View Full Version : Arnan 317th "Death's Own" - iPaint's IG Log
Progress is being made on the Chimeras and Arna Russ. I have decaled the hulls, and need to scrounge up a few more Baneblade decal sheets to finish the turrets for 221 and 222.
Also, I started work on a custom carrying case using 1/2" and 1" closed cell foam and a large toolbox. I can fit 6 Chimeras per 2.5" of depth and 22"x12" area. I should also be able to fit my infantry in as well, but they have their own cases for now. Eventually I'll get another case to house the Baneblade and the Arna Russes. I should be able to carry 12 Chimeras, 3 Russes, and 1 Hellhound in the case, and with room permitting, maybe some more tank hulls (wink). There's a nice little feature on the case that has 3 small plastic removable boxes, each of which fucntions as it's own carrying case. I've used the 2 larger ones to store all of my turrets, and the smaller one will get some dice and a tape measure.
As nice as it sounds having the infantry in their own little foam holders, I just can't bring myself to cut out 80+ rectangles in all of that foam.
I want to stencil "ARNA 317th" and some Imperial Aquilas on the side to really seal the deal.
All said and done, the whole thing set me back about $80, but considering the alternatives, and the fact that I have more foam than I know what to do with, I should be set.
Pics will be up tomorrow.

wow. Your armoured units look damn impressive when every things deployed.
Can i be a pain and ask what colour you used for the fatigues on your Infantry? Ive had enough of my guys and they are all going in the tub for a paint strip and a repaint.
I am using Apple Barrel Colors Pewter Grey 20580.
I recently pulled all of my tanks out and got some pics. Behold, The Armored Might of The Emperor's Hammer!

Also, inspired by this picture, I may do a squad of Vets with a skull emblem over the front of their helms.

Both of them look good, i'd keep the skull face for stormtroopers, and use the skulls on the helmets for the vets.
Thats an impressive amount of armour too, and looks great.

Very impressive stuff. Keep it up!
Just plowed through your whole blog. Whst can I say except you have put a serious hurt on a lot of models very quickly! I am impressed with the level of quality in your conversions and paint jobs top shelf stuff. All in all a great army! You make me reach for my Guard and pulling me away from my Warmaster is no small feat! Keep up the good work!
Looks really nice but i shall ask to shut others up in advance. That pic is WW1 right?
The picture of those Finns is from World War II. I'm not entirely sure where the picture was taken, or which unit they were with, but my guess would be that it is from 1940 or 1941 when the Finns were engaged with the Soviets.
Here is what I did this morning:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/swimnserve88/Vets_2.jpg

The colors are slightly washed out, a side effect of not having decent lighting and a mediocre camera.
~iPaint
Very nice mate. Very very cool.
I'd steal it but with big red stars instead of skulls.
Keep it up
Wow.
Thats some collection of armour. That and the camo on those vets, just amazing.

Have to say i prefer the helmets with the skull iconography over the camo ones, but thats personal preference :). Your tanks look stunning, particularly the converted Russ's.

Nice idea, the painted skulls on the helmets of your vets are very well done and skull iconography suits perfectly for IG, no surprise there I guess. Much better to use the skull than star etc.

The men in the pic above are from Kevyt Osasto 14 (Light Detachment) of Infantry Division 4. Pic is prolly taken in 1944 (during the Continuation war) just before or during the big Soviet push to break the Finnish lines in the Karelian Isthmus.
Already during the Winter War there was a Finnish unit that used skull (and/or bones) emblem in their helmets, the so called Kuolemankomppania (Death Company) that took part in very hard fighting in the area of Summa near Kuolemanjärvi (Lake of Death).
Okies, enough historical rant ;)
Very nice looking army, hoping to see lots more!

Awesome history reference. Thanks. It's hard to believe the Finns were still holding out until 1944. I know a bit about their involvement on the Eastern Front, but not too much about the Winter War and all of that.
Not much to update on the painting log, sadly. Tomorrow I will have some time to decal and base the remaining Infantry squad members I had started with the batch of 19 I finished last week. I'll probably also start on some more Vets.

Great looking Veterans! The skulls - sculpted or painted onto the helmets - look awesome and are quite close to those of the DKoK Grenadiers.
If you took a page from these awesome "death's head" Finns it is only logical now to include the White Death in your army:

Haha, thanks. Not quite either though, actually. It's just some fancy photoshopping to get an idea of what the overall look would be.
If I can get my hands on some Kasrkin I might try it on them.

