Ashim

I have been playing warhammer on and off for many years.. and now I'm 20 years old.. I guess its not old.. but som how I feel I'm getting to old for the game.. most people I see in the shop is like 15-16 years old.. so here it is..

how old are you?

tzeentchgiant
05-05-2005, 15:15
I'm 16 years old, but I would say the majority of players are below that age, I've been playing warhammer for nearly 5 years now and have no mind to stop soon.

TG

P.S I think that this sounds like a sort of pervy question no?

I'm 17 years old. I think most players are under my age like tzeentchgiant said but the true passioned players that favour the whole hobby is older than I am (I'm one of them).

i'm 24.

I think that the average fantasy player will be older then the average 40k player - fantasy average maybe being about 16-18, and the 40k being about 13-16.

tzeentchgiant
05-05-2005, 17:16
I think your fantasy average is correct however 40k really does mainly appeal to youngsters so I would change that estimate from 13-16 to 11-14, cause after 15 you're screwed for your parents money, or at least I was.

On Portent 40k players were, on average, a year or two older than fantasy players according to some polls done by The Phoenix on the old Portent.

I doubt that those accurately reflect the true average ages of warhammer players though. Different forums have different age groups. GW main forums, for example, appear to have a much lower average age than Portent does.

I'm 16. Started when I was 11/12.

Typical immature teenage sentiment :p . Actually I'm sixteen aswell, and I think for fantasy players the average is about 17-18. 40k is definately lower, although I wouldn't go as low as 11-14, my guess is about 13-16.

Typical immature teenage sentiment :p

I reserve the right to be immature, it's in the constitution :p

But as far as ages on portent goes, I think you'll find (or at least you would on the old forums) that this is a mature and aged comunity of pensioners and OAPs,

or at least we are compaired to GW forums.

I'm coming up on 32 years old and the guys I play with are all about that same age. Of course we don't waste our time hanging out at GW stores where you can't eat, smoke, drink, curse and throw things. Not to mention the lack of good music in places like that! And by "good music" I mean music that 13-18 year olds haven't been instructed by MTV to appreciate at some shallow level.

Damn, I'm old. :)

20 years, and most of my regular opponents are about the same age. I play for about 5-6 years now (damn, quite a long time if I start thinking about it), and I still love the game. I definitely keep playing the coming years, both fantasy and 40k.

Im 20 and i started when i was 10 back in 1995. I also find quite a large number of Fantasy players are quite old (30+) as they can afford the hobby.

We don't have any gw store here just retailers(sp?),so you don't see the average

i'm 30, and have been into GW since i was about 10, first tings i bought were Imperial Guard cannon thing on tracks with 4 barrels (don't remeber name) and Squat Thudd gun, as well as fantasy stuff before that that didn't have slotta bases!!!

Most people i know are around my age, however as noted above i don't hang around in GW (no disrespect to younger players), in fact i very rarely even buy stuff from their stores, so i don't see much of the younger end of the gaming spectrum.

I was in Aberdeen once and the store (which is the best one i have visited in UK) was overrun with kids (10-15) made me want to depart before i had planned.

You lot make me feel like a real old bas*ard

50 next birthday I started playing WHFB in 82 after buying 2nd edition in my local hobby shop. The shop was in Wigan a couple of shops away from a sports shop called JJ Bradburn which was later bought by the company that became the JJB sports empire. The name came from that one shop.

I play with people of similar age.

Most of the people I play with are 24 +/- a year or so.

I myself am 17 years of age, though I have played in two different areas of the country and have found that in contrast to you I can't get younger players into the hobby, they just can't seem to get into it. The attention span for painting and modeling and learning the rules just isn't there with the kids I know within my age group. They can't seem to see the point in buying a ton of expensive models that don't even have any color to them. So, my agerage opponent ends up being about 30 years old.

Hello people/kids :) (NO flame intended, think humor) I am 61, several of my regular opponents...........62, 57, 56.........then there are the guys at the GW store on Tuesday night......two are in their young teens, eight or so are mid to 20s to mid 30s.

It is possible to outgrow (mentally) GW's systems......."tastes change" as we grow older, more experienced with games, gaming and life. IMHO, many GW systems gamers are not going to be lifetime "wargamers".

