Heresy age World Eaters

My last thread for these marines seems to have been hijacked by all my other bits of commission work so I decided that it's time to get some order in here and start a world eater only thread so here we go :-

This is a log of a commissioned army that im slowly working on. The fella who im painting them for has given me a loose idea of what he wants and let me play from there!! he's sent/sending loads of spares and full kits to chop and change it's all good :-)

The initial brief is for a heresy marine force sort of on the brink of turning still in original chapter colour's and very few spiky/mutated bit's

This will be a picture heavy thread so should be plenty of eye candy to keep it interesting will update it as things get done

Well lets start at the top.

This was the initial mini that I painted for this force he's a captain and he based on one of the marine veteran models along with an arm of another of the vet mini's that was holding a bolt pistol which I removed and replaced with a double headed chain axe (had to be really). This guy is a bit darker than the rest of the marines, but I suppose you don't have much time to stop and clean your armour when your rebelling :-)

He sort of set the tone for the force, mainly that of it having marine and chaos marine kits mixed together. I think it comes across ok, without making them seem to loyal or to chaos you'll notice that its not going to be correct armour models for the heresy time line.....hope that doesn't put anyone off

Next up we have the first 10 man squad. Gonna keep mutations to a minimum and restrict them to characters and squad leaders, with the idea been that these are the one's that would have earned the favour, and interest of demons first

Heavy bolter marine

Another one of those must use head's here, chopped the horn off the side and replaced it with an aerial. I think this one really suits heavy weapons. wanted to make it look like he's been using the heavy bolter as a club hence the blood splat on the end of the barrel and the bloody hand print down the front of his chestplate

I blacken everything near the end of the barrel on the mini due to the heat of the meltagun firing also spun the barrel upside down so it had a single spike on top

that's pretty much unto date with all the stuff from the old thread so here's something new

Latest thing that's been painted is a black reach dread, I'm surprised by how good these new plastic snapfit mini's are.

For this one I've gone with plenty of damage, and a couple of small conversions. Swapped two of the powerfist fingers(?) for chaos chainswords, wasn't sure how this would turn out (always a bit wary about chopping up other peoples mini's) but went with the swords with a slight bend in the end of them, made them look like they a can still grip and could always be used as other dread weapons. Also added a chain sword to the bottom of the multi melta as well. I've kept all the marking to the top of the dread for no other reason than it filled in the large flat space on top (nothing to do with all the other flat areas been full of battle damage honest)

yea I toyed with that but I wanted them to still be able to grip plus it adds to the slow slide toward been covered in spiky bits that chaos seem to love :-)

Looking great mate! Always good to see blue and white beserkers and the more modern armour aspects could easily be attributed to them being set towards the very end of the war.

Im the guy that dave8oy is painting these awesome WEs for. He is working to my brief as well as letting his imagination run wild too and coming up with these cool minis which fit the feel of my army perfectly.
I know that the armour is not to time but I love the way they are looking and cant wait to see them arranged on the table.
Busy trying to work out how the berzerkers are going to look and dave8oy has some excellent ideas so watch this space.

good work, the Main colours are very strong and have nice tonal quality. the spatterings of gore are well controlled and realistic to boot!

Been a bit quite with the updates one this so here's a catch up:-

These are going to be used as 2 five man havoc squads but will be painted as a ten man devastator squad (all be it one with 6 heavy weapons).

First off is the champion/sergeant

As the squad wont actually have a champ he's tooled up as a normal marine just couldn't resist giving them some sort of squad leader :-)

pretty standard really not as much blood on these, I figured they'll stay back shootin rather than up close and personal but did include a fold out blade on the side of the launcher for those up-close encounters

was a real bitch trying to get the lascannon cables to go over the crouched legs without the barrel pointing skywards but im happy with the results also got a nice big bayonet attachment curtsey of some jungle fighters :-)

Promised myself that I'd try and keep some kind of order to this tread but looks like that's out the window......

here's the first of the berserkers

much kit bashing's going to go into this squad, with parts from marines, chaos marines, and even some empire flagellants.

was a bit worried when I first got the flagellants as the arms and heads are a lot smaller than I expected but with some green stuff to build up the neck and weapon Im very happy with the end result

they're gonna lose the blue shoulder pads in favour of the red arm. I've tryed to make them look like unhinged madmen while still keeping the W/E theme got another 11 of these to build but must finish the havoc's first......may have to lock the bits in a cupboard somewhere so not to be tempted... :-)

Gorgeous stuff! Always loved the pre-Heresy WE scheme, and yours look gorgeous, especially the blue. Love the blood as well, that hand print is brilliant! Great blacklining too.

well real life's slowly getting back to normal after the birth of my second son so back with the painting....

finally got around to finishing the havoc squad with another 11 berserkers to follow busy busy busy

(pic's have come out very weird lighting wise will try and sort them later)

first up we have the 3rd lascannon

really starting to hate the metal lascannons getting them to match with the backpack in anything other than the "correct" pose is a nightmare had to chop the trigger arm off and replace it with part of a plastic one to get it to look right quite happy with the end result

I'm glad this log is still alive. The Bayonet on the lascannon on page 2 is something I on't think I've seen before but its so very Adeptus Astartes! One comment on the painting. take your time. The first couple of marines were exceptional, as is the beserker (liking the litanies BTW) but the last few seem a bit more rushed, not sure why, but thats the impression i got. you obviously have the talent!

Love it, simply love it. Gonna steal the Devastator squad ideas such as the caught out marine and the kneeling las-cannnon marine for my Ultramarines simply because they have so much character and pose than the standard marines. Hanging on this log for more goodness from you!

