View Full Version : My new project log

It's been too long since I had chance to throw myself into my hobby, but things have eased a little bit, TOFP 2008/2009 is looming and I am part of the TOLOTRP, coupled with a fully functioning camera and a new PC and I really have no excuse not to get a half decent project log up and running.

I have loads of projects on the go at any one time, far too many to list here, but I'll try and give regular updates of varied projects to keep you all entertained.

I have been meaning to get round to this first project for an absolute age, and now I hope to have most of it done by the end of this week, it's a trench/mud/cityfight table for 40k.

Here are the very first WIP pics...

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x15/75hastings69/CIMG1515.jpg

It's going to be trench at one end, then an area of wet mud (like the bases of my DKoK) then an area of ruined buildings.

Good to see you back mate. Nice start to the table, bet those FW trenches set you back a bit? Looking forward to more.

Subscribed! I always thought that trench system looked decent, but was too pricey. Seeing it in your table however, makes me want to play 40k again! That is going to be an awesome table!

What's wrong with just continuing your old log?
Anyways, I'm interested in following your progress. :)

I just felt the old log had run it's course. This one aims to have more actual WIP and finished minis rather than just chat about me maybe doing something one day, a new start of sorts.

Looking good... Is it going to be modular in any way?

16-07-2008, 10:53
Wow that "Battle for Hoff" table is looking good already. I am lovin the huge building too. It looks like you are aiming for some buildings that will actually block LOS.

75hastings69
16-07-2008, 11:02
Not modular at all. I wanted a realistic effect especially for the mud so went with a fully modelled board, I have space to store them now so it isn't an issue (yet). Off into town in a minute to buy some polyfilla ready for stage II.

Nicely done mate.

We done one like this for our club, without the FW goodness, just ***** cutting... but still looks cool...

One small suggestion I would like to make, that is polystyrene is not as good as the pink foam that is as easily picked up, it's a bit more durable and is more easily manipulated.

Might be worth a shout but you seem to be doing a fatastic job as it is.

75hastings69
16-07-2008, 14:52
Yeah I have been really struggling to find the pink foam here in N.I. I was just going to put plastic strips on the edges to protect them. I will look into the pink foam though, it will make things easier in the long run.

I found some in B&Q the other day, in smaller sheets but might be wirth a look if you have those over there.

Jedi152
16-07-2008, 14:59
I managed to find large sheets of pink foam sold as loft insulation in B&Q. It was about3 inches think and sold in blocks of 4 sheets.

Cool board, makes me want to get on with my FW trenches.

On ya big building try stuffing the bottom with chunks of that white stuff(brain has stopped working)makes it look like its collasped on itself and easy to do,had mine with broken pipes sticking out with water effect all over the ground.

Looking great !

Do you plan on permanently fixing the buildings in place ?

(oh, and subscribed)

75hastings69
17-07-2008, 17:29
I think so, I plan on having crashed rhinos and other scenery bits that tie in to the whole board so whilst it is going to make the board more awkward to move it 'should' enhance the look of it.

No polyfilla in my village has slowed me down, so I'll have to get stuck in this weekend.

I have made some progress on the board this evening, today was a bit of a double edged sword, I got the polyfilla I needed, but the in-laws arrived so I wasn't able to spend as much time as I would have liked on my board.

Here are the fruits of tonights labours... (BTW the trench pieces have been removed for painting)...

As a bonus I just found an old case when I was cleaning out the loft, it had a load of scenery in it, but also quite a few minis, including 30 of the direct only arrer boys and a huge unit of Ruglud's Armoured Orcs - chuffed to bits as I had forgotten I even owned them! expect to see them in this log sometime soon.

Space that hopefully me and Silverstu will be occupying sometime this year Alan, if all goes to plan he shall be the first to play on it.

There are a lot of details I want to add to the interiors of my buildings (i.e. wiring, pipework etc.).

