THE TALE OF FANTASY PAINTERS 2008-2009 MONTH 6

Hello chaps,

Blimey. Six Months!!! Exactly half way through the project. Where did the time go. Should be an exciting month with even more armies reaching the 1000 point mark.

Lots of great stuff posted again last month. Just so sorry I have had so little time to make a fuss of everyones work. however great to see the rest of you offering so much encouragement and support. I will try harder to find more time but well done to all of you showing so much commitment to this project.

This is the thread on which you post your work for month Six. (The work you have done in the month of January).
Please make only one post in the first week.

Your post should include:

1) The description and points of the unit AND YOUR TOTAL POINTS SO FAR.
2) Any additional information you care to share with us about your painting.
3) Up to four photographs of your months work and the army so far.

A WORD ON PHOTOGRAPHS

You can use up to four photographs (the maximum allowed in a post by warseer). To show us your months painting and the 'army' so far. The best size for showing your work is 640x480 (It can be smaller or you can use ‘thumbs’ which link to bigger pictures but they must not be bigger or it takes too long for the pages to load). The best thing to do is to resize them, wherever you are hosting your images, and then drag and drop the ‘img code’ directly into the text.

THIS MONTH (FEBRUARY) WIP THREAD

AFTER THE FIRST WEEK ... This thread will become the 'normal' ... comment and crit’ of others work, Work In Progress (WIP) pictures of your work as it develops, how you are getting on, seeking advice and encouragement for your ideas and your painting and generally chatting about the project, life and the cosmos.

However, please continue to only post your work for the first week. This is to give everyone a chance to post up their finished work before it gets lost amongst a sea of chat and WIP shots.

The MONTH 5 Thread will remain open through-out this week so folks have somewhere to continue to chat about the Tale.

I hope everyone has had a great months painting.
I look forward to seeing everyone’s work.

All the best
Harry

IGNORE THIS POST COMPLETELY STILL NOT UPDATED SINCE THE FIRST WEEK LAST MONTH.
I WILL TRAWL THROUGH THE OLD THREAD AND MAKE SURE I GET EVERYONE UP TO DATE ASAP

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2008 and finishing with their last post on the last day of July 2009.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.

If I do not know your Total points please add that to your post this month so I know where everyone is at.
Just for a change I am turning everyone red as they post this month.
People who are white are painters who appear to be one month 'off the pace' or were a 'no show' last month.

IF YOU HAVE BEEN REVOVED FROM THE LIST BUT STILL WANT TO BE IN THIS PLEASE STILL POST AND I WILL UPDATE THE LIST.

All the best,
Harry

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

CHARACTER: Dark Elf Assassin

BUILD/CONVERSION: This is a Mordheim miniature, Aenur, Sword of Twilight. I think this model was originally designed to be a High Elf but he looked so suitable for a Dark Elf Assassin I couldnít resist painting him up.

PAINTING: Black, lots and lots of black! Highlighted up with a mix of black and shadow grey. The boots have a brown/leather tinge to them mixed up with black/graveyard earth/bestial brown.

BASING: Same as previous months.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: This was very quick to paint due to the majority of the model being his cloak. Iím quite pleased with the way he came out and think he adds some needed character to my army.

No group army shot this time as itís hardly changed with just one model added.

POINTS: 90 points. Current army total now stands at 1220 points.

PLAN FOR NEXT MONTH: Now my points are balanced back out Iíll be painting up the Cauldron of Blood with its very haggy crew!

Harry, you need to update your painter list at the beginning. There are some entries not updated (mine for example ;)). As you copied the list to the new thread I thought I should mention it...

Have fun,

Rolf.

I know, I know. Hence the BLOCK CAPITALS at the start of that post saying please ignore this as it has not been updated for three weeks.

I am sorry everyone to be so pants. I will get it updatted ASAP

Prepare for the coming of the tide of green!

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: 10 Boar Boyz, 11 Boyz with 2 Choppa’s, a Pump Wagon and a Giant Scorpion mount (counts as Gigantic Spider) for my soon to come Goblin Big Boss

BACKGROUND/THEME: This army will represent a horde of mainly goblins led by Grom the Paunch with some 'elite' orcs and a few trolls as back-up.

BUILD/CONVERSION: The boar boyz were made from a box of plastic boyz and 10x boar riding legs from the boyz command sprue and boars, most ripped from ebay and the likes. The boyz are just straight out of the box, but with repositioning and some new weapons, mainly from ogre bits. The pump wagon is the old version. The scorpion is an old monster from GW.

STILL TO DO: Finished, except that I need to glue a big boss to the scorpion some day.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I’m so happy! I think the boar boyz came out nice, I finally found a use for the scorpion which was at the back of a dark shelf for about 4 years. Also, the snoltings are cute as hell, and the boyz worked out nice too. The boyz just need to grow some more boyz, as I need 4 more for the tale, and 14 more to make the unit complete.

POINTS: The grand total of 445!!! Got to say, the most I painted in a month.

THE (changed and updated) ARMY LIST :
(in fat, the finished stuff)

Lords:
Grom the Paunch of Misty Mountain (255)

Heroes:
Goblin Big Boss (Ulag’s Akrit Axe, 64)
Goblin Big Boss (84) on Giant Scorpion (40)
Orc Shaman (Level 2, 2x dispel scroll, 150)

Core Units:
15 Boyz (2 choppa's, 135), 11 done
29 Gobbo's (hand weapon + shields, 146)
21 Gobbo's (bows, 104)
5 Spider riders (spear, bow, shield, 100)
10 Wolf riders (spear, shield, 170)

Special Units:
10 Boar Boyz (258)
Rock Lobber (75)
Rock Lobber (75)
Goblin Wolf Chariot (63)

Rare Units:
4 Stone Trolls (240)
Pump Wagon (40)

TOTAL armylist: 1999
TOTAL painted: 1240

On a side note: I keep changing my armylist, as better things keep coming up, like the way I found a use for the scorpion, and I found a few errors (forgot the points for the extra crew on the gobbo chariot, and ofcourse I could not include a BSB as Grom already has one). The finished stuff however won’t change.

Also, while pointswise I’m past 50%, modelwise… I’m not! All those gobbo’s! AAAARGH!

For next month, I plan to only finish the unit of boyz (4 more models) for the tale, as I'm to be needing my time for other stuff... So no WIP pics.

Now, for the pictures:

ARMY: Vampire Counts
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR: 1201
MODEL COUNT: 73
THIS MONTHS PAINTING: 200 points

UNIT: Hero Choice, Sartosa Vampire ( 200 points ) with full item allocation

Painting : Very pleased with this one. My daughter picked this one to paint, and it's taken about 6 weeks to get him finished. I had 3 weeks without touching a brush over xmas.

HIGHS:
The outer cloak turned out better than I expected.

LOWS:
Trying to get the skulls to look good.
The gems are tiny and very hard to highlight.
Took me ages to work out a colour scheme that looked right to me ( especially after painting psychodelic Konrad)

And an army shot in bad lighting. This is my complete VC army so far, not just my TOFP models.

My quickest reaction to this thread as yet! Woooo!

Army: High Elves
Total points: 1289
Points this month: 200
Unit: 2 bolt throwers
Highs: The small model count!
Lows: I can't paint wood. Simple as that, hence the foundation paint base covering up an ateempted 'grain' effect.

Next months effort will be less rushed - white lions have taken to the painting table.

As an aside, fluffystuff your painting is incredible, I thoroughly look forward to your entries each month.

The Raven Host

Units: 5 chaos knights, 5 marauder horsemen, and an exalted hero.

Backround/Theme: The chaos warriors from the game Warhammer Online: Age of Reckonning.

Build and conversion: I bought the new knights and decided to make a few new changes. First all the undivided marks had to go. Then I added some raven heads and tzeentch symbols. For the horse men I did the same but used just used tzeetch symbols. Their left arms are from old mutant arms and the plastic spawn arms. My hero had his sword and mace custom built(which look pretty good for my skill level) and added a raven head on the chest armour and raven claw(ish things) to his boots.

Painting: Same as others.

Basing: Same as the others.

Still to do: Not a thing.

Highs:Getting them finished.
Lows: Having on hel of a fun January(not)

Points: 5 Chaos knights, Mark of tzeentch, full command, blasted standard pts.310(now finished)
5 Marauder Horsemen, flails, throwing axes, sheilds, musician, Marauder cheiftan pts. 103

Crikey, it is that time of the month again?

Be ready to submit and die slowly at the hands of my Druchii...

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: 6 Dark Riders with shields and full command.
Assassin with 2 hand weapons
Reaper Bolt thrower and crew

BACKGROUND/THEME: Typical Dark Elves really, under a dreadlord who wants to enslave his way across the Old World and return his people to their birth right of the land of the High Elves.

BUILD/CONVERSION: The assassin and reaper were straight from the blister.
The dark riders were typical glade rider.high elf warrioe parts with glade rider cowled heads. The standard is from the plastic Black Orc kit and the leader is formed from the Cold One Knights helmet/crest/ shield and lance. I have also used the odd high elf archer torso in there.

STILL TO DO: Just shields on the Dark Riders.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Have nearly done all my core troops, just a further 10 corsairs to do. On a low point I am not very happy with the reaper itself, it looks a bit bland.

Barack's Daemocratic War-party

Army: Warriors of Chaos (Tzeentch & Slaanesh)

Painted this month:

Riders of Unreason
5 Marauder Horsemen @ 96 pts
Mark of Slaanesh
Flail
Light armour
Musician

The Unlucky Ones
2 Spawn @ 110 pts

Total this month: 206 pts

Total so far: 1237 pts (37 pts ahead of schedule)

Modeling: Spawn are from the standard kit, though one has a guy hatching from it's back. The ragged skin was made by rolling out a sausage of GS, flattening it and then using a tool to make one side ragged, before gently pressing it into place. The other spawn has the head of a chaos warrior. The Horsemen are mostly standard (riders and horses all have helmets to represent light armour), though they all have half-cloaks from the marauder infantry set, cut up into pieces to make them follow the curve of the riders' shoulder pads and then having the gaps filled. The musician uses the drum from the infantry set and one rider also has flail and dagger arms from the same set.

Painting: Spawn are painted much as the skin of my Dragon Ogres, though with a bit of Brown Rose mixed in on the flesh, while the bone and cartilege have light flesh mixed in instead. The Horsemen are painted fairly generic humans, steering deliberately away from anything that looked to "evil". As they are Reapublicans (slaaneshi), they feature blue as the main contrasting colour to the browns.

Highs: Coming up with the idea of having a guy bursting out of the body of one of the spawn (for pics of this, see my thread in the Fantasy section) and then finding zombie bitz that fitted the image in my mind perfectly.

Lows: Running out of basic brown and then being unable to paint anything for close to a week.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: Tehenhauin, The Superduperskinkprophet of Sotek

BACKGROUND/THEME: He is mean and kills rodent, he rules the jungle.

BUILD/CONVERSION: A lot of extra stuff on the base, otherwise not so much.

STILL TO DO: Nothing, this baby is the ***** and is done!

HIGHS AND LOWS: Mostly highs, very nice model to paint =) Especially the phelmsuma on the plague.

POINTS: No idea, waiting for the new book, got to be comming to the weekend, yay!

I haven't been able to be active on the forum the last month but I would like to thank everybody for all their nice comments. I have a lot of problem finding time to paint right now (moved to new country, new school for a couple of months) but with one more unit and some jokers I might be able to pull off the months before I come back home. I think that a lot of people have realy improved their skills, and seeing so many armies appearing over the threads is realy inspiring! You are all doing a great job and it feels superb to be in such pleasent painting company! Cheers to you all.

I'm playing my second and final Joker.

My Cold Blooded veins are leading my Sigmarite Ways astray. I've really been very distracted this month. It started out promising, I had 9 of my 10 Crossbowmen (That Witch Hunter leader just wasn't ready) undercoated. 5 Flagellants, with more to come since there's little conversion work to do on them, undercoated. All within like the first week of January.

So... what went wrong? Probably a combination of things.
First I guess, I didn't feel like painting them. Surely I had the time. But A project spanning a whole year? I yearn to do different stuff (Which I have been... and so far, I've been able to keep up fairly well). Dunno, perhaps I just have to put this project aside for a while, and work on something else (Back to the steamy Jungles of Lustria).

Second, my Witch Hunter leader. I had him almost complete when I undercoated my Crossbowmen that he leads. Converted Hand Crossbow? Check. Witch Hunter cloak? Kind've check, not happy with how it looks, but it'll do. Hat? Err... something doesn't look right about it, take it off and start again. And well, I didn't end up finishing the hat until half way through January (When I got my Greenstuffing mojo back and started greenstuffing again).

Third, I had to get my Lizardmen team painted (Still doing so really) for the Bloodbowl league that started in January. I really wanted to play with Bloodbowl models, and not my Fantasy ones, so I put some effort into getting stuff done - which almost worked. First game, I had half the team done. Second game, all but 3 models on my roster. Coming game? All of them except a journeyman. I've also been converting a Chaos team out of Beastmen which has been fairly interesting. I guess I just put my Warhammer time elsewhere.

Finally, time. 2 of my nights each week dissapeared in January (And to follow). One due to Bloodbowl, another due to other gaming stuff. It's not much of an excuse, that's still 3 week nights and the week end right? But time flees in dribs and drabs.

So where to from here? Obviously I'm playing my final joker this month. So I'm still in it. What I think I want to do is, get my army to 1000 points, and see how I feel from there. That would be, finishing this months painting, and that should give me a viable 1000 point army if I ever wish to use them. The problem? February is the month of Lizardmen, my first and ever growing army in Warhammer. There's lots of new shinies coming out (I've already got my claws on a Kroxigor for my Bloodbowl team) which is sure to distract my Sigmarite ways.
We'll see how things go.

Either that or he just leads a load of dead people...

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Straight out of the box (or blister in this case).

PAINTING:
I use the Wargames Foundry Paint System so my colours will be a little different to the GW names.

BASING:
Using a mixture of bases from Back-2-Base-IX (dirt) and Foundations of War (battle debris). Undercoated black, drybrushed with all three drab colours, with the stones picked out with all three granite colours. Varnished (dullcote) and static grass added. Drilled, Pinned, Glued & Magnetised!
Have used cotton wool on the ethereal models to try for that "ghostly" effect.

STILL TO DO:
Banner on the skellies & grave guard.

HIGHS:
Army Painter - what a fantastic product!
Think that the new washes are brilliant from GW and can't recommend them enough.
The wraiths are a cheating unit really, they are just drybrushed!

LOWS:
Hate the Dire Wolf models. Hate them. Find that when you think that you have finished a colour, what that means is that you have missed a sinew/bone/muscle/skin and have to go back over it. Repeat that over the models and hopefully you will understand my frustration...

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Straight out of the box

PAINTING:
I was going for a battle hardend gyro scheme with a few repairs and patchwork. Mostly blues and white, NMM gold and silver. If anyone wants more specifics just ask and ill elaborate more.

BASING:
Well ive wanted to try some snow basing for some time now, and with the gyros fluff i think it works well and fits in to the army in its own way. Most of the base is made with cork with baking soda and glue for snow. The falling snow was made with cotton and spray snow.

HIGHS:
I've been looking forward to painting this model for sometime now, and for the most part I think it came out well.

LOWS:

ARMY: Beast's of Chaos
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR: 1105
MODEL COUNT: 18
JOKERS USED: [X][]

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT 1: 2 x Minotaurs with MOK(2/3s of one), Heavy Armour, Great Weapons = 118 Points.

UNIT 2: 1 x Tuskor Chariot with MOK = 130 Points.

UNIT 3: 4 x Gors with Extra Hand Weapons, 1 x Ungor with Shield = 33 Points.

BACKGROUND/THEME: Basically the army is a tribe of Minotaurs with a small contingent of Gors that follow them around basking in the blood of battle and feasting on the carnage that follows in their wake.

I will flesh out this section with a little more detail and some in character junk as the tale goes on and I get more ideas.

There are several themes in this army that I plan to take through every model, such as:

* Almost every model is armed with an axe, (Stupid Ungors)
* Every model has hooves, (Stupid Lion-Tuskors)
* Every model has horns, (I think I might actually be able to do this one)

BUILD/CONVERSION: The Minotaurs and Gors/Ungors are all stock but the chariot is pretty heavily converted. The Tuskors are High Elf Lions with extra fur and some horns and spikes added. The chariot body is made from an Orc chariot and a Beast chariot. The crew have had some weapon swaps but nothing too major, the rear crew man is also magnetised so that he can removed and replaced with a character if required.

PAINTING: Lots and lots of browns! But seriously several layers of drybrushing on the fur, several layers of highlights and washes for the skin and other parts. I think I am getting better at the various methods used to paint them with each model, especially the metals.

