THE TALE OF FANTASY PAINTERS 2008-2009 MONTH 8

Hello chaps,

Sorry I have not been around much again.
Great to see so many of you keeping up with this.
We should now be between 1,200 - 1,600 points (depending on how many jokers you have used).

This is the thread on which you post your work for month Eight. (The work you have done in the month of MARCH).
Please make only one post in the first week.

Your post should include:

1) The description and points of the unit AND YOUR TOTAL POINTS SO FAR.
2) Any additional information you care to share with us about your painting.
3) Up to four photographs of your months work and the army so far.

A WORD ON PHOTOGRAPHS

You can use up to four photographs (the maximum allowed in a post by warseer). To show us your months painting and the 'army' so far. The best size for showing your work is 640x480 (It can be smaller or you can use ‘thumbs’ which link to bigger pictures but they must not be bigger or it takes too long for the pages to load). The best thing to do is to resize them, wherever you are hosting your images, and then drag and drop the ‘img code’ directly into the text.

THIS MONTH (MARCH) WIP THREAD

AFTER THE FIRST WEEK ... This thread will become the 'normal' ... comment and crit’ of others work, Work In Progress (WIP) pictures of your work as it develops, how you are getting on, seeking advice and encouragement for your ideas and your painting and generally chatting about the project, life and the cosmos.

However, please continue to only post your work for the first week. This is to give everyone a chance to post up their finished work before it gets lost amongst a sea of chat and WIP shots.

The MONTH 7 Thread will remain open through-out this week so folks have somewhere to continue to chat about the Tale.

I hope everyone has had a great months painting.
I look forward to seeing everyone’s work.

All the best
Harry

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2008 and finishing with their last post on the last day of July 2009.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.

THE PAINTERS:

We have made a little change in how we keep track of how much each person has been painted so far. Braad has very helpfully taken over the record keeping for the Tale and will be the one responsible for outputting the tables showing how we are doing from month to month. In addition to the one below showing who has painted for how many months, we also have a table in the attachments which breaks it down month by month. If you spot any mistakes in the tables, get in touch with Braad.

ARMY: Vampire Counts
POINTS THIS MONTH: 200
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR: 1401
1 JOKER PLAYED
MODEL COUNT THIS MONTH: 50
TOTAL MODEL COUNT: 124
THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT 1: 25 Zombies
UNIT 2: 25 Zombies

Build/Conversions: 1 box of zombies and 1 box of empire militia. Cannabalised a few zombies and mainly used the zombie parts with a bit of militia sprinkled in for a bit of variety.

PAINTING: Dark and dirty. Finished of with a dip of FAP strong tone. The blood is a mix of 75/25 gloss varnish and red/black ink. It came out really well and I applied it after they were all dull-coted.

BASING: Usual, vallejo grey pumice and static grass.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS: Finally getting them finished and the blood turning out so nicely.

LOWS: NEVER NEVER NEVER will I batch paint 50 models ever again. At times I was losing the will to live, 50 zombies = 100 hands = 500 finger nails. Has anyone ever tried batch painting 500 finger nails in 2 hours and not gone mad? well I very nearly did. But they're done now, so I'm happy.

Sorry about the number of photos, this may spread to 3 posts.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: 21 goblins archers, 1 Goblin Big Boss, 7 Orc Boyz, 1 Spider Rider and 1 Goblin Chariot

BACKGROUND/THEME: This army will represent a horde of mainly goblins led by Grom the Paunch with some 'elite' orcs and a few trolls as back-up.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Added a Snotling from the rock lobber crew to the chariot. I also planned an extra crew member, but in the end it didn’t fit right so I skipped that one (probably I’ll put it on the next one…). Also added the squashed squirrel for a bit extra humor.
The boyz with shield are actually Big ‘Uns that go with another unit… But I painted them, so they can just as well join this unit, until the rest of the 2 hand weapons boyz get done (after the tale, I think).
The Gobbo Big Boss is a straight out of the box Avatars of War model.

STILL TO DO: Finished.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Glad I did so many again. I’m really getting somewhere with reducing the amount of unpainted models at the moment.

POINTS: 291

NEXT: Wolf Riders!

THE ARMY LIST :
(in fat the finished stuff; in red the unfinished stuff)

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: 10 Wardancers incl. Champion & Musician

Build/Conversions: None.

PAINTING: Nothing special.

BASING: More of the same.

STILL TO DO: Varnishing.

HIGHS: Can't think of any.

...LOWS: While I enjoyed painting last month's batch of Wardancers I didn't have fun with these, which is strange, considering it's just more of the same.
And I'm convinced the Wardancer musician is currently GW's worst mini. The face suggests that it suffers from some kind of genetic defect and there are fairly large areas that aren't supposed to be there: the part between the right drumstick and the body, the connection between the left blade and the drum.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

CHARACTER/UNIT: 15x Executioners

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out the box.

PAINTING: Silver is Boltgun Metal washed with Badab Black and highlighted up to Chainmail. Gold is Shining Gold with a heavy Devlan Mud wash.

BASING: Same as previous months.

STILL TO DO: These are done.

HIGHS AND LOWS: How can there be lows with such beautiful models. 10 years old and still amongst the best sculpts GW has ever done.

The only annoying part was basing the models, as grains of sand seem to fit perfectly in the chainmail and stubbornly refuse to come out.

And yes, the banner does look like a running man. Exactly what the unit tends to do every time it gets on the battlefield!

POINTS: 210 points. Current army total now stands at 1630 points.

PLAN FOR NEXT MONTH: Another unit of Warriors.

Month 8's Painting

Unit(s): 12 Pikemen and a Paymaster
Points: 175
Total Points: 1461+175 = 1636
Models/Conversions: The Pikemen are more Empire Spearmen with Brass Rod Pikes, this time rear rankers. The Paymaster is the WHQ Noble
High Points: I am happy with the Pikemen Banner (but stupid me forgot to get a picture and now the light's not good), it was my first attempt at freehand. Also happy I got around to painting an absolutely awesome figure with the Noble.
Low Points: The banner reminding me what an absolute pain in the balls Shining Gold is to work with.
What's Next? I have several options next. Current lead is a bunch of Knights of the Blazing Sun (DOW Heavy Cavalry) but I also have a ton of options...

Magos Explorator's High Elves
6 months painting - 1200 points, 2 jokers

I've not painted quite as many figures as Braad or fluffystuff this month but think I am doing ok! ;)

This update is around 200 points. I decided to paint my last Hero choice (the Warhammer Quest elf ranger) and the second unit of archers. The Hero is here:

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/andy_sayer/whq_elf_ranger_front.jpg http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/andy_sayer/whq_elf_ranger_back.jpg

He was good fun to paint and I'm quite pleased. I tried some glow effects on the sword runes again but not convinced it worked to well; any pointers appreciated.

The monopose archers were not so fun to paint, but that's two units down and just one of them to go so I need to stick to it! They're not quite as good as the Hero, but they're consistent.

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/andy_sayer/elf_archer_regiment_2.jpg

Here's a close-up of the champion; I actually finished him a while ago, but this picture's slightly better than the previous one:

http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh255/andy_sayer/elf_archer_unit_2_champion.jpg

Next up the aforementioned third and final archer unit! Then I have one unit each of White Lions, Shadow Warriors, and Spearelves.

I’m back… sorry for no signs of life from me during last two months (even dough I pretty sure you didn’t notice my absence :-P) It was a very hectic time in my life and really had no time nor mood to paint or even browse the forums. But recently I went back to see your work my fellow painters and must say I’m very impressed by both amount and quality of yer painting.

Name:Reik
Army: (Un)divided/Undecided Warriors of Chaos
Points so far: With the finally updated list so far it's 1466pts
Jokers: 2 /Shame on me/
Highs:Finally getting painting stuff
Lows: Terrible GS work on the centaurs

Now onto pictures….

First is my new hero of Nurgle / I know it’s lame to put a third hero but it’s the only way I can catch up with the rest of you/ Foaming Mad Furrikson
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj171/vonReinhardt/mad.jpg
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj171/vonReinhardt/mad2.jpg

And 5 centaurs since I really try to make my army to look as if those were remains of some major chaos invasion or sth similar that dwell in forest of the empire. That’s why there’s no northern looking unit in this army. These are the up to date pics I definitely can't call them finished but they have to do for now

And the army shot:
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj171/vonReinhardt/DSC_0104aaaa.jpg
Finally I’ve made a list which I’ll stick to… before you say anything Yes I’m totally aware it isn’t competitive but to be frank I haven’t played a single battle with WoC since their book was released /OK I played only once in my life with chaos and it was on the WD get you by list/

Chaos Lord aka Harry + shield………………………220 /DONE/

Exalted Hero of Nurgle aka Foaming Mad Furrikson… 130 /DONE/

Exalted Hero of Khorne aka Pulper Spikehead …….125 /DONE/

It will come with 66 models painted over 12 months I don’t think it’s big achievement compare to you guys especially horde armies like greenies. Must say that I’m totally stunned by your determination my fellow painters.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: Army General – Marshal Gerhardt Schoendorf of Hochland

POINTS: 125

BACKGROUND/THEME:
A grizzled veteran of many wars for the Empire, Gerhardt Schoendorf has been made a Marshal of Hochland, and charged with the duty to defend the province from enemies within and without and to ensure that martial law is enforced following the Storm of Chaos.

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Most of the Marshal is the second mounted Valten model, with ghal maraz replaced with the Runefang from the Empire General boxset, and a shield from the same. Greenstuff used to give him a floppy hat with feathers from the state troops sprue added.

PAINTING:
Greens and reds to match the Hochland units. Metallics use Badab Black and Devlan Mud washes and a second highlight of metallics.

BASING: Same as usual.

