It's about time I started a new log up and the Tales of Painters has got me building and painting again after somewhat of a hiatus. This log will cover my marines for the 40k tale; Dark Elves for the Fantasy tale; as well as my many other random side projects as ideas pop into my head.

Marines first then. Based heavily on the Brotherhood of Steel from the Fallout series of games. Dark Angel successor chapter.

Not done much painting yet but here are the first few models with some colour to their armour. 10 man scout squad with various weapons.

Sadly my photography skills are sorely lacking. The flash has washed out most of the colour.

Armour is Charadon Granite followed by a layer of 4:1 Graveyard Earth/Shadow Grey, then highlights done by adding Rotting Flesh to that mix. Easy enough.

15-08-2008, 20:17
Your scout conversions look cool Catferret, first time I've seen them together. The colour scheme is very effective, and reminiscent of the picture that you showed...somewhere.

IS the power fist just an IG Officer power fist? Or scratchbuild?

15-08-2008, 20:20
Guard Officer powerfist. It fits better than giant marine ones on a scout.

15-08-2008, 20:24
Woop, Timface log!
Looking forward to seeing more of these.

15-08-2008, 20:27
Guard Officer powerfist. It fits better than giant marine ones on a scout.

Yeah, fair enough. The giant marine ones are about half the size of a scout.

15-08-2008, 20:33

Very nice so far. The dirty, rusty look is something different to the normal Shiny Marines MKII, so keep going on that path.

15-08-2008, 20:35
Ta. That was certainly my intention. Keep it all chipped and grimy. The vehicles will either be fun or really annoying...

15-08-2008, 20:43
Ta. That was certainly my intention. Keep it all chipped and grimy. The vehicles will either be fun or really annoying...

I'd vote for really annoying, as it'll consume a lot of your time becase of the area to scrath and make all grimy :eyebrows:

16-08-2008, 02:39
They look decent mate, I like the worn and weathered look on the armour. :)

18-08-2008, 16:14
Time for an update. The clothing is now done so took a couple of pics. It's pretty rough looking because I didn't have much time but at least it's done and out of the way so I can start the next stage (most likely the skin).

18-08-2008, 18:01
The Sergeant with bolter wants to join the Nazgul YMCA Dance Group.
And the Missile Launcher is drunk :p

Nice work though, liking how they're looking so far.

18-08-2008, 22:41
Your sergeant appears to have an 'I'll get you next time gadget' pose going for him.

Keep it up and all that usuall stuff.

18-08-2008, 22:58
These guys are starting to look really cool! Keep up the good work, hope to see them finished soon!

18-08-2008, 23:00
Resurrected: Well, they are going to have to be finished by the end of the month along with 2 Dark Elf Bolt Throwers for the Tales of Painters. Is that soon enough? ;)

Thanks for the kind words.

19-08-2008, 06:55
To mimick what otheres have been saying: OMGcatferretistehlolzorsandisfullofawesomeandepicw iniwantyourbabies!!!!!1111!1!!
They look really nice dude.

21-08-2008, 11:45
They look cool! You done anymore today?

21-08-2008, 15:18
They look cool! You done anymore today?

Cheers matey. Skin and leather is all done now. Just leaves the camo cloaks, weapons, goggles and bases now. So still way behind target. :p

21-08-2008, 18:52
The scouts look great so far!

23-08-2008, 16:45
Suppose I'm overdue an update.

I've really rushed through these guys to get them done so I'm not up to my usual standard on them. Still, they'll do for the tabletop.

Still got the inside of the cloaks, the goggles and a few other detaily things to do. Then I'm on to the bases, which will be a light sandy colour. Probably add some dead tufts of grass here and there too.

23-08-2008, 17:00
Looks good mate, keep it upski!

23-08-2008, 17:05
Cheers Bisghetto. When are you gonna paint something? ;)

23-08-2008, 22:50
Really impressive stuff man, really like the camo capes colour scheme.

24-08-2008, 06:06
Thanks Res, although since then I have redone the camo cloaks. I wasn't very happy with them so added larger bands of colour instead of small squiggles. I'll get some pics taken later on.

24-08-2008, 11:39
Got the camer charged up so here is a pic of the redone camo cloak.

Plus a sneaky peek at a WiP model I will be doing throughout the Tale. Counts as Azrael for my marines.

Just one leg started so far. Aiming for something inspired by this (http://bonusweb.idnes.cz/download/screenshoty/fallout-tactics-bos-screenshoty-dom-/fotka.250823.idn).

24-08-2008, 11:46
Oh, hot damn that camo cloak looks beautiful. How did you get that?

24-08-2008, 11:46
The scouts look cool Cat, and as for Azreals legs....they look nice. (that is meant in no way as a homsexual quote) Will he be having the nipple chain?

The bigger splodges look much btter now.

24-08-2008, 11:53
Really loving those scouts. The paintscheme is brilliant. Nice palette of colours, and really neat. Keep up the good work. :)

And thanks again about the Dreadnought arm, im very grateful. :)

24-08-2008, 12:03
Darkstarsabre: Thanks. It's a couple of coats of Dheneb Stone over black, followed by a wash of watered down Graveyard Earth in the creases. Big splodgy bits of 50/50 Kommando Khaki/Graveyard Earth then a few smaller splodges of 50/50 Graveyard Earth/Dark Flesh.

Shadowphrakt: If you mean the chain on the shoulder pad then I'm not sure yet.

Fenriz: No probs mate. Shadowphrakt will attest to my dreadnought trading reputation... ;)

24-08-2008, 12:05
Those Scouts look great, excellent choice regarding the powerfist too. I like the camo design though I liked the earlier one as well, as it was quite different than the usual patterns used.

Can't wait to see more mate.

24-08-2008, 12:07
Cheers Hivey. Nice to see you around these parts.

24-08-2008, 12:09
:D The techmarines will have you for that. :p

And forgot to mention, nice work on the camo. I know the pain it is to do (so far iv painted 96 sets of camo fatigues on my guard - i swear i dream of camo now...).

24-08-2008, 12:42
I haven't done much in the way of camo. I never finished my Grenadier army, mainly because I decided winter camo was a good idea...

The Techmarines can't complain. Those 3 dreads I sold Shadowphrakt were retired in my box of unfinished projects too. :D

24-08-2008, 12:46
The Techmarines can't complain. Those 3 dreads I sold Shadowphrakt were retired in my box of unfinished projects too. :D
They're now in my box of unfinished projects :D

24-08-2008, 12:55
Oh well, what comes around goes around, as they say... :D

24-08-2008, 14:21
About time for me to post in here too. :)

I like your painting scheme and the camo on the cloaks looks very interesting. What else have you planned for your Azrael-counts-as?

24-08-2008, 15:14
Another update. I may even be finished these guys now.

They'll do for the tabletop certainly. Means I can start on the 2 Dark Elf bolt throwers I need to do for the Fantasy Tale.

Sigur: The Azrael guy will have sculpted artificier armour (I'm tired of seeing people claiming their captains are wearing it when they've done nothing to alter mundane power armour), a big fancy sword and combi-plasmagun. It's gonna be posed fairly similarly to one of the pics in the DA Codex, so he'll have his sword planted in the ground and his helmet under one arm.

24-08-2008, 15:29
Looking good mate, keep it up.......just keep sayin 'i think i can, i think i can'......or assume my position of lookin blankly at what im suppose to be doin while beatin up my liver with delicious booze! :D

24-08-2008, 16:39
As long as there's Catferret logs to gawk at I'm not leaving. :D

Love the bases. Looking at these finished squads makes me want to go paint something, which is a very good thing indeed.