Maybe le Soldat Marbo? :) Though "White Death" would stick out too much with my current basing scheme. I'll see what I can do. Bungaroo did some really nice conversion work for some snipers using some non-GW models, and I may have to steal his idea, if not for Marbo, then just because it'd make for a cool model.
On the painting front, I've started work on 13 more Vets, 10 from a squad and the 3 remaining Plasma gunners from one of the CCS's. Go go pea dot camo.

not meaning to hijack your thread, but does anyone know when the Greatcoats are supposed to be released?
Not at all. I hope to one day have them in this thread, so no biggie. WGF has stated the following as of a few days ago:
"We'll have some more info next week on where we are in the production phase."
Also, it appears that this is in fact a real model below:

Lets hope so, they seem like great models (not as good as your guardsmen, though)
I am a mad man for having decided to paint 50 guardsmen in pea dot camo, but I think the end results will be justified. I recently fell across 10 Kasrkin, 2 of which had meltas, so I will eventually get around to converting them with the Kolony heads. Progress is slow, because I've been working on some Ork pieces as a change of pace, but I will have a few more Chimeras done by the end of the month, and hopefully a second Vet squad and the plasma gunners from one of the CCS's done as well.
~iPaint
So, a good 4 days in a bath of Simple Green and the Kasrkin are almost completely cleaned. There was a lot of leftover glue that I couldn't get off, but I was able to get the majority of it off enough so that, when painted, it will look fine.
Next up was cleaning up all the flash and mold lines. Once all of that was finished, it was time to get late-18th century France on these bad boys. Yes, that was a guillotine reference. And yes, that means chopping off metal miniatures' heads.
I found the easiest way off pulling the Cadian heads was to come from the back of their necks with a pair of wire cutters with flat blades. After the majority of the head was off, I used a drill bit to hollow out the crevice so I could place a Pig Iron Kolony head in. A bit of super glue and some green stuff to fill out the neck, and we have the first 5 done out of the 10 man squad I received. Chances are these will be the first 5 I paint since I plan on using them as a deep-strike melta delivery squad.
Here's a pic. I need to scrounge up some bases for them, since the ones they came with were awful.

Actually, the part that took the longest was cleaning up all the leftover paint flakes that wouldn't come off with an old toothbrush. The actual heads took me maybe 20 minutes total for the 5 of them. If you get a decent set of clippers it shouldn't be too hard.
These guys will be sprayed and ready for painting tomorrow when I head to the FLGS for paint night.

Awesome work. I love the Leman Russ conversion Think I'll use it for my IG army (soon to be IG army)
So, been a while since I last updated the thread. I put in my order for some Greatcoats from WGF, so eventually the 317th will see some reinforcements in the form of some "Grenadier" stand-ins. Essentially, they'll be WGF Greatcoats with Pig Iron Kolony heads and GW weps and accessories. I'd like to get a few Leman Russ side tracks to try my hand at the aforementioned Sturmgard Assault Carrier conversion.
Work continues on the painting front, and I'm nearing the completion of my second vet squad and the plasma gunners from one of the command squads.

Loving the work.
Going to use your techniques on my chimeras.
Quick question do you use another coat of gloss varnish over the decals once there set? Otherwise doesnt the oil paints & thinners damage the decals?
Also do you have any issues painting the moving lasguns on the back of the chimeras?
Thanks

Yes, I spray another coat of gloss over the decalled tank to allow the oils to flow freely.
My lasguns are glued down since I didn't want to go through the hassle of painting them just to have the paint scrape off as they move around.
Work has been slow on my IG, if at all, since I'm coming down with a case of Green Fever (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=244651). Yeah.

After everything has been painted, I spray a final coat of gloss over the whole model, then a spray of dull coat.
I then do my pigments, and spray a final coat of dull coat to seal everything.
This log will be seeing some extra attention pretty soon, as I will be getting rid of my Orks to cover some expenses. Sad, but it was becoming difficult to work on 2 armies at once, and I need the funds elsewhere.
Expect some updated pics and close ups later this week.

Paint blotches of yellow-tan (Dunkelgelb is a fitting color description for it).
Add yellow-tan dots to black and grey areas.
Add grey dots to black and yellow-tan areas.
Finish off with black dots over yellow-tan and grey areas.

Battle Honours 25mm, though really they are more like 28mm.
Some of their earlier stuff is true 25mm, and is much smaller than these guys.
~iPaint
Well, here they are. I have a lot more sitting in their boxes, but these were the ones that came loose in the 3box+1sprue deal, for 57 troopers.
They were a bit tall compared to the GW Cadian bodies, so I clipped the bases off and filed them down a bit.
Overall, I am really excited to get these guys going. I have to bits order a bunch more canteen/bayonet/ammo pouch bits, as well as some more arms. The arms may require a bit of greenstuff to fill some gaps, but if you aren't picky about it (I am) the arms fit just fine. The spacing is perfect for the Cadian arms.
I will probably add some folded-back cuffs with greenstuff similar to how the WGF arms are.

