The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2009-2010

Gentlemen ... start your engines.

So here it is the official start thread for the 3rd Tale of Fantasy Painters.
Thanks to everyone who has signed up for this madness.
If you have not signed up yet and would like to join us you are not to late.
Just post on this thread which army and how many points you intend to paint and then crack on.

So on this thread you can tell us all about your plans, post your intended list, your 'painting plan' for the 12 months, (LOL like your going to stick to that! :D), your test minis, and any work in progress (WIP) for the first months work.

Please don't post completed work on this thread. Save that for the next thread. (which will appear on the last day of August/first day of September).

Please do post comment on others ideas and work, ask questions, offer advice, support and most importantly do give each other some stick and have fun.

I wish each and everyone of you the best of luck with your projects. My advice is start fast (whilst you have lots of enthusiasm) as soon as you finish one months work, crack on with the next. Don't panic if you miss an end of the month deadline ... keep going and just post later in the month ... it will still count as that months painting then crack on and see if you can't still get the next months painting done and get back on track. Don't panic if you use up your jokers. Lots of us did last year. But busy lives calm down again, enthusiasm returns, time presents itself again. When it does 'push hard and 'buy back' your jokers by painting extra. When your struggling post and say so. (don't just slip quietly away) You will be amazed by the posts of encouragement and support which come from your fellow painters eager to see you successfully complete this project. Most importantly ... 'Stick with it' ... The prize of getting your stuff painted remains worth all the effort.

All the best,
Harry

What is it all about?

Do you want to paint a 2000 point army in the next 12 months?
Have you got what it takes?
Do you want to meet a great bunch, with the same goal who will encourage and support you throughout the process?
Can you do the same in return?
Are you completely bonkers?
Then you have come to the right place! :D

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2009 and finishing with their last post on the last day of July 2010.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys (and Infants!)

Because this is harder than you would think this year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month we have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 2000 points/month) and 'Boys' painting 1000 points/month).
I have also added a list for the 'Infants' or Warmaster painters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.
.....TRY AND MAKE IT CLEAR YOU ARE SIGNING IN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR POST SO I DON'T MISS IT!

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. Write much as you like. We love background. write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

So as an example of the sort of information you might want to post ... here are my plans for the 1000 points of Skaven I intend to get painted:

The Background/Theme:

I have no special theme or background for this army. (Just lots of minis to paint)
There will not be lots of conversions. Mostly these will be straight out of the box.
The one thing all these minis have in common is that they are all metal and they are all Colin Dixon sculpts form 'Marauder miniatures'.
(except for the Characters that are each Jes Goodwin classics).

The List:

Characters:
Warlord (99)
Plague Priest (70)
Assassin (105)

Core:
20 Storm vermin Inc: Std, Mus, Boss (205)
+ Warpfire thrower team (75)

Special:
7 Gutter Runners. (105) + Black Skaven (12)
20 Plaguemonks Inc: Command (185)

Rare:
8 Plague censer bearers (17) (136)

Total Points: 1008

The Plan:
Heres is my Painting plan. I want to paint my Warlord as a test mini to work out how to paint these guys. (I have never painted Skaven before). After that I have tried to mix up painting characters/weapon teams with getting blocks of troops done to give my self small 'rewards' for finishing the units. No chance I am going to stick to this but it is good to have a plan. To fail to plan is to plan to fail. :D

Month 1 Warlord (99)
Month 2 Storm Vermin Inc Cmd (115) [214]
Month 3 Strom Vermin (90) [304]
Month 4 Warpfire Thrower team (75) [379]
Month 5 10 Plague Monks Inc Cmd (105) [484]
Month 6 10 Plague monks (80) [564]
Month 7 8 Plague Censer bearers (136) [700]
Month 8 Plague priest (86) [786]
Month 9 7 Gutter runners + 1 Black Skaven (117) [903]
Month 10 1 Assassin (105) [1008]

The Test Mini:
Not done one yet.

I don't have the new WoC book, so I've just created a list of about 2k's worth of stuff based on the old HoC book and the models I already have. I've not included unit upgrades or characters' magic items in the list below.

I've not really got a theme; just generic chaos. However, all the bases will be woodland themed, so that'll hopefully give the army a bit more visual impact.

Characters
Lord (w/mount)
Exalted champion
Sorceror
Sorceror
Units
20 marauders
12 warriors
12 warriors
6 hounds
6 hounds
5 knights
5 marauder horsemen

Painting plan:
1. 12 warriors
2. 12 warriors
3. Both sorcerors
4. 10 marauders
5. 10 marauders
6. Exalted champion
7. 5 knights
8. 12 hounds
9. 5 marauder horsemen
10. Lord

This isn't actually 200pts/month, but it gets the whole army done over the 10 months and gives a fairly even distribution of painting. As the point of this "tale" is to motivate us to get an army done, I thought it was better doing it this way then dreading the month when I have to paint 20 marauders and a bunch more stuff.

Test model
Coming soon

Perfectly acceptable way of going about it. As you say it is about getting your stuff painted not sticking strictly to 200 points a month.
Far better you stick with it than chuck it in after month 4 because you cant face that block of 20 Marauders.

Don't know if this helps or not not knowing all your weapons and magic item options:

Painting plan:
1. 12 warriors with Shileds Inc: Std, Mus and Champ (222)
2. 12 warriors (as above) (222) [444]
3. Both Sorcerors with nothing (85 x2) [614]
4. 10 marauders with L. armour/shileds Inc: Std , mus, and champ (80) [694]
5. 10 marauders with L. armour/shileds (60) [754]
6. Exalted champion (with nothing) (110) [864]
7. 5 knights Inc: Std, Mus, and Champ. (250) [1114]
8. 12 hounds (72) [1186]
9. 5 marauder horsemen light armour/shileds (105) [1271]
10. Lord (with nothing) (210) [1511]

I love this idea.

So, here's my plan for the next twelve months:

Zorgoth Deathclaw and his Waaagh! - the Albion Aleboyz

Theme: Forests! Tartans! Schiltrons! Infantry! Beer!

Roll call:

Black orc warboss on wyvern (might use Azhag the Slaughterer model when/if it comes out)
Black orc battle standard bearer on foot
Black orc big boss on boar
Orc shaman on foot
Night goblin great Shaman on foot

25 boyz
25 boyz
20 savage boyz on foot
20 black orcs
35 night goblins

5 wolf riders
5 wolf riders
5 boar boyz

3 River trolls
Giant

The above is not ordered in any way, I have no idea for the life of me what I will paint first or second.

Also, is it OK to post work from my dark elf army (which is very nearly finished) as entries in this event?

Sign me up Harry =>

I need some help getting an army painted and would love to join in. 2000 points of High Elves should be a pretty sight.

Right you lot, I'm off to the bank. Good luck.

P.s WhileI’m posting I might as well give a (very) basic production plan;
White Lion Chariot.

What's not to like about tartans and beer? :D

Not so much on the Dark Elf stuff. You mean can you post two months of DE and then start on your Orcs? It will confuse the hell out of us. :D

I was just thinking, it's about time to get cracking on this...

I tried to paint Lizardmen for the Tale of Fantasy Painters last year, but lost interest/ran out of time after a couple of months and concentrated on the 40K side. I'm back again though, and raring to go! Or should that be, roaring to go? For I shall be painting an army composed entirely (or mostly) of Dinosaurs.

Since I made a start last year, some of the 2000 points I had planned is already partially or fully finished. I was short of time at the start of the tale so I painted a Stegadon with Skink Chief and a Carnosaur. This leaves me with the following minis "in the works":

Oldblood to ride the Carnosaur
5 converted Cold One Riders (metal riders, brand new DE cold ones)
2 Salamanders (half painted)
3-4 Terradons (need stripping and repainting)

That should keep me busy until Christmas, after then I may have to start buying some stuff. I'll eventually have a further 9 Cold One Riders, plus a Scar Veteran on a Cold One carrying the BSB. I also have plenty of Skinks (needed to fill the core choices up), Temple Guard, a second Slann, a couple of Warchiefs/Priests so I'll probably paint some odd things out of that lot.

The only other definite purchase I'll make is a couple of Razordons to complete my Lizardmen monster collection. ;)

There are plenty of pictures of previous models in my photo gallery or project log (links in my signature).

Now I have to go sort out the 40K Tale thread, TTFN!

Nah, goooo ...on. Post up the dino's you have done as 'Test mini's' just to remind us of where you were heading with these guys.
I have fond memories of a charging stegadon. :D

I've just checked out your log, Harry. I'm amazed at how quickly you churn out really nice looking armies. I'm looking forward to seeing some WIPs in this thread. I'll have some myself soon... just as soon as I've produced some and found my camera!

Well the list I intend on using for my Ogre Kingdoms currently looks like:

Tyrant with Equipment (301)
Butcher with equipment (180)
Butcher with equipment (180)
5 Bulls with command and ironfists (250)
5 Bulls with command and ironfists (250)
4 Ironguts with command (267)
25 Gnoblars with Groinbiter (52)
25 Gnoblars with Groinbiter (52)
8 Gnoblar Trappers (46)
2 Leadbelchers (110)
2 Leadbelchers (110)
Gorger (75)
Gorger (75)

And its 52pts shy of 2000pts.

But I'm in the boys league so I only have to do half of that :p. But I cannot see myself needing two months for a Butcher or three months for the Tyrant so I should end up closer to 2000pts then 1000pts (especially since I dont have much of an excuse to not paint each of the 12 months in the Boys league)

So my current plan looks something like:
Month 1: 2 Ogre Bulls (including banner)
Month 2: 3 Ogre Bulls
Month 3: 2 Leadbelchers
Month 4: 2 Leadbelchers
Month 5: Butcher
Month 6: 2 Ogre Bulls (including banner)
Month 7: 3 Ogre Bulls
Month 8: Butcher
Month 9: 2 Ironguts
Month 10: 2 Ironguts
Month 11: Tyrant
Month 12: 2 Gorgers

Which actually gets me to 1800pts. Maybe if I can get my act into gear over one of my holidays and get the 58 gnoblars + 52pts spare painted up in extra time I'll get to 2000pts anyway :p. Sure

Apart from the two butchers, I have no background devised yet. Butcher A is along the lines of "This is my BOOMSTICK!" and Butcher B is inspired by a song lyric (more on that when I get to him I think).

As for the colour scheme, I'm going to go with a more human colour skin then the grey scheme GW has gone for, suitably rusty weapons and clothing made from random fabrics sewn together.

And to throw a curve ball at all of the TOFP veterans, I wont be doing snow bases . Over the shock? Good :p.

It seems we have a celebrity amongst our midst this year too. The Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has jumped on our bandwagon. Welcome aboard Wise Guy Sam ;)

I'm signed up for 1000 points of Lizardmen, and here is the plan.

Theme: No special theme planned. And I haven't made an army list... the list below just lists the stuff I have bought. Probably won't paint all of it, as it's a lot more than 1000 points.

List:
Skink chief
Skink Priest
48 Skinks
32 Saurus
8 CoR
Salamander hunting pack
2 Stegadon

Painting plan:
Month 1 - Skinks
Month 2 - Skinks
Month 3 - Skinks
Month 4 - Salamander
Month 5 - Saurus
Month 6 - Saurus
Month 7 - Saurus
Month 8 - Saurus
Month 9 - CoR
Month 10 - CoR

That's the basic idea. But who knows... maybe I'll feel like painting one of the Stegadon at some point. I'll experiment with skink schemes today or tomorrow, tho I have a good idea of how to paint them already.

I will be painting 2000 points of Skaven for the tale.

I have no real theme, but I will probably try to stay away from making the army too strongly influenced by any of the major clans, and rather try to go for "warlord clan with add-ons" approach. So no SAD sillyness or anything like that ;)

I will not put up any final list with points values and so on since the new book is coming in the near future. But I have a rough plan for the first 3 months before the book arrives:

Month 1: 25 clan rats, full command + ratling gun (210:ish iirc)
Month 2: 20 plague monks, 2 hand weapons, command, baner of burning hatred
Month 3: Either 25 clanrats + warpfire thrower or 6 censer bearers + giant rats to fill out points

I must admit I have taken the oppurtunity to jumpstart my first regiment of clanrats a little during July since I had some time off during my vacation. Should be able to post up some pictures of a test model relatively soon :)

Harry
31-07-2009, 12:20
Jump starting is compulsory for everyone painting 2000 points of Skaven. :D

Butcher B is inspired by a song lyric (more on that when I get to him I think).
"Every time you go away ... you take a piece of meat with you?" Paul Young? :D

No?

