View Full Version : TOLotRPs Month 2 (Junes Finished Models and WIP Thread)

Death Korp
01-07-2008, 05:47

Hello, and welcome to the 2nd month of the Tale of LotR Painters! This is where the people who joined up to this post their WIPs for July and June Finished Models.
Also, if you haven’t noticed in the Army List thread, mr Feral is the 2nd in command here, so if I haven’t started the thread, then Mr Feral will have done because I would have not been able to do it for that month.

Your WIP models are NOT put into one post like the other TOPs, as I don’t want to be restrictive, and I want to have as many posts of piccies in these threads each month as possible.
At the beginning of next month, you will have ONE post showing 3 pictures of models you have done, and 1 picture with the army so far (in the same format as the TOPs threads), but the posts of WIPs after that are unrestrictive like this month. This is to make sure that I can see who has done their models for that month.

Hope you understand that!

Here are all the people who have joined and what army/ies they are doing:

Corai: Osgiliath Vets.
Daredhnu: Gondor
Hermanesq: Arnor
Kettilman: Gondor
Kroot Lord: Dol Amroth
The Emperor sucks: Gondor

Intrepid Adventurer: High Elves
Crisis_Core: Rangers and Tower of Ectilieon

Ben: Dwarves

skuller: Numenorians and Black Numenorians

Death Korp: Easterlings
arobe: Serpent Horde
C-Coen: Cirith Ungol
cerealkiller195: Harad

75Hastings69: Moria
petesamd: Mordor (new guy, misses joker (i'm too nice )
Mr. Feral: Umbar

And for all you people who don’t know…

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to complete a 500 point LOTR army in the next six months.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 100 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 6 months. Starting with the first day of June 2008.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc., they get one 'Joker'. For one month within the six months you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post saying, "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 5 Months they have to come up with (approx) 100 points of painted and based figures. 100 points for 5 out of the next 6 months.

In six months time we will all end up with a finished 500 point army.

All chat, questions, discussion, WIP, painting advice, encouragement, tutorials, etc, etc, should be on this thread.

A new thread will be opened on the first day of each month (and will remain open for a week) for each painter to post one, and only one post with the next 100 point ‘update’ for the army they are painting and a picture of the army to date.
(OR one post for EACH army for those nutters painting more than one army!)

I will just take this opportunity to thank all the painters who have signed up for their interest and enthusiasm and for their ideas that have helped shape this project. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope this project is a big success for everyone involved. I also hope all you Warseers enjoy these results of all the work of the painters involved.

Cheers and have fun!

Right, might aswell start it off:

Only need one picture as this is all i have done!

*Getting the blasted things finished after 1 1/2 years having them!

*Not finishing another 30pts :(

So that means i have 130pts to paint for this mnth, huzzah! :D

Now then, wheres your pics? :D

Hi all,

Here's my lot from last month - 12 Morannon Orcs. Just less than 100 points, but I've got the Shadow Lord coming up this month at 130 points.

Mr Feral
01-07-2008, 11:26
Ahoy hoy.

This is what I have completed to show you so far:

Dalamyr, Fleetmaster of Umbar - 100 points (I think?)

Well the model itself is exquisite, and a joy to paint for anyone who likes deep shading on cloth areas like me.

His face took three attempts. That was rather annoying, and I have far more to paint this month to stay on target.

01-07-2008, 16:24
Haha, so this was my initial fall-back plan if I got to caught up in other works to get my orcs done.

Shade : Drach'erven - 100 points

The model was very easy to paint and was nice to get some easy blending in for a change, since Ive been doing some intense work with my Chicago entries.

Not much, I think I might go back later and give him some glowing eyes. The varnish was still drying when I took the pic so that explains some of the wierd shine.

01-07-2008, 17:00
Obviously, despite a good start, a problem is a problem so:

Haldir and co need stripping because I'm not happy with them. I'll be doing 200pts this month instead and may have to resort to metallics :( Ne'er mind. Don't worry about the email Death Korps, and well done to everyone so far. I so could have been first if only my stuff was good enough :cries:

01-07-2008, 19:35
I've got a new computer, and while my digicam still sucks, I can now touch up the photos a little.

