Me and my old mate Hairyman are considering plunging headfirst into the world of epic.

This way we will be even bigger than the troops we command, and can lord it up even more...

The question is: what is the game like? We've not played since the original SM and adeptus titanicus game all those years ago.

Are all armies supported?
Is the game challenging and tactical compared to FB and 40k?
Is the new rule set any good? I have it but haven't played yet.

My buddies and I played it in it's previous 2 editions. We LOVED it. Of course, it sucks your money out so be carefull of that. :p Then again, remember that it is a lot harder to find opponants with that game then mainstream 40k. The way we got around that was to just buy up all of the armies until we had 10+-20k+ worth of models for each army. That way, we had plenty of variety instead of just facing the same old army game after game. We also allowed free use of allies and so forth to even further expand the variety.
I would say that if you guys have the free cash, go for it.

IN answer to the main question: yes, yes, good God man, YES!!! You should definitely start playing Epic! :D

It's quite fast moving, everything is in detatchments that are preset interms of points - like 2nd Edition Space Marine/Titan Legions.

At present there are LOADS of army lists: 3 in the main rule book, 3 in Swordwind Supplement, and lots of playtest ones, most of which will eventually be official e.g. Chaos Space Marines, Tyranids. Oh, and the Tau one is in Imperial Armour 3! To get the playtest/unofficial ones, I recommend goign to EpiComms (http://www.epic40k.co.uk/epicomms/ikonboard.cgi) or the Specialist Games Forum (http://www.specialist-games.com/forum/default.asp).

Currently the only armies which GW sell are Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Orks, Eldar, and the Siegemasters Guard variant army. Early next year we've been promised Feral Orks, then following that Chaos Space Marines (including Lost and the Damned) and then Tyranids. Forge World produce all the miniatures for the Epic Tau, as well as variants of Vehicles and War Machines for Imperial Guard, Orks and Chaos, and some Grey Knights ones too.

I currently have (in various states of construction and painting) a Guard Army, two Marine armies (Iron Hands and my own Fire Storm chapter), an Ork army, an Iron Warriors army, a Titan Legions army, and I am trying to get the minis to make a Tyranid army.

Anyway, I would recommend Epic as it has some great models, and offers a fun, if different experience of 40k.

Excellent.

I assume the old Space Marine and Adeptus models will still be useable?

Absolutely! In the appendix at the back of the rulebook it's got a list of rules and 'count-as' suggestions for old models, but if you're using Marine and Titans there's not much change. I suspect you'll be especially interested in the Adeptus Titanicus Titan Legions list which is currently in it's 2nd playtest version. You can get it here: http://www.specialist-games.com/epic/Vault.asp down at the bottom, under 'Titan Legion Army List Vol. 2'

Enjoy! :D

Should be pointed out that the Tau list in IA3 is not only incomplete but an older version of the SG list - its not drastically wrong but if you are shelling out that much already for epic Tau, saving that £50 means you might be able to eat at somepoint.

Cheers chaps.

Looks like we'll have a go. I reckon I can trade for a VERY large amount of SM, IG, eldar and chaos stuff. Actually getting all my old 1st Ed stuff back from kid I gave it to years ago (he's grown up now...oh I'm so old!)

i love epic. who doesn't love lots of artillery and squadrons of superheavy tanks.
i've got a huge IG force (with 18 basilisks and 9 manticores).
far more tactical than 40k.

EpicA is hugely superior to 40K, but finding opponents can be frustrating, so make sure you pester every 40K player you know to take it up at the same time. None of you will regret it, and you might never touch 40K again.

I concur wholeheartedly with the positive statements here - at my local GW I can now get a game of epic every week due to pestering (albeit admittedly it's mostly against one guy)

Go for it, everything the other guys have said is all true. I'm currently building up a SiegeMasters are, I've only had one test game but it was fun stuff!

Check out my test game here.

Hi!

Zoink and others.

If your interested in getting into epic with rules that support ALL the old stuff and the newer models try NetEpic. Its based on the SM2/TL rules, updated, streamlined and FREE!!

