View Full Version : Venerable Archmage's Slaanesh, IG, and whatever else I end up painting

Okay, I got back into the hobby a couple of years ago and have got into the modelling side of things a lot more deeply than when I started as an impatient teenager who just wanted armies on the tabletop ASAP. I feel a bit silly posting my models on here, since just about every project log I look at seems to display far superior skill to mine. However, I'm trying to improve and learn new skills, and so I want to receive any tips and critiques you can throw at me.

My current projects include:
Imperial Guard - My own regiment, the 1st Belsegorian, which currently stands at 1000pts, and which I'd like to increase to about 2000pts, and maybe Apocalypse size, eventually. Pictures of those will follow once I have access to something better than my webcam.
Terrain - Some forest terrain and a couple of bunkers / emplacements. Pictures of these will follow once I have accomplished something worth photographing!
Slaanesh - These are Slaaneshi cultists, for which I intend to use the Imperial Armour 5 cultist rules (similar to the IG list). I only have three models fully painted, one partly painted, and one concept paint which I may or may not complete. I've already got pictures of these, although they're from my webcam, and so of questionable quality.

So, on with my cultists.

My idea for the Slaaneshi cultists began when I had an image of dynamic, robed cultists, dual wielding swords. It took a long time to figure out how I would achieve this image, and in the mean time, I did something silly, and originally unrelated, with a Mordian model I had lying around from some long forgotten project:

I know, I know... he looks ridiculous... However, I figured I could use the white faces with red painted lips in a Slaaneshi cult army, to make them look a bit dandyish, with perhaps a nod to geishas also.

The next step was to play around with plastics a bit. I have a lot of bitz lying around from my IG army, including the arms from the Empire pistoliers I used as part of my rough rider conversion. Not liking to waste cool bitz, I realised that these might be just what I was looking for, if they were dual-wielding pistols instead. I just had to find bodies for them. I had a look at the new(ish) flagellants, and ended up with my first two cultists:

I deemed these reasonably successful, so I bought myself a Slaaneshi lord on a steed of Slaanesh (or boobyworm, if you prefer) and combined with with some Empire bits I had to hand:

I've got another four of the basic cultists waiting to be painted, and I'm trying to come up with ideas for other squads, such as converted Ogryns, renegrade preachers and other such silliness, including (possibly) enforcers based on my Mordian guy.

I am impressed with your inginuity regarding the Slaanesh theme. Despite not being purple all over the place, you can tell that they are Slaanesh biased because of the pompous clothing and facepaint. And the boobworm aswell! :) I can't wait to see more.

Best. Army. Ever.

It's like the Mighty Boosh are coming to kill us all in the name of Slaanesh!

And it's fracking awesome, well done. I really like how you've captured the outlandish nature of Slaanesh in a very original way.

So, I've painted up a few more basic cultists, and here's a group shot.

Also, I've put together an apostate preacher using an Empire wizard head and arms from the High Elf archer sprue:

I'm not sure if the mask needs a bit of colour to it somewhere.

Now, over to my Imperial Guard. Here's Commisar Ishmael Monk:

And here's his adjudant:

Here are my rough riders. I intend to bulk this squad up to ten, and then add two more squads. This lot are the easiest to model, since they're simply dragoons with rifles. I'd also like a squad of lancers and a squad with swords and laspistols.

My next purchase will be some more pistoleers, which will give me parts for both more cultists and more rough riders.

Okay, here's my flamer conversion for my first squad. He's a flagellant head and body, and the gun is from the Empire handgunners. The promethium canisters on his back are of course from the IG Cadian sprue. The ignition thingy (I don't know what you'd call it) is made from a bit of hairpin.... I'm not quite sure the conversion makes a convincing flamer, so I'm very much open to ideas as to how else to do flamers for subsequent squads.

Also, every Slaaneshi army needs at least one fallen Eldar, I've always thought, so here's mine:

Right, it's been a while - I've not been painting half so much since I moved house and lost my dedicated painting station, alas :(

Anyway, here's a few pics of my rough rider lieutenant:

I've been using the new washes on him, particularly sepia wash on the metal, and I think it's worked out rather nicely.

Obviously he's not 100% complete - I still have the base to do, and he's not glued in his saddle - I have to buy a new tube of superglue tomorrow. I'm also, maybe, going to try some freehand writing on the scrolls, although I have yet to decide quite what.

De-Empiring the horse was quite a challenge, and so I got myself some better files. I wish I'd waited until I'd gotten some miliput, as I think it would have been better for this model that greenstuff.

That said, I'm quite pleased with how he's come out, so maybe it'll motivate me to pick up speed again. I have the parts for four more rough riders, either dragoons or lancers, to hand, so maybe that should be the next task, although I do also have a chimera for my cultists.

I must resist the urge to pursue my "wild hunt" idea for a Khorne daemon army - a scary bare chested herald riding Archaeon's steed, surrounded by a pack of flesh hounds.

I think I might, however, try a quick Tau diorama, as soon as I have the bitz, however...

Ah I remember those cultists from my lurking days. Great work on the face paint, very evil clownish. I may have to snag that idea for my slaanesh LaTD.

Nice use of parts for the rough rider Lt. How many rough riders do you plan to make in total?

Do it! Chaos commands you.

Thanks :] I intend to have thirty rough riders when I'm done - they're a major theme for my army. I've so far got six dragoons (I should post a picture of my sergeant sometime, actually) and this chappie for my lancers.

I really shouldn't start a third army though! It's one thing to have two on the go at once, as there's some crossover with the kits (I use a bit of Empire for both, particularly the pistoleer sprues), but a daemon army I can't really justify. I will probably do it in a little while, though.

those are some of the creepiest rabble i have ever seen. Congratulation on the fine work! keep it up!

Right. Being without a permanent painting station set up had seriously reduced my desire to paint most days, so I've actually not finished much recently. I have most of the next cultist squad miliputted, and I've done one test paint. This squad's colour is blue:

And here he is next to one of my other squad, for comparison:

And because I'm lazy and ill disciplined, I have done a mounted commisar rather than getting on with my rough rider dragoons and lancers:

The legs are from the plastic High Elf wizard sprue.

For the Emperor, and suchlike!

I actually really like that first Mordian you did earlier this year. He sort of reminds me of Marilyn Manson. I think you should explore that goth look a bit more because it really seems to fit well with the idea of Slaaneshi cultists.

Love the other stuff too. It's a good mix of warhammer fantasy bitz. Actually reminds me of Frank Herbet's Dune books a bit, which is awesome. Hope you come back to revisit this project in the future.

FANTASTIC. The combination of the flagellant torso and pistolier arms is just incredible. Makes me want to build some slaaneshi cultists of my own :D

That facepaint is brilliant! They remind me of the Joker, which - needless to say - is awesome. If there was any way I thought it would fit my own Guard, I'd nick the idea instantly, but alas.. still, I want to see more killer clowns, paint some already!