24 Dwarf warriors completed last month, taking the total with 9 Khazad guard to 331. This month it is characters, so hopefully I'll finish one or two a week. I only need to get one done in the whole month to make the target however.

Here are the pics. Not the best minis I have ever done, but I think they are a solid gaming standard, and they look far better than grey plastic.

First 4 Dwarf archers

Second four Dwarf archers

First four Dwarf axemen

01-07-2008, 19:38
More pics

2nd four Dwarf axemen

1st four dwarf warriors

2nd four dwarf warriors

Proving it is possible to do a set of 24 foot to a decent standard in a month. Lets hope I can keep it up when I get to my box of Rangers and 2nd box of warriors.

01-07-2008, 20:08
My first months efforts........

"they've got a cave troll"

I need to finish a few details and spray it with dull cote and finish the edge of the base and he is done.

I have always liked the Cave Troll minis and never bothered with LotR before so they (plural - all 6 of them) have just been lying around - nice to finally get some paint on him.

I think that choosing the stone effect base I did may have made alot of work when it comes to basing all those goblins! (it is plasticard cut, glued, and sanded to shape, then the model is drilled and pinned to it - looks nice butt is quite a bit of work).

01-07-2008, 21:07
Army: The Corsair Fleets

Units: 3 Corsairs with Boarding Pikes, 3 Corsairs with Shields, 3 Corsairs with Bows, 3 Arbalesters

Painting: I'm not mad about GW scheme, I don't know where they got the purple from but the Corsiars from the film are dressed
all in black which would look a bit plain so I kept the dark blue jackets from the GW scheme and went with black trousers and
scorched brown boots and accessories to match the Reavers I've already painted.

Basing: Inked sand with larger bits of rocks added. Static grass and small bushes.

Highs: Finishing the 9 Corsairs in the first 3 days of June.

Lows: Initial problems with the blues going grainy turned out it was the paint, replaced the paint no further problems.

Points:102 pts.

Archers and Arbalesters:

Corsairs with shields and boarding pikes:

Group shot to date:

The pictures could be better but I can't set up a proper lighting rig at the moment.

Greetings Great Suladan,
It is an honor to lay conquest the lands of Rohan and Gondor in your revered name and for the greater glory of your empire! I have chosen twelve of my most brave and able men to make this perilous journey and attempt to make contact with our allies the vassals of Sauron. Soon our reinforcements will arrive and we will be able to combat the enemy in great numbers. Enforce your will upon these people who refuse to acknowledge your divinity as the one true king.
Though we have yet to see any real combat aside from warding off any brigands and wild beasts that roam the land. Every single warrior at my command will not hesitate to lay down their lives for this campaign against the north. Till then my lord I will diligently await for further instructions.

Your faithful servant,
Taqi al-Din

Army: Harad/Serpent Horde

Units: 6 Harad Warriors with Bows, 6 Harad Warriors with Spear and Harad Chieftain with Spear

Painting: The scheme in the book looked well and dandy but I have never been one to follow paint schemes. So I decided to go with a red and bone color, after a few models I started to add black just to make the models look different.

I am very pleased on how they turned and I just have to add random details here and there but nothing noticeable at a glance.

Basing: Basing was pretty simple, tea leaves painted grave yard earth with some green flock and static grass. This is actually one of the first time I attempted to put more than simple flock on an army base. So I’m satisfied on how they came out.

Highs: Just about everything came together as planned except….

Lows: Not giving the chieftain a back banner… he probably left it in the other baggage train! Next month he will get a fancy back banner to show people he means business!

Points: 118 pts

wicked looking duo there! the eyes on gorbag look insane!

Mr Feral
03-07-2008, 19:23
A delightful feast to the eyes everyone! I'll congratulate all so far for sticking to it! It's good to see such a variety of different models painted and armies started, and it's interesting to see how everyone has taken a different approach to it as well.

Death Korp, great Kataphrackts and it's good to see you've got something panted after your busy schedules IRL :p

GabrielAngelos, I love the Shade and naming it was a nice touch. It puts the abomination under my painting desk to shame, that's for sure.

Nightsword, looking forward to the 200 points you'll be coughing up next month ;)

Ben, wow you paint fast! I'm going to have to try harder to catch up. Lovely Dwarfs BTW, you do the plastics proud.

