View Full Version : Fisting, Choppas, and assorted other bits

Preamble: I'm primarily an Ork player. I had a log thread named after my Waaagh!! but to be honest it's pretty restrictive as a title and I'd rather just start afresh.

On top of that, I've decided to redo some of my old Marines as a way to take a break from painting tons of green. Those models started life as Blood Angels, but they're absolutely terrible - the army includes the first model I ever painted when I was something like 10 or 11, and it's absolutely shocking. Even with my mediocre skills these days I can see how bad it looks.

I decided against just going back to Blood Angels, partly because this was supposed to be about doing something new - and between the old BA and the Orks I've painted enough red in my lifetime - and partly because something else had caught my eye as being, well, ridiculously cool.

Imperial Fists! Bright yellow stubborn hardasses. What could be better?

With that in mind, I set to painting. It was pretty easy to tell why I used to get my ass handed to me as a kid - I had a sum total of 15 Tactical Marines, with an equal number of Terminators and more characters than I could have ever hoped to use. One Predator, one Rhino, one Land Raider. Wow. I figured that I might as well start with 5 Terminators, being appropriately fisty. I also knocked out a few tactical marines, including the old Veteran Sergeant model:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020421.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5901&ppuser=50103)http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020419.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5900&ppuser=50103)

I'd forgotten how monopose the old Terminators were. Thank god the Assault Termies at least looked slightly alive.

As far as Orks go, most of my stuff can be seen in the gallery. (http://warseer.com/gallery/showgallery.php?ppuser=50103&cat=500) The most recent additions are the Yella Trukkers and the halfway-complete Orange Shoota-Trukkers:

Oh, and for my birthday my girlfriend picked me up the Goff Rockers. I've finally gotten around to painting the first one:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020427.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5904&ppuser=50103)http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020428.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5905&ppuser=50103)

Cheers - C&C welcome!

Probably just my dirty mind but i laughed when i read fistings.

Should have stuck with BA but you can't go wrong with fists either. +2 Internets for using Space Hulk termies though.

Like what you've got going with the Orks with different colours.

Nicely painted clean and crisp.

Do you remember the day when you discovered that Fist was also a verb?

I wish my GF would get me the goff rockers!

My name is Daniel and i am a wargamer...

Bought the Emperor's Champion while I was down the club tonight - I rather like the model and I figured he'd make for a good Captain with relic blade. An absolute joy to paint, he went from in the blister to fully painted in a single evening. Pictures:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020430.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5906&ppuser=50103)http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020431.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5907&ppuser=50103)

And yes, Fist is such a wonderfully versatile word. The Goff Rockers are great, lovely models even if they're ridiculously slim compared to modern Orks :/

Ocid, thanks a lot :) and yeah, the old Terminators are pretty cool, they really are a bit static though. I have one somewhere with a 'borrowed' Dreadnought assault cannon, maybe I should get that done...

I decided last night that I'd start painting my Looted Wagon today. Originally I thought I'd drag it out until Tuesday and probably end up rushing to finish it off. Instead, here it is, finished off in a day:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020438.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5949&ppuser=50103)http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020440.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5950&ppuser=50103)http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020441.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=5951&ppuser=50103)

I managed to break off the original heavy bolter sponson whilst packing it up for a club night, but the storm-bolter monstrosity on the turret works just fine as a spare big shoota (it was originally a bolt-on, but since they're no longer in the rules anyway it works nicely as a plain big shoota). Ultramarines seemed like the perfect chapter to have the wagon 'looted' from - they're blue, and that's lucky ;)

I repainted the Emperor's Champ slightly as well, did some nice blue blending on his sword so it looks shimmery now and fixed some of the over-thick highlight lines. I also decided to rip off the 'DA Veterans as Sternguard' idea, so they're on the way now - need to get some Fist shoulders for them though, because I'm crap at freehanding that stuff and transfers never want to work for me.

C&C welcome, so on so forth.

