We recently started a campaign. I get the impression that not many people play campaigns though they would like to. Therefore I decided to write down what has happened so far. Maybe it can be some kind of inspiration.
Bear in mind that this is not written as a piece of fiction. A campaign with more than two participants would seldom make for a good story. But it is written with fluff in mind because without it... well... what would be the use of trying to link battles?

Now, lets take a look at what has happened so far:
Cato is the chaplain responsible for bringing in Cypher who at the time was operating under the namn Jorge. He followed him to research station M’gele in the Nigra, where the ordo Xenos were working on a top secret project concerning the tyranids. Evidence shows that Cypher/Jorge contacted them and then transmissions from RS M’gele were lost.
When Cato arrived there was noone living in the station compound. Surveillance satellites, when accessed, showed that a ship called the Enigma had set course for Viridian at the same time the transmissions went down. Cato followed.

But he was not alone, setting course for Viridian. Deep in space, the splinter fleet Grendel changed course, racing to meet the Enigma. There must have been something kept in M’gele that the primitive urges of the hive mind coveted, something that they could sense over lightyears of empty space.

Three continents with several large cities and numerous population almost died in the first few days.
Only on Viridian prime, a lucky combination of winds and star fort Daedalus kept the monstosities away as refugees, including the nuns of the ordo Lacrimae and the mordian 88:th borderwolves, defended the shores from the Devourer.

Then came the Dark Angel shuttle, crashing into the inland jungles. They were met by the fallen angels and their deamon allies. Were the deamonic force looking for them on Cyphers behalf? Or were they looking for Cypher themselves and just happend to meet with Catos expedition? Questions without answers. At least from the human perspective.

Eldar pirates are a not uncommom occurance in the Pelagus subsystem and though some explorers claim to have found xenos artefacts on Viridian as well as other places in the sector, there had been no recent sightings. That might only mean they have left no witnesses.

A fast moving force attacked the dark angels just as they were securing the area where the chaos marines had been driven off. With overwhelming speed they attacked the marines, leaving them disorganised and confused, then disappeared as quickly as they had come.

Meanwhile, a force of sisters, under command of mother Mary-Celeste, trod the roads inland from the coast. There had been the unidentified shuttles and the orbital fort had read mysterious energy peaks that could only mean plasma reaktors or weapons. Even though it meant leaving the coastline dangerously unguarded, the risk of being attacked from behind was deemed greater. They were met by the eldar, intent on driving them from the area. Retreat was the only option and the eldar moved further down the coast where the tyranids now had a foothold (claw?).

This time the enemy of our enemy proved to be our friend and killed off the tyranid invasion force’s synapse creatures with surgical precision. They did not defeat the horde though, there being far to many of them to deal with even for these aliens, and the Eldar once again disappeared without a trace.

Mother Mary-Celestes force kept to the valleys, moving from one abandoned village to another. Several bodies were found and there were many bolter wounds showing. Then the scouts reported a force of marines in the valley ahead. The only way back to the coast, to the true battle against the devourer was through them. And through they went. They had tyranids to deal with!

No comments? Doesn't anyone else play campaigns? That was one of my favourite bits in the old rogue trader: all the campaign hooks. I know which one I'll suggest for our next story line...

We have a campain going on here in iceland called The Herasy on Takera V that is a three way fight between Chaos (With Ork Mercs), Tau and Imperial Forces (Each faction includes between 10 and 25 players)

At the moment the smallest force (Tau) is winning but The Imperial Warmachine is stedaly biting at its heels

Chaos is going the slow but steady but seems to be at a disadvantage against these foe´s

That would be between 45 and 60 players. Can't really compare to that since we are just a small group of friends. But I would be interested in how you play and keep track of things...

I totaled up our players right now and it is as follows

IG/SM/Ordo´s: 18
Chaos/LatD/Ork´s: 16
Tau/Kroot: 5

so thats 38 players

We desined the campain to be uber casual, you never have to fight anybody or any time, just who you want and when you want

1: Player must choose a faction and post his contact information on his faction forum thread

2: After agreeing on a time and place to meet and fight you get down to the nitty gritty stöff, you agree points value and roll on our tables what mission to fight (and these tables are designed with diffrent size army's in mind)

3: after the fight is done you post the results on a thread on our forums like this

John Doe (Super Marines of Doom)
Jane Doe (Stompy Ork´s of Death)
Jane wins 562 VP (the VP being after subtracting the losers VP from the winners VP)

4: The campain planer (ie Me) goes over the thread once per week and totals up the VP for each side and ranks them like this

Super Marines of Doom 1345

First place takes 3 territorys secont takes 2 and third takes 1

Then next week we start at VP 0 so there is no steemroller effect

At the end of the campain (most probably at the start of summer) we count the territoy´s and get Campain Points as follows
Territory 1 CP
Small City 3 CP
Capital 10 CP

Spacial Missions are being planed that give CP also like a Space Hulk type of mission where Mega Orks fight Stealth Suits or Space Marine Terminators abord the only Orbital around the planet

Special Elite units are being formed and will be as follows

SM: Thunderstorm Squads (Veterans W/Infiltrate and Stormbolters)
Chaos: Reaver Squads (Cultists made more then human by corrupt Apothecary´s ie Chaos Scouts)
Orks: Big Boy´s (Scar Boy's in Ard Boy armor)
Tau: Hardend Veteran Human Auxilary´s called The Taros Veteran´s
Imperial Guard: Commisar Training Squad (an old Rouge Trader unit)

The Takera V Campaign.
The Road To War.

