View Full Version : TOLotRPs Month 3 (Julys Finished Models and WIP Thread)

Hello, its me again, with another round of LOTR painters. Like some of you crazy people, i have joined ALL 3 TOPs (Including a challenge on the Ammobunker that i am running too) so i am going to be in a painting frenzy for a bloody long time. Also, i am going to try to be more active here, and give you all support.

Also, i am sorry to say we have had 2 people leave our ranks last month, who are:

Both of them have done brilliantly well (Nightsword for his good painting tips, NMM andmaking us jealous of his painting ;) ) and Killshot for coming up with the idea in the first place. Hopefully, they'll be able to return to us next time we do this.

Anyway, enough chit-chat from me, and here is the same old thingy majig first...

Hello, and welcome to the 3nd month of the Tale of LotR Painters! This is where the people who joined up to this post their WIPs for August and Julys Finished Models.

Your WIP models are NOT put into one post like the other TOPs, as I don’t want to be restrictive, and I want to have as many posts of piccies in these threads each month as possible.
At the beginning of next month, you will have ONE post showing 3 pictures of models you have done, and 1 picture with the army so far (in the same format as the TOPs threads), but the posts of WIPs after that are unrestrictive like this month. This is to make sure that I can see who has done their models for that month.

Hope you understand that!

Here are all the people who have joined and what army/ies they are doing:

And for all you people who don’t know…

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to complete a 500 point LOTR army in the next six months.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 100 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 6 months. Starting with the first day of June 2008.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc., they get one 'Joker'. For one month within the six months you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post saying, "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 5 Months they have to come up with (approx) 100 points of painted and based figures. 100 points for 5 out of the next 6 months.

In six months time we will all end up with a finished 500 point army.

All chat, questions, discussion, WIP, painting advice, encouragement, tutorials, etc, etc, should be on this thread.

A new thread will be opened on the first day of each month (and will remain open for a week) for each painter to post one, and only one post with the next 100 point ‘update’ for the army they are painting and a picture of the army to date.
(OR one post for EACH army for those nutters painting more than one army!)

I will just take this opportunity to thank all the painters who have signed up for their interest and enthusiasm and for their ideas that have helped shape this project. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope this project is a big success for everyone involved. I also hope all you Warseers enjoy these results of all the work of the painters involved.

Cheers and have fun!

Death Korp

(Also, i have put a poll up to see if you are enjoying this :) )

Well, i might aswell get the ball rolling...

Painted: 4x Bowmen
4x Swordsmen
2x Pikemen
1x Banner Bearer

Thoughts: I am pretty proud of myself for finishing these guys, as i don't really like painting them (I'm all Chaosy at the moment). But, they're done, so that is all that matters.

The Army so far:

What am i painting this month?

*Easterling Captain with Halberd
*3 Easterlings w/ Shield and Pike
*1 Easterling w/ Bow
*1 Easterling w/ Shield

About 101pts or so...

Lets see your stuff y'all :D

I'll be the first person that isn't Death Korp to post then ;)

Last month's result:

What I didn't finish, so is on the agenda this month to start with:

So it's these Haradrim Warriors and four more to do, and then I'll probably start on the Corsairs next month. Good times!

ps. Nice Easterlings Death Korp!

Where is everyone?

Army: The Corsair Fleets

Units: 1 Bo'sun, 2 Corsairs with Bows, 3 Arbalesters

Painting/Conversions: The Ballista is converted obviously and it was painted to match the one in the film even if it doesn't resemble it in appearance and I tried to use similar colours to the Corsairs. I added a pouch of crossbow bolts to the Bo'sun. The rest are painted the same as last month no change.

Highs: Getting the Ballista done at the last second.

Lows: Having to do everything in the last week as I got distracted with other projects and gaving to paint more Arbalesters! at least thats all 6 done now.

Points this month: 96 pts. (the ballista doesn't count points wise as it doesn't officially exist)
Overall Total: 198 pts. (oops 2 pts. short)

Onto the pictures, good and big at Nightsword's request.