BASING: I have used resin cast forest bases with various types of plants both real and brass etched. I have created a guide for anyone that is interested which can be found here. (http://warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3055250&postcount=512)

STILL TO DO: This month was a little bit of a rush job so there are a few details that need to be completed on pretty much every model plus all the bases need static grass and plants added. However I didn't want to joker again so they meet the 3 colours, based requirement.

HIGHS: Seeing the chariot finished and put together, I really like the look of it.

...AND LOWS:Not having as much time as I would have liked to get all the details finished.

WARRIORS OF KHORNE

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: 1 Hell Cannon

BACKGROUND/THEME: Complete Khornage. This army is an all Khorne army. Built very cheaply using ‘Battlemasters’ (an old Citadel/MB games joint venture) plastics for the majority of the army with a few of the Heroquest plastics for good measure.

and a vintage armourcast Cannon of Khorne

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight from the box old Armourcast Cannon of Khorne. An exact copy of the Epic version. Once upon a time they held a licence for a while to produce some of the Epicstuff in a bigger scale.

The Chaos Dwarf is from Marauder from a similar era.

PAINTING: Painted Blood red. Washed with red and purple Inks. Some parts Black undercoat again. Metalics added. The jobs a good 'un.

BASING: Lava base. Glue bits of cork tile to the base leaving little riverlets. Paint base black then dry brush with greys then paint the riverlets in Scab red, Blood red, Blazing orange, sunburst yellow.

STILL TO DO: Nothing. These guys are done.

THIS MONTH'S PAINTING;

Prince and Liche Priest (hierophant)

BACKGROUND;These models represent the two captains of Thumu-Ra's Golden Legion, whilst the sexy lady will be used as the High Queen and Exalted Priestess of Ptra... I only got the model yesterday so I haven't thought up much beyond that.

BUILDING/CONVERSION; Nothing needed for these models, they're just too damn good.

PAINTING/BASING;The painting methods i use are nothing extraordinary and have been documented previously, but if you need any recipes don't hesitate to ask or PM.

HIGHS;Finally getting my hands on the Khalida model. She was an absolute joy to paint and the best thing is she will always have a place in any army list i write (my army list always has a heirophant with cloak of the dunes)

LOWS; No real low's this month, i always love painting characters

STILL TO DO; I still want to paint 2 additional liches, the Tomb King Thumu Ra himself, a Settra model i recently acquired, as well as a chariot or two for my characters to ride in. I'll probably post those up sometime during this month as they're finished.

Background- From the snow blurred skys swoop giant bats, cold as the tundra sky hunting for fresh feeding..
Alongside the army the frozen corpses of the fallen return, their pale sorry forms finding no rest in the deep snows.

Highs- finally finishing the buggers and getting a scheme for the zombies that seemed appropriate.

lows- painting the bats took forever!

Still to do- finish the underside of one bats wings, his fur and skin, glue the bats to their stands and repaint the edges of everything white- works better than the brown I think. Plus going to do movement trays.

Army: Dark Elves

Unit: Manticore

2 jokers played, 3 months painting -600 ish

model count -12

Highs- Finishing such a large and imposing model, it feels great to have a centerpiece to rally your motivation around

lows- Everything else. While I do like the natural dark tone of the manti, it was mostly an accident due to me not diluting the VMC Smoke enough when trying to apply a light shade. Originally, it was going to be a much grayer brown. The wings still don't look close to right, but I have no idea how to do them better. And to top it all off, I had to work on it in a hurry because the days I took off work to work on my army ended up being days I spent in bed with a horrible flu.

Army Progress - bad. Not only am I behind, I'm being forced by circumstances to work on low-model high-points units, meaning that I'll have to leave the grunt work, so to speak, to the end. I'm now about 25% of the way through my Reaper Bolt Throwers, and have a few more models ready to start painting. But soon, it's gonna be time to start assembling and greenstuffing 6 harpies to join the 4 I have primed. For such a low point cost unit, that's gonna be fun.

Army List - Still in progress. I have a draft of something, but it's not tested yet.

After months of not managing to comment properly, I think I'll start this months comment choir. Let me just say that I'm impressed by the overall level of painting and the efforts most people invest in this project. It does motivate me a lot. And I will post my own stuff next week. :D

derv - I didn't know Aenur could look that dark-elvish, well done.

Braad - What a good amount of Greenskins... and nicely painted they are. Don't get depressed, your stuff already looks like a proper army. Just keep fleshing it out, bit for bit.

fluffystuff - Awesome front look. The backside looks strange though. Might be the purple shoulder, or something with the blood on the knive... dunno. I do love the rest though. Especially face, armour and inner cloak. Very impressive overall.

Prince Sairion - I don't know whether I like the orange, but overall the models look good. That red scheme of yours is very interesting and characterful.

Dino - Nice Joker. Those Chaos models are a bit too shiny for my tastes. It is hard to make out some of the details. Otherwise they look good, especially the army as a whole.

Jimjim - Very nice Orks there. I like the combination of earthy tones with a bright green for the skin. What model is that Goblin?

Chicken Pig - I just love the Reaper model, and those WE horses fit very well with the DE parts. Good impression overall.

EmperorNorton (WE) - Well, I truely think all that work paid out. The dragon looks great! I know the WE dragon can be a serious pain in the a**, but yours is looking awesome. Very smooth greens and reds (on the Highborn), and that tail claw is ace. The Scouts are well done too, and those bases help a lot as well.

Avian - Cool looking barbarians. The earthy tones you use for painting help a lot to make them look "chaotic", the same holds for the Spawns. Well done so far!

Leonathion - Most awesome army in this Tale this year so far. Every entry from you so far made me say "wow", and this one is no exception. Great paintjob! I hope you find some time to paint on, but your army will turn out being awesome in the end, one way or another!

Doi - Another beautiful paintjob. I love that chariot conversion, very fitting for your army theme. Stuff like this makes an army special, well done.

SuavelyDunn - I like those wolves a lot, and this misty effects for the ghosts are awesome as well. Cool overall army shot, it's coming together nicely. Keep up the good work!

Digital~Punk - Cool Gyrocopter, especially with all that snow! Solid painting, and a fitting scenic base, well done.

Warlord Ghazak Ghazkull - Very orky. Is there a special theme, because of the LM shields used?

spikedog - Even though the pictures are a bit dark, the painting is awesome. Stunning work, and a good use of scenic bases. How did you do the great rust effect on the metal parts? All in all one of my favourite Tales armies so far!

Harry (WoC) - Wow. I never liked the Cannon of Khorne very much, too primitive modelwise for my taste, but your painting makes it look awesome. And that dwarf is pure hilarity with the cannonball. Ace! Also some nice work on the base, I just love lava.

StormCrow - Interesting colour scheme, and a proper paintjob as well. I'd be interested in your recipe for the metals, aspecially that one sword on the top guy looks interesting.

Bluesabre - Those metal parts look great, but the Cold Ones look a bit "flat". That the models don't fit on the mounts doesn't help either... but the rider models are jsut so much better than the new plastics. Why not try to get some of the new Cold Ones via Ebay or something alike?

nagged - Very chaosy. The pictures aren't that great, but it lloks good from what I can make out. That standard is awesome!

Knighta - Yay, a green giant! Cool looking model, even though it could indeed look better with some tattoos on it. Other than that: well done!

silverstu - I'm feeling with you on the "painting took forever"-front... even though your results are looking awesome! Those bats are totally amazing, as are the zombies. Well worth the efforts!

Astromarine - Wow, I wouldn't call it a "beauty", as it is much too badass for that. But it is definetely an eyecatcher. Great painting on that one!

EmperorNorton (VC) - Painted at last? I know when you first started that conversion. Good to see it took you only months, not years to paint it. Looking nice, including the wings and the reds.

Harry (LM) - Nice neon frog. As I said in your plog: technically good, I think it is a bit too colourful (bright green plus red/yellow/blue).

Edit: English being not my first language makes it a bit harder to express feelings properly. Excuse the amounts of "nice", "good", "well done" and "awesome" used... :D

Thanks for the comment. As for your English I wouldn't have noticed it wasn't your first language until you pointed it out. @ derv: Very nice. I swear Iíve seen this model used as Dark Elves and Vampires more than I have as its intended use as a High Elf.

@ Braad: Go on, paint 445pts again next month and show us all up again! The boar boyz are ace, though considering you own that many orc models Iím quite surprised you actually have to go and buy more legs. And it should teach you to paint all your elites first off, being over half way in to the TOFP and still not halfway through your models!

@ fluffystuff: Fantastic work, your daughter certainly picked well. How did you paint the tan-coloured cloth?

@ Prince Sairion: Nice job. I can sympathise with you, if a model doesnít have sculpted on wood grain I hate painting it too

@ Dino (CD): That would be right, youíve got great drawing abilities too. I could get a unit painted in the time it would take me to draw a picture as well as that!

@ Dino (WoC): Nice job, the spawn/mutant bits on the marauders is an inspired touch.

@ Jimjim: Very nice. Where is the goblin boss from?

@ Chicken Pig: Great stuff. It never occurred to me to put the reaper on a round base, but it really suits the model, maybe more so than a square one.

@ EmperorNorton (WE): The dragon lord is incredible. Surely you are happy with the results of all those hateful minutes? How did you do the yellow/brown skin?

@ Avian: Very nice, the marauders especially. No background for the models this time round? I was looking forward to some more

@ Leonathion: Ace work, youíve really done the sculpt justice. Though it took me a good few minutes to find him in the army shotÖ

@ someone2040: I would try and convince you to resist the urge to paint lizardmen so that you could stay in the TOFP, but even I much prefer lizardmen to empire most of the time. So instead Iím going to plead with you to paint both! *starts chanting* Both, Both, Both, Both! :D

@ SuavelyDunn: Very nice. I like the use of cotton for the ghostly effects. The dire wolves are quite nice too but I think the exposed muscles could do with being a darker shade of red, they look a bit too pinkish to me.

PAGE 2

@ Math Mathonwy: Too bad you have to drop out, but at least it is to paint some other models. Best of luck with your tournament.

@ Digital~Punk: Very, very nice. Iíve already expressed how much I liked the white cloth, but it really does come out well alongside the dark blues of the rest of the model. Great Job.

@ Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Nice job, very haphazard. Though I think the writing on the banner seems a bit off for Orcs, a symbol/motif may have had a better effect (not that it looks bad or anything mind you)

@ spikedog: Great job. The lion-tuskors are fantastic. How did you paint the skin/fur on them?

@ Harry (WoC): Amazing stuff once again. Now how does the stunty intend on getting that cannonball into the cannon? Muscles, magic, close his eyes and hope it does it by itself? :p

@ StormCrow: Nice stuff. How did you a) paint the purple and b) paint the bandages on Khalida? (can never find a way I like painting these)

@ Bluesabre: Nice to see Iím not the only one who had problems getting the riders to fit onto the old cold ones! Nice paint job, got anything planned symbol wise on the blank shield in the middle?

@ Kraal_Lord_of_Blood: Hope we donít have to see you go, but forcing yourself to sit through painting an army you donít like would be more hassle then it is worth.

@ nagged: Is that a Ďcuteí smiling daemon face on that banner? It may just be the angle of the photo but the eyes on it seem to suggest it. The paint job is quite nice too, the pink fleshy bits and the banner in particular. Good job.

@ Knighta: Nice job, and at least you kept his name off of a PG13 forum like this one. The skin is well done. Definitely more colourful than mine!

@ silverstu: Yay, more of one of my favourite undead armies. Loving the bats, definitely worth all the effort it took to go with a similar colour scheme to the varghulf. But Iím going to have to throw my weight behind keeping the bases brown I think, provides a nice counter to the bright scheme. Though, if possible, could we see the same model painted up with both options (or two similar models, one in each) to get a better idea of the differences?

@ Astromarine: Nice job, how did you do the black on the wings?

@ EmperorNorton (VC): Nice job, the small conversions to the Pegasus are a great touch. How did you paint the blood effect on areas such as the Pegasus eye?

@ Harry (Lizardmen): Fantastc stuff from you once again. Now have you painted the skin on this one differently? It seems a slightly different colour and has a somewhat dusty look to it (stomach area for example). That said it is still a great paintjob. Now when are we going to see something that isnít on a 40mm base? :p

After months of not managing to comment properly, I think I'll start this months comment choir. Let me just say that I'm impressed by the overall level of painting and the efforts most people invest in this project. It does motivate me a lot.

Edit: English being not my first language makes it a bit harder to express feelings properly. Excuse the amounts of "nice", "good", "well done" and "awesome" used... :D
@Everyone:
I would like to echo Darnocks comments above.

The overall standard is fantastic and the the motivation all your effort provides is great. But mostly seeing the way you guys support each other is fantastic and one of the most rewarding things to come out of this project. Thanks to everyone for getting so involved.

@Darnock: (Never apologise to english speakers for your English. we are an ignorant bunch and am an confident most of us could barely communicate at all in anothers languge. You express yourself just fine).

My Comments:

PAGE 1

@Derv : He may be a lone figure but it is a magnificent paint Job. The face, the blood on the sword , the snow on the base all executed brilliantly.

@Braad : Your boar boys are fantastic. Sooo much better than the metal ones. So much more character. I love the way you have the boars positioned on the bases starting to form a wedge as they charge. Wish I had done that to mine. Army shot looks great. One thing … I would be tempted to pop that scorpion on a bigger base.

@Fluffy stuff : Again only a single mini but a real beauty. I love the colours. Fantastic blending on the cloaks front and back. One small point. Have you misinterpreted the sculpt by accident or deign. Does the sculpted blood go all the way up to the handle? Army shot look great. You have painted a lot of stuff already! I mussed get more core choices done!
Good luck with those zombies.

@Prince Sarion : LOL my two bolt throwers ended up white all over after I tried to paint a wood grain effect with very little success. :D One of the problems with this project is you don’t have much time to practice or experiment. You have to crack on or miss the deadline. So well done for getting it done. You can always return to the wood grain when more time allows.

@Dino : Nice conversion on the Lord. Not sure that sword is big enough. Love the Blue and Gold scheme. It looks impressive on individual units but Oh my goodness it makes an impact as an army. Amry shot looking very impressive.

@Jimjim : Love the boys. The simple brown and blue trim works great. Love the banner matching the shield icons. Great work. Look forward to seeing them with bases done for the finished effect.

@Chicken Pig : Looking good. I can’t believe you have nearly done all your core troops. I have barely started mine! I am in so much trouble. I think the bolt thrower looks fine. I am not sure what else you can do with it. I would suggest an ink wash on the metal but then it would be different from the armour on the rest of the army.

@Emperor Norton : Love that Dragon. Always been my favorite of the GW Dragons. It looks great in the coffee/green scheme. A final wash with the red ink does wonders for the inside of pink mouths. Love the bases on your scouts. They are great those micro arts bases but there is still some work to do and you have made them look fantastic. Sorry you had a tough month with this … hopefully what you paint next will rekindle your enthusiasm.

@Avian : Loving the marauder horsemen. Love the naturalistic tones, love the helmet and weapon choices, Great paint job Nice conversion on the spawn. One of the beauties of the plastic kit is the opportunities it opens up for conversion work. You have really got a lot of army together there in a short time after joining in late.

@Leonatian : One of my favorite armies in the tale. The overall impact of the army is very great but the close up painting is fantastic. I love the high contrast of your painting style. It makes the minis look stunning and even though it may look a bit OTT in close up I bet it looks fantastic across the table. The only thing that is not doing it for me is the two tone bases. Love the jungle half but the parched grass is not doing it for me.

@SuavelyDunn : Love those Perry wraiths. Nice job on them. Mine were improved when I gave them a wash of a blue/green hint. Not only did it make them look a bit more ethereal and a bit less like statues but it took away some of the chalkyness. They are great but they do stand out in the army as the rest of the scheme is so tight. (Not sure what you can do about this? Unless you gave them a wash with the same wash you did the dire wolves fur collars with? Just to tie them in a bit? Might look a bit grubby for ghosts?) I have not commented much before but you’re the tight scheme of your army is very impressive and the amount of stuff you have got done already is very inspiring.

@ Darnok and Doi
Well, I'm not depressed or anything I guess. I just got to say, first months I just didn't have time to paint much, as I was working on a thesis, december was crazy-busy with work... Now january, fantastic, I never painted so much! But february I got to learn for my last exam, and then a job, new house... so you can imagine that would be time consuming.

And... I got this thing lingering in my mind. A huge project, and I want to start with it... But I need to hang on to the tale first.

@ Harry
I'm going to rebase my savage boar boyz in the same ways. Solves a lot of ranking issues, and I think well worth the effort of cutting them up again.

About the scorpion, well... I heard from people that the giant spider is on a 50mm base, so I did the same for this one. Originally I had a 50x80 base made for him, but then I also didn't have the plan on actually using it for something... I'm working on legally basing my whole army, as I had a few things that were not based properly. So I'd rather stick with it for now. But true... it would look better.

Thanks to the three of you for the good comments ofcourse!

I'll start commenting everyone somewhere later today...

Thanks.