75hastings69, great muted tones on the Cave Troll and the stone base is rather impressive indeed! I don't envy you having to do the same for all your Goblins though, as you mentioned.

dax, excellent Corsairs and a tough one to match when I get around to doing mine in time. The vibrant blue is an interesting change compared to the drab browns of the film counterparts.

cerealkiller195, a great colour scheme on your Haradrim and a good except of background too. I'm glad I'm the only one so far using the classic Haradrim colour scheme, so I can be "original" in not being original (if that makes sense at all :p)

C-Coen, dark and gritty, I like it! Looking forward to your rendition of Shelob next month. The subtle conversions are sweet, especially Gorbag's pose.

Right, I better get on with my 11 Haradrim Warriors still to be painted, and find some batteries for my camera!

04-07-2008, 13:20
Right, I've deleted my above post in favour of a new one, with way better pics!
But first comments on other people's models:
@Death Korp: tough not origional, I like the gold/red coloursheme.
@Mr Feral: amazing Dalamyr! Very realistic.
@GabrielAngelos: nice shading, pretty scary!
@Nightsword: a pity, tough I like the joker picture...
@Ben: never expected bright blue and gold would look good, especially on Dwarves.. you proved I was wrong!
@hastings: good choice of colours, love the base.
@dax: excellent painting, nice colours too.
@cerealkiller: interesting coloursheme, the light rim is a nice touch.

Here then my new piccies:

Shagrat: (finished the eyes, had to get a new small brush first!)

04-07-2008, 16:18
hey sorry I haven't been a big part of this forum yet but here my 100 point troll, hope you like him!

04-07-2008, 17:22
Here are my models from last month:

This month ill be painting The dark marshal on horse

Mr Feral
04-07-2008, 19:21
petesamd, interesting use of the red on the leather straps. It's original, that's for sure.

Leviro, gnarly Morannon Orcs you have there and the Dark Marshall sounds exciting.

Hey everyone, I got myself some more batteries so you will be able to see the first 4 Haradrim Warriors I am on the verge of completing tomorrow with pictures.

Said Haradrim Warriors still on the verge of completion :p:

Even if I get all 12 of them done this month, that only totals 68 points, so I'll probably do four more this month as well as finish the Hasharin and have a points break on next month's work.

06-07-2008, 21:53
Great Easterlings Death Korp
Sniper Kelly those Orcs turned out great.
Mr Feral thats one nice Dalamyr now I have to match it :D
GabrielAngelos nice shade very etheral feel to it, the bone type base is great to.
Somebody tie one of Ben's arms behind his back that level a work is putting us all to shame - great Dwarfs.
75Hastings69 great skin tone on that Cave troll followed the lines of the skin just right.
Ceralkiller195 I love that colour scheme gonna have to try it out at some point, you might have gone a little heavy on the washes on one or 2 or that that might be the intention.
C-Coen nice Gorbag and Shagrat your metallics are very smooth.
Petesamd the red straps are very striking alright. Quick wash on the finger and toenails would finish them of nice - a trolls gotta have his nails done before he goes to war.
Leviro as I said before the grey works really well on the Mordor Orcs even if it wasn't your orginal intention.

Congrats to all.

Well as we've drifted out to page 2 and Mr. Feral has posted some WIPs for this month (nice Harad by the way) I'll show what I've been up to so far.

This month I plan to paint
1 Bo'sun with Crossbow
The other 3 Arbalesters
3 Corsairs with bows
1 Corsair with boarding Pike
1 Corsair with shield

Total 120pts.

So far I have a grand total of 0 pts. of that done as I got side tracked this weekend doing a Black Numenorian Marshal (not even related to the Corsair project but might be of interest to someone working on Mordor) and I painted the Ballista crew (Ballista to follow soon I hope). The way things are going I'll have to cram it all into the last week. Worst case scenario I paint a Bo'sun and Captain.

To be based at the end of the month.

Mr Feral
07-07-2008, 10:33
dax, you might have to match my Dalamyr but I still have yet to match your Corsairs :p.

I've got a pair of pictures showing what I've done so far and what I'm doing now.

Completed stuff:
124 points done.

PIP stuff:
112 points in progress.

Comments and criticisms appreciated as usual.