Bo'sun and 2 Archers:

3 Arbalesters:

Ballista and Crew:

Army to date:

This month I'll be painting:
1 Captain
1 Corsair with bow (last one)
4 Corsairs with Pikes
3 Corsairs with swords
and if I can fit them in 3 Corsair Raiders

03-08-2008, 03:35
In terms of last months mini's, I unfortunately have to unleash the dreaded card.
Unfortunately I was hit by a huge bout of procrastination when painting and I wasn't really happy with the deviation from the generic ranger scheme. Also, when stripping some of my old Womt i found out that the gloss primer i had sprayed on them(all those years ago) had eaten into the plastic, making it just unbearable and frustrating to paint what would be generally easy plate. Never mind that though.

So for this month I'll be painting loads of characters - should be slightly easier than last month, and I won't be tearing my hair out over how much I need to do. So for this month I have planned:

-Captain of MT w.Shield, Horse
-3 Warriors of MT

03-08-2008, 07:15
im sorry guys i got no pics of my stuff for last months work....yet i gotta go on holiday this week as well which means a lack of a camera...so DK hope you dont mind if i post my pics next week when i got time
cheers all
this month i will be mostly painting my captain of dol amroth and (hopefully) finishing those darn rangers

Hi all,

Here's my painting for the month, the Shadow Lord, foot and mounted. I've also been working on a Slave master and Morannon captain, but these aren't part of the main project.

Next month I'll be starting on a Mordor Troll.

03-08-2008, 15:28
Woah looking good Dax!

Sorry to hear about that Crisis. That blows :(

For some reason some of the piccies aren't loading... I think it is my slow net playing around. Sorry Dk and Feral :(

Ok i'll probably jump in next month since i have the To40kp to start off with. Don't want to much of a burden! The summary of the wood elf army will be 69 models or 75 models. 800 points. Going to try and get painted before October 23rd for a tournament. If not i'll just continue. Does anyone care if i paint heaps and post it up or will it discourage you?

Intrepid Adventurer
03-08-2008, 17:37
*sigh* I still don't have a camera set up. If I don't manage it this month, I'll just drop out, because without mini's I'm not really participating, am I?

I'll do my best, though.

And, of course: excellent work so far everyone! I hugely enjoy seeing all the photo's!

03-08-2008, 18:01
I will not be able to post my other Cave Troll until 16th Aug when I get home. All looking really nice so far though guys.

03-08-2008, 19:45
I'll post 100 plus points of characters in the next few days. I've already started this months stuff, and may even have it finished by the end of the first week to concentrate on 40k and fantasy painters for the rest of the month.

05-08-2008, 10:53
Right then, finished Shelob:

As I still have my holiday (less then 3 weeks left...) I might go and paint my Mordor Troll, tough the Mordor Orcs are also a possibility. I might change my armylist, as I don't want to buy a load of Uruks anymore, they don't fit with my current armies. I might buy one/two blister and some trackers instead.

07-08-2008, 16:39
Well in an attempt to resusitate the thread I'll post some of this month's WIPs.

First Up my Captain and 2 Corsairs

Next 3 Corsair Raiders (proxy Harad Raiders) these weren't part of my original list but then neither was the Ballista. I'm hoping to paint these 3 this month. Check my log for a conversion guide.

Raider no. 4

Raider no. 5 (Harad chieftain proxy hence the sword and bow)

Raider 4 & 5 won't get painted until next month or October but they will be done before the end.

I've painted another 3 Corsairs as well as the Captain and his 2 (95 pts. done)so I have 3 more to paint this month.

07-08-2008, 17:24
Saw those over at TLA, they're looking yummie!
I especially like the painting on the captain (the blue) and the converted mounted chieftain, as he has quite the pose you expect him to have, good work!
The ballista is great too, crewmen look as if they have always been like that!