EmperorNorton (VC) - Painted at last? I know when you first started that conversion. Good to see it took you only months, not years to paint it. Looking nice, including the wings and the reds.
Yep, took a little while, considering this was the first piece of the army I built back when we signed up for the Tale.

Edit: English being not my first language makes it a bit harder to express feelings properly. Excuse the amounts of "nice", "good", "well done" and "awesome" used... :D
I know what you mean, I have the same problem.

@ EmperorNorton (WE): The dragon lord is incredible. Surely you are happy with the results of all those hateful minutes? How did you do the yellow/brown skin?
I really wasn't happy, but I'm slowly coming to terms with the dragon. Painting it was just incredibly frustrating and painting the skin was the biggest part of that (painting the scales individually was fun compared to that!), because something went wrong.
The skin has Plague Brown (Vallejo Game Color) as the base colour, which was washed with Ogryn Flesh and then painted again, except for the recesses, with Plague Brown with a bit of Khaki mixed in.
And then it went downhill. It looked a bit too plain and since properly highlighting it would have needed proper blending skills (which I don't have) I thought another wash might do. For this I watered down Ogryn Flesh and added a little PVA. Didn't work. The stuff ran everywhere and pooled in places where it certainly wasn't supposed to. So I pretty much had to paint the skin again.

@ EmperorNorton (VC): Nice job, the small conversions to the Pegasus are a great touch. How did you paint the blood effect on areas such as the Pegasus eye?
First layer is a mix of Mecharite Red and Black Red (Vallejo Model Color, it's becoming one of my favourite paints to use), then Scar Red and Gory Red, all of which was dabbed on with a very small brush.

I hope so, too, and I think I have found something that will be more fun.
I have come to appreciate the dragon's sculpt more while painting it, but it'd probably have been better to only partially assemble it before painting.

Comments of my own are to follow. Not sure when, though.

Sorry for the delay, had these guys painted a while but only just managed to get pics done.

Army: Dogs of War

This month's painting: Felix Jaeger and Gotrek Gurnisson

This Month's Points: 425 (!)

Total Points: 1461 (2/3 ish done now)

Build: Nothing special done, straight out of the blister!

Painting: Fairly standard scheme for Gotrek, bit of fancy metallic green on the Axe, and went for a more yellowy hairdo than the usual bright orange for slayers to tie in better with the army.

Again, fairly standard for Felix, stripy pants in the army colours, and painted the sword to match Gotrek's Axe (though it doesn't show well in the pictures, there is a green area with gold border)

Highs: Finding these guys when looking through my old stuff, I was dreading doing another infantry block!

Lows: Gotrek's single eye was a pain, I had to redo it 3 or 4 times cause I kept screwing it up.

What's next: I need to base these guys still (I intend to wait until I have a bunch of stuff to do in one batch). I still have to get the rest of the Pikemen unit done. After that there are more characters to do, and I have gotten my hands on some Knights, Crossbowmen and a bunch more odds and ends.

ARMY: Tomb Kings of Khemri
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR: 1065
MODEL COUNT: 49

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: Four Ushabti (SPECIAL unit)

BACKGROUND/THEME: Nothing special yet. This is simply an army like it is pictured in the army book

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the blister.

PAINTING: Primed black. For the rest, it is the same colours as the rest of the army. Nothing new paintingwise.

BASING: Same procedure as the rest of the army.

STILL TO DO: Some details need still extra love.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Motivation did not increased. I still am eager to keep the pace, but I would like to paint something else. Nevertheless this tale gets me to an unusual practice: Normally I finish all models I paint. In the tale I got models that have tabletop standard, but are not finished by my standards. I am not sure, if I like this... :(

POINTS: 260

It is sad to see a number of people drop out this month, but it is understandable at the moment with the state of the economy. I just hope your planned armies get done over time and do you proud.

So onto the happier news, comments:

Derv: I could not possibly pull off such a dark colour scheme with such aplomb, the highlighting is very well done. I also like the work you have done on the face.

Braad: Wow, that is some dedication to paint so much. The miniatures sum up the Orcs so well, anarchic, unruly and wild. The old boarboyz are so outdated that your plastic conversions ace them in every way, such character. I like the use of some Ogre Kingdom weapons in there too. Standout part for me is your work on the skin on the drum.

Fluffystuff: Just sublime work. The skin, the cloth, the gold (I have never been able to do gold properly) is all perfect for me. Tres bien.

Prince Sairon: Your colour scheme is really growing on me a lot, it is really eye catching. I too have painted the bolt throwers, they just do not lend themselves to any texturing at all, and in the end I settled for flat colours too. They still look great though.

Dino: A big, big points month from you. The armour screams Tzeentch to me, it is great. The Marauders are my fave entry from you this month, they just look so feral. Your detailing on the bases also adds such narrative making it look like your army is riding roughshod across the empire.

JimJim: Nice use of one of the Assault on Black reach Nobz heads. The skin and the glyphs on the banners really make these units stand out to me.

EmperorNorton: Great to see the lord atop the dragon now. You can really see that many hours have been invested in the scales and skin of the dragon, it is exceptionally smooth. A great centrepiece, and a great (albeit a pain to paint) model. The scouts are top too.

Avian: An almost classically chaotic army already, really seems like one of the Warbands of old. Smooth and consistant painting as ever. It seems like the Maruader kit is a lot of fun to work with.

Leonathion: Exceptional quality again, the crest and heart work in particular for me. I would give an arm and a leg for your hihlighting ability.

Doi: I refuse to believe how well the skin on your giant has come out. Was it lots of layering of watered down paint with the odd wash? The chariot club is a great touch as well. I also like how the simplicity of the base draws your eye to the giant model himself.

Suavely Dunn: Have never been a fan of the new Dire Wolves myself either, they just look so big and complicated. I think you have done them very well though. Great to see the Cairn Wraiths and banshee as well. In total the army looks a fearsome prospect to face.

Digital Punk: Getting the rotors to stay on during construction is an absolute 'mare. Great job all round, and well worth the effort I say.

Warlord Ghazak Gazhgull: Great sense of movement from your boars. The warpaint on the boars really makes them stand apart as well.

Spikedog: The quality and consistancy of your army amazes me. The scheme with its earthy browns and reds is great. Cracking use of the white lions on the chariot too.

Harry: That Cannon is bonkers, I never knew that such a thing existed. Congratulations on making such a big model, with a lot of sparse areas interesting. The crwoning glories are obviously the narrative and comedy lended by the Chaos Dwarf and Cannon ball, I assume he gets one of your Daemons to load the thing.

Lizardmen. I love both this and the current Slaan model, it brings back great memories of the resurrection of the Lizardmen and Bretonnians. I especially like the yellow mottling/dapples on the belly.

StormCrow:Your style really works on the TK character models, they really do look like they have just risen from an ancient slumber. Your purple is especially eye catching and well done.

Bluesabre, that fitting problem look a right pain. Top job on them though, the gold is soooo rich. Great army shot too. You are still representing the pinnacle of the Druchii for me.

Nagged: Phwooar, great work. I would never be able to use such a vast apllete of colours. But it really works, the laquered armour is not used enough on Chaos Knights.

Knighta: Yes, dig the Jolly Green One. Like Doi the skin really woks well and your additional reds/blues and yellows really catch the eye.

Silverstu: So much painting for so little points, ouch. Really great work here though. the fell Bats coluring and basing really works well, and your two colours of skin on the Zombies both unifies the unit and makes it interesting to look at. Keep it up.

Astomarine: Top work, the skin and leather of the wings is especially well done. You joined late but are doing really well, keep on pushing yourself. You have the cleanliness and style to do it.

Emperor Norton: Ooh nice Lord. You can just see the amount of work put in on the red. Very nice conversion, and really well painted. Those of you doing two armies are clearly unhinged though.

silverstu - I'm feeling with you on the "painting took forever"-front... even though your results are looking awesome! Those bats are totally amazing, as are the zombies. Well worth the efforts!

Thanks mate- I did nearly go spare- but I'm glad I pushed on. Your english is on a par with mine so I wouldn't worry- it's hard to vary the comment s when everyones work looks so good isn't it!

Doi

Thanks mate- I definitely think it was worth it but the wolves were a step too far. I see what I can do with regards to the bases- i think I'll see how it works with the movement trays- I think that will make a big difference.

Silverstu: So much painting for so little points, ouch. Really great work here though. the fell Bats coluring and basing really works well, and your two colours of skin on the Zombies both unifies the unit and makes it interesting to look at. Keep it up.

Thanks very much- whn I was doing the wolves and they were taking forever and were so little points I thought I was in trouble- hence the switch to bats! Glad you like them.

And now to my comments.. big breath..

@Derv- great take on a classic model- he works very well as an assassin. Youíve definitely caught the shadow nature of the character and his expression looks very dramatic. Excellent stuff.

@Braad- wow! Thatís a big wack of models youíve done! The boar boys look great- very raucous! I really love the blue on the banners of both orc units-lovely shading and great contrast with the greens of the flesh. The scorpion is a bit of a surprise[but a nice one] donít see many of those about and I love that old pumpwagon model- brilliant and youíve done a great job on it- keep it[even if you have to juggle abit- Iím in the same boat].

@fluffystuff- my fav vamp painter- and once again you donít disappoint! I think this is your best vamp yet[well it is my favourate thus far]- love the pale tones on this model- the shading is gorgeous and the whole scheme works really well. Fantastic!

@Ego Ninja- well hope you can make it next month!

@Prince Sairion- more wonderfully painted high elves- nice bolt throwers- very neat painting- If it were me Iíd try abit of a devlan mud wash on the recesses of the wood[were it joins other bits]- just to give it a bit of depth. Looks great through.

@Dino- well the chaos dwarfs take a lot of work so jokering them one month isnít bad at all- hope for their return next month. The WoC boys look mean- thatís a fair amount of horsies you got through! Iím really liking the blue-tinged armour Ė really carries the Tzeench theme- they are not your average warband! Lovely painting and love the basing too. Army is shaping up to be quite a glittering host- you must be well chuffed!

@jimjim- loving the orcs and goblin- the green skintones, brown cloth and blue detailing look fanatastic- great combination well executed. The green skintones are so vibrant and strong- the shading is ace. You really need to get those boys based to make the most of Ďem- looking forward to that!

@Chicken Pig- again loving the scheme- blue is great and a nice change form the usual purple schemes. Really like that assassin Ė youíve really worked the scheme well on him and the bolt thrower looks excellent- good combo on the bright metal/dark wood. And of course nice conversion work on the dark riders- great stuff mate.

@Emperor Norton- finished!!! Great stuff mate- I think thatís a great job- youíve stuck at it and he looks magnificent- definitely worth the effort there mate. And you got the scout done too- nice bases! Love the vamp on the zombie Pegasus- especially love the pale tones and the hanging-out eye! Brilliant work mate- keep it up.

@Avian- I have not commented on your work thus far- welcome to the tale firstly. And what a bag of tricks you bring! I loved all your previous conversions [the alter is genius!] and the humour you put in with the army. The painting is equal to the vision Ėvery nice subdued colours there- lots of nice browns and ochres there Ėgreat stuff.

@Leonathion- still loving your brilliant blue lizards! Nice fiery crest and nice touches on the little beasties swarming over the base. The army is looking very impressive with all itís bright colours- keep it up![oh and Iím looking forward to seeing you do the new steg!]

@someone2040- too bad- hope you can get back on track with us- but it is tricky when playing with other armies and stuff- but just think of that finished army at the end!

@Doi- no lions yet?? Only joking! Love the giant- heís a big lump isnít he? The chariot is a really cool touch- links him in with the rest of the army and Iíd hate to be on the receiving end on a hit from that! The skintone is great- nice depth and great shading- quite right to be chuffed with it.

@suavelydunn- very nice wraiths and wolves- really filling out the army nicely now- I like the consistency of colours and tones in the army and nice work on the wraiths bases.

@digital~punk DWARFS!!!! Lovely work again mate- the gyro looks a treat- the white and grey scheme is ace and I like the touches with gold, red and steel. Splendid base too- very atmospheric. Looking forward to seeing an army shot.

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull- those savage orc boar boys are great! I love the fur cloaks and the wee touches like the warpaint under the eyes of the boars. Very dynamic unit- nice repositioning of the boars- they really do look like they will run riot!

@spikedog- once again you treat us with your splendid beasts- not getting tired of that scheme at all- love contrast of the darkskin with the hooves, horns and red cloth. The chariot is amazing- great conversion- very characterful Ė adds a lot to the army. The basing is as awesome as always and youíre realm of battle board- well now you are just showing off! Looks great mate- keep it up.

@Harry- the cannon is simply a many splendoured thing- lovely rare model, great scheme, cool base and groovy little dwarf chap crewing it[although I think he has issues- look at the size of my cannon.. an analyst would have a field day!] The big frog is wonderful too- looking quite menacing with those stern eyes and sharp teeth and all. Lovely greens and bone Ė what can I say- consistently great mate- as ever!

@ Stormcrow- love the characters!! The tones you have on the armour and weapons particularly are fantastic- very rich and deep and you combine it brilliantly with the ragged cloth and bones and fading purples. Great work.

@Bluesabre- love the gold armour on those knights- really give them that noble air and sits well with the rest of the army. The shading is great- you keep the strength and brightness of the colours really well. Looking forward to the corsairs.

@Kraal_lord_of_Blood- hope you stick with us mate!

@nagged- very nice knights there mate- I think that is a great standard- neat painting- good tones- nice basing- although I appreciate painting the horse must get a little wearing. Good work- keep it up.

@Knighta- is a great, green giant[although Iím guessing heís not too jolly!] Looks great- nice way of fitting him in with the rest of your army. Good wrok.

@Astromarine- I love this manticore- is a great model and your work shows just why- nice brown and grey work- he looks like he going to munch someone! Good stuff.

@rkunisch- nice ushabti -look good, the dark skin works well against the gold of the armour and the blue details.

@Zark the damned- great to see those classics - I have themmyself- must get round to painting them. Nice work.

Thanks for comments guys.

@Darnok: The Cold Ones highlights are rather lightly drybrushed on, I figured they would be overshadowed by the riders anyway. Ive had theses guys still in their original box since the last DE Army book release, when I got them with the army deal that was going at the time. Being a bit nostalgic and keeping them as they are, I like em.

@Doi: Nothing going on the blank shield, that guys got a big banner to play with, so I figured one piece of freehand on the banner would be enough for this unit =)

@Chicken Pig: Thank you for the high praise. I probably should have dry fitted the riders before painting then made some adjustments from there on. Oh well.

@silverstu: And its a really simply recipy for the gold too. The Corsairs wont be so shiny since they're just rank and file grunts.

I'll see about making comments about everyones post this time round.........

Half way through and still we tons of fantasic work each and every month. Iíve already accomplished more work in the past six months than I probably would in a year, so thank you to Harry for setting this up and everyone else for their support and comments.

Now on to the important bitÖ

Braad: Youíve got through a massive amount of miniatures this month, well done! Your army looks fantastic already. Good luck with the gobos, youíll be pulling out your hair by the time youíve finished those!!!

Fluffystuff: Simply stunning, as we have all come to expect from you. Your entries are something I look forward to, keep up the amazing work.

Prince Sairion: More great work from the master of orange! Iíve never been a fan of the HE Bolt Throwers as they look so plain, but youíve managed to brighten them up just right. Any plans to put them on bases?

Dino (CD): A real shame not to see any Chaos Dwarves from you this month, but not surprising considering how much work you put in to them. Look forward to seeing next months entryÖ

Dino (WoC): So much going on with these models. Good work. Love the army shot.

Jimjim: Smaller units of Boyz than I would normally see. They look like quite a rabble and I like the freehand on the banner. Looking good!

Chicken Pig: Love the assassin and the conversion work on the Dark Riders. Lets have an army pic please, the army must look quite imposing by now!

EmpororNorton: Sound like youíre hitting the 6 month block, but donít worry, itíll pass! Love all your work so far. The Dragon is a lovely centre piece and the scouts look fantastic. The cloaks have one hell of a shine in the photos though Ė Testors Dullcote is your friend!

Avian: Wow. Those horsemen are nothing short of fantastic. You could see those next to Ďeavy metal pictures and they wouldnít look out of place in the slightest. Great conversion work on the spawn.

Leonathion: Make sure you spend some time painting this month, not reading your new shiney army book! Great work on Tehenhauin. I love the contrasting skin tones and work on the base. Your army shot is brilliant. Feel free to paint up that Stegadon for next month, youíll have no complaints from me!!!

Someone2040: Itís a shame to see nothing from you this month, but I fully understand what itís like to be pulled on to different projects. Your work to date has been great and Iíd hate to see you pull out at this late stage. Personally I donít care if you have to joker a couple more times during the tale Ė keep going and show us more of your work!!!

Doi: I always look forward to your entries. Absolutely love the big guy and his chariot. I think Iíll be stealing that idea for my second giant in my O&G army. What goodies do we have in store from you next month?

