View Full Version : Machine spirit themed army. thoughts/suggestions?

I posted something similar in the tactics section, but I'm asking slightly different questions here.

I want to build a "Machine Spirit" and/or Adeptus Mechanicus list. I'm not sure if they're kind of one in the same or not.

The idea is that it would theme around dreadnoughts, and techmarines.

Master of the Forge is a new techmarine HQ that allows dreads as heavy and elite.

I'm thinking of doing 4 dreadnoughts(2 drop podded), a thunderfire cannon, and a techmarine w/ full crew. I'd back that up with 3 tactical units, either in razorbacks or rhinos.

Maybe landspeeders for fast attacks, and, if possible, a landraider for the master of the forge.

I'm wondering what to do to make the dreads look different.

I'd have the ironclad w/ 2 close combat weapons, the 2 regular ones w/ 2 ranged weapons, and the venerable w/ a mix.

For the 2 ranged weapons, I'm thinking something like one I made earlier,

Looks like you are going for a "Scions of Mars" type of army rather than an Adeptus Mechanicus army. To me, a Scions of Mars type of army is a Space Marine army with strong ties to a forgeworld, and hence, all of the vehicles, Techmarines, plasma weapons, and other higher level tech that they use. To me, and Adeptus Mechanius army is more of a Forgeworld Defense or Explorator force, which would focus on the Skitarii, not on Space Marines.

Anywhoo...looks like you have an interesting force there.

Sounds like a neat army. Make sure you score some of the Iron Hands conversion kits to bionicize your Space Marines though. Keep everybody looking techy.

Thanks for that info Culven. I'll go with that. Are the scions a specific chapter, or more a branch off of other chapters?

I'd love to pick up some of the ironhands conversions, but it's a bit expensive.

I wish you could still buy individual bits, as the pit slaves http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/armySubUnitCats.jsp?catId=cat1060101&rootCatGameStyle= could work wonders.

I might buy some basic marines, then buy the iron warriors parts to make them more mechanical.

Not sure what to do about the dreads and techmarines.

"Scions of Mars" is a Trait Advantage in the current Space Marine codex which allows for a Techmarine HQ and Elite and Heavy Support Dreadnoughts. It is meant to represent certain chapters which have close ties to the Adeptus Mechanicus; the main one being the Iron Hands. I had considered using it for a Knights of Gryphonne chapter (I figure if the chapter shares a name with a Forgeworld, they might have other things in common). This was because I liked the tech-heavy army idea, but I don't care for the "the flesh is weak" mindset of the Iron Hands. There are several other chapters with a propensity to use large numbers of vehicles and other tech, and you are of course free to make up your own. Alternately, you could just claim that you are fielding the chapter Armoury in a large conflict to explain why you have a high ratio of techmarines and such, in case you want to go with an established chapter.

Just wondering what kind of points you're looking to hit, because as it stands you are WAY up there.

Iron Clad with Pod is 170, with no other upgrades.
Three 10 man tacs, bare bones is 510
+105 for rhino's, double that (roughly) for razorbacks.
250 for a Land Raider
About 150 for a regular dread, depending on how you kit them.
HQ gonna run close to 200 depending on how you trick him out.

That's coming in at close to 1500 and you don't have the thunderfires in there yet.

Looking around 2000.

1500 then add thunderfire for 100, a techmarine and crew for maybe 100-150, another dread for 150. About on target for 2k.

Some inspiration:
And wait for the rumoured AdMech coverage by one of the next FW books (and the upcoming BL novel). Until then you might be interested in the novel Dark Adeptus.

I might buy some basic marines, then buy the iron warriors parts to make them more mechanical. The Iron Hands parts have more bionics than the Iron Warriors parts.

If your theme is Machine Spirit, then you might want to cram a couple extra Land Raiders in your list. The new kit should help that too.

"Cramming" a couple more landraiders might be a tad challenging. I'm thinking of putting one in, hopefully as a dedicated transport, but I'm not sure which HQ choices can take them.

I love Micro Arts product. Problem is that I only play in GW stores, so I doubt that I could physically use them.

I'm willing to do conversions on the larger pieces(characters, dreads, big vehicles), but aside from basic kit/bit bashing, I'd rather not do army wide conversions.

If anybody has any leftover penitent engine arms, let me know, cause I'd love to use some of those.