Looks like you have talked yourself into 2000 points there Bucko. :D

So, I was planning to get 2000pts of deserty Lizardmen done.
It would be something along the lines of..

Oldblood on Carnosaur (got plenty of bits for a nice conversion.. still need to get the bloke and his beast though!)
2 Skink priests

2 blocks of 15 Saurus with spears
2 groups of 10 Skink skirmishers

5 Cold one cavalry
3 Kroxigors
3 Terradons
Stegadon

2 Salamanders

I got some book recently about Aztec weaponry and other military stuff, so I may just get some nice ideas for conversions..

As for the colours.. The lizardmen are yellowish like Leopard Gecko's. Here an old mini painted that way:

As long as I'm not officially in the Men's League I haven't :p. I don't want to have to paint 4 Bulls in a month!

And I was thinking more of "Speaking by the name of Seti. The effigy speaks through a mask made of human skin" from Bloodbath's "Blood Vortex" as opposed to Paul Young :p. Replace 'Seti' with 'The Maw' and my Butcher is now the Effigy of the Maw (though it is more of a case of I think a mask made of human skin would look pretty cool on a Butcher :p).

EDIT: Very nice scheme C-Coen. A desert scheme is one I havent seen (or cant remember having seen) before. And congratulations on being the first to post WIP shots. McMullet saying 'go to my plog' doesn't count :p

Mmmm desert Lizardmen sound very cool. Don't think I have seen an army not all jungled up. Looking forward to those already.

I got some book recently about Aztec weaponry and other military stuff, so I may just get some nice ideas for conversions..

As for the colours.. The lizardmen are yellowish like Leopard Gecko's. Here an old mini painted that way:

Sounds like a brilliant theme for Lizardmen and fairly original as has already been said!

Ok, so here's my plan.

The Background/Theme:

The Devotees of Elazar is a WoC army. They worship the Daemon Prince Elazar The Glorified (I named him and then stole the name for my screen name, just in case people think I'm displaying that Slaaneshi vanity a little too much! ;)) as a proxy for Slaanesh. The whole army has the Mark of Slaanesh. Although they worship Slaanesh more for the Pride, Vanity and Ambition aspects of his nature although that doesn't stop the debauchery and pleasure seeking.
As for painting I decided to go for a bone coloured armour when I started the army and that's how I'm going to carry on! The colour pallette is limited mostly to Bone and Gold colours with the odd splash of purple here and there but I've tried to avoid the standard Slaaneshi pinks and purples as much as possible
Here's a few example pics of the colour scheme:

Well, I don't have a plan as such, seeing as I'm just rolling on with the current DE army that I haven't yet finished.
I can tell you what will be included in this years efforts though, in no particular order:
Morathi on dark pegasus
Hero on manticore
10 new corsairs
5 new Cold one knights
Malus Darkblade
15 Executioners
New Sorceress on cold one
And any new stuff that is released during the coarse of the year, as well as any extra troops I think need adding to existing units.

So by the time this years Tale is half way through I should have comlpeted about 6k of DE's in 18 months. All going well I might be able to paint something that isnt a Dark elf as well =)

And so it all beginns!
Well, for me this is a new experience, I've never managed to paint a whole army before, but this time, this time...

It's 2,000 pts of Wissenlanders for me. Drums, trumpets and banners is teh *****! At least funny to paint, although the value of e.g. a banner in a handgun unit is debatable from a gaming perspective...
The theme (except for grey), is something along the lines of a force being assembled to root out some evil power growing in the mountain range south of the former province of Solland. The holy church of Sigmar has decided to respond in force, and has sent out a call for local nobles and militia to gather under the command of a high ranking warrior priest (arch lector rules-wise).
The list will be something like this:

Arch lector on foot
Batlle standard bearer
Lvl 2 Battle Wizard
25 swordsmen, FC
9 Halberdiers, 5 handgunners (detatchments)
12 Handgunners, FC
2*5 Crossbowmen (det.)
25 Flagellants, prophet of doooooooom
5 Knights, musician, preceptor (and probably a banner)
18 Greatswords, FC
9 Halberdiers, 6 Archers (det.)
5 Pistoliers, Musician, Outrider
2 Great Cannons

Should be more or less 2,000 pts.

The Plan:
I'm starting out with the characters, to give me time to build and convert as much as possible of the army in the early months, then concentrate on the painting.

Something like this maybe:

1: Arch Lector
2: BSB, Halberdier detachment
3: Swordsmen
4: Knight + Handgunners + Hangunner detachment
5: 2 Cannons
6: Knight + 2*Crossbowmen + Halberdier detachment
7: Battle Wizard, Archers
8: Flagellants
9: Greatswords
10: Pistoliers + remaining knights

Paint scheme: Codex grey + Dheneb stone, with silver, black and brown accessories, and red shields/plumes. No test model painted yet.

Is it allowed to tie together each months post with a short narrative (5-10 lines)? Or should that be put elswhere?

This is the first time I have taken part in anything like this. Im only just returning to the hobby and due to poor packing careless clear outs and other unfortunate things I was left without a working army for either Fantasy or 40k.

Cue a new army.....or 2....maybe 3.

For this adventure, I have chosen to Build a 2000 point Wood Elf army and begin an Empire army of 1000 points. I have never played either of these armies before.

I like the look of both though which is my only consideration for starting an army.

Woodies:

I have no list in mind.I will paint enough of each to make a legal army and then use stuff I like the look of,regardless of how they stack up viability or effectiveness.

Background is virtually non existant, Theyre Woodelves, they live quiet lives in the forrest .Occasionally someone will attempt to clear some trees for whatever reason and this force will emerge to persuade them that would be a bad idea.Basicly a border patrol.

The colour scheme will be dark, grim even. One that would blend in very well in a thick forrest. No bright colours all greyed out dark leather and blackgreen.
Test figures:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Deusmex/wood%20elves/DSCF2610light-1.jpg

This month will see me painting 5 Way watchers and a lvl 2 Spellsinger.

Empire.

Im doing an Ostermark force made up of Farmers hunters ruffians retired vets and regulars , all brought together to stop an invading Orc horde. The demise of Mordheim has devastated an already bleak province and they are now convinced they are cursed with bad luck. Rather than wallow in self pity they have gotten god damn pissed off and are prepared to bloody anyones nose who comes along. Sadly for the Orcs they will bare the brunt of this anger.

Ostermark has always been portrayed as a rural province with little wealth, so my army wont be fielding any Black powder weapons or shiny toys like cannon or tanks. It will be infantry heavy with hunters and crossbow men supplying the fire power and Swordsmen spearmen and halbediers supplying the bulk. When I hit my limit I will then think about Knights etc, but for this project its all PBI.

The colour scheme for Ostermark is Purple and Yellow/White.

In the first month I will be painting a lot of Free Company mainly to try out some colour combinations and styles for later use on regular troops.
Test models to see the purple yellow thing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/Deusmex/Blood%20Ravens/Empire/DSCF2619light-1.jpg

I wish everyone the best of luck and I cant wait to see everyones stuff. This could be a monster . :)

Nice elves Deusmex! I like the muted colours, very fitting for a stealthy force apt at hiding in the woods.

Sweet! We are even a day ahead over here (yeah, I woke up early.....)!

Alright, I am pretty secure with how the NGs are shaping up, but I am not too certain about the other two lists that I will be doing.

Night Goblins of the Bloody Moon Tribe, followers of the Great Waaagh! of the White Orcs

The List:
Skarsnik and Gobbla (the older ones)
NG Boss on Giant Squig
2x Shamans (lvl 2...that's right, I will be doing magic items this time around :p).

Core:
40 NG with Spears/sh/nets
40 NG with Spears/sh/nets
34 NG with Spears/sh (Skarsnik goes here)
30 NG with HW/sh/nets
30 NG with HW/sh/nets (might remove the nets from one or both of these)

Special:
10 Squig Hoppers
7 Squig Hunter Teams

Rare:
2 DDs

Model Count: Only 224, but after doing a few test schemes, I have no doubt these will be easier to paint than the orcs!

Now, the rest is where I am having trouble, and any help will be appreciated:

Mortals of Nurgle:
12 Warriors w/ HW/SH
12 Warriors w/ Halberd/SH
5 Marauder Horsemen
5 Chaos Knights
2x Nurgle Sorcerers

Now, that is the base list, and I need some help with ideas to flesh it out. I was thinking of giving the warriors each the MoN, but not sold on it yet. As for my other two hero slots, I was considering scratch-building a Sorc. Lord on Palaquinn, and perhaps either a Standard Bearer or a regular hero that could go with a small unit of Marauders (either a unit of 12 w/ flails or hand weapons). I could also add a chariot to the mix, with both units of Marauders, to increase the model-count, but I am still at a loss, really.

However, since I am 'painting what I have', that means no doggies for right now.

And finally, the last list is looking like this:

Tomb Kings: A Horse with No Name...:D

Core:
14 Skeletal Heavy Horsemen
14 Skeletal Heavy Horsemen
4 Swarm Bases

Special:
4 Chariots
3 Carrion
1 Tomb Spider

Rare:
2 SSC

I mainly would like some ideas as what to do with the hero selections. I do think I want an Icon Bearer that I could throw in with the 14 Heavy Horsemen, and know that I want 2 Liche Priests, but I do not know whether or not I want to try and include either a Casket, or a small unit of bowmen.

All help would be appreciated, and I can't wait for this tale to start!

A sorcerer lord on Palanquin will certainly help your points tally with the tale. Have you considered a Warshrine? 160pts with MoN and you have a blank canvas to work with! :D
EDIT: Definitely need a BSB with WoC so would be worth you doing one of those!

31-07-2009, 14:59
Well, my army will be an extension of my WoC (The Daemocratic War-party of Barack the Bringer of Change, Tzeentch Sorcerer Lord) army which I painted last year, so it won't be a legal army list by any stretch (only two units counting towards Core and 7 characters). Here is the list I am planning on using:

Jimmy the Noble
Chaos Lord @ 350 pts
- Mark of Tzeentch
- Sword of Might
- Collar of Khorne

Chosen of Insincerity
12 Chaos Chosen @ 350 pts
- Mark of Tzeentch
- Halberd
- Chaos armour & shield
- Full command
- Book of Secrets
- Banner of Rage

Donald the Destroyer
Giant @ 265 pts
- Mark of Slaanesh

Total points: 2651
(So a little more than 200 pts per month for 12 months, but I reckon that's okay since the army is quite small and a lot of it is in upgrades. If I just count bare-bones characters, it's actually rather less than 200 pts per month on average.)

Originally, my plan was more or less alternating between a character one month and a unit the other, to get some variation in. However, now it seems I might not have all that much time to paint come late spring (more on that later), so I might have to paint all the units in the autumn and all the characters in the new year (characters being much quicker to paint than units). This will skew my points somewhat in that I would be far ahead early on as my four most expensive units cost 1100 pts combined, but I would be be slowing down considerably towards the summer and I might not actually get the time to finish everything. I really hope people don't mind as I can't see any other way of getting things done other than painting everything in the autumn and posting according to the original schedule.

The list for my warriors of chaos army is almost ready:

Lord on juggernaught
5 Chaos knights

Exalted hero with additional handweapon
14 Chaos warriors with additional handweapon

15 Chaos warriors with additional handweapon
10 warhounds
20 Marauders
5 Marauder horsemen
1 Chaos chariot
1 Hellcanon

all with the mark of Khorne and Champion/Standard bearer & musician, where possible.

that should make up roughly 2000 pts.
As for a plan.... there is no plan yet.....

I'll probably just paint what I feal like with this lot. Expect this army to be shown every month until just about the end.

The Raven Host

Hero: Exalted Hero, Daemonic mount, MoT, sheild Pts. 175

Core: 5 marauder horsemen, MOT, epuipment, musician, Cheiftan Pts.128

Now as to Lizardmen I've changed my mind on them. I will not be painting them up this year but will save it for next years TOFP. I also have other plans. Will have up what i'm gonna paint soonish.

And best of luck to all of you.

OK I have ditched your Lizardmen from the list.