There are likely groups of non GW gamers (some will be ex-GW users). There are several decent sets of rules (in print too). Several companies make equal(to GW) quality minies. Several give you more for your money too :D

>>>>>I'm 19, and have been playing since 15 or 16, somethe like that. A majority of players I play against are my own age or 3 or 4 years older; although we are recruiting some young'ns around 14 right now :p . An average would be hard to do here; but I think a majority of teenagers are surpirsed to just how many thirty year olds, and older, play.

And I would agree that the genearal age of 40k is younger.

21, been playing for 10 years on and off.
At our store it's quite varied, there's the 11-14yr olds in high quantities, but I only really see the people on vet's night where it's all 16-21 in the majority, with a smattering of 25+

which is about 4 years after i started playing 40k....

I'm 30. It's really wierd that i'm twice as old as many of the other people on this board, and yet there are people here twice as old as i am. :D

Started with 40k...ummm....in 1990, i think. Maybe late 89. Fantasy battle came to my attention a couple of years later, but didn't actually play it until around 94 or so.

It's also really wierd to realize i've been playing since :0) was still learning to crawl.

I was thinking about that recently, wondering if I'll carry on with the hobby past uni and into my life as a working stiff. Recently I had about six months out of the game, and for a while I thought that was me out of it forever. Then when Portent died and I had that period of reminiscing about all the good times I'd had on the board (call me sad if you like, but you all did it) and I had the compulsion to dust off my armies and start again. I guess it's one of those things you never can tell with, but I really hope I carry on with it through my life.

Who knows, in fifty years I might be taking Crazy Harborc's place as Portent's resident crazy old man :p . Only time will tell...

I'm 29 now and started Tabletops when i was around 17 or 18, i.e. i started with GW games.

In my group most regular people are mid 20s ranging up to people over 50 but this may be due because we appreciate some kind of maturity (even when arguing over rules and getting a little bit angry at each other).
I don't know if a 16 year old would fit in our regular group because no one from this age has approached us and we're not looking for players so far under our age.

I see younger players mostly at local tournaments but even then they're at least 16.

Forgotmytea
06-05-2005, 10:46
Yeah, I think a poll would be good. BTW, I'm 17, been playing for the last 7-8 years. I hope I'll be playing W/H for ages to come, and if the models get too expensive, hey, it just means I'll have more time to express my literary feelings by writing more stories and fluff :).

Yeah, you can't edit in a poll after the thread is created.

I don't think a poll is really necessary at this point. i've found that age polls generally end up with the same kind of responses afterwards anyway, so you might as well save the server a teensy bit of load. :)

I want many more years of gaming. I do not want to "be there" when minies are created by/on and moved by/on a PC. For myself, assembly and painting, well mainly painting, is an important part of wargaming.

You're totally right Bortus, and I think that's the best first posts I've ever seen.

Crazy Harborc: I don't really think it's likely we'll get to a point where the game is done by PC exclusively, because then it wouldn't be Warhammer anymore. It's be Warhammer: The PC Game, and as fun as that might be I don't think it's even possible that will replace the proper game if there are still dedicated players around.

Wise words. As I approach the start of my life (that's 40 for all you youngsters) I think I've passed the stage where the kid inside is in danger of dying. At least I hope so. Now I am looking forward to indoctrinating my kids. I can't ever see me quiting this game.

Slyracoon......I agree about GW systems never going to only on PC. I was speaking of the rest of the minies and rules for the "hobby of wargaming". Well, GW "might" like the idea, IF they can find a way to make us rent but not own the CDs needed.

IMHO, groups that have adult, adults is more likely to produce some lifetime hardcore wargamers. (Not flamebait, just what has happened around here....so far) Heck, over the years I've met far more adult, adults who are new to wargaming than well, kids.

EDIT TIME I am really NOT trying to stir the stick. It's just that most of the younger gamers I've met in the last 40 odd gaming years.....are gone from gaming. That does include over 10 WHFB and or 40K gamers. At the same time, I still know 8 "lifers" (to wargaming) who started at our/my shop decades ago. that's a good feeling, even when I go down in defeat. :D

I'm 20, and started when i was ten or so with 40K, before moving onto fantasy later. There do seem to be a lot of younger people around in the GW stores that I've been to....but I couldn't guess at their age really. I'm useless at telling how old they are. But a lot of them don't seem to continue the hobby. Most of the people that I used to game with are out of it. Or maybe they just disappear into the warp.
