of doing another two for now, but I might have to adjust the total number in the future. I really like how it's come out, and have the template if anyone wants it. The hardest part was having the patience to put the tread on there.
Right now I'm just trying to catch up on projects lying around, so progress overall is kinda slow.

01-03-2009, 14:50
great work on the malcador!

if i could ask you a few questions - how do you cut out the circles so well? do you use a compass knife?

also, how do you modell the ridge thing around the outer edge of the side skirt? not quite sure if i explained that right... ok here's an attachment of a pic to explain the part im on about

id really be grateful if you could answer.

01-03-2009, 15:58
Synapse - For the circles it's all hole punches. I have a leather punch that has 1/4" to 1/16" holes, a total of six sizes. Then I also use a regular hole punch for putting stuff in binders, it's just a single hole punch. I punch circles from 1 mm and 3 mm plasticard for different things and then stack different sizes where needed. The small rivets are 1mm rod cut into small wafers.
If you're talking about the rounds at the corners of the sides there, I still haven't gotten a compass knife. I keep meaning to, but that was just done with a lot of patience, really, really slowly and lightly until it came apart. I actually had one screw up on my second one and had to redo the entire side. Good thing it's a big section and I could still salvage the rest as scrap for smaller pieces.
For the ridge on the Macharius I just cut a 2mm strip from 1mm plasticard and glued down the thin edge along a line I had drawn. It's set about 1 to 2mm in from the edge. I can't remember and I'm in the process of packing stuff to prepare for a move in a little while, so I can't measure it, but you can adjust for whatever width of edge you want.

01-03-2009, 16:25
that leather hole punch sounds very helpful.

08-05-2009, 03:42
Haven't been able to update in a while since I haven't gotten any real work done on things. I have started a new project, like I need another one right now... I'm building a Lucius Pattern Reaver. It's slow going, so I'll post some stuff when I can. Other than that I have almost finished my Marauder. The only left to build is the canopy, and the hardpoints under the wings for missiles. Those should get done in the next day or two. Trying right now to get some pics uploaded, but I'm having problems... A couple are working so far, so you get to see some progress.
I'm also going to borrow an airbrush so I can practice before I paint up the Marauder and my Macharius. Yeah, it's still waiting for something more than a base coat. Oh well, life grinds on...

10-05-2009, 18:28
That is looking seriously nice!

11-05-2009, 09:20
Nicely detailed, where did you get the resin parts from or did you cast them yourself?

11-05-2009, 18:11
The resin parts I cast myself. Just made the original, and then a mold with some putty latex I have. Most of them turned out pretty well, and now I have the molds for anything else in the future. I'm actually going to make a hydra, and it's going to use the same ammo drums from the front of the marauder. They're a little bit larger than the FW ones, but I think they should be bigger anyway.

26-07-2009, 23:07
Haven't done much of my own stuff in a while. I've been working on things other than 40k. I have gotten some painting done, and should be able to crank out a lot more guys since deciding on the final scheme for my army. The only problem is ADD is definitely an issue as I have had way too many ideas and gotten way too much inspiration from others. Right now I'm wanting to work on a Leviathan. I have started some designs in Sketchup, but I'm at a loss as to whether or not I'll be able to export them into a 2d template or if I'll have to take my measurements and redraw the whole thing. If anyone has any ideas or experience in exporting .skp files to a 2d template like format, I'd love to hear about it.
Without further ado here are a couple of shots of the design for the Leviathan. Most details will be absent, as I want to build those and not necessarily draw them out.

02-08-2009, 01:22
So I got some more work done on the design for my Leviathan. I decided I wanted to plan out all the major components before building, and so I also did some interior work. Hopefully this next week I'll have the templates done up so some work can commence. The only issue I'm having right now is again the issue I've had for so long. I start a project, get some work done, and then start another. I have the paint scheme figured out for all of my infantry, so they aren't from all over the place. A few tanks done, a few base coated, and a few just there. Way too many scratch builds that are half done too. Pretty soon I should be getting an airbrush, so that will knock a lot of the tanks and scratch builds out a little easier for major stuff.
Anyway, on to what you want to see, some pics of the work thus far. I've already fixed a few things since generating these pics, and noticed a few others, if anyone spots something weird please let me know what and why. I know the tread doesn't exactly line up, and that will be taken care of when I actually build it. I will also be extending the track guards a little bit.