Is it allowed to tie together each months post with a short narrative (5-10 lines)? Or should that be put elswhere?
Positively encouraged. We love background. Write paragraphs of the stuff. It will be read and enjoyed by many.

I mainly would like some ideas as what to do with the hero selections.....

Ok, so this is it! There is no turning back this time.

The list :
King Thuar'ah (flail of skulls, collar, chariot)
The king's escort (3 chariot, icon of the sacred eye)
Liche priest (horse, dispel scroll)
Liche priest (cloak of the dunes, hieratic jar)
Liche priest (canopi, CASKET OF SOULS!)
The backbone (25 skeleton, light armour, shield, standar of undying)
The sidelines (2x 10 archers)
4 ushabti
5 light horseman
Screaming skull catapult (skull of the foe)
Tomb scorpion

The plan:

Month 1 : 10 archers, catapult (190 pts) [190]
Month 2 : 25 skeletons (250pts) [440]
Month 3 : liche priest on horse, light horseman (203pts) [643]
Month 4 : 10 archers, tomb scorpion (165pts) [808]
Month 5 : 3 chariot with banner (190pts) [998]
Month 6 : king in chariot (288pts) [1286]
Month 7 : 4 ushabti (260pts) [1546]
Month 8 : priest, claok, jar (160pts) [1706]
Month 9 : priest, casket of souls (300pts) [2006]
Month 10 : bone giant (220pts)
Month 11 : 20 tomb guard, full command (270pts)
Month 12 : 5 carrion (120pts)

The last 3 month are tentative, if I like painting the chariots I might end up painting another unit. Also I have another unit of 25 light armour shield skeleton assembled. I know the casket doesn't perform to good on the battlefield, but it's such a great model that I want to paint it. The plan is to get rid of all the skeleton painting in the beginning of the tale, and keep the good for later on when my painting (hopefully) improoves a bit. Also I might exchange the priest on foot for an earlier month if I get sick and tired of painting said plain skeletons.

To this is it for now. I shall post picture of WIP archer and regular skeletons later on in another post. I'll make a side blog to put more WIP pictures and expand the army beyong this tale.

thanks for looking and best of painting to everyone.

And off we go :D
Excellent.

Anyway, I really, really need to get microsoft office on my new pc, as I can't check the excel files with the tale-stats and my armylists...

But for now, I think it will do to say that my army will include at least the following:
-1 wyvern, be it Azhag if he is released, or a converted old one with savage orc warboss
-1 orc big boss on converted ironback boar
-1 goblin big boss with 2 hand weapons
-1 savage orc shaman

And it might include:
-a second wyvern... but I probably know for sure as soon as(/if) Azhag is released :)

I'm also thinking about some cool fluff. My first thoughts were going towards some kind of bosses meeting, which was ambushed, but somehow it doesn't seem interesting enough... so I need to put more thought into that. But it will follow soon enough. I'm planning at least 1 week off from work in august to devote some time to painting and fluff writing :)

@Deusmex: Those elves are looking brilliant. Definitely will blend in well to a forest. Can't wait to see some more!

@Avian: Chu Manfu is looking mighty wicked.

A sorcerer lord on Palanquin will certainly help your points tally with the tale. Have you considered a Warshrine? 160pts with MoN and you have a blank canvas to work with! :D
EDIT: Definitely need a BSB with WoC so would be worth you doing one of those!

Alright. I love your Chaos stuff, and have secretly followed your log for some time, so I will definitely take you advice on the forces of Chaos (especially since the last time I paid them any attention, they were the Realm of Chaos, and included beastmen...).

So, a Palanquin it is, and a BSB will be added. I am thinking of adding in a Warshrine, but that would probably be in place of a joker (since, as you said, that is a month right there). Thanks for the help!

It has started. This is it. :D

It is like nerdy lil' Christmas! I know I said that last year too, but it is just as fun, nonetheless!

You have to go with the casket just because it is such a cool model and makes a great center piece.

Well, my casket will be a custom (since I don't have the model yet), but I agree, one thing my army is missing is a centerpiece, and this would be perfect for it. Looks like I may just have to make up a warshrine too, so the Chaos will have a centerpiece....

Now I know how Doi felt...:D

Also, I opted for the 'Horse With No Name' to keep the music puns going (since it is a horse-heavy army), but it works so well that I think that will become my TKs army title for this tale.

Which brings me to an actual preview for my TK. I wanted to do a 'Harry' and 'Emperor Norton' take on the bases, since otherwise it would be a 'bare bones' visual (:D), and went for this for my Horsemen:

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p116/Nephilim_of_Sin/TK/DSCI0004-1.jpg

This will probably be my first entry with them for the Tale, because I really want to get that painted now. Plus, I made it with the Icon Bearer in mind, so it can be rearranged to actually be a ranked unit, without messing up the the flow of the bases.

EDIT:

@Braad Your initial fluff actually reminds me of a AD&D adventure I was making; the bosses were ambushed (and thus tricked) so that they would end up blaming the humans and mount a massive attack in retaliation.

While my failure trying to get two armies done during the last Tale is still pending (I still might get those skeletons done...), here I go again, trying thre armies this year (one is for 40K, though), although I should have even less time during the next twelve months than I had during the last.

It's Empire/Middenheim and Ogre Kingdoms this year.
I have a plan of what I want to paint, but there's no point to posting the list, really, as most likely I'll be changing it around all the time anyway.
Here's a pic of what's going to be first:
http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k395/EmperorNorton668/DSC01535.jpg

The brave and bold Teutogen Guard, to show those puny Goldswords what proper plate armour looks like. The unit should have at least 20 men, but I'll try to get some more done.
After that there will be three units of knights (Panthers and White Wolves) spread over two months.

For my Ogres I start with some Ironguts, three units of three each for the first two months. The first six are an attempt to turn a somewhat unfortunate ebay purchase into a fortunate one, i.e. I'm trying to repaint them. My entry for month three could be some Leadbelchers, but maybe I'll have to throw a character into the ring earlier than I'd like.

Essentially the only binding theme to this army will be that it will be an all infantry army, to paint the vast majority of Infantry from my 5000 DE army… which is themed around a Black Ark ruled by a high standing DE highborn. This particular list has a strong Khainite Theme to it, so it will be the army of the ToK that accompanies the Ark’s landing party to sacrifice and bloodlet… Blood for the (other) Blood God!

The List:
Characters:
Master, HA, Halberd, General (88)
Master BSB, HA, GW
Sorceress, Level 2 (135)
Death Hag, Cauldron of Blood (200)
Assassin, AHW (96)

Core:
20 Warriors, FC (155)
10 Repeater Crossbowmen, Shield (110)
18 Corsairs, FC (205)
5 Harpies (55)

Special:
18 Black Guard, FC (259)
14 Witch Elves, FC (165)
14 Executioners, FC (198)
5 Shades, AHW (85)

Rare:
2 Reaper Bolt Thrower (200)
War Hydra (175)

Total: 2249

The Plan:

I have no specific month by month plan as of yet… I do know that I will start by painting the RXBmen and the Shades, and then whatever catches my fancy and keeps me painting. I am signed up for the 100 pts/mth so as not to stress myself too much about painting, but ideally will try to paint 150-200 points a month. This can be accomplished as approximately 600 points of this army is already painted (included in the List for completion) and therefore really only about 1500 pts or so to do, hence the 150 pts/mth average I’m going for.

The Test Mini:

No photos here, but my sig should have a link to my old PLOG, that has been left love-less for months but will again be relaunched… the same colours (etc) will be used.

Work in Progress

Almost everything assembled and primed…

I really like Woodies done in browns (greens never look right) These remind me a little of Arhaliens woodies from the first tale.
If anything I would go a shade darker.

Hey! Another TOP starting? I had better get along this time!

I will do 2000 (well, probably 2250) points of Empire. It will be Averland, simply because i like the colours and its a rich province, so anything goes in the armylist :D

I have roughly the following to paint:

One homemade Arch Lector on Waraltar (he is too expensive to buy for me, so i am going to try to make one myself)
One Mounted Warrior Priest (gonna make him myself as well, no Luthor for me)
Two Wizards
One mounted BSB (i switch between a BSB and a wizard and two wizards)
25 Halberdiers (i know they suck, but they should be in all Empire armies)
25 Swordsmen
2 x 9 Swordsmen detatchments
25 Handgunners
10 Crossbowmen
12 Knights
5 pistoliers
2 Cannons
Hellblaster/Hellstorm

No plan... But probably gonna do infantry first so they are out of the way.

I am not going to do any fluff, and probably not going to spend too much time painting them. I really just want another army i can play with, and i do like them to be painted!

I'm painting 2000 points Beasts of Chaos.

This my second attempt at beasts I got 8 minis done the last time but at least I know how I want to paint them this time.

The Background/Theme:

Haven't given it much thought yet these things tend to evolve by themselves as I work on them.

The List:

There isn't really one at this stage given the Beasts of Chaos book will be updated during the tale so I'm just kinda winging it I'm not even sure if some of units I've planned will make the book.

Probably looking at

Wargor (GW, HA)
Bray Shaman (Lvl 2)
Bray Shaman (Lvl 1) or Wargor

3 Beast Herds 7 Gors (full command), 13 Ungors each
2 Units of 6 Hounds
1 Unit 18 Bestigors (full command)
2 Chariots
1 Unit 10 Centigors
Some Minotaurs
Chaos Giant
Spawn

Like I say depends on the new book really.

The Plan:

Month 1 Giant (225 pts.)
Month 2 Spawn, 6 Gors inc full command, 3 Ungors, 4 Hounds (181 pts.)
Month 3 Wargor 1, 6 Gors inc full command, 6 Ungors,4 Hounds (193 pts.)
Month 4 Wargor 2, 6 Gors inc full command, 2 Hounds, 12 Ungors (205 pts.)

after this point I don't really know it depends when the army is released. I don't intend on using old mini's if they are going to be updated. I can always painted the Shaggoth and some chaos ogres (iron guts) to keep me busy I might need to use a joker or 2 after that before the new releases.

Work in Progress:

I've converted the Giant up:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y244/davejc/Warhammer/Chaos/Giant1.jpg

He's had more work done since that photo. He's ready to paint now. I've started with the Giant as I don't have much time spare this month.

EDIT;

Test Piece:

I found a picture of one of my old Gors. This is pretty much the scheme I'm using I have one or 2 changes to make as this was done about 2 years ago but it's fairly close.

Hopefully I'll manage to finish this years tale, but my wife's expecting our second child at the end of January. I'll do my best and try to get loads painted in the run up to xmas. I've already given up on the british summer, so there's plenty of painting time available.
Plan of action is:-

Month 1-----stegadon 1 and 2
Month 2-----stegadon 1 and 2 + howdahs
Month 3 ----stegadon crew inc skink chief and priest
Month 4 ---- 24 skinks (stage 1 )
Month 5 ---- 24 skinks (stage 2 )
Month 6 ---- 2 Kroxigor
Month 7 ---- 20 saurus ( stage 1 )
Month 8 ---- 20 saurus ( stage 2 )
Month 9 ---- slann mage priest
Month 10 --- 20 temple guard ( stage 1 )
Month 11 --- 20 temple guard ( stage 2 )
Month 12 --- Chatax
Totals to about 2500 points with magic items, very HQ heavy points.

If I can find some time then I'll paint another stegadon and 10 skink skirmishers.

Here's one of the WIP stegadons. Just a basecoat of dead flesh/cayman green ( vallejo ) and 2 washes of thraka green.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y231/munkyf/TOFP0910/steg2pre1.jpg

and here's the other one. Skin is finished but the rest still needs lots of work.

Wow, lots of great stuff. The elves in muted colours look particularly nice. All the brilliant WoC armies are making my feel that my painting/modelling skills are thoroughly inadequate!

Don't ... this is not a painting competition. You are only in competition with your self and your motivation to get stuff painted. We are all painting at our own level. I guarantee whatever level you are at now ... you will be a better painter by the end of this tale having got in the painting habit and painting something every month.

Im bringing the full fury of Athel Loren to the table. Heck yeah, we are talking about the grumpy spirits of Loren and not the Elves that just hang there and exploit it/us. *grumbles* Im aiming for a 2250 army, I don't have the models yet, but most of 'em.

Which brings me to an actual preview for my TK. I wanted to do a 'Harry' and 'Emperor Norton' take on the bases, since otherwise it would be a 'bare bones' visual (:D), and went for this for my Horsemen:

What a great start, first day and 3 pages long.