STILL TO DO: Thankfully – nothing bar some tidying on the horses tail and the hat feathers.

HIGHS: First attempt at sculpting GS, so quite happy with the results. Quite like the conversion to make a different looking general, and the shield helps to cover up the exposed arm (saving me having to try and make puffy sleeves!)

LOWS: Under 200 points, but next month is over 200 points again, so hope that will balance it out.

BACKGROUND/THEME:
Sort of a lord being turned and his loyal retainers have risen from the grave to serve him in all eternity.
Either that or he just leads a load of dead people...

BUILD/CONVERSION:
Straight out of the box (or blister in this case).

PAINTING:
I use the Wargames Foundry Paint System so my colours will be a little different to the GW names.

BASING:
Using a mixture of bases from Back-2-Base-IX (dirt) and Foundations of War (battle debris). Undercoated black, drybrushed with all three drab colours, with the stones picked out with all three granite colours. Varnished (dullcote) and static grass added. Drilled, Pinned, Glued & Magnetised!
Have used cotton wool on the ethereal models to try for that "ghostly" effect.

STILL TO DO:
Banner on the skellies & grave guard. Give some attention to the "statueness" of the wraiths. "Bloody" the army up a bit - it looks too clean at the moment. Larger movement trays required (5x5) x 3 for future months...

HIGHS:
Last push to get the bulk of the army completed worked & am well on with April's painting.

LOWS:
None really this month, other than the bright shiny stuff purchased at Salute which is attracting my attention...

And the monthly crappy army shot:
http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q438/tarjeiaasen/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/P4050224.jpg

Background: It has again been a busy month for my general, Barack, the Bringer of Change. He's made some intimidating speeches to the leaders of Bretonnia and the Empire, suggesting they go and fight the greenskins with rather more effort than previously. Likewise he's been trying to convince some tribes of greenskins to fight others with even more enthusiasm than before. At home he has shocked the Slaaneshi old guard in the Reapublican party, stating that the term 'War with Terror' has now been removed from use, to be replaced with the much more accurate 'War with Fear'. HIllary, Barack's Minister of Invading People said in a short commentary: "Maybe we will buy a plastic Giant next year and have some Terror then."

Modeling: Most heads are from the new Horsemen, who look heaps better than the old ones. Sadly I didn't have enough helmetless ones, so three guys have old heads. The guys with flails are fairly standard, but some take weapon heads from the Horsmen as well. The great weapon guys have weapon heads from the warriors fitted to hafts from flails. With a couple of them I modified the arms to hold the weapons in a more horizontal manner, which I think looks good. I'm quite pleased with the drummer, which is a very simple little conversion, taking the upper right arm from a horseman, which let me place the arm in a quite natural pose. The other guy has a left arm with great axe made out of six separate little pieces to get the pose right. The hand with the horn is from the warrior kit. It's slightly large, but it's not too noticeable, I think.

Painting: Skin is Flat Brown + Medium Fleshtone -> Medium Fleshtone -> Dark Flesh -> Dark Flesh + Basic Skintone. Pants are Leather Brown + Black -> Leather Brown alone. Straps and things are Flat Brown -> Devlan Mud wash -> Flat Brown + Saddle Brown. Hair is Goldbrown + Flat Brown -> Goldbrown alone. Iron is Boltgun Metal -> Devlan Mud wash -> Chainmail

Highs this month: They paint up reasonably quickly since they have a lot less details than the Horsemen. The heads make them look decent and I like the little conversions.

And lows: Only 128 pts for the lot of them! Pinning tiny little weapons.

Yet to do: Nothing. :)

Next month: Either a BSB on a Disc, a Sorcerer on Disc, or both.

The Raven Host

Units: 5 Chosen, and 3 chaos warriors

Backround/Theme: The chaos warriors from the game Warhammer Online: Age of Reckonning.

Build and conversion: The three warriors were strait from the box(this is more true then you think). The Chosen upper body are the chaos knights built as normal but you don't glue on the legs. The legs are from chaos warriors that I just removed the tops off. Glued the upper boddies to the legs, a little GS work, and presto you have plastic chosen.

Painting: Same as others.

Basing: Same as the others.

Still to do: Not a thing.

Highs: Getting it all done.
Lows: Just finished them tonight(getting stuck on lizardmen).

Points: 5 Chosen, sheilds, MOT, Full Command Pts. 165
3 Chaos warriors Pts. 48
Total from last Month Pts. 1564
Total from this Month Pts. 213

Well, its already a day past commenting-day, so I might as well kick it off!
Here goes:

fluffystuff – Excellent job on those! Very dynamic and lots of variation. Also great paintjob on them. And lots of models, which also is a very good thing.
I think the one with his guts falling out is my favourite :D

EmperorNorton – Well, maybe you think you painted nothing special, but I think they look just fine! Also great armyshot, it really starts to grow now!

EmperorNorton – And again you! Well, not a very big update, but a nice one again. No get yourself together and do that freehand!

derv – Impressive! I wouldn’t want to find myself standing in front of those…

Zark the Damned – Ah, great! Your army is so colourfull while not overdoing it at the same time. So funny to see all these different models together, indeed really gives it the feel of a DOW army.

Ego Ninja – So that is Festus… gloopy… (don’t have another word for it, I think.)
But great job done again!

Magos Explorator – I think I already told you in your blog, but the warhammer quest elf is a really cool model, and you did a great job on him.

Reik – Well, good to have you back, nonetheless! What kind of hero are you going to use that model for? Good job on him, anyway. And don’t forget finished pics of the centaurs when you got a camera again.

Bluesabre – Lots of dark elves around, thesedays… I like your freehands a lot, especially the way how they show what kind of unit they belong too.

Death Korp – Well, as long as your holding on to it, it’s just fine. Brutal models, too!

GalenArtorius – Excellent paintjob on that one. And great conversion too. I really like this one.

SuavelyDunn – Pfew, your army is getting so large… Wish I could paint that fast… But it looks great! One of my favourites here, I think.

Avian – Nice. The new heads indeed look good on those bodies.

Digital~Punk – Well, the jokers ain’t around for nothing, so might as well use them. Looking forward to seeing your work next month, and show us a WIP in the meantime, if you can.

saltpappa – Those are so cool! The big eye in the scope of the left-bottom one is awesome! Great post.

Dino – You lucky git… Need only to paint 8 models, where I need 20… But fine models nonetheless!
May I suggest some kind of shiny ink on the blood, though?

Well, that's it for today.

And a WIP pic from me. Finished the wolves for my riders already:

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh299/Braad-82/Warseer/wolves4.jpg

The howling one, which ofcourse will be the musicians wolf, is my favourite, I think.

Also finished a night goblin BSB a few days ago, but that one won't feature in this tale. I also started work on the gobbo that will be riding my giant scorpion. He's green now...

It's all looking good so far guys.

I think my favorite so far is Marshal Gerhardt Schoendorf of Hochland. He just looks cool :) Although painting 50 zombies certainly demands respect when they are done to that level.

My stuffs coming hopefully by the end of the weekend, pretty much done but studying for finals is keeping me from finishing. So for now, comments!

@fluffystuff: zombies look great, love the different colours.

@Braad: Nice variation in models done this month, I really like that big boss!

@EmperorNorton(WE): The army is looking great, and the war dancers came out excellent!

@EmperorNorton(VC): Good work on the standard, let us see when you do some freehand you are happy with!

@derv: Wonderful painting, and I agree those are some of GWs best sculpts.

@Zark the Damned: Nice yellows, and the army is coming out great!

@Ego Ninja: Good sickly looking sorcerer! Hounds looks nice too.

@Magos Explorator: That hero mini is quite nice looking, and I love the purples you do.

@Reik: Good to see you back! I think the hero looks nice, what mini is that? Looking forward to seeing the centaurs as well.

@Bluesabre: Impressive freehand, your dark elves are looking wonderful.

@Death Korp: Knights look great, hope to see you stick around!

@GalenArtorius: Very nice conversion and paint job, amazing work.

@SuavelyDunn: That's a lot of undead. Quality work on all them, I like the skin in the ghouls a lot!

@Avian: Great work on the marauders, the heads look perfect on them. Loving the army so far!

@saltpappa: Wonderful thunderers, love all the small details!

@Dino: The metallic blue looks really nice, and the army quite impressive!

Reik

@Braad:Well thank you very much. I'm also very glad I've managed to get back on the painting track even though I did not paint as many minis as you did:D I'll be using him as an Exalted hero of Nurgle so that my other chaos dwarf was not so lonely:D

@Zujara:Thank you. I'll post the centaurs ASAP but frankly saying I'm not quite sure when that will be. The model itself is a golden oldie made by Marauder, it was a part of a box set Dwarf Renegades or sth like that btw the other dwarf I've posted some time ago is also from that set. This one is called foaming Mad sth. I don't remember the full name but I think I've posted his name in the list.

As for commenting yer painted stuff my fellow painters I'll try to do that later this day.

Fluffystuff: Impressive amount of models there. They look fantastic as your stuff always does. I love the blood effects and the rusty weapons. You’ll have to give us all a painting tutorial some day!

Braad: Excellent work on the spider, very striking paint scheme. Your army is coming along well.

EmperorNorton: Sounds like you are beginning to struggle with the Wood Elves. The army shot is looking very nice – do you have something exciting lines up for next month?

EmperorNorton: Freehand isn’t too difficult, have a try. Go with a simple scheme and draw it on with a blunt pencil first. This way you can use an eraser to get rid of any mistakes and have something to follow when painting it.

Zark the Damned: Simple but very effective conversions. Looking good! I really like the freehand on the banner.

Ego Ninja: You’ve really captured that putrid look on Festus. Love the model. Those hounds are nicely done and have really beefed up the look of your army now. That’s a good amount of models finished!