SuavelyDunn: The cotton wool effect really has worked well, but overshadowed by the brilliant work on the dire wolves. I hope youíre very proud of them. Iíd like to know how you painted the skin and fur. Are these dipped?

Digital~Punk: Brilliant, just brilliant. Really excellent work on the base and the paint job. Your snow effect sets the model off beautifully.

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Love the conversion work on the boars, very Orcy! Get those holes filled in on the base!

Spikedog: Everything looks so much darker this month with the different camera, apart from the reds that are almost glow in the dark! I love the uniqueness of your army and all the conversion work

Harry (WoK): What a beast! The red and gold go perfectly together and the base just sets the whole thing off beautifully. Great work.

StormCrow: Very nice. Love the gold and the dead grass on the bases. Any plans to base up Khalida in the same way?

BlueSabre: I love your work, always to such a high standard, and movement trays to boot. The gold is particularly good, what is your receipe? Looking forward to the Corsairs!

Naggec: Incredible amount of detail, youíve done an excellent job with the paint work. I notice more every time I look at these. Any plans to paint up the movement tray Ė theyíll be perfect once that is done!

Knighta: Waaaagh! Love him, the green came out very nicely.

Silverstu: Easily in the top 3 painters this year. Simply amazing work from you each and every month. Love the Zombies, and the batsÖ wow. I have to agree about the white bases, it does seem to suit your paint scheme better than the brown.

Astromarine: Very nice job. Iím not a fan of the manticore model but your one does look very nice. The skin tones are very well done. Just one small thing missing though Ė who is going to ride this beast!

EmpororNorton: Love the greenstuff work, especially the eyeball hanging out. Great work all round.

Harry: Itís always nice seeing the old classics from you. Your Lizards are coming along very nicely, although Iím getting a bit worried about the low model count. Hope you have some time off coming soon to get those rank Ďn file sorted out!

Zark: Aah the old classics. Good paint job but it looks a little thick in places (eg. Felixís face and trousers). Are you using enough water?

Rkunisch: Mean looking beasts. Set off very nicely by the background. Any chance of a closeup shot, as itís difficult to see the detail from the pic.

Unfortunately due to my laziness, school and fast pace of TOFP I have to resign. :cries: But that doesn't mean I won't paint anymore. I just need to work in a slower tempo. Good look everyone.

@Bluesabre: I forgot Derv as well. I think between you, him and Astromarine there is one hell of a collection of Druchii.

@Derv: Thank you. It is not the best of pictures but here you go:

derv – Very nice use of that model! Its always been one of my favourite elves, and never seen it as a dark one before.Great paintjob too!

fluffystuff – Great painting there! Maybe the blue on the head is a bit to blue for my liking, but otherwise I really like it a lot.

Prince Sairion – Very sweet. Nice to see you got different crew for both. Can I advise you to make scenic base for those? It would really finish them off.

Dino – Looks great! Mutations on the marauders are nice. Made them yourself, or do you get that stuff in the box?

Jimjim – Orcs is da BEST! Stil looking great there.
Now, I can’t remember… where is that head on the top units champion from? I remember seeing it before, but can’t place it…

Chicken Pig – Nice use of the glade riders. Love the look of that unit.

EmperorNorton – It may have been a pain to paint, but I think well worth the effort! Looks excellent, and a nice centerpiece for your army.

Avian – They simply looks great. Not much bad to say about those… Well, they’re ugly, but they’re supposed to be (the spawns, I mean). The bursting-conversion is cool, that indeed.

Leonathion – That’s a lot of lizards on one base. The burst of bright-lizard colours works quite nice on the more neutral base colours.

Doi – Now that’s a great weapon! Do you get impact hits with that? You should…
Only little comment I got is that the line where the head is glued to the neck is a bit obvious.

SuavelyDunn – Pfew, that army is growing fast… The little cloudy bits are a nice addition to the wraiths. Maybe the fleshy parts on the hounds could be a little bit more gory, but otherwise a very sound painting scheme on those.

Digital~Punk – Wow, the chopper is nice, but I really like what you did to the base. It gives it a bit of ‘life’. Very nice.

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull – I just noticed one of the boars is missing its tusks. But otherwise a fine unit (as I told you before in your log, I think).

spikedog – Very nice idea to use those lions on the chariot. Gave me some inspiration…
Great army so far!

Harry – The current rules for the hellcannon don’t do justice to your model. That thing should wipe out units in a single shot… Excellent paintjob!

StormCrow – Ass-shot? Well… nonetheless those are some great models!

Bluesabre – I see what you mean, they don’t sit well. But still, you managed quite ok, and the paintjob is excellent. The armyshot also starts to become quite impressive.

nagged – Very nice. Paintjob is great. May I advise you to paint the tray in the same colours? That would really complement the knights.

Knighta – That indeed a fairly big ‘un. Nice.

silverstu – So cool! Paintscheme on the bats is excellent, and I dig the way you modeled the zombies. Keep it up!

Astromarine – The manticore looks fine. One thing though, the colour on the edge of the base looks fairly unnatural and doesn’t really go with the rest… Now I can’t remember what you posted before so I don’t know what it looks on the entire army, but I think a bit more neutral colour would be better.

EmperorNorton – The subtle conversions are nice. As it seems to me the Pegasus is a newly-dead, maybe the showing bones could be a bit more gory?

Harry – Just a second, I’ll grab my sunglasses… No, just kidding ofcourse! I got to say, it’s a daring thing to use such a bright colour scheme, but you pulled it of really well!

Zark the Damned – If I looks at Gotrek’s eye, then I think Felix’ eyes could be a bit better. Otherwise, they are very nice, and your army is great and very thematic. Keep up the good work!

rkunisch – Personally I would rather finish models to my liking then rush them. Ofcourse its great if people join the tale and get along, but I think meeting your own painting standard is also important. Maybe try hanging on with a bit fewer points a month could be an idea?
The ushabti look nice though! One question, what’s the white bits on the bases? I’m not really sure what to think of those, mainly in relation to the terrain I see behind them.

That's it.

Thanks everyone, for the great comments so far!

BTW Doi,
Got 2x the starter box of 6th edition earlier on, of which I used 1 set of legs for a big boss, leaving 1. Then I bought 2 boxes of warriors up to now, and 8 extra bodies and normal legs from ebay to complete with spare bits I had, and 10 40K orcs to finish that off.
So, I had only 3 boar rider legs to start with. I bought another starter set, and 5 single legs on ebay when I just started the unit.
The last one was a bit harder to find, but when I found it, I got 4 in a go, so now got 3 spare again :p
With just 1 in a box, they don't stack that hard though, so additional sources where necessary.

Apologies for not commenting much last month as work/life pressures do tend to get in the way of the real meaningful things like painting, or the fun stuff for that matter!

Seriously, all of the armies look fantastic and I am pleased to be able to be a part of this ever growing monster (what have you unleashed Harry?). Finally I am thinking that I can have painted armies instead of playing with grey plastic hordes shoved in a drawer and not being displayed.

Anyhow, enough rambling and onto the comments.

derv - Well done on the assassin - I like the blood effect on the sword - He looks nasty & means it!

Braad - Loads of good stuff this month! I like the boar boyz best & the army is coming along well.

fluffystuff - simply beautiful. Excellent blending on the model - really special. I do like your style of painting and will look forward to seeing the zombies - any chance of seeing any test models?

Prince Sairion - like your take on the high elves - avoiding the traditional blue & white scheme has worked. Know what you mean on the high model count - will try to do the same at the next TOFP....

Dino - Good blue scheme here - like the knights especially.

Jimjim - I like the bright green scheme & the freehand on the banner - well done.

Chicken Pig - Good conversion work on the dark riders - I might just steal this one... Good army shot too!

EmperorNorton - Well done on finishing the dragon - I hate the larger models as well (I thought it was just my own impatience!) and am glad to see them finished. I do like the microart bases - they set the scouts off nicely.

Avian - Like the army & the conversions seen. Good catch up work! Well done.

Leonathion - Excellent work on TeenyWeeny (canít spell the real name) and the army is coming along very well. I hope that the steggy & temple guard have arrived!

Doi - Good work on the giant! Thatís one fast moving army youíve got there!

Digital~Punk - Fantastic work - the scenic base really really makes this model stand out!

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - Like the boar boyz - I think the warpaint on the boars makes them stand out. Looted shields as well!

spikedog - Good work! I like the colour scheme on the beasts & the microart bases. Keep it up.

Harry - Brilliant! Do you paint all the way up from tin bitz through the silvers to gold? He is going to have a problem with that cannonball....

StormCrow - Gritty painting youíve got here. I do like the effect - any chance of an army shot?

Bluesabre - Like the knights and I couldnít get them to sit on the mounts either. Army is looking brilliant!

nagged - I like them - standard looks good.

Knighta - Thatís one big Orc...

silverstu - Great painting - I like the theme & well thought out.

Astromarine - Like the work on the manticore. Simple scheme, but you have pulled it off well.

EmperorNorton - Good conversion work - like the bleeding eye effect.

Harry - Yay for the neon frogs! Good choice of colours here & great use of lichen, plants etc on the bases.

Zark the Damned - Old school felix & gotrek well painted. Great work!

rkunish - Please stick with them as they look great. I know what you mean over wanting to do something else, but we only have 6 months to go...

SuavelyDunn - I like those wolves a lot, and this misty effects for the ghosts are awesome as well. Cool overall army shot, it's coming together nicely. Keep up the good work!

Thanks!

@ SuavelyDunn: Very nice. I like the use of cotton for the ghostly effects. The dire wolves are quite nice too but I think the exposed muscles could do with being a darker shade of red, they look a bit too pinkish to me.

Have decided to go back over the army (probably after I have finished all the models) and add some blood effects. I have been thinking a red/brown ink mix should do it.

Might look a bit grubby for ghosts?) I have not commented much before but youíre the tight scheme of your army is very impressive and the amount of stuff you have got done already is very inspiring.

I know what you mean over the green wash. I tried several times but never seemed to get it quite right and they came out neon green (ghostly lizards?) and the dip will take them too brown & grubby. Will keep my thinking hat on (Yes Miss Sally...).

Kind words re the inspiring since you're the one that started me on this trail!

Suavely Dunn: Have never been a fan of the new Dire Wolves myself either, they just look so big and complicated. I think you have done them very well though. Great to see the Cairn Wraiths and banshee as well. In total the army looks a fearsome prospect to face.

Thank you! Hopefully my opponents will think the same & despair...

@suavelydunn- very nice wraiths and wolves- really filling out the army nicely now- I like the consistency of colours and tones in the army and nice work on the wraiths bases.

Cheers!

SuavelyDunn: The cotton wool effect really has worked well, but overshadowed by the brilliant work on the dire wolves. I hope youíre very proud of them. Iíd like to know how you painted the skin and fur. Are these dipped?

Fur was a light grey (Arctic) and the skin is a leather variant (Buff). The wolves are dipped with FAP strong tone. FAP tends to deepen the colour so they look a bit light prior to dipping.

SuavelyDunn Ė Pfew, that army is growing fastÖ The little cloudy bits are a nice addition to the wraiths. Maybe the fleshy parts on the hounds could be a little bit more gory, but otherwise a very sound painting scheme on those.

Ta! Will be making them a bit more bloody later on.

Thank you for all the comments!

Well I hope that you manage to find the time to get stuff painted each month so you at least don't have to drop out of the TOFP. Finding time for this huge project you have in mind (would squiggoth from the plastic stegadon be far wrong?) would be a bonus too.

Well now I can see why you hated painted the dragon, I'd have lost all interest in it too with the painting going awry like that.

First layer is a mix of Mecharite Red and Black Red (Vallejo Model Color, it's becoming one of my favourite paints to use), then Scar Red and Gory Red, all of which was dabbed on with a very small brush.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks

Doi: I refuse to believe how well the skin on your giant has come out. Was it lots of layering of watered down paint with the odd wash? The chariot club is a great touch as well. I also like how the simplicity of the base draws your eye to the giant model himself.

The skin actually ended up surprisingly easy to paint considering how well it has turned out. I had to write it down myself so I remembered it for my next giant so here you go:
Tallarn Flesh basecoat
Ogryn Flesh wash
Tallarn Flesh highlight
1:1 Tallarn Flesh/Elf Flesh highlight
1:2 Tallarn Flesh/Elf Flesh highlight
1:2 Tallarn Flesh/Elf Flesh + bleached bone (not too much) extreme highlight (limited to the face, knuckles etc)
All bar the Ogryn Flesh wash and the final extreme highlight required two coats of paint for a solid coverage. I found using Tallarn Flesh instead of a normal citadel paint as the basis of the colours helped immensly as it gives a nice coverage even watered down (so I would have been looking at at least double the coats of paint for each colour if I had just stuck to normal citadel colours)

Thanks mate- I definitely think it was worth it but the wolves were a step too far. I see what I can do with regards to the bases- i think I'll see how it works with the movement trays- I think that will make a big difference.

A step too far? Maybe, but the finished product is entirely worth it, the colour scheme is amazing. Yeah I suppose seing them with the movement trays would probably be the way to go, since it will effect how you see them on the tabletop.

Argh, I still need at least another 2 lions (3 preferably) before I can do that lio rider unit. I think I need to get my act into gear and get some off the net already :p.

T@Doi: Nothing going on the blank shield, that guys got a big banner to play with, so I figured one piece of freehand on the banner would be enough for this unit

Any excuse to get out of freehand work is fine by me! Don't like doing it myself either

Doi: I always look forward to your entries. Absolutely love the big guy and his chariot. I think Iíll be stealing that idea for my second giant in my O&G army. What goodies do we have in store from you next month?

It's comments like these that really motivate me to keep going (not that I have any intention of stopping mind you :p), many thanks. Steal away with the idea too, that's how I got the idea for mine anyway! I'll be looking forward to seing how you do it. As for this month my plan is to get stuck into the last big block of wolf riders I've got to go. I've got 14 of them but I only need to get 10 + command to be on track points wise. If I run short of time I can swap a couple of them out and do a character I've converted up.

Doi Ė Now thatís a great weapon! Do you get impact hits with that? You shouldÖ
Only little comment I got is that the line where the head is glued to the neck is a bit obvious.

Argh, caught out! It was the one gap I forgot to green stuff and I didn't notice until I had begun painting so I tired to pass it off as a wrinkle/fold of skin

BTW Doi,
Got 2x the starter box of 6th edition earlier on, of which I used 1 set of legs for a big boss, leaving 1. Then I bought 2 boxes of warriors up to now, and 8 extra bodies and normal legs from ebay to complete with spare bits I had, and 10 40K orcs to finish that off.

With just 1 in a box, they don't stack that hard though, so additional sources where necessary.

I'd just assumed that having upteen thousand points of Orcs and Goblins would mean that you had plenty of spares :p

Doi - Good work on the giant! Thatís one fast moving army youíve got there!

Thanks for the comment. I figured since goblins aren't going to have that great of a combat impact that if I got them there quicker it would add up over so many turns into something meaningful (or mean they'd die quicker and I could play a second game!)

@ Zark the Damned: Very nice, how did you do Gotrek's beard? I've never managed to get a decent looking orange hair colour before.

@ rkunisch: Nice job on the Ushabti (though what is one the bases? skulls?). I think the main thing with painting models is that you need to get them to a stage that you are happy with them otherwise you'll start to lose motivation to paint the rest. If that does mean that you will have to drop out of the TOFP we'd all understand. Provided you start a log showing the progress on the army to your standards of course!

@Everyone who has commented on my work in the last few months
Thanks for the encouragement guys. I keep forgetting to thank people for the comments they have made on my work. Ya know, it's only today when I was reading through the latest lot on my Joker, that I truly felt how much the comments meant to me.
Quite honestly, I don't know if I would even have got this far without the Tale behind me. A few times it has been the end of the month, and I've pushed myself to get stuff done for the Tale. Without the Tale backing me, I do wonder whether I would've got that stuff done.
Anyway, I think I owe it to you guys to try and get back on track. So as a personal resolution, I'm going to try and paint at least 2 Empire guys for every other thing I paint/spend time converting. Not saying it's going to see me through to get enough points, but hopefully, it'll see me through getting more of my Sigmarites done.

silverstu - Great painting - I like the theme & well thought out.

Cheers mate- appreciate it.

Yeah -I like the effect I'm getting- but the wolves where taking ages and none of them are finished yet. The pressure of time meant they had to be put on the back burner for a bit- hopefully i'll get back to them when I have more time. I'm interested to see how the movement tray work out[plus it makes carting the buggers about to photograph alot more easier!

ONly joshing with the lions- you still have plenty of time- my trouble unit is my planned black knights- lots of greenstuffing so they are put off till the summer I reckon. But you are flying along rightly with your gobbos- I think the lion riders will be a great centre piece unit when you get them done.;)

@derv: Ah, I love this model. :D A sword swap may have increased the dark elf look, but a fine mini nonetheless

@Braad: A lot of minis painted. Well done.