I think the painting standard here is amazing to be honest. I dont know where to begin.

Cant wait to see Sullys tartan Orcs.

C cohen that skink looks great,The speckles are a nice touch.

Elazar I love the purple and white schem very striking and well executed.

Avian, that conversion is kewl.

Nephilim of sin the bases are a great idea and nicely done.

Emperor Norton I love the skin tones on the ogres, and thats a hefty amount of bearded madmen you got there.

Ambassador Dax I tzink with zees Giant you may be spoiling us. What a way to burst into the project.

Dino the blue really jumps out, then you notice the great skin tones too.

Fluffy stuff the Steg is awesome, really vibrant

This is looking very promising and its just the first day :D.

Hello all. Wondering: is it too late to switch back to 3k of WoC?
I'm lovin' everything y'all's gots by the way; I'll have some stuff up in a few days.

@C-Cohen: Great test model, let's see more!

@Elazar: Nice paining on the knights;those Dragon Ogres are wierd, dude. But in a good way. Much more chaos-ey than the available models.

@Deusmex: nice drab-looking models. I think your armies'll come out with a very dark, realistic feel to them.

@Avian: Must agree with Deusmex, great conversion:)

@Nephilim: Those bases are epic.

@EmperorNorton: I'm expecting an epic army after seeing your massed unit of guard. The Ogres are lookin' beastly as well.

@Dax: Not very subtle are you? Still masterful as ever, makin' me jealous.

@Dino: Great marauders, let's see some more paint on them Dwarves!

@Fluffystuff: What can I say, that's an awesome technique you've got. Can't wait to see it finished!

Hi guys! Being new to this, I feel the need to introduce the army that I intend to paint over the coming year: 2000 pts worth of Bretonnians.

The Background/Theme:

Not much to be honest. This army is intended to become my tournament army, so I will not skip units to keep the fluff in the army. I do however want to try and model my army in a way that it resembles a Bretonnian crusading army avenging a raid on a small town. Therefore all my models will be based on greenstuff-casted cobblestones (or half-cobblestone-half dirt) and the larger bases will have pieces of ruin from the burned-down village on them, I will try to decorate things with skulls and general craft-tools to enhance the "village" feeling.

The List:

The list in the Plan below is only a general outline. I have not played battles with bretonnians yet, so I might change it if I feel the need to.

The Plan:
Heres is my Painting plan. I have painted some stuff before the tale (see plog in sig) and I will try to continue this route.

Month 1: 20 Men at Arms, Full Command (127)
1 Paladin BSB, Barded Bretonnian Warhorse, Wyrmlance, Virtue of Duty (124) [251]
Month 2: 8 Knights Errant, Full Command, Errantry Banner (201) [452]
Month 3: 1 Bretonnian Lord, Grail Vow, Royal Pegasus, Lance, Shield, Cuirass of Fortune, Tres of Isoulde, Virtue of Heroism (277) [729]
Month 4: 3 Pegasus Knights, Musician (175) [904]
Month 5: 2 Damsels on Horses (3 Scrolls, Chalice of Malfleur) (230) [1134]
Month 6: 5 Grail Knights, Standard Bearer (210) [1344]
Month 7: 3 Pegasus Knights, Musician (175) [1519]
Month 8: 6 Knights Errant (127) [1646]
Month 9: 5 Mounted Yeomen (75)
1 Trebuchet (90) [1811]
Month 10: More Knights (KE/KOTR)

I'm not sure if I'm meant to include command and/or magic items in the unit cost or if it's common practice to calculate the 200 pts painted on bare bones units?

The Test unit (also see my plog in sig):
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww212/stonetroll/Army01_small.jpg

Work in Progress
Started the BSB, hope to finish him early (will need some advice on him soon) and then continue on the M@A (Shields done):

http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww212/stonetroll/IMG_1768.jpg

Good luck to all involved! I am allready jealous of some of the stuff I have seen here (especially the greenstuffed beastman giant!) and know that I will not be one of the most impressive armies, but I'm just doing whats in my reach!

The base isn't quite finished, as the Cold One is currently disappearing abruptly into the mud. I need to add water effects to make it look like he's being stomped into a marsh.

Salamanders:
http://images.fotopic.net/yw1vyv.jpg
Mostly done, worth half points in this tale (if that).

Cold One Riders:

These chaps should be my first month's painting. Built them last year but they're untouched (bar some experimental colouring on one model and drybrushed bases).

A few comments on what other folks have in the offing...

Sully: Like the sound of your Orcs. Should be a great laugh. Will they all be armed with broken Buckfast bottles and deep-fried squigs?

C-Coen: Sounds great, nice colourscheme too (and a cool idea to add a quiver of javelins).

Elazar The Glorified: Love those Cold One conversions! Simple idea but it works really well.

Nephilim of Sin: Fantastic looking bases! Should really help liven up the TK. What c olour will you use for the stone bits?

fluffystuff: Loving that Steggie. The contrast on the skin is beautiful!

stonetroll: Fantastic Brets, you must be going made painting those M@A shields though...

Only one day and people seems to be really to great a start.

@nephilim of sin : great base... but 8x2 isn't this a bit odd to field a unit. it might be hard to move around the battlefield.

@Dax : Great giant, it's a really nice conversion, it looks quite good

@stonetroll : Your painting is really good, the colours are vibrant and very clean. I admire you patience on all those shield. great work.

@mcMullet : great flavor for the carnausor's base.

Like I said in my planning post, here are a couple of WIP of my tomb king.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2574/3775743781_4abf2aafc0.jpg

Those two are black undercoat, khemri brown, devlan mud wash, snakebite leather dry brush and skull white dry brush

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2631/3776551350_d02b0c4bcc.jpg

This one is black undercoat, iyanden darksun, devlan mud wash, snakebite leather dry brush and skull white dry brush.

The shields and headband and details will be blue and gold (i know not original but it looks good), with a couple of touch of red and purple (wrist wrap and such). I would like to have some feedback on the skeleton colour, and also I'm looking for a recipe for the sand base.

Thanks for looking and keep up the great start.

Thanks for the great comments already guys, I do appreciate it! I was hoping the Grecian (or are they roman?) style columns wouldn't look out of place, but figured since that is what they used in the army book, that is what I might as well use as well.

As to the color, I am sort of at a loss right now. I am thinking of perhaps making them sandstone-ish, so if anyone has a recipe, I would love to have it. That way, I figure they will look in place, but I will still make the sand around them a lighter color, so it doesn't blend in too well.

@jahorin: Loving to see some more TK wip getting posted. Don't worry if the color scheme is original or not, so long as it looks good. I'll be honest, I really don't see where the Skull White comes into play on the two particular skeletons, but the third one does seem to look a bit brighter. I prefer the third myself, but that really depends if you personally want the 'bleached bone' look, or the 'kept underground for centuries look' (which would be darker).

@McMullet: That Charging Stegadon is a beast! It looks wonderful! I don't think I actually ever saw it with the Howdah on, but it looks amazing.

@Stonetroll: Include command and what not if you wish. It does help. I tried not including a lot of upgrades last tale, and it did make things a bit harder, but if you are faster at painting than I am (which, well, most people are :p), then go without, that way you'll get more done! Those Brettonians are looking might nice, and takes loads of dedication with all of the different heraldry. How did you get the 'off white' look of the shields?

@Fluffystuff: Glad to have you back, especially since you made it so close last time! Those Stegadons are looking impressive, as always. I know they will turn out great.

@Dino: I was actually able to tell those were yours without even seeing your name attached. Glad to see you sticking with Dwarves, even if they are not of the evil variety. I might need to steal your hammerers idea if/when I get back to my own lil' throng. The Marauder horsemen are looking suitable great as well, and I like the addition of the bitz to the base.

@EmperorNorton: Those Ogres are starting to shape up really well. I am not normally a fan of the 'normal skin' with them, but these are starting to look ace. I especially like how the weapons are starting off so far.

@Dax: That giant is just amazing. There is little else that can be said about the awesomeness.

Those bases are looking great! I must ask though: are you really going to be fielding them 8 wide? Seems a little bit unwieldy.

@nephilim of sin : great base... but 8x2 isn't this a bit odd to field a unit. it might be hard to move around the battlefield.

You guys had me worried that I had made too many there, for a sec. I actually had to go back and count them myself just to be sure! They are 7x2.:D Might be a bit unwieldy, but they are made so that they can be rearranged (one with have an Icon Bearer, one might have a Liche Priest), and thus could turn into 5x3s without taking the basing effect away.

Wow, we really are off to a great start. Keep 'em coming guys!

Here's my current list:

Ravn, Sorcerer Lord of Tzeentch
level 4, disc, Enchanted Shield, Golden Eye of Tzeentch, Dispel Scroll, Infernal Puppet

Frost, Chaos Sorcerer of Tzeentch

5x Chaos Knights of Tzeentch
FC

Warshrine of Tzeentch

Hellcannon

10x Chosen Warriors of Tzeentch
FC, great weapons, Collar of Khorne

I might do some more heroes, and I want to make room for a standard bearer, too... Hmmm...

Plans... not sure. I'll have to think of how I want to approach this.

Suppose I'd better post my painting list then:

1 - Khorne Hero on Juggernaut
2 - 10 Marauders
3 - 10 Marauders
4 - Tzeench Sorcerer on Disc
5 - 10 Warriors
6 - 10 Warriors

Yes it's extremely equipment heavy and its also 100% legal :evilgrin:adds up to 3000 points. Like I said, I'll post some pics ASAP.

As for everyone that's gotten started already -- great work all! Can't wait to see more.

@Fluffystuff:
Stunning job on the steggy so far. Glad to have you along for the ride.

Thanks for that. I had forgotten just how cool the Carny was. now i am looking forward to more dino madness again.
@Jahorin:
The skellies still seem very ... dark ... is it something you are aiming for, the photos or do they need another dry brush of bleached bone?
@Nephlim:
Recepie for sandstone. You can't go too far wrong with a sold coat of snakebiteleather dry brushed with a few snakebite and bleached bone mixes until you get the contrast and lightness you are after.

I have to say I love 'cream' TK. When I get around to mine I am defo going with cream shields. Maybe the odd bit of cowskin thrown in.
But these look great.

You gentlemen make me quite, quite demotivated and quite, quite humbled. If this is the level of dedication and skill you show before the event has even begun... I can't even compete with that.

OK, what I have done, no actual work on the miniatures so far, however:
-ordered the bases (now brace yourselves - I got them from the land down under and I live in central Europe... my fiancée was even more dumbstruck than she was furious);

-bought some photoetched fern for the bases;

-made several concept sketches for things as conversions, arrangement of units and so on, nothing too fancy;

-tried a few color schemes for non-standard orc skin. Still not satisfied with what was arrived at.

Wow, im impressed with the dedication people have made to come up with a solid plan for what to paint each month. Unfortunatliy for me; im not so good at planning.

I will be adding on my existing warriors of chaos army.
What i will be painting is;
- 5 Chaos Knights (full command) 250 points
- 5 Marauder Horsemen (shields, spears, javelins, champion, musician) 103 points
- 1 Hellcannon 205 points
- 1 Sorcerer (lvl 2, +xx amounts of magic items) 110
- 2 exalted champions (the AoW and the khorne skull helm ones) 2 x ~110 points
- 10 chosen w shields, full command 240 points
(I hope i will get all of these done, and if i am lucky i will finish of 2 dragon ogres that i have lying around (but we'll see if that will make an apperance in ToFP))

All i really have decided on is what to start painting for the first month;
These guys:

Sorcerer and hellcannon crew!

And as for colour scheme for the knights/exalted champions/chosen:

And as Harry said earlier, don't let yourself be discouraged. You don't have to "compete", you just have to be happy with what you get done.
There are a lot of very good painters here and I often feel a bit jealous as I consider myself a mediocre painter at best, but practice is the only way to improve and this Tale has the added bonus of lots of friendly advice.

EDIT: After having a look at your log I feel silly about my little pep talk, as your stuff is brilliant. Your dragon could kick my dragon's tail.

Hello all, it is about time that I posted my WIP High Elves. I'm in the Mens league. :)

Theme
I do not like the typical 'white' look of the High Elves. I reckon a light grey & blue colour scheme would look much better. After all white doesn't keep too well on the battle field!
I do not plan on doing many (if any) conversions with this army, but they will all be GW models.