24-08-2008, 16:59
Hiveminion? Wanting to paint? Hell has been feeling awful cold lately... ;)

24-08-2008, 19:48
the scouts are sweet, love the armour scheme mate.

24-08-2008, 20:50
your colour scheme is top notch! the blue with the grey! I must say, it really pops!

Camos badass too.

24-08-2008, 23:15
These guys are great! I dont like the new capes as much as I did the old one but I can see that they look alot more realistic. These are pretty damn good for tt quality too, the details such as the stuble etc are fantastic! My favourite has to be the guy in the middle back, second picture, with the bolter. He looks badass! Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff Catferret!

25-08-2008, 01:36
Good log so far. I really like the scouts color scheme, it looks great and done to an excellent degree of painting skill. (Whether you think so or not :p) I'm curious to see your Azrael stand-in develop further. Have you considered designs for his helmet? Surely you're not going to base it off of the awkward-shaped helmet on that character from Fallout?

25-08-2008, 05:24
Thanks guys. Next update will hopefully be the Bolt Thrower crew if I can get some work done on them today.

Illuminator: Yeah, I'm going to model something similar to that helmet. It won't be an exact copy but it will heavily draw inspiration from it. I've had a few ideas how to modify a standard MkVII helmet with plasticard and GS.

25-08-2008, 18:26
Excellent work Mr. Catferret. I like the subtle choice of colours and the blue really sets off the natural look of the others. Good work on the glowing goggles as well.

How are the cloaks in real life? There doesn't look to be much shading on the pale bits in the pictures but I always find it's always tricky to get the lighting right for really pale things.

25-08-2008, 20:24
Cheers McM. The shading on the cloaks could do with another go but it'll do in the mean time. In order to get anything visible in the pics I've had to turn the flash on on the camera. Scotland has no light! :p

And now for something completely different!

Got the Dark Elf Reaper crew done today. Just the Reapers themselves to do for the end of the month.

Bad pics. The cloaks are very dark blue and the scarves are black highlighted up with Hawk Turquoise.

I'll take better pics during the daylight tomorrow.

25-08-2008, 21:25
They aren't blue and silver!

-Your- not the real catferret!

25-08-2008, 23:21
I knew something was odd about this log............IMPOSTER!

25-08-2008, 23:31
<snip>The cloaks are very dark blue <snip>

They aren't blue and silver!

-Your- not the real catferret!

False alarm methinks...

25-08-2008, 23:56
I'll take better pics during the daylight tomorrow.

Daylight? You scare me! :eyebrows:

26-08-2008, 05:44
Captain wins the literacy cookie for his reading skills. :p

Darnok: Yeah! Real daylight. It happens once a year in Scotland. The rest of the time the skies are as grey and dirty as the buildings the tourists stare at.

26-08-2008, 09:31
Nice work, especially on the Scouts. I like the worn look of their armour. Keep it up!

Monsterzonk :skull:

26-08-2008, 23:29
Monsterzonk: Vielen Dank. All my marines shall have worn armour. I want a "lived in kind of look to them.

Todays update is sadly pictureless due to my inebbriated state.

I have finished the bolt throwers, and also added grass and snow to the bases of the crew and machines. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow.

This means I have completed my target of 200 points for month one of both Tales so shall spend tomorrow painting something completely unrelated. I shall be painting a Warmachine model for a friend of mine. Thankfully it's a Cygnar Warjack so I can carry on with blue and silver. ;)

27-08-2008, 01:09
Congratz on your boozled state! the biscuit salutes you sir! :D

27-08-2008, 10:58
Here is a pic of the completed Reapers and crew. Although it doesn't show up in the pic, there is a woodgrain pattern on the wooden parts.

Next month I'll do a rank and file unit for the Dark Elves to show something a little more interesting.

27-08-2008, 12:01
They are cool look forward to seeing them in the flesh.

27-08-2008, 16:53
Nicw work on the bolt throwers Catferret. I seriously san't wait to see an entire army of dark elves you've painted. Keep up the great work.

27-08-2008, 17:00
Cheers guys. Encouragement is always appreciated.

Not done much painting today but did get some of the armour done on the Warjack. Think I'll go build some Corsairs now.

28-08-2008, 02:21
I like the dark elves, but they just look so...dark. I know they are supposed to, and they look good, but maybe if you paint a colour around the edge of the base it will help. I don't know if you are planning on leaving it how it is, or what, but for some reason when I see black on the edge of the base the miniature just doesn't look finished to me.

The scout squad looks amazing too by the way. Keep up the good work!

28-08-2008, 11:34
I like the dark elves, but they just look so...dark.

I think that's down to bad pictures. A dark colour scheme plus yellow light plus light background = almost nothing to see except black and white yellow.

28-08-2008, 13:38
I said it while you were painting these, but: 'be bold with your highlights, young Catferret' (I may be paraphrasing here). Check out 'eavy Metal or Golden Demon models closely and you'll see a lot of their highlighting is bold to the point of ridiculous. But then if it fools the eye...

29-08-2008, 10:20
Iz in yoor housez ignorin yoor Meekanz!

Fine. I'll throw some more blue on them some time. ;)

29-08-2008, 12:35
lolcat for da winz!

29-08-2008, 23:44
Fine. I'll throw some more blue on them some time. ;)

It still getz Win for teh month of Tale.

30-08-2008, 06:34
He is right about the highlights but I can't bring myself to do it.
I know they will look better at a distance but I like them to look realistic not ridiculous and I look at them close up.
It's a tough choice.

However, sold first months painting for both Tales.
Love the 40K scheme ... very realistic. :D

30-08-2008, 09:14
Cheers Harry. Let's see if I can get next month's done. :D

31-08-2008, 12:47
Moar pics plz.

31-08-2008, 12:57
Moar pics plz.

Well, seeing as my current project is your model...

Still very much a work in progress. Details required on the power plant, the cloth/banner is only basecoated. Lots of other things.

31-08-2008, 13:08

'scuse me while I go change my trousers.......

03-09-2008, 22:35
Finished the Stormclad. Lee wanted to do the base himself so I haven't done anything to it.

Here are some pics.

The NMM on the banner looks nowhere near as good in real life unfortunately. I think the camera flash helped a lot.

03-09-2008, 23:30
I can't believe you've actually painted where the handle on the back would scrape the plate it's attached to.:wtf:

Nice work.

04-09-2008, 07:05
I can't believe you've actually painted where the handle on the back would scrape the plate it's attached to.:wtf:

It's something us mortals sometimes forget...

I'd have gone for more yellow/gold detailing on the model, but having seen it in the flesh (?!?) I like the 'darker than though' approach as it breaks from the published Cygnar 'pretty boys' look. Makes them look like they'll give you a good doing over on - or off - the field of battle!

Palatine Katinka
04-09-2008, 08:28
The banner's looking nifty!

05-09-2008, 16:54
Month 2 of the Tales of Painters sees me working on a 10 man Tactical squad for 40k and Corsairs for Fantasy.

I'm going to try and get the marines done first. Here are some WiP pics.

That's him had the Tin Bitz drybrush, Boltgun Metal Drybrush and Charadon Granite basecoat done.

Here's the whole squad. Barring the Sergeant they are all just drybrushed metal just now.