The other thing I'm considering is putting in mounts for some twin-linked heavy bolter turrets. BoLS has a great data sheet for the Leviathan, and that is what I've based things off of so far, but I'm tempted, as least for the template to add in the HB turrets so they can be done. For scale I don't have anything else on the computer to compare with, but it's about 18.75 inches long (not counting the Doomsday Cannon), and 13.87 inches tall. I know that it could be larger, but based on the transport capacity from the BoLS datasheet, and my measurements of bases, I figured there are good dimensions, especially when you consider it has two additional levels, and the command/cannon areas as well. Again let me know of any criticism you have of her.

02-08-2009, 04:18
Fixed it! Pics are viewable now.

04-08-2009, 14:49
Ok looking good overall but there are a fex niggling points.
First off where's the engine? I would add another layer to the floor and block it off to add some more depth, maybe make a step half way back to raise it a bit more again.
Although the drive pulleys are a good idea and indicated a method of drive you would never use pulleys in something this large as they are far too unreliable and prone to breaking. I would say replace them with gears.

05-08-2009, 01:41
Yayale thanks for the comments. I had pondered something with the engine, but wasn't sure. I like the idea of a raised portion further in. I'll see how that comes out. As far as the pulleys, they're not actually for the drive. They are to raise and lower the rear hatch. You can't really see that from the pictures as I didn't put the cables in. I've been thinking of changing them to hydraulics, but haven't gotten around to trying it yet. I like how they turned out, but I'm not sure about how well they work with the rest, hopefully this week I'll have some time to work on those changes. Then I'll post them up here.

05-08-2009, 02:08
The engines could be built into the track assembles the way they are in rhinos.
You could have large sliding double doors on the interior next to the pulleys.
These doors could be open to show some of the engines on both sides.

05-08-2009, 02:33
That's a good idea Tommy. I'll try that one as well.

06-08-2009, 18:01
I always wondered where a rhinos engines were, and there was me thinking they worked on pixie dust :P

I reckon hydralics of some form for the ramp would look good. Maybe have the door open in two halves, one half goes up the other down.

06-08-2009, 18:04
woops double post

11-08-2009, 00:03
I did a little work on the hatch mechanism and added doors to access the engine compartments inside the track assemblies. Here is a shot of it. I think as far as the templates go this one is done. I'll leave the rest of the beast up to making things as they come. I'll also post the templates once I finish converting them with Pepakura so others can access them. Like I said it isn't huge, but I think it conveys the size well, and isn't too OTT.

Here is a pic with a Baneblade for size comparison (note: I did not make the baneblade, I downloaded it through Google Sketchup. I adjusted the scale to be approximately the same size).

11-08-2009, 17:27
Whats actually opening and closing the hatch as they just look like support arms atm.

11-08-2009, 18:00
Great looking stuff :). Nice amount of details on every model. The idea with mini mortar is simply brilliant. Cheers

@Morthai, Thanks, I have a few things I need to finish up so I can post them up here. Just haven't had the drive, time or any number of other things right now. A couple should be getting done pretty soon though.
@Yayale, on the template they look support arms, but the line that is connecting them will actually be a piston. I haven't gotten around to drawing that in, and don't know that I will. I started cutting some pieces last night to get some work done on the actual model, and once I get more plasticard in, I think I'll get everything roughed out before I decide on putting pistons and stuff in. I like how the arms came out, I just need to work on how I'm going to make the pistons attach to them. In fact, I'll probably do that tonight, and take some pics, since the arm should actually be pretty easy... Yeah I'll do that and get the pics up.

11-08-2009, 21:08
Ah rite yeh tht sounds like it will work well :D

12-08-2009, 01:21
Well, I did some work on the swing arms for the rear ramp so you can see what my plans are with the pistons. Problem is now I think the arms are too small to be with the pistons. I'll try again maybe tonight, since I know how it works now after building this one. I like how it works, again I think it's just the size issue now.

13-08-2009, 17:18
Yeh it does look a tad flimsy but otherwise really good. I reckon once beefed up you will be on to a winner :D

13-09-2009, 03:23
Well, with other things pressing on my time I haven't had a ton of time to work on my projects, but today I did get some time to paint. As I am changing the overall scheme of my army from the green it was to the red I am liking now, I had to redo all of my infantry. I'm working through them one type at a time and got my vox casters, and squad leaders done. I also have my kasrkin sergeant done, and two officers. It took a while to get my Techpriest done as well, but I'll be working on my special weapons troops next. I'll keep posting updates as I get things done. I have to pick up some more card and some different tubes before I can get more work done on the Leviathan. I realized I don't even have enough right now for even one track assembly. Oh well, it'll be a long term project I imagine.
Here are some pics of how the infantry are turning out.

The guy on the left of the Techpriest is my own Master of Ordinance.