The List
I do not really have a formal list as of yet. More like a mound of models that I've brought. Instead I shall list what I intend to paint.

Prince on foot
Commander BSB on steed.
Mage on Steed.
Commander on foot.

20 Spearelves
10 Archers (done)
15 Sea Guard
2x6 Silver Helms
15 Pheonix Guard
15 White Lions
1 Tiranoc Chariot
5 Shadow Warriors
1 Bolt Thrower.

The Plan
I must confess I am no good at planning and have started a fair few of the models already! To slow down and fully participate with the tale I have diverted some of my attentions to painting up my LOTR SBG Rohirrim.
Nonetheless I love painting so I am 99% likely to finish all too early.

The Test Mini...er I mean Unit

Here is the unit of Archers that I have already gone and finished. Tell me what you think. I like them! The ink makes them look a bit more dirty and 'battle worn'. :)

Work in Progress
I am working on the Commander BSB & Prince. Seems a good place to start! *offically*

First of all, let me say this: I'm very impressed with the work you guys have done so far. You all paint very well and some of you have some pretty interesting ideas. I can't wait to see more! :D

Alright, so I've done some experimental painting with skinks! They turned out a little darker than I had intially wanted, but good nontheless. So what I've learned is black undercoat combined with citadel washes produces very dark models.

And I do of course have some pictures for you, but I had to use my 2 megapixel cellphone camera to take the pictures, because someone else is using our camera (and they are up in the mountains right now). Anyway, here goes!

The brighter one (tho still pretty dark)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/TheMaester/DSC00455.jpg

The darker scheme
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/TheMaester/DSC00456.jpg

Both
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/TheMaester/DSC00457.jpg

I'll continue to experiment a little.. as long as they all look blue/turquoise, they'll look just fine together. So these are my cohort skinks. I'll try white undercoat for my skirmisher skinks. Hopefully that will produce more vivid colors.

Yay! The tale begins!

I'm, by the sounds of things, one of the many who have never gotten round to painting a full army - but hopefully this is all about to change!

It's 2,000 pts of Middenheimers for me - not fully fluffy for the Cult Of Ulric (I couldn't afford all of the figs, even if I could find em'!) but hopefully with a definate Middenland feel to the force.

The look / theme for the army is one of a mixed standard Empire force combined with strong Ulric & White Wolf influences - imagining a time when the Middenheimers have to accept the fact that they have to embrace the power of black powder weapons and make compensations for alternative units within their ranks in order for the province to not only defend itself, but to continue to survive.

Captain BSB with full plate and Hammer Of Judgement on Barded Steed

Warrior Priest of Ulric with Van Horstmann's on Barded Steed

Amber Wizard with level 2 upgrade and Rod Of Power

Amber Wizard with level 2 upgrade and Orb Of Thumder

x20 Swordsmen with FC
Det. of x10 Handgunners
Det. of x10 Halberdiers

x5 Knights Of The White Wolf

x5 Knights Of The White Wolf

x15 Flagellants with Prophet Of Doom

x10 Handgunners with Marksman with Repeater Handgun

x10 Archers with Huntsman upgrades

x20 Greatswords with FC
Det. of x10 Halberdiers

x1 Great Cannon

x1 Great Cannon

x1 Mortar

x1 Hellblaster Volley Gun

Comes in at a smidge under 2,000 points

I'm planning on starting out with either a couple of the characters or a character and a R&F unit to get my hand / eye back into painting. There is some minor conversion work and some major kit-bashing going on throughout this army :D

Any advice on painting white with dark shadowing is appreciated, as every time I try it looks.. well... pants.

Enough of my ranting - the Tale has begun! Good luck one and all!

Ahhhhhhh, the sweet smell of a new TOFP, well I guess I'd better do my intro thing, so as not to let those annoying posts to Harry go to waste

DA CRONIKELS OF LITTLE DESTRY

Da Feme
The rise and fall from a small warband to a full scale waaagh!!! is a long and daunting task for the many Warbosses who have (or are) traveled this route. No matter how many have accomplished such a feat and live to this day, another will arise and take that ones place.

But our story begins much smaller, with nothing more than a Night goblin named Destry-shunned from his own tribe after a misunderstanding between his old tribes warboss's favourite meat looker-after snotling and Destry's pet Squig Gluck-, trying to carve out is own niche' with his ever faithful (and bitey) pet squig, Gluck. What friends and enemies await Desty? Unlikely Alliances will be made, and even unluckier enemies will be made due to accidents Destry's lawyers have urged him not to comment on. Will he reach his dreams of becoming a mighty Waaghboss!!? You'll just have to tune in every month to find out now won'tcha.

Da List
Destry and Gluck-Night Goblin Bigboss (Boss from bfsp)
?????????-Night Goblin Bigboss
?????????-Night Goblin Shaman
?????????-x 10 Spider Riders
?????????-x 20 Night Goblins (w/ spears
?????????-x 20 Night Goblins (w/ spears
?????????-x 20 Night Goblins (w/ shortbows)
?????????-x 10 Black Orcs

I'll post the points for when i post the models, but all in all this army comes in just a little bit over 1000pts, at 1000 and 1 pts (and the ????'s are just the name holders till I divuldge the continuing tale of Destry and Gluck)

Da Plan
Well, hmmmmm, a plan you say? Well I intend to paint the units in the month their specific story arc is revealed, and prepared to be shocked by my terrible story telling!
Da Testy
well this guy was painted before the tale and still serves its purpose as the testy. He won't be counted towards the end count up.

This will be a tough nut to crack, i've never finished an army yet, but i'm pumped to the max and this time things will be different. So with paint brush in hand, I bid you all good luck and may we complete this journey together.

The Background/Theme:

I've decided to go with an all mounted list using mainly savage orcs and golbin spider riders. There will be afew miner conversions mainly the chariots and the warboss. I will be using the beastmen chariots as they look crude and fit the savage orc theme. So apart from the the spider riders the majority of the miniatures will be metal.

The List:
Characters
Savage Orc Warboss riding Wyvern. (403 pts)
Light armour , enchanted shield , Iron gnashas ,
collar of Zorga & Akrit axe

Savage Orc BigBoss riding in chariot (195 pts)
pigstikka

Goblin shaman riding in chariot(165 pts)
staff of sneaky stealin

Goblin shaman riding in chariot(165 pts)
staff of sorcery & Nibbla's itty ring

Core units
5 x Spider Riders (76 pts)
shield, spear , bow and musician

5 x Spider Riders (76 pts)
shield, spear , bow and musician

5 x Spider Riders (76 pts)
shield, spear , bow and musician

5 x Spider Riders (76 pts)
shield, spear , bow and musician

Special Units
5 x Savage Orc Big un's on Boars(228 pts)
spear , shield , full command and the banner of butchery

7 x Savage Orc Boar boyz(213 pts)
spear , shield & full command

1 x Boar Chariot(80 pts)

1 x Boar Chariot(80 pts)

Rare units
2 x snotling pump wagons(80 pts)

2 x snotling pump wagons(80 pts)

The Plan:
Is to get the core units painted in the first two months while the enthusiasm is still high. Then do a character choice followed by a special choice and so on.

Month 1 2 x units of spider riders & 1 pump wagon(192)
Month 2 2 x units of spider riders & 1 pump wagon(192)
Month 3 Goblin shaman in chariot & 1 pump wagon(205)
Month 4 Savage orc boar boyz(big un's)(228)
Month 5 2 x boar chariot(160)
Month 6 Goblin shaman in chariot & 1 pump wagon(205)
Month 7 savage orc boar boyz(213)
Month 8 savage orc big boss chariot(195)
Month 9 Wyvern(200)

The Test Mini:
Not done one yet.

Well... after glueing together the shocking amount of a total of four (4) chaos warriors i decided that it was time to use a different head. The skeleton head was something that i had lying around from one of the old skeleton multipart kits.
As for secret undead theme; not really, even tho also 2 other of my models got skeleton heads. One is a old hunch-back warrior with 2 halberds (yes, it does look as silly as it sounds), the other is a hunch-back knight banner bearer.

Hey all,

Sorry, I didn't see this thread until now. I will be doing a Dogs of War army 2000 points.
I am not sure what order I will paint them in, definitly pikes first. But the list looks like this:

Truthsayer
Wizard lord
Paymaster
Captain on pegasus

20 pikemen
20 Ricco's Republican Guard
9 duellists
9 duellists
10 crossbowmen
10 crossbowmen

10 Lumpin Croop's fighting cocks
1 maneater
20 dwarfs
(maybe) 4 Ironguts

cannon

This is over 2000, I hope that's ok. And also, is it ok if we have already painted some of the models? I have already painted 5 halflings and started 5 pikes.

This army will be converted mostly(hard to get Dogs of War minis these days). I will be doing a mercenary Averland army, relying heavily on the Empire range of miniatures.

Cheers

Hey All,

First I will say it's great to see so many posts already, and its only the first day!

This is my first attempt at this (although I followed the progress of last years TOFP with interest) and I am rather ambitiously/(stupidly) going to try and get two armies painted - 2000 points of Vampire Counts and 1000 points of High Elves.

Vampire Counts

I am painting this army entirely from scratch so I will be painting a legal list. I got all of this over a year ago and they have only recently been assembled for the TOFP.

I have a list of the things I intend to paint but Im not sure of the set order, it may be a case of what I feel like painting at the time.

20 Skeletons, spears, f/com............200pts (1st month)
10 Direwolves................................80pts
10 Crypt Ghouls.............................80pts
10 Grave Guard, g/weapons, f/com..160pts
Corpse Cart...................................75pts
40 Zombies....................................80pts
2 x vampires.................................200pts
Count Mannfred.............................475pts
Varghulf.......................................175 pts

Total 1,525.

The balance of this I intent to make up with some converted Black Knights as well as a few other items I'm yet to decide/purchase. I reckon painting all those zombies will turn me in to one :chrome::skull:.

High Elves

The 1000 point force I intend to paint over the coming year is to supplement a small painted army that has been coming together since Feb '09, due to another painting project on a local Cornish forum.

Therefore the models I paint will not be a legal list in their own right but will be mainly special units. As I will be buying these as I go along I dont really have a set plan. To start with I will be painting Sword Masters.

I should get round to posting some test minis/WIP later in the month.

Cheers,

Hairypig

PS: Sorry for waffling on so much but I think I got a bit over excited. Must be all the glue fumes.

2000 pts of Bretonnians

The Background/Theme:

No background at the moment really, might think of some later on.

Grail Reliquae + 6 x Battle pilgrims (172)
Rare:
Grail Knights x 5 (220)
Field trebuchet (100)

(most units have full command)

Total Points: 2045

The Plan:

Month 1 35x() Men at Arms (229)
Month 2 Bretonnian Lord (205)

[2045]

Other stuff i would like to get painted this year:
34 previous edition bowmen
12 previous edition knights
The Green Knight

The Test Mini:
66060
A quick archer i did a while back, just brown and grey colours, men at arms and archers will be pretty similar. Bases for the whole army are going to be simply codex grey drybrush over chaos black spray then with some snow flock and tiny patches of static grass.
Work in Progress
66061
35 men at arms this month  Im off school for now so this is the best time to do it, if i dont do it now it probably wont get done

Hi everyone! Wow, there's a ton of great stuff already! I am in this year with my Empire...and that's all this time, I swear. I also swear I'm going to stick with it this time. :)

For my first month, I will be doing up 40 free company. Here's a shot of most of them, all primed up. Since this shot I have gone over them with black paint to catch the bits I missed, and I started painting flesh (I like to work from the inside out and cover my mistakes as I go).

Hey Everyone,

Theres so much great stuff on here that I couldn't begin to comment on everyone, from my browse through I can see this is going to be quite an event.

Im going to be painting 2,000 pts of Lizardmen and 1,000 points of dwarves.

For my Lizardmen force I already have a pile of unpainted and half-finished mini's, my finished painted 2,000 points should consist of:-

Alot of skinks :cheese:,
2 units of 25 saurus
20 temple guard
Slann Mage Priest
Stegadon
Saurus Scar Vet
Jungle Swarms
Chakkax
Salamanders

Once Ive progressed through all of this I will have to top up my collection with additional models. Probably another Stegaon or Razordons, am loving the new models.

I have a small dwarf force- already painted made up from the basic core that comes with the batallion. My 1000 points from this tale will just be adding particular units to that force, using the same colour scheme.

