Weathertop is my work in progress, but I thought I'd make this a catchall thread because I like making terrain pieces in general.

For the giant chunk of resin, I decided to go with a slightly more traditional stone scheme, since that'd be within my capabilities. It'd just break my heart to let my ambition exceed my skill on this one.

Sprayed Tan (USAF). Ogryn Flesh wash. Drybrushed Dheneb Stone. I am immensely pleased with the results.

Here's all that I've done with it so far.

Yeah, I'm going to be at this for a while.

Here's a warp gate type thing I built inspired by the terrain piece from the Lizardman issue of WD.

I cut out a piece of translucent plastic bag and glued it into the arch, coated both sides with GW water effects, used a thicker model railroad water effect applied with a paper clip to make the center design, and then used blue and green washes.

Five pots of Ogryn Flesh later, I finally finished washing Weathertop.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/Terrain/weathertop002-1.jpg

Now I just need to drybrush the entirety of that thing. Still, assembled, it's looking pretty good, if I do say so myself. I'm also currently working on some extra to spruce it up a little.

And that. Is. That.

Weathertop is, for all means and purposes, done. I'm going to pick up the marine casualties on Friday, and work those in, and I think I might have an assault marine leaping off of on of the high pillars, but the structure itself is finished!

It's too damn big to even fit in my light box!

Like your choice of colours for Weathertop, it came out very nice, reminds me of the Rose red limestone of the Jordan city Petra (http://architecture.about.com/od/greatbuildings/ig/New-Wonders/Petra-lge.htm).
I think your baricades could use a black/brown wash to make them look old and ruined IMHO.
Im sure Frodo would have liked to have a unit of snipers!

hey mate,

that fire is amazing, how did you do it?

Enjoying this plog :)

I bought a pack of LED flickering tealight candles from the craft store. I glued three cotton balls to the candle, and stretched them out into the desired shape. To give it a little bit of resiliency, I then sprayed it with spray adhesive, a thick coat of primer, and then a heavy coat of black spraypaint. The fire in the pictures is what they look like when the candle is turned on.

My latest project, a dice roller industrial waste plant, which is in no way, shape, or form inspired or influenced by any other terrain threads which might be near the top of this page. :skull:

Brilliant colour on the stones can I ask how you acheived it?

You mean on the temple of skulls? Dheneb Stone, with a Skull White drybrush/stippling, then a wash of Gryphonne Sepia. Things that needed additional coloring, like the broken pillar tops, got an additional white drybrush.

I've found that you get a great marbling effect if you take a darker color, drybrush a lighter color over it, and then use the sepia wash.

This was done using Gretchin Green, Bleached Bone, and then a sepia wash.

Great stuff! Can you show us some of the pics from the battlefield, with all terrain together?

Unfortunately, while I have plenty of terrain, I don't actually have a table of my own to put them on, so it'd be apocalyptic battlescape on carpet, or particle board. :p

Bookwrak
03-06-2010, 23:39
Speaking of carpet, sprucing up mine a little is a river of coursing green goo (armorcast modular river terrain)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/Terrain/river010.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/Terrain/river009.jpg

Unfortunately, the water effects I spread across it to make it glossy, combined with my current lack of light box (those lamps are in use elsewhere right now) made it really hard to get a picture that showed the detail of the river, with this last one being the only one to come through at all.

No. I'm not going to paint the rest of the cockpit. There's no way to actually see it, unless you run a fiber optic came into there! There's so much interior detail going on with this kit that you will never be able to see once the model is put together.

I just have to finish painting the details on the upper hull and I'll be able to start putting the whole thing together.

Fredox
13-06-2010, 10:57

The hull is now assembled, and I just need to do the highlights on the tail, and wait for the glue to set before I put it on.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/superheavy/thawk001-1.jpg

I'm debating with myself, should I paint the bracing that runs down the middle of the hull a darker shade of brown, or green? Anyone have an opinion on that?

Yeah, it's an original vanilla chapter, although the sheer number of jump pack marines I'd try and field every game makes me wonder if using them as a BA successor might be a good idea.

I'm down to pretty much just the fine details, and finishing the weapons and then I'll be able to put on the matte sealant and call it table ready.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/superheavy/thawk001-2.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/superheavy/thawk002-2.jpg

I'm REALLY glad that I was doing this is pieces from the start, because there were a few bits I had to hold the model to paint spots I missed, and rotating and holding it for more than a few minutes made me feel like I was about to break my wrist. Also, worries about dropping it. I already snapped both wings off once because they were not quite positioned right for the attack wings to fit into their sockets.

My other big issue is where to put this when I finish - I've got a couple of Ikea cases for keeping my minis in, but the thunderhawk's dimensions make it way to big to fit in either. :D

isaac
19-06-2010, 22:32
Would it be possible to magnetize the wings?

Bookwrak
20-06-2010, 08:51
You certainly could if you wanted to. I thought the attack wings looked better in the down position, so I glued them in place there.

If you were talking about the main wings, again, you could, just make sure you're using plenty of strong rare earth magnets. Those things are pretty solid chunks of resin.

Bookwrak
21-06-2010, 06:21
Thunderhawk is done. Photographing models that are waaay too big to fit in my light box is a real pain.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/superheavy/thawk004-1.jpg

It's even got speakers and an mp3 player in there for battlefield music. I've got Ride of the Valkyries, the DoW2 soundtrack and AC/DC's Thunderstuck, on rotation, with Caramelldansen and my favorite high-pitched J-pop singles thrown in for maximum cognitive dissonance.

So this was a quick project I threw together this weekend:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/Terrain/ruins002.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/Terrain/ruins003.jpg

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y182/bookwrack/Terrain/ruins004.jpg

I actually did some nice weathering on the posters with adeptus battlegrey, but it got wiped out when I brightened the pictures so the walls weren't just blank gray.

I indulged my love for magnets in that along with support posts underneath, all the floors are held in place via magnets, as well as where the walls join. The whole thing can be completely broken down for portability.