@fluffystuff: Great model! Really impressive.

@Prince Sairio: Solid work, but I would give the wood another try. ;)

@Dino: Good overall look for the army, but I still think the colour scheme is too intense.

@Jimjim: Nice paintjob.

@Chicken Pig: Fantastic minis! The colour scheme works really very well.

@Emperor Norton: Solid paintwork. I do not like the rider model, but that is just personal taste

@Avian: Very nice models and I draw my hat before you. It is really impressive that you managed to get your minis up-to-date while entering the tale as late as you did.

@Leonathion: Good paintjob. Your army looks very nice.

@Doi: Nice idea with the club. Too big a contrast between the different parts of the flesh for me.

@SuavelyDunn: And again your minis look incredible! Very nice indeed.

@Digital~Punk: You invested a lot of small details and it pays! The model looks great.

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Solid paintwork.

@spikedog: Good paintjob. Especially the army shot looks good. BTW the base is one of the those GW boards, isn't it?

@Harry: As good as ever. The model really fits the style of the Chaos DFwarfs.

@StormCrow: Nice commanders! I am still wondering how I will paint the staff. You have an interesting approach, but personally I do not like how the red contrasts.

@Bluesabre: Great models. Is there a reason why you make them six models wide (instead of the usual five)?

@nagged: Good looking unit. On the picture the standard looks really great.

@Knighta: Not bad, but an unusual colour.

@silverstu: Yes, your scheme works very well. The bases are really beautiful

@Astromarine: The colour looks okay for me. The model is indeed difficult. I painted it once and it looks...well not as I hoped.

@EmperorNorton: Very nice conversion.

@Harry: Great looking models.

@Zark the Damned: Solid paintjob.

And now to the comments:

@rkunisch- nice ushabti -look good, the dark skin works well against the gold of the armour and the blue details.

Yes, this part worked as intended. :p

Rkunisch: Mean looking beasts. Set off very nicely by the background. Any chance of a closeup shot, as itís difficult to see the detail from the pic.

Hrrm, yes, I need to make closeup shots and yes, I need to work on the details. :o

rkunisch Ė Personally I would rather finish models to my liking then rush them. Ofcourse its great if people join the tale and get along, but I think meeting your own painting standard is also important. Maybe try hanging on with a bit fewer points a month could be an idea?
The ushabti look nice though! One question, whatís the white bits on the bases? Iím not really sure what to think of those, mainly in relation to the terrain I see behind them.

Well, that is part of the problem. My motivation is already low. If I allow myself to work until they are finished, this army is doomed. I still think it is better to keep up the pace and have a second look later.

The white bits are pale stones. My bases are made of sand and some small pebbles. Usually there are a bit fewer, but I thought it would make the bases look more interesting. The result is mixed. It does not look bad, but neither as good as I hoped.

rkunish - Please stick with them as they look great. I know what you mean over wanting to do something else, but we only have 6 months to go...

That is what me keep painting. It would be a shame to drop out of the tale now...

As I wrote above, the light grey spots are stones. And I am very positive that I will complete the models sooner or later.

Have fun,

Hi guys!

Just a quick drop-in to apologise for not being around for the past few months. Unfortunately, severe ill-health has been a major factor in my life recently, so I'm going to have to bow out of the TOFP. I'll still be checking in on the forums, and look forward to seeing everyone's fantastic work - you're all half way there... keep going! Seriously - all of your work is looking wonderful, and I look forward every month to seeing more. Hopefully there will be another TOFP sometime in the future, so I'll definately be geared up for that! Good luck everyone - keep painting!

Cheers!

Avian - Cool looking barbarians. The earthy tones you use for painting help a lot to make them look "chaotic", the same holds for the Spawns. Well done so far!
Thank you. I am very much a fan of earthy, natural tones (lots of browns and greys) and I want to carry on that trend, even though some of my units will be more vibrant (such as my Knights).

@ Avian: Very nice, the marauders especially. No background for the models this time round? I was looking forward to some more
Thank you. I actually had though out some background for my 'hatching' spawn, but in my rush to be amongst the first to post I didn't get around to it. I might write it up in my thread in the FB logs.

I can share with you something I did not write, but which I found in one of Louises textbooks I browsed through while we were on holiday (after getting sick of 'Book Without End' by Ken Follett). As Louise said it: "When a warhammer player is coupled with a psychologist, you get warhammer figures with diagnosed personality disorders."

So here is a little game of "name that disorder". First one is the one I felt most fitting for warriors of Slaanesh:

A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:
(1) has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)
(2) is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love
(3) believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)
(4) requires excessive admiration
(5) has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations
(6) is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
(7) lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
(8) is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her
(9) shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

And then the one for warriors of Tzeentch:

A pervasive pattern of social and interpersonal deficits marked by acute discomfort with, and reduced capacity for, close relationships as well as by cognitive or perceptual distortions and eccentricities of behavior, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

(1) ideas of reference (excluding delusions of reference)
(2) odd beliefs or magical thinking that influences behavior and is inconsistent with subcultural norms (e.g., superstitiousness, belief in clairvoyance, telepathy, or "sixth sense"; in children and adolescents, bizarre fantasies or preoccupations)
(3) unusual perceptual experiences, including bodily illusions
(4) odd thinking and speech (e.g., vague, circumstantial, metaphorical, overelaborate, or stereotyped)
(5) suspiciousness or paranoid ideation
(6) inappropriate or constricted affect
(7) behavior or appearance that is odd, eccentric, or peculiar
(8) lack of close friends or confidants other than first-degree relatives
(9) excessive social anxiety that does not diminish with familiarity and tends to be associated with paranoid fears rather than negative judgments about self

Thank you, thank you. Most of the really expensive models are done now, though, and I'm not looking forward to painting 20 Marauder infantry for a grand total of 128 pts in march. At least I know they will look nice when I am done.

Avian: An almost classically chaotic army already, really seems like one of the Warbands of old. Smooth and consistant painting as ever. It seems like the Maruader kit is a lot of fun to work with.
Yeah, the horsemen kit is one of those that is a joy to work with and though there are heaps of fiddly little details that could drive you crazy if you let them. It is great that when the number of plastic kits in an army reaches critical mass, letting you make almost anything you like by combining other kits (I haven't figures out a good way to make a plastic Hellcannon, though).

@Avian- I have not commented on your work thus far- welcome to the tale firstly. And what a bag of tricks you bring! I loved all your previous conversions [the alter is genius!] and the humour you put in with the army. The painting is equal to the vision –very nice subdued colours there- lots of nice browns and ochres there –great stuff.
Thanks. Next season I will be in from the start, hopefully letting me avoid rushing a lot of stuff at once.

Avian: Wow. Those horsemen are nothing short of fantastic. You could see those next to ‘eavy metal pictures and they wouldn’t look out of place in the slightest. Great conversion work on the spawn.
Heh! That must be because my photography skills are lacking. I'm not an amazing painter by any means, but I think choosing a balanced paint scheme is doing me a lot of favours. (It's all about adding a bit of brown into everything ;))

Avian – They simply looks great. Not much bad to say about those… Well, they’re ugly, but they’re supposed to be (the spawns, I mean). The bursting-conversion is cool, that indeed.
Thanks. The zombie kit is great to have, because there are so many bitz you can use for just about any army (possibly apart from High Elves). Spawn are cool too.

Avian - Like the army & the conversions seen. Good catch up work! Well done.
Thanks, I need deadlines or I would not get much done.

@Avian: Very nice models and I draw my hat before you. It is really impressive that you managed to get your minis up-to-date while entering the tale as late as you did.
It would not have worked with my greenskins, I can tell you that! :D

Comments for other people (I'll try to do one for each now)

Page 1:

derv: Very nice. I have that mini and it never struck me that it could be an assassin. I think the last batch very a bit too emo and this makes a nice contrast.

Braad: Looks like a proper army already. Good choice on painting a variety of models each month. I'd go nutty if I were to paint 200 pts of gobbos all at once. I too have a Goblin on a Gigantic Scorpion (converted, using parts from the old Fiends of Slaanesh) and I was a bit sad that we didn't get them in the new book, though your solution of counting it as a Gigantic Spider is good (my gobbo is a Night gobbo, who can't ride spiders, so it's no good for me).

fluffystuff: Excellent choice of colours. Highly unusual, especially on a vampire, but effective.

Prince Sairion: I think wood grain on such large surfaces would be a challenge to just about anybody. I'd probably chicken out and try a mix of washes instead and not even try it.

Dino: Knights are looking much better now. I see you have used some Daemonette parts on the marauders. How well do they go together, do you think?

Jimjim: Good choice in contrasting colours for yer greenies and nice conversion work too. Can we get a full army picture?

Chicken Pig: As I have said on your thread, I think you have a very good balance of colours (and it is nice to see someone who doesn't think that purple suits dark elves ;))

EmperorNorton: I can't get over the feather on the rider. I think you should feel very pleased with the result, even if you hated the painting. How are you going to transport it, though? It looks awfully spindly. ;)

Leonathion: Your army is looking great and looks very much on the right track to a cohesive result. I'm not sure about the sand-coloured grass on some of the bases. Is there are story behind that?

Doi: Nice giant. Good choice of colours (it's brown, I love it!)

SuavelyDunn: Very nice Dire Wolves and great army shoot. The Wraiths and Banshee are standing out a bit, though, and I'd consider a light was of the sepia colour to tie them a bit more in with the rest of the guys.

Page 2:

Digital~Punk: Very nice gyro. Often you see them looking like little inflatable rafts with the colours people choose for them, but this is turning out very well. Hope the base is sturdy and it doesn't tip over.

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Props for converting savage orcs en masse. One of the boars is lacking tusks, though.

spikedog: Very nicely painted, BUT I think the loincloths stand out too much. As the eye is attracted to the brightest colour, the groin becomes the focal point of the miniature, which is probably not what you intended (ignore the comment if this is a Slaanesh army and you did it on purpose).

Harry: It's nice to see very old minis (though I must say I think armorcast have done better than this one), but how the heck is it useable in the game with a base like that and two missing crewmen?

StormCrow: Respect to anyone who can stand painting undead in any great number. Is Khalida actually wearing high heels or are my eyes deceiving me?

Bluesabre: Very pleasing to see an army come together like that.

nagged: Hey, looking good from across the table is the main part and I think your guys do that very well. I think you pulled off the pink very well in combination with the white and you've managed to avoid having it look like candyland with axes. :)

Knighta: If I were you, I'd go over the beard again and make it slightly lighter in colour. That would make the face more of a focal point, since the skin is so dark compared to the colours of his trousers. A bright red beard looks good on anybody.

silverstu: Good choice in matching colours on the bats and varghulf.

Astromarine: I think the wings are all right, though you could have another go at the mane of the thing, to create more of a fram around the head. Looking forward to seeing the rider.

EmperorNorton: Nice conversion work on making the pegasus look dead. I don't think you can be blamed for the wings as they look off to begin with and bitz ordering is so expensive nowadays.

Harry: Weird, but in a good ways (apart from hurting my eyes, that is).

Zark the Damned: Props for yellow. How do you intend to do your bases?

rkunisch: Crop your photos, man. It's hard to see what the minis look like. :p

Page 3:

saltpappa: Excellent dwarfs. Really coming off well. You should feel pleased.

Phew. I got through them all. Off to sleep...

Well that is what the TOFP thread is here for, to get models painted up. What you could do is not paint any lizardmen up and do them in the next TOFP...

Plastic stegadon? No... has nothing to do with it.

Bah, guess it was someone else looking for side shots of the new stegadon for a squiggoth conversion. Maybe they just had a green avatar too :p

Yeah, moving models to photograph them is a pain. Went out and bought some movement trays just for that reason :D

ONly joshing with the lions- you still have plenty of time- my trouble unit is my planned black knights- lots of greenstuffing so they are put off till the summer I reckon. But you are flying along rightly with your gobbos- I think the lion riders will be a great centre piece unit when you get them done.

Well someone has to keep on my back about them :p. You made me assemble (but not gap fill) the lions I had sitting there from the HE chariot yesterday. You don't realise how big they are until they sit next to a gobbo on a wolf and nearly dwarf it without a rider of its own :p. What have you got planned for the Black Knights? Any ideas on the base models?

@Doi: Nice idea with the club. Too big a contrast between the different parts of the flesh for me.

Is that all over or just certain sections. I know there are some sections where it is a bit much (above the stomach in particular) where the wash pooled a bit too heavily but that didn't become evident until I got to a finished skin as it got a lot lighter with the highlights.

As I wrote above, the light grey spots are stones. And I am very positive that I will complete the models sooner or later.

Well I was close, some of them on the 3rd Ushabti from the left looked to have black spots in what look to be eye positions.

Cheers!

All better now I hope? Sorry to see you drop out but I look forward to seeing you with us in the next TOFP

A good read, written by you or otherwise, is still a good read nevertheless. I think (4) for the Tzeentch one is particularily fitting.

Doi: Nice giant. Good choice of colours (it's brown, I love it!)

I thought you might like the colours. No Burnt Umber though :p

@ Zujara: Too bad the dog got to your giant, looking forward to seeing it next month

Bah, guess it was someone else looking for side shots of the new stegadon for a squiggoth conversion. Maybe they just had a green avatar too :p

You're mixing things up.
I've been talking about squiggoth's indeed, and also asked for a side-shot of the stegadon as I was interested in how the back of the creature looked like (anatomically, it seemed a bit weird). They are however totally unrelated to each other.
Still, the first is on my wishlist, the second might be there too some day.
I am, however, more or less done working on rules for a fantasy squiggoth. I'll consult people here soon to have them checked for errors and stuff.

Woohoo, 4 boyz done! 1 to go to finish this months bit...

@ Avain
Well... The next few months I got to paint 66 core goblins, a gobbo chariot and 2 big bosses... So far the good planning bit.

Well nice to hear I'm good for something!:p
The black knights conversion- the base models aren't that exciting- the graveguard kit, spears from the skellie sprue and horses and skellie legs from the original skeleton army set. The main thing is I want to add robes and armour to the legs of the horsemen. Plus the horses I want to have tattered cloth and armour- fill them out abit more and tie them in with the riders. A lot of sculpting- hence I'm not in a rush to start 'em!:D

Playing my second Joker. The late delivery on my eBay order and redecorating my flat means that I didn't quite finished all of the unit before I went on holiday. But if it is OK, I'll do a double post next month - the finished Swordsmen + Halbediers and 200pts of artillery with 2 Great Cannons and buy back this Joker.

Well I guess I have got things I bit messed up then. Though I'm sure I was reading about someone wanting to make a squiggoth out of it. In any case I'm interested in seeing what you've come up with for rules. The only other 40K to fantasy rule cross over I can remember seeing was the big wooden gargant they made for Orcs in the legendary battles battle report in last years white dwarf at some point.

I put my dark rider conversions off until the last minute with my DE last year because I was dreading all of the GS work and I only managed to get them finished up 4 days before the first working month for this TOFP started! So to avoid making the same mistake yourself and losing a month where you are under no obligation to paint anything you might want to start now. Don't know if I've learnt my lesson or not. I'm still putting my lion riders conversions off :p

@ GalenArtorius: Looking forward to seeing 400pts of Empire next month!

Great work everybody! Much good stuff!!

For those of you who asked: The head on the orc boss is from the time when command group parts was in metal...so late 5th ed Orc Boyz box set.. And the Goblin big boss is from 5th edition (or older???) First models I ever bought. Set of boyz and the gobbo big boss, 11 years ago =)

Currently I'm working on a few boyz, fanatics, Night Gobbos and a Savage orc Shaman.. When those are finished, there's no more models for me to paint, as my whole O&G collection will be finished...

So far, I've painted around 2200 points, not counting magic items and equipment, and next month I will post my entire army and points value. =)

Comment time:

@Derv: Always liked that model, came with a white dwarf if in not mistaken... Looks good as an assassin, looks even better as a vampire :P

@Braad: WOW! Thats a lot of points, good job. Particularly like the scorpion as a spider, nice idea.

@Fluffystuff: Skin texture looks awesome, cloaks are great, good paintjob, well done.

@Prince Sairion: If your looking to paint wood, try the red or brown wash over the foundation paint, both do a pretty decent job at it.

@Dino: Nice drawing. Nice little conversions that make them a little more tzeentchy. Good job.

@JimJim: The blue icons stand out really well, as does the skin. They look awesome!

@Chiken Pig: The banner looks great. The blue seems to look really well on your dark elves. Good job,

@Emporer Norton: great dragon, particularly like the yellow vs green. Scouts look wonderful too.
Vampire looks quite nice so far. Definetly needs his shield though. nightmare/pegasus is cool.

@Avian: More great models from you. Love the spawns, specially the guys coming out of them. Great job.

@leonathion: great stuff, looking forward to next month. Shaping up well, keep it up

@Doi: Ah, i see he likes his grog. Giant looks great, charriot is a nice idea. Nice to see you painting skin :)

@SuavyelyDunn: Great Dire wolfs. wraiths are cool too.