Its a pricy kitbash, but i like it. It gives them a very distinctive look. I guess with a good paintjob you can handle the blurry details of the wargames factory sprue pretty well.
Yeah, it is a bit pricey, and takes a few companies' bits, but all said and done I'm still beating GW's prices, which is saying something.
Keep an eye out for a few infantry squads and a command squad in the next few days.

This is one awesome looking army.
Thanks again for the comments everyone.
Here's a quick update.
First up are the Plasma Gunner Vets for one of the Company Command Squads.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/swimnserve88/ccs_1_1.jpg
The guy kneeling has not turned on his gun yet, hence why it is not glowing blue. I wanted my CCS Plasma guys to look like they'd been burned/maimed by the guns. I may come back in and add some blacks and browns onto their skin to show some grime/dirt.
Next up we have some of the Wargames Factory Shock Troopers, modified with GW Cadian arms and Pig Iron Kolony heads. I have added greenstuff sleeve cuffs to better fit in with the greatcoat look. Also, some of the shoulders needed to be filled in on the back side.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/swimnserve88/greatcoats1.jpg
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/swimnserve88/greatcoats2.jpg
And finally, an Arnan infantryman in standard issue Mk III Combat Fatigues and Mk II Combat Armor (left) and an infantryman in the older Mk I Greatcoat and Mk I Combat Armor. Many members of the 317th had not yet received the newer issued fatigues and armor before being deployed.

I will either mix and match the greacoats in with the rest of the infantry squads, or I'll just do 2 platoons of Cadian bodies and 1 platoon of Shock Trooper bodies. Nice thing is WGF is gonna release a heavy weapons sprue for these guys, so maybe we will see some kneeling greatcoats soon.

I like what you've done with the WGF models, I wasn't quite sold on them but now I'm thinking otherwise.
They have turned out very well. I reckon mixing them through might be good, unless it means rebadging all the squad numbers etc.
One thing, how do their feet measure up vs the Cadians ? they look awefully small.
I like what you've done with the WGF models, I wasn't quite sold on them but now I'm thinking otherwise.
Glad it's changed your mind. All things considered, they are rather nice models for their 1st foray into Sci-fi. I'm expecting the next few sprues will be an improvement over this one, since they've received quite a bit of feedback and input for their next sprue, which sounds like it will be a command/heavy weapons sprue.

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning towards, just toss 'em all in there and go for it. All the markings will remain the same to allow for maximum compatibility.
The feet are sort of small, but once you get them based, it is hardly apparent. I'd go as far as saying that the Cadian feet are too big. I have cut down the bases on 2 of the bodies to make them fall in line height-wise with the GW stuff.
Have the rest of the batch of 11 sprayed and ready to start painting. I'll have updates later this week.

CAMO! The man wants camo?! Haha, maybe. :) I'll have to see if a camo pattern will look good on them. I may look at doing reversible greatcoats so that the sleeves would show up as camo for grey coats and grey for camo coats. Similar to how the German smocks were in WW2. These would be for Veterans of course.

Yeah, I'm pleased with how well the two kits fit together. Eventually I may do a Blood Pact or Nurgle-themed traitor guard army using them.

Glad you've come to a decision on the models. I had such high hopes for these guys, and they haven't disappointed so far. My one beef with the kit is the options for bodies. The two advancing ones are great, but the one standing upright is just sorta...blah. But, this is the 1st sprue for these guys, and I'm sure more will be on their way since WGF seems to have hit a homerun with some nice figures for an otherwise untapped market. Maybe in 6th edition guard will get some plastic greatcoats.
I have another 6 PIP greatcoaters in the works, just need some final details then they'll be good for decals/basing.

I'm trying a new technique of leaving the tracks off and painting them separate, then gluing it all on once they're finished. We'll see if it works.
The rear gun assembly is separate, and I have an idea I'd like to try out involving a troop transport compartment with a new Hellhound piece, specifically the piece of armor that spans the width of the tank over the back 4 barrels. Ideally it'd be able to slide in and out just like the Manticore bit. And, if I realy wanted to go to town, I'd try making a Griffon piece to fit in as well.

I got a heck of a shock the other day when I was browsing the "Collected Visions of the Horus Heresy" and found... a Mortian battle tank!!
It (the picture in the book) looks a bit like a Imperial Guard version of a T72, I admit, but still! It makes buying one of the dang things feel just that little bit more legit!
Sorry I don't have a picture of the beastie as I don't own the book, but it was quite the revelation that this thing is - one way or another - effectively canon.

Thanks for all the kind comments everyone.
Painting has been slow, but I did manage to piece together a 2nd Mortian, and plan on having the 3rd finished by this weekend if all goes well. Then they'll both be getting some paint, and all 3 will be magnetized.