Maybe an update later on depending if I get a chance to do any more painting this evening.

05-09-2008, 16:59
They look good as a start Catferret, the sarge looks very mean with his Mk VIII and his power fist. Is that the old power fist or one from the command squad?

05-09-2008, 17:01
Command sprue fist. The fingers/claws are pointier.

06-09-2008, 02:16
So thats where all those torsos are going...

06-09-2008, 08:31
I didn't realise you started with the metal. I just thought you added that after. Looks good.

06-09-2008, 11:10
So thats where all those torsos are going...

Yeah. All your MkVIII are belong to us! Got another two Tactical squads and a Veteran squad after this one. I also have enough spare torsoes to do a 5th squad in the future if I feel so inclined.

I didn't realise you started with the metal. I just thought you added that after. Looks good.

Nah. I do things weird. I prefer the effect you get doing it in this order.

07-09-2008, 16:02
Finally I find time to reply to your thread. So.....

Nice looking stuff, Sire! Can't comment much on the SM tactical squad yet, all i can do is seconding Shadowphract's opinion about the Sergeant: He really looks mean.

Make sure you give the blue on the warmachine thing another overhaul. It looks a little patchy at the moment (depending how how much the customer pays of course).

Seeya soon, keep up yer work!

07-09-2008, 16:14
Well, it was meant to look patchy and ill maintained...

It's also in Lee's hands now so there ain't much I can do. :p

I shall be going away for a week so no update on the marines but I will take some pics later of another random project I've been working on. Watch this space!

08-09-2008, 01:53
Well, I don't think anybody noticed but I promised some pics so here they are.

Norse Jarl for Mordheim. Heavily converted from Marauder, Chaos Warrior and Empire Militia plastics. Plus loads of GS for the chainmail, belts, pouches and furs. The pre-paint pics can be found here (http://s137.photobucket.com/albums/q224/catferret/?action=view&current=NorseWIP001.jpg), here (http://s137.photobucket.com/albums/q224/catferret/?action=view&current=NorseWIP002.jpg), and here (http://s137.photobucket.com/albums/q224/catferret/?action=view&current=NorseWIP003.jpg).

Here's the model all painted up. I seem to have lost my ability to paint neatly of late. My hands shake a lot more than they used to. Oh well. Better than nothing.

08-09-2008, 08:48
Loved this model when you were buildign him and the love stays strong seeing him again :)

08-09-2008, 17:55
That's much better than nothing, it's great! Are you doing more for the warband? I would love to see a whole regiment of guys like that.

08-09-2008, 20:07
Thanks guys. :)

Arduhn: The warband will be getting an overhaul from Norse (Lustria) to Marauders (Border Town Burning (http://bordertownburning.de.vu/)) so I shall be rebuilding the band from scratch. It's going to be a long slow project but check back every so often for new models.

It's a good excuse to sculpt chainmail which is something I really enjoy doing.

08-09-2008, 20:22
Starting the call for GW to redo the marauders to look like that! ;)

Mightly impressive work Catferret; the conversion is lovely and I don;t see what you're doing on about with the painting; the freehand on the sheath is lovely.

Count Sinister
08-09-2008, 23:41
Catferret, that's an excellent model! Brilliant conversion, and I like the paint job. Doesn't look untidy to me, just dark, and with some nice natural tones. And the greenstuff work is fantastic. Looking forward to seeing more of these guys!

09-09-2008, 07:10
It's a good excuse to sculpt chainmail which is something I really enjoy doing.

Knit one, purl one...

09-09-2008, 08:00
Thanks guys.

Arhalien: Sadly, it looks like the Marauders are moving even further from Viking imagery now. They look more like less armoured warriors judging by the forthcoming horsemen models.

Count S: It'll be a while I'm afraid. The Tales of Painters are keeping my "other project" time to a minimum. Plus it's a struggle to find people to play Mordheim.

On a general note, there won't be any more updates from me until early next week as I'm away visiting family until Friday. I'm also going out drinking at the weekend with a short redhead (:D)so painting time will be limited. I'll have to put in a concerted effort next week to catch up.

09-09-2008, 09:01
Loving the norseman mate, very nicely done. Particularly the metals.

Keep up the good work. :)

*shuffles off to paint more marines* :cries:

29-09-2008, 23:51
Well, it's been a while as various things got in the way. But normal service shall hopefully resume soon.

As a taster, here are some new WiP pics of the Tactical Squad. It's mainly detail work to do now although some areas like the pouches and whatnot need highlighting.

Although some of the marines in the army will be bareheaded, everybody has a helmet on them somewhere. If not being worn, then it'll be in a hand or clipped to their waist.

30-09-2008, 06:07
Lol. Loving the Mk VIII mate, it works really well with your paint scheme. Well done!

30-09-2008, 20:05
Marines are looking good mate, but I gotta say the metallic on the Jarl's axe in the previous update is excellent!

Count Sinister
30-09-2008, 21:14
I don't mind waiting for more Mordheim models, Catferret - they're always worth it.

Oh, and I hope you had a good week. Hope drinking with the small redhead went well!

01-10-2008, 05:34
Hivey: Ta. Spent ages building it up with strategically placed Badab Black. None of that all-over wash nonsense,

Count: I have decided to redo the rest of the warband to bring them in to line with the Jarl. Full chainmail and furs for all! :D

Sadly, the short redhead injured herself at work so couldn't drive across to this side of Scotland. :(
She's all better now and hopefully is coming through this weekend. :)

Today may well be my last day of work before my contract ends. I haven't found a new job yet so I may have a lot of free time for painting. Guess there's always something positive.

Count Sinister
02-10-2008, 02:23
Well, sorry to hear that the short redhead didn't make it last weekend, but enjoy the weekend when she does!

As for the warband - sounds nice. I was looking through the Border Town Burning supplement[s], and was very interested in the revised 'Norse' warband (almost entirely because of conversion possibilities, I might add!). I'll be looking forward to your reworked warband with interest, because if they're even a patch on that first model, they are going to be brilliant.

02-10-2008, 09:09
Yeah, Border Town Burning has got me thinking about the warband. I'm thinking a Condemned in the style of one of the Marauders in W:AR may be in order.

Now, question is do I stick with them being Norse and reduce the chances of getting turned into a spawn or being noticed by my chosen God; or do I make them Kurgan so I can still use the Huntsman models I made (Kurgan get bows)?

Count Sinister
03-10-2008, 02:54
Wow, good question. Let me look through the warband rules again, and see. Bows are always handy, though, it has to be said - although this does depend, in part, on the amount of terrain that your group uses. I've always been an advocate of 'as much terrain as possible', although this does, of course, cut down on lines of fire. Still, if you already have models for Huntsmen, it sounds like a winner to me!

03-10-2008, 08:33
Hey catferret! Love the norse conversion! He rocks! Very impressed with your conversion work there mate[and of course the painting is top notch as always]. I Always loved the norse before GW turned them into chaos bondage boys. Looking forward to seeing you do more of those fellas when you get the chance[you have to do them for the sheer coolness factor]. Marines look splendid- very gritty- how are the corsairs coming on for the fantasy TOP?
Keep it up mate[and good luck with the redhead! ;) ]

03-10-2008, 11:00
Sorry Stu, I PM'd Harry a few days back asking to be removed from the ToFP. I have a few issues that have necessitated leaving it.

I should be posting a completed Marine pic later on today, just glowy scopes left to be done now.