@Digital Punk: Nice gyro. The base and the falling snow add the little bit that makes the model snazzy

@Warlod GG: Wow, you managed to give movement to the boars!! Great job, always thought they were a little 'plain' but you've made them look fantastic. Will have to try that...

@Spikedog: Nice beasts. Love the movement that you've managed to give them, they look great. Poses are awesome :D

@Harry: Hellcannon looks very oldschool. Looks great. Still love those bases.
Slann is great. Very frog like :) Temple guard are awesome too. Thats a lot of big stuff

@stormcrow: Characters looking sweet. The chick looks pretty good. Prolly my favorite.

@Bluesbre: Army looks great at the moment. Cold one knights are nice too. Which green is that?

@Nagged: Those are some great 'grail' knights. Particularly like the banner, very well done

@Silverstu: Like the blue tinge to your army. Looks nice on the bats, zombies look fun.

@AStromarine: The manticore is indeed a great model (and paint job) for a centre piece. Hang in there mate

@Zark: Gortrek and Felix look swell. I like it how you tied them into the army, with stripy pants and hair.

@Rkunisch: Such great models, good paint job. Any chance for an army shot?

@Saltpappa: The timbre work on you rock lober is great. Still loviong how you do you beards.

@Niibl: Carronades look great. The crew really bring those minatures to life. What the hell is that thing? a giant?

@Braad: Great looking orks, I really like the blue banner it ties the army togeather nicely.

@fulffystuff: Nice vamp, I espically like the skin colour.

@Prince Sairion: Nice looking bolt throwers, if the woods giving you trouble I might try painting a bit of bleach bone on there. With a bit of shading you give it dark ivory kinda look, just a thought.

@Dino: Great entry this month, absolutely fantastic hero conversion as well.

@jimjim: Some fierce looking orks there, great job.

@Chicken Pig: Love that assassan, one of my fav DE models and you have done it justice.

@SuavelyDunn: Nice painting on those dire wolves, the armys comming along great.

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Those boars look alive, fantastic painting/posing.

@spikedog: Great looking beasts there, the chariot is just amazing I love conversions.

@Harry: I really love that cannon, you have made me want to practice my metallaic painting. Nice HeroQuest Bloodthurster BTW those guys take me back. Great job on the slann as well, that was one of the first models i ever painted.

@stormcrow: Nice work, very weatherd looking.

@Bluesaber: To be honest I really dont like these models(personal taste) but you have done a fantastic job painting them. I really like the little pet dragon.

@Nagged: Nice knights, the banner really catches the eye.

@Knighta: Ive been waiting to see someone paint one of these guys green, great work.

@silverstu: Never a disappointment, great looking bats and the zombies are just right. I love your colour choices, keep em comming.

@Astromarine: Very cool manticore, I think the wings turned out great.

@Zark the damned: Well done, I share your woes painting eyes usually i paint them befor anything else it makes it a bit easier.

@rkunisch: Looking good, nice colour scheme.

@saltpappa:All right some Dwarfs! Fantastic work there, just love the detail. Keep it up we need more dwarfs.

@Niibl: Late posters always have an ace up the sleave and you are no exception. Great work all round but the cannon stands out in particular.

Back to painting now.

Hey folks, sorry I haven't posted any comments on people's work yet, I will come back to do this in the next few days. I'll be jokering my DE's but here's my LM post for the month which is sort of finished

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

POINTS: 235

BACKGROUND/THEME: None, just bog standard LM army that I'm finishing off painting

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight from the box

PAINTING: Red is painted same way as on Carnosaur, bone is bestial then bestial/bone followed by final coat of bone. Wood is scorched with a badab black wash & the highlighted scorched followed by end highlight of scorched/bubonic, sharpened wood at the end is bubonic with bubonic/bone highlights.

BASING: Black ink over sand, bestial brown drybrush followed by bone with patches of grass and goblin green sides

STILL TO DO: Eyes & tongue on Stagadon plus finishing the crew

HIGHS: Getting it painted, i've had a real loss of motivation the past few months so glad to have not had to drop any of my armies (so far)

LOWS: There's a new Stegadon out & although I didn't actually like it at first as I thought it was too fat (although the howdah is amazing) it's starting to grow on me a lot the more I look at it so wish I had newer ones now! Also not completely happy with the painting, especially the howdah & the bones.

NEXT MONTH: Not sure yet, most likely 3 salamanders although I may paint some troops as I think it may be painting big things all the time recently that has lost me some of my motivation

@ Jonahmaul
Looks good. Nice daring colour scheme. Gives it an aggressive look.

Got a small WIP pic too, though not for the coming month... started working on a unit of 10 wolfriders (not fast cav, more like medium cav). Finished gluing 5, and converted 3 wolves quite nicely, if I may say so. They (and the others) still need a lot of greenstuff, but its a start:

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh299/Braad-82/Warseer/wolves.jpg

The one on the left is for a normal trooper, the howling one will be the musicians (not coincidental) wolf and the one on the right is the bosses wolf.

@SuavelyDunn: And again your minis look incredible! Very nice indeed.

Thanks!

SuavelyDunn: Very nice Dire Wolves and great army shoot. The Wraiths and Banshee are standing out a bit, though, and I'd consider a light was of the sepia colour to tie them a bit more in with the rest of the guys.

Will go back and look at these later & will probably do something with a greenish wash.

@SuavyelyDunn: Great Dire wolfs. wraiths are cool too.

@SuavelyDunn: Nice painting on those dire wolves, the armys comming along great.

Thanks!

@saltpappa - I like them - great & neat paintjob.

@Niibl - Fantastic as always! Any chance of an army shot?

@Jonahmaul - Good steggy! I also lose the will to live with the larger models, I thought it was just my own impatience. What helps me is to paint some basic troops or stuff to keep me going.

@Braad - Cool conversions!

Okay, did some searching and put everything I found in an excell file.
See the results in the word file in the attachment. The first page includes all painters who showed work in this month and last month. The other all painters I could find. You might want to enlarge the second or something, but I could not upload such a big pic in the attachment... And it also doesn't accept excel files...

I gave everyone a '1' and made them green for each month in which they showed (some of) their work. I did not count multiple army painters more than once. I did not put the jokers in. I also did not check who gave up or something.

Just to give an overview of how many (more or less) are still in the running.

finally had time to post all my comment on people's work. I'll go through the comments people made to me and answer any questions later, but thanks to everyone who said anything, that's what makes this thing worthwhile.

Here we go:

@derv: You're right, that's a very suitable model for a DE assassin. I really like everything about him

except the cloak, it may be that it's only the picture but I think you kinda need to make his highlights

more extreme. Looking forward to your cauldron mate.

@Braad: Really damn well done army, especially for how fast you painted them I think everyone knows the

pain of leaving their high model low point units for last. the 10 Harpies I have to do are making me cry

(not because the painting is hard, but having to fix 20 wings with greenstuff). Really dig all you did

this month, though I dislike the sculpt on the scorpion. Sometimes the love for old style GW stuff is

just baffling to me. Still, everyone's got their own tastes :)

@fluffystuff: wow that is a fantastic vampire. First of all the model itself, but the bright, earthtone

robes and the blood stains give a wonderful effect. Love that collar. I don't wanna do VC but I can see

myself getting that guy to paint after seeing yours.

@Prince Sairion: check the blog I'm doing (check my sig) for a tutorial on woodgrain I found and some

example pics of the effect. Wood can look really good with almost no effort, it's all about color

selection. Otherwise I REALLY love your elves, they look really nice and the color scheme is inspired.

@Dino: sorry to hear your january was crappy. My Feb's going more or less the same way. Still, your army

looks really striking and impressive, congratulations. the army shot really shows how good they look as

an army, and Mrogg is just scary nasty.

@jimjim: I love how each O&G painter has a completely different look for their green skin. Yours give a

very bright, cartoony vibrant look that is really cool to contrast with the very cool blue color on the

banners, shields, and accessories. Not my usual preferred style, but you pull it off.

@chicken pig: I really like your assassin, and the bolt thrower is also really nice (except he needs

woodgrain ;)) I really try and try but I can't like those horses for DR. The half mask is just so

woodelfy to me... Still, yours are clean and well done.

@EmperorNorton: wow, that is a really awesome dragon. Sad to see you hated painting it, does that extend to the scouts as well? In any case, I love the shading on the yellow, what did you use on those areas?

@Avian: I love your chaos army, and the new entries fit right in. I really like that you went naturalistic and not overly flashy, and the spawns look really nice (actually, they're the first time I liked spawns from the new plastics). The pic of the marauders is a bit lacking in detail to comment beyond "they look nice", for example I can't find any of the blue you said you used as contrast. What I can see I really like though.

@Leonathion: You evil person, you and Harry are the main reasons I bought myself a box of skinks. Now I have to make an effort to not crack it open. That character is *spectacular*.

@someone2040: Sad to see you're getting distracted, but on the other hand it's by nothing bad, just other stuff is captivating you more. Nothing wrong with that, Harry won't show up to your door with a modelling knife and force you to paint, heh. Take it easy, do the other stuff, and pretty soon you'll find out that you're starting to get interested enough in Empire. If all else fails, just paint 1200 lizardmen in a month and rejoin the tale with them...

@doi: I saw your giant WIP last month, but I couldn't figure out what he was holding, looked like some kind of cobbled together banner. Frankly, I didn't like it. Now I see what it was, and my jaw dropped. That conversion is simple but awesome. I also really like the painting, though I'd probably apply a really really thin wash over the flesh, it seems just a tad flat.

@suavelydunn: Nice to see you share my burning hate for those wolves, and I've never even painted them, I hate them on looks alone. Yours was a good effort though, congrats. The Wraiths are simple and effective, though cheating as you say, heh. Have you thought of really really thin colored washes on them to give them different shades and such?

@digital~punk: Really cool gyro, I love the small detail of the "trails" on the blades. It looks great.

@warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: really simple and natural painjobs, which I love. The paint on the boars does a great job of breaking up the earth tones in the unit, as do the lizzie shields. Love those guys

@spikedog: Love the character of the units in general, but you're right to be proud of the chariot, it really is something else. Congrats

@Harry: Wow. I've seen pics of that beast on your wip threads, but I was always skeptical. Stupid me, should have learned to trust The Harry by now. Top of the line painting there really bringing the model to life.

@stormcrow: REALLY nice characters. I wouldn't have expected purple to work, but it does. Only thing I'd say is to paint the back of Khalida's snake staff as well. Otherwise awesome.

@bluesabre: That's a really impressive army, and the knight are awesome as usual. The pic makes the cold ones seem a bit flat, but I think it's just the pic as in the army shot they look much better.

@nagged: hehe reading your low point I seriously doubt your army choice. Like to paint them or not, the unit looks really good, including the banner.

@Knighta: Don't see any problem with the blue, a bit of contrast is nice. Really cool giant

@silverstu: I love your cold themed undead, and the new units are no exception. Congrats

@EmperorNorton: simple but impressive conversions make for a really cool pegasus. I like almost all about it except the wings which are a bit flat like you mentioned, and the rider's eye, looks a bit wideyed.

@harry: you're gonna make me run out of adjectives soon. I love that model, from the throne to the frog to the temple guard. No faults to point out.

@zark the damned: I really like those guys, especially Gotrek is really cool. I love that you gave him a hair tone that isn't the usual bright orange, this is much more natural. Also like the shading in the cape on Felix.

@rkunisch: Nice ushabti, really well done metals and an interestin skin shade unlike the normal where bone, metal, sand, and discolored skin all melt together.

@saltpappa: those are some of the best dwarfs I've seen mate, great work!

@niibl: awesome awesome models. Really nothing more to say except that. A lot of character, well painted, well converted.

@jonahmaul: really nice steg. The new ones are nice but there nothing wrong with that little beastie, mate. Also on the motivation side of things, there's always whippings.

Well, actually, for me this is one of the very few that I like... I'm not a true oldschool lover.
Other old ones I got are of course:
-snotlings (not much choice there)
-a single orc warboss on boar, though slightly converted.
-the old skarsnik, with a face-swap with a newer gobbo.
-all the old trolls. The stone and river ones, yes, they are quite old in my eyes as they already featured in the 5th edition O&G book I got from an internet auction, but they are just plain excellent.
-the old scylla (WoC) model, that I plan on using as a spawn in my future BoC army (if it ever comes).
-and the old Grom the Paunch chariot chassis, but the models on it are all current.

Though I don't really like the old style in general, a good paintjob can do a lot, as we have seen in some of the threads around here.

Finally I get around to commenting on everyones work. I'm probably the worlds slowest 1 finger typist, so this will take some time to write, so I'll try and keep it short and sweet. I'll reply to comments on my work later on.

@derv: Simple but effective, I like the base.

@Braad: Very old skool feel to the army, especially with the bright green base trim. I wish I could paint that many models in a month. Looking good.

@Prince Sairion: Very smooth and clean paintjob. Adding a bit of woodgrain and weathering would really set them off.

@Dino: Ow, my eyes hurt from all that shiny blue. Very nice units. Love the colour scheme and the bases look really nice. I'd alter the uploaded picture size though, this should stop your pics looking grainy.

@jimjim: I like the skin tones, the blue sets it off really nice, now sort those bases out.

@chicken pig: Love the bases, Maybe wash the steel with badab black then pick out the edges with silver. Mix some red with a touch of black for the blood, then add a bit of gloss varnish.

@EmperorNorton: Don't like the dragon, but love the scouts. That's a really deep, rich green tone that really suits the elves. Nice clean linework and shading. I'd use some dullcote to get rid of the shine though.

@Avian: Nice army with a very realistic feel to it. Nice subtle touches that make it look quite unique.

@Leonathion: Very colourful and I love the attention to detail, like the colours on the coral snake and the small lizards. I'd dull that gloss finish though.

@someone2040: It's all about will power. Only 6 months to go, so get painting.

@doi: Nice smooth painting on the giant, I always hate painting large models.

@suavelydunn: The wolves look really good. The natural colours suit them well and I really like their fur.

@digital~punk: Love the base, really suits the model and it looks very realistic. I also like the detail on the fabric blades.

@warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Looking good, have they been thieving off the lizardmen?

@spikedog:Very brown, and I love the chariot. The Tuskors horns really make the whole piece stand out.

@Harry: The brass looks very realistic. Nice simple yet very effective paintjob.

@stormcrow: Love the choice of colours, purple gives them a very regal feel that compliments the bone and gold really nicely.

@bluesabre: I really dislike those jungle cows, but you've done a nice paint job on them. The gold looks really good.

@nagged: Love the banner, looking good, now paint some more horses.

@Knighta:Ho Ho Ho Green Giant, sorry but I couldn't help it. Does he eat sweet-corn? Looks good and I really like the patch-work.

@silverstu: My favourite army in the tale. Really nice and original colour scheme which you've pulled off really well. Nice blending and good clean line-work, what else can I say. I don't like the white edging on the bases though, much prefer the brown. Maybe it's because a white edge just adds too much contrast to the model itself.

@Astromarine: Love the detailing on his wings. Not too keen on the blue base edging though.

@EmperorNorton : Nice conversion. Looking good.

@harry: Wow Chenoble frogs. Love the skin tones and the bases, you never fail to impress with the amount of models you paint in 1 month, to such a high standard.

@zark the damned: Very nice, love the hair on Gotrek

@rkunisch: Love the colour scheme. Just stay motivated, you're half-way there.

@saltpappa: Love the dwarves. They've got a great vibe about them, great use of natural colours that give them a very authentic feel.

@niibl: Fantastic. Great conversions and great painting. Another unique army with a great vibe surrounding them.

@jonahmaul: I really dislike that old model, but you've done a really nice paint-job on him. Looking good.

Well that took me nearly 2 hours to write ( I told you I'm slow ).

@ Niibl: Lovely stuff, your painting and conversions are as always top notch. The grouchy crew member holding the cannonball in cannonade 2 is my favourite by far.

@ Jonahmaul: Very nice. How did you do the red skin? Can't wait to see the crew

I guess what they both mean is that the grading is too sharp, that it goes too quickly from the darkest to the lightest. Thus the folds in the skin end up being very dark compared to the flat areas, where the colour is very flat. This is quite normal when painting large areas.

@ Doi - skin is drybrushed scab red, then blood red & then lightly with fiery orange & then brown inked over the top. quite simple really! not sure you'll get to see the crew, last couple of days i've really started disliking the metal one & loving the new plastic one (and i've got another metal one still waiting to be painted).

I've been very unmotivated & not doing much painting for either Tale recently but I'm hoping to sort that out over the next week or so as I'm working nights so will do a bit of my boring stuff then (basecoating, cleaning up models etc.) & get myself motivated again (that's the plan anyway!)

Well, since this month is not gonna be much of a solid entry and I already painted enough last month to get me through without harm, I decided to mainly do a bit of preperation for the next months, like greening up da gobbo's.

