View Full Version : Compotitions and Commissions log

30-08-2008, 00:33
Right, well here is the place where I, Lord Khaine, shall post up all the WIP and finished pictues of compotitions and commissions that i have entered and done, and i hope you enjoy seeing them develope as much as i enjoyed painting them.

first up, not that long ago everyone should remember the "national painting compotition". I entered a single model, a librarian, it was a good compotition and some very very good entries in my local store, i came in the top 3 for single minature, unfortunetly the winner of our local store single minature went on to be disqualified at the regional one, as his single minature happend to be to.......exactly lol

so without further ado, here is some final images of my librarian

i hope you like him, as i do

next in line is a commission that i am about to undertake. Being an imperial fists librarian this time for Shadowphrakt. I look forward to starting this as i hope he is too. I will hopefully be purchasing the model tomorrow....with hope if my local store has it stocked lol

thank you for your time, feed back is most welcome.

Good painting here - the middle picture almost has the sword glowing.

30-08-2008, 07:48
I've commented on your librarian before, but why was the winner disqualified from the competition? The miniature was too what?

31-08-2008, 19:14
the guy was disqualified because he entered a "single minature" which was infact two models, thats it really

31-08-2008, 20:22
With a topic name like that, who can resist checking it out?

You didn't disappoint.

02-09-2008, 17:40
well as i am currently awaiting arrival from mail order Shadowphrakt's librarian, i am also working on my games day entry

its a bit late, and i never really planned this out properly, its just me, casually painting a nice model, and entering it, to see how i do. but next year, even more skill, time and effort shall be put into it

i have only managed to get a "bad" picture of the model, and its still VERY WIP, just wanting to show you guys on how its going

let me know yeah? please and thank you :D

02-09-2008, 18:42
Yo, I'm interested in doing GD too, but am going to enter next years, but I know I'd appreciate an honest critique, so I'm going to do my best. IMO, some of your highlights are too "striking", particular of the face and beard. You need to show a deeper colour transition with more layers. Taking a look at the brow for instance, the area is almost exclusively you lightest colour but that colour should only be saved for the very tips and highest ridges. The same applies with the beard. As well as this, the highlighting on the armour plate on his thighs seem a little thick.

Other advice I could give you is try and incorporate some freehand and some conversion.

02-09-2008, 23:52
thank you nightsword i do apreciate that input, and looking again at the images i can see how there doesnt look like much, but i reasure you, the model is better in person, the images was caputred using a webcam, with bad lighting, so it kind of blended in all the layers.

As for the freehand, that is what im dreading attempting, as my skill with free hand isnt the best thing ever, but i guess i will attempt something simple

"Keep it simple, Keep it safe"

more input from others would be great :D

03-09-2008, 02:02
Wow the stuff in this log is really really great! Love the priest of Ulric even if it is WIP. Keep up the good work!

03-09-2008, 07:57
Gave this to Vicki the other day (you middlesborough lot are a tight group ain't ya?)... :

Look at post 3.

And I found this the other day:

Don't want to spoil the article for you, but the model on the first page was his practice attempt at freehand that became his entry in the end...

22-09-2008, 20:49
well, its time to start again

after i failed to get to Games Day

its time i worked on other stuff

so in the next few days we shall be seeing a commission and a compotition entry

the commission is Shadowphrakts librarian

and compotition is a local store one based on space marines

22-09-2008, 22:58
I've been wondering how the middlesborough crew got on at GD and it's such a shame to see you couldn't get there. You got pics of your entry?

22-09-2008, 23:00
my entry ended up being the librarian model just touched up and improved, i wouldnt of gotten very far at all

and from what i heard, none of us boro lot did, really bad year

but al be there next year, 100%!

22-09-2008, 23:41
Perhaps I'll see you there ;)

And you know, I like your librarian. Looking back at it, the red on the gun looks a little flat, but it's great none the less. It was a good job well done. Vicki was the other boro mini i commented on, so be interesting to see a) what models she choose and b)how they did.

PS: get a moveon with Sphrakts piece ;)

22-09-2008, 23:55
i only started 'phrakts piece tonight, but im off work tomorrow so i shall be doing it all day tomorrow

and 'Titan Wolfe' is another boro lad and his entry was incredible, search him up!

and yeah, the things been changed on the librarian was the plasma pistol, its now gold

23-09-2008, 00:17
Good call, his stuff is stunning. Thanks for that!

