View Full Version : Hortwerth's painting, sculpting and converting log

Hi there folks.

I haven't shown you much lately, mostly because I do a lot of different things and I find it hard to justify squeezing them into some of my other, more focused (Ad-Mech and Orks) mammoth threads.

So, to allow myself no such excuse anymore for not actually putting the pics of my works for your viewing pleasure and hopefully criticism, I hereby start this "all in one" thread.

Most likely it won't be updated regularly, but since I do modelling for a living it's bound to be moving unless I starve to death.

I'll try to dig out the recent but not yet seen completed models soon enough.

Anyways, please feel free to comment and contribute. Most of the things seen in this thread will be finished anyways but your comments and constructive criticism will find its way into future works!

To kick it all off, here's a Baneblade I finished today. It's there to lend some firepower to a client's Daemonhunter army, hence the =I=s and seals and gold trim. The name of the tank is "our Foxy lady" for obvious reasons!

03-03-2009, 20:45
With this tank I actually used a fine airbrush for the first time. I broke it too, of course - it's not as fine now since I damaged the pin... It's still good enough for the preshading, and the actual camo/patern making... It's not good enough to paint eyes or freehands though.

Here are some detail shots:

The "Foxy lady" is freehand-painted based on these pinups (http://www.bawidamann.com/gallery/military.html).

awersome, just awersome. Your work is always a pleasure to look at.

I do like the cities of death edging you have added in, it really suits the tank.

What sort of paints where you using in the airbrush?

Captain Brown

unless I starve to death.

Please don't. ;)

Very nice, up to your usual standard of awesome painting.

03-03-2009, 21:30
Looks fantastic. Excellent freehand.

03-03-2009, 21:34
I second the Captain, please dont die

Great work and great freehand. Its a real beuty, but I would have wanted a litle bit of dust and grime on the tank. Tanks are born to be dirty angry beast in my opinion ;)

03-03-2009, 21:37
Wow, that's incredible.

03-03-2009, 21:45
Looks fantastic. Excellent freehand.

Wow, that's incredible.

Awesome (a nawet zajebisty!).
What paints did you use with the airbrush?

03-03-2009, 21:50
No doubt another must see thread from Hortworth, subscribed already.

03-03-2009, 23:18
Hortwerth's back, awesome.

The Baneblade looks sweet. At first glance, it looks as though it is hardly painted at all, but as I took a better look, I could see all the intricate details and subtleties in the paint job.

Keep up the great work.

04-03-2009, 06:08
Loving the baneblade, But I confess that I would like to attempt to copy the eagle parts on the track units.

Always an inspiration. Thanks!

04-03-2009, 06:34
I do like the cities of death edging you have added in, it really suits the tank.

I tried to make it look more Inquisitorial but not change the tank too much. What screams "Imperial agent" more than a gold trim on an otherwise camouflaged tank?

What sort of paints where you using in the airbrush?

What paints did you use with the airbrush?

For the undercoat I use Humbroll enamel paints applied with a heavy duty airbrush, then for the fine airbrush it's just Citadel acrylic paints.

Great work and great freehand. Its a real beuty, but I would have wanted a litle bit of dust and grime on the tank. Tanks are born to be dirty angry beast in my opinion ;)

I have been through detail talks on several jobs with several clients at the same time, and one wanted a "clean, parade look" for his vehicles. I'm kind of confused a bit as to which one, so I left the dust and grime for when the client actually asks for it.

Loving the baneblade, But I confess that I would like to attempt to copy the eagle parts on the track units.

What do you mean?

Excellent work!
Great paintjob and stunning freehand - 5 out of 5

04-03-2009, 09:01
Very nice work as always Master Hortwerth

04-03-2009, 11:42
nice pin up on the baneblade looks so cool dude love it.

04-03-2009, 13:11
Excellent! It has the gothic touch, that IG tanks are usually missing.

Well done!

04-03-2009, 14:26
pretty good, all though, the lower part of the I seems to be larger on one side... at least in the first photo...