Magos Explorator: That ranger is one of my favourite models and you’ve done him justice. The glow is well done but too dark – it doesn’t jump out at you on first viewing. Maybe try give it a couple of lighter shades near the edges?

Reik: Welcome back mate! Love the hero model, how characterful is he!!!

Bluesabre: Fantastic freehand on the banners. Your army continues to look more and more impressive every month. Keep up the good work. What Sorceress are you painting up? I can highly recommend the one from Guild of Harmony (they are based your side of the pond I believe!)

Death Korp: Looking good, but shame about the blurry photo. Any chance of another? I really like the bases.

GalenArtorius: Beautiful paintjob. Looking forward to the Swordsmen!

SuavelyDunn: Very nice all round. I like the simple but effective paint scheme on these. Are you using FAP Strong Tone for the shading?

Avian: Coming along very nicely. How did you paint the metal on the weapons, it looks excellent and is something I really struggle with.

Saltpappa: I always love your Dwarfs. Fantastically painted and such brilliant sculpts. Lets see the army shot!!!

Dino: The conversion king is back. Those warriors look very busy, so much going on with every part of the model. I really like what you’ve done with the bases.

Thanks for your comments, guys.

EmperorNorton: Sounds like you are beginning to struggle with the Wood Elves. The army shot is looking very nice – do you have something exciting lines up for next month?
While I didn't have as easy a time with the second batch of Wardancers as I had with the first, I'm not really struggling.
I've been trying out a new painting method for Glade Guard and those have been fun to paint to far. In fact I had hoped to finish 400pts this month to be done with my 2000pt army, but that may not happen now, because I injured myself yesterday.

EmperorNorton: Freehand isn’t too difficult, have a try. Go with a simple scheme and draw it on with a blunt pencil first. This way you can use an eraser to get rid of any mistakes and have something to follow when painting it.
Thing is, I can't even draw a straight line. Hence I'm afraid of attempting freehand, especially since it could ruin a mini I've already spent a couple of hours on.
But then I've never tried converting or properly basing a model before last year, so maybe I should just try.

Replies to feedback
@ Braad, Zujara: Thanks, I really think the heads make a huge difference with these guys. When I get around to my block of Marauders (in the next Tale...) I'll also try to use arms from the Horsemen as that is the other thing I don't like about the set.

@ derv: The weapons are really ridiculously easy (and only use GW colours, which should be convenient for you non-Vallejo users), being Boltgun metal -> Devlan Mud wash -> Chainmail highligh. Just be a bit careful with the Chainmail and it looks quite nice. I know some people use silver on their weapons and that's just a bit too bright for my taste.

Feedback for other people
@ fluffystuff: Some really hilarious conversions in there :)

@ Braad: That flattened squirrel is just hilarious (reminds me of last night when I was walking down by the water and the road there was heaps of flattened frogs). Very cool army :)

@ EmperorNorton: Very nice Wardancers. Have you considered getting any of the more bouncy ones available from the website?

@ EmperorNorton: I hate freehand too, and try to search through the army books for some suitably easy symbols to copy.

@ derv: Love the gold in that unit. The army is looking very impressive.

@ Zark the Damned: Aye, that imperial Noble is a great mini. Very nice pikemen conversions

@ Ego Ninja: Looking good, though the pics are a bit dark. Any particular reason for going with ten poisoned warhounds? For 90 pts I'd rather have three units of 5 regular warhounds.

@ Magos Explorator: That ranger is great and the colour choice is excellent

@ Reik: Nothing wrong with painting characters to catch up. I did the same thing my self :)

@ Bluesabre: Lovin' that Dark Elf army. Have you considered shields for the crossbowmen?

@ Death Korp: Welcome back. I believe you are the third painted with that exact same unit!

@ GalenArtorius: I love those minor conversions which really change the look of the model. The hat is just perfect.

@ SuavelyDunn: The army is looking better and better. Very good choice of colours, they go really well together and make for a nice unified appearance.

@ saltpappa: What can I say? One of the best painted dwarf armies I have seen. Love the little details, such as the eye in the scope. Do you plan to add a banner to the standard pole?

@ Dino: Very nice Chosen - they look very much like the metal models. How many do you plan on getting in total? Are you doing anything with the parts left over? Knights with warrior torsos, for example?

My own project for this month is coming along nicely. I've converted up my BSB on Disc and will start painting him today. Good luck everybody!

That's a lot of discs!
Like, 3?

I got to say, I got distracted at the moment. Right now Gorbad Ironclaw and a drum carrying black orc big boss just appeared on my table... And I did some building and converting on other non-tale-related stuff. Very bad, I know...
Though the wolf riders got their first coat of green, so that's good.

Eventually, when my army is fully complete, I will have 7 Disc riders in total!

1) Daemon Prince (new plastic one, but instead of wings I figured he'd fit in with an upscaled version of the discs the other guys ride) [waiting for the model to be released]
2) Sorcerer Lord (3rd edition three armed bird head guy) [done]
3) Sorcerer (converted plastic one) [done]
4) Sorcerer (6th edition bird head guy) [in the mail]
5) Sorcerer / Exalted (3rd edition faceless guy with book and mace) [in the mail]
6) BSB (converted Chosen standard bearer) [WIP]
7) Exalted (converted Chosen) [have model but not started on yet]

In addition I'll be painting up my Chaos Dwarf Sorcerer Lord on Lammasu as a Sorcerer Lord of Tzeentch on Manticore, and I want three or so Slaaneshy guys (probably one Sorcerer and two Exalted). Possibly I will also paint up some of the extra Chosen to be Exalted Heroes on foot. And possibly a Dragon Lord, but I haven't decided whether to wait until they release a new model or convert the plastic HE one.

So a lot of characters when I am all done! :D

Magos Explorator

A couple of comments for now, more later on. Thanks for the kind words on the Ranger; sadly I don't have any more character slots spare so it's infantry from here on it!

Fluffystuff: Well done for getting through all those zombies! They look good!

Saltpappa: I think the orange tone works very well; it isn't a colour I'd have thought to use.

Braad: Your volume and quality of output continues to astound me!

Braad
10-04-2009, 16:22

Hehe... When my O&G army is done, I'll get to pick from at least 34 characters... and that won't be all, I can assure you...

@ Magos
Yeah... I just don't have much else to do :D

And a little something... Since Harry is very busy at the moment, Avian and me took over a bit... We now got an updated table of painters in Harry's second post, first page, thanks to Avian's moderating skills. These show how far everyone was after month 7, so the results in this thread aren't in there... Please check if we got everything right.

I'll make a halfway-update of what we're up to in this month in a few days.

@Fluffystuff: My ultimate compliment would be that you just made me wanna strip all my zombies in disgust at my paintjob... which I thought was good!

@saltpappa: Just... wow! I take it these are the last edition models and not the current ones? Absolutely fantastic. You manage to make them a unit AND unique at the same time.

I haven't had the chance to comment on everyone's work yet, to the point that I even forgot to post my own entry! Comments should follow either tonight or tomorrow (probably tomorrow). But enough ramblin'.

ARMY: Orcs (White Orcs, of the Once and Future Git-maybe)
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR: 1197 (just shy of six months and two jokers)
MODEL COUNT: 97 (only 52 more to go!)

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: Black Orcs, with shields and full command. They do have shields, just, uh, they are hiding them from you, since they are such cool bitz (and you only get four with a 20-man unit ).

BACKGROUND/THEME: These are the fabled White Orcs near Crookback Mountain and Mad Dog Pass in the Badlands. They are of a lighter skintone, but not at all White. Instead, they paint their faces with a greenish-white Skull, giving to their true tribal name.

As such, they are being led by one who could be The Once and Future Git (they don't really care either way, so long as the Waaagh! is flowing), and as such have gotten the attention and respect (as much as one can) of a contingent of Black Orcs, known as the Black Teef Clan, led by one known as Grimfang Blackteef, a 'orrible Black Orc that is accustomed to cracking 'eads.

Grimfang decided to throw his lot in with the gathering Waaagh! of the Skull Taka's (name pending still), and currently has supplied him with a unit of his boyz.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the box....that was bought when they first came out and just now painted :D!

PAINTING: Where to begin....the way they are now is made up as such; Skin- Orchide shade, then many washes of Badab Black, highlight subtly with a mix of Orchide Shade and Dark Angels green, with tiny bits of Dark Angels green for the final highlight. Metal armor is mix of Boltgun/Black, then Badab Black, then highlight with chainmail.

I cheated on the Black parts ofthe armor (shoulder pads), and just used Gloss varnish, then went over that with the Dheneb Stone markings. Other than that, all the other colors (except red) in the army are used as well.

BASING: Same basing as before, but with some more Scorched Grass added in patches. Still need to make a movement tray.

STILL TO DO: Lots. Only the front rank has all the skin highlights, and pretty much everything still needs a final highlight added. The banner also needs a sigil of sort.

HIGHS: From afar, they look ace to me, and the army is growing. Also, I have figured out a way to paint these boyz up now, so they should be a breeze for the other 50 I need to get done with the army. That is a huge, huge plus, and means that I think I can get them done quickly now.

LOWS: I couldn't decide on a color scheme, to the point that these were going to be my third month entry. First it was red, then it was metal, then it was black. Then I realized I still cannot highlight black. So then I tried the 'chipped' armor effect. I was frustrated...until I looked at the side of my Gorkamorka box! Thus, the 'dags' and such were placed on the shoulder pads, and I love how they look. I just didn't finish painting them to my standard, because I had lost all motivation. It was like I had painted them four times already!

August: Da Once and Future Git-maybe!!! (unless plans change).

Sorry about the pics (again). Still 're-setting' up my hobby room after all of this time, but the good news is that I am getting ever so closer to a decent space (the evolution may even make it into my P-log over the next week)!

