So, how many years have you been playing 40k? - specifically, what edition did you start playing in?

When you 'started playing' is defined as simply whenever you first played a game of any substantial points value. It can be your own or someone else's army. Please answer the question honestly.

Edit: Results- pretty much an even split between the first 3 editions. Man, you guys are ancient. I wasn't expecting quite so many long-time veterans out there. I have personally collected 40k stuff since '98 onwards but only got the rulebook and played my first game at the end of 4th ed.

Started with 40k shortly after RT was released, so ~20 years.

28-10-2008, 02:34
I don't know exactly, but it is around 10 or 11 years now. Such a lot has happened in that time (not least that I have moved on from Marines to real armies) that it seems like an age ago.

28-10-2008, 02:39
The end of 2nd edition so about 1997.

28-10-2008, 02:46
I started in July 2001

28-10-2008, 02:52
I started 40k as soon as 4th edition came out. I wasn't waiting for it or anything, just happened by chance that that is the time I found it.

28-10-2008, 03:27
Oh, Lord, this makes me feel so old.
Second edition, playing this thing almost 20 years. It gives me a headache thinking about all the hours trying to figure out what GW means to me as a "casual hobby"...

28-10-2008, 03:31
Rogue Trader baby! Of course I did skip 3rd and most of 4th editions but I played huge proxy battles of Rogue Trader more than 20 years ago. This thread and having a birthday recently officially made me feel OLD! Thanks!

Same here.

28-10-2008, 03:44
Another longbeard, here: 21 years, with brief breaks, but back to try every single edition put out so far.

You ask me? I know you didn't, but here goes anyway... That's likely going to keep happening until there's something so rotten about GW or my health that will put an end to this.

28-10-2008, 04:03
Started over 20 years ago with Orks at Battle at the Farm!

And I'm with DoctorZinieztro - it's going to take something serious with my own health to put a stop to this habit.

28-10-2008, 04:31
Started on the turn over ffrom Rogue trader to 2nd edition.

28-10-2008, 04:38
Ive been playing 40k since '05

....and since then have accumulated 20,000points of imperials.... Beign stationed over seas gives you some spare freetime....and i have about 15% of that painted... GOD that sucks.... i never really thought about it........

28-10-2008, 04:42
Started officially playing in 4th edition, but I was interested in the universe and stuck my nose into everything about it as early as 2001/2002 or so. Didn't really know a whole lot until I met some local gamers in about 2005 or so.

28-10-2008, 04:44
Very start of 3rd edition (3rd edition rules hadn't actually come out when I started), so about 11 years. Played until 4th edition, then stopped until 5th edition. I got 4000 points of blood angels during 3rd edition, which I think was good considering I was 9 and didn't have and real income.

28-10-2008, 04:51
I have been playing 40k since BEFORE Rogue Trader was released. :D How is this possible? Because I am the Kwisatz Haderach! Err, um, I got lucky and one of the local game shops got a demo copy a few weeks early.

28-10-2008, 04:58
I am a lowly 40K initiate, a neophyte if you will. I first picked the game up in May of 2006, then shortly after, got into fantasy, where I stayed up until 5th edition's release. So I've really only been playing and actively involved for a few months now, the other time was a lot of switching armies, until I got hooked by fantasy and a certain race of short bearded folk.

With that said, I'm stoked to start really playing 40K, and will hopefully have 2 armies (2k and 1K) full painted by mid next year'ish, so I'll be able to fully enjoy the game.

11 years or so now.

28-10-2008, 05:09
Been playing since the Emperor was a lad! (Rogue Trader)

I bought stuff at the end of 2nd edition and got into the mythos but did not start playing the GAME itself(and correctly) until beginning of third.
Praise you, you Dark Eldar crazy bastards for keeping me in the game!

28-10-2008, 08:57
Been in the wh40k-swamp for some 8 years or so now =)

28-10-2008, 09:03
I started 40k when 2nd edition was released, then took a hiatus from just before the Angels of Death codex was released until the latest Eldar codex. Been back into it hard ever since.

28-10-2008, 09:06
I started late 2nd edition ('97 or so), so make that 11 years.