04-03-2009, 18:13
Well, the pin-up next to the Inquisition symbol just looks weird and out of place.
Can't imagine them seriously hunting a Slaanesh cult with that tank.
But these are the limitations given by customer wishes I guess :p

de Selby
04-03-2009, 20:02
I'm not going to complain about the pin-up because it is such jaw-droppingly awesome freehand, but I agree it doesn't really match up with the rest of the tank. Maybe the crew has different ideas about suitable tank decoration to the adeptus mechanicus. I can imagine an Inquisitor turning up for work one morning and yelling "What have you done to my tank?!"

07-05-2009, 06:03
Ok folks, I'm really sorry for the lack of updates (as I've been pointed out in a PM), but lately I've been doing lots of small things rather than one large inspiring project.

However, maybe someone will find interest in one of the things I've been doing lately!

A Dark Elves Corsairs unit - nothing special, really - Adept (first) level painting.

07-05-2009, 06:06
Then, to accompany them, a Dark Elf noble.

This one was bought converted by someone else by the client and shipped to me for painting. Several glitches here and there, but overall a model with very nice "flow". The challenge was to make a High Elf model look menacing only with the paintjob.

07-05-2009, 06:15
As you can see from the previous posts, I've been forced into some fantasy models. This was mainly due to the girls from our studio being on vacation. They usually handle this stuff, and do this with much more fancy for magic swords than bolters. Me, otherwise. However, Kasia painted a Kroxigor and then proceeded to give birth to a lovely young lady, forcing me to paint another 3 in the same scheme for the client who bought the first one from the auction.

Me, not knowing a bit on fantasy, proceeded painting the old designs:

Which look like younger brothers beside the first one.

I was then forced to paint 3 more of the large ones (the small ones are available if anyone's interested):

First we were able to get just 2 from our indy. This resulted in the last one being painted two weeks later. I'm sorry for the obviously different photo settings.

As before, nothing special to see here, other than the colours being very different from my usual choice. It was hard trying to use the same colours as another painter, even more so because she was not around to actually tell me what are those colours!

07-05-2009, 06:24
Now, finally I was able to get my hands on some not-so-fantasy models. I re-converted a Hive Tyrant, due for Showcase level paintjob (level 3), for whom the client finally sent the wings and claws (as you can see he's half-painted. This is because I got 3 Tyrants from this client and no info how he wants them. I thought that "pretty general, as the first" so I proceeded in assembling, priming and laying all the base colour on all 3. Only then it turned out the 2nd one was to be running, and the 3rd one flying).

Still WIP.

Sorry for crappy picture, he's to large to fit into our photo area!

Then I converted a Land Rider for my friend's Chaos army. He's surname is "Pajak" which translated literally to "Spider". He runs a business called "Spider Games". So in went "Land Spider". The faces on the sides actually are recognisable as him once you seen him.

Please note this tank is not glued together and comes in 3 chunks - left&middle, right and top - to allow for painting the interior.

I will not paint this one, as he already have a painter in our studio who paints all of his armies - and it is difficult to match techniques and colour choices.

Anyways, that's all for now (though I have done several other things in the mean time. Push me and I will find motivation to dig them up)

07-05-2009, 13:42
The Land Spider is brilliant! There're some great little touches and ideas in that conversion that even we mere mortals can pick up and use.

08-05-2009, 08:01
Oh, ok, I guess fantasy uninspired figures are not what anybody's into, so my not posting for so long has been justified :p

I also sculpted a new range of bases that are available from Micro Art Studio now. They are mostly directed at Steampunk-style wargaming, hence the "round lip" of the bases. We will most likely switch them to the "GW-style" base lip - how soon - it depends on the interest they generate.

08-05-2009, 09:13
Its always interesting seeing and hearing about stuff from a professional - even when it's not their first choice subject. I really like the corsairs and can see how a busy detailed armour benefits from subtle highlighting and high contrast between the armour and the cloaks - was really surprised they are considered basic level for your studio.

The land raider is a stunning bit of sculpting - Its the face that drags the attention into the model - then you notice all the nice detailing. Even though the bases are a bit busy for my taste can appreciate the lovely work in them - great inspiration.

Oh, ok, I guess fantasy uninspired figures are not what anybody's into, so my not posting for so long has been justified :p

Well I like 'em! :)

I have a question, what colours did you use for the Kroxigors more specifically the purple and the bone ridges on their backs?

08-05-2009, 12:43
Fan-bloody-tastic work!