OK folks, comments time:

@ fluffystuff - excellent stuff, not only have you managed to get a hugely impressive amount of miniatures painted but you've done them to such a high quality too it's amazing, awesome looking blood/guts too

@ braad - also an impressive amount of models & some excellent stuff from you again & nice WIP

@ EmporerNorton - very nice wardancers & BSB, i still love that treeman so much!

@ Derv - beautiful looking executioners, very good scheme & very neat & effective painting

@ Zark the Damned - very cool stuff again from you, ahh Warhammer Quest, probably the best game GW have ever made

@ Ego Ninja - that Festus model is excellent & your painting certinaly does it justice, excellent dogs too!

@ Magos Explorator - ahh, Quest rears it's head again with quite possibly the best minature ever released for it. the painting is excellent too, very neat & lovely scheme. same for the archers too

@ Riek - cool looking stuff again, definately need to get some better pics up for those centaurs though!

@ Bluesabre - excellent stuff again, your army is coming together very nicely with an excellent colour scheme

@ Death Korp - looking good but the photos aren't the best, any chance of some slightly clearer ones (maybe some pics of single models too)?

@ Galen Atorius - excellent general, very bold & complementary colours & very neat painting

@ SuavellyDunn - gorgeous indead again, that army is looking amazing now, the numbers are really racking up & when ranked up together they are looking extremely impressive (i really need to find that post where you told me how you painted them so I can save it to my computer!)

@ saltpappa - beautiful looking Dwarfs, very smooth painting & I love that eyeball at the end of the scope on that one Dwarf!

@ Dino - very nice Tzeench stuff again, really like the extra work you've put in on those bases too

@ Avian - awesome stuff again

@ Doi - shame on you for playing a joker!! Hope you manage to get some painting done over Easter. I am going back to Uni so I'm afraid i'm going to have to disappoint you & only do one army next year which is going to be in TO40KP

Okay, comments first then some replies.

Fluffystuff: Brilliant result, I think trying to do that much variation in one month would have done me in.

Braad: Another large haul by someone, well done on finishing them all, the army is coming together nicely.

EmperorNorton: The wardancers are still better than the previous versions. As to the freehand on the undead banner, just have a go, I did. Doesn’t have to be fancy to be effective.

Derv: Good looking unit there, I love the way the yellow metal on the armour has turned out. The army is coming along nicely.

Zark the Dammed: The banner looks great; I found with the gold on my banners that it was hard to see what was going on until I finished with a coat of dulcote. The classic noble brings back memories; I think I have one of those somewhere still.

Ego Ninja: Rather horrible looking individual I think, only Nurgle could love him. The blue in your army still stands out really strong.

Magos Explorator: Nicely done on the hero, I have one of those somewhere as well. Good luck with the last lot of archers.

Reik: Foaming Mad Furrikson certainly looks the part.

Bluesabre: Go me!!!

Death Korp: Knights look alright, I agree, needs better picture.

GalenArtorius: Very nicely put together.

SuavelyDunn: Unit and characters have come together nicely; the whole army blends together brilliantly.

Avian: Simple but effective conversions and paint job, the units look great.

Saltpappa: This unit is excellent; I love the little details you gone too.

Dino: sorry mate can’t see your pictures atm = (.

Nephilim of Sin: Mean bunch of boys that lot. Deft need something on the banner.

Now some replies:

@Braad: I wasn’t overly confident with doing freehand to start with so I figured I’d keep it simple and just show what the unit’s role was. Getting easier with each new flag that comes along now.

@Zujara: Thank you.

@Derv: Thanks, I’m doing the new High Sorceress from GW this time, I’ve seen the one you mention and it’s quite nice, I may yet get one, as well as the AoW one, only time will tell.

@Avian: Thanks, I thought about shields, but after the fiddling around with ranking them up I ran out of spots to put them, so I dropped them. I may return to investigate this at a later date.

@JonahMaul: Thanks

Darnoks Tale of Easter Horrors - Painting of 2009

Nonono, no zombie pirates from me - at least for now. But... zombie eggs!

You know, usually you go hunting those colourful easter eggs. What if the start coming after you? That is the basic idea behind my little "diorama". It was actually built for last years easter, but didn't get painted for different reasons, so I wanted it to be done for this year.

Buildingwise it was pretty simple: a wooden egg of the "appropriate" size - appropriate for a giant zombified monster egg - with added zombie arms and some simple GS work, a running peasant from the WHF giant box, some bones, and some easter eggs made from GS. Painting was kept simple too. I wanted to bring a funny idea across, not get a price for painting. The pictures are horrible, as usual. But enjoy:

That's hilarious! :D

A little pic of the almost completed BSB:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q438/tarjeiaasen/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/P4110242.jpg

He needs some extra highlights here and there, and I haven't gotten my talons on the snow flock thingy I intend to use on top of the snow patches to make it extra sparkly, but it is almost done. I've started assembling the second Warhound pack, more for something to do other than any real hope of having them done by friday.

Yeah I had you put down for 2 jokers everywhere, except in that little line what ended up in the first post of Harry :S
Fixed it here now, so next time it should all be ok!

Succes! You made me smile :)

Comment time!

For Team Green:

Braad: Where to begin, you have given us so much awesomeness! I already commented on the roadkill and chariot marks in your Plog, but they are worth pointing out again. The snotling on the chariot was a well-placed choice, and I really like the gobbo in the unit that looks like he is trying to deliver a punch. The Goblin big boss is a wonderful model, and you have done it justice. That is quite the wee Waaagh! you have going on, and it is looker better and better by the month!

Doi: Hate to see you having to play a joker, and hope you get the chance to get some more done. However, you have already accomplished a lot already! Maybe we will see some Lion Riders...finally? :p

And to the rest of the esteemed painters:
Fluffystuff: That is a huge undertaking, and you were able to get the models to come out so well, it is amazing. Lovely work, and I really like the alternating skin tones. I think the use of two kits was very creative, and makes them stand out even more, which is good for so many models! I like how the colors work, because with the blood and vision, they are still dark, yet they are not the typical grimdark. Awesome, as always!

Emperor Norton: I can understand the lows of painting 'more of the same', but I think that you have done a great job with these guys, and still have managed to capture the character of the minis with the paintjob. Looking at the army shot, you can see how the colors work so well together, but have been varied in a way not to make them monotonous, which is a great job on your part.

Emperor Norton: The Wight Lord is my all-time favorite color scheme for Wights/Graveguards. I have always loved the Black/Deep Red look, and you pulled it off very well. Don't be afraid to freehand something, because I have no doubt you will make it look great! Hopefully the troops will be a breeze for you.

Derv: Great job on creating the Dark Elf 'Rune of Fleeing' :p! The freehand is done nicely, but the Executioners are looking ace. The gold in particular is really well done, and really helps the models to have that certain presence on the battlefield. Things are looking great, as always!

Zark The Damned: The Pikemen are looking nice, and I really like how the banner came out, but the Paymaster was a great choice. Nice and full of character, and the colors are well done; I particularly like how the Black has come out with the Pikemen.

Ego Ninja: Festus is looking great. The colors are muted nicely, and the slime is really well done. It really looks the part. The hounds look great with the alternating colors (and look great next to the spawn in the army shot!). Very nice job, and good to see everything coming together.

Magos Explorator: Wow. Your hero is looking amazing, simple as that. I have to say, I think that is your best work yet! The white is nice and smooth, and the cloak is just wonderfully done, and really pops out. I actually noticed the subtle glow on the swords before I read your comments, so it is good to know that I am not going crazy! I like them like that, as they are not overdone, and add to the model instead of taking away from it. It is nice to see the old 4th Ed. archers getting some proper love, and they are looking good as well. Can't wait to see more!

Reik: Two jokers is not a shame! Glad to see your still in it. While you may not like putting up a third hero, this one is a pleasure to see, in its own twisted way! Very fitting of Nurgle, and just looks like an evil Dwarf clinging on to his diseased life. The colors you chose work very well with the model. The only (slight) complaint I would have is that perhaps the chainmail is a little too bright (especially for Nurgle), and even a brown wash might tie it in a little bit better. The centaurs seem promising, but as you said, the pic is a little too blurry to pic everything out.

Bluesabre: That is a big Dark Elf army. A big un. It really has been nice to see this army grow, and the color choice is still an excellent decision. I really like the BSB, and the regal feel you get from the gold in the units. Looking at the entire army, the colors just flow very well, and it is very pleasing to look at (even if it would be death to my orcs!).

Death Korp: Honestly, I cannot tell too much from the photo itself, but things are looking on the up and up. Your colors are giving some good contrast, and help break things up so there is not a metal overload. However, we need better pics! :D

Galen Artorius: That is a great, characterful Army General. The floppy hat is so well done, I did not know you had GSed it! Great use of bitz to give it that extra 'pop', and make it very convincing. Of course, the paint job is nicely done, and works very well.

SuavelyDunn: The Vamp is nicely done! Personally, I like my evil women with some lipstick, but that face is one of the best I have seen for a Lahmian (paint-wise)! I really like the colors scheme you chose for the snake, as it helps to break up the model a bit, and the ghouls, even though I hate the models, look great. The Ghoulkin just looks plain wicked, and again, great job on the face. Looks awesome.

Avian: Already had to surpass some of us with the points, didn't ya? :D You have made a solid entry each and every time since you joined the Tale, and this one is no exception. Usually I am not a fan of the same hair spread across a unit, but these look great, and work well into the overall color scheme of the army, tying the unit to the rest. Great job, as always.

Digital~Punk: Sorry to see you having to joker this month, as your stuff is always great. Glad to see that things are looking up for you though, and you have a good reason for having to use a joker!