20-09-2009, 23:36
Got around to doing some work on the Leviathan. I have most of the body built. I just need to build the command deck, and turrets, then it'll be on to detailing it. I am going to hold off on actually building the interior for now. But I'll get it done eventually, and add it in then.

22-09-2009, 12:56
It's a nice shape, glad there's some progress on this project again :D

22-09-2009, 22:08
I'll be getting some work done on command deck later tonight I think, then I will move on to the turrets. I do plan on doing the command deck with some detail, and maybe be able to remove the roof. We'll see. I'll post up some pics when I get some work done.

Looks amazing! It seems like it would be easier to detail the interior before completing the exterior, though.

23-11-2009, 00:24
Thanks! I'm planning on doing the interior as a complete piece that will then slide in through the back. I think I want a few access for getting to the side turrets and such, some of which will end up having open doors, since these will be between the exterior and the interior compartment they'll also help align the interior compartment when I slide it in. The front cannon is also going to be done more as a large mortar or howitzer with actual exposure to the compartment the breech is in. I haven't done any drawings for it, and don't know that I will. I'm thinking that compartment will be connected with the main interior by means of a ramp corridor that will remain open as well. Unfortunately I'm out of town on business for a few weeks and can't get any work done on this and anything else I left at home. I did pick up an AOB box and have most of the orks painted up. I'll post pics when I get them all finished, except the warboss. I plan to wait until I get home to paint him. The space marines will be used as support to my IG, as in I don't want a whole army, just a few units to supplement my IG and use in Apoc games. Anyway, this is getting long without having much to show for it. Updates to come...eventually.

23-11-2009, 19:42
Well, I got some pics of the orks I've finished, and those that aren't. Still have to finish up the nobz and the boss. Taking the pics I realized a few things I could have done better with cleaning things ups before painting, but I didn't have a knife with me to do that, so...that's life.

I like the colors on the fliers.
Are you going to base the flying stands?

24-11-2009, 11:50
Thanks Tommy.
I do plan on basing them, just haven't gotten around to it yet. I'll probably hold off on it too, until I get back home and have more access to bits so I can put a few on there. One of the deffkoptas still needs the rockets painted up as well. This is a Deathskulls army, but I'm trying to go for a lot of their equipment being looted from others, so there will be other paint jobs covered up in a blue paint job. I'm also planning a skullhamma for them eventually based off a MK I series tank. So much to do, so little time...

06-12-2009, 15:55
Well, not a ton has been going on for the last bit. I've finished most of the orks, except for a couple of nobz and the boss. The boss I plan to hold out on until I get home and can lavish more time on him. Picked up some gretchin for kicks and have finished them but still need to paint the runtherd. I'll get some more pics up when I take them.
I have been working on some other things that I want to model later as well. I already did one Macharius, but I'm working on getting some templates so I can make another one easier than I did before. I'll be using Tommyguns tread method on the new one, more time, less money...I'm cheap. The other thing is going to be a scratch built Battlewagon for the orks based on the Gorgon. I was thinking of doing one based on the old Mk I series from WWI, but the design I made ended up being bigger than I thought, so it's going to end up as a skullhamma.
Right now I'm having problems exporting 3d models from Google Sketchup so I only have the 3d models made so far. I hope to get the issue fixed so I can fix up some templates to work on when I get home next week. I do have a couple of shots of the models so far though. Like any other model I've done templates for, most of the detailing is missing, because it has to be done in real life and doing rivets for something I'm not have manufactured would be a pain.
Here are the pics so far. I'll update the orks later and if I get the template issue resolved too.

Are you familiar with this: http://waybe.weebly.com/index.html ?

It's a program that makes 2D templates out of Sketchup models... the trial version is free for 15 days, and the licensed version is $50-200, depending on which version you get.

06-12-2009, 19:07
I'll have to look into that. Pepakura has done well for me so far, but with not being able to export it to the right file type right now a temporary alternative could be in the cards.

07-12-2009, 03:06
Oh great!
This means I have to get off my butt now and stop playing Warhammer online and back to finishing my tank.
I'm almost to level 16!

07-02-2010, 20:23
Well, haven't been posting much here since I haven't had a lot of time to work on things, but I'm putting in some effort before the craziness of summer.

I got to work on my Gorgon, although I think this first one will end up being looted by my Orks to become a battlewagon. I like the look of it, but there are some goofs that will best be fixed by my meks, and not a techpriest. As soon as I finish this one, before looting it, I'll make an addition to the yahoo group. After I finish it up, I don't know if I'll work out the Macharius templates, or have another go at the Gorgon to add to my IG. Oh well, so many dreams so little time.

Here are some WIP pics of the Gorgon though.

08-02-2010, 07:17
Is your Yahoo group with bwc-archive?