07-07-2008, 14:02
Just wanted to pop in and say how amazing everything is looking. I am going to have to withdraw from this (sad since it was my idea) but life has reared it's ugly head and I just can't participate. But I am happy to see it going well. Hopefully I will be able to do the next one.

07-07-2008, 16:57
I have to go back to the minis and do some minor work but thanks for the compliments everyone! Truly an amazing looking blog we have going on here with all the great work and effort put into the minis.

Mr feral are you using the two harad warriors flanking your assassin as warriors armed with nothing? or are they another unit choice?

saturday i picked up a khamish skirmisher from the reaper warlord line thinking it could possibly be the right scale to use in lotr as an assassin. I was wrong but the model looks so cool that i might be tempted to pull a conversion to make it more or less the same scale. I would have to pose dramatically so that the scale doesn't look too off.

What i hope to get done this month is an assassin and a box of raiders (5? i believe),but Gen Con Indy looms next month and i have to start preparing (painting and financially) for that event. After Adepticon in Chicago i vowed that i wouldn't wait last minute to paint miniatures anymore.

@Sniper Kelly: Really nice Morranon Orcs there.
@Mr Feral: Nice Dalmyr.
@GabrielAngelos: Shade looks lovely, wish mine looked half as good.
@Nightsword: You can make up for it this month, as said in the PM :)
@Ben: Nice Dwarves.
@75hastings69 : Lovely Cave Troll.
@dax: Love the Corsairs, they look really nice.
@cerealkiller195: You're harad are really coming on.
@C-Coen: Liking Shagrat and Gorbag.
@petesamd: You have still painted something though, nice work.
@Leviro: Nice Morrannon Orcs.
@Mr Feral and dax again: Nice WIPs.

@Killshot: Sorry to hear about that mate, i wish you best of luck in whatever you are doing. And I hope i am doing a good enough job of rearing this monster you have made :)

I am proud of you all for making this much progress, so keep it going! We can beat the other ToPs in Numbers!

This month, i am painting Easterling Warriors and some other bits...

07-07-2008, 18:31
Looking at this, I really want to get a dark marshal and some black numoreans. I've got some haradrim and was thinking of bulking them out with some cavalry and far harad bits, but I'm also thinking of khand and chariots. I just need an army where you can take all of them, or 3 500 point armies. My dwarves should hit over 1000 by the end of this (very expensive characters and 72 plastic figs).

I've almost finished Balin and a dwarf captain and banner, and have two gimlis and kings, and a dain on way courtesy of ebay. Gives me all the named characters I can have, plus some extra.

I think the optimum distribution for a tale of LOTR painters is probably something like this:

1 month - characters.
1 month - elite infantry.
1 month - elite infantry/cavalry/warmachines.
3 months of basic infantry, 12 or 24 depending on how many you can get through.

And your £50 set plus a blister or box or two should get you this.

Though I am thinking of a mumak a month painting plan. Someone stop me.

Mr Feral
07-07-2008, 18:47
Killshot, it's a shame you are dropping out!

cerealkiller195, they are merely 5 point basic Haradrim Warriors. I have a third of all my Haradrim like this to keep on the nice side of the bow limit.

07-07-2008, 19:05
yo guys i had completed junes stuff a while bk im sorry 2 take forever but im gettin those pics tonight *fingers crossed* im so sorry
but this month im painting the 9 axemen (best minis in my opinion) and more rangers...joy

07-07-2008, 19:50
I imagined as much, i was thinking of doing the same with the extra warriors i have laying around. Not too sure yet though, all i have to do is find some 'scale' weapons.

07-07-2008, 20:12
Cerealkiller195 I recommend this:

Graveguard dagger perfect size for Harad and a good look to I used 1 on my banner bearer. Unfortunately Bitzbox are out of stcok (my fault ) at the moment.

08-07-2008, 04:31

heres both of the orc captains. The first pictures a little blurry but still came out ok. Hope you enjoy!