Saltpappa: Another great, characterful unit! First, the 'eye' on the scope is hilarious, well done, and looks great. Really adds a little 'something' to the unit! The champion looks great, but it is the overall colors that work so well. The use of the orange really ties everything together, and makes sure that nothing looks out of place for such a bright color. Awesome.

Dino: Great job on the plastic chosen. They really stand out as a unit. The bases on all the warriors are really well done, and help to give them some more 'pop' to the overall model. The army is just looking wonderful, and I can't wait to see it fill out some more!

Darnok: Best. Post. Evah. That is just awesome. Can't wait to see the stuff for this month, but I couldn't help to comment on that.

I believe that is all, but if I missed anyone, yell at me so I can fix that! I will be back later to reply to the great comments that were left, and maybe even put up a WiP shot! Great job everyone, and glad to see so many are still left in. Don't give up yet!

:o I'll try and do better this month :p.

@Derv: Great Executioners, the gold is terrific. Great work

@Reik: Nice work on the centaurs. Looking forward to what you do with the knights.

@Bluesabre: Quite a sizeable force you've got going now. The bsb looks terrific, Nice work on the crossbowmen too.

@Death Korp: What a terrible photo :P Seems to be some pretty nice knights though, although they don't look very tzeentchy, if there's such a thing. Hows the army looking now?

@GalenArtorius: It took me a second, but then i realised that it is valten! Nice conversion work, and the paint job is superb. The hat is a nice touch too.

@SuavelyDunn: Sweet ghouls, the stigorri vampire will fit nicely in them. Other vampire looks great too, sizable force well done.

@Avian: Head swaps make those models great, Skin tone on them is good. Love the background. Bsb looks terrific also.

@Saltpappa: Great unit. The bloke with the eyeball telescope is terrific, and the veteren is great too. keep it up

@ Darnok - that Easter Diorama is awesome, the egg reminds me of Slimer from Gohstbusters (who you gonna call?!)

@ Avian - that BSB is looking very sweet, the yellow is some of the smoothest I've seen from you, especially on the armour & the hands/tentacles underneath the disc are awesome, really characterful

@ Doi - lions.....?

@ Knighta - very nice stuff again, your painting has improved so much since the start of last years Tale it's mad! Very nice freehand on the banner too

As per usual, my entry arrives a week late (too much chocolate eating and hosting of families!) Still, the army's ticking over, and I've still got no fixed plan!

ARMY: Dwarves
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR: 1277
MODEL COUNT: 75(!)

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

MODELS: 9 miners, 4 warriors and a unit champion (although I do feel bad using such a lovely old model for such a lowly rank!)

BUILD/CONVERSION: Models were all built for me (ebay purchases) apart from the champion who was a crew member of an organ gun I bought about ten years ago!

PAINTING: Same schemes of previous months. Used a new technique on the metallics to try and give them more depth, taken from a CMON article here:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/article/aid/649
(though I didn't do all the stages)

STILL TO DO:
Basing, beards and general highlighting! (story of my life with this army!)

HIGHS: Repainting an old figure without stripping it and without suffering!

LOWS: Doing the bare minimum, and taking horrific photos that do not show any of the 'advanced' metallics I was trying out.

POINTS: 154

NEXT MONTH: Starting to work on the rest of the hammerers but failing miserably on the green stuff fu required! I've also got a prototype ironbreaker on the go, so we'll see what happens. Either way, I'll be rounding out the unit of miners to at least 15 and possibly adding another warmachine to the horde (or adding a BSB, it's all dependent on what I can cram in)!

Hello everybody! Nice stuff this month!
As for me, I currently have no more models left to paint, and as I've painted over 2000 pts, does a month without painting for me count as a Joker? ^^ Im waiting for some new models which I ordered online, and with Easter finally over, I sure hope I will get the stuff soon..

Ofcourse not. You sort of buy it back straight away.
You could even say that you're finished already, as you've reached the goal... But just sticking around would be better :)
I'll just note you down for 8 months painted.

Ooh, we have had some new entries!

Knighta: Glad to see some more grom Team Green! Those Black Orcs are looking mighty fine, and look especially good next to your Trolls. I may have to steal that idea for the glyph on the drum.

Sparks: Those Miners are looking great. Hopefully we can get the rest of the warriors to look at as well. Congrats on being able to repaint a mini without having to strip it, without having the detail clogged, and still having it look awesome!

And a few replies to some of the great comments:

@ Nephilim of Sin - very impressive looking BO's

I think that is the first time my BO has been called impressive.....:p. Usually it just makes people run.

A very brutal-looking Orc regiment there, Nephilim!

Thank you sir. I do love the plastic models, so much so that I am actually painting up another regiment as we speak! This will be the first time I have painted something non-Tale related since we started.

Nephilim of Sin: Mean bunch of boys that lot. Deft need something on the banner.

Thank you. I am thinking of adding some Teef, because of their own Big Boss, but that also means that I have to learn black, since he is called 'Blacktoof'. The banner is so well made, it just screams for some detail.

@Nephilim of Sin: Great (white) black orcs. The dags on the armour look awesome, well done, good job.

Glad you like the freehand, I'll admit it was a much-needed learning experience for me, but I am glad I gave it a shot. Of course, I didn't realize until now that I had inadvertently made them a regiment of 'White Orcs', but that does really tie in with my theme.

@ Nephilim
Delivering a punch? If you mean the one in the lower right corner of the pic... look closer...

Um, by 'delivering a punch', I obviously meant aiming to shoot his mate!

Honestly, I blame my laptop, it made the shadows a lot more intense that the pc did, so I couldn't see the arrow. However, the posing on the 'victim' is great.

Hi guys,

Sorry it's a late post this month. I've had everything painted since well before the 1st (Arhalien can testify to that, he played my army) but have only just got round to taking pics + uploading + stuff. Ok apology over lets go.

ARMY: Vampire Elves of Tor Anthir

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

MODELS: 37 skeletons in varying degrees of animation, My casty Vampire lord, corpse cart with necromancer, Spirit-bolt thrower (DoW cannon).

BUILD/CONVERSION: Kitbash between HE spearmen + skeleton warriors for the Skellies. Teclis with a new arm for the casty lord and Straight out of the box for the other two (bolt thrower is a HE eagle claw).

PAINTING: as per usual really white is all the way up from battlegrey. Blue is necron abyss > enchanted blue. Metal is boltgun > badab black > boltgun > mithril. Flesh is Dwarf > delvyan mud > dwarf > elf. Zombies get a couple of thrakka green washes.

STILL TO DO:Nothing this time

HIGHS: I've got loads of skelies now, they look awesome on-mass. Plus I've been painting loads at the mo.

LOWS: Worried I'm going to run out of units/money to get new units.

POINTS: erm.... well....Technicaly it comes to 1026 pts but I've misplaced my Original Vampire lord so... Call it 600pts Braad.

NEXT MONTH: 20 dire wolves, 24 grave guard and maybe some fell bats.

I can't really see the detail of the Corpse Cart, but I have to say I really like how the skeletons have turned out. I have to say I think that is the coolest unit you have done yet, and they are wonderfully done. Great concept, and great execution.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING: Giant

HIGHS: Finally got this done

LOWS: This had to be the most troublesome miniature I ever painted, due to everything that kept happening. Dog got it once and I had to repair it, and it got stolen when playing at a friends place but luckily a few days later someone found the guy trying to sell it so I got it back.

Zujara: That is a horrible situation! At least you got it back, and hopefully it will prove to be as resilient in the game due to the 'rule of cool'. :D

It looks really good. I don't see any damage on it, so it looks like the repair job went well. Also, the skin looks pretty decent, so a great job there as well. That will be the perfect centerpiece to your army!

Well, there hasn't been too much activity over the past few days on the thread, so I figured I would go ahead and do a preview of what I am working on currently:

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p116/Nephilim_of_Sin/Orcs/Month9preview.jpg

Sorry for the delay chaps - thought it about time I put in some feedback this month.

@fluffystuff - beautifully painted zombies and good use of combining two box sets together. Well done on the perseverance over the 50 models! I can only manage to paint 5 at a time, otherwise I will go insane...

@Braad - Good job on the greenskins, like the avatars of war hero models.

@EmperorNorton - Great job on the wardancers - I hadn’t noticed the casting on the drummer till you mentioned it.

@EmperorNorton - like the wraith - I hate the freehanding on the banners as well. What works for me is a lighter banner base colour and then I am able to use a fine pen (0.2mm) to draw the banner on then paint it.

@derv - Brilliant! Like the executioner miniatures and think that they have stood the test of time well. Army looks fantastic.

@Zark the Damned - A good colour scheme well executed. Yellow is a bit of a bad colour for me - always tends to go green for some reason. Sorry, am rambling now - noble is well painted and I like the idea of naming your characters - do you use them in another gaming system?

@Ego Ninja - Truly disgusting... In a well painted way! Like the slime effect.

@Magos Explorator - Neatly painted ranger, ties in well with the archer unit.

@Reik - Nurgle dwarf - Cool! Who produces the miniature? From your army list, it looks like you’re nearly finished - well done.

@Bluesabre - Good painting on the elves - I like the dragon banner. Nice army you’ve got there.

@Death Korp - Good painting on the knights - are they the new plastic ones?

@GalenArtorius - Great painting on the general - well done. I can’t sculpt, but I do appreciate the work on the hat & flowers.

@Avian - I really like the flesh colours on the marauders - are they Vallejo paints? Army shot is a bit blurry, but they look excellent - well done on the painting & catching up!

@saltpappa - Brilliant - I do like the old dwarf models, they have some real character. Beautifully painted as well.

@Dino - Good job on the chaos! I am jealous of chaos armies who can have 8 figures count to over 200 points!

@Nephilim of Sin - Like the Black Orc rabble - well done on painting them 3 times! I know how frustrating it can be when the initial scheme doesn’t work - I have lost count of how many miniatures lie in my study part painted because the scheme hasn’t worked - well done on sticking to task.