23-09-2008, 02:27
well ive finally managed to work out a decent camera!!!

so i thought, with it being nearly half 3 in the morning, i will show you a WIP shot of the librarian, picture not taken with a web cam, so colour are not pale and pasty

let me know what you think (especially you Shadow'!)

23-09-2008, 10:10
The skintone for me is near perfect, but I think the blue edges on the armour are too thick and you should make them thinner. Perhaps for contrast the eagle wanted to be a yellow-y gold, even NMM, just so it stands out from the pipes, but overall the effect is gooood. Nice work buddy.

Since you have a camera, any chance of a pic of your librarian?

23-09-2008, 11:51
why sure, no problem, i will put up the picture of my librarian right now nightsword

also an update picture of Shadow's librarian (librarian madness for me!!)

i will take into account the gold chest plate, but i tried steering away from gold incase it contrasts with the yellow, even though the rimms of the shoulder pads are going to be gold, so i might try it out, see what it looks like

as for the highlight on the blue, i happen to agree, i need to sort it out, note i work on the model in parts, so the upper half of him is more complete then the bottom, so i dont want to hear cries of how his legs dont look highlighted :p lol

anyway, here are the pictures

And for Nightsword

23-09-2008, 13:32
Both librarian's look the dog's b****cks. I recommended the gold for the the phrakt librarian more to complement the yellow, so it fits in with the Imperial Fist theme. The robes are really well done, but I don't think the legs are highlighted enough... ;)

And thanks for the pic, I like the weathered look of the gold, it's great. Good job with. My only tip would be to work on blending your a highlights a little more on the blue power armour.

Nice work buddy :)

23-09-2008, 13:46
cheers a bunch Nightsword, it really does mean something coming from you =]

ive gone with you idea for the gold, and the blue has been done better on shadow's libby

i will post another picture soon as i am still currently painting him, its surprising how much quicker you paint a model when you are really enjoying it lol

23-09-2008, 14:42
well, here it is again

yet ANOTHER update on this model, im starting to really like him

he is almost ready to get his arm glued on, and back pack, both which i have been painting seperatly, and then we shall see what he looks like and how i can improve on him :D

comments and critisism always wanted lol

23-09-2008, 15:30
Really like that. Looks fantastic. I think the yellow could use a light highlight on the edges now, but how could 'phrakt not be happy with that?

cheers a bunch Nightsword, it really does mean something coming from you =]

That is true. Partly why I dropped my skelies 'cuz it such a drag painting SO much bone lol. And I'm glad my opinion counts for something :D Cheers buddy, nice comment.

23-09-2008, 15:49
That looks awesome, very happy with how hes turnign out Lordkhaine!

I agree with nightsword about the yellow, if theres any chance it could be bit lighter on the eges?

Also, what colours were you thinking of for the staff? I was *fingers crossed) hoping for black, with the little force squiggles being white? If thats okay?

And sorry for not seeing the log earlier :D my bad. Wasn't checking General Logs enough.

23-09-2008, 16:19
well another update, glad you are all liking it and im glad to have some tips and feedback

(finally shadow lol)

here is a pic so far

i done this before reading the feedback, so yes the yellow shall go brighter

yes the skin can be paler :)

and the staff will go black and white shadow, tbh i wasnt liking it the way i started it, it looked better in my head

update later today most propberbly lol

23-09-2008, 22:42
Hooray for the left arm!

The gold on the trim looks sweet. Are you really going to make the skin paler?

23-09-2008, 22:50
only going to make it a little bit paler, shadow requested it in a message

but i dont know if he still would like it paler seeing newer pictures of it

and thanks, i like the gold, i also like the freehanded fist on his kneepad, but cant see it in pic, cant wait to start the writing in the book *cough* lol

24-09-2008, 16:18
Hmmm...actualy, thats pale enough. Just thinking, he cant really wear a helmet with all those cable coming out the back of his head, can he :D

25-09-2008, 01:32
update again, got majority of the model done now, i flew threw this, its a really nice model to paint!

all thats left is little details and touch ups (and any requests made by Shadow)

first 4 pictures shall be without flash (note its half 2 in the morning right now!)

and then i will post 4 with flash

so here we go!

25-09-2008, 06:19
Cool, that looks really nice. Could you..I dunno...wash the staff pole with Badab black ro something? It might just be the photo but it seems realyl fright and draws focus from the rest of the model, which is lovely :)

25-09-2008, 06:47
One fine librarian you have done there Khaine. Shall be keeping an eye on this one.