I will post up some WIP/tester models a bit later on.

Great so far everyone, lets get some more pics!!

i will be doing a fairly retro orc and goblin army with lots of models likely to be older than some of the people in this tale. when i was a kid i first walked into games workshop not knowing what all these cool models in blister packs were.nearly 2 decades later ive finally been able to get my hands on these very characterful models (via ebay).

the army itself will consist of a number of chariots and whatever else i can get my hands on from the woefully addicted ebay!

nearer the time i will have to ask advice on how to post photos. i knowpeople use photobucket. anyway better get painting...

Evening all,

Thought id post my test models so far.

High Elf Swordmaster

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss181/fetidpaws/swordmaster.jpg

Im fairly happy with this chap, I think im going to paint the rest this way. Maybe try and keep the chainmail a bit tidier. But the links are just so damn small.

Skelletons

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss181/fetidpaws/skellingtons.jpg

http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss181/fetidpaws/skellingtons2.jpg

Ive painted these in a very lazy fashion, but I quite like the dark result. I havnt based them yet because Im not sure how to proceed. Will obviously continue the basing technique through the rest of the army. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hairypig :)

Blimey! I need to pay more attention to what's going on if the new thread can be up to 5 pages in a day...

A lot of stuff to comment on already I see. So I'll just go with a general "good start" guys. Hope you can maintain you pace throughout the tale. :)

Doi: Needs more Ironguts! ;)

As for myself, I will be aiming for 1000pts of greenskins (mostly orcs) for a small Mighty Empires Campaign but, depending on progress, may switch to a full 2000pt list if some sort of miracle happens. I won't post my list yet, it's not very interesting and is subject to change at whim. :D

So I'm doing the Dogs of War. They aint dead yet people. My army is going to be running a Miragliano red and green colour scheme. No real theme though, just the reds and the greens.

At this stage, my first month will be the Marksmen of Miragliano plus my Paymaster on foot. At some stage, it's likely I'll be doubling up on slots (like rare slots, hero slots, etc) but I will be sure to have a legal army in any rights.

So here's what I intend to paint up

Lords and Heroes
Hireling Wizard Lord
Paymaster
Asarnil the Dragonlord
Malakai Makaisson
Mercenary Captain on Foot

Core
Marksmen of Miragliano
Volands Venators
Some Duelists
Some Crossbowmen

Special
Lumpin Croops Fighting Cocks
Halfings
Dwarfs
Some sort of Ogres. Probably Man-Eaters

Rare
Mercenary Cannon
Asarnil the Dragonlord
Malakai Makaisson's Goblin Hewer

Which should be around 2000 points in total. I'd definately like to get some Pikemen at some point, but that'll be a lot later on (As my recent purchases to get the army kickstarted put a rather large hole in my pocket which I don't wish to emulate anytime soon :)).

Hi all

I will be painting vampires for this TOP.

The core of the army will be

18 Crypt Ghouls

18 Crypt Ghouls

18 Crypt Ghouls

18 Crypt Ghouls

23 Grave Guards
Full command

5 Dire Wolves

5 Dire Wolves

5 Dire Wolves

5 Dire Wolves

2 corpse carts

5 wraiths

Vapire Lord and Vampire

Wight Lord BSB.

the theme will be the undead from the dark forest, using the GW trees without folage and forest scenic bases.

The army has been undercoated and sitting on shelf for the last few years but I've been flat out painting LotR and other games systems.

Good luck all

Hey guys
After browsing through the thread it looks like we are going to have a spectacular tale on our hands here. Myself i'll shall be doing bretonnians. My theme, well watch the movie Kingdom of Heaven and you will see my kmights livery's on the big screen :D

Anyway here is the list i have been working on

Bretonnian Lord, Grail Vow, Royal Pegasus, Armour of Agilulf, Sword of the Lady's Champion, Mantle of the Damsel Elena, Gauntlet of Duel-285pts

Paladin, BSB, Barded Warhorse, Virtue of Duty, Warbanner-129pts

Damsel, lvl 1, Chalice of Malfleur, Dispel scroll-115pts

8 x KOTR, Full Command-216pts

9 x Knight's Errant, Full Command, Errantry Banner-226pts

10 x Peasant Bowmen, Skirmish-70pts

10 x Peasant Bowmen-60pts

10 x Peasant Bowmen-60pts

25 x Men-at-arms, Full Command-152pts

3 x Pegasus Knights, Gallant-165pts

3 x Pegasus Knights, Gallant-165pts

6 x Mounted Yeomen, Musician-97pts

6 x Grail Knights, Full command-258pts

Total-1991pts

Now that is 13 units so i'm thinking a unit a month with one month clumping the two peasent bowmen units together. But the best laid plans always go astray so we'll soon see how long it takes me to break this trend. Right now i'm working on my BSB which is half down so i should easily get it finished by the end of the month. Until then my friends.

I'm very keen to see him painted up Dark Apostle!

If that where me with a great Arch Lector model I would not hesitate to paint him up like my avatar!

(Which I have done with my standard GW priests :))

Now I know how Doi felt...

Cold, alone and wondering what that smell is? If not I'm confused :p

But yes centre-piece conversions are good. Just don't end up like me and my Gobbos and try and have more centre-pieces then normal units :p

-ordered the bases (now brace yourselves - I got them from the land down under and I live in central Europe... my fiancée was even more dumbstruck than she was furious)

Yay, more Back-2-Basixs goodness. Which bases did you go with?

And looking at your log, you have nothing to worry about skill wise. You can do more then I can.

Doi: Needs more Ironguts!

I've read that those are apparently better, but I just like the Bull models more ;). Once I push the army past 2000pts however...

@ Elazar the Glorified: Seriously, the best colour scheme I've seen for Slaanesh ever. And superbly painted too. You shall be watched, you have been warned :p

@ Deusmex: Very nice scheme. I have to agree with Harry that WE look better in the muted tones.

@ Avian: I think you painting character heavy this time around is for the best, because I get to see more fantastic character names! Purely based on names I'm looking forward to Jimmy the Noble and Donald the Destroyer

@ EmperorNorton: I'm liking the Ogres already. Is it Tallarn Flesh, Ogryn Flesh and then highlights for the skin? That's how I'm planning on doing mine.

@ dax: I cannot wait to see that giant finished up. If you can paint half as good as you can convert we are in for a treat this TOFP.

@ Dino: It looks to be another excellent year of work from you again. The Marauder conversions are ace and the Dwarves are looking lovely in the red colours.

@ fluffystuff: So we're going from your amazing VC army in the last TOFP to your fantastic Lizardmen this time, can't wait.

@ stonetroll: very nice. I hope you've got an imagination, because comign up with new heraldries on each model has been the downfall of several Brettonian players in my area. And it is up to you whether you do or dont include upgrades in your 2000pts. Most people do as then you get a fieldable 2000pt army at the end, as opposed to 2000+. And being able to just paint a 200+pt lord one month can let you get back on track if you fall behind.

@ McMullet: Looking forward to seeing more of this army again. But then who doesn't like seeing big dinosaurs.

@ jahorin: Looking good. What's the plan for the bases?
Desert or soil?

@ Zujara:
The Tomb Kings look interesting with the cream coloured cloth/shields (or is that just the photo and they are white?). Just don't let your dog near your Bone Giant :p

@ Schmacker: The two tone skinks are ace. I'm pretty sure there is another log on Warseer with a similar scheme if you are looking for inspiration (might be a Southlands army)

@ Giledan: Nice Khorne scheme. The gold trim is especially good. Gives it a more regal look then just blatant "Blood for the Blood God!".

@ badgeraddict: Nice archers. The scheme is a nice divergence from the traditional colours while still looking the same too.

@ Edahlo: I prefer the lighter scheme, though the face on teh brighter one in the last picture needs to bee toned down a bit. The one in the first picture is the way to go.

@ D35t0y3r: Very nice, I really like the weathering on the robes.

@ rhys60: Very nice. The peasant is looking good. Good luck painting 35 peasant buggers for the first month!

@ Arduhn: Nice to see you back again. Best of luck painting 40 guys this month.

@ SuavelyDunn: Is listing your Dwarves as 1999pts a cunning way to not be forced to paint 2000pts a month in the men's league? :p Looking forward to seeing what you come up with this time.

@ Dark Apostle: Very nice Arch Lector. I'm just going to lump you in with dax in the "People who are better with GS then me" group...

Hi there,

My Dark Elf Army will (hopefully) look like this:

4 Lords (1 on Dark Steed, 1 on Manticore, 1 on Cold One, 1 on foot)
4 Sorceresses (2 on foot, 1 on Dark Pegasus, 1 on Cold One)
3 Assassins
2x 10 Dark Elf Repeater Crossbowmen
25 Dark Elf Warriors
2x 5 Dark Riders
15 Har Ganeth Executioners
20 Black Guard
5 Cold Ones
2 Reaper Bolt Throwers
1 War Hydra

I don't really count points since I'm more of a 'paint what I like' kinda guy. I will however post on average 200 pts a month, with the exception of characters.

I have painted 3 test minis for the core units of my Dark Elf Army. I decided to paint them in traditional Liche Purple, highlighted up to Warlock Purple. I quite like the shields on the warriors. Hope you do too! The Special Units will also have Regal Blue up to Enchanted Blue to add some variation.

http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu133/Matrim__Cauthon/Warriors2.jpg

http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu133/Matrim__Cauthon/DarkRider.jpg

For my first month of painting I plan to paint the Crossbowmen, and a converted Dark Elf Dreadlord on Dark Steed (I plan to make Tyrion a Dark Elf ).

Keep up the great work everyone!

@Harry: I'd like to paint an Empire army too Harry, 2000 pts! They will include some Witch Hunters and Sisters of Sigmar from my Mordheim Collection.

OK I have settled on a theme for my Empire Army
This is what I am going with:

The Reiksguard.

The Empires army is made up of different forces from its contingent states. However the backbone of the Empire army is the Reiksguard, who are recruited across the Empire from amongst the elder sons of the nobility . They accompany the Emperor in war and peace. The Reiksguard is the personal army and personal bodyguard of the Emperor on the battlefield and in the course of his ceremonial duties.
The Reiksguard forms an elite core of highly trained, expensively-equipped troops who are loyal to the Emperor in person. Although few in number, the Reiksguard is the most important part of the army and usually forms up in the centre around the Emperor himself.

The Reiksguard is divided into warriors who fight on foot, refered to as the Reiksguard Regiment and a mounted arm known as the Reiksguard Knights.

The Reiksguard Knights are the Emperors best troops and form the core of the Imperial army. Many a battle has been won by the decisive charge by the Reiksguard knights.
The Knights carry tall lances and ride fierce stallions. The Reiksguard wear magnificent gilded armour, highly polished to a mirror like finish, scarlet sashes and their hems are adorned with tall, feathered red and white crest of the ruling Emperor Karl Franz. The Reiksguard Knights standard displays the emblem of Karl Franz and their lance pennants are decorated with crowns. The motto ‘Mallus’ painted on his knights armour means ‘hammer’.

The infantry arm of the Reiksguard, The Reiksguard Regiment are the Emperors own troops and are the nearest thing the Empire has to a state army. They are armed with heavy swords and shields and wear ornate steel armour which they keep polished to a mirror finish.

The 1000 points will look something like this:

Heroes:
Captain of the Reiksguard. Full plate, Warhorse. (68)
w. Wyrmslayer Sword (15)

Core:
15 Swordsmen. Inc Std, Mus and Champion. (115)
15 Swordsmen. Inc Std, Mus and Champion. (115)
15 Swordsmen. Inc Std, Mus and Champion. (115)
5 Reiksguard Knights. Inc Std, and Champion. (157)
5 Reiksguard Knights. Inc Std, and Champion. (157)

Special:
10 Greatswords. Inc : Std, Mus and Champ. (130)
10 Greatswords. Inc : Std, Mus and Champ. (130)

Total: 1002

Two down. Just beasts of Chaos and Orcs and Goblins to settle on now.

@ EmperorNorton: I'm liking the Ogres already. Is it Tallarn Flesh, Ogryn Flesh and then highlights for the skin? That's how I'm planning on doing mine.

It is indeed, or going to be, rather. Simple, yet (IMO) effective.
I'll keep it simple with the Ogres, just basecoat, wash, highlight. Otherwise I wouldn't have a chance to get all this painting done, and I can revisit them later on should I feel the need.