That landraider is stunning. The unique theme and look of it is really cool.

Beautiful Stuff, I love that "adept" corsair, I wish my miniatures were that good. And that LR conversion is stunning!

One thing, Me wants more Freebotaz!!

08-05-2009, 20:25
Brilliant paintjobs. I really like the baneblade, and the high elf. Though Im not sure about the actual colour scheme on the dark elves, seem to bright for my taste. I always think of dark elves as being dark and sinister.

how could i have not found this thread before.

this is some amazing work man. i want to see that land raider painted!

09-05-2009, 23:58
Looks really good your stuff, I'm a big fan of yor admech armies and the iron brotherhood miniatures you did for microart studio. I wish you would make more of that stuff.

12-05-2009, 21:42
Well I like 'em! :)

I have a question, what colours did you use for the Kroxigors more specifically the purple and the bone ridges on their backs?

*sigh* these are not the colours I'd come up with, but nevertheless, this is my take on them:

The purple is just Tentacle Pink, washed with Liche Purple, washed with Leviathan Purple, then re-highlighted with Tentacle Pink.

The bone is just Elf Flesh, washed with Devlan Mud, again and again, then washed with Scorched Brown, re-highlighted with Elf Flesh, with some Devlan Mud mixed in for larger surfaces, then extreme highlights with white.

One thing, Me wants more Freebotaz!!

Unfortunately, despite the Orks being very characterful, they take too much time to make do them justice. I will not make the whole army as detailed as the first ones.

Now, on the other hand... With the advent of 5th edition I lost my will to play entirely and switched to Warmachine. Last month saw my reunion with 40k and my Adeptus Mechanicus. This will result in new models for this army, and maybe will allow me to treat the Freebootaz as I did at the beginning: as a fun side project to tackle in rare free time.

i want to see that land raider painted!

This model will not be painted by me. Mainly because Spider had his whole armies painted by Michal not me and wants them painted in the same style.

Looks really good your stuff, I'm a big fan of yor admech armies and the iron brotherhood miniatures you did for microart studio. I wish you would make more of that stuff.

I can assure you this is a good year for the Adeptus Mechanicus and Iron Brotherhood. :D

13-05-2009, 22:30
Ok folks, now there's something new from me.

First up, a conversion of a lion-themed Grey Knight Grand Master, with a pet lion (that will act as a Terminator with Lightning Claws in game terms). Some touchups and cleaning left on the cloak, due for painting NMM gold.

13-05-2009, 22:32
And the lion:

Got tired with all the kindergarten anatomy...

13-05-2009, 22:35
Then, a PIP Valkyrie. This model will hit ebay next week (when I finish it).

This model needs some leds to actually see anything inside. The top is not glued yet, do you think I should magnetise it so that the potential buyer can actually take a look at the the crew compartment?

13-05-2009, 22:38
And then there's the actually painted part: the diorama that comes under the model.

Still PIP, no unit markings, no details on the base itself... but I think the models came out interesting.

13-05-2009, 22:38
I love the Lion, and the fact you are tired of kinder garden anatomy.

Solid sculpting as always

13-05-2009, 22:38
Very nice bases and GK grand master. I find his blade too long and too thick. With your skills I think you can do better than that ;)

Edit: The lion I also top notch and you even sculpted all anatomically missing parts. The Valkyrie looks promising. Nice storm troopers conversions and I love the guy on the rope.

14-05-2009, 01:03
The Grandmaster is amazing, although the blade may be a bit long. The amount of detail you have put onto the model really makes it worthy of being the centerpiece for an army.

The techno-lion, in addition to being a very characterful idea, is simple awesome. I love the lightning claw paws and the exposed spine.

Looking forward to seeing them painted!

14-05-2009, 08:11
That's a proud pair of lion balls. It makes the model look so much more... distinguished. I don't know, it makes him look like a real, battle-worn alpha male rather than some kid's plush toy.

/freudian rant.

The grand master is amazing too. :)

14-05-2009, 11:00
Beautiful inquisitor model with cyber-lion. I much prefer yours to the Forgeworld model. Also cool realisation of the troopers coming out of the valkyrie, I've read many people talk about this in a conversion but this is the first proof of the pudding.