Also did a tester scheme on one of my spiders, to see how it works. I like it, so now the other 4 :)
Also put in a spider from my other unit for comparison.

Yeah, so glad I got my Dark Elves finished before the new models came out. Definately would have struggled to paint the Cold One Knights after seeing the new models (though I will admit to mine still being in their box, on the sprue ).

I don't need motivation so much as a lack of distractions at the moment. And of course everytime I do decide to sit down and paint I get a call from work asking me to come in :(. 8-9 hour shifts mean that by the time I get home and ready to paint it is too dark . I need better lighting in my room.

And you think that will get better during summer, when light is so good that you actually want to go outside instead of paint? :D

But that's similar to my motivation problems at the moment. The only times I usually get to paint at all are my night shifts at work. There ain't much to do, and normally I have four to six hours spare time per night. Silence, nothing to do but paint, it's pretty meditational (is that even a word?). And I get stuff done at work. :)

Not looking forward to painting huge areas of skin? Any amount of human coloured skin to paint makes me unhappy. Large areas like the giant scared me to no end . Up until the foundation paints came out I hated painting skin so much as Elf Flesh is possibly the most infuriating paint to work with

I'm doing both 40K and WHF for this years Tales, and I can't say it is impossible. Until now I'm still in, even though I profit from having my 40K army cut back to 1000 points. But I won't do it again. One WHF army it will be next year, nothing more. I want to paint my 40K Orks, but the restrictions of the Tale won't help much. Especially since I learned how much I hate it to paint infantry to a deadline. So I plan to do one army for the WHF Tale, and spend the rest of my time on those Orks, or whatever elese gets my attention. Each of those fields can motivate me for the other, and I'm not bound by too much stuff I have to get done.

I'm doing 3 armies this year & really struggling at times. I find that when you lose a bit of motivation it's so hard because you still have 600 points to paint. I'm just about managing to keep going on TOFP but I need to double post this month in TO40KP to 'buy back' a 3rd joker & keep myself in the tale. Next year I was thinking of doing an army for each Tale but think I will most likely just do one unless I get really motivated in the next couple of months (I think it's going to be a TO40KP army too so alas I'll be out of next years TOFP). Will come back & comment on people's stuff soon I promise!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to say that I really like everything that is being done here and just wanted to say 'Keep it up!'...

I'm currently doing the TO40KP with my Pre-Heresy World Eaters but I will be jumping ship for 'Season 3' (I hope there is one!) to the Fantasy painters to do my first Fantasy army in years. I have been toying with the idea of doing Empire for years and the new 3rd wave releases have sold me.

I hope to see you all here for next years tale!

Hhmm, that might be another option. Just do one army formally and then paint the other once I've got the current month's models done.

Oi! You are going nowhere :p. You were one of the main people behind getting me to paint two armies for the next Tale so I can still remain in the TOFP while I jumped ship to the TO40KP to get my Orks done. If I can struggle through two armies then so can you! :p

-voiceofthewarp

It's a very late stage as we are shortly approaching month 7, but I don't think anyone will mind if you can get up to speed quickly, i.e. use 2 jokers and post up 800 points by the end of the month.

Hmm, was intending to do some night goblins, up to about 1000 pts for now, would that be ok? Would mean less catching up for me at least, mmm, massed infantry.

Well if you have the models completed to a point equivalent to the TOFP (so 1000pts and 2 jokers, 1200pts and 1 joker, or 1400pts) at the end of the month you may be able to join. Drop Harry a PM and settle it with him.

Ow, I don't think Harry bothers at all if you run short anyway. Its more about getting as much armies painted as you can then actually trying to reach the final goal or something.

PM to Harry might be the best way.

Good that Mrs Niibl is occupied with Lost, Deperate Houswifes and all the rest.

For my part, I like to write up a list and paint to that, even if that is not the exact list I'll be using in all games - it keeps it easier to plan out what to paint. Otherwise I'll spend more time working on the painting schedule than actually painting. :(

Some nice work there, guys. Keep it up. :)

While I have written a list a couple of times I always departed from it anyway, so now I'm pretty much making it up as I go along.
For me that has resulted in two problems, first being the lack of core units which I'll have to rectify and second my supposedly Bretonnian themed VC army not having any kniggets.

I should get a unit of Wardancers done for this month, but I've somehow lost my impetus as I didn't feel like painting for the last couple of days.

Same here. The point where I had a proper plan is long gone, now I just build and paint stuff. Sadly I like building and painting the impressive things much more than some line infantry. Next months Big Bess is halfway through construction - yes, I'm really struggling with the concept of "have it done during the first week of the month". But I'm confident that I will be able to sail the treacherous waters of this Tale to the very end, and finish it.

I have loads of work to do over the next month, and I have some important adjustments to make to the stuff I already painted for a tournament at the end of March. Unfortunately I don't have such a big motivation to paint Lizardmen when I've got 3000 points done already...

I could churn out something quick and easy, but what I want to paint now is all my favourite minis for the army, and I really want to give them the time they deserve.

Good work from everyone else this month, I'll keep checking in on you. :)

Right folks, this is going to be a double post so apologies for that. This post is all feedback on people's work & then I will post on the general going ons since my last post. First of all, sorry to everyone for posting comments so late. I like to comment on everyone's work as I feel that if you've gone to the effort to paint & show us your work then we should at least take the time to comment & this is the first time I've really been so slack.

PAGE ONE

@ Derv – very nice looking Assassin. The model was originally given away with WD & then later become available as a Mordheim miniature. It is an excellent model because even though it is quite ‘plain’ it is still awesome. How did you do the blood on the sword please? I’m not usually a fan of blood on weapons but if I’m going to do this OK army I’m planning then I definitely need to learn!

@ Braad – that’s a lot of painting you’ve managed this month & some very nice stuff too, I love those old school pump wagons & I’m looking forward to seeing the rider for the scorpion

@ fluffystuff – a good choice by your daughter & awesome painting, that looks so beautiful. I asked Derv so I’ll ask you too – how did you do the blood on the knife/sword? The army is looking extremely impressive

@ Prince Sairion – a nice solid entry & very good painting again. You may want to consider some washes or graining on the wood though to make it look a little more realistic & less flat

@ Dino – nnnooooo, I love the CD’s, jokers bad! Your regular Chaos stuff is looking very nice though & a decent amount painted this month. The army shot looks incredibly blue but think this is the lighting!

@ JimJim – you have every right to be pleased with the skin because it is awesome, shields and banners are also cool.

@ Chicken Pig – that’s a lot of painting this month! All looking very nice too, really like the banner on the dark riders

@ EmperorNorton – well done for getting through the pain, I know what it’s like painting big models and just feeling like there’s no end but it’s worth it because that’s come out awesome. I love those bases for the scouts, are you going to be using more of them?

@ Avian – awesome stuff again

@ Leonathion – a beautiful lizard yet again & the base is also very nice

@ Doi – that Giant is amazing, really like the idea of using the chariot as a club too. Only less than positive thing I have to say is that the trousers are perhaps a little too brown

@ SuavelyDunn – gorgeous looking VC stuff again, I think the dire wolf models are awesome, they may be frustrating to paint but they have come out very well

PAGE TWO

@ Digital~Punk – a very very nice gyrocopter & the base definitely works, looks very characterful.

@ Ghazak – excellent boar boyz

@ Spikedog – very nice stuff again. Like the theme of having only stuff with hooves, I think the feet on the centaur models lets them down so much

@ Harry – that’s one BIG cannon & awesome to boot!

@ Stormcrow – nice characters

@ Bluesabre – nice painting but how come you didn’t go for the new Cold Ones? They’re so much better

@ nagged – they are some very impressive knights

@ Knighta – very nice looking Giant, love the alternative colour skin on it & old school style trousers

@ silverstu – beautiful VC stuff & a very nice theme on the bases, looking forward to seeing more. How are you painting & basing them?

@ Astromarine – very nice looking manticore

@ EmperorNorton – a very nice entry for your VC, I hope you find the shield! If you’re not happy with the wings then maybe try some washes over the top?

@ Harry – another cool & very bright entry for the lizards

PAGE THREE

@ Zark – is cool to see some old school characters & nice painting too, particularly well done on those stripy trousers!

@ rkunisch - Ushabti look pretty good but any chance of slightly closer picture?

PAGE FOUR

@ saltpappa – gorgeously painted Dwarfs.

@ Niibl – those cannons are absolutely amazing & some very fancy pictures to boot! Is that sneak peak a giant sized mini or normal 28mm? (looks bigger but hard to make out with nothing to compare with)

Right, and now for an update on where I am. I've really started disliking that Stegadon I painted last month to the point that it's now on ebay with my other unpainted one (see my sig). Harry - hopefully you don't make me re-paint the points!! I have managed to get my motivation back somewhat although this has currently been concentrated on TO40KP stuff as I need to get back on track to avoid going out of the Tale. I should be posting on the 1st over there which'll give me about a week to paint stuff for TOFP. I'm thinking of dropping one of my armies but not sure which one as surprisingly it's my DE's that are not interesting me atm. I think that's because I haven't really painted anything for them for months so hoping that painting some troops will get my motivation back.

In reply to other posts:

@ Doi - my original plan was to do two armies next year as I really like the amount I am getting painted through the Tale but I'm finding it really difficult to keep motivated this year. Obviously by doing one army for each I'll be doing one less than this year but I'm still not sure. I will make a decision nearer the time of the next round as it depends on how motivated I feel then & also whether I'm going back to uni to do my PhD (if I do then it's going to be intense so don't know that I'll have time to paint two armies).

@ voiceofthewap - although technically the idea is to be involved from the start & we are halfway through if you could post the current points & then keep up to date for the last 5 months I don't see any reason why you can't join in. harry's your man though (where is Harry?!)

@ Ghazak - awesome looking SO's

@ Digital~Punk - cool looking Dwarfs, looking forward to seeing tme finished

@ McMullet - sorry to lose you dude, I'll be back with avengance on TO40KP this month so looking forward to seeing you over there still

@ everyone re: their progress & plans on painting: as noted above I've currently started nothing but I am hoping to get a fair bit painted ASAP. I normally have a rough idea of what I want in the army at the start of the Tale but don't pick the order. I just decide each month based on what I feel like painting/how motivated I am etc.

WARRIORS OF CHAOS (NURGLE)

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: 7 Plague Riders of Nurgle. (Knights of Chaos with the mark of Nurgle.

BACKGROUND/THEME: I see it all so clearly now. Sister Duvallier was right. We push the lame and the sick from ourselves, because in out pettiness and conceit they provide too painful a reminder of our own mortal frailty. How pathetic we are! How vain. We drive the afflicted from our towns and cities and force them into the waiting arms of Nurgle - and why should they not seek comfort in him? … Now I see how shallow we are. Now I understand that we are all puppets of the Chaos powers. We push the desperate from us and call them dammed, forcing them to band together and wander the countryside. It is only a matter of time before they seek the comfort of Nurgle or are converted to his worship by some wandering heretic. Indeed how long is it before one who suffers from the daemon-plague of Nurgle’s rot, joins a wandering band of the mad and leprous?

Somewhere deep in the heart of the Empire such a wandering band of shunned and desperate souls make their way trough a dank and putrid swamp forced to travel by ways unseen. ‘The enemy within’.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Converted using vintage Goodwin bodies with Classic 5th ed legs). Riding Mutie horses from GorkaMorka.

PAINTING: Washes of various greens and browns with ‘camo green’ being the base colour.

BASING: Split red lentils stuck on base. Washes of various greens and browns. Gloss varnished. Patches of sand added on to and painted scorched brown then dry brushed and static grass added.

STILL TO DO: Not much. Might go back and add some sorcerers decoration to his cloak at a latter date

HIGHS AND LOWS: Great painting up these wonderful mutie horses. really pleased with how these guys turned out. Annoyed I forgot the drum.

POINTS: 7 Knights of Chaos (40) Mark Nurgle (30) Command (50) [360]

TOTAL POINTS :1082

Third guy from the left is playing an invisible drum. (I just forgot to paint up the drum. Grrrrr!)

@ Doi Ė that Giant is amazing, really like the idea of using the chariot as a club too. Only less than positive thing I have to say is that the trousers are perhaps a little too brown

Well I didn't think having lots of diferent colour on the trousers would have fit in colour wise with my existing models (since none of those have anything else but different colours of browns for clothing). That said there is a lot of variety in the browns. I might try and work in a bit of variety into my next giant though.

@ Doi - my original plan was to do two armies next year as I really like the amount I am getting painted through the Tale but I'm finding it really difficult to keep motivated this year. I'm in the same boat. As much as I would love to get to armies done in the next set of TOPs I'm not sure if I'd be able to do it while going through Uni. But that is a decision I don't have to make for a couple of months at least.

@ Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Very nice savage orcs. How do you paint the skin?

@ Digital~Punk: Great job on the Dwarves so far. How did you do the beard on the one in the middle of the front rank?

@ McMullet: Sorry to hear you have to drop out :(. At least you are going to paint all of the favourites still. Plus 3000pts is still plenty to have a nice small game with...

@ silverstu: Nice job on the wraith. Where is the model from? I don't recognise it in the slightest

@ Harry: Excellent job on the Knights. The paintjob really tops off an ace conversion. As for the invisible drum, maybe it has just rotted away in his hands :p. And with that bad joke I shall leave you be...

Well I've spent the past few weeks umming and aaring (real words I assure you..) over how to go about my next giant. I was stumped to find a way to convert it to fit the armies theme and yet not look like a different pose of the first one.

A different chariot with a different pose was my first idea but ran into a few problems. It needs to be a plastic chariot or else it would be too heavy for the giant yet the only other which to my knowledge would limit me to the Orc, High Elf and Tomb King chariots. Which I ruled out due to being the same (Orc), would reduce the uniqueness of my shaman's chariot (HE) and too light weight for a giant weapon (TK).

The idea I had was to play on the idea of this giant being 'simple' even as giants go and was infatuated with all of the little things that populated the world. Though the only thing I could think of for that would be that he got a hold of a few wolves and tied them together with a rope and swung them about like a ball and chain. But I decided that not only would it require me to convert said wolf flail to be made of reposed wolves that look somewhat realistic for their predicament but it wouldn't be a very good weapon as it would just go smoosh after one use.

Now I am presently working on something that lands in the middle of the two options above and I'll get back to you on it when I see how it pans out. What I'd like to know is if any of you had any ideas as to how to 'equip' my giant that both follows the style/theme of my army and yet looks different from my first giant?

Darnoks WHF Zombie Pirates - Painting of February 2009

Unit: Undead Sea Monster ... 200 points

Conversions

None at all for the model itself. This beast is Skarath from Hordes (http://www.battlefield-berlin.de/shop/index.php?cat=WG775&product=PIP75016&sid56B6977983A2499CAB608BB33B945735=a0b9c7071e6e33 ad40df85460cc31dbd), made by Privateer Press. When I first say the picture, I knew I had my sea monster - exactly what I wanted. Sadly GW doesn't produce a single model that fits my taste completely for this very job, so from the beginning of the Tale I watched for better options. Funny enough it was, as just last week I saw Wyrd Miniatures doing this beasty (http://www.battlefield-berlin.de/shop/index.php?cat=WG706&product=WYR3009). There might be a second sea monster coming, if that one is not too small...

The base is simple sand on the one half, and "water" made with GS on the other. Sand was glued on top of some waves, to imitate the spray at the very top, and to get more movement into the water.

Painting

The skin was done the same way as the normal zombie pirates. The horn plates are: grey drybrush washed with sepia ink, with accents in Scorched Brown and Bestial Brown. Or so I believe, as the painting was done a month ago.

The water is a grey drybrush, followed by a wash of Asurmen Blue, highlights of Mordian Blue, another wash of Asurmen Blue, and final highlights of Mordian Blue again. The spray is Codex Grey with heavy white highlights.

Still To Do

The model is not varnished yet. The water will get the usual glossy treatment. There will also be some static grass to be added.

As said elsewhere my skills in making photos of models... needs work. I hope to soon find a method to make better pictures, as at the moment I lose quite a lot of the colour depth during the process.

Highs/Lows

Painting the model was a pleasure. It was real fun, even though there were 155 horn plates to be accentuated individually. Not so funny was that I needed almost a month to get the base done, after the model itself was finished. I just couldn't get myself to do those few boring steps after such an awesome painting experience...

Cheers mate- the basing is just filler/ a layer of sand painted scorched brown then drybrushed graveyard earth and then bleached bone. Glue some woodland scenics winter field grass, add snow and the jobs a good 'un!

It is an old GW mini from the first time they did LoTR- a barrow wight- I'll be using all three classics and maybe adding in one of the new ones too {they are lovely models].

Hmm not sure about your giant arming problem- corpse cart maybe? Sharp enough to be a weapon?

@Darnok- love that sea beastie- very evocative! The waves on the base are excellent- looking forward to seeing them varnished for added effect.
That model would make quite a nice nid beastie too.. hmmm I may have a plan...