Hello Everyone, having only joined the last tale halfway through, I'm a bit overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of people doing great stuff in this one.

I seem to have performed a grave miscalculation. I though the small number of High Elves I had would be enough for a Boy-sized force only, but after adding everything up in Army Builder in preparation for this post it appears it's, er, slightly larger.

Current count is at 2200 points. WITHOUT equipment. Only counting troops and mounts.

Here's the list. Luckily it's character heavy, or I'd be DOOMED.

Great Eagle (50 Pts)
Great Eagle (50 Pts)
Repeater Bolt Thrower (100 Pts)
Repeater Bolt Thrower (100 Pts)
16 Archers w/ FC (201 Pts)
24 Spearmen w/ FC (241 Pts)
Lion Chariot of Chrace (140 Pts)
10 Shadow Warriors (160 Pts)
BSB on Horse (122 Pts)
Prince on Dragon (520 Pts)
Mage (100 Pts)
Noble on Horse(97 Pts)
Noble (85 Pts)
13 White Lions of Chrace w/ FC (225 Pts)
Total Roster Cost: 2191

It's quite a haphazard force, and you can check out why in my monster log (see sig). Basically, it's an extension to a bought army. Here's some pictures of the army as it stands, and the WIP of one of my spearmen compared to one of the bought ones. It will be slightly annoying to follow the color scheme (I'm not a fan) but having a finished force MORE than makes up for it.

There's already quite a bit of interesting stuff showing up here. Good to see all this enthousiasm!

Alright, this is my current plan (which is quite likely to change a bit, but hey...):

Azhag the Slaughterer (not in pic)
Savage Orc Warboss on Wyvern (not in pic)
Black Orc Big Boss on Boar (Gorbad model)
Orc Big Boss on Ironback Boar (converted from warmachine warjacks)
Orc Big Boss (AoW model)
Orc Shaman on Boar
Savage Orc Big Boss in Chariot (probably on a beastmen chariot, idea stolen shamelessly from Lorcan)
Savage Orc Shaman on Boar (Wurzagg)
Savage Orc Shaman
Goblin Big Boss
Goblin Big Boss Battle Standard Bearer (Dragonrune model)
Forest Goblin Big Boss on Gigantic Spider
Forest Goblin Shaman (not in pic)

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh299/Braad-82/Warseer/Entry0-1.jpg

Those not in the pic, still need to be bought/released.

And now to write some fluff...

@Harry -can you change me to 1000 points of VC please mate?
Having failed to finish my Vc army in the last tale and not feeling much like painting at the mo I thought it might be prudent to continue on with the vamps as the scheme was going well. Plus it will give me around 2500 points in the end and I'm loathe to leave the army half done.
Anyway here is what I'm working on- still WIP- have to model the base and add the necro-

http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/silverstu_photos/corpsecart1.jpg

Will be adding snow over the blue corpses and the base will have hands bursting from the ground around the cart.

Lord Falmir strode down the steps of the ziggurat towards his retinue. With a curt nod to his captain, Falmir slipped the Lizard creatures idol into a saddlebag and mounted his cold one. Before he had a chance to reign in his mount a familiar voice sprang from the trees around him.
"I hope you weren't planning to keep that a secret from from the Covenant, my lord?" Falmir looked around and saw that damned sorceress Alenka standing beside a tall tree, where there had been nothing a moment before. The faint smile playing on her lips was undone by the fury in her eyes.
"Of course not, Alenka" Falmir retorted, "keeping any finds without sharing them with you would breach our deal. I was merely securing this token before the cold blooded ones returned and moved it". He gestured to the saddlebag "you can take it now if you wish". The sorceress crouched and ran her fingers though the fern growing at her feet. She turned to him and considered him for a moment through narrowed eyes, like a cat toying with its prey.
" No Falmir, I trust you. Not even you could be foolish enough to break a bargain with the covenant". As she stood her form dissolved into a billowing black cloud, one that disintegrated as it was taken by the chill breeze that suddenly blew in from the north.
Falmir shivered, slightly. It wouldn't do for his retinue to see him weak. They might get ideas. He turned to his captain and spoke to the impassive Druchii with a set face. "Tell me again captain, just how did we get into this?"

Hi everyone!

I've been sufficiently inspired by lurking over the last year or so, so I thought I'd sign up and get involved. I haven't posted before so here's my (Dark elf) army list:

Characters:
Alenka Supreme Sorceress, Dark Pegasus.
Falmir Hero (I haven't decided on his weapons yet)
CaptainBattle-standard bearer, Cold one.
Mira Sorceress

Core
10 Crossbowmen, shields.
10 Crossbowmen, shields.
5 Dark Riders, crossbows.
20 Corsairs, standard, musician and champion.
6 Harpies
Special
6 Shades, additional hand weapon.
5 Cold one Knights, standard, musician and champion.
14 Black Guard, standard, musician and champion.
Rare
2 Repeater Bolt Throwers.

This army represents an exiled Druchii household on a Lustrian expedition to fund enough support to return to their homes in the Land of Chill. Unfortunately, they had to make a deal with the Covenant of Sorceresses to get their support and now the Covenant is trying to take over the show. Typical bad guys fighting with each other!
I'll using a Lustrian paint scheme very much inspired by Mooglemen's Dark Elves log (but with more metallics as they're easier to paint).

Now I'm off to break open some paints!

Thalenchar

“They have returned!”
“Who have?”
“Death incarnate. The Knights of Morrslieb.”
“Then all is lost.”

Something is coming. The signs are there. Uncountable numbers of ravens have flocked together from all over the northern wastes to form a murder so vast that as it flies passed, it eclipses the midday sun for hours. Lightning storms of immense force have been seen to rage over the mountains to the northwest, inspiring the oldest of norsemen to tell tales of enormous dragon-man hybrids sleeping in caves under the mountains, and waking with the storm. Packs of wild hounds are fleeing south, braying and howling their story to any who will listen. Gangs of murderous ogres and ravenous trolls are roaming closer to the settlements of man than they have in decades, bellowing challenges in the night. Hideous spawn are crawling south, screeching loudly as they instinctively try to force human sounds through inhuman vocal tracts.
All the beasts of the north are telling of what is to come. The Order of the Moon is once again marching forth from their mighty citadel. Once more shall the Knights of Morrslieb cross into the lands of man, slaying all those who stand before them. Lord Thalenchar is again leading his warriors forth in the name of the Dark Gods. Man, Dwarf, Elf and Orc, the Order cares not whom it kills. The time of offering is at hand and whoever the Order comes across is offered this simple choice once:
“Join us or die.”
And it is thus that the Order of the Moon grows ever stronger, the number of foes joining them rather than face certain death helping Thalenchar’s warband to grow ever bigger, like an ever-waxing moon.

I have been playing Chaos Warriors as my main fantasy army ever since you were allowed to choose a character from the army list and then give him a retinue of (any kinds of troops) as long as it was worth at least the same number of points as the character. Anyone remember that? I loved it! Great system for chosing an army and very fluffy for a Chaos force. So I'm going to do it again.
I've been away from Fantasy, focussing mostly on 40K for the past 2 years orso, but I'm getting back into it now. And what better way than to rebuild my army of old, The Order of the Moon, and send them out into the world once more for the greater glory of the Chaos Gods!?
The plan is as follows:
I will paint up a squad (or two) of troops, then reward myself with a character the following month. These will then go together to form a character and his retinue. For instance, for the first few months I'll be painting up a unit of 8 Chaos Knights, together with a character on daemonic steed. I'm also planning on doing another unit of Knights and a character on Juggernaut, and a unit warriors with halberds accompanied by that Avatar of War Chaos character (if I remember to order it that is). After that, I'll decide what I fancy painting and go with that! Maybe a hellcannon, maybe a warshrine, maybe some ogres.... Who knows!

And, (almost as an aside, but not quite) since I think I'll have more opportunities to paint than I have to play, I will also paint up a small force of Dark Elves. This because a) they have some of the coolest models out there and b) I will be fulfilling a decade old promise to an old friend. When he and I went to out first ever GT, we promised each other we'd both do a DE army and use that next year. Well, some fair few GTs have since come and gone, but I'm willing to at the very least start painting up a small DE force just for the fun of it! This will purely be an army chosen with the old "oh this looks cool! I wannit!" theory of building an army. So no slick tactics or clever ploys. I just want stuff that looks good. That way I can at least look at my army as it get wiped of the table and go "yeah, but at least it looks great!".

I've produced a test model, but I'm not happy with it. The shield looks a bit rubbish and there's not enough contrast in the model. Any suggestions for either of these, or ideas to make the model a bit more interesting? Cheers!

the HE army I'm going to paint will be magic orientated.
The force will be led by a Loremaster of Hoeth (Archmage) accompanied
by quite a few units Swordmasters and of course spearmen.
Not sure how this amry holds up in battle. I've never relied on magic this much.
But it looks as an exiting thing to try...

In the end these guys will be small part of a 10.000 points High Elves army.
One of these days I will start a painting log on the process of that.

The models I have selected to paint:

- Archmage (level 4)

- Mage 1 (level 2)

- Mage 2 (level 2)

- 23 Swordmasters with full command

- 12 Swordmasters with full command

- 12 Swordmasters with full command

- 23 Spearmen with full command

- 23 Spearmen with full command

Now lets see if I can come up with a satisfying colour scheme...

Hello all. I'm doing Orcs and Goblins for this years tale and can hopefully get further than last time when I managed the grand total of zero submissions...

I'm going to be painting just over 2000 points and it's not going to be a legal list as I have already painted up most of my core units so I'm now painting everything else. I'm also going to attempt to paint a large amount in the first month as I have a tournement coming up, I'll stick to the 200pts a month in terms of posting stuff however and it should hopefully give me a bit of leeway for those Gaunt heavy months for my 40k tale army.

My submission for this month is going to be:

A fairly geared up Savage Orc Bigboss riding a chariot who comes in at a cool 202pts

Good luck everyone and I'll hopefully see you at the finish line!

I think this looks good! Should look cool as a unit - the command group will give you a chance to add some more colour, like the unit banner. I like the basing too. Will you be making movement trays?

Hi all,
Im going to do 2000pts Daemons and will probably start a plog to rant about everything happening around the army. Since I signed up without having a single miniature and a tight budget I will paint whatever I manage to buy before deadlines. Have been scavenging Ebay for a couple of weeks now though and have a decent collection to start with.
My purpose with this challenge is purely to have a goal with my painting. Since I don't play any games I'm just gonna paint an army and when finished sell it.
And therefore my list is probably not a competetive army but rather a collection of units I just want to paint.
Background and fluff around it will come in my plog (right now im changing ISP and can't access the net frequently) when it comes up.

The short story is:
The daemon prince Raas 'Kor is aiming to become the fifth god of chaos (the god of universal balance). Based on the crystal plains in the realm of chaos he gathers daemons and submits them to his cause.

The painting will reflect this by basing the minis with alot of crystals, using "his" symbol (a balancing scale with a black and white fire), using different colorschemes than 'standard' to show his and the plains affecting powers.

The list is roughly:
Damon Prince (wings, unnatural swiftness, magic lvl1) - 395pts
Herald of Slaanesh (banner of unholy victory) - 240pts
15 Bloodletters (full command) - 210pts
10 Bloodletters (full command) - 150pts
15 Daemonettes (full command) - 210 pts
6 Chaos Furies - 72pts
5 Flesh Hounds - 175pts
3 Bloodcrushers (Bloodreaper) - 230pts
3 Fiends Of Slaanesh - 165pts
5 Seekers Of Slaanesh (full command) - 150pts
Total: 1997pts

I have nothing primed as of yet, but the flesh hounds are almost ready and will be first out. Will see if I fill out to 200 with some daemonettes this month. Keep an eye out for my plog in a week or so if this sounds somewhat interresting:o

Man, we are getting some lovely submissions already! I will have to come back and comment (and actually do it this time:D)..

@Harry: Thanks! That recipe sounds exactly like what I was going for.

@Silverstu: It'd be great to have you back, even if only for 1000 pts. That has to be one of the most characterful VC armies I have ever seen, and we need more! Although, I am surprised you didn't do the wood as icicles. :D

@Braad: Loving that you are doing what I consider the best Shaman GW has made (the 'dancing' SO Shaman). I do have to say that I am jealous at the insane amount of 'characterful' characters you have there.