28-10-2008, 09:31
Started just as 2nd edition was released. So thats, ummm, 15 years

28-10-2008, 09:48
Got my first army around 1991. comming to the end of rogue trader days. Only had a couple of games before 2nd ed came out. 'Ere We Go still has pride of place on my bookshelf.

17 years and still going. I think I'm in too deep to quit now.

28-10-2008, 10:12
Started playing just before the first codex chaos was reliased whitch was about 13 years ago.

28-10-2008, 10:47
I started playing about 12 months after Rogue Trader was released (it took that long for some of the kits to become available, at least where I was living at the time) but had the book from the day it was released. So 21ish years, and do you think I have ever finished painting an army? Of course, no army is ever finished, only abandoned. There's always room for one more unit...

That made me feel old, but not as old as the follow up question - how long have I been playing WHFB? Now that made me feel very very old.

28-10-2008, 10:59
The start of Rogue Trader, so just over 21 years.

Although I missed the end of second edition, most of third and the start of fourth edition.

28-10-2008, 12:01
I started playing towards the end of 1990. It all started for me towards the end of the Rogue Trader era with the publication of the original Eldar rules for Aspect Warriors and Seers in White Dwarf 127, and I've never looked back.

It does seem like a very long time ago now.

28-10-2008, 12:11
Started playing 17 years ago, back then I was into role playing games then I saw a 40k game (rogue trader) in a gaming club and I was hooked for life!

Sometimes I miss the weird and wonderful world of RT.
Second ed was really the power player edition and a big mess, glad it's long gone.

I missed the most of 3rd ed (busy with fantasy, bfg and relcoating to Blighty) but loved all the weird and wacky variant list between 3rd and 4th..... miss them a lot.

4th ed for me is the best so far (just my opinion).

5th, I'm still finding my feet with it. I want to see where it goes after the SM codex but so far I am not too impressed.

28-10-2008, 12:12
I started in 99...after playing WFB for two years prior to that.

28-10-2008, 12:26
With Rogue Trader in '87. Old timer. ;)

Sister Sin

28-10-2008, 12:35
Since 97 with a 2 year break during which I sold all my armies. Now back to square one.

28-10-2008, 12:39
man ..... was it 1998 when third came out. Wow how time flys when you kill things when DE for 10 years.

28-10-2008, 12:44
Started with Heroquest and Space Crusade in 92 but didn't get into it officially until my 12th birthday in 93. Haven't stopped since.

28-10-2008, 12:53
Rogue trader here.

28-10-2008, 12:56
AH those were the days.
I Started literally 3 days after 3rd edition came out, having found out about it about 3 weeks before, and was so advised to wait for that rather than confuse my tiny little brain =)

28-10-2008, 13:08
I played Eldar and Nid's under second edition (1997 I think) then moved on to 3rd edition shortly after.

I can't say I miss these times... My nids won only 1 game under 3rd edition :(

28-10-2008, 13:11
Rogue Trader. Got my first Space Marines in 1988 (I think they're still not painted..). Didn't really "get" it properly until second edition though..

28-10-2008, 13:13
Started to get into 40K (as opposed to WHFB) around the time the Realms of Chaos: Lost & the Damned came out.

First standalone 40K army (as opposed to using weird chaos warbands) was harlequins back in the days when my 1000pt list had 16 models!

Played regularly since 3rd ed

28-10-2008, 13:14
Rogue Trader. Got my first Space Marines in 1988 (I think they're still not painted..). Didn't really "get" it properly until second edition though..

You have no idea how long it took me to get save modifiers. It just DIDN'T MAKE SENSE.

If I get a -1 sv modifier shouldn't the number be reduced from 4 down to 3, not up to 5!?

It killed my math hating brain trying to figure it out. It was a negative modifier applied in a positive manner because the armour save was actually the opposite way around.

28-10-2008, 13:27
21 years here. Man, I'm getting old.

28-10-2008, 13:31
1993, for me. I didnt own an army of my own until this year when I could finally play Tzeench Daemons...a very long time to wait for an army you actually like the look of.