14-05-2009, 16:52
Great work as always. I really like the Grey Knight Grand Master, look forward to seeing it and especially that LandRaider painted.

14-05-2009, 19:56
I'll be interested to see how the Valyrie paint job turns out.

14-05-2009, 20:06
Some of the coolest stuff I've ever seen. How cool is the guy one the rope? :D genius !!

14-05-2009, 20:17
Hey there Hortwerth.

Amazing stuff you have here. Can I please say that your new Powerplant bases are absolutely amazing!!

I would really like them to become available in "GW" style. I have a Necromunda gang that I am working on, and I just acquired a new set. The first set I got I have based on the Trash and Tech bases, and these new Powerplant bases would be absolutely awesome to have for the next batch. It makes otherwise identical models (of which I have quite a few) unique, and I am in absolute love with the Micro Art bases.

So if it were up to me, I'd definitly want to see them in GW style.

PS: Has Micro Art ever thought of creating small modular scenic "walls" or panels, similar to the Cities of Death modular building tiles? Seeing your bases (especially the trash, tech and factory ones), I can only imagine how awesome such things would be!

Keep up the great work!

14-05-2009, 20:44
Huzzah! Lion balls!

14-05-2009, 21:34
uber work. Can i ask how you did the cracks on the spider raider??

15-05-2009, 22:35
Cheers for all the comments folks, I see that the Lion Balls are generating much of the traffic here!

The cracks in the Land Spider were made using rotary tool and fine dental disc bore bit. I just "drew" the cracks on, and the disc's thickness kept them look uniform.

With the GKGM's blade, it was hard to find something that would comfortably accept 1,5mm brass rod that I used to rebuild the weapon's shaft. I'm confident it will look much better when painted.

Now, let me present you with some primed pics of the GKGM, which btw found the client's fancy as for now.

15-05-2009, 22:38
Please spare me the comments on the actual meaning of the lettering on his blade. Let's just assume it means that the "Ordo" Malleus is triumphant, ok? I find it quite perverting...

Ok, time for some lion balls love.

No, sorry, he just doesn't want to show off this time. Move along, nothing to see here...

15-05-2009, 22:44
Maybe some of you would rather like to see some flying bricks over the lion balls? Then the next posts are for you.

There are some mixed feelings about my choice of the camo pattern on the Valkyrie in the Studio. I just wanted the dotted german-style camo, and so it is. Some others might have preferred me to paint a "normal" random stripes camo or even the "angular shapes" camo... Well, I just felt like I'd do some spots, let's keep the others for the next Valk... if someone commissiones one, that is. It's a terrible amount of work, so I assume there's the one-and-only that will go on ebay from me.

15-05-2009, 22:46
I'm having trouble setting the contrasts and levels right with the new background. I feel the Valk is a bit darker in RL than in these pics, but when I set it so the background looks so dark! Maybe I'll try to come up with a new set of settings over the weekend.

15-05-2009, 22:47

15-05-2009, 22:50
As a sort-of afterthought I decided to add magnets to hold the roof and the rear hatch, plus the pivotal mounts of the heavy bolters. I should have thought about it earlier as drillng holes for magnets in a painted model is never good news... Well, I was lucky this time! No damage.

The guy on the rope is held with magnets to the base and to the Valk. This way the transport of this beast is possible at all.

Loving your pieces mate. I had a similar idea for the lion based on the previous 40k rulebook illustrations but had wondered how to do it and it not look like just a high elf lion that some general abducted. That idea is getting swiftly nicked. Loving the valkyrie aswell, keep up the good stuff mate.

16-05-2009, 01:36
Beautiful work on the Valk and stormtroopers. I like it a lot.

I am speechless. How did you do the drop line and where did you attach it to? It is brilliant!

16-05-2009, 19:02
I don't think there's anything wrong with the GK's halberd. Also the valk is great, and it makes me wonder if with clever use of brass rod drop lines you could support a valkyrie without using the transparent flying stand at all...

I don't think there's anything wrong with the GK's halberd. Also the valk is great, and it makes me wonder if with clever use of brass rod drop lines you could support a valkyrie without using the transparent flying stand at all...

I used 1mm gauge tin wire for the rope, so as you can see it has several things good and bad about it.

The bad:
It won't support the Valkyrie.
It will bend easily - not suited for gaming.