03-10-2008, 14:13
Well, I just finished the Tactical Squad barring squad/chapter badges. I still have to find a way to simplify the design.

Here are a couple of bad pics. Lighting is terrible as usual.

03-10-2008, 15:19
I have to say, beofre I get on my way, that that plasma cannon is fantastic. I love the charging look that its got, well done Catferret! you do realise, once you finish your marines, I'll be expecting a game :D

03-10-2008, 15:20
You only have a year or so to wait then... ;)

03-10-2008, 15:27
You only have a year or so to wait then... ;)

Yeah, I suppose :) But theres always your first company models ..... and your guard (unless you've sold them)

03-10-2008, 15:40
Not sold the Guard yet although I'm still considering it.

03-10-2008, 15:42
Not sold the Guard yet although I'm still considering it.

PM sent :D

03-10-2008, 16:14
Good-looking stuff there again, senor catferret. Your scheme really works out. What are those blue, cape-like things on the backs/shoulders of some of your Marines made of?

About those chapter markings....why don't you just use the markings according to codex astartes? Might be the easiest way to do it.

SP: Replied.

Sigur: The blue cloth thingies are green stuff. I left it to dry too long before placing it on though. Lessons have been learned and hopefully I'll make a better job of the next lot.

The chapter badge is very complicated to do on each shoulder so I'm simplifying it.

It looks like this normally, but with some colour.

The Squad Markings will be pretty much Codex standard.

03-10-2008, 19:07
Looking good. I really like the green glowy source lighting on the plasma weapons and the lens-thingies on the helmets.

03-10-2008, 19:19
Ta. Hopefully by the end of this army I'll have had enough practice to do a better job. It's all a learning experience.

03-10-2008, 20:02
Lighting is terrible as usual.

Well, this is Scotland ;)

03-10-2008, 20:46
Ta. Hopefully by the end of this army I'll have had enough practice to do a better job. It's all a learning experience.

That it is, but when it's done well it looks bloody marvellous. And it's far better than my ham-fisted attempts at source lighting on my Warmachine warjacks.

03-10-2008, 20:48
oooooooooooh, shiny shiny plasma. Nice to see the sgt wasn't the one who forgot his helmet for once.

That chapter symbol n the mark VIII smacks of mechanicumness. Gonna veer away from the blue n silver in favor of some red?

03-10-2008, 21:04
Haukr: It's because you can't motivate yourself to paint such awful models! ;)

Leo: Bare head guy has a helmet clipped at his waist. It's visible on the back of the model, as evidenced by this WiP pic.

03-10-2008, 22:12
Sorry Stu, I PM'd Harry a few days back asking to be removed from the ToFP. I have a few issues that have necessitated leaving it.

I should be posting a completed Marine pic later on today, just glowy scopes left to be done now.

Sorry to hear that mate- you'll be missed! Still the marines look awesome and I'll be looking forward to more additions to your warband as well as what ever other goodies you choose to share.

03-10-2008, 22:14
I'll still be painting Dark Elves occasionally, so check back if you wnat to see them. :D

03-10-2008, 22:17
Will do- planning on keeping my eye on your stuff- don't worry!

03-10-2008, 22:21
I've got a Malus Darkblade on foot to paint and Hastings would kill me if I don't do it justice. I may have time to do it this month actually.

03-10-2008, 22:50
I'm really liking the green glowy plasma you've got there.

03-10-2008, 23:01

Rumour has it you are going to paint something next week. It's about time mister! :p

04-10-2008, 11:30
Great looking marines there as always. You going to be redoing the shiny termies this way?

04-10-2008, 14:56
Nah, shiny Termies will stay shiny. The excuse is they are Deathwing so are entitled to a different colour. ;)

04-10-2008, 15:51
Love your Marines Catferret, the dark and battle-worn look really suits the models in my opinion. Your scheme is not a million miles from the ones I was planning to do when considering a marine army.

The OSL on the plasma weapons is also ace, this is a technique I have yet to really try but rest assured when I do your marines will be a source of inspiration.

04-10-2008, 16:17
Cheers Spikedog. I just read a few tutorials on it a while back, then forgot what to do and fudged it all. I've found green to be the easiest. Scorpion Green really adds a luminescence to it.

1. Paint the area Dark Angels Green, with a wash of the same in the surrounding area where you want the "glow"
2. Snot Green over most of the glowing part and a little in the washed areas
3. 50/50 Snot/Scorpion Green applied as before but leaving a small amount of the Snot area visible. Also pick out any hard edges which would catch the light with this mix
4. Scorpion Green. Centre of glow and centre of edge highlights.
5. 50/50 Scorpion/Skull White. Final stage to really make it glow.

OK, I suck at tutorials. Sue me. :D

07-10-2008, 14:35
Time for another WiP update.

Tired of infantry so am breaking up the squads with a tank. Predator Annihilator this month. It puts me few points under in the To40kP but it'll balance out the month after.

I've finished basecoating the armour, next up will be highlights and whatnot.

A couple more pics to follow...

07-10-2008, 14:36

That's all for just now. Working the next couple of days, but I shall do some more on Friday.

07-10-2008, 15:25
Hi, that looks good! I hate painting tanks!

07-10-2008, 15:29
Ta matey. I am beginning to hate doing them in this style. It takes ages. Hopefully the next few stages will be faster and improve the appearance a bit.

08-10-2008, 06:55
Really good start on the predator - it's looking sex-ay. It'll be well complimented by the iconography as you can happily display the full Chapter badge. (Just lay off the whisky the night before!)

Is it worth a slight compromise with your painting style? Still start with the Tin Bitz/Boltgun Metal, but only apply it around the edges, not the whole kahuna. Should save you a substantial amount of time, no? Friday is Stormtrooper Day if you're still interested...

08-10-2008, 18:47
I tried the scheme straight over black and it looked very different. So no saving time for me. :cries:

Tomorrow shall also be Stormtrooper Day. After I get an application in for a job.

13-10-2008, 08:11
Time for another update. Was working on the Predator over night and got most of it finished barring Chapter iconography, etc. That will be done on the turret I reckon.

This morning I dug out a Tamiya weathering kit and decide to play. I bought it ages ago for a different project but hadn't used it. The instructions were fairly simple so I just got stuck in and made it nice and sandy looking.

Here are the pics.

Still have to finish dirtying up the exhausts and vents.

13-10-2008, 09:52
mmmm sandy goodness

13-10-2008, 15:49

Mmmm...very nice Catferret. Just out of interest, how did you use the Weathering kit? I like the way i do it, but no-one else seems to do it like that.

mmmm sandy goodness

What? I don't want to know the girls you meet. Just....ewwwwwww.

13-10-2008, 19:36
Very nice Pred you have there VGCat!

I like your weathering effects, and in fact I may have to hit you up for a few tips soon when I get back to my tanks as I don't seem to be able to get it to work right.

Do you plan to paint the lights on this one or are they staying off ;)

13-10-2008, 20:58
Those are some really nice marines you got there, and don't often like marines... well, except there lootable gear. :D

The blue on the predators lascannon sponsons could use a little more weathering, but I'm an ork player so it may not be needed.

13-10-2008, 22:14
Konrad: Ta.

Shadowphrakt: I think I'll do a quick guide when I do the next tank to explain it to folk.

Spikedog: Lights are staying switched off for the moment. Not really sure how to deal with them yet. Plenty time to get that worked out before the next To40kP submission. I'll also try to write some sort of tutorial for the weathering. It won't be expert level by any means as this is the first time I've used the stuff.