BTW did you spot the Transformers Animated Bulkhead and Grimlock on the window ledge? god I am a sucker for toys!

Right, I'm back at work for 3 weeks now, so there will not be any progress pics of the table until I get home, I do have all the stuff I need for it now, although I am guessing that I am going to need more of MIGs wet mud sets before I am finished!

Hi Hastings,
very good and clean paint job. For a higher standard you should add mor deepness in the miniatures means that it needs more contrast in your colour transistion. Deeper shadows, lighter highlights. Best way if you work with an imaginary light source, best choice for starting a zenital light.
In my opinion these things are the most important thing painting a TT-miniature for gaming. Donīt care for smooth blending this is only visible in a distance of 10-30 cm. But the contrast and light spots on a miniatures are also visible in a distance of 3 m because our eyes are very sensitiv for white and contrast maximizing is the first step in nervous signal converting which happens directly on your retina. Itīs needed for seeing edges and so your 3 dimensional view and thatīs why contrast maximizing on your miniature helps a viewer in 3 m distance to your Gaming table to see that these are great miniatures.

Regards GeOrc

Foundation mechrite red, badab black wash, H/L mechrite red, adding Blood Red for final H/L. I didn't really want to go any lighter than that.

ive gotta say this all looks great especially the boards and the termies, i think that if you make an effort to post and paint these we should do the same and try to offer some constructive critisism, from what i can see your work is great but could be made fantastic by a final highlight in some places eg the trolls on the page before, i think you should highlight the top of each scale and perhaps darken the bottom, add a few glazes of tourquoise and you will have a great piece.

Also what is that dreadnought type model on the right hand side of your windowsil in the first picture on the first page?

Thanks, Chaos Mortal

LOL! That is "Bulkhead" he's an Autobot from the new Transformers Animated cartoon that I picked up in Hong Kong, I also have TA Grimlock, Swoop and an even bigger (about 15 inches high) version of Bulkhead.... they do look pretty odd displayed alongside my Masters of the Universe statues!!!

Thanks for your advice about H/L I'll probably give that a go. Until just this last few weeks I have never really bothered with washes or glazes.

I should have some new pics up in the next few days, as I have been so busy I haven't even picked up a brush since my last entry on this log, but I have now made a start on this months TOFP stuff and will get it up ASAP.

Here are some WIP shots of the test mini for my 3rd TOFP army ... Chaos Daemons.

This is my first time trying out some techniques that have been described to me in a set of excellent tutorials, many thanks to the sender. I have mixed feeling so far, I am happy with the almost "coloured in" feel of some of the areas of the mini - especially the larger of the claws, but the undercoat must have gone on a little rough as I don't seem to be getting a very smooth finish. Also I am pissed off with the mold lines! these new daemonettes are a really nice kit, but they are so detailed and fine that the mold lines are a real bitch to get off, especially on some of the heads! and the worst thing is that this batch was covered in mold lines, I took hours with super fine sandpaper getting shot of them, and now the paint is going down I have found even more!!!!

Anyway here are some WIP shots of my first test mini. Sorry about the bad pics. I have yet to sort out the black, and any help on getting rid of the rough finish to my white undercoat would be appreciated.

She looks great.

The blending technique on those claws looks very familiar.
Do I know the sender of these tutorials?

I have found the key to the rough undercoat thing is two or three thin coats of the base colour before you start blending.

Termies look great as well.

Nice to see some old favorite son the previous page. I was right about the green edges on those troll bases. They look stunning now in contrast to the dark bases. The additional colour was a big distraction and spoiled the whole limited pallette thing you have going on.

The improvement in your painting makes me look like I am standing still. Great stuff mate.

Yes you know the sender ;) I have also been getting a few tips off some other good painters, and these forums are always a source of inspiration and knowledge.

I'll give that base colour technique a try as I feel the roughness of some areas of the mini have ruined the overall effect. Luckily I have another 39 of these to do for my army so I should be able to rectify that problem ..... probably by the last one or something!