08-07-2008, 06:08
as all of you might have noticed i'll be jokering this month.
i started painting them but in the end did not find enough time to finish them.
i blame my parents for leaving me to take care of all the animals while they went away on vacation.
next to those critters and my job i had very limited time to do anything except wash clothes and various other household chores.

i'll be finishing last month's batch this month i guess

1 captain of minas tirith
3 warriors with shields
3 warriors with bows
1 ranger of gondor

Intrepid Adventurer
08-07-2008, 06:20
My Elladan and Elrohir are done, but I once I got a camera from my g/f, I was unable to make any decent pictures!! Crap, I didn't know photographing mini's was that hard! So I'm still working on it, they're done and coming your way.

This month: Elven swords... well -elves. ;)

09-07-2008, 21:03
I'm on course to get some very pointy dwarf characters done, and I've assembled and based my rangers, iron guard and ballista. The rate I'm going will slow right down though when I start tale of 40k and tale of fantasy painters.

Edit: I got a Dain off ebay so now I have all my named characters. Noticed that Dain is Balin with the arms and top of the head changed. Bit peeved about that.

09-07-2008, 22:19
Yeah, the Balin/Dain model is a really sad page in the book of GW's history.

Tough I want to submit Shelob for this month, I've been busy assembling my Troll too. It's the plastic one, but pinned together, and now I can exchange the head, arms, weapons and even the armour(/drum)! It's also very nice for transport, as he's also pinned to the base. I'll get some pics of him pretty soon.
But besides all that, I'm busy painting my room at the moment, something which is a little bit bigger, but needs surprisingly little time compared to a model...

Sniper Kelly
11-07-2008, 12:55
I've finished basing my Shadow Lord. I used some slate on the base to give it a dramatic look, and added some etched brass leaves. Painting it's going to be tricky - I always struggle with black!

11-07-2008, 12:59
@Killshot: Sorry to hear about that mate, i wish you best of luck in whatever you are doing. And I hope i am doing a good enough job of rearing this monster you have made :)

You have done a fantastic job and I really appreciate you taking this over for me. Hopefully, if we run this again, I can join in. :)

12-07-2008, 12:48
Sniper kelly. Try work up about 3 highlights from chaos black and adeptus battlegrey. Then do a liberal brush of badab black (new wash) then do adeptus battle grey then codex grey on the very edges. If it looks a bit chalky at the end do a badad black wash again. It works realy well ;)

Loving the work coming out of here and i wish you all good luck on the challenge!

12-07-2008, 15:06
Right, just to prove I'm not slacking, here's a 162pts WIP.

2 Spearmen, basecoated and washed -

Elladan and Elrohir, basecoated -

So yeah, well on my way to 200pts. Cheating a little with the two heroes, but I do have the banner bearer and 3 haldir's elves with blades undercoated too, so there should be a high elf bananza at the start of August.

Mr Feral
12-07-2008, 19:29
Great job so far everyone with your various WIPs.

I finished my Hasharin:

Yah! Just four Haradrim Warriors on my desk to finish off now for this month.

14-07-2008, 11:04
Great job everyone :)

Here is a WIP i have been doing...

nice looking bunch there Sartarius, as for myself i'm slowly getting some money together to buy a raiders box. With a big gaming trip planned in 29 days i'm watching my budget pretty closely. All else fails i might have to cop out and paint a Hasharin to make up the work for this month...

15-07-2008, 09:58
Here is this months work, a bit early as im going on holiday and next month the painting will be a minimum (maybe one or two orcs if i have the time)
So here he is, th dark marshal:

15-07-2008, 23:06
Hey guys, sorry for the huge delay with last months work, I didn't manage to get everything finished on time due to exams and a holiday near the end of june rendered me completely unable to take any pics as a last resort so i could at least send it over the net. Here's all last months completed stuff, I think I'll be painting about 120 points worth of mini's this month in order to catchup on what I've missed out on though.

I'll be painting my KoMT Captain this month, along with the remaining rangers(2) and a cell of 4 WoMT.

@Everyone: You've all made some great progress! Can't wait to see everyone's next update!

Sniper Kelly
20-07-2008, 22:30
Hi all,

Just an update on my Shadow Lord. I might try adding some more highlights, but I'll do that after I've finished the foot version.

20-07-2008, 23:11
I'm so far behind this month have to stop sculpting and start painting again -this is as far as I've got:

Just the basecoats done no shading or highlighting yet. The Captain is part of next months lot but I assembled him at the same time as the Bosun and he's on standby should I need a quick 55pts. 2 small conversions here the Captain is now leaning on a rock rather than the ropes which I didn't like and the Bosun has a pouch of bolts for his crossbow.