@Darnok - Yaarrgggh an egg! LOL!

@Avian - He looks great & you say he’s not yet finished?

@Knighta - Good work on the Black Orcs - good contrast on red & green.

@sparks - Dwarfs look great - good work on the flesh.

@Firestorm Falcon - Major entry this month! Like the skeletons - makes me wish I’d done more conversion works on mine.

@Zujara - What a tale & glad that you have him back. Looks well painted so good job on the repair works!

Phew!

SuavelyDunn – Pfew, your army is getting so large… Wish I could paint that fast… But it looks great! One of my favourites here, I think.

Many thanks - I chose vampires as Army Painter works well with all of the unit choices. I aren't that fast in real life...

@SuavelyDunn: That's a lot of undead. Quality work on all them, I like the skin in the ghouls a lot!

Thank you - FAP Strong Tone is my saviour!

SuavelyDunn: Very nice all round. I like the simple but effective paint scheme on these. Are you using FAP Strong Tone for the shading?

Yes, I find that it works really well with the colour scheme I had in mind for them. Doesn't do so well on blue though.

@ SuavelyDunn: The army is looking better and better. Very good choice of colours, they go really well together and make for a nice unified appearance.

Thanks Avian - only problem is that you tend to run out of those colours at inconvenient times!

@ SuavellyDunn - gorgeous indead again, that army is looking amazing now, the numbers are really racking up & when ranked up together they are looking extremely impressive (i really need to find that post where you told me how you painted them so I can save it to my computer!)

Thank you for that! I have started a "painting book" so that I know which colours I have used on each unit. Helps when I have to go back to them, or buy more figures...

SuavelyDunn: Unit and characters have come together nicely; the whole army blends together brilliantly.

Thanks!

Cheers Nephilim, I am really proud of the Lahmian, she looks better in the flesh than in the photo. I really must learn how to take better pictures.

@SuavelyDunn: Sweet ghouls, the stigorri vampire will fit nicely in them. Other vampire looks great too, sizable force well done.

Thanks Knighta.

I have unfortunately had an operation on my right hand this month and am having to type mainly left handed (slowly & constantly correcting errors!) and also is painful to glue or paint - damn. Am cheating a bit on this months entry (ghosts & bats) which don't require a large amount of painting, mainly dry brushed.

Hope that everyone else is okay & enjoying painting!

I keep hearing about 'army painter'... what's that?

Kodamas

Army painter is by Warlord games and is basically a can of dip with you can dip models into to give instant shading. Works good on Tyranids etc.

Comes in 3 different strengths IIRC.

Great work all round here guys only 4 months left keep in there.

Hi Braad,

As Kodamas says, it is a form of wood stain which is packaged for wargamers/painters. Don't think that it is the same people as Warlord Games, but I might be wrong on that one.

If you go here (www.thearmypainter.com) then it will tell you more about the product. It has some helpful tutorials & links to sites who have painted some fantastic stuff using it.

Doesn't always work on certain colours, in my opinion, with blue being one example. I use the strong tone.

It's not cheap, but has helped me paint the units in my army quickly - much quicker than if I painted them the traditional way. I think that the results are reasonable for rank & file painting. It also varnishes your figure at the same time, but I add a coat of Matt Varnish which helps tone down the shine.

Hope that this helps!

Thanks for the big tutorial, but I think when Kodamas said "dip models", I already knew enough and lost interest :p

@fluffystuff: That’s one creepy unit you’ve put together. Must say I have never thought that those models could look anything other then comical but you have proved me wrong. Great job as always.

@Braad: Hope your green paint pots never go empty. I love your work never stops to amaze me. And your wip wolves are looking top-notch.

@EmperorNorton: Really nice work this month. The wardancers came out very nicely and the bsb is very well done can’t wait to see the freehand on it.

@derv: Your army is looking very intimidating… well I guess it’s just how DE should look like. Great job

@Zark the Damned: Those pikes rock and the Noble /which is one of my fav. GW minis/ is really painted in a great way. Nice job

@Ego Ninja: Great job all along from the feet of Festus to the doggies tails /even though it sound weird it really was supposed to be a compliment/

@ Magos Explorator: Love yer work each month I fall in love with your work more and more /despite the fact I really don’t like elves/

@Bluesabre: Your work is really sweet thing to look at you freehand never stops to amaze me

@Death Korp: From what I can see they look really nicely. Any chance for a army shot?

@GalenArtorius: Great conversion and painting.

@SuavelyDunn: Must say you’re a painting maniac /in a good way that is/ Top speed and quality. Just great

@Avian: Whenever I look on your work a see ale the thing I love in warhammer… your units have the same atmosphere as those old drawings from WFRP /the first edition that is / My heart really grows then. Great job

@saltpappa: OK the old dwarf minis are great but when their painted to such standard as yours they just go to a new level of greatness.

@Dino: Man they’re blue in a very blue way:D They look really nicely.

@Nephilim of Sin: I love your scheme. This month’s Black Orcs are no exception. Great job all around.

@Darnok: You really made me smile but on the other hand I just can’t look the same on the eggs the’ve started to frighten me.

@Knighta: Your Borcs look great, really menacing.

@sparks: Marvelous flesh-tone very nice painting

@Firestorm Falcon: Those dead elves look great. Lovely concept and even better execution.

@zujara: I’m pretty surprised how can someone steal a 30cm giant I would understand a dwarf but a giant?? It’s good he returned to you now he is definitely stronger:D Great painting.

Replies:
@derv: Thank you kindly. I’m really glad I’m back:D
@Avian: Thank you
@Jonahmaul: Thank you! I’ve uploaded new pic of centaurs in my post on the first page I hope those are batter
@Bluesabre:Thanks I think the same. He looks quite Nurgely
@ Nephilim of Sin: Thanks. I’ve fixed the mail on the dwarf really missed that when painted him. The centaurs were photographed again but most of the colours look flat so I’ll have to paint them again
@Knighta:Thanks, I hope not to disappoint you with the knights next month.
@ SuavelyDunn: I’m afraid it’s not produced any more. IIRC it’s a marauder miniature but would have to check it once again he was a part of a box set Dwarf Renegades just like the other dwarf I’ve showed.

I’d like to announce that as promised I’ve changed the pictures of centaurs in my initial post.

@Avian - I really like the flesh colours on the marauders - are they Vallejo paints? Army shot is a bit blurry, but they look excellent - well done on the painting & catching up!
Thank you, thank you. Any colour you don't recognise is a Vallejo Model Colour, yes.

@Avian - He looks great & you say he’s not yet finished?
He is finished now, I even took him to a tournament this weekend. I also painted up my last unit of Warhounds and I'm now considering taking a week off since I've done more than 250 pts this month. :D

Hi to the studio of tale painters, guess I’m going to have to play a joker for this month painted my entry twice but just don’t like the way its turned out , nearly gave up on the whole tale but once I pulled my thumb out of my **** and stopped sulking realised I still owed you guys some backing

Fluffystuff; wow another top notch entry really like the way the bone stands out under the zombie skin love the light brown material and the way you’ve done the zombie eyes really soulless (the eye’s not the paint job)

Braad ; blimey big month both points wise and in model count and I Couldn’t manage one model , smooth and consistent painting and plenty of support coming from you as well you have a great army loads of character

Emperor Norton; great wardancers and fantastic bases, the first picture really shows what a crisp paint job you’ve done on them especially the loincloths and the brown strapping

The bsb is looking good go for it with the freehand I’ve found it a really rewarding thing to do I just copied a design and went over it a couple of times and I’m sure you can pull it off but major kudos for doing two armies anyway

Derv; another really seemingly effortless entry again loads of little things I keep noticing and admiring , I just wish my chain mail and gold could turn out like yours

Zark the damned; really well modelled pike men I wouldn’t have thought to lower the pikes on the front ranks ’ nice work on the eyes of Mandell ( I really struggle with eyes ) and another character and individual army

Ego ninja; great work on Festus especially the face which has come out really well and the army as whole is really taking shape

Magos explorator; wow great job on your hero loads to admire the sword , gems and armour really wish I could see that across the table

Reik; well done on getting back in the saddle now I know how tough that can be , the centaurs though look great as does the army and love the effort you’ve put into the bases

Blue sabre; fantastic work on the banner and great model count from you and done to such a high standard army looks great really strong and coherent painting

Death Korp; very bold knights really decadent looking cleverly understated banner I always end up with an image that’s too big but I really like the effect you have on yours, and the red as whole really makes the unit pop

GalenArtorius; another solid entry excellent work on the hat, wouldn’t have noticed It didn’t come with the model until you said. The horses eyes, reigns and the writing on the shield really show your skills as a painter

Suavely dunn; great ghouls they’ve come out really well (as have your vampire and goulkin) but wow what an army

Avian; I found painting my marauders difficult to add interest to but you seem to have carried it off effortlessy love the feel they have and the way you’ve done the skin

Saltpappa; fantastic painting again and loads of little details to admire and notice each time I look but that “big eye” is brilliant as is the green gem and your gold work

Dino; another painter really showing his class with the extra attention to bases finishing off a steady and well executed paint job

Nephilim of sin; great work on the orks especially the dags on the armour and although simple the banner feels just right in its simplicity can’t wait to see an army shot but what a model count

Knighta; congrats on a crisp clean and very neat paint job really solid work on the banner and drumskin and a very solid and well army gathering

Sparks; really earthy miners makes sense not to have to clean a unit of miners yours feel just right but I’m sure the army if painted like your miners will look fab

Firestorm falcon; christ 37 models in one month and I’m unable to finish 1, and all painted to a good standard with loads of little details to admire major pat on the back

Zujara; blimey a model with individual fluff (or hairball) does he have a nickname? And do you have a wry smile with the stuff in a bag attack? Back on track great work in particular on the skin

Zujara
22-04-2009, 00:50
@Nephilim: I think he is a bit lucky, at least for now. He headbutted the last wound off of a Star Dragon, then proceeded to die to Swordmasters, fell down on them and took out a bunch.