I have all 3 of Mort's tanks built, now I just need to get 'em painted, decaled, and weathered. Should be fun.
I'm hoping I haven't lost it, but it appears that I'm one twin-linked laser cannon short for the main turret weapons. This is kinda crappy because the weapon doubles great as a TL Autocannon for the Eradicator variant, and if I'm one short the chances of being able to make another will be slim...hope it's lying around in a box somewhere and I just forgot where I put it.

Oh my dear, I just love the sight of those 3 tanks. They represent the sway of steel perfectly and I can pretty well imagine them coasting across the battlefield.
The effect of the chipped paint looks great again.
Love the Mortians now that they are all painted up, a nice complement to your converted tanks. The color feels a bit "off" compared to your earlier work. Are they painted different or is it just the pics?
It's the lighting, and I took the pics with my phone, so yes, I need to get them out into some natural light, but it needs to be warmer than single digits before I do that :)

And here's the Arnan 3rd Armored Regiment at full fighting strength, without any attached units. The command and support vehicles for any Arnan Armored Regiment will always be assigned to the 1st company in the regiment's TO&E, in this case the 12th Co.
Tanks within a company are numbered by the squadron, then the vehicle. The command tank carries the marking 10.
Note how the 13th Co. is absent, a strong superstition that is held amongst the 3rd AR. Also, the 16th Co.'s 2nd Squadron is blessed with the coveted Executioner variant plasma technology.

Where do they mortian heavy tanks fit in?
Where do they mortian heavy tanks fit in?
I will get a Heavy Battle Tank Company TO&E out sometime, but these tanks are rare in the Arnan companies. Only 15 tanks are currently maintained in the 4th Army, 3 of which are attached to the 3rd Armored Regiment.
The full strength Mortian Heavy Battle Tank company would consist of 7 tanks: 1 command tank and 2 squadrons of 3 tanks. Losses in the field have reduced the 48th Heavy Tank Regiment from 30 tanks at full strength (4 companies of 7, with 2 command tanks) down to half strength.
The Arnan 4th Army consists of elements pooled from several regiments, the majority of which are composed of:
Mechanized Infantry
2nd Co. / 317th Mechanized Infantry Reg.
3rd Co. / 317th Mechanized Infantry Reg.
Infantry
15th Co. / 541st Infantry Reg.
16th Co. / 541st Infantry Reg.
17th Co. / 541st Infantry Reg.

48th Heavy Tank Regiment at full strength.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/swimnserve88/Arnan%20317th/48thHeavyRegt.jpg
26 MkI "Mortian" Heavy Battle Tanks w/ Battle Cannons
3 MkI "Mortian" Heavy Battle Tanks w/ Eradicator TL Autocannons
1 MkI "Mortian" Heavy Battle Tank w/ Executioner Plasma Cannon
The 48th HTR rarely fights at full strength, and as such it lacks the additional Sentinel and Trojan support vehicles commonly found in tank regiments. Instead, squadrons (and companies on rare occasions) are attached to Armored Regiments as needed.
Increased armor protection and an additional crew member allow the MkI "Mortian" to perform more effectively than its cousin, the Leman Russ. However, templates for the Mortian are rare, and few forge worlds are capable of producing the tank en masse. Mortian crews are veterans of many campaigns, as only the best are trusted with such revered machines of war.

Perfect TO&Es as well as Mortian's tanks.
Gone back over all 21 pages of this blog. Magic stuff.
Moving house soon, spare room, space to paint in peace. Time to dig the guard out, chop off all their heads and swap to Pig Iron. Reading your blog again has convinced me.
Inspired by doubleT's DKoK log here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=251322) I am re-basing the army to a more muddy style, with some barb-wire, scrap metals, rocks, and a few clumps of grass (probably Silflor's autumn grass tufts) to break up the grey tones and allow me to muddy up my tanks.
So, while listening to the Drunk Tank (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooster_Teeth_Productions#The_Drunk_Tank_Podcast) for the last few hours, I stripped my bases on all my infantry and will be working on a new basing method over the next few weeks.
Probably spackling mixed with sand, then either oil paints to color it like mud or a pot of gloss to mimic wet mud and sitting water. I may have to re-read doubleT's posts to see how he did it.

Thankfully I pre-ordered the 3 boxes + 1 extra sprue deal from them just before they released the Shock Troopers, and received my order, before this whole snafu happened with management. I know my FLGS still had a few boxes a while ago, but it's been a month or so since I've been in. A few online retailers may still carry them.
And I still have 2 full boxes sitting in my closet waiting for extra arms and pouches, or maybe a side project of some sort. Think it was close to 60 guys in that deal, and I've assembled maybe 20 of em now. Really hope they can continue with that line of minis as I was looking forward to kneeling poses.