Have been working on some warg rider and orc conversions today and yesterday. Might have some pics tomorrow.
I've also converted 2 Rohirrim and Éomer for my Viking-styled Rohan army, and painted a test figure. Tough not for this log, it was nice nonetheless.

08-08-2008, 08:25
Nightsword for his good painting tips, NMM and making us jealous of his painting

Ha. You lie, you lie!

@ Death Korp: That's a sizable horde you got coming along there. They're looking good, though might I suggest an edging highlight to define the scales a little more? :D

@ Mr Feral: I really like the assassin model, the black is looking partiucarly sweet. Those 4 haradrim are looking good also.

@ Dax: Standard procedure really innit? I wonder how I can describe your work? How about *clean and precise and I don't understand how you get the highlights so fine* like always. The whole army together looks great, and thanks for the bigger pictures!

@ Crisis, Sartarius, liamrob, intrepid adventurere, hastings and ben: Excuses the lot of you!

@ Sniper: Nice looking horde, and a nice job with the shadow lord. Are you planning on adding the markings on his cape like eavy metal did?

@c-coen: Didn't you post incy wincy spider last month? ;)

@ Dax (again): You're a machine. I've already commented on your raiders, but your painting is consistently high as ever.

Nightsword *Swish*

08-08-2008, 09:13
@c-coen: Didn't you post incy wincy spider last month?

That was a WIP (tough pretty much finished). My real entry for last month were Gorbag and Shagrat..!

08-08-2008, 09:45
Ah, that's alright then ;)

Death Korp
08-08-2008, 14:22
@Dax: Nice Corsairs and Riders mate! The army is really coming along.

@Crisis_Core: Sorry to hear that mate. I hope the characters you are painting keeps your hair in place :D

@Sniper_Kelly: Really nice army you have there, the Shadow lord looks very imposing!

@C_Coen: Shelob looks nasty (In the nice way i mean :D)

@Nightsword: I don't lie!!!

@Everyone Else: Lets get going guys, we are starting to lose momentum!

As for me, no progress yet this month as i have no black spray and i have been camping for the past 4 days. But, when i get the black spray, all of that will change!

Mr Feral
08-08-2008, 18:45
dax, you leave me such a high standard to match for my next month's painting task doing lots of Corsairs. :p I assume from what I see is there's a lot of folds and creases with their clothing? If so, then that's good since it suits my painting style better :)

Sniper Kelly, good job on the Shadow Lord. Are you going to be adding in those blue bits on his sleeves?

C-Coen, great Shelob!

Death Korp, I'm still going strong! I have 8 Haradrim Warriors going at the moment and they shall be completed by the end of next week by the latest.

09-08-2008, 17:19
Nightsword I use a Series 7 000 to do the really fine details and a steady hand helps as well. If you have shakey hands brace your wrist against the edge of the desk to steady it, it feels weird at first but you get used to it.

Mr. Feral I look forward to seeing your Corsairs and yes there are lots of folds on the Corsairs clothing.

Right I have to stop working on things that don't count points wise for the tale!!!

Another Ballista finished this is for an article I'm writing for TLA I couldn't do a step by step guide using the first Ballista so I built another one. This will get painted in month 6 I'd say.

with the crew (pre sculpting).

Kroot Lord
10-08-2008, 14:15
dax, your work looks amazing! It always did, ofcourse! I especially like your conversions, your ideas and your sculpting!

Here is what I did in month one. It consists of:

2 Men at Arms, 3 Rangers of Gondor, 1 Knight of Dol Amroth on foot, 1 Knights of Dol Amroth on horse and finally 3 Clansmen.

This makes for a total of 97 points!

Here is my month 2 entry, my Boromir. This fellow costs me 105 points, upping the total to 202 points.