I am going to go back and add more purple to the mithril silver (as there is some in there) as I don't think it is visible enough at the minute.

I'm adding another 3 stone trolls to my unit for O&G and I'll get pics of them up soon, now if I could only remember how I did them....... (note to self, start writing notes of palettes used etc.)

@ Hastings,
looks very very good. I can see the thin colouring and so the miniature looks more coloured and not painted. Thatīs a great difference in creating miniatures more realistic. The demonette miss some deepnes, thatīs why I would add some more shadows where needed.
Because of the roughness. Some tips:
Itīs important to use GW undercoat. Sure you have but I would mention it.
It s also important to shake the can very very long to mix gas and paint very fine to get a good spray. A good spray is fine and has small paint particles. Avoid a to large distance when priming more than 25 - 30 cm will lead to the problem that particles build larger clusters and create a to rough undercoat. Better less distance and spraying in a quicker movement over the miniature. Also avoid less distance to the miniature, this will lead to a cloased thick undercoat. Also take care to get a homogenous undercoat. Remember the 45° angles and take care to count shots to get homogenous. Correct the undercoat with short spray shots where needed to get a homogenous result.
I think the problem is a combination of less shaking and a to large distance to the miniature. It ould be good to see a close detailed pic of your primed miniature.

Normaly there shouldnīt be a rough surface left after painting the miniature. This menas there must be an error we should find and eliminate because I wanna see more of this quality.

Regards GeOrc

Thanks Georg, I primed some more last night and I think I must have had the spray to far away when undercoating that mini, the undercoat (it is GW by the way) went on much smoother last night, so I will be hoping for a better result. I will also try to add more depth, but the mini that I pictured doesn't look as washed out in real life, I think the picture makes it look lighter than it is in real life.

Thanks for the tips though mate.

Hastings you may have one of the white undercoats from the dud batch ;) I had one of them and all i did was return it to the shop and it was replaced. Is their any white paint or dust forming down the front of the can or in front of the nozzle?

It is really nice ;) Although yes i see how the undercoat is terrible.

Your painting has really improved since your first minis on here way back in one of your old logs :D Keep it up!

Yes there is, loads of white dust on the can in front of the nozzle, like the consistency of talc. Maybe that is what the problem was then?

Thankyou very much for your comments, hopefully with more practice I can get slowly better as time goes by.

Yeah that is one of the dud spray cans ;)

Call up your closest GW and see if they allow the swap overs. Otherwise you may have to get it swapped through mail order.

The spray that comes out is lumpy and not as consistent as it should be.

Sorry I don't mean to hijack the thread but I saw the posts about the spray can and was wondering if this was what you were referring to. If so I think that I will go to GW for an exchange.

Yup that is what it looks like ;)

That what yours looks like anybody else reading this :P Take it back to exchange. Unless you wanna keep it for snow effects :P

Yeah sorry for the hi jack Hastings.

EDIT: Also if that is happening you only get about half of what is in your spray can ;)

But you heard all that praise before! Keep it up! I look forward to your next updates.

Yeah I have been really struggling to find the pink foam here in N.I. I was just going to put plastic strips on the edges to protect them. I will look into the pink foam though, it will make things easier in the long run.

Above is link for great Ebay seller, who sells the blue version, very durable..

A small update due to work being nuts (as is becoming more usual!).

This is the WIP for month 1 of my TOFP VC army. I am going to finish all of the bases at the same time to ensure they are kept to quite a tight theme.

Really lovely skintones on that Vargulf- loving it- very nice and pale. As always up to your very impressive standards. What theme are you going to do the bases?

Huh! I have failed to see any of your works before. I have to say you got some skills! And i am very very jealous of you for that warhammer table. :)

Do you have any big picture on a painted army or such to show? Or do you only paint odd minis here and there?

That Varghulf is awesome. Almost identical to the one painted for the army book, but that's ok - that scheme works well.