Thanks. :)

Yes, the model is an excellent start for a Nid monstrosity. Even unconverted it fits perfectly. I might get a second model just for that purpose...

@ Darnok: Very nice Sea Monster, even if it doesn't seem Undead. Looking forward to seing how the next one paints up. And is that a Firefly soundtrack you took your photos on?

Well, I know it doesn't look that "undead". It is more meant to fit into the army on a visual level, and the colours do that on their own. And I just liked the model too damn much to ruin it with a poor "undeadification".

And yes, that is a Firefly CD there. The series and the movie are there as well, and I really should watch some of the episodes again in the near future. Excellent stuff, a shame it was cancelled...

Oh I wasn't complaining, it was just some of the friendly jibing that seems to go around this TOFP, like Jonahmaul repeatedly informing me that I can't call my army 'all mounted' because I have giants on foot :p.

Now you've got me wanting to watch Firefly again. That's not a bad thing though :D

Don't worry, it wasn't recieved in any negative way. And technically your army is not all mounted... ;)

Regarding the second giant: why not do a second wolf chariot, but one caught in full action? So with crew and wolves still on it, as if the giant just got them. The wolves might need some conversion work, but there are some excellent plastic grot models in the Ork range with "I do try to cling to this shaking vehicle"-poses - check the Stormboyz, Waaaghbikes and the Stompa. Friendly players should be able to provide you with one or two of them.

In before the end of the month :P.

Vampire Elves of Tor Anthir

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNITS: 10 Ghouls, 20 zombies

BACKGROUND/THEME: Basically these guys can't be elves because the only elves would be either long dead or vampires by this point. As such the ghouls are simply drawn to the power of the vampire elves and the zombies are would be the corpses of the enemy.

BUILD/CONVERSION: for like the first time in the tale these are straight out of the box VC minis.

PAINTING: flesh is dwarf flesh with a devyan mud wash, with either thrakka green for vombies or baal red for the ghouls.

BASING: stardard sand drybrushed adeptus battlegrey

STILL TO DO: nothing thankfully

HIGHS AND LOWS: ghouls were actually pretty fun to do, zombies...not so much. Oh and i'm not pleased now late this post is.

POINTS: 10 ghouls (80) 20 zombies (80)- 160pts

TOTAL POINTS :1190 (although I can't seem to find my 400 point lord at the moment so....)

Better late than never, right? I know I am pushing the limit, but I have been sick as a dog over the past few weeks, so haven't been able to get anything up. I know it is the last day, but I have already used both jokers and don't want to fail out yet! Perhaps next months will be much quicker, and the month after that....

This Month's Painting:

Orcs of da once and future git, the 'White Skin' Orcs

Unit: 2x Orc Chariots

Build/Conversion: Straight from the box, with a little extra added, like shields and such. Also made one of the spears match that of the ones from my Spear Orc unit. My favorite, though, is the 'hood' ornament on the skull-chariot, made from something Empire.

Painting: Used the 'dark wood' recipe from a previous WD. Didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped. Orcs are done the same as my previous entries.

Basing: Nothing extravagant. Used a lot more of the yellow grass from the basing kit because, well honestly, when else would I use it? Figured this would be the best test run to see if it shows up again in this army.

Still to do: Lots. Many minor details, teeth, little corrections and such.

Highs and Lows: I hate this model. I really, really hate this model. It is not badly sculpted at all, and has loads of detail, but I really just don't like it! Too much wood? Too plain? I dunno, but I do know that something that should have only been a few days worth of painted ended up taking more time than my Spear Orcs, only because I had no desire to paint it. Or maybe I just made it too complicated. I think a few of you Orc players might be getting PMs on how to best assemble/paint this beast, because I am still at a loss!

Total Points: 160. A little shy, I know, but I was hoping the extra I went over last month could apply a bit to this one.

Anyways, enough chatting, on to the pics.

I hope my bitz box well let me use my Ork bitz for something else (it normally works the other way around) as all of my mates play weedy non-Ork armies :p. A full action chariot was the plan for my last one (well only a goblin crewman or two) but I got lazy :p. I might be able to work it in to my current idea though. I'll get pics up as soon as I can, but I'm starting Uni tomorrow.

What do people think about raising the amount of pictures per post for each entry from 4 to 6 since the image limit in a post in the MPT sections at least has been discretely upped to 6? Do we need the extra 2 or is 4 enough?

I'm under the impression that the initial reason to limit to 4, was to have everyone start with a single post.
So if you want to use 6 now, you won't hear me complain...

But is has been raised then? Good to know...

@ Harry - awesome plague riders, that old school army is looking great

@ Doi - the Giant wouldn't just have clothing from the army he 'hangs' with, for example my giant's both have patches of trousers painted to look like banners (which also happen to be banners of my friends armies!). Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for Giant number two.

I think I'll be able to manage one army if I do go back to Uni (you've got to have some chill out time after all) but two might be a little much, especially if I start falling behind with one of them. As much as I want to get my blue skinned OK army my marines are going to take presidence as I've wanted a new marine army for about 8 years since I sold my last one plus I already have most of the stuff I need so don't need to buy much for them (i'm currently thinking they're going to go on snow bases so you won't be completely disappointed! there'll be a sneak preview of them on this month TO40KP thread)

@ bluesabre - fair enough! as much as I prefer the new models you're paint job really makes those older ones look ace anyway

@ Darnok - cool looking Beatie, like the way you've done the waves on the base too. That Wyrd miniature is also cool so i hope we'll be seeing that painted from you

@ Firestorm Falcon - cool theme & some nice minis again although we could do with some slightly closer pictures...

@ Nephilim of Sin - would also like some slightly closer pictures of these but looking ace all the same (and I know from you previous stuff that the skin tones will be awesome)

@ Harry - I will sort out my armies & work out my current points total ASAP

@ Everyone - I'm only 26 but Doi is starting to make me feel old now! I'm certainly not against the higher picture count, I think it'll be especially useful for those people with horde armies who need a couple of pics for their army shot & people like me who haven't really done a lot the past few months so can photograph everything to prove where they are! I won't be posting before the 7th but hope to post by the middle of the month. I'm really trying to get back on track now & I think some troops & a low level character for each army should mean I can do that.

Okay, I wasn't bored, but since people asked for it, I might as well just make it...
Here's the complete overview of what happened during the tale, up to this very moment:

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh299/Braad-82/Warseer/tale03-03-09.jpg

We currently have 48 in, 69 out.

I did not include anyone who didn't post a single finished models. Mainly those that said they where in and never showed up.
I did grant people who didn't show up or just stopped posting their jokers. After that: they're out!

Hopefully I didn't make errors, but it was a huge puzzle! Took me like 3 hours, not including the bit I already did (counting painted models...). Therefore I can't guarantee the absolute correctness. So if there are any errors, either let me know in these threads or send a PM, and I'll change stuff.

I'll try to keep it updated from now on, as I seem to have more time on my hands than most here.

Dreaded... I could have finished a goblin in this time...

@ Braad - I defaintely posted with both my armies the first couple of months! (My Lizardman entry was 3 months worth because it was 600 points). I'm sure that i'm on two jokers with both of them now & very much still in it with my DE's (provided I get this months painted). I have 16 crossbowmen (1 month, slightly short on point), 10 corsairs & 5 shades (2 months), 5 dark riders & a bolt thrower (3 months) and a lokhir painted (4 months)

EmperorNorton
03-03-2009, 15:58
Good job, Braad, but your method doesn't consider that jokers can be bought back, it seems.
While it is right that I didn't post anything (or just WIPs) for my Wood Elves twice, as shown in your graph, I have painted seven months worth of stuff.
And I won't post anything for my VC this month because I'm 200 points ahead.

Braad

@ Jonahmaul
Changed it to month 1, 2, 4 and 6 painted for dark elves and jokers for month 3 and 5, and painted in month 1-6 for your lizards. Are you sure you are on 2 jokers for those then? I couldn't find painted work in the first 2 months which could be explained by the 600 point entry, but I believe I did find something in the months 3-6... But it could be an error due to me finding out a bit late that you were painting two armies...

@ Emperor
Well, method... I just skimmed through the pages and noted down as much as I could find, in addition to what I already had about who showed something in which months. It was a bit much though. I did find some people who posted more points, and try to correct for that, but I might have missed some/several.
I'll note you down for 7 months of painting for both armies. The next list will come as soon as we can comment in the month 7 thread.

Good that you both point these things out. Anyone else?

I'll try to keep track of stuff during the next months. That's likely a lot easier then to skim through, say, a 100 pages of random talk about mini's...

Most important though, I think its quite clear who's in and who's out. That was my main goal.

By the way, haven't mentioned this in my other posts: If I noticed someone used up all his jokers, and then had a month of not showing up, I took them out. If you're still in, let me know, and I'll update!

Lots of people have bought back jokers.
that is why I have been asking for the total points. If some one is now at 1000 points I have put them down for 5 months painting and one joker. (Even if they have actually played 2 jokers and painted 400 points another month to catch up and give themselves some breathing space).

BUT ... Your stuff still shows us who has consistently stuck to the task and painted and posted something every month.

AND ... It is only about 10 painters out of nearly 200 painters who signed up.

This shows just how incredibly hard it is to stick to this task and just how much those 10 guys deserve credit. Guys take a bow.

Nice chart Braad, must of taken you ages to sort all the data out.
Well this month will unfortunatly be my first joker , because there's no way my zombies will be finished. Batch painting 50 of the little buggers is starting to demoralize me, but I'm going to get them finished no matter what. I've still got my lord to paint anyway, so I should get a joker back when his time comes.
It's been a busy month for me ( real life ) but hopefully things will settle down soon and I can get into a good painting mood. Sorry I haven't commented on any questions aswell.

Well, I'm quite certain you posted a joker in either of those months, as I remeber quite clearly reading in your post that you did paint, but because you ran short on points in earlier months you effectively counted as jokering...
Anyway, I removed one of them. It's not terribly important which one, I guess...

@ fluffystuff
Well, the jokers weren't invented for nothing, so don't be ashamed at using them. I know all about batch painting that kind of stuff... got 50 gobbo's to do, which will be semi-batch painted (like several at a time).

Changed it.

Also started to keep track of how much points all the still-active painters got up to the current month, for everyone who posts those numbers. That'll make it a bit easier to keep track of all the jokers...

I don't mean exact, and anyway that wouldn't be all that interesting. I mean counting how many month-equivalents each player has painted, which would just be counting the number of 1s for each player on the table above, and then counting how many people had one 1, how many had two 1s, and so on. Then you could display it graphically.

For example: If you look at the table you posted, three people have seven 1s at the moment.

If you think that would be too fiddly (or if you still don't get what I mean ;)), you could email me the table and I could do it. :)

@ Braad- my Lizardmen entries have been Kroq-Gar (first 3 months painting, think I posted completed Grymloq in month one, WIP Kroq-Gar in month 2 & finished article in month 3) then 5 terradons and then a stegadon with one months joker. Hey, that means I'm only one month behind, bonus! I can joker them this month & get back on track with DE's & then next month hoprfully catch up with all 3 armies!

I don't mean exact...

Ow, I understood. I was more like sort of daydreaming... But I already graphed some stuff. Looks nice. I also put a trendline on it, but that only told me we would end up with a negative amount of painters around month 11....
But I'll just play a bit more with it, see what nice things I can make.

@ Jonahmaul
Three armies? Did I miss something?
If I'm honest, I'm losing track of what you're up to... You had Dark Elves, Lizardmen and...?
I noted down a joker for dark elves in month 3 and 5, and put that lizardmen joker you claim to have also on month 5. That okay?

@Braad - wow, that's detailed reporting & you must have the patience of a saint to work that out! Makes interesting reading from the fact that the majority appear to drop out month 2/3.

This shows just how incredibly hard it is to stick to this task and just how much those 10 guys deserve credit. Guys take a bow.

Thanks Harry, I admit I am struggling with this months entry and will now definitely finish the unit this weekend! Seriously, the only way that I am able to carry on is being inspired by the quality of the painting in the Tale and also seeing how other armies develop & grow.

Until the weekend, bye!

Thanks Harry, although admittedly painting skeletons is notably easier than what some of the other lads on your list have accomplished :p

Big thanks to Braad as well, that was an awesome little chart. Kind of sad to see only 2 tomb king painters left though :(

And I also have to pass on my congratulations to Dino and EmperorNorton for managing to stick it out with two armies each, that still boggles my mind. And congrats to Harry with three armies, even if it makes my head asplode.

Thank you Harry for being on that list =)

Not to sound as a bigshot, but I'm listed with only half my points on the chart at the start of the month 7 thread. =)

Lots of good stuff people, keep it coming! =)

Well, I figured it wouldn't be good to start running ahead of things.
Anyway, your at month 14 or something, pointswise? I could make an extra graph for next year that only includes you ATM... :D

Doi

@ Doi
Well, I'm quite certain you posted a joker in either of those months, as I remeber quite clearly reading in your post that you did paint, but because you ran short on points in earlier months you effectively counted as jokering...
Anyway, I removed one of them. It's not terribly important which one, I guess...

Oh that was the case but I thought it was month 3 I put the joker up. Not that it matters :p

I should have my entry up for the month 7 thread in a couple of days.

Argh... if only I had managed to get my spears posted up this month and then I would have been counted amongst those brave souls who havent jokered yet... argh!!

I was once like you...

I'll be buying back my joker for month 7, dont you worry....

In the attachment a graph of the tale so far. This is the number of armies that we're painted in each month in blue, and my expectations for the rest of this month and coming months in red.

Of course, the expectation values are not very accurate when it comes down to actually calculating numbers, as the number of observations prior to the expected values is quite low (6 and a 1/2) and the variation probably large (the blue blocks do not really reflect a smooth curve but tend to go below or above the black line), but I do think it will be something like this, just by visually interpreting how the line would proceed.

When the graph is complete though, it could possibly be used to make quite accurate predictions of how many of the painters will stay on course in tales to come.

@ Avain
Happy?
Or do you want more?

@ Braad: Hehe you can from now on just post me as if I paint 200 pts per month.. Will still be painting stuff and posting them in the Tale, as Im not quite done yet :P

Jonahmaul

@ Braad - sorry to be confusing, the 3rd army is a TO40KP army! Jokers look spot on, it'll be two for LM this month but then DE's will get posted although a little late (probably by about the 14th though)

Coughs. Very loudly. One has already updated month 7, not jokered once and is doing 3000 points. I remind myself of The Fall song "The Man Whose Head Expanded".

Next time I'll also post a table of just the painters who are still in... It'll be easier to distill such information from that, instead of from such a huge table with all that red...

@ Chicken Pig - shut up & get painting some Doom Eagles for me to see :p

Just checking to see if you were paying attention. :D

Sorry, buddy.

@Jonah: More tacticals and a Rhino on the way...

@Braad: Mental piece of work there, lord knows how long it took you

@Harry: No worries, I like moaning.

Month 7 is looking a bit sparse at the moment. It is still one hell of a Tale though.

Braad: Thanks for the chart, it's interesting to see how many painters we started off with, and surprisingly there are still many left in. It's great to see everyone's hard work each month.

If you are going to continue with the stats (please do, if you have the time!), could I suggest removing everyone that dropped out over a month ago. That way it should get rid of the 'sea of red' and we will all know who to pick on when we do see some red :D

Harry: Thanks for the mention.

Everyone who is still in the tale gets a big pat on the back from me - it's quite an accomplishment getting this far. Keep up the good work - we will soon have some fully painted armies, which is something I wouldn't even be close to without the tale.

well guys as this thread draws to a close i'd like to ask for your opinions on what i should do to complete my feb painting.
I need to decide on the colour for the weapons on my phoenix guard-wraiths.
Here are the options
green edged
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p180/cry-of-the-wind/Vampire%20elves/WraithsWIP3.jpg
red edged
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p180/cry-of-the-wind/Vampire%20elves/WraithsWIP2001.jpg
or left blue as the rest of the model
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p180/cry-of-the-wind/Vampire%20elves/WraithsWIP2002.jpg

Any thoughts gentlemen.

I'd go green edged- looks better- the red doesn't sit with that shade of blue and it's nice to have the contrast. Hope that helps.

@ derv
I'll certainly attempt to report every month. It will also include a graph without all the dropouts. This is quite easy to do in excell, as I can just put in a filter... No probs there.

Jonahmaul

@ Firestorm Falcon - i'm with Silverstu, the green looks the best, gives it an obsidian like look which i think fits with the miniatures really well

Grats too all who've made it so far. Afraid to say I haven't been following the TOFP other than to post my monthly updates (real life keeps getting in the way of me browsing the thread), but everything's looking great!

Probably no update (or a late one) in month 7, busy with other stuff (distracted by my 40k Orks and Bloodbowl) but shouldn't be a problem as I've done 1400pts already :D

Thanks guys, I was heading towards green myself and I'm glad you agree. I should have my unit ready for submission in a couple of days.