Time for another update i think....

Well I've started working on the berserkers, there going to follow along the lines of the test mini that i did (see above). Got and almost bottomless supply of parts for these :-) so expect many BIG choppy weapons!!!

There's 12 to do in total 11 troops and 1 skull champ. Details still to be worked out on the champ... not sure what colour to do him, any thoughts would be welcome, best ive come up with so far is a reverse to what the others are painted i.e. all red except one white arm??

Reposed this guys arms so that both hands can grip the axe, as he jumps down off the rock onto to some poor sole. Was a bitch to get the arms right but im happy with it :-). Used a head from the flagellants im really pleased with the way these look and there's plenty of different ones which means they'll be no repeats in the squad!!

The scriptions on the armour of the berzerkers is such a nice touch. Seems to add to the obsession that gladiator berzerkers have with perfecting their martial prowess.

I think that a combination of the two is the way to go, some guys covered head to foot in manic scribblings and other guys only with a few. adds a nice variety to the unit.

SHOCK HORROR another update to this thread!!! here's the next two berserkers!!

Gone all two handed with these chaps. First off we have a twin hatchet marine again I've used another of those flagellant heads, really happy with the way these are matching up to the image I have of early berserkers (though the none bearded heads are way to small and make them look like they've had there heads shrunk :-)

next up we have twin plasma pistol's. I was influenced, buy the new ork stormboyz nob, to mount them mounted them under-slung(?) also wired them to the backpack for power as there early plasma weapons. Note the dead blood angel been trampled into the mud underfoot nothing like a bit of payback :-)

No clue, but love your army so far, the colour scheme is pulled off to great effect and the conversions are just bliss.
Have always wanted to do a heresy age/pre heresy army but have always wondered which side of the rules to use. Except my army would have to be pre heresy thousand sons, just love the iconography and the details on the armour.

Because they are older models, and the farther back you go in citadel history, the more anotomically incorrect the models seem to get.

Really like your stuff. Especially like the diversity and the character in the berserkers.

I do think that some of the blood would look better with some gloss varnish on it. Or you could use TCR for your blood spatter.

I really like those......do you mind sharing how you did the whites? I am also working on pre-heresy world eaters and have had a hard time w/ the white. I comes out ok, but is time consuming. I would appreciate the help. Keep up the great work.....I can't wait for more updates.

the whites are a pain in the **** way I do them is

white spray undercoat
heavy black wash
thin'ish skull white leaving black showing in detail
very thin watered down black wash
skull white high light

the blood and mud covers any blemishes

No fluff reason. Khârn was blue and white too. It's just the painting style of this artist to always use few different colours for his artworks.

I like the helmet of Khârn with this Macragge pattern mixed with the Berzerkers Arx Skull Helmet.

Well maybe not quite kharn but here's my interpretation of a berserker champion :-

pulled out the stops here paint wise & a fair bit of chopping went into this chap, I was a bit worried how he was gonna turn out, the huge ork axe made him look really over balance, hence the large chaos symbol on the backpack. It gave it a bit more symmetry and balanced it nicely. With a skull theme in mind (hence the use of the chaplain mini) bunched a load of the skulls on chains (from the marauder and flagellants) together and used them instead of replacing the pistol in his left hand. Then to finish it off I though it needed a special base so went with a resin one. I've been looking at these for a while there really great with all the half buried skulls and really fits well with the mini...

Man, these things just keep getting better! Definitely some awesome conversions and the paint jobs are top notch... I especially like the idea of the mud slogging up the boots tying in with the basing, a very nice detail. It's always the little touches that make the most difference. So far, my favorite is the "roaring pose" guy, but it's hard to choose with so many nice early-Chaos figures to choose from. Can't wait for the full army shot when it's all done, cheers!

Great work, bro. Only thing /I/ could see /myself/ changing would be to add some bronze into the bloodied areas of the zerks, like in a way that it appeared the blood was washing the white and blue away, leaving red and bronze in it's place. Not sure how to do that, not skilled enough myself. But I think that would be f'king killer.

yea i though about adding bronze but wanted to keep to a limited palette..also wanted to make them look like first company vets i.e. different marking to the rest of the "normal squads" hence the red arm rather than blue shoulder pads with hind sight maybe bronze shoulder trim on the red arm would have worked?......

ah man these guys are great.

My style is so different, perhaps thats why I love these guys so much.

They're not just an army, they feel like a cast of characters. Each one feels like a name, rather than just a marine.

SWEET! these are some nice updates mr Dave sir!
I love the beserkers squad cos it looks very violent but I have to say my favourite thing here has to be the scout conversion with the IG powerfist. he looks SO chaosy, Ididnt even realise it was based on a scout until I read it, AND I've been makign scouts non stop for about a week lol.

The marauder horsey sprue is seriously useful isn't it! Almost wish I still had space puppy 13th company... :D

If you are looking for unique heads, you may want to look at some Urak'hai ones. I know that the LOTR minis are on a smaller scale, but the Urak'hai are kinda big, so they may fit a scout better. The one's witht he helmets seem fairly farrel/barbarian enough while still hiding their lack of human traits.

The scouts count as regular CSMs although in tourney play they are not permitted (as I discovered) due to the fact they look "too scouty".

That's a really characterful group there.
Santa is kind of the odd one out though. I don't think it's because of the beard, I think it's because of the side wind. He looks like he's in his own weather system, somehow, when he stands in the group with the others.