The good:
It will bend easily - allowed me to literally wrap it around the 3mm dril bit and then insert a rare earth magnet inside the created loop, add superglue, sprinkle with sand on top, spray with accelerator and voila - instant "invisible" joint. Just drill a 5,5mm hole in the base, put a 3mm rare earth magnet at the bottom and there's almost no gap visible.

I used some leftover parts from Baneblade or Ork trukk for the winch that the rope attaches to at the top. 2 more rare earth magnets in the winch and 2 more in the ming support and there you go! A transportable Valkyrie with troops disembarking using ropes.

I think you could support the entire Valk by using 5-6 1,5mm brass rods as ropes, the problem is: I can see the models disembarking by 2, at most 4 winches. And the 2 at the rear hatch would be pulling it a long way off. The Valk is not a heavy model, with all the clever hollow spaces inside, but it's too heavy for 2-4 1-1,5mm brass supports. I could see it on a single 3-4mm rod, though.

Now if you use steel on the other hand, that's a totally different story. 2-3 1mm rods made of hard steel would support the model, although it could have develped a "shaky steve" syndrome. The problem would be bending the steel to simulate the "rope" effect - stiff above the disembarking model, loose below.

16-05-2009, 23:47
im quite liking your storm trooper idea and maybe borrowing it for my veterans. Can i ask when you combined the body of the scout and cadian legs, how did you get it to work? Ive been trying to ponder it out, but the pics dont show the torso joints. Just all the other lovely stuff.

17-05-2009, 00:59

I also noticed that they are in a desperate need of a belt, but I found out that in the end you don't need to add one. I just inserted a 1mm plasticard spacer in between the cadian legs and the SM scout torso of roughly the right size and then proceeded with adding ammo pouches, grenades, canteens, knives, and the actual arms holding the guns (very important not to forget about these!) and in the end it turned out that maybe 1 in 5 would need a belt buckle, with the rest coping perfectly well with just the assorted stuff around their waist.

17-05-2009, 02:10
awesome lions, thx for the idea!

17-05-2009, 15:32
Cool bionic lion, looking forward to seeing it painted!

19-05-2009, 09:00
The valkyrie is insanely awesome. I hope you don't mind if I steal your storm trooper ideas. I've thought about something like them for a while, but now I know exactly what I want! Thanks!

19-05-2009, 11:21
Looks great mate, almost perfect, apart from the over spray on the back of the door around the the cadian navy lettering.

19-05-2009, 18:55
Valk and the storm troopers looking very good. Im interested in how you are going to paint the grey knight.

03-06-2009, 20:15
Another thing crawled from my desk today... Or rather it flew away.

A 3rd Hive Tyrant for the same client, Showcase level, this time with wings.

03-06-2009, 20:16

03-06-2009, 20:19
And some close-ups of the main body area:

And the tail can be seen more clearly here:

It's finished but for the flying stand... rod... thing. I will most likely paint it black (the thing connecting the Tyrant to the ruin top).

Oh, and here's a little WIP snippet:

de Selby
03-06-2009, 21:09
Very interesting to hear your thoughts on the 'valkyrie supported by drop lines' idea. I think it is beyond my modelling skills anyhow!

The flyrant is nice but the orks (is the big one about to steal the little one's coat or are they deep in discussion? I presume it is a Council of Waaagh) are already the coolest thing I've seen today.

03-06-2009, 21:17
No, no, no.

It's a Warboss, moreover, it's a Blood Axe/Deffskull Warboss, that mimicks the way the humie leaders stand on the battlefield. He will have one large power fist and one "normal" arm, a cloak, and an uniform and a chest full of medals. He will also have a monocle in his eye.

The Grot is his trusty sidekick and aide, that will be lighting his cigar and holding his gasmask.

only joking...
03-06-2009, 21:25
Wow can't wait to see how that blood axe general turns out Hortwerth.

03-06-2009, 21:31
Awesome stuff, we expect no less from Hortwerth:p
Hows the Lion and =I= coming along? That model is the Lion's ******** lol

06-06-2009, 06:05
Now, a Showcase level paintjob and I have to say it's the cleanest paintjob in my life yet. It's the first model that I could set the photos to 100% on my screen and there were no mistakes visible whatsoever. Since I was painting a lot of Adept-level speedjobs lately, I was wondering if my hand got any worse. It got only better, it appears.