Thanks for the advice Dax, I was thinking about picking a series 7 or two, so that's really helpful. My hands are fairly steady (i actually do what you suggested! That or I paint on my knee), its just my brush control that needs work, especially with the fine detail. Cheers. The new ballista is good, be nice to see your guide when its done :)

@ Kroot lord: Nice work, but I think your black needs a little work. Some of the highlights are too thick, and there are aren't enough layers of colour between each highlight. Check out this article for some advice:

Hi all,

Here's the latest addition to my army, a Mordor Troll.

Death Korp
18-08-2008, 12:25
Hey all, its been a while :) Busy doing summer holiday stuff (and buying Gears of War. Not the best idea when doing a TOP :D ). I haven't even started my 6 Easterling models, let alone any of my WFB or 40K models :D Poor start from me...

@Mr Feral: Get them 8 Haradrim done! They'll look awsome when done!

@Dax: The Ballistas are really coming on mate, wish i could scratcbuild like that!

@Kroot Lord: The KoDA looks amazing! I am really liking this army at the moment!

@Sniper Kelly: The Mordor Troll looks brilliant mate, keep it up!

I will make a start on my stuff today since i have finally bought some black spray..

Mr Feral
18-08-2008, 14:15
Kroot Lord, good choice of colours for your Fiefdoms troops. The black highlights need a bit of working on though (personally I never use pure white as a highlight)

Sniper Kelly, great Troll! How was the plastic kit to work with?

Death Korp, aye sir! I'll get them completed one evening soon since they're not far off done. I'll just have to brush away all the other projects to one side first and pretend they're not there. :eyebrows:

Sniper Kelly
19-08-2008, 09:41
The plastic kit's great, loads of options. The only problem is filling the joins round the sides where the two halves meet. It's worth the effort though.

19-08-2008, 17:37
I agree, that kit is very nice. Will paint mine in some months (for this log).

Here some pics, 4 of the 6 Orcs I painted yesterday/today. All have different skin tones, and various colours for clothing. I try to have them with different colours, slightly bright ones even, but with a dark overal appearance. And of course the usual amount of rust. Enjoy.

Sniper Kelly
19-08-2008, 22:43
Nice paint scheme there, some nice conversions too!

26-08-2008, 08:40
I have finished this month's painting, with Outriders and Royal Guard making up the honours this time. I'll post a pic this coming week-end.

Great work everyone else, it's good to see so many painted Lord of the Rings models!

26-08-2008, 09:25
Sniper Kelly: Thanks! I've converted pretty much all of my Orcs (including Warg Riders). More to follow! Might be a bit later, but in the first week of September should be possible.

Death Korp
27-08-2008, 14:23
Nice stuff C-Coen!

As for me, i tested out my Easerlings today, and got trounced by Harad/'Traitor' Easterlings and Hobbits ( :'( He was so lucky with the throwing stones :'( )

I will be painting a Captain and 4 dudes this month, so watch out! :D

Intrepid Adventurer
27-08-2008, 15:09
Yes! I have finally managed to take some pictures! Watch this space, I'll upload them ASAP. Though, I still can't make decent close-ups. Kroot Lord, how do you do it?

29-08-2008, 13:59
Hey lads! Good to see everyone is working hard! Almost got the rangers and the Gondorian Captain finished. I'll be trying to get the other two heroes done, but i might be rushing it as I've got a leadership camp tomorrow which takes out well, pretty much the whole day:S

@Sniper: nice troll!
@C-Coen: seen those lads on TLA, can't wait to see all the finished stuff next month!

29-08-2008, 21:00
Thanks guys!
Might be a tad late next month posting the stuff, as I kinda have to finish some of it. Some orcs and warg(rider)s that is.
Problem is, I was busy in the garden yesterday (smacking plates of reinforced concrete with a sledge :D ), and got a big blister on my thumb, which, by the time I noticed I had it, had been undone of the skin. So holding a brush kinda hurts now, but it gets less quite quickly. But maybe I shouldn't have dropped aftershave on it to disinfect.. that stuff burned for half an hour or so...
However, the first week of September might be possible still. Metals were done, half of the work on leather too...