@Braad: Thanks! It's a big morale booster getting him back since it means I can continue here!

@SuavelyDunn: Glad you can't see where I repaired, I still can but that's because I know where to look I guess

@Reik: It was at a friends place, who was showing some new guys the game. My guard was lower than it should have been compared to when at a store playing.

@nagged: No nickname yet, thinking of names isn't my strong point, and he hasn't stuffed anything in his bag yet but I will be sure to grin like an idiot when he does!

Anyways since I was put behind with last month, this month instead of my big Orc unit I will be doing my Battle Standard and a Doomdiver, with 2 improvised crewman.

Some overdue feedback for everyone:

@ fluffystuff - They may have driven you mad, but it was worth it! These are great, a range of colours and conversions for variety, but a pair of cohesive units at the end. Very gruesome.

@ Braad - Good job on the Avatars goblin hero. A good units to go with him.

@ EmperorNorton (WE) - Wardancers are looking great and contrast well with the naturalistic colours of the treemen/dryads.

@ EmperorNorton (VC) - I really like that figure, and your paiting compliments the ancient feeling of it. Look forward to seeing the freehand.

@ derv - Great Executioners. The mettalics are very well done, being a rich colour but subdued and not shiny. And I like your purples as well.

@ Zark the Damned - I have always loved the WHQ Noble figure (wish I had one :( ) and you have done a great job. And the pike regiment looks great too, the banner is very nice.

@ Ego Ninja - Good work, a slimy maggoty feel to Festus (which is what he needs, ain’t it).

@ Magos Explorator - Another great WHQ figure (can’t beat the classics, can you?) he’s perfect for a Nagarythe Noble (doesn’t look so goody-two-shoes as other HE Nobles).

@ Reik - Centaurs are looking good for work in progress (only thing I could say is, the saddles still look a bit saddle-y. But I wouldn’t know what to suggest to cover them up).

@ Bluesabre - That army shot made me go wow! A great, different look for DE. Freehand on banners is great.

@ Death Korp - I feel your pain about ranking up cavalry, trying to do some knights at the moment (stupid sticking out feet  ) But the unit looks great, the greater use of gold makes them look more important than the footsloggers.

@ SuavelyDunn - Great character models. The colour for the ghoulkin vampire is a nice alternative to usual schemes.

@ Avian - Two nice units, solid and consistent painting. Good work.

@ saltpappa - More dwarfs that make me want to throw in my brushes. You really do justice to the individual character of each of these older miniatures. Bravo.

@ Dino - Your Raven Host is looking great all together. Like you, I’m trying to resist painting other armies at same time!

@ Nephilim of Sin - The unit looks great. Using the dags and such instead of highlights works well to make them look more veteran.

@ Darnok’s Egg - That is probably the most bizarre thing I have seen for a long time! Still, it made me laugh.

@ Knighta - Great orcs. They will make a really good central unit in your army when they’re all done.

@ sparks - The unit is looking good (I’m with you on doing the bare minimum - sucks, don’t it?). Thanks for the link, I might try that technique when I get the new Greatswords for my final unit.

@ Firestorm Falcon - Some great painting. I agree, those skeletons do look daunting as a unit - quite intimidating.

@ Zujara - Glad you got him back OK, the effort you’ve put in to him shows.

Thanks for all the comments back, I’m glad that Marshal Gerhardt was well received. I don't think I'm alone when I say that I much prefer character models to lots of RnF. That's why I have so much admiration for the armies here, particularly the horde armies.

But damn GW. Damn their eyes! The pics of all the lovely new plastic goodness for the Empire means the next few months are going to be expensive! I will definetly be advance ordering a couple of the Greatsword boxsets, and I don’t think I will be able to resist this fella:

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii145/pjkernow/INCPS_EmpireCaptain_250x243.jpg
Little bit of GS for another hat and some feathers to make him Marshal Gerhardt on foot methinks.

The other champion (with pistol and hammer as seen in the rumours forum) is also too good to turn down. Then there’s at least to 2 Steam Tanks..... maybe another for a war altar conversion.... [has to go and think of excuses to tell the missus]

@Zark the dammed: I was looking forward to seeing these guys, great pikemen.

@EgoNinja: Great work here, I really like the dark tones.

@Mangos Explorator: Nice elves, fantastic detail work on the hero.

@Reik: That hero is pritty crazey looking, nice centaurs as well.

@Bluesabre: Another fantastic looking darkelf army, great job on the banner.

@Deathkorp: Great looking warriors, a bit blurry though.

@GalenArtorius: Fantastic work there, I love the added detail.

Right folks, I will come back & comment on stuff thats come since I was last here soon but just to drop in & say I'm still alive! I've decided that the LM have had it! It's really getting me down trying to keep all 3 armies going in the Tales & since this was the army I was just adding to they've gonna walk the plank so I can concentrate in my other stuff. On that note I hope to have my DE stuff posted before the weekend when I go away or if not then Monday.

Thanks for your comments, everybody. I'll see if I can find the time for some commenting of my own this weekend.

@EmperorNorton: Great looking wardancers, love the posing. What do you have planned for the vampires banner?

Since my army is from Mousillon I want to have the grail as their emblem, preferably a grail filled with blood.
Since I can't draw at all, though, I'm afraid to try. So I'll have to disappoint everybody looking forward to it - it's probably not getting done soon.

I hope these will be done soon, though:
http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k395/EmperorNorton668/DSC01407.jpg
However, there's still a lot to do: highlighting the green (example of what I want to achieve on the left), details in yellow and red, metal parts, bases.
Since I ran out of Graveyard Earth the bases will be difficult, especially since I still can't walk properly and therefore I'm not sure if I can pick some up at the FLGS during the next couple of days.

There's some hope that I'll be able to finish these, too:
http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k395/EmperorNorton668/DSC01406.jpg

That'd mean that the army reaches the critical 2000 point mark, which would give me more freedom to finish my VC. And my first ever fully painted army, of course (disregarding the remaining 1500 or so points of Wood Elves I have lying around).

I am still alive, too. Unfortunately (at least for the tale) we moved from our flat into a house. The only things I got painted this month are walls. ;)

My minis are still too much WIP to let them count as finished, I am afraid. So please mark me down with a Joker this month. I think I will reclaim it later, but currently I am really lacking the time.

Keep painting!

Ok, about time I posted some comments :p

@ fluffystuff: Very nice. The zombie and militia boxes work so well together. Though Knighta still holds the record for the most models painted in a month. He painted 60 slaves for his Skaven last year.

@ Braad: Once again I feel sorely tempted to pick up that AoW goblin for my lord.... Great stuff from you once again.

@ EmperorNorton (WE): Nice work from you once more, despite you not enjoying it once more :p. The army is shaping up nicely.

@ EmperorNorton (VC): Good job. Any ideas on what you're putting on the banner? And don't just say freehand symbol:p

@ derv: Excellent work. I've always said that the Dark Elves have the best metal infantry models in the game (Executioners and Black Guard) and you've shown why.

@ Zark the Damned: Nice job. Mandel looks great. What model is it?

@ Ego Ninja: Great job on these guys. The slime on Festus is really nice, how did you get the effect?

@ Magos Explorator: The hero looks fantastic, the purple cloak is really well done. I can see why he'd be more fun that the monopose archers!

@ Reik: What a way to make your return. Centaur marauder conversions and what is now possibly my favourite ever Nurgle hero. Those are really ace models.

@ Bluesabre: You can't beat a background story like the ones for these guys :p. The banner to follow is really well done, Good job

@ Death Korp: Nice job (from what we can see :p). can't wait to see next month's work

@ GalenArtorius: Thought I recofnised Valten in there. Excellent conversion and an excellent paint job, well done.

@ SuavellyDunn: I can't believe you paint so much so quickly. Great job.

@ Avian: The head swaps from the horseman are really effective, great job. Now you've got me wanting to see what you could do with a giant!

@ saltpappa: Excellent work, the eyeball in the scope on the first picture is genius.

@ Dino (WoC): Fantastic conversion for the Chosen, are we going to see anymore of them?

@ Nephilim of Sin: Great stuff, but now I'm more interested in seeing the converted Big 'Uns!

@ Knighta: Good job, the red armour came out nicely.

@ Firestorm Falcon: Excellent stuff, the skeleton conversions are ace.

@ Zujara: About time this guy made his appearance, going through wars shouldn't be an excuse for tardiness:p. In all seriousness though, great work, you cant even see any damage where the dog got to it.

New painters? I think you can hold on to that spell for a couple of months. We're in need of a resurrect painters spell at the present time :p. Or at the very least something to stop the bleeding :p

I should hopefully be at the stage where I only need final highlights on clothing and basing on my giant by the end of the night. You'll have to get rid of us old painters first!!

It looks like I'm going to have to post a double bumper painting bonanza next month because i have no chance this month.

Long story short i had 6 (!!!) paintings and an animation due this month for uni, and an additional painting for a local art fundraiser (still not finished) so no time to do anything else. Although i did paint up a couple of witch hunters and a german shepard (sp?) for a DnD campaign, so it wasn't a complete loss of a month.

Place D6 new painters into the tale.

Not sure it'll work on me for the next Tale, just too hard doing more than one army & time is probably going to be strapped next year which is a shame as i'd like to do two armies (although I was planning OK & there's not a great deal of models to paint......oh no, i'm already crumbling!!)

Not sure it'll work on me for the next Tale...