Getting any birthday painting done?

09-06-2009, 02:56
I have to agree. That painting is really smooth. The bolter really shows it off: it is pristine.

18-06-2009, 03:02
Coming in late on this thread, but the cyborg lion is really captivating. It's the kind of thing John Blanche would draw and then no one at GW would ever make. Thanks for taking us there!

It once again reminds me how much I want someone with scultping skills (IE not me) to make the Jes Goodwin version of the Cyber-Mastiff ( not the spindly one they coughed out for Necromunda Enforcers)...

20-06-2009, 02:48
Thanks for the comments guys!

I'm in a hurry, so just a quick 2-pic post:

Rainbow Awesomeness Land Spider!

20-06-2009, 03:32
Really, REALLY nice work on all these guys! Cheers! Can't wait to see that GKGM and 'Friend' painted up!

Oh, and I was wondering... will the new Ad Mech stuff be here, or over in MKII?

20-06-2009, 04:00
Amazing work as you always do! Definitely a plog to watch! I love the conversion work on the vehicles, the valkyrie is just awesome. I love the conversion that was done to the land raider. I am not so hot on the paint scheme, but I know it was done for that person's taste/army so that it would fit in. I would prefer it if it had a darker scheme. The painting is flawless.

20-06-2009, 06:31
That is insanity. The colors and the faces just make my eyes bleed, but in the good way.

But seriously, crazy looking land raider.

20-06-2009, 09:53
That land raider looks like a Slaanesh acid trip.

20-06-2009, 10:14

haha, that was also in my mind as i've seen it :)
flawless painting, nothing else expected from teh great Hortwerth...

20-06-2009, 14:19
The land raider certainly works as a stand-out centrepiece for an army!
Is the rest of the force painted in the same way?

21-06-2009, 21:45
Okay, a few words of explaination behind the Land Spider's paintscheme:

The owner (his surname is Pajak = polish for Spider) grew bored of his Black Templar lookalike marines (also painted by Micro Art Studio) and when he decided it was time for another army (like 2 years ago) he wanted it very colourful and cheerful. He decided he wanted Chaos, and he wanted every unit painted different colour.

So over couple years he got bright pink noise marines, bright red berzerkers, matching bright yellow and red/orange rhino, toxic green plaguemarines, matching scorpion-green like rhino, lemon defiler, purple obliterators, pink obliterators, every-colour daemon prince, purple sorcerer, and the like.

Some people dislike that every element of this army is of different colour, but I get it. All the colours are very bright and when the army is put on the table it looks a bit like an explosion in a paint factory.

You may find some of the models from this army in the Adeptus Mechanicus/Eldar/Chaos battle report from the Firebase 8 (IIRC)

This Land Spider is both a focal and binding model for this army. It incorporates every colour of the various squads and vehicles, and binds them together into one rainbow.

All the colours of Chaos.

Plus, the faces on the sides really look sort of like Pajak. In a way that when you know him you immediately recognise who these faces represent. Not the teeth, of course.

Awesome work! Your painting is just sublime!

03-07-2009, 19:19
Okey, been to Berlin last weekend for a team tournament (teams of 3). I had a blast, all the opponents were terribly kind and sporting. We went as 4 teams, from north, south and from the capital. The top Polish team won, and I won Best Army, so mission accomplished!

Anyways, I was frantically painting and modelling the weeks before that and this week.

Here's what I have done:

3 land raiders for Hans-Peter Wamsler - I carried them to Berlin and handed them over personally together with the Librarian. H.-P. W. now gave me 6 Ravenwing batallions as his next commission later tjis year.

Here's a Crusader:

Here's the normal Land Raider:

Here's the Belial's ride:

03-07-2009, 19:20
Some more pics:

And here are all 3 together:

All in all, I had 2 weeks filled with 4 Land raiders.

03-07-2009, 19:37
Then, I finally found some time and spark to finish 2 long overdue commissions. One is an Emperor's Children lord who doubles up as a loyalist commander. I'm still not sure if I want to leave the knees and cloak so plain or add some more eagles.

