It has been awhile since I have invested any time or energy in hobby-pursuits and even longer since I had a plog and as it is my slow time work-wise it must be time to start another.

Mostly what motivates me is getting something done for Astronomi-con (http://www.astronomi-con.com/)tournaments. I have habitually taken variations on my Guard army although this year I am entertaining thoughts of fleshing out my DH army to 1500 pts. and taking that.

Astro also encourages players to bring their own terrain so I usually like to build something for that.

To start off with, I'll post pics of some GKT's I recently finished (flocking the bases notwithstanding). These guys took me about 6 months of picking at them here and there so expect updates to be sporadic. :(

*First comment dance in order*

Well, your models look very nice so far, so hopefully updates will not be as sporadic as you claim them to be.

Very nice colourscheme. I like the not quite white with gold details a lot! The red compliments everything rather nicely! Keep up, and hopefully more real soon.

What are you planning to paint up next?

Codsticker

I'll probably alternate between terrain and models so next up will be either a building I've been working on or trying to make something of a toy crane I found. Model-wise, it may be my Grandmaster and a retinue or a unit of regular grey Knights.

This piece...
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n34/Codsticker/IndustrialTableJan09b.jpg
...will eventually be added to this table:
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n34/Codsticker/IndustrialTableA.jpg

This table made it's debut at Astro-Vancouver last year but as the density of the terrain is currently a little sparse, I've decided to add some more to it. The theme of the table is a surface supply depot on Mars so the pink foam will eventually be red and orange with lots of rocks; I also have Adeptus Mechanicus decals to add to increase the martian flavour.:p

The Grey Knights look excellent mate! Very nice smooth painting, but the main colour is a real standout for me - it's subtle but wuite striking. The "Boltgun Metal and Wash" look can be very gaudy, I'm not a fan of NMM, but this is nicely in between. It looks like oxidised aluminium or something. The only thing I think they need is eyes: Those dark eye lenses might be realistic (... ahem) but I think tiny dots of a light colour (red ot matcht he robes, yellow for the gold, even just white) to suggest the presence of something shiny within would make them look more sinister.

I take it the extra foam on the board will be the "join" between the paved area and the martian desert? Sounds very cool. That will really change the vibe of the terrain from clean-looking light industrial area to desolate, windswept fronier outpost (grimdark!!1). Good stuff.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks McMullet, I forgot that a few on here have seen this terrain before. :D Although I quite like the eyes they do lack something...

Very 'crisp' and clean.

I think the only thing missing is the completed basing; then they should look top notch.

I have a good start on a second building for the Indutrial table; it only needs a base to be ready for painting:

I may add a few more bits and bobs.

Find some scale barb wire/razor wire. You could make a perimeter fence with holes in various areas. Would look good imho.

Here is the above building with a couple of extra bits and a basecoat of grey.

Wow, Codsticker can paint! And his house is clean (and purdy, too)! Not to mention that is some nice terrain you have going there.

Really looking forward to seeing this log updated, because, as mentioned, the paint job is very, very nice, and the building is very 'clean and sharp' ( as my plasticard/foamboard cuts always seem to have been done with a chainsaw or paper shredder, apparently).

Keep us updated!

Thanks for checking in NoS. The walls of the building are 2mm styrene sheet from Evergreen with Evergreen's metal roofing and various bits of tubing and such. It's much tidier than foamcore but foamcore has better thickness for scale. 1/4 inch styrene sheet would be both heavy and a bitch to work with.

Time for my weekly update. I bought a HQ scale crane, which is too small for a free-standing crane in 40K scale but could work for a mobile crane, so I am in the process of puting as base together for it. The first pic shows the crane as it came out of the package and the second and third show the base so far:

Hang on! When did Codsticker leave the safety of The Wastes?

Great looking industrial building thingy. I'm quite scared by the level of detail. Is that a drain pipe running down the side on the lower section?

Er, it could be... or it could be a conduit for wiring or gas.

Low, these many days....

Not much progress, but I shall post pics nonetheless :D. At this point the basic structure is done and I am going to move onto detailing. I am waiting on the arrival of some Evergreen Styrene hex-rod for bolts as well as some other styrene pieces. I have since removed the stabilisers as they are far too wimpy (and besides, they were on crooked ) and have plans to add beefier ones.

That building looks classy. Not only that, but it looks playable too (windows big enough to see through, nice wide ledges - and is the roof removable?). I really can't see any way to improve it, and I look forward to seeing it painted.

I have to say though, I'm not convinced about this crane. To me it still looks like a 50 storey high tower crane and the shape is somehow not right for something small like that.

How about using the bits to make something more like one of these:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Crane_machine_slewing_platform.svg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hydraulic_Truck_Crane.jpg

Either that or it would make a great piece of Epic terrain... ;)

Codsticker
16-02-2009, 21:22
Yeah, I'm not married to the crane itself; the more I play around with the base the more I think I will manipulate the crane section somewhat. I will probably make it into something like these, without the cab:

Codsticker
17-02-2009, 02:34
McMullet's advice sent me over the edge and, after much hacking and chopping the crane is now looking like this:

Codsticker

Oops... I forgot this one which shows the crane on it's deck. The decking has had some treadplate added, angle iron ran around the edge and there is some channel iron added for re-enforcement on the undercarriage (all of which really isn't detectable in the photograph ).

I should say that food is now being prepared with vapour.

The telescoping shenanigans look very convincing. Are you going to make something to tow it as well? Though I guess a Chimera could do that perfectly well.