Malenky: The pics were taken before I'd weathered the sponsons. They are now suitably dusty like the rest of the tank.

Oh, if I'm going to do some soert of weathering guide, do people just want the part about the application of dirt? Or do you want the distressed paintjob as well?

Insane Psychopath
22-10-2008, 18:01
Tim your Space Marines look very cool so far :D How many Mk8 armour are you useing in this force???

Can we have a photo of the units you done so far???

22-10-2008, 18:57
Cheers mate.

Final count will be 39 MkVIII armoured Marines and 10 Scouts. Plus a bunch of tanks.

A group shot of completed models will appear once I get the final touches done on the Predator.

I may even take a picture of the other stuff just for my own reference.

23-10-2008, 15:57
That pred is looking sweet, just like the rest of the army. Wish I could paint a tank that well or paint tanks full stop:D:cries:

06-11-2008, 18:12
Updates! Fallout 3 has eaten into my time of late but today I did some sculpting on another of my Mordheim Norse models. Haven't used GS for a few months now so I was a little rusty but it'll be fine I'm sure.

This guy is a Condemned in the Marauder warband. Some guy constantly mutating as two gods fight over his soul. I decided to keep the mutation fairly minimal and make a model inspired by the Marauders from Warhammer Online.

Enough waffling, here's a few pics.

Still got to add some scales and spikes to the mutie arm; plus finish off his boots and add some furs. Probably fix up the chainmail on the back that got squashed while I transported him home.

Death Korp
06-11-2008, 18:48
He looks awsome, In fact, i'll have to steal the idea from you when i make my own Marauders...

06-11-2008, 19:04
Wow, I was thinking of doing something like this for my unit of Forsaken. Also how did you sculpt the muscle?

06-11-2008, 19:19
Really sweet work Catferret. I'm gonna do this for my marauders(my WOC army is paiscally the Warhammer online WOC), but they probably won't be as good as that is. By the where did you get the right claw thing from? I know I've seen it but I can't remember were.

06-11-2008, 19:46

I like that a lot Catferret - its a great conversion. It looks as if your greenstuff skills haven't deceased any - I looked through your old thread.

07-11-2008, 06:35
Death Korp: Steal away, I stole the idea from Warhammer Online artwork. :D

Penguin: I cheated. ;) It's sculpted over a normal Marauder arm. I wanted some more bulk before I added scales and stuff to really make the mutation obvious.

Dino: Claw is from the Daemonettes.

Trixxy: I'm guessing Duffy linked you to the old log? I thought it was long dead and buried.

07-11-2008, 10:31
Love that marauder. Great job reproducing that artwork also - as soon as I saw the pic I immediately thought of that.

07-11-2008, 12:17
Like the marauder, mate. What did you use to do the chain mail "pattern" (for want of a better word)?

07-11-2008, 13:00
Penguin: I cheated. ;) It's sculpted over a normal Marauder arm. I wanted some more bulk before I added scales and stuff to really make the mutation obvious.

I'm shocked by you Catferret, I thought you knew better than to cheat:p

07-11-2008, 13:41
ssorck: Yay! That's good that the model is recognisable. The artwork is great. I'm basing another model off some of the other concept pieces on the site. It may have to be a full sculpt from scratch. Not done one of them for a while.

Haukr: Sharpened cocktail stick and judicious poking of greenstuff. :D

Penguin: Cheating is fine if it gets the desired results. ;)

07-11-2008, 18:35
Trixxy: I'm guessing Duffy linked you to the old log? I thought it was long dead and buried.
Yeah - well - I linked through your profile - I checked other stuff you'd done - was looking for inspiration... and was decidedly worried by the lack of inspiration in the cigar box under my parents bed.....lol.

10-11-2008, 18:25
Minor update. Did the scales and finished the boots on the Condemned.

Just the furs round his shoulders to do now.

In other news, I received the Avatars of War Dwarf Thunderlord in the post today. He's now built and ready for paint. Awesome model, just had to have one. :D

10-11-2008, 18:59
Great sculpting here, guess those chaos warriors are gonna come in handy!

Looking forward to seeing that condemned painted!

10-11-2008, 19:11
Excellent sculpting mate - all very smoothly done. It'll be seamless when he's painted, I'm sure. Something I look forward to seeing.

10-11-2008, 20:04
I have to agree with Mcmullet - excellent sculpting.

10-11-2008, 22:52
I see that, your Fallout 3 headache isn't terminal.

Nice work BTW. Loving the mutie.

14-11-2008, 19:03
Aha! So much I've missed:

Catferret, it all looks great. I love the scaly effect on the marauder dude. Your GS skills are brilliant. Have you ever sculpted a whole model? that should be your next project :D

14-11-2008, 22:21
Cheers. I started a scratch sculpt a while back. Never quite finished him though. I'll dig him out sometime and get the final bits done. It was arms and minor parts of clothing that needed finishing.

Pics of what I've done are available here (http://s137.photobucket.com/albums/q224/catferret/Old%20West/).

18-11-2008, 22:56
Time for a small update. Got some work done on another member of the Mordheim warband. This guy is a champion with a bit of an executioner vibe going on. Still have to add sleeves, belts, furs and shoulder pads but the armour is done and out of the way now.

Only trouble is, between thses guys and Fallout 3, I have done nothing on my Marines for the Tale of Painters. Oops. Still some time left though. Maybe I'll not procrastinate and get a squad painted in time?

Lost Egg
19-11-2008, 08:56
Ooo he looks promising though a little oddly proportioned. I guess part of that is down to GW and that hes not done yet. If your condemed is anything to go by he will rock!

19-11-2008, 16:23
Hairy: Proportions are all GW's fault. :p

Under all that GS he's just a regular plastic Marauder. The only thing different is the helmet that comes from a Warrior. It was a little big but hopefully adding the furs to his shoulders will fix that.

20-11-2008, 08:15
Prod. Prod! PROD!

Damn prodding stick doesn't seem to be working... Get down here and either bring your Marine stuff or paint Orks. Hmm: CAJOLE!

20-11-2008, 08:41
But it's cold out. And my bad leg doesn't like long walks in the cold. :p

20-11-2008, 19:06
Gotta agree with the complaint about GW proportions, legs are always way too short and make everything look squat and stocky. You should try adding a little spacer in at the calves, makes a world of difference.

Whats planned next for the group?

20-11-2008, 20:10
Once this guy is done, I think it'll be another Champion. Probably with a steel whip, although I'm stuck for pose ideas. I was originally planning to have him standing with the whip coiled in one hand and pointing with the other arm. Problem is, it'd be another fairly static model.

I could always use a different weapon but the whip could be fun. Handy for improving the chaos hounds in the warband as well.

20-11-2008, 21:01
Lovely Chaos fellas. Very characterful. Very nicely done.

21-11-2008, 04:20
Cheers Harry. Hopefully I'll have an update on the Champion in a few hours. I'm working on belts and stuff just now.

Quick question: How do people think he'd look with a cloak? I'm undecided at the moment. Thing is, I'd have to add it before the furs so could do with deciding soon.

21-11-2008, 13:48
It's a tough call, but I'd say yes for the cloak. Especially given the huge expanse of metal that would show (i.e., the mail) when he's painted up. A cloak would also suit the executioner look I think.

Great sculpting all round on that mini so far. Mordheim rocks! Haven't played it for about 4 years when we had a short Empire in Flames campaign. It was always good fun though.