03-07-2009, 19:40
Then there's a Blood Axe Warboss that's so overdue I did whole Gretchin as an apologise.

And with Barry for scale:

03-07-2009, 19:43
And last, but by no means least, here's a WIP pic of my 3 days in the work container - that will be used for terrain by MAS, and for vehicles for my Iron Brotherhood.

03-07-2009, 21:25
I want ten.
Are they compatible with the Thunderhawk Transporter?

03-07-2009, 21:41
Oooh that could work as my replacement boarding craft, instead of Drop pods, for my Space Hulk army :3

03-07-2009, 22:50
Excellent work like everything you do, really like the codpieces on the emperors children, got a chuckle out of me.

Can I ask what mixture you're using for the light green putty you sculpt with?

04-07-2009, 22:41
It's a 1:2 mix of greenstuff and magic sculp. Remember to mix each on its own first! It has a mix of properties of both putties, and I find it suits me most these days

Is that Container Like a vehicle parts transport box?

Parts, weapons, munitions, troops kept off-line... Imagine an Ad Mech expedition craft with her cargo hold full of these; then at an interesting site small robotic grav movers just deliver the right stuff to where it's needed. I will do the mover next... I don't know if "wide audience" will dig its looks, but hey - I'm not here to re-do the same stuff all over again.

Will these be sold on Micro art?

05-07-2009, 16:13
Eventually :)

probably three-fold:
- just the container
- a vehicle made of the container and the mover
- as a large terrain piece (piles of containers)

07-07-2009, 07:38
Can't wait for the transports to be done, though I'm having a bit of a hard time figuring out how they'll look:confused:. I have faith in you and the Omnissiah, though:D Put me down for at least a trio.

Any thoughts on additional weaponized arms for the tracked warriors?

07-07-2009, 09:15
Nice stuff as always Hortwerth. I especially like the Blood Axe general and his goblin attendant, although I think that the kombi-shoota/flamer on the goblins back makes the model a little too crowded, at least in my opinion. And anyway, you should really make the handle on that thing a little bigger. I think that a standard plastic shoota handle would fit much better, both in size and look.

I also absolutely love the cyber-lion. Will there be any chance of a glimpse of some painted balls anytime soon?

the emperors children model is awesome, i would say leave it how it is, as it has enough eagles, and the cape could have a painted eagle, rather than a sculpted version. also the container reminds me of the forge world container for the thunderhawk transporter, however we never got to see the forge world version as it got broke Ž_Ž. but your work is brillient.
while the grot lighting the warbosses cigar is just win, i love it!

While Bilbo Badguns' maybe you could elaborate as to why you feel its 'Meh' as im sure Hortwerth is open to constructive critisism so as to help him maintain his high standards.

As for Hortwerth, as ever im impressed by the standard of your sculpting:). I look foward to your continued updates.

Thank you for this post, I feel as it came from under my fingers.

I know the EC marine is not really intricate enough but that were the project and price limitations... And the client seems to like that it's pretty much as he wanted him to be. I'll add some more wings to the cloak and possibly jumppack as I feel these are too flat, but that's about it.

Today it was back to basics - I painted 21 WFB Lizardmen skinks in 8 hours.

Your welcome sir. There no point in such a wonderfull thread degenerating into a slanging match.

Well at the end of the day what the customer wants is what the customer gets;). Im sure if he had said "Go to town on it and damn the expense" then you would have made something truely spectacular.

A gemstone on the eagle on the chestplate, right in the middle might look good, and would help add a splash of color when painted. meh.

11-07-2009, 16:27
That was a busy week!

First, 21 skinks in 2 days (assembly and painting):

The enormous banner is from some Saurus set, and I tried to paint it as made from balsa wood for the skink to be able to carry it.

Then, I threw together 9 Marines for painting on Master level next week:

11-07-2009, 16:30
In the meantime, I sculpted 6 squigs for a client; 4 regular size and 2 large "gas" squigs.

And last I finished the Emperor's Children marine:

Thanks MFV for the gem tip!

11-07-2009, 18:21
The lizardmen and w.i.p space marines look great.

11-07-2009, 18:36
I love those squigs, especially the "gas squigs", could be a good conversion as "volcano squigs"!! very very good though.

Emp Children marine is very nice, i like all the added details.