Codsticker
17-02-2009, 14:39
Are you going to make something to tow it as well?

Absolutely not!:D This piece of "terrain" has already taken longer than it should. I have a bunch of other stuff I want to get to: more grey Knights, more terrain, etc,. I'm trying to get a bunch of these little projects tidied up by early June. That may sound like a long time but at my rate it isn't.:(

Now to decide which colour to paint it:
John Deere green (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Deere2.JPG)
Komatsu yellow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wheel_Excavater_Hanomag_Komatsu_001.jpg)
or Hitachi orange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hitachi_06.jpg) (red?)

17-03-2009, 21:02
The little engine compartment came out very well. Look forward to seeing it painted.

I'd recommend orange-red meself; it gives it an AdMech/Mars-y feel, which will make it look more like part of the terrain.

I was really worried how that Crane would turn out, but you have done a very effective conversion with it. Nice job, because it really has a great feel to it.

But, please, please, please, do not use John Deere Green on it, unless you plan on an Orc army with war-tractors and overalls...:D

I haven't been completely unproductive but I don't have much to show. Some more progress on the Mars table and a Grand Master and his retinue of Grey Knight Terminators.

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n34/Codsticker/TablePicAMar30.jpg
I'm the process of adding sunken rivets to the steel border.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n34/Codsticker/TableBMar30.jpg
The Grey Knights have been sprayed Grey, washed with black and then had another coat of codex grey added. Eventually they will be worked up to look like the ones on the first page.

Guess what??? It's late October which means I will have some time and energy for that hobby type stuff again.

Over the summer I finished off the Grand Master and his retinue for Astronomi-con Winnepeg. The Grand Master managed to be part of a three-way tie for favourite mini as voted on by the participants. The Army's lack lustre Tournament performance was 2-4-0 but was a lot of fun to play with regardless. Here's some pics...

http://i982.photobucket.com/albums/ae302/RPassingham/GrandMaster.jpg

I also have plans to build an all-Genestealer army but that is on hold until the new codex comes out. It sounds like there is a chance that Genestealers will not be available as a Troops choice. Here are a couple of test models.

I have completed a couple more Grey Knights for my DH force. I'm thinking that once the last couple are complete I will take a break from painting Grey Knights and get those terrain pieces finished (or, possibly, some Flames of War stuff).

The two on the left are completed, the justicar and GK on the right will eventually look the same.

Time for a monthly update.... I finished a unit of Genestealers for my all-genestealer army. I anticipate having to convert a number of Broodlords for each unit as well as a suitable HQ choice: a Patriarch that counts-as an Alpha Warrior (whatever that is...). I aslo continue to pick away at Grey Knights although the slow speed at which they paint-up compared to the Genestealers is unrewarding :(.

What have I been doing, lo these many weeks? Painting Genestealers of course!
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n34/Codsticker/Genestealers.jpg

It is progressing slower than anticipated, but at this time I am only just a few short of three units (15 a piece, plus a Broodlord). No work on the Broodlords yet- they will be converted from badly painted Warriors.

Codsticker

The Stealers are looking class mate, especially for the old Banana-claw models.

The Warrior Prime is going to be a bid odd in that army though, since he can't infiltrate with the Stealers. Any ideas how you'll use him? I guess he could just be a "sniper" or something...

Codsticker
04-03-2010, 03:47
I am not sure how I am goping to do it. I am actually thinking of going with a Tervigon converted up form an old Carnifex. I got a bit of a discussion going (lots of opinions) in my Army List thread (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=247543).

McMullet
04-03-2010, 13:56
I'll post my thoughts here, since the idea of me replying to a thread in the Tactics part of the forum is laughable...

I think the Tervigon as some sort of brood mother/brain bug/queen ant-style critter, pooping out hybrids all over the place, is a great idea. It seems to fit much better than the lone Warrior, in every way, and is definitely more appropriate than the Swarmlord.

I can really imagine the Stealer cult growing some giant monstrosity in some underground lair, then finally wheeling her out when they reveal themselves.

The Trygon maybe a bit much; I forget whether they are really thought of as Vanguard critters though. A Mawloc might fit better, since they are sneaky hit-and-run artists.

Unfortunately it also means that I have to paint up another 20 Genestealers. :(

I have finished a few more Genestealers; just 10 more to go and I am done! Time to work on somehting a little different though; as these units are going to get Broodlords, I decided to make use of some badly (very badly) painted Warriors I got dirt cheap on ebay. A little greestuff, and some bits from hoard o bits (http://shop.ebay.com/hoard_*_bits/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25) on ebay and I should have something that is passable. First I have to hack them a bit first. This first pic shows the head removed as well as the lower arms that were attached to a Venom cannon or something.

Ho! What's this? :p The Grey Knights are indee mostly white. They are worked up form Codex grey with a black wash (I beleive that the process is described in one of the posts on the first page).

When I next get around to doing some more hobby work (which may not be for a while- see below) I will try to get a pic of the converted Helhound.

hey old man, wife still got you slaving away? Last i spoke to you you only had afew more stealers to finish up how are they coming?

I am afraid she has :(. Actually, I am slaving away without any of her help at all as my work is super busy (I worked two 8 day weeks last month) which means that I have no time or energy for hobby-related enterprises. So yes, I am still 4, nearly complete, Genestealers away from finishing all the Troops for my Genestealer infestation. I have 6 Ymgarls to put together and then a HQ choice which I am still waffling on (Tervigon or Swarmlord). I really don't see myself being able to add anything to this project log until the fall.