Here's an update on the bases. I'm using DAP Patching Plaster, which is a close match to spackling, but it comes in a white paste which makes it a consistent mixture (see the guys on the right).
The process so far:
Step 1 - Apply patching plaster to the entire base with an old brush. Don't worry too much about getting it on the model, as it will be painted over to simulate mud.
Step 2 - Sprinkle sand across various parts of the base, and add a drop of water to allow the larger pieces of sand to sink into the plaster a bit. Let dry for several hours.
Note - at this point, on the rest of the bases, I would add debris, larger rocks, stumps, poles for barbed wire, etc, but since I actually haven't bought/scavenged any of those things yet, these will be my test bases for now.
Step 3 - Basecoat with Folk Art Bark Brown (or any other suitable mid-tone brown). Let dry.
Step 4 - Wash of 3:1 mixture of thinner to Burnt Umber oil paint.
Step 5: Wash recesses with 3:1:1 mixture of thinner, Burnt Umber, and Lamp Black oil paints.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/swimnserve88/Inf_Mudbases.jpg
That's where I am so far. I plan on a quick wet brush of the Bark Brown again, then adding some Silflor autumn tufts here and there, as well as the aforementioned battlefield debris.
I'm undecided on the base edges, whether to do black or Calthan Brown...

On the painting front, I've rebased the 2 Vet squads, the CCS Vets w/ plasma, and 1 of the infantry squads. I'll get some natural light pics up tomorrow.

Update time.
On a wild hair, I added some company markings to my Leman Russes.
Red White Red for 12th Company. Simple to mask off the pattern with masking tape and just used my spray cans. Any sort of over/underspray was simply cleaned up or made to look like weathered paint. Also, mud was added to bring the weathering up to date.

Also, all of my painted infantry have been rebased with the new mud scheme.

Ip,
Looking great. Already a fair size force. A lot of Trooper painting to go I guess.
Lovely looking army. I still kinda liked the old bases but thats just me i guess.
What gun are you going to fit on the Russ hulls ? L/cannon or H/Bolter ?
That's a lot of armor! You have a great looking army there, thanks for the full on pics!

Yeah, the original bases were ok in my opinion, nothing fancy. But I really like the muddy trench warfare look, and I did keep the dead yellow grass, so there's some homage to the older bases.

1500 Pt List ideas being tossed around with the painted models I have, plus 2 scout sentinels I may end up buying soon.
Company Command Squad - 4x Melta, Chimera w/ ML, HF
Platoon Command Squad - 4x Flamer, Chimera w/ ML, HF
Infantry Squad - GL, AC, Chimera w/ ML, HF
Infantry Squad - GL, AC, Chimera w/ ML, HF
Veteran Squad - 3x Melta, Chimera w/ ML, HF
Veteran Squad - 3x Plasma, Chimera w/ ML, HF
Scout Sentinel - AC
Scout Sentinel - AC
Hellhound - HF
Leman Russ Demolisher - HF
Leman Russ MBT - HF
Manticore - HF
8 AV12 hulls, 2 AV14 Hulls, and 50 Infantry in 1500 pts.
Push forward with the Vets/PCS/CCS and Demolisher/Hellhound, Sentinels outflank for side shots or use scout to get into good cover, and the rest of the army hangs back to provide supporting fire and protect objectives.
Thoughts?
More pics. Think my focus was a bit off, not a lot of depth, but meh, good enough for government work.

Great to see the vast amount of new troops iP. The different camo, bodies and fatigues etc are a great touch. I am quite impressed with the weathering on the tanks as usual, keep it up =)
To be honest I liked your previous bases more than the new ones - just because of the fact that the camouflage of the troops and the bases were colour-coordinated.

Fantastic work - all your models really look like they've just come straight from the warzone onto the table. I think your tanks look even better than (or at least just as good as) the IA books and I'm a big fan of your work.
Great looking army, nice to see all that armour lined up.
Quick Q about the Mortian tank, is it possible to make the model with the drivers hatch open? I'm thinking about getting one and I have two nice tank crew minis to use.

Yeah, it really helps break up the monotony of the Cadian bodies.

Yeah, I did too, but I think these bases have a bit more going for them. I may add the yellow grass back in and clump it a bit better than I did before.

Yes, both driver and turret hatch covers come loose, so you can model both closed, both opened, or one closed and the other open. Whatever fits your fancy. I was tempted to show a driver peeking out, but figured he'd stay buttoned up in combat. Maybe as a display piece it would work better.
I'll get some pics up later this weekend of the work I'll get done tonight. On the paint table is some infantry and some more markings on the Chimeras and re-decaling.