Hi all,

Done a few different things recently. First off, more Orks (there's always more, aren't there):

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/SL370719.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6155&cat=500)

This is the orange Trukk squad that rides along with the Warboss. The shootas were a lovely change from the sluggas, and I think the orange worked out rather well. In their first game as a fully-painted unit they managed to destroy a bigger squad on the charge, so I'm happy with them. ;)

Speaking of Warbosses, my girlfriend had a go at one of the Black Reach bosses I've had lying around for ages and seeing the great job she did made me want to do my own. Good job I had another one spare:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020443.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6142)http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020444.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6143)

He trades off the 'cool conversion' aspect of the Kan-legged boss for the benefit of 'not having a **** paintjob'. I'm rather proud of him, probably misguidedly but there you go! I don't know if he'll actually replace the other boss, but I'll certainly field him a few times at least.

Beyond the Orks I've also picked up the Khorne Lord on Juggernaut model to try my hand at. The bastard thing must have chipped a hundred times during painting, but I got him finished up and here he is:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020447.jpg?t=1238973352 (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6145)http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020446.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6144)

As you might be able to tell, the lady and I recently picked up some basing toys including water effects, so the boss and Mr Khorne Lord up there have some amateurish attempts at wet things on their bases. I picked up some Chaos Knights too (and am very tempted to do the WoC cavalry army) as well as retrieving a ton of my old stuff from bback home, so I'm sure I'll have plenty to play with in future. Should probably finish the Orks first though (and I think I'll buy some of those new Stormboyz to replace the **** old models...)

C&C welcome, so on so forth.

15-04-2009, 23:30
Continuing the Chaos theme, here's a Chaos Knight champion:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020451.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6282&ppuser=50103)

It's not very clear from the picture, what with the shield in the way and all, but his head is the other metal option from the Juggerlord - the Daemonic looking one with the horns. I figured the shield could represent his 'Daemon' face whereas the head was his 'human' look - it worked out quite nicely. More goopy water basing and snow, too. I'm looking forward to doing the rest of the unit.

Despite the title of the log there's not been a lot of Fist love recently. I picked up Pedro to remedy this - not technically an IF, but close enough! He's one of the less intrusive special characters, too, and on top of that he was only 15 points more than the regular Captain I was planning to use.

I did consider converting him a bit, but the model's so nice that I decided I'd rather just change the paint scheme around:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020450.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6281&ppuser=50103)http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020449.jpg?t=1239838588 (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6280&ppuser=50103)

Primus here represents a bit of a change from the previous Fists - I decided to go for Iyanden Darksun highlighted with a Golden Yellow/Darksun 50:50 rather than having the mix form an entire layer, and use Red Gore highlighted Blood Red for the shoulders. I really like the effect and I think the future ones will get done this way - it's a lot less hassle and looks much nicer. I also departed from the basing of the others and put him on one of the little resin bases GW does, with more of a city fighting theme. Again, I really like it and think I'll change the rest of the Marines around to work that way.

Background wise I'm thinking of making him a Fists Chapter Master from around M39 - I don't suppose there's any background extant on what the Fists were up to at that point?

There's also a Shaggoth kicking around with an Ogre Tyrant mace who might work as Kholek (and will be cool in his own right regardless) but I'm too lazy to take a proper photo at the moment so he can wait.

16-04-2009, 12:13
Nice looking Pedro there :) Like the base too. I'm glad I bought him for you :P

16-04-2009, 12:50
FISTS! Yes please, and thank you.

Looks terrific, and its always nice to see another Fist painter on WS. I'm working on Mr Kantor too atm.

16-04-2009, 14:09
Kantor is a beautiful model, loads of fun to paint even if there's one or two fiddly little bits (his left leg can be a bit crowded, and I stupidly had him on the resin base to paint. That screw by his leg looks cool, but I hadn't considered trying to paint behind it...) I hope you have as much fun with him as I did.

Clare, I'm glad you did too :P

Just a quick one - someone in the gallery asked for a closer-cropped Pedroprimus yesterday, so here he is:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020449-1.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6309) (clicky)

I tried out the slightly modified scheme on a Tactical Marine too. I think it compares favourably to the older version (I forgot that I changed from Blood Red to Red Gore on the shoulders, which I think works wonders to stop them being too bright). Base isn't finished, but here he is:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020453.jpg?t=1239977016 (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6310)(clicky)

Stripped a bunch of stuff yesterday including an old Attack Bike - think I'll do that next. I really should start finishing off some units though :\