21-11-2008, 18:29
McMullet: The cloak will be happening at some point tonight. A few people have given the same argument as you for having it so it would appear I don't have a choice anymore. :p

Now I just have to learn to sculpt cloaks... Pics may be forthcoming later.

22-11-2008, 00:52
Well, we have an update! Champion is nearly finished now. Just have to decide if he's getting furs after all. I'm kinda liking the cloak at the moment, bar tidying up the neck/shoulder area. What do folk think?

Also not decided whether he will be getting sleeves. I may just leave the arms/shoulders bare. Gives him more movement for axe swinging.

22-11-2008, 01:41
Hey, these are very cool. Does this mean I also have to get out that old GS and try sculpting something so I don't fall behind too much? :p

Anyhoo, I really like both these guys, especially the mutated one. As for proportions; well, this is what we go for when dealing with GW miniatures I guess.

The new guy is very good as well. The only thing I could remotely find odd is the cloak which folds a bit unrealistically on his back (note that I have no idea of arrangement of folds whatsoever). Apart from that, top notch work there, Catferret.

22-11-2008, 01:46
Yeah, it didn't help that the carefully shaped bit of GS decided to fold over on itself just as I was putting it in place and wouldn't separate without being damaged. I just decided to wing it and see how it would turn out.

It's all a learning experience really. I haven't done much with cloaks before.

And yes, you have to start playing with GS again. :p

24-11-2008, 06:00
Bases are complete for the Norse that I have made so far. Although it doesn't show well in the pics, the black areas have some PVA glue to give the appearance of mud/water in the puddles and gutter.

And here are the heroes standing proudly atop the bases. They aren't glued in place yet, just pins holding them up just now.

Painting will commence soon!

24-11-2008, 08:18
Loving the marauders mate! Really good greenstuffing skills there my man- very impressive- as Sigur says - I'll have to get my greenstuff out to keep up[black knight conversions are begging at the moment]. My favourate touches are the belts, pouches and the wraps on the axe handle.
Love the pavement bases too. Looking forward to seeing them painted up- the fella in the middle is a great start. :)

24-11-2008, 08:29
Cheers Stu. I'm intrigued to see what you do for your Black Knights. Get them started! ;)

24-11-2008, 09:10
Great greenstuff work, I love the last Marauder with mutated talon especially. Is he by any chance inspired by that Warhammer Online trailer? I seem to remember a Chaos warrior with a similar 'gift' fighting an Elf or something.

24-11-2008, 09:35
Hivey: Yeah, I drew a lot of inspiration from the Warhammer Online concept art and downloadable wallpapers.

At some point I'll have a job again and be able to buy the game and pay the monthly fee. In the meantime, I'm going to make my own marauders and play tabletop stuff instead of computer stuff. :p

Well, assuming you ignore my Fallout fixation...

Lost Egg
24-11-2008, 10:04
Am liking the new bases there Catferret, very nice!

25-11-2008, 09:49
At some point I'll have a job again and be able to buy the game and pay the monthly fee.

Well, if you can get your **** down here and finish these Orks... That would, er, be rather helpful.

25-11-2008, 10:21
Suppose I could do some orks tomorrow. Damn greenskins.

25-11-2008, 11:11
Haven't commented here for a while, and I;ve missed some very good stuff. The greenstuffing on those marauders is quite simply awesome; well done and very characterful.
Looking forward to seeing some paint on these.

Oh, and apologies if youve mentioned this before (you expect me to read the thread?!), but are these for a chaos army or a Mordheim warband?

25-11-2008, 13:41
Arhalien: They are for Mordheim. I'd love to add chainmail to all the Marauders in a Chaos army but it would drive me (more) insane given my predilection for Marauder heavy armies.

Having said that, I'd only have to do the front rank or two of each unit. I'm pretty sure Viking Huscarls all positioned themselves at the front as they had more armour and carried large shields. My history knowledge is sketchy at best though.

On another note, the bases are painted, the Chieftain has been rebased, and the Condemned and Champion have started getting some paint daubed on. Basecoats on skin, metal and leather so far. I'll do some more later and take pics.

25-11-2008, 22:00
Cool stuff mate. I think the cloak could maybe use a second layer just to define the folds more and neaten up the area around the neck. Looking forward to the painted pics. Lovely bases too by the way!

26-11-2008, 07:57
Well, now that Warseer has decided it wants to work again, here is an update.

Chieftain has been rebased and is now finished. Although I'm still toying with demoting him to Champion and making a new bigger bad-@$$ier Chieftain.

Applied some basecoats to the Champion and some highlights to his cloak. Needs a bit of tidying up yet.

More to follow.

26-11-2008, 07:58
Finally, here is the Condemned in his painting-in-progress state.

Lost Egg
26-11-2008, 08:06
Ooo that Condemed is looking very cool. The scales and claw look very sickly...what colours did you use?

26-11-2008, 08:09
Hairy: Thanks. The claw started with a base of 50/50 Scorched Brown/Scaly Green. The various layers were built up by adding more Scaly Green. The edges were highlighted by adding Bleached Bone to Scaly Green.

The area where the skin meets the claw/scales was given a number of washes of very dilute Scaly Green.

26-11-2008, 09:00
Looking good mate- I too really like the claw on the condemned -very strong scheme- I'm now trying to figure out where I'd use that scheme if I nicked it! looks great mate- looking forward to seeing him finished.

26-11-2008, 11:30
Liking it very much. Especially the condemned. Great work mate.

28-11-2008, 10:58
those marauders look ace and i for one would like to see you build and paint a bigger bad-@$$ier Chieftain. :D

28-11-2008, 14:31
Looking good so far mate, are you taking your lead for colour scheme from the warhammer online artwork?

Whats next on the cards for the group?

Lord Azoth
29-11-2008, 01:09
like a lot the mix between scales and flesh..really well done

29-11-2008, 07:09
Thanks guys. Always a nice surprise to log back in and find posts on the thread. :D

Dante: Actually, I paint pretty much all my models blue and silver, I've been doing it for years. My marines are a bit of a departure from that, but still have those\2 colours in places so I don't feel too bad about it. ;)

Insane Psychopath
01-12-2008, 02:03
Tim those Marauder look cool!!!!!!! :D Your green stuff skill ace (wish I could sculpt :( ) & painting really cool.

If your making any more I'd suggest you bought the Marauder Horsemen box set, there so many bits from tons of head from cool helmets, sheild, etc....

Also is there rules for Marauder in City of the damned or are you doing "count as"??? not played City of the Damned since it came out, really great game (but BFG No1 ;) follow by 40k)

01-12-2008, 03:02
Wow Catferret, your greenstuff skills are excellent, that champion looks super. Also I love the blue hue you put on the skin around the mutation, I bet he is going to look fantastic when finished.

01-12-2008, 03:35
IP: Cheers Jamie. Marauders are in the Border Town Burning expansion. It's a fan-made work, but very well written. It's available from here (http://www.bordertownburning.de.vu/).

Spikedog: Thanks. I'll need to do some more work on him soon. I've been distracted by other things.

06-12-2008, 07:01
Remember those Marines I was doing for the Tale of 40k Painters? Well I didn't!

Here is a last minute submission I painted over the last couple of days so I didn't have to play a joker. It's not quite finished, it needs some morre washes and the lights and vision lense thingies need finishing.

Continued in next post.