I should add "can't cast on himself" to the description :p
I just don't have the core units left to build an actual army, so I won't be joing next tale either. 2009/10 will be a period of painting heroes and buildings...

Maybe an army of the dreaded building-people...

But before fantasising about things to come, lets first focus here and finish this.
I just found out that I need only about 40 points this month to paint enough to stay on schedule. While tomorrow afternoon will be filled with war, the morning should allow for some time to finish at leas one or two models... another 2 or 3 the day after and that should keep me covered.

Braad, feel free to drop by and paint my Orcs at any time.

My fanciful plans were up to five armies (incl. one 40K army), but that has since been scaled down to two, and even that may be more than I can handle.

I'll try and do an uber post at the start of next month with 400 points-ish- things have not been very good for the last couple of weeks. Not dropping out though!

@ Braad - you can do TOFP just with heroes, I know that's not quite the point of it but i'm sure nobody would object

@ EmporerNorton - 5 armies is crazy! I was doing 3 until last week & found it a real struggle to keep up, especially once you lose motivation as it's so hard to get back if you've got mountains of miniatures to paint. Two is not too bad though (unless it's two horde armies!)

I was thinking about that same thing, and using the rules in the 6th edition rulebook scenerio for (I think it was called) the 7 knights...

But on the other hand, I'll be starting a new job soon, so I don't know if I actually get the time to do so... and the buildings pose another problem there...

But I'll see. Need to ask Harry first anyway (if he continues the tale, considering his lack of free time) since he is boss.

Well, I don't know about buildings, but my next year in the Tale will be quite character heavy as well and certainly not a legal, stand alone army (being more of an expansion to my WoC army).

Tale of Heroic Painters perhaps? Painting a hero a month might be a nice option in the spirit of the 7 knights senario.. i may be rank and filed out by the end of this one.:p

Yep, 5 would be crazy, and it even didn't take me that long to figure that out.
I can manage two, barely at times, with a fairly low model count, and I want to do two again, although I probably should spend less time during the next twelve to fifteen months on painting.
Until yesterday I was set on doing Warriors of Chaos and Ogre Kingdoms, but now I feel I should do a 40K army instead of the Ogres.

I should hopefully be at the stage where I only need final highlights on clothing and basing on my giant by the end of the night. Being on time isn't a good thing for me, generally means I'll be posting late for some unseen reason or I'll finish on time, not do anything for the rest of the month and forget to start up the next month's painting until half way through the next month . I wonder which one it will be this time...

Doi

I just had to open my mouth didn't I? Only got to that stage an hour ago :p. Not going to make any rash comments on dates again, it will only end up being a lie :D

Darnoks WHF Zombie Pirates - Painting of March 2009

Unit 1: Vampire Fleet Captain with Ex-Parrot ... 110 points
Unit 2: Syreen ... 90 points

This months painting total: 200 points

And another late entry from me. For this month I painted only two models, partly because of lazyness, partly because I wanted to do them. One of them is this pretty Siren, being Clarissa from the Warlords range of models (http://www.battlefield-berlin.de/shop/index.php?cat=WG991&product=REA14274&sid56B6977983A2499CAB608BB33B945735=ef867d2d3065a6 a51e0a9da9c9d1a2c7). I tried to achieve a ghostly look, painting her with negative accents, for that "glowing from the inside"-effect. I don't think I did very well, but so what? Learning is about trial and error, I'll do better next time. Anyway, here are the pictures:

http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/ff337/Darnok_2008/Sirene_5.jpg

http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/ff337/Darnok_2008/Sirene_3.jpg

http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/ff337/Darnok_2008/Sirene_2.jpg

The second model for this month is Razig, also from the Warlord range (http://www.battlefield-berlin.de/shop/index.php?cat=WG991&product=REA14029). He is still WIP, but fulfills the "at least 3 colours on the model"-requirements. And to be honest, I'm not thrilled by the model, he may or may not remain in this state for quite some time. Not completely done so far are all the metal areas, the hair, cloak and belt and of course the base. But here we go:

Hey, those are pretty cool models! :) I think it is great that people are using alternative manufacturers. Sadly I haven't found a lot that fit with my Chaos army, but today I saw that Maelstrom is stocking Avatars of War, so there might be a Chaos Lord for me in the not too far future.

The day is nearly over here, and after a busy (national holiday), fun (birthday, didn't get orcs though), but also dramatic day here (see also Dutch news headlines), it's time for a monthly overview of the tale.

Well, this is what it looks like right now:

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh299/Braad-82/Warseer/tale01-05-09.jpg

I hope I didn't miss anyone. I still miss 11 painters...
Of these, Harry, niibl, silverstu and warlord ghazkull are on the verge of getting their 3rd joker....
That would mean only getting an 'honourable mention' at the start of next month.

6 confirmed jokers. Better luck next time.

We got 2 confirmed drop-outs. Chicken Pig said he quit the hobby, and Jonahmaul found 1 army for the ToFP enough to deal with (though still an valorous attempt to try more!).

But also 23 times a nicely painted bit of army. Excellent job on those!

Americans still got a couple of hours to paint and post, so maybe there are still a few updates coming, but I need to work first thing tomorrow (no deskjob, so no computer access) and it's bedtime now...
@ Avian, I'll get the same stuff as last time ready again as soon as I get back from work and sent the links to you, okay?

I hate posting so late in the month. I don't do dead lines very well.

This month my post is a Maneater for my OK's.

I went with a different look since he's from a different tribe.

They call him "Banga" and he's armed with brace hand guns.

I used the head from the Mord-Pit fighter Ogre.

His tribe is the "Fire Mountain" tribe, a tribe base at the bottom
of an active volcano. The tribe is look down upon for dipping their
food in lava before its eaten. Before battle each Ogre from the
Fire Mountain tribe cover their arms in ash from the mountain that
they keep in a bag.

I'll get a group shot in next month.

Lovely painting from everyone this month, and sorry I haven't given any specific comments.
I'm afraid that I'm dropping out of the tale:(
I've had a manic couple of months which has now resulted in me getting a new job, so I'll have much less time to paint. I've also sold the army, so no more photos.
Keep up the good work everyone, because I'll still stop by to check out the armies.

Those are quite drastic measures you're taking... Completely sold it?
Too bad, your army was really great.
May I ask for the reasoning to actually sell it, and not just shelf it until time comes up? Personally I would rather sell my soul then my orcs...

At the time I really needed the money, so they had to go. After all, I can always paint more models. I was really sorry to see them go because they were painted with a little bit of love ( just mix it in with flow aid and paint retarder, it's great ). But they were only ever going to sit on my shelves, and this way they may see some action. It would be great if I saw them in years to come winning a tournament somewhere, or on the net.
Mannfred is the only one that I'm keeping ( he wasn't part of the tale), he's may favourite.

Good to get some word from you. Looking forward to seeing new stuff.
Any idea on when you'll be getting the next thread up?

@ silverstu
Great to see some new stuff from you. It was already a hard blow to the VC team to see fluffystuff leave, but this makes up for that a bit.
In any subsequent postings you'll be showing up as a full 2-joker poster again, instead of in the "taggin' along" group.

I don't want to be relegated to the tagging along group.

I know the feeling, I had to put the proverbial boot into my proverbial rear end to get stuff done on quite a few occasions this Tale. Despite having worked hard to get the majority of my army done at the start I still see a big unit of wolfriders to go...

@ Darnok: Very nice. The Vampire (and his ex-parrot!) are especially nice. I think the Syreen would have come out better if you had started from a very very light blue rather than a stark white, the highlights are well placed though. Maybe even keep the white but only in openings like the mouth and eyes? Might emphasise the 'glowing from the inside' effect more

@ BigJon: I like the head swap a lot, adds something new to the model. Being slightly smaller than the normal head (I think?) emphasises his bulk too which I like.

@ silverstu: Once again you've got some top knotch work there, even if it isn't quite finished :p. How did you paint the exposed wood on the shields? And this one I know I've asked before, but how did you paint the light blue? I want to fiddle with a few models when this Tale is over and its a colour I wouldn't mind trying

@ StormCrow: Wow, those are really nice. Is the Joker yours as well? That first painting is ace (particularly the man in the fire spirit thing :p) and the daemon prince sculpt is just absolutely stunning. Is it a complete scratch sculpt or does it have a base model (I'm guessing the later because of the brownish colour of the main armature)?

Anyway, the opening post looks good as it is, doesn't it?

But now for my entry... dreaded, I also haven't got anything finished yet :(
But do I try to finish something this week, as I need only about 40 points, or do I stick to my tradition and post when the thread is up and try to buy it back next month?

Decisions, decisions...

Thanks- glad you like them-[I'm rather chuffed myself- i plan on making them rather good by the time I'm finished]. The basis for the colouring on the VC is using a white base coat and going for a washed out, pale look so the wood is done with thinned graveyard earth with some light shading with Devlan Mud in the recesses. I might highlight up a little more with graveyard earth + either white or bleached bone. The blue is more worked and is what i concentrate on-it takes me about 30 mins for each model. The initial layer is a pale blue- spacewolf grey with regal/storm blue mix[i mixed a whole pot for the army. It's painted on thined down and then I use the blue wash to deepen the colour in the recesses- in my log the command for the GG are at this stage. Then I highlight up adding white to the mix. The trick I think is lots of thin layers- the paint should be thin enough that it fades back a bit as it dries. Basically as the layers build up so does the intensity of colour. The last 3-4 layer is just straight white thinned down. takes a bit of experimentation but basically thin layers is how you get the intensity of colour. It's quite forgiving too as it's only really visable after a few layers are applied to the same area. Long winded post or what! Have a play - I'm working on getting a strong red for my eldar[I've not posted yet] but doing it over a black basecoat and again many layers seems to be the key. Hope it helps.;)