28-10-2008, 13:33
Well, I first started playing about 8-9 months before 2nd came out, and played through 2nd. Went on hiatus right before 3rd came out, and am just now starting to play again seriously.

Can't believe how different the rules are from 2nd! What?! No Ancestor Lord walking around chucking vortex grenades and destroying people in CC?!

First played 40K about 3 years ago when I moved to a GW town. Fortunately I have since been introduced to 2nd Edition.

28-10-2008, 13:41
I picked up RT in 1988, so I was a late starter :p

28-10-2008, 13:48
I started in 1987 with Rogue Trader, starting on the day it was released (Games Day 87 in London). Had a break during the 90's on and off, and came back fully under 4th ed.

28-10-2008, 14:01
1989, I was at college and played 40k as a sideline while waiting for a D&D group to start up. Needless to say, D&D had to wait ;)

28-10-2008, 14:23
Started with Battlefleet Gothic in 1999, then gatewayed into 40K in 2000, and WHFB a bit in 2001. The OP question is misleading, because "years played" may not correspond to "edition started with". So I'm only at 9 years, but started with 3rd edition. And don't miss 3rd edition one bit except for one rule that would have been neat to be maintained: Sweeping Advance fire!

28-10-2008, 14:44
Since 94 95ish. I took a break from 97-99.

28-10-2008, 14:50
Since the beginning times back in 1987/88 - still use most of that stuff too, although the deodorant grav tanks have not lasted so well

28-10-2008, 15:02
With the release of 3rd edition. A friend and I was going to start, but his older brother advised us to wait for a couple of months because the whole game was being updated.

After a year or so, I had the most horrible looking Ork army known to man. Every single game evolved into a shouting match, every single shouting match came to the brink of a fist fight. Every weekend ended with eternal hatred between my friends and me, every Monday we were looking forward to the next weekend and the next game. Good times. :)

28-10-2008, 15:07
Started playing 40k when my son bought the BfM starter box.
I have been a modeller and wargamer, mostly historical, for thirty odd years now and came late to 40k, in fact of the three core games it was the last one that I tried having already been playing WHFB and LOTR for a few years previously.
Funny thing is, I always looked at 40k as being a simpler game that was aimed at a younger audience, but now I find that I enjoy it just as much as any other game and play different games at different times depending on the mood that I am in.

28-10-2008, 15:08
what an interesting distribution so far....

28-10-2008, 15:24
Since the beginning times back in 1987/88 - still use most of that stuff too, although the deodorant grav tanks have not lasted so well

LOL. I remember that thing! :)

28-10-2008, 15:30
I started the last 2 years of 3rd edition. I was out for all of 4th edition and got back in for 5th ed.

28-10-2008, 15:36
*waves his 2nd ed Space Wolves codex*

Cry of the Wind
28-10-2008, 15:51
I bought my first GW models during 2nd Ed but never played or bought a rulebook. I was too busy playing Battletech at the time (and probably would still be if there were anyone left to play against). Started playing shortly after 3rd came out but never owned my own rulebook until 4th Ed. 4th Ed was the edition that got me into loving the game and playnig more often and in tournaments.

28-10-2008, 15:59
Over 20 years now, both in the UK and Germany. managed to cope with each sucessive change and not worry about how the game changes. Its still the same game just a bit different now

28-10-2008, 15:59
welll i begin 2000 i have 3 army Space Marines, Tau and Eldar.

28-10-2008, 16:14
This is a very interesting thread.

Its interesting to see how and when everyone started out.

I myself started out in 1989 for 40k. Its all about Ere We Go the Ork book.

Green skins, and I've recently restarted doing them, you can see some of my old orks on my blog, link at the bottom.

94 or 95 ish with 2nd edition.

Those pretty red space marines sucked me in!

28-10-2008, 17:34
I played Space Crusade as a kid, and eventually graduated to 2nd ed. 40k in around 1996. So that's 12 years

Except that I had a huge gap in the middle, missing all of 3rd ed. and some of 4th.