21-07-2009, 06:51
Very impressive as always. I quite like the pastel colour scheme on the Skinks. They look so cute!

The only thing I could think of (apart from "very good craftmanship!") when I saw the Emperor's Children marien was "Is that an Eagle in your groin or are you just happy to see me?" ;)

The Inquisitor and the lion look awesome. I like the lion's yellow colour a lot.

21-07-2009, 07:47
I love that Inquisitor/GK (I'd use him as an Inq.) and Lion! Superb work! I'd kill to have something like that. Really inspiring.

21-07-2009, 10:32
Inquisitor is superb, the NMM gold is crisp and smooth. The sculpting is top notch and the armour on the lion is awesome.
That said, I find the rear of the lion (not talking the kindergarden parts) a little flat. Might just be the lighting.

Also something I've been meaning to ask, what did you use for the lion headed shoulderpads. I saw on the WIP pic that it was plastic

Hi there folks!

A fellow painter from USA, Brandon (gmmstudios) asked us (MAS) to convert him a Chaos Space marine army themed on "things that crawl from the deep blue" or as we nicknamed it, Nurgle Frutti di Mare.

He intends to paint it himself and play it on USA tournaments - I hope he'll send me the pics of the painted army.

Here are basic Plague Marines:

The weapons are Maxi Mini's Ork guns and big guns

EDIT: I'm really sorry for the Horizontal Scrollbar of Doom!

That's a wonderful and fantastic themed nurgle force. I love the amount of ideas you've put into this!

This should be really a comment to Brandon. He sent me a very detailed list of what he wants the squads to look like, pictures of the kind of octopusses' faces he fancies and various material from movies and models that he felt was cooland fitting the theme. He chose the models and sent them bagged into tiny zipper bags labelled "squad 1" and "oblits harpoons"etc. I just took these ideas and forged into models.

Oh. My. God.

If Brandon does send you painted pictures, could you post them :p?

The sea themed nurgle marines are amazing, the giant octopus/defiler is great, it could easily be a great unclean one if desired too I imagine. Those old style diving helmets work really well, and the barnacles give them the proper sense of having been at the bottom of the ocean for a long time. Do see if the customer is willing for you to put pictures of the final painted versions up here, I would be interested to see them.

11-09-2009, 04:19

Someone still managed to find this thread and ask me a question about it... I might as well continue posting in here :)

I'm sorry I've been so lazy and didn't post anything; I lost track of my threads with the Warseer reorganisation and I couldn't be bothered to dig for them.

I'm still in the modelling in case anybody missed me :)

I've been putting together 3 eldar titans since the beginning of May. Right now I'm in the 80% complete stage, and I shall finish them in this month.

Here's one pic to back up my words:

Please check my Picasa account (http://picasaweb.google.pl/hortwerth) and my new, improved website (http://www.hortwerth.com/) for more pictures and more details on the build.

the base he's mounted on is 300mm x 400mm, and he's approximately 500-550mm tall to the top of the head and around 700mm to the top of the fins.

15-07-2010, 01:52
He must of taken ages to paint, especially up to your standards, but it looks like it was well worth it.

15-07-2010, 02:17
What an amazing log! I could write a list of all the things I like on this log, but it would be much quicker to just list the Skinks as the only things I dont really like.

That Valkyrie is really nicely done, I may have to steal the idea and try it on one of mine.
The thunderbolt is beautiful and makes me want one for my guard now (but I mustnt buy any more guard, I keep telling myself).
And the Inquisitorial baneblade to start the log off was great, I may try some of the eagle sections on a tank of my own.
Finally, I would like to congratulate you on the amazing job you must have had to do on that armourcast titan and I love the way it makes the Forgeworld titans look like Sentinels next to a reaver!

Anyways, I'm to do a few objective markers to go with these and then they're off!

As always, lots more pics on my website and in my Picasa.

You work looks amazing as always, Hortwerth. Just a tiny point I'd like to state is that I like the original feet for the Phantom Titan better. But I can only assume your client is more than happy with your paintjob. Please, please let him(her?) commission some more Eldar!

Me too!!11!

Great stuff, Hortwerth, as usual. But this time is even better. Painting black at this stage is exceptional. Want one. Canīt afford though...