08-02-2010, 21:32
Yup, I hope to get the templates in there by Wednesday.

15-02-2010, 15:18
Well, it's a few days late, but I got the Gorgon templates uploaded to BWC Archives. They aren't perfect, and I plan to do some more work on them to make them a bit more user friendly. I also posted some different pics of the model, from Sketchup as means of some sort of instruction. They will work, I have mine mostly done, but there is no detailing. That will come with a future modification of the templates.

15-02-2010, 22:45
I can't find them. Which sub files are they in?
Just to be sure, are they at BWC Archives or BWC2 Archives?

15-02-2010, 23:16
BWC Archives > Files > 1 WH40K VEHICLES > Imperial Guard > Gorgon Transport. There is 1 PDF and 3 images. I'll update it as I get more work done to improve the templates.

17-02-2010, 00:00
I see.
I was confused by the sub title "MK VII used as Gorgon".

06-03-2010, 21:12
Well, my inability to complete projects has kicked in yet again. The Gorgon will be used for my Orks, but has been put on the backburner by a desire to make a Knight. I opted for the Warden, kinda like fire support. I got some templates done up and posted to BWC Archives, and then while building it, realized I didn't like that I had made the carapace curved, but the other armor squared, so I went and modified the carapace, albeit too late for the current build, but I plan one or two more anyway. Here are some CAD pics of the older version.

06-03-2010, 22:44
I have one of those epic Wardens.
I painted mine to look like an angry lady bug.
There is something about their oddness that I really like.
If you post the templates, I may have to make one.
How tall will it be?

07-03-2010, 03:59
I posted the templates up on BWC. If you print them off without scaling, it'll be about 8 inches tall. Having never dealt with epic I figured it would be a decent size for it, being like a mini-titan and all. If it's off, and you want it adjusted I can correct it pretty easily.

07-03-2010, 12:28
8 inches sounds like a good size for a one man mini titan. The Warhound is about 13 inches and it has a three man crew.
It will be a long while before I get to it. I have several projects to do first, but this will be a "must do project".

07-03-2010, 16:50
Well, got some work done on the Warden. It seems lately I get to about this stage with everything and then want to move on to another project. Oh well, a missile launcher and bolters to go and it will at least be done, sans detailing.
Techpriest Enginseer and BR Dread for scale.

Impressive! Thanks for the scale shots.

15-03-2010, 07:37
Could you post up the plans for some of these titans, this warden looks really good.

15-03-2010, 11:20

Look on BWC archive yahoo group.. the templates been posted there (use google search)...

You will have to subscribe to the group.. but you will find it useful.. they have lots of other interesting titan template too..

Best wishes,

15-03-2010, 11:32
Thanks for that.

03-04-2010, 21:23
Well, with a new little one running the house I haven't been allowed to get knives out for a bit, so instead, I've been working on new model designs. I started a Paladin to go along with the Warden. I have finished the model design, but need to make the templates out of it. Shouldn't take too long, and then I'll post them on BWC. Here are some pics of the new Paladin:

04-04-2010, 18:34
The warden with the curved carapace really does look like a lady bug lol. I'm not to keen on how top heavy the two titans look. I would personally bulk the thighs up a bit, but if you want to stay true to the epic models they still look very good.

I'm looking forwards to seeing you orkify the gorgon. i might have to make one of those.

05-04-2010, 02:22
I'm actually planning to work out some armor for the thighs, on the Paladin. The Warden actually looks better prportioned. Keep in mind also the templates I'm doing don't have hydraulics either. Those should help make it look a little bulkier too.

I'm waiting still on the gORKon. I'm excited to get it fleshed out more as it's going to be a counts as Battlewagon for my Orks. Hopefully Ican get some of it done before my hiatus.

05-04-2010, 07:07
The knights are looking good....particularly liking the warden.... very true to the original models....but I agree with bulking up the upper legs.

06-04-2010, 16:24
Are the templates for the gorgon from the yahoo group? bwc archive or something like that.

06-04-2010, 20:57
Yeah, they're up there. I need to change the label for it, it says it's a Mk VII for use as a Gorgon, I have to change the description.

07-04-2010, 11:53
Do the templates fit on A4 paper? Saying that i can get access to an A1 printer at university lol

07-04-2010, 18:05
They are made to fit on letter sized paper (8.5 x 11 inches or 216 x 279 mm). If you print without scaling it will cut off the margins a little, but still leave you plenty of room around the pieces.

11-04-2010, 20:35
Cant Decide..
I love the design for the new Paladin Knights.. looking forward to seeing the completed design, and the templates on BWC..

Continue the great work,

Best wishes,