IA:MM is a really fantastic book, but it looks like it won't be able to teach you much that you don't already know.
Been a while, but I was able to escape the Dark City (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=282201) for just a while. I ordered some 1/16" x 1/32" magnets with which to magnetize my Sentinels and Wyches, so be on the lookout for them when the magnets get in.
IA:MM is a really fantastic book, but it looks like it won't be able to teach you much that you don't already know.
I'd really like to learn some airbrush techniques and more pigment techniques, as my grasp on those are limited by my lack of the former, and sporadic use of the latter.
I may break down soon here and buy a few Valks. I'm looking at these (http://www.pig-iron-productions.com/hd17-system-trooper-alternative-heads-p-54.html?zenid=a0bd0576999c6d3ea7ada77c8a0ab705)hea ds to replace the GW ones that come in the kit. They look much more high tech than the current pilot heads. Plus, I'd love to do instrument panel reflections and source lighting reflecting on the visors :).
I'd also really like to do a Renegade force some time in the future, maybe just a 1000pt army or something. Go to town on the weathering and converting. There's some cool Blood Pact heads available from a few different companies.
In the meantime, keep an eye out for Sentinels.

Wow! That is one really fantastic army, the Pig Iron helmets really set them apart from other guardsmen, and those tanks are just... EPIC.
Consider your idea of Pig Iron helmets stolen for my stormtroopers. :p
Magnetized Sentinel PiP update. Pigments will be used to clean up the exhausts, since this is just a base coat for them. I'm really happy with the optics on the armored cockpit.

Happy anniversary, iPaint - the Arnan look incredible, and I love your mod-russes.
Took some time off today from painting Dark Eldar to redo some decals and markings on 3 of my Chimeras, assemble some more infantry, and base my Sentinel. Pics off my iPhone, so bear with me.
2 Platoons' worth of infantry, less the heavy weapons teams. I'm going to hold off and see how the Wargames Factory Greatcoat heavy wep teams turn out and base my purchases towards that.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/swimnserve88/Arnan%20317th/2_Platoons_01.jpg
Need to finish some details on these guys.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a105/swimnserve88/Arnan%20317th/Chimeras_Updated_02.jpg
1st Platoon, 1st Tank, "472" designates the motor pool this vehicle belongs to for resupplying. Red White Red stripes for 1st Platoon. Red Background for vehicle markings denotes 2nd Company.
Red White Red - 1st Platoon
Red Yellow Red - 2nd Platoon
Red Black Red - 3rd Platoon
White Red White - 4th Platoon
Yellow Red Yellow - 5th Platoon
Company Colors would be as follows, replacing Red in the above formula:
Blue - 1st Company
Red - 2nd Company
Green - 3rd Company
Dark Grey - 4th Company
I really like the Chimeras' markings now, much more so than before. Plus, I can now have them numbered higher than "3" since I am using different decals. And a "C" for the command vehicle, which will be the newer model Chimeras. Plan is to have 2 full platoons of models according to the TO&E posted earlier on page 21.
In the mail, I have some new Pig Iron System Trooper alternate heads, and the 1st Valk should be coming soon as well. Pilot heads, hehehe....
~iPaint
Love the 'used & abused' feel to your guard.
Great painting.
Sentinel is almost finished, just have to toss some static grass on and magnetize the weapons with larger magnets than what I currently have. Looking at it again, I need to knock back the yellow lenses on the front, and add some darker weathering under the weapon housing area. Then it should be good to go, barring any extra decals I may add later.

great work dude!

The Valkyrie came in today and I started assembling it. I decided against painting the interior since I have too much going on and I want to get some paint on it asap. I'm thinking about a dark brown base with mottled yellow/tan spots, to blend in with my bases as they would be seen from overhead. trying to figure out the best way to do it without having access to an airbrush.
I'll have some pics up later, as well as a sneak peek at some future plans.

I'll be working on some 541st Infantry Regiment guardsmen soon. The tunic and helmet cover are simply Khemri Brown, Devlan Mud, then Khemri Brown again. Really easy, and the armor and pants help tie the unit into the Arnan uniform style and theater of war.
I need to figure out an emblem or something for the right shoulder guard, since I want there to be a difference between the Mechanized infantry and the Foot sloggers.