28-10-2008, 17:38
Started in the middle of 2nd, 1995. Played in the first US GT in 1997. Been playing regularly ever since, even during the year deployed to Korea

28-10-2008, 17:57
Started in 1st edition, just before 2nd edition was released, about 16ish years ago

28-10-2008, 20:21
I started my first army half way into 4th edition. I finished my first army about 15 months later, and 40K has been dead at my club ever since. :cries: They are not even aware of 5th edition. Damn WoW and Magic.

28-10-2008, 23:01
Right at the begining when RT came out. My first white dwarf was issue 92, the one before rogue trader came out. It was my first GW book and RTBo1's where my first ever models...still use em

28-10-2008, 23:06
I began painting Chaos 5 years ago when I happened across GW website. I just thought they looked cool. I actually havn't begun playing 40k until this year. Strange but true.

I started PAINTING 40k first but began PLAYING fantsy first. Go figure.

Death Korp
28-10-2008, 23:29
Started in 1999, when the 3rd Edition Blood Angel Codex came out, got the Starter Box for my 7th birthday. The Marines were painted beautifully as Blood Angels by my dad, and he was kind enough to include some old Space Hulk terminators, painted in the same colours. Thats when I started 40k properly. I haven't played it that much, that was until i started attending a club this year and the 5th Edition has come out too. I was painting and modelling more then playing in the first 8 years, its only been this year that i've got into the playing side of things (apart from LOTR, i've played that gaem for years, its just so ace!)

29-10-2008, 05:10

Having played D&D for a few years at that point, 40k was not that bad.

29-10-2008, 06:05
Started playing with 4th edition, started collecting in 3rd.

29-10-2008, 11:00
End of RT, but only played like 2 games before 2:ed showed up. Played all of 2:ed, though at the end of 2:ed it really was a total mess. Eldar and SW just destroyed everything.

Played 3:ed awhile, and in the end almost stopped playing since 3:ed sucked so horribly. Rhino-rush, marines and plasmaguns all the way baby! Sweeping advance and all the other really bad rules of 3:ed took most of the fun away.

4:ed got me back into the game. Generally a quite good ruleset.

5:ed removed some of the highlights of 4:ed, but brought with it some new improvements. I really like it that vehicles are abit more resilient, whilst at the same alot more vulnerable to assaults.
Also only troops as scoring has really changed how people play the game, putting alot more emphasis on making an army focused around your troops.

29-10-2008, 13:02
Damn near 20 years (started seriously collecting an army about '89-'90, had books 'n' stuff before that though)...Oh god has it been that long? What have I done with my life!?

29-10-2008, 13:11
Rogue Trader from Day One.

29-10-2008, 13:32
Started in early 2003 when on post-op and had 2.5 months with nothing to do.....

29-10-2008, 14:14
RT. I was not so lucky to a have game store like most ya' gitz. I got most of my stuff at a book store in the mall of all places? good times... later on we found a ..meh store.

29-10-2008, 16:00
I began with Rogue Trader when I started Secondary School way back in 1988 after a group of us press-ganged the librarian into getting a copy!

29-10-2008, 17:18
I started playing Mordhelm, but by the time I started playing 40k it was half a year into 3rd edition.

29-10-2008, 17:23
A few years before 4th edition. 2001 I think. Started with a Demolisher for my birthday from a friend.

29-10-2008, 17:27
Started when I was 8 or so with 2nd edition......damn 12/13 years playing 40k, time flies :P .

29-10-2008, 17:35
Right at the end of 2nd Edition. I happened to be at the game store I went to when an Outrider (do those even still exist?) was there demo-ing the yet-to-be-released 3rd Edition starter box with Black Templar and Dark Eldar. Been hooked ever since. I played a couple of games of 2nd using some other guy's armies until I got the starter box for Christmas, and have never looked back.

29-10-2008, 17:39
I started the day the 2nd edition chaos codex was released really

29-10-2008, 17:51
Remember it well 1992 was my first ever game, really started to get into it seriously on a hobby/game side though with the release of 2nd Edition. Dropped out of playing the game in 1998 though kept up with WD and all the background, think I have owned at some point every codex/army book there has been with the exception of the Daemons of Chaos recent release.

Just started collecting again. Back to terrorising the galaxy with my Orks, well, running suicidally at tin cans with guns, with bigger tin cans.. Deff Dreads.. ooo Deff Dreads..

