View Full Version : Necron Tombworld Table

A buddy of mine and I did this table a while ago but he left the city we were staying in and I am working overseas for extended periods now so it is unlikely that the table will be completed as originally envisioned but the pics should give you some idea of the intent.

Now with the new Planetstrike rules out the table can be used in its fully awakened state with the guns on the buildings actually working!

This is the original CAD dwg I did for the router that was used to cut the table.
The large circle is supposed to be the newly awakened Necron 'City' emerging from the sands. The small circle was suppoesed to be the small area that was being excavated by an adeptus mechanicus explorator team that inadvertently awakened the Necrons. [yes its an old hackneyed theme but fun non the less! :)

This pic shows the routed table, and the pylons.

Closeup of an unpainted pylon. [and no, pylon in this case doesnt refer to the FW one! The name is being used in its more classic architectural sense.]

Here is the painted table, you can see that the pylons are in various states of activation. sadly the table turned into a ruch job, the crater walls were intended to be higher [using ceiling board foam] and there was supposed to be the remains of the adeptus mechanicus excavation team in the small crater. The central pylon was also supposed to be fully activated but we ran out of time. [I did more work on that later.]

Crown of the central pylon

crown bitz.

Crown bitz assembled

Completed crown

Center detail - yes those glyph strips were lifted from the ones on the FW pylon hoop inner edge.

Completed central pylon prior to painting. - I dont have any more pics of this project but it gives the general idea.

Necron tables are a rarity, but this one is brilliantly executed.:)

14-03-2009, 18:29
This is fantastic! The table looks amazing. Are you going to add desert / excavation elements?

14-03-2009, 18:39
Wow, that's an impressive start, sorry to hear that there are no more pics, I'd love to see more detailed paint pics. It's an excellent concept and routing the table gives it that clean tech feel. Hopefully you'll get the time to do more work to it in the future. I don't much about the fluff for these guys, but it's sure giving me ideas.... Cheers!

Looks great!

14-03-2009, 21:12
Looking great, would love to see it finished if you manage.

14-03-2009, 21:32
Very nice, this should be a table that would make any necron proud.

14-03-2009, 21:39
That looks very impressive. Can't wait to see the finished product.

15-03-2009, 15:34

Woah well envisioned
and nicely constructed. :D
and and nice drafting in AutoCad.

15-03-2009, 20:45
Sexy, sexy tron table :)

15-03-2009, 20:49
Nice .... very nice.

15-03-2009, 21:11
Great looking table, would be a CRIME for this not to be finished, even if it takes a year!
Lts of small details make this very cool!
You sooo lucky to have access to a hi tech router.

Bugbait out

This is the original CAD dwg I did for the router that was used to cut the table.

Brilliant job, how did you manage to get in to that router cad tool? University?

16-03-2009, 18:08
I was lucky to get access to the router. I used to be a draughtsman so the cad stuff is easy, a chap at the club used to own a cabinet making business and we used their router. Sadly he sold the business so the golden days have come to a grinding halt :(

17-03-2009, 19:32
Oh my goodness, that looks great!

One thing though, you say the city re-emerged from under the sand. I think paniting the surrounding area in a sand / dirt / mars theme would make the whole thing look a lot nicer and add some atmosphere to it as well. The whole board is a bit too grey now. I think a different colour would make the city itself look a lot more striking!

19-03-2009, 15:13
Agreed. The original intention was to have done exactly that! [not grey but red or ochre sand]. Like I said we had to rush it for a tournament and we had lots of black and white paint but no brown on hand. If we ever do a makeover on this board, reast assured, Mars [or some similar] it will be!

19-03-2009, 18:05
you have some insane skill. I wish my terrain would turn out that well.

thoughtfoxx has the most amazing imagination and skill when it comes to conversions.
I never thought Necrons would lend themselves to conversions but he has done some really amamzing ones.

thats the first necron battlefield i have ever seen and it looks brilliant keep up the work

21-04-2009, 02:55
Brilliant! I love all your necron work! this has inspired several ideas for me. THIS IS INCREDIBLE! Keep up the amazing work man!!!!!!!

21-04-2009, 11:49
This is a work of art ! 5 stars from me.

21-04-2009, 12:30
Excellent work, This have given me some ideas for a terrain project I was mussing on creating a orbitally bombed tomb world to fight on, clearing out the last vestiges of resistance type of thing.