06-12-2008, 07:04

This is the "Mariposa". Stole the name from the Fallout games. It was the name of the military installation where the founding members of the Brotherhood of Steel were stationed if my memory serves correctly.

This month I need to stop procrastinating and do the GS work on my tactical marines so I can get some more infantry painted up.

06-12-2008, 09:53
The Mordheim stuff looks good boss. Nice painting and the basing is just the ticket. You got away with the folded cloak business I think. ;) Will you add some weathering to them though? I always think Mordheim models should be dirty as hell, unless they're Marienburgers or Elves.

Good job getting the LR done (ish :p) - it looks good so far and will be great with the lenses done (and maybe a few more insignia, though I guess excessive decoratin doesn't fit with the style of these guys).

11-12-2008, 23:59
The Mortheim Possessed looks great so far; I also like the effect of the skin having turned blue around the mutated parts.

Nice work on finishing the Land Raider within such a short time too. Some more chapter markings (preferrably in bright, flashy red ;) ) and it's perfect. Maybe I should have a shot at these wethering powders too once I get time to do another army. With more guns and tanks and all that. ;)

Anyway, good job there mate, wanna see more Mortheim stuff!

12-12-2008, 06:42
I haven't touched the Mordheim stuff since the last pictures. I got sidetracked by random stuff including, but not limited to, the Landraider and Hasslefree's Frank Cisco. I even resculpted parts of Frank. Sadly, his colour scheme was inspired by the Man from Del Monte so is damn near impossible to photograph. Darned white suit...

I may do some work on the Mordheim guys today. Maybe.

18-12-2008, 16:13
Update on the Mordheim stuff.

Condemned is finished I think.

More to follow.

18-12-2008, 16:14
Champion is almost finished. Just needs dirt on the base of the cloak and maybe tattoos on the left arm.

18-12-2008, 16:31
Those are some awfully sweet conversions, made even better with a relay nice paint job.
The things i like the best (as far as the paint job is concerned) is probably the Condemneds flesh around the scales
and the skin tone of the severed head the Champion is holding. Excellent work!

19-12-2008, 01:53
Nice-o, neat-o.

I have to admit that I, like Malenky_malchick, really like this severed head. The colour of the skin is spot on. Now that it's fully painted, I seem to notice the base for the first time. It looks very good, haven't noticed the step thing before. Great stuff.

Blood on the axe looks good too. Are you going to add additional highlights on the cloak and the skin?

19-12-2008, 02:04
Thanks guys.

I wasn't sure about the skin. I only took it up to Dwarf Flesh so may take it up a bit more. Cloak wasn't going to get any highlights though. Just dirt and grime at the hem.

I am also pleased with the severed head. The skin tone came together without any planning. I just picked up random paints and chucked them on.

It's basically the same as my normal skin method but with Dheneb Stone added in during the lighter stages, with a final highlight of pure Dheneb. Then I washed a few points with very dilute Knarloc Green, Midnight Blue and purple ink.

I'm certainly going to have to keep that method in mind for if I ever do undead.

That condemned is really nice. Liking the transition between scales and skin, very nicely done. Keep at it. :)

They look great- the severed head is brilliant - love the skin tones!
Love the big claw and scales too- lovely work mate.

Thanks guys. It seems these Mordheim guys have proved popular. Certainly a lot more so than all those lame Marines. In fact, they are even appearing in the forthcoming Border Town Burning supplement. This is the closest I'm gonna get to fame so I'm making the most of it. :D

Now I just need a few more bits and pieces to make the rest of the warband.

In the mean time I have started converting a model for my next Dark Heresy character. A desert nomad with loads of kit and a modified autogun. Pics should be forthcoming over the weekend.

20-12-2008, 07:14
I really like your latest Catferret - these models look ace.

20-12-2008, 10:23
I can only agree with previous posters, I'm of a liking disposition of the Mordheim stuff, specially the condemned. Good work mate. And just so you don't scrap your paintage of Marines, they're ace as well. :D

Minor update tonight. I've had a lot on my plate recently and haven't been in the mood for models so I'm now a bit behind target with my 40k stuff and Mordheim warband.

So, without further ado, here is the first henchman for the Marauders. Spear and shield just for fun.

More to follow.

12-01-2009, 02:13
Here he is with his shield blutacked in place.

I know there is a moldline on the spear, it will be fixed when I fix the dodgy chainmail on his back. The lesson here is don't drink lots of coffee when sculpting or you put big lummoxy fingers on the finished bits...

12-01-2009, 12:25
Very nice stuff again. The fur looks great; I usually make the mistake of trying to make it too "detailed", i.e. trying to display single hairs which usually ends up terrible. I also really like how the chainshirt ends. Not in an even ending but somewhat damaged/unfinished-looking. Makes it look quite worn and rag-tag and fits great with chaos marauders. Good use of this plastic bit on the fur. Not only makes it more realistic but also ties it together with the rest of the GW bitz and making your sculpting stick out less.

There's only one thing that bothers me a bit about the guy; in the picture on the lower right in your first posting, the chainmail looks like it's somehow "growing over" the belt. Maybe you could fix it to look like it's actually coming from underneath the belt?

That's all. The guy looks great so far; he isn't the handler of the hounds you mentioned yesterday, is he?

edit: What the hell is that head on his shield? An Ungor's head?

12-01-2009, 12:32
Ta much. Yeah, the strap thingy needs to be sculpted over. I left it untouched so I'd have a guide line where to add it. I had to wait for the chainmail to dry first but then got carried away and added the fur and forgot about the strap...

No, he isn't the handler for the hounds. This is just a lowly henchman.

I think it's a human head on the shield. I only chose that shield because I had so much fun painting the last decapitated head...

12-01-2009, 12:38
Very nice work mate, I love the menacing pose. The chainmail looks great too. ;) I should try my hand at sculpting some too as I promised!

12-01-2009, 12:41
You did promise! I hate to think how many fairies have died due to your broken promises!

EDIT: In further news, the Border Town Burning (http://www.bordertownburning.de.vu/) supplement for Mordheim is out and my 3 finished Marauders are in the gallery section.

22-01-2009, 00:53
Small update.

Spearman now has a base.

Classic ogre as hired sword for the warband (if they can afford it).

I've managed to track down the complete unit of those guys so will get them all painted up for my Ogre army some time. This guy was duplicate so is getting Mordheim treatment.

Finally, a WiP pic or 2 of my Chaos Lord for WFB. Started him ages ago and have now gone back to him. Still a fair bit to do yet.

22-01-2009, 10:00
Like the Chaos Lord, mate. Love the pose. Not quite as tip toe as the original Archaon legs. Is that the new sculpting medium you're using on the robes?

Also like the 'actiony' pose on the spearman.

22-01-2009, 10:07
I really do like what you are doing with your chaos lord.

However might i be so bold as to suggest that the guy could potentially do with a belt around his waist just below his chest armour. This would show how the forces of gravity are not stoping his lovely and very dynamic cape from falling down, other than sheer will power and the forces of chaos :)

Otherwise great stuff :)

22-01-2009, 10:15
Haukr: Yeah, Procreate is good stuff. Great for bulk work.

Dimitrios: Belt was on the to do list once the chainmail has been added over the top of the robes.

22-01-2009, 12:35
Excellent bases on the Mordheim guys! It's making me nostalgic for when I first started playing MH, that was the first time I really started making an effort on bases and also the first time I finished an "army" (15 guys or something). Really looking forward to seeing them painted up.