Slight modification to my painting list I now plan to just do 1 Bosun, 2 Archers and 3 Arbalesters for 96 pts. this month (the Arbelesters are assembled but not yet painted).

21-07-2008, 14:09
Great looking work guys, fantastic. Mine are coming along VERY slowly...

Death Korp
21-07-2008, 15:15
Very good work guys keep it up :)

mine also are coming along slowly, but surely :D (Excuses, excuses :D)

25-07-2008, 11:04
Right then dudes (and dudettes?), I've got some WIP goodness I desperately need help with. Critisms please.

Right, then this is Elladan (or Elrohir, not sure which is which). I'm not too sure if he's "too fantasy" in his paint scheme. Nmm has not been finished. I'm going for a CMON score, so suggestions to beat this lot (http://www.coolminiornot.com/51022)would be appreciated.

And the other twin with NMM sword and gauntlet (with a small mistake).

Which one do you guys prefer?

25-07-2008, 11:10

This spearmen showcases how the purple will be painted. Suggestions for improvements?

NMM gold

Scalemail tester - I'm not sure I like this. I thought about putting a Baal red wash over the top. What do you guys think?

And a group WIP of this months painting effort so far.

25-07-2008, 12:46
Woah great stuff nightsword. It looks just like my mates army that he painted rescently. The purple looks a bit flat on his left leg. Or isn't that done? The colour looks great but from the angle it doesn't show much depth ;) Maybe a further away shot from the side and the front.

Ok Elladan. With the face? It looks a bit to dramatic and a tiny bit blotchy on the face. I'm not sure how your standard painting is and your best model to date, but the depth and highlights need to be a bit more blended (from dark to light) if your going for a top CMoN score. Sorry to be a pain since i'm not the greatest painter but i have managed many wins in painting comps at my GW so i have some experience.

How many layers would you use on the NMM? Also how watered down are your paints when there used?

Sorry if i ain't helping but pm me if you have a heap more questions :D

Cheers Liamrob. The purple on his left leg went a tad wrong, so that's just been rebased with hormagaunt purple, hence why its flat.

My best model would be my competition bloodletter I think, which I really tried to push. It's by no means perfect though. I'll work on the skin as I progress as I'm trying to paint them all to a high standard. I can see around the nose that there's a highlight gone astray in particular.

For the NMM, the paint is thinned so it's literally like coloured water, though I did rush and try to recorrect Elrohir's gauntlet, but it needs scrapping and redoing again. Elrohir's blade however, was carefully blended from a mixture of chaos black/codex grey to pure codex grey, adding in small amounts each time. I tried a few different recipes, but my knowledge of shadows and highlights need work and it ended up being rather "cartoony", something I'm trying to avoid. The gold I used was:

*snakebite and calthan brown mix
*Wash Ogryn flesh
*highlight snakebite and bleached mix
*highlight again but with more bleached
*highlight bleached

I could add in a fine white highlight too.

Thanks for the advice mate. Any suggestions about his tunic and sword?

I'll be late posting this months work as I have just started my 3 week trip offshore.

25-07-2008, 18:34
For the robe sort of thing hanging from the belt i would try a khemri brown or bleached bone sort of cream. In my head it looks good but we will have to see it on a mini first.

One thing with NMM is the light and shadows. The NMM on the wood elves so far is really good :D Also that final white highlight on the most prominent edges i think is a must have ;) Even on the gold when people say just go to bleached bone. I myself am not a master at NMM since i have only done it on a few models. I still need improvement :p but you are off to a great start!

Haha i don't know which elf is which either but the one with one blade. Most people i have seen paint it put a few little free hand details. Like a trim or something at least to break the cloak up since it is a very flat area. The grey cloak.... hmmm something doesn't seem right. Maybe try blending it together with badab black?

If your really looking for inspirition on really bright highlights and warm colours to make it look realistic. Look no further then DAX :p

I wish i could jump into this TOLotRPs with a wood elf army but i don't know what DK would say.

25-07-2008, 19:36
Cheers mate. I'm sure if we shouted loud enough Death Korps MIGHT let you jump in. I could abuse him some more? :D (I'm kidding DK).

