Which unit do you thing personifies the chapter the most. I would say a venerable dreadnaught personifies Iron Hands rather well, whilst an assault squad is highly characterisitc of Raven Guard.

A list as you may:
Iron Hands -Venerable Dreadnaught, Iron Fathers
Salamanders - Tactical Squad, Thunder hammer termies, anything with a melta/flamer
White Scars - Bike Squadron, Rhino Squads
Raven Guard - Assault Squad, Scouts
Crimson Fists - Sternguard veterans
Imperial Fists - Thunder hammer terminators, vindicators.

I am planning on creating a crusade army and invovle as many codex chapters as possilbe but i want each unit to be a fair representation of the chapter it came from so no Iron Hand bike squads or White Scar terminators etc...

Add Vanguard vets to the Raven Guard and rhino mounted tacticals to White Scars.

Salamander's tacticals would be armed with melta and flamer special and heavy weapons, and Thunder Hammer armed assault terms should be included too

Done, done and done.

How about librarians for blood ravens, scouts for exorcists, techmarines for Iron Hands and Praetors of Orpheus.

Salamanders: multi-melta devs.

Cheers,

Shureley White scars are most personified by packs of bikers? Haveing almost the entire chapter maintian bike training and use is after all their main gimmick.

If anyone was rhino happy its going to be a tossup between bloodangels and space wolves. (assault squads seem more fitting to bloodangels IMHO)

Just my 2cents

Oh and dark angels devastator squads maybe (deathwing and ravenwing make it hard to pick one unit)

Devastators too for fists, with ML or LC.

I'm ignoring other chapters like BA, DA etc... because they aren't so much codex chapters and the varying degrees of uniqueness personifiy them. For BA you coudl say Baal predators, death company, rhino squads, furiso dreads etc...

What i'm trying to do is find the essense of the army

I wouldn't necessarily put assault marines at the very top of the Raven Guard list... as a RG player, my main gimmick is the drop pod....while there are many who do take a large number of assault troops, i only have 2 full squads (for the large games). I know that shrike is the GWs created SC, but that doesnt necessarily personify the chapter as a whole. There's also a large use of scouts (at least in the fluff)

As far as I remember, Whitescars were all about being mounted and highly mobile - a tactical squad in a drop pod or rhino is just as endemic of the WS as is their bike mounted divisions. The reason why I offered them up is because so far there were only Salamanders as an option for tacts and I thought it'd be nice to have other variations on tacts themes for the OP to choose from, seeing tacts form the guts of our armies regardless of chapter

The 3rd ed space marine codex used rhino mounted tac squads to personify the white scars supported by 3 fast attack choices. The idea was simply: this chapter is mobile. The nothing but bikes wasn't added until the 4th ed trait system.

As for raven guard: what about scouts? They are meant to be the masters of infiltration after all. Massed assault squads are more blood angel style.

The typical Iron hand thing is actually the techmarine. Or rather, the master of the forge/Iron father as he was originally called. Though to be fair, in their first incarnation they were diet space wolves:
Ven dreads (taken from the wolves)
Termies as squad leaders (wolfguard wannabes)
A techmarine leader (Iron priest?)

Nah, the nothing but bikes was the natural extension of Paul Sawyer buying more bikes and wanting to use them all in one battle. ;)

I do miss the Fat Bloke though.

What units characterise Ultramarines. They are such an awkward chapter to characterise. I woudl argue tactical squads is what makes an ultramarine army as given that they are jsut a standard army and dont naturally specialise in anything so tactical squads are an obvious choice as they are the most standrard unit in any space marine army.