29-10-2008, 18:06
one day way back in 1987.I was playing steve jacksons battle suit ,a game in the tank game oger.all of you that a over 30 will reamber this one.and there was this box of plastic space marines,WOW thats cool mybe I can use them for battle suit.hmmm whats is book Rogue Trader ,well thats how it happened for me.I was hooked. Now 20 years later and millions
of dead IG and spacemarines and lots a paint later I still love this game.I reamber when I thought I was cool poeple would come over my house, and say, what do you play with toy solders.I would say Yes ,you can not argue with passion.

29-10-2008, 18:09

This has been a very Interesting thread. My first memories of 40K dates back over 20 years. I have vague memories of a holiday in Brighton UK where it rained constantly for several weeks. I think we stumbled upon a GW and I can remember buying a box of Space Marine Bikers, some paints and glue. I remember that I had them all bashed together and painted in under an hour - they looked terrible

Fast forward 20 years and I have recently got into wargaming and 40K again. I found a club around a year ago whilst I was looking for a hobby to take up that would help relieve stress and lower my blood pressure. The club at the time played mainly a mixture of LOTR and WFB. I built up a couple of small LOTR armies but never really got into WFB. Most of the LOTR guys moved on to WFB so that left me with a dilema, move on to something else completely, find another club or play WFB, even though I wasn't a fan.

Then I believe I was sent a sign, I won a Space Marine Strike Force box set in a painting competition run by a FLGS and so I thought "Why not take up 40K". so here I am, I've built my first squad of Tactical Marines and have begun to paint the first one

I've always thought that the GW gaming crowd are great and I'm glad to be a part of this hobby

29-10-2008, 18:54
I painted some of the figs for a Gamma World game in '89 or '90, but I didn't pick up the rules until late 1995.

29-10-2008, 19:06
I guess I technically played a few games around 1998, but I started officially playing the game at the start of 4th edition.

29-10-2008, 19:52
I played rogue trader using a buddies models. I didn't have the money to buy my own until 2nd ed.

29-10-2008, 23:09
Roughly 16 Years here, Since the Space Wolves got their first release in WD, i used to read by older brothers copy but when SW got released they were just too damn awesome not to beg my parents for :D

Emperors Teeth
30-10-2008, 00:02
Not 100% sure. I've had models since I was 8 and invented my own version of the game based on what I could remember from a GW. It was a long time ago... 18 yrs now! At least I got 2nd ed and Dark Millenium shortly after that. Still got the complete Dark Millenium set and all my rule books in excellent condition too :).

Although i bought 2nd ed and played like a few games. I voted 3rd as thats when i really started collecting an army. It was the new metal Guard models. I basicly decided to collect one of each boxed set. My command squads were made up of the older RT Guard, which was still being sold in blisters at the time.

I also collected Orks when the green codex first came out. I was so proud of my painting of those guys. I then sold the army to someone and she repainted the whole lot and made a real mess of it.

RT era vet here. Been at it a while.

30-10-2008, 02:34
Started playing in 2nd ed. when I was ~12-13
First game I was the orks against my mates SM's in one of the missions from the box set. Then I looked through the book and saw the Eldar striking scorpians and I was sold.

I collected and played them for 2 years before getting bored. 2 years passed and I picked up again at the start (almost) of third at which point I realised that I had 3-4 of each squad and very few guardians and I didn't want to paint more so I put them down and picked up DE instead. I played them for about 2 years and then put it all down until 2 years ago.

This time I've been going for 2 years and it doesn't look like stopping (at least just yet) and have picked up the Nid's as well for a change because just playing DE with the same codex I was way back when builds on you a bit

I invented the game with my time machine...so when I go back in time create it then...erm...uh...don't know how long...;).

Though I have never taken a game break...so many have fallen along the way...

I salute them!

20 Years - Wow. It doesn't seem that long. I guess I'm an old dude.

I ache more than I used to, but I can bench press more now!

QFT. Although the two can often be directly related!

I've been playing Warhammer since 1991, but I didn't get into 40k until the release of 2nd edition.