I'll try the cream idea out. Probably in Kommando Khaki (it's a favorite of mine lol). I'll test the white out. The guide I have (my avatar) has little dots of white. I'll give the freehand a go. It'll be my first try :S

I'll work on the cloak. The two blades twin will get the same, so I better get it right.

And I don't know how Dax does it. It's so clean and precise. Cheers buddy.

25-07-2008, 21:14
Haha free hand. My first tries were only tactical squad symbols on marines ;)

No i can do swirly lines on capes etc. and simple designs with minimal detail :p. It just takes patience. Also i wouldn't go any smaller than a 2/0 or 0 brush size.

Good luck :D

Yes Dax is a painting legend...

I have come to accept that I won't get the Mordor army painted in the project timeframe, because of my other painting commitments. Namely Rohan.

With those in mind, I'd like to change from Black Gate to Theoden's Host, using the following list:

Gamling, horse, royal standard: 110
Erkenbrand, horse: 75
4 Outriders, horses: 60

3 Royal Guard, horses, throwing spears: 54

10 riders of rohan (5 with bows): 130
5 riders of rohan, throwing spears: 75

total: 504

I've been painting this list already, and finished Erkenbrand and an Outrider last month, and Gamling this month. Pics

Sorry for the changeover everyone, but it became unavoidable.

@ Liamrob: I am kind, i'll let you in. You're doing Wood Elves anyway for the Ammobunker event i'm running :)

@Everyone who has painted nice stuff: Very good job all, keep it up! :)

@Nightsword: That NMM is really nice, i must say!

So, i am leaving for 3 days in London in about half an hour, so i won't be here. But, i might as well leave you what i have done so far.....

5 Easterlings. Need to do another 5 and a banner for this month....

Keep up the smashing work guys! :)

26-07-2008, 10:31
@ Liamrob: How could I forget, I've done tactical symbols before too, as well as a freehand dark angels logo, so basically I'm lying. I've never done freehand like this though. BTW, I think I will strip Elladan and start again. It's not as smooth as it could be which I think is why the cloak looks wierd. I'll try and thin the paint even more. I'll do Elrohir first and see how that fairs.

@ Sniper Kelly: The shadow lord looks great.

@ Dax: What the hell happened?! Your painting was so good and you've reduced it to this? Tsk. I used to respect you man... :D I'm joking of course, even your basecoated models looks superb. Very annoying.

@Crisis: The michael jackson tribute team are looking sweet.

@Leviro: The metal of the marshall looks very good, but I think some tidying up of the cloak could make it really striking. The colours used for the horse are very dark. Maybe add a a new colour to the mix, like painting the horse a different colour so it contrasts with the black dress robe thing. If it were me, I'd probably make the dress robe thing a contrasting colour but hey, it's your piece.

@ Lorelorn: Looking very lorny lorn, but may I make a suggestion? I would probably add a wash into the crevices of the hair to deepen the contrast. It looks a bit yellow at the moment. Maybe add a highlight to the shields too?

@ Death Korps: Hey hey, good news for liamrob. Nice work so far, those sculpts for the easterlings look very strange in how they're proportioned and all. I think I would add a highlight to the red on the very edges, maybe a mix of blood red/blazing orange, just to sharpen the colour a little more. The red covers such a large areas, I think the models required a further highlight. The gold is lookings could. Maybe add a little dot of shining gold/mithril silver (or burnished gold, man I love that colour) to the very top of each scale and around the edges of the armour/helmet, just to make it super shiny. Blend it in nicely and it'll look super cool. Like a penguin.

26-07-2008, 10:59
Thanks for the suggestion Nightlord. I'm thinking I'll try a wash of desert yellow. Also now I look at Gamling I could improve the eyes on the mounted version.

Oh, and your NMM gold is looking spot on, thanks for posting the recipe too!

Everyone else's painting is looking great, I'm really enjoying this project thread.

26-07-2008, 11:22
No probs Lorelorn. I took the NMM recipe from Razza's Prince Yriel (my avatar), except that uses a shade of terracotta rather than the Ogryn Flesh wash. He also uses chaos black to shade the very darkest regions, but I ain't eavy metal standard so I'm just trying to get to grips with it.