25-09-2008, 07:16

do you want me to dull down the skull white so its not taking all the attention THAT much?

do you like him so far shadow? anything else you would like to change?

25-09-2008, 16:44

Damn! Sorry, I meant the staff head, it just kind of jumps out, and I would like people to focus an the whole model.

Yes, of course I like it! It looks brilliant.

25-09-2008, 18:20
argh! lol i just badab blacked the staff today! ahhh, well i guess i can make it better and dull down the staff head lol

pics later

25-09-2008, 20:00
It's alright, the wash shouldn't do that much to the white other than shade it. Its looking really good. What colour are you doing the fist on the back?

I noticed that there's a tiny mistake on the back of the silver "vent" outpipe things, where the one of the opposite is neatly lined, but the other one on the opposite side is slightly clumpy. A little tidy up with a darker silver should sort that out :)

The blue effect on the staff head is cool! I think I'd have done it gold again though, just so it didn't stand out so much, but that would only be to keep the paintjob harmonious. I think the silver really emphasises the "power" aspect of the weapon, which is very fluffy ;)

I don't like the basing method :D

Nice work buddy.

25-09-2008, 20:17
i think your right again nightsword (wen bloody arnt you lol) gold it should be

25-09-2008, 22:58
I do like the silver :) I was just critised for the way I give comments, and told I should mention how I'd do it, and explain what I mean properly, but unless Phrakt wanted it, I wouldn't change it IMO. Just tone it down a little and see what that looks like and if still not happy, change it :)

Nice one ;)

02-10-2008, 19:25
Hey LordKhaine? Any updates? I can't wait to see this finished :D

12-10-2008, 22:01
hey all, sorry for lack of updates (specially to you Shadow') it appears i lost my internet completely and have had to move to a new supplyer (big up virgin media!) so im now back online, and i will show you the finished (maybe, if any changes need doing) libby soon!

13-10-2008, 01:03
oooooooooh yeah, its update time ladies and none ladies!

firt up, we have shadows librarian, which i hope he likes, because i do, and many other people do, apparently i do really good faces

let me know what you think people (especially you shadow!) any changes can be made as he is yet to be matt varnished and any close up and detail shots asked for may be given

and next up is a little side piece ive been working on since my internet went down, i finall got round to starting my harry the hammer, only i didnt want him to have a hammer as he is going to be a character in my up and coming khornate warhammer army, so he will be harry the blooletter(crusher) sword lol ive gone for a very vibrant red and gold colour scheme, just for something a little bit different from the dark dirty norsce look that chaos usually have, let me know yeah?

13-10-2008, 01:03
and because of only a 4 picture limit on posts, here is harry's shield (still need to finish that skull at the top! lol :p)

13-10-2008, 06:12
Yes! Awesome work Lordkhaine, I love that librarian. And Harry the hammer is looking pretty spiffy too, started mine aswell not that long ago :)

13-10-2008, 09:14
well shadow, is there anything more you want added to your librarian?

13-10-2008, 15:54
well shadow, is there anything more you want added to your librarian?

I don't think so mate! It looks awesome the way it is...maybe some shots from the back?

13-10-2008, 23:45
now that shadow is happy with his librarian and it is coming to a complete in the deal, i will soon be looking for more commission work

note i do paint other things then librarians lol, but if its a librarian you want, i would be more then happy to do so, and i do paint warhammer too

and more then one model, armies if given the oppertunity (and money too lol)

hope to get some questions and offeres soon

18-10-2008, 08:50
Hey Ben, that harry's looking sweet (mine's still just undercoated :D and I built it when it was released). Good to see that you are starting a decent warhammer army, the lure of chaos is just too strong. I'll have some pics of mine up soon, when I've finished building it all.

18-10-2008, 10:41
Damn right cool that there Libby.

I'm also another person that has Harry built and primed and have have only really basecoated the base aaaaand I can't the thigh plate which was separate from the model for some reason tsk.

20-10-2008, 21:31
well it seems that everyone is having a problem with starting harry, so i thought if i done mine, people might get inspired, and speakin of him, he is finally finished!! and here is some pictures of him to get you all happy!

20-10-2008, 22:23
Very nice Lord Khaine - I like the use of the Bloodletter sword :)

22-10-2008, 00:09
my thanks shadow, the runes on his sword are actually chaotic runes on the front it says "khorne" and on the back it has my name "ben" with a khornish symbol on it

its been known that i am khornes chosen gamer as i have his mark (yes i actually have a tattoo of the khorne symbol lol)

28-05-2009, 08:14