21-04-2009, 13:10
WOW!! I saw this in CSG, and I agree with them that you should add some kind of texture to the board to give it that emerging from underground effect!!

21-04-2009, 20:12
Necron owns ^^ man, I would love to play on this field
keep up the great work

22-04-2009, 02:34
This table would work well with Planet Strike.

23-04-2009, 05:25
Absolutely great table.
Could probably also be used for Epic. Would simply look massive.
Great work, keep completing it.

24-04-2009, 01:17
This table would work well with Planet Strike.

Just my thoughts but not only with that, think of 400Pts patrol games, or even special scenarios?!
This table is great, sadly I guess I will have the chance to come around and play on it....*sniff*

But one thing still, get it finished, I (and I think not only I) demand more picīs of it.

24-04-2009, 03:20
Looks great, most necron terrain is just a bunch of cardboard triangles, looks great can't wait to see more.

24-04-2009, 16:09
I'm loving this! Necron terrain that's interesting is so damn hard to come across and you are doing a bang-up job!

26-04-2009, 02:11
5 stars the cuts are so precise

01-05-2009, 20:05
5 stars the cuts are so precise

That's what was getting me. The precision and the smoothness of the cuts. Very nice work. I cannot wait to see more!

11-05-2009, 22:32
Amazing work! That is a table everyone loves to play on :)

13-05-2009, 12:36
Looking good. I can see now the frantic battle as the city rises, the imperium's finest* fighting a desperate battle to stop the necron menace as more rises from the sand. All of it being a desperate rush to diable the central tower before it goes active and lays waste to everything.

Amazing skills there, very envious.

*finest of course being the Imperial Guard ;)

15-05-2009, 05:52
Thats one-nice detailed board there, nice:cool:

the damned artificer
03-06-2009, 17:43
I dig your style dude, sweet table. The towers are so cool !!

24-07-2009, 20:56
sweet! this table is a great idea! are you done with pinting? i would like ti see it :)

19-08-2009, 08:09
Just a couple of pics added to show the early incarnation of the table in use.

19-08-2009, 08:22
Wow, just plain wow. The finished table is great.

19-08-2009, 12:02
Ohhhhh wow its finished :D
Love all the glowing green bits. :D

20-08-2009, 11:05
Simply astonishing  Congratulations!

20-08-2009, 16:21
very impressive....would love to own such a table as that

20-08-2009, 20:46
Wow that looks really great. I can't recall seeing a necron themed board before, nice work.

love the table

but whats the point in all the nice Necron terrain for SM and tyriads to fight over it

25-08-2009, 10:11
love the table
but whats the point in all the nice Necron terrain for SM and tyriads to fight over it

LOL! yep I feel your pain. These pics were taken in a tournament and the only ones I have of the table in use. Next satyrday though it seems the table just may get its first use in planetstrike and Necrons will be the defender. I'll take my camera along to that and post better pics if I can.

26-08-2009, 10:33
Just about the best necron terrain around. Huge props to anyone willing to tackle Necron, Tau, or Eldar Terrain.

03-09-2009, 21:55
this is a work of art, and i have no doubt that those playing on it felt the same. Awsome job. It is inspiring to see someone put this much effort into his/her hobby.

14-01-2011, 17:38
It has a TRON feeling. Good work!

15-01-2011, 05:06
EPIC NECROTHREAD ALERT!!! Just kidding, aside from the grumpy necrons this will likely awaken and be annoyed, this is simply amazing, and I can't believe that nothing has been said since 2009?!?!?!? We the people must know what happened to this thing of beauty!

im just speechless looking at this peice man, me and my friends have been trying to come up with ideas for necron terrain and that is just amazing and makes me want to step my game up some and do more detailed work

08-10-2012, 09:34
I may shamelessly steal this idea and see about finding some folks with the skill to create one for me. I gasped in awe when i first saw this and i love just staring at it and imagining the battles to be had on it. Fantastic work!

08-10-2012, 11:20
It's a good idea, and not too difficult to make a basic version by using some depron sheet. I think we need more tables where all or most of the surface is constructed :)

18-10-2012, 01:45
i think the best tables to play on are the ones which are constructed from scratch or has alot of scratch build stuff mixed in with the bought stuff.