It's a fun project, except every model seems to go wrong for me. It's so frustrating. I'm in way over my head...

26-07-2008, 11:37
Hi all

Computer problems so a tad late

Here are last months mini's 10 warriors of harad with spears and banner

And this months (chieftain on horse with a lance and 6 watchers)

Everyones projects are looking good! I added a sideline project of orcs for any comments etc.

26-07-2008, 15:13
@Crisis_Core: nice rangers, I love the dark colours on them.
@Nighsword: lovely NMM gold there! The purple works surprisingly good on them too.

So, here is my entry for this month, pretty much finished. On these pics you can't see her belly very well, which is a shame as that's one of the most special features of her, as I made it like in the book, sickingly pale.

26-07-2008, 23:04

Sorry - watchers of karma (not orcs;))

27-07-2008, 02:21
Thanks a heap DK ;)

Once i pickup a few more elves i'll start. Probably with my legolas in August. Since i have a heap of marines to get done :D

Very nice peoples :D although i'm not to much of a fan of the goldy silver there arobe.

C-coen does the base needs some touching up? Great work though :D I never would have the guts to paint so much black lol.

28-07-2008, 15:44
Here's a quick update on my NMM effort:

And some news. I'm afraid I'm going to have to drop out. In two months, I've yet to finish an elf I'm happy with, and I'm using a very time consuming technique thats fair above my ability. Combined with all the other rubbish my ex is putting me through, its proving to be highly demotivating. I'm going to continue with my elves in my own project log and hopefully some of you will be kind enough to comment on them there.

Thanks for your support so far and good luck guys, I'll keep an eye on progress.

28-07-2008, 17:39
It's a shame you're forced to leave this log, Nightsword, but I can see this technique truly costs a lot of time, and, tough worth it, isn't really useful when working with a deadline. And then a stupid ex who spoils it even more..
Anyway, I'll surely visit your own log, I was looking forward to (once) see an army of those Galadhrim.. some of my fave mini's painted in beautiful NMM gold... :D

Arobe: nice conversion on the archer (warg rider body+axe/spearman legs, right?). Your mounted chief looks pretty good too. It's kinda strange to see so much yellow on mini's, as it's not a colour many people use (especially in LotR), quite a colourful host on the table that is (going to be..)!
Just noticed your models are a tad shiney.. varnish?

Liamrob: I hope you're aiming at the side of the base, as the stuff on top is finished...!

28-07-2008, 17:58
Your too kind C-coen, and its that sort of inspiring comment that will make me keep at it. I think Liamrob means the side of the base, as the top of the base looks great and suits Shelob, ahem... down to the ground.

@ Arobe: If I can make but a suggestion? I'd add a drybrush of dheneb stone (or khaki or bleached) on the base, and maybe a devlan mud wash on the grass. It looks a little plain if you don't mind me saying. I quite like the yellow, but the blue does seem rather glossy.

29-07-2008, 08:26
Ah Nightsword! Another victim falls :( As Coen has said, a shame, especially since you've been blessed(more like...infected) with the irritating ex. That being said I'll definately check out your log, always good to see other Galadhrim painters - maybe I can help you see the light with the whole metallics thing :p

Update time...

Hooray for half finished minis =]

29-07-2008, 08:30
nightsword its a shame that your leaving and im sorry for your troubles...but when u start ur new WIP i will comment as soon as possible...loved your early work

Arobe: nice conversion on the archer (warg rider body+axe/spearman legs, right?).

Spot on

Your mounted chief looks pretty good too. It's kinda strange to see so much yellow on mini's, as it's not a colour many people use (especially in LotR), quite a colourful host on the table that is (going to be..)!
Just noticed your models are a tad shiney.. varnish?

Yes I use a wash of smoke to finish the models tamiya x-19

Not that the photos show it but it takes the bright shinny out of the colours and dulls it all back a bit.

I've got a friend teaching me how to take photos of mini's, hopefully the blue and yellow don't reflect so much next time

30-07-2008, 22:49
Well I made it - just. Managed to get everything painted at the weekend note to self don't leave it so late again!

plus I even managed to do the Ballista at the last minute. Needs to be based before Friday.

The crew are on page 1 of this thread and this month's stuff is in my personal log. Well looking forward to seeing everyone's work on Friday.