The fifth planet of the Takera system is a fertile medium sized planet, with a temperate climate. It was settled at some point during the 34th millenium, mostly due to its climate. In the following millenia it grew out of being a small settlement up to becoming an agri world. During the 37th millenium the planetary govenor managed to turn the planet towards a 'civilized' status and in the subsequent decades the planetary population grew considerably. This was achieved both by an influx of new settlers along with increased fertility amongst the general population. The govenor also managed to bring in a good number of setlers with technical knowledge, and thus managed to expand the general technology level of the planet.

After a few hundred years the planet was reclassified by the Adeptus Munitorium as a 'Civilized World', which changed a lot of thigs, including the Imperial Tithe for the planet. Subsequent governors were now expected to raise a much more sizable Planetary Defense Force and maintain a greater population and level of technology. As the centuries passed Takera V became increasingly civilized, and having a very strong food production base to begin with became increasingly self sufficient. Construction becan on a larger scale space port and docking facilities in orbit, with the objective of gaining access to the systems asteroid field, long believed to hold a great wealth of precious materials. Soon, mining operations there were in full swing, providing the planet with a decent industrial base. The ruling family also became increasingly prosperous as the planets wealth increased. Still the family lived up to expectations and each Govenor paid his due to the Imperium. As time passed however, the once great noble family slowly slipped into a different mindset. They began to see the Imperium more and more as an annoyance, the system had not ,after all, seen alien invaders since it was first settled.

Then came the rule of Governor Sebastian de Aurlenq. He became Planetary governor at the age of 46, an unusually young age for such a position. He shared the ambitious nature of his family line, but quickly realized that he was born in a time where there was little for him to aspire to. There were no great projects to be finished and starting one of sufficiently grand scale, would probably outlive him. This vexed him greatly, for he did not like the idea of being remembered as Sebastian de Aurlenq 'The Dull'. He held long council with his advisors, a particularly ambitious group, which had often been ignored during the reign of the previous Governor. They also saw a chance in this new Governor, a chance to finally be heard and expand their influence.

Out of this plotting and planing came the idea that they should declare Takera independent from the Imperium, after all, they had been able to take care of themselves in the past. This idea probably originated from Anticius Kharpari, the Grand Vizier and head of the advisory group to the Governor. He was a rather vain and self centerd man and had accended to the post mostly by family backing more than skill or good council. This would allow them to keep the Imperial Tithe for themselves, both the planets poppulation and the ruling class would gain signifficant wealth if the Tithe was kept.

Two very impressive and involved examples of campaigns! I'm afraid that I've got nothing to compare with them...

I've played campaigns before, and I've got to say that I think they're a fantastic idea. I've played as Guard v. Nurgle, as Dark Angels against Orks, Chaos and Eldar, as Daemonhunters against Black Legion and as Daemonhunters in the Eye of Terror online campaign a few years ago.

Of them all, the best and most memorable was perhaps as Guard against Nurgle. This was the first campaign I ever played, and got me so completely bitten by the campaign bug that I've been playing them whenever I can. We started with a 1000pts Cleanse game to get used to the armies and rules, followed up by a Combat Patrol game with a Sabotage objective, a free-for-all Necromunda-style game as a bit of fun and then we finished up with a big 2000pts finale as a decider.

The length of the campaign was just right, I think, because it gave us a lot of scope to try different things, and yet it didn't run on for week after week.

Campaigns are fantastic, and I would strongly recommend players participate in them. Winter War 2006 will see the first proper outing of my new DIY Chapter of Space Marines, the Emperor's Disciples, as they fight across Tor Bay and Quay for supremacy in the name of the Emperor! Much will depend on how the army performs during the campaign, as I will be basing their history and future development on the results.

Wow, that map looks sweet, how did you make one like that. When I see maps like that I always have to resist the urge to start up Campains or start thinking of rules for one.

He he i have a staff of 5 running the campain with me ;)

Im the campain coordinator (and hobby shop employee) along with being the Chaos/Ork General

then there is Bjössi thats the Tau general and BFG coordinator

then there is Khas thats Fluff spacialist and IG/SM general

then there is Cleric thats our Photoshop expert and allaround fix it guy

then there is Theó thats our second fluff expert and space marine subcommander

good staff and we are haveing a blast

Hm...I'm alone managing things. But we are so few so it doesn't really matter. My campaign rules are decent enough for a small group but if we grow in numbers perhaps we'll split into teams.

Has anyone got any ideas of a final scenario? I'm thinking about upping the points cost to 2000 but not everybody has that amount of troops. Something where you either succeed or fail, no victory points or anything...

I say take and hold Alfa level with all armys at 1500 for one huge fight to remember

Take and hold alpha level is certainly an option... not sure how to include all armies though... Last stand might be even better... What is the attacking/defending points ratio?