11-05-2009, 17:24
Welp, time for an update. I've been bouncing around between cities (which will hopefully come to an end soon, letting me spend more time sitting around painting!) so not a lot has gotten done, but here's some Grotz from the squad I finally started painting:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020458.jpg (http://warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6457&ppuser=50103)

I also figured I should finish off the Lootas, since I've had the models forever and I do love them in-game. I need to construct a Deffgun for the fifth Loota, but I've finished painting the bodies so here they are as a WIP:

I figured I'd have a go at painting some blue warpaint on them. I'm fairly pleased with the result. :D

Next on the list after the Lootas are the rest of the Grotz/Runtherd, then Snikrot and his Kommandos... and the Ogre I figured I should finally finish, and a Dark Eldar Archon I suddenly fancy painting, and the Fists Attack Bike that still needs finishing, and the rest of the Fists army that should probably get done, not to mention the bunch of Boyz that still need doing to finish off the big main squads that have been in every army list I've written since December...

Plenty to be cracking on with!

Holy updates Batman!

A month and a half later and with moving house and getting things settled in and so on not as much progress has been made as I'd like. It's also been a rather different kind of progress to what I thought I'd be doing...

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020483.jpg (http://www.warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6683)http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020485.jpg (http://www.warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6684&ppuser=50103)

First up is the Termie Chaplain which I picked up on a whim whilst ordering a chunk of the core Marine army. It's not too easy to tell on him, but change has come:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020486.jpg (http://www.warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6685&ppuser=50103)

Painting yellow was making me want to stab myself. I figured I could stick with Fists, but go Crimson instead of Imperial and it's working out much better. The deep blue and reds are so so much easier and I'm actually close to finishing a Tactical Squad rather than having a scant few models painted up. The Dread is 'finished' - he's just waiting for a plasma cannon, because I like the idea of having actual ranged weapons and AP values for once.

My girlfriend and I also stole Fold/Fist of Dorn's 'vow' idea. Hopefully I'll have slightly more regular updates and a more focused painting regimen beginning this month. In July, I'm supposed to do:

1 box Assault Marines
Ghazgkull Thraka
3 Ork Warbikes
1 Razorback

Let's see how well that goes.

e: Also, workspace shot: http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020489.jpg (http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020489.jpg)

01-07-2009, 22:03
Your dreadnaught is looking nice. I especially like the base. More like that yes? :)

04-07-2009, 21:32
Just a quick one - the Maxmini heads turned up today and I finally finished off the chap carrying the melta-gun, which means the first Tactical Squad is just two grunts away from completion. Figured I might as well put up some photos. As usual, click for bigness :D

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020490-1.jpg (http://www.warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6708)
http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020492.jpg (http://www.warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6710&ppuser=50103)

The melta-gunner on his own, with his fancy hat:

http://i427.photobucket.com/albums/pp354/W1nterborn/P1020491.jpg (http://www.warseer.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=6709&ppuser=50103)

I'm planning to sprinkle them liberally through the army - the Assault Marine Sergeant has one as well. The gf and I also picked up a Bastion today, which looks like it'll be fun to build :D

e: I should note that they're all missing left shoulder pads. I'm planning on picking up some of the metal Fist ones at some point, but I keep spending my money on stupid things instead. :\

10-07-2009, 11:28

Assault Sergeant, pointing threateningly. He's played two games and he's yet to hit anyone, I think his arm's stuck.

Anyway, a picture with proper lighting and everything. I suck at vows, since it's now the 10th and this is the first model I've painted for the month (although I did pull out some Tomb Kings and start on those!)

16-07-2009, 21:54
So I painted a Painboy:

I completely changed how I paint the skin and it looks much better imo. Shame I've already painted 100ish models the old way...

I'm also halfway through painting the Razorback, so here's a WIP:

Also, the order my girlfriend and I placed a few weeks ago finally showed up. She's ploughing through the Keeper and Daemon Prince and such, but I got my toy too:

I'm ridiculously proud of it just because it's the first thing I've ever successfully pinned. 9ish years... still, it'll be easier next time, surely! I appreciate the picture's rather bright, it's not like there's any painting to see.

We also have some shared terrain to get painted - a Bastion and the Temple of Win and Awesome. The Temple's waiting for us to buy a darker grey, and the Bastion's getting its first layer of Codex Grey. Apparently the huge swathes of grey are 'boring', so I get to do those bits. Fun times.