Our new version 5.0 is available at: http://netepic.org/EPICentre/Downloads/

You can get the core rules and army lists there. We continuously support our rules through our website and yahoogroup.

Also we are in the process of making our full color (with many pics and good fluff stories) version of our rules (NetEpic Gold) with will be a true e-book made for printing and binding.

I'm more than happy to field any questions.

Epic A is a great game.

The rules are free and although support seems to be middling-to-poor, it is still one of the greatest games made by GW ever (in my opinion).

Having said that, you can always give NetEpic a try - never played it myself but it has kept itself going for a long time, and seems to have avoided GW's Vulture Squadron pouncing on it and trying to threaten it out of existence!

the added bonus of epic is that you can get a 5000pt army into a case the size of an a4 ringbinder.
portable gaming :D:D

It can be cheap - or horribly expensive, the standard game size is a little larger than 40K (2-4000) however as can be seen on the online store, a 2000pt army is about £75..unless you play Tau, oh gods if you play Tau you long for army deals like that Would probably say its about double an SG army, which is sad as most FW epic stuff is cheaper than SG. Infantry is the only problem.

Epic is great, please dive right in, just get the rules off the SG forums living rule book and hit epiccoms as well. The support currently is so-so but hopefully SGs will eventually pull thru tough times.

I hate to say this, but please try E:A before you fall back on NetEpic. NetEpic is nice, and personally I envy the following that exists for it, but Epic: Armageddon is a better game and it deserves promulgation more then NetEpic.

Agreed. Epic:Armageddon is superior to NetEpic. Hell, it's superior to 40K!! I'm lucky in that I've turned my girlfriend onto it as well as having a family member who plays IG and his friend who is getting into Orks. I played the old SM/TL game and loved it and I have to say that this version of Epic far exceeds that game by leaps and bounds. So if you have an opponent already get the game. You won't be sorry.

Just play... Epic reflects war in M41 better than 40k ever could! And it is a game where balance combined arms is beyond key. Tactics is a must. I have seen Marine forces without Air support destroyed by ORK air. A tourney list has to be superbly balanced. Sceniros are fun to boot. A buddy of mine and I have had an escalating arms race once we see just how powerful a unit type can be. I now have 2500 pts of Titans, 3000 pts of Space Marines, and I will have a small (5000 pt) Imperial Guard Regiment eventually.

Epic is the way battles in the 40k Universe should be played. 40k is an assault in Epic, something we roll out in a few minutes with a dozen or so dice each. This is not what we read in the fluff or see in the art. We see vast armies with gaint machines following them. This is what we have in Epic.

So play it yes... get going...

Seriously start playing now.

Right now.

Stop reading and play.

I can't wait for the new Chaos rules. I get my Baneblade back!

Yes you bloody well should! :D

Seriously, I've played all four editions and to me Epic A is a very slick system, probably the best to date. You have to plan and think and plot and scheme to be successful.

There are a few tiny little oddities that will have you going " hmmmm?" but the player's decisions can have more of an effect on the outcome of a game other than choosing to take space marines or not!

But the best bit is seeing 3 or 4 thousand points worth of army on the table, especially when Titans are involved. The whole battlefield just looks so much bigger and more impressive.

You get much more of a sense of these huge sweeping battles that they always bang on about in the fluff.

Definitely yes, I come from WHFB, 40K and BFG background, ad I absolutely loved the game. I didn't see the Netepic rules until after I read the E:A, and I don't mean to bash Netepic, but I didn't liked them enough, I prefer E:A by far, it's a great game, you can take it with you easily, the only problem is that you have to convince at least 2 more buddies so you can have someone to play as it is not as popular as the core systems, sadly.

Tastyfish
29-11-2005, 00:29
Not to mention that they are cheaper than 40K ones, and seeing as you will probably have a smaller group than WFB/40K it prevents one army tooling itself up for dealing with another exclusively. If you have to fight a range of opponents you'll find a use for more units.
