Hey, I want to enter a painting competition with a Warhammer monster/chariot/big model which I can pickup for, ideally < 20 quid. I can't find ANYTHING which is really inspiring me right now.... :cries:

Anyone got any great ideas please!? :)

What sort of painter are you firstly?

Ah, under 20 is slightly more difficult. Once you hit 30, all the really big monster models become available
(personally i'd suggest Carnosaur - its an awesome model which looks great, the rider can be easily converted if you want, and its pretty easy to paint well)

Under 20...

Personally i quite like the Vargulf model

If you don't like him, the new Chaos Lord on mounts look amazing (both on the Juggernaut and on normal horsey):

I also like the Razordon model. It looks very agressive :D

Finally, if you really want a chariot, i think the High Elf white lion one looks pretty cool. Shave the damm cats tho:

vampires are cool!

What inspires you? What attracted you to fantasy in the first place?

I'm sorry not sure I entirely follow the question

In terms of standard I'm reasonable....

I've painted TK, Eldar, Orks, Space Marines, Chaos Marines, BoC, Orcs and Dark Eldar in the past.

I'm mainly doing this to force myself to knuckle down and improve and possibly inspire myself toward a new Warhammer army too!

Sorry the response was to Shamfrit ! Thinking on the rest

From the armies you've listed I'd suggest a Cold One Chariot conversion with the new cold ones, or a Pump Wagon/Giant. You can get Giants online, the plastic kit, for around 20.

A dragon or a wyvern are the most dramatic imo and give you the best canvas for a great paint job. The marauder (old GW) Wyvern is a particular favourite of mine or the Wood elf dragon, both gettable for less than 15 usually on ebay

If you can find a monster model that has potential, but is not popular, and you can turn that into something spectacular, your skills are far more likely to be noticed.

take a look at this demon:Be'Lakor, The Dark Master

Not expensive but is quite detailed:)

Some great tips here thanks.

I think Be'Lakor is gorgeous but very, very popular though.... I'd consider Galrauch if it wasn't so expensive!

I'd love to do the White Lion Chariot, I think though that while I could manage a good paint jo on the model a truly stellar one would prove out of reach. Large stretched of white frighten me!

I keep umming and aaahing aout the Varghulf, though.

The pump wagon is a nice model, maye..... Also tempting is the gobbo on gigantic spider.

For an unpopular model with possiilities the tomb spider maybe!!?

Any thoughts on those please!? Or any other suggestions gratefully received!

You mean the tomb scorpion? Not much you can do with it is there? The gobbo on gigantic spider is a lovely model, but is a real pain in the ass to put together and transport

Under 20 quid? Howabout one of the old Stone Trolls still some of the lovliest models GW have ever done. Or what about a Maneater. If you want to do a chariot what about the tomb king on chariot. Just a couple of suggestions.

edit: You could always try a Usabti as well. There awesome models as well.

If it's a troll, you could make it look like the CGI movie Beowulf's Grendel.

Except for the Squig which is utter tosh. Its a shame really when all the other squigs are so cool.

Maneater models are great. I am particularly fond of the Pirate and Araby w/ long-sword, personally. That reminds me, I still need to find the Pirate, and the Ninja, models ot add to my collection.

Ushabti are great, too. I'm not sure how much it runs, but I've always liked the Bone Giant. There were some experimental rules a while back that allowed him to take a Bolt-Thrower like bow, which could make for a nice conversion and make it more rare of a model.

MAybe a Dwarvern Lord on Shield Bearers? Not really a monster, but as close as the Dwarves will get :p

gorbad, he's almost monster sized >.<

but id go for a shaggoth conversion for kholek, give him a tyrants hammer turned to look like a meteor, armour him up with the tyrant plate pieces, would look sweet.

but then thats more xpensive.

Thanks for the top tips everyone! I've ended up with a corpse cart - great model with loads of stuff in the box!