Use the right shoulder pad for company/platoon/squad markings:
91C would be 9th Company 1st Platoon Command or what have you. :)
Use the right shoulder pad for company/platoon/squad markings:
91C would be 9th Company 1st Platoon Command or what have you. :)
I'll have to think about that. Though, part of me wants to keep them universal, so I can just pick guys out of the box and not worry about unit designations....tricky tricky....
I may bust out my custom decal maker kit and see what I can do, since I will most definitely not be freehanding 50+ shoulder pads, since the plan is to do a full platoon.
On the painting front, I tried some paint on my Valkyrie, and let me just say, if you don't have a game plan, be prepared to be unimpressed with end results. At first, I thought about brown with tan spots, sort of a reverse Messerschmidt scheme, then decided tan with green spots, then bagged it all and decided I will follow Mike's scheme (http://santacruzwarhammer.blogspot.com/2009/11/bishkek-2nd-valkyrie-part-2-camo.html) from Santa Cruz Warhammer. I like it a lot, and it seems he got desirable results with "minimal" effort.
So, I went out today and bought some spray paints and some painter's tape, and will work on masking and spraying the Valk this weekend if all goes to plan. The whole kit has been soaking in Super Clean and will be stripped and re-primed, ready for round 2. A minor setback, but a learning experience nonetheless. And I want this model to look good, so I'm willing to put in the time.
Here's his scheme for those too lazy to look. He did an excellent job on the wing details. I will most likely go for a yellow nose and yellow stripes on the tail boons, without the wing details.

My own guard are using a three-colour-band marking scheme to differentiate units, three vertical bands on the shoulder:
1st - Formation - 1st Platoon, 1st Command, etc.
2nd - Unit Type - Infantry, Flak, Command, AT, etc.
3rd - Unit Designation - 1st Squad, 2nd Squad, etc.
Of course, in the case of Company Command, they're just Red/Gold to designate First HQ, while Platoon Command is Red/Silver for First Platoon HQ. 1st Platoon, 1st Infantry is Red/Green/Red, while 2nd Infantry is Red/Green/White.
I figured it was far more simple than trying to put numbers and stuff on.
2 or so hours of taping, plus a couple days' worth of spraying, and here is the 1st WIP pic of the new Valk. I need to spray the nose yellow, hence the gray/white mix there. Overall I'm pleased with how it came out, much better than before.
There was some bleeding and underspray from where the tape pulled up a bit, but that should all be washed out once weathered. Shiny pics because of a gloss coat to protect everything from a new layer of tape for the nose.

Cheers, it came out better than I expected actually, though the brown is a little heavy in some places and left a raised edge where the tape came off, but it should disappear under weathering. I will also do the yellow first the next time round, since I had some overspray that crept under the tape. But again, I can fix it during weathering.

Thanks, check out page 7 for a tutorial featuring a Hellhound.
Got some stuff coming in from eBay in the next week, all of which came assembled in a manner that looked good AND had Pig Iron heads:
6 Autocannon teams
6 Flamers
3 Sergeants
2 Vox Operators
1 Officer
25 Lasgunners ( a few of these guys came as Penal Legion without the Kolony heads, but I have extra heads to replace them).
As well as 30 Canteen/Bayonet/Ammo pack accessories for any of them if they are missing. If they aren't they'll be good for greatcoat models. I also have 9 more unassembled Cadian troopers sitting around, and 30+ more greatcoats, so whatever I need in terms of armaments I can manage.
This whole lot will be the start of a platoon from the 541st Infantry Regiment, so when I decide to do blob squads w/o Chimera support, I can use these guys.
Also tried to snag some older style Chimeras, but my eBay foo was not up to par. I may have to cave in and buy the new kit for the last 4 tanks I need to complete my 2 platoons for the 317th. Newer model tanks would be used to replace knocked out vehicles anyway.
On the painting front, I did some work on some Incubi over in my Dark Eldar log, but had some time to get the Valkyrie up to this stage. Still waiting on the heads to ship from Rattlehead, but I'm not in a rush.

Scrapes were done with Charadon Granite applied to a small, thin strip of blister foam, which I then applied in long strokes across the model from front to back, horizontally, using tweezers. Typically, aircraft of the modern day wouldn't see this kind of wear and tear, but then we are 38,000 years in the future, and everything there is bass ackwards. Plus, it looks cool, which is what I want :).
You may have noticed that the rear landing strut is missing: something the GW assembly guide fails to point out is that the flying stand support piece (which was too small to house the flight stand clear plastic and resulted in my filing it down a ton so it would fit) is supposed to attach in a way that allows the back landing gear piece to be glued down unopposed. A lesson learned for the next Valkyrie I do.
Oil paints will be applied soon, and I will be light on the rust portion of the washes (except for the engines, those babies are getting worked!), going mostly for streaks of brown and black. I've also looked at doing "paint fading" using tans and white oil paints applied directly to the model from the tube, then faded using a brush loaded with spirits. But that may be some time before I try that.

I'm sorry iPaint, I don't like that yellow, its bit too bright. I know you haven't added oils yet, but I recommend to put lots of oils to those yellow parts :D But that's my opinion. Maybe something...dark yellow would be nice color instead of that bright.
But, Thank you for the tutorial :) I might send few pics of the model where I used that chipping technique :) Keep it up iPaint.