The Lord looks interesting so far. I like the green stuff firey thing in his hand. Are the legs/cloak covering them done with ProCreate? Like you say, there's a lot of detailing left to do, but it looks promising so far. :)

22-01-2009, 17:50
Funnily enough, it was looking at your log that made me think I should make my bases more interesting...

Yeah, Procreate over wire for his lower half. The legs from Archaon on foot are too big strangely. Plus they are standing at a retarded angle.

Fiery thing needs more fiery bits, robes need filing down, chainmail needs adding... I have a lot of work to do.

23-01-2009, 15:57
Reworked the fireball a bit. Looks a little better but I still haven't got the hang of flames.

Added the chainmail over the robes. The back will mostly be covered by the cloak but I coverted the lot in case anything would be visible.

Next up will be thigh plates and a belt.

23-01-2009, 20:01
Very nice chainmail (and green stuff technique in general)...bet it'd look great once painted :)

24-01-2009, 16:56
Your Chaos Lord looks like it's of to great start. Where are those legs from?
And your Marauder Warband is really impressive and it would be a treat to play against. :D
It makes me want to start up with Mordheim of Necromunda again.

And how's it going with you space marines by the way?

24-01-2009, 18:34
Bomblu: Thanks. He'll get painted eventually...

Malenky: Cheers. The legs on the lord are completely sculpted from Procreate over a wire armature. You should definitely play Necromunda and Mordheim again. They are great fun.

The Marines are one month behind schedule so far. This month I have added the cloths to the shoulders on a tactical squad and undercoated them. I hope to get enough painted by the deadline for the Tale of 40k Painters that I do't have to play a 2nd Joker.

24-01-2009, 19:19
Excellent sculpting, I guess the the grey fooled me.

So when i start Mordheim or Necromunda i have you to blame?

25-01-2009, 04:38
So when i start Mordheim or Necromunda i have you to blame?

There'll be no time for blame because you'll be too busy having fun! :p

25-01-2009, 06:13
That guy is going to look fantastic painted. Great work with the green stuff.

25-01-2009, 13:16

Theres always time for blame:D

Lord looks awesome, especially the legs and chainmail.

03-02-2009, 21:19
Been working on the Shaman for my Mordheim band. I'll get the band finished eventually...

Once that stuff dries, I'll be adding an outer layer of robes, some furs and a hood. Plus some general tidying up. Staff is just blutacked in place just now to make adding the outer robes easier.

03-02-2009, 21:38
Ah, very nice. The head is perfect with the beard and those feathers. Also like how you added the typical flask on his belt. You did the belt by making a flat piece of putty, letting it cure for a while and then cutting out the belt and attaching it, right?

The pose is very good; the dude is more or less scratchbuilt, innit?

Folds on the mantle look good considering how thick the thing is. This and those boots really give the impression that he's from a tribe which is used to a cold climate.

How many more minis until your warband is done? I'm really looking forward to a group shot.

03-02-2009, 21:45
Brilliant stuff catferret- your conversion skills are really something special. Love the sound of more robes and furs. Any chance of a group shot of the posse so far?

03-02-2009, 21:51
Sigur: I'm afraid he isn't scratchbuilt. There's a Marauder under there somewhere. :p Yeah, heavy robes and furs to keep him warm. It gets cold in Norsca.

And I promise I'll do a group shot when this guy is finished being converted.

Am loving the Shaman Catferret, such a natural looking pose.

04-02-2009, 16:09
Excellent. Huge fur coat will be great. No get some paint out!!!

05-02-2009, 06:21
Thanks Hairy and Harry!

Well, the robes didn't work out too well on the shaman. I went off in a huff and then decided to stick with just a cloak for the outer layer. It's now curing away happily before I add some furs round the shoulders.

I'm now in two minds about giving him a hood. I may just forget that idea as I like painting heads. The counter argument is the hood would add an air of mystery and reduce some of the ferocity/power that the model has just now. Maybe more appropriate for a shaman. Thoughts required please!

Photobucket is currently undergoing maintenance, but once it's back up I'll take some new pics of the shaman, some of the hounds and then a group shot of the warband so far.

Nooo! I like the ferocity, sure he's a shaman but hes also Norse  A fur trim on the shoulders would be good though.

05-02-2009, 08:19

Ask and thou shalt receive!

Still needs some tidying up in places, like the earring and collar.

Group shot coming up.

05-02-2009, 08:21
Here's the shot of the warband so far.

The ogre won't be in it from the start, but he'll be the among the early purchases.

Still to do: 2nd Champion and a Marauder Henchman with throwing axes. Warband is nearly done with the building. :D

05-02-2009, 09:15
It looks like the Shaman is of to a good start. I like the head so i would not give him a hood. Maybe when your in the painting stage give him some shamanic Facial tattoos.

How's it going with your chaos lord?

05-02-2009, 09:47
@Catferret: When you first mentioned a hood I assumed it would have been down. The head looks terrific as-is and it's good to see you progressing with it in full view. Perhaps a natty trilby hanging from his belt in case it starts to rain? No? Oh well, worth asking...

05-02-2009, 13:01
Thanks for the group shot. That champion is looking truely impressive. Being the only one (apart from the shaman) without a helmet on makes him really stand out among the warband in which everyone wears these pot helmets.

The shaman looks much more impressive now. The coat and the fur part around his shoulders take much of the "comfy bathrobe" look (which would have been nice in a quirky way) away. The only thing I can critisize is the lower end of the fur parts on his back. It looks a bit unfinished.

The folds on the cloak is nice.

06-02-2009, 02:48
Malenky: Chaos Lord is in my pile of stuff to do again. I need to tidy up the waist a bit then I'll try and add some detailing to various parts.

Andy: Shamans (Shamen?) don't review video games so aren't allowed trilbies. Having said that, they are known to rant a lot... :D

Sigur: Yes, the furs didn't turn out as expected. I'm still getting to grips with what Procreate can be used for and it turns out that textured surfaces are best done with good old green stuff. The stretchy quality of GS actually helps textured areas like fur or chainmail. Oh well, I'll know for the next guy.

The shaman looks really cool Catferret with his new trim & I loved Malenky malchick's idea of facial tattoos. The group shot looks good too. Are you having Wulfen in your warband?

06-02-2009, 21:32
No Ulfwerenar in this warband as it uses the Norse part of the Marauder warband rather than the Norse Explorer warband that appeared in the Lustria and Border Town Burning supplements. It's more the northern Norse, so a little angrier. :D

07-02-2009, 00:38
Chaos Lord is nearly finished. Once the brown stuff dries I can file it smooth and add some detail to the groin plate.

Started detailing the sword. It will eventually get a gem in the centre of the Tzeentch icon and probably a ribbon around the grip just above the hand as a homage to Aekold's old Windblade.

07-02-2009, 00:45
Very niffty chaos lord so far. What else is gonna be added to him. Chains, feathers, fancy armour?

07-02-2009, 08:30
Looking great catferret- love the group shot- really think you should go for a full norse army ....
I think the shaman may be my fav mini so far and tattoos/warpaint on his heed would definitely look the business. The lord is looking suitably impressive- nice touch with the extra detailing on his sword.

07-02-2009, 08:45
Dino: Not sure what else to add. I'm kinda paranoid I'll go overboard.

Silverstu: Don't think I haven't been tempted to redo my Chaos army. It was Marauder heavy anyway so the composition wouldn't change much. Would just involve a lot of work adding furs and chainmail.