I love the yellow. Very Eastern Front. more please!
Couple layers of oils and here we are. Mostly browns/reds. Black will be next.

Haha, oh ye of little faith :).
I knew this color would be ok since I'd tested it earlier on my Chimeras, and the oils really knock some of the color back. Plus, it needs a dull coat once it's all said and done, which will take away the shine.
I just ordered a black aluminum carry case from KR Multicase that should be able to hold my entire 317th army once it's done. So that's a sum total of 113 infantry, 8 heavy weapons teams, 2 Sentinels, 14 Chimera hulls, 3 Leman Russ hulls, and a Valkyrie. Plus enough room for 8 more Chimera hulls and 7 more infantry. Plus, the great thing about the cases is they're interchangeable, in case I decide I'm not totally finished (and Guard armies never are!).
Boom! Army shot!

Nice army shot! I've enjoyed watching your army evolve over the years, much quicker than mine I must say!

Definitely impressive - do you prefer painting vehicles to infantry by any chance? ;)
Got my reinforcements in for the 541st. Need to clean up some mould lines and replace some heads, as well as glue some loose arms back on and add the grenades/canteens/bayonet pieces.
All said and done I should have enough for 5 squads plus a few heavy weapons. Still waiting for Wargames Factory to reveal their heavy weapons teams to see if that will be on my purchase list.

Amazing army shot.
Pig Iron heads arrived, as did my KR Multicase.
Had a chance to do some OSL on the cockpit, think it's almost there, just a few more extreme highlights and the panel work to do.

The weathering is stunning. The OSL makes them look like they're flying at night - which is ace! any chance of a tutorial?

Pretty easy, Knarloc Green basecoat followed by successive highlights towards the front of the figure by adding Scorpion Green, then a wash of Thraka Green over the whole thing. I'll come back in with some pure Scorpion Green and do the details and extreme highlights eventually.

Ooo brill. Thanks. I'll have to remember that when I come to do my night attack Valkyries.
Here's my entry for September's installment of the Tale of 40K Painters for 2011-2012.
Finish 3 Chimeras and 1 Hellhound (details, weapons, etc, as well as stowage) and paint 2 Infantry Squads for the 541st.

Hello
Those Morts you bought from Heavy-Support were they easy to put together?
Might invest in one or two for my IG army.
Cheers

Lovely Chimeras... but what on earth is the obsession with the hull heavy flamer over the heavy bolter? I just don't get it.

The couple games I have played when I took heavy bolters, I couldn't get any of them to hit. Maybe it's bad luck. It's ok though because I'm gonna end up magnetizing them in the future for easy swapping.

They weren't overly difficult to put together, just a bit time consuming. The tracks need to be cut, cleaned, and fitted for improper alignment each time, but knowing the right assembly for them was easy since I followed Sheep's guide over on his paint log. You will need a strong super glue, clippers, files, and some green stuff, as well as a set of C-clamps to hold the hull together as it dries.
Time consuming in the prep, but well worth it imo.

Thanks mate.
I added some squadron stripes to the Hellhound, blue white blue, and added the stripes to the Leman Russes on the side that was missing them. Also, got the majority of the detail work done on the Chimeras posted above. Pics to follow soon.

Hey iPaint,
I messaged you 8 months ago, you probably don't remember.
Well you told me to show you anything I came up with and here it is. (Finally have time to start 40k again.)

Hope I haven't intruded in your thread.
Thanks for the awesomes.
Oh ho ho, too cool! Really looking forward to seeing completed pics. The Bassie looks very German SPA, almost like an Elefant.
Speaking of self-propelled artillery, if you haven't been keeping up on Tinners' work with plasticard, I highly recommend you check out his log. I am fortunate enough to have three of his masterpieces coming to the States to bolster the ranks of my IG.

Thanks for your kind words! I just checked out Tinners' blog and I am blown away. What did you get him to build you?
In regards to painting, I'm too scared of ruining the model to paint it right now. I don't know if I should be using an airbrush or what colours to use. Got any advice?

He was actually selling off a bunch of his work, and I picked up his Basilisk/Medusa combo tanks. As far as painting goes, research ideas and do some google searches to see what others have done. Spray paints from Tamiya will work ok for basecoating, and painters tape will help you with any masking you need to do. Then it's just how much or little you want to weather and detail it.
~iPaint
So you're the one who got those, huh? Beat me to it man. I picked up his Panzer Russes. The army looks fantastic man.
A package arrived yesterday...the contents of which are in the process of being repainted after traveling through the Warp, ready for a new warzone.
Here's a sneak peek. More to follow.

Medusas? :D
Sweet, where'd you get those?
Some bloke across the pond :)
And for now they'll be Bassies, I need to make some larger-bore barrels to swap when I want to run them as Medusas.