Cold, alone and wondering what that smell is? If not I'm confused :p

But yes centre-piece conversions are good. Just don't end up like me and my Gobbos and try and have more centre-pieces then normal units :p

I was thinking more along the lines of the 'helpful nudging' we (well, I, and others) were giving you ::cough::lionriders::cough cough:: ;)

As for the centerpiece casket of souls, I was trying to find the right size, but could only come up with the dimensions of 'two cubits and a half was the length of it, and a cubit and a half the breadth of it, and a cubit and a half the height of it'....seemed too big so I guess I will just copy GW's out of the book....:p

On a serious note, does anyone have a good recipe for 'corrosion'? I was thinking more along the lines of 'battery acid corrosion', but I may just have to settle for a good rust recipe (for my Nurgle Warriors).

I like the test model grey_area! Think it looks cool, and will look even better as a whole unit.

Ta, gui! I've changed the boots and gloves to the same colour as the cloak and done the leather handle of the axe in dark green. This looks a bit better I think. Still not 100% on the shields, but I'll see what the whole unit looks like and I can easily change the shields then if I still don't like them.

The Background/Theme:
I’m thinking you average sort of Warriors, using a dark pallet opposed to my very bright and colorful daemons. Honestly, I haven’t come up with a theme yet, so I’m looking forward to seeing the army develop and take on its theme.

The List:
Lord on Daemonic mount
Sorcerer
Exalted Champion
Exalted champion
5 Marauder Horsemen- Flails
5 Marauder Horsemen- Flails
15 Chaos Warriors- Shields, Full Command
20 Marauders- Shields, Light Armor, Full Command
5 Chaos Knights
8 Chaos Knights- Full Command
1 Chaos Chariot
3 Dragon Ogres

The Plan:
Well, I’m not to sure how to go about this. I’m painting my Knights first to get and idea on how this army is going to look. The second month I want to grind through a big unit and get start to get my core choices done. I guess everything is straight forward though. By month three I’ll have most of my core choices done. We’ll see how this works; this is my first painting blog of this kind.

Month 1 5 Chaos Knights
Month 2 10 Marauder Horsemen
Month 3 15 Chaos Warriors
Month 4 1 Chaos Chariot
Month 5 1 Exalted Champion, Wulfric the Wonderer
Month 6 1 Lord of chaos on Demonic Mount
Month 7 8 More Chaos Knights
Month 8 1 Chaos Sorcerer and another Exalted champion
Month 9 20 something Marauders
Month 10 3 Dragon Ogres

The Test Mini:
None

Work in Progress
Nothing yet.

Well a watched pot never boils. right? :p

The unit is nearing completion now, but it may take me an extra day or so more then I thought. I've got to perform surgery on several wolfriders who took a tumble to the floor when my mother opened my window while I was at work and let the curtains blow around in the wind :(.

On a serious note, does anyone have a good recipe for 'corrosion'? I was thinking more along the lines of 'battery acid corrosion', but I may just have to settle for a good rust recipe (for my Nurgle Warriors).

I've got a nice and simple (as in basecoat, wash, drybrush, wash, drybrush, drybrush, optional wash simple :p) tutorial for rusty weapons saved at home, but I'm at Uni at the moment so I'll send it to you later today. I'll have a look for something akin to battery acid corrosion while I'm at it.

Great work from everybody! It's great seeing the vets from last crusade still in the run. Unfortunately I couldn't keep up (think I got nine posts done though), but I'll do an honest try again.

I'm doing it with my steg right now, and it's a real pleassure. I finished the main bulk of the body yesterday bar some dipping, and I took some nice pictures of him... I love this model so much I kept thinking about more... at least one vanilla steg more, one regular rare ancient and possibly an engine. Don't know if they will all be in this years tale since I have quite a list:

3 sallies
24 spearsaurus
20 templeguard
Battlestandard
Carnosaur Oldblood

Then I'm going to buy...

Slann
BSB
2 x 5 COR
etc

Anyhow, I think it's time for you people to...

@ Matrim_Cauthon: Very nice Druchii. The dark rider could do with a coat of matt varnish though.

@ Astromarine: You missed the fun bit last time then. I think we had posts of comments from people that were as long as a full page in other threads :p. I don't mind the colour scheme on the bought section of your army, though it reminds me of the Japanese Rising Sun flags.

@ Braad: Quite the collection of characters you have there. Have you decided on whether or not you're going to shorten the snout on the Ironback Boar like we were discussing in the other TOFP thread?

@ silverstu: Like Harry, I'm so glad you decided to stick with the VC mate. Your's, Harry's and fluffystyff's VC armies are my favourite out there. All of you being fellow TOFPers has nothing to do with it I swear :p. The Corpse Cart is looking fantastic already, the corpse skin should look stunning on your snow bases.

@ Inquisitor Pariah: That's quite a nice bit of background you've got there. Looking forward to seeing your Druchii. Welcome aboard.

@ Grey_area: Switch the gloves/boots to Khemri Brown (or whatever the Khemri foundation paint is) and give them a wash of devlan mud, worked a treat on the Nurgle Chaos Warrior I did for a contest. As for the shield, try making the chaos star a different colour to the rest of the shield. A couple of Gryphonne Sepia washes should look pretty good (I've done it myself) or even repaint the symbol with either a gold or brass colour then hit it with the Sepia.

@ Orcbane: So I guess you are in the TOFP Men's League for the next five years then :p.

@ Ego Ninja: Very nice, how did you paint the cloth?

@ 75Hastings69: Great stuff. The teeth and eyes in particular jump out and grab my attention. It should look really good over the whole army. Glad to see Ruglud's Boyz making an appearance too

@ Leonathion: I think we're in for a battle of the outstanding Stegadon's between you and fluffystuff this year :D. I'm really liking the inverted colours on the horns (I know it is natural, just inverted compared to what you usually see on a model) and the pattern on the undersides. I just hope we don't see them copying your avatar ;)

@ D35t0y3r: I believe your double post makes it four comments in 3 minutes :p

@ Doi - The cloth was really simple, it was a basecoat of Dheneb stone, two washes of Gryphonne Sepia, followed by a layer of Dheneb stone, with a final highlight of a 50/50 mix of Bleached bone and Dheneb stone.

@ Leonathion, that Steg looks great, I especially like the way you did the underbelly of it, something that not many people (myself included) have given much thought to, but it makes a huge difference and yours is all the better for it. My only critisism is that you really should have taken 10 mins to fill some of the gaps in (e.g. by the side of the horn) as it detracts from an otherwise exceptional model IMO. Looking great so far though, I'm most looking forward to seeing how the LM armies in the tale progress more than any other.

I love him. The skin looks like my boyz(I.E NOT neon green like GW's). Ruglud's armoured orcs are great looking models. Are you going to use the rules for them?(say yes!)

Also, how did you get the picture to be small? Mine are always the whole page wide and it messes up the models.

@75hastings69: I love that orc. I'm a sucker for more subdued schemes, and yours is awesome.

@Doi: My main problem with it is fourfold: It's way too uniform, with white and red on the same places in all the units in the army, there's very little in terms of accessory colors (shoes are red as well, all horses are white, no leather, wood isn't distinctive enough), there's very little high elfy flavor (runes etc) and I dislike the way the metals are done. To fix that, in the portions of the army I'm gonna paint, I'm gonna keep the main theme of red as the "army color" but lay off the white on all special units, and add more leather, dark wood, etc as contrasting effects.

@Harry: It's a bit unclear from my last post, but can you switch my High Elf army to the Men category?

Thanks for your kind words, he's still WIP at the minute, I'll not be able to completely finish until I get home due to missing a couple of paints at work. For the purposes of the TOFP these guys will count as Arrer Boyz with Full Cmd, are there any rules out there for Rugluds Armoured Orcs? I remember them being on the old website.

conquest miniatures and I need all of the encouragement we can get, so I might as well get in on this too. I just started work on some 5e Bretonnians, so put me down for 100 pts. per month. I may do more than that each month, but I'd like to stick to that as a minimum. I'm going to work on roughly 500 point groups, the first of which consists of the following:

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e245/btmcrae/500PointsofBretonnians.jpg

After some thought, I've gone and replaced the plastic archers with the metal Squires on Foot(still counting them as basic Archers), and while I'm painting those 15 Men-at-Arms with halberds, I might as well do the remaining 5(not pictured) that I have for the unit too. I'll get an in progress shot of everything in the next few days.

As to other bits, I have a whole bunch of 5e Bretonnians primered and ready to go that I have never put any paint on, including, sadly, a unit of Men-at-Arms armed with only hand weapons, light armor, and shields(no longer a viable option in the current army book). :cries: I'll take a pic of them anyways, just because! :D

So, for month #1 it will be the Men-at-Arms with halberds.

After a few days of thought, I decided to ditch my planned 2000 VC army. I thought, why start a new army when I've got 2 unfinished armies which I would use more often anyways. Also I'm in the To40kP and painting 2 large armies already...

So with that said, I will be changing from 2000 of Vampire Counts to 1000 of Empire, and 1000 of Tomb Kings so as to better finish my current armies... Spose thats what the tale is all about after all. So if Harry could change my armies in the tale to Boys with Empire and Tomb Kings, that would be very much appreciated... Thanks in advance ;)

Ill hopefully post some WIP pics in the next few days...

Good day. I was about to post some pics here, but I decided to see what others have posted first and I must say, I'm likin' everything I've seen so far.

Anyway, I've got a start on my project!

The Background for this army is as follows: Six devoted followers of chaos from different regions are doin' what devoted followers of Chaos do, pillagin' makin' sacrifices, pleasing their gods, etc. Essentially trying to ascend the ladder of Daemonhood because they're awesome like that. Eventually, while each was on his own individual quest, they met each other. Realizing that they each had similar quests and could help each other, they decided to travel together, a roving warband of the strongest warriors, each worshipping a different god but united in their goal for destruction and greatness in the eyes of the gods. Since then they've formed deep friendships with each other and gained a few followers, but each remembers that the rest would slaughter him in an instant if the gods willed it.

I've got my list lying around somewhere, but I'm too lazy to go find it. Here it is, as far as I can remember:

Lords:
Lord Vyailt (Chaos Lord) Mok, Dragon + Other assorted equipment
Archduke Byarr (Daemon Prince) Mon, Level 4 Sorceror, 3rd Eye of Tzeench + Other assorted Gifts

Heroes
Mausel (Exalted Hero) Mok, Juggernaut + Other assorted items
Ledain (Exalted Hero) MoN, Palanquin, BSB, Festering Shroud, other items
Bemjann (Sorcerer) MoT, Level2, Disc, other stuff
Risaan (Sorcerer) MoS, Level2, Steed of Slaanesh, and of course other stuff that I can't remember at the mo'

Core
10 Marauders
10 Marauders
10 Warriors
10 Warriors

Special
Warshrine (I think)

...And here are the pics so far:

It's Mausel's Juggernaut. I still have to paint the trimmings and details and, of course, Mausel himself.

Always open to C&C:D

@Harry -

I haven't posted here in, uh, aeons, but I'd like to sign up. I'll be painting 2000-ish points (more like 2250 as it currently stands) of Slaaneshi Warriors of Chaos:

Sorcerer Lord
Sorcerer
Exalted Hero on Steed of Slaanesh
12 Chaos Warriors
20 Marauders
another 10 Marauders
3 units of 5 Warhounds
10 Marauder Horsemen
10 Chosen
5 Knights
Hellcannon

I'll update when I have a proper time scale worked out...

Discord
03-08-2009, 20:32
Here's my planned list:

Daemon Prince of Tzeentch, level 2 wizard, master of sorcery, unnatural swiftness, winged horror. 490
Herald of Tzeentch, chariot, power vortex, battle standard, banner of hellfire. 330
Herald of Tzeentch, chariot, power vortex. 205
Bluescribes 81
10x Horrors 120
10x Horrors 120
10x Horrors 120
5x Screamers 150
5x Flamers, champion 190
5x Flamers, champion 190
1996 points, 49 minis.

Yes, a bit character heavy. Can't get a much nicer list than that with only Tzeentch, since I don't want to invest in large horror units. It's not like I'd get them painted, anyhow. :p

And since no WIP pics means no fun, here's one of my first horrors. Already complained about my inability to paint blue on the 40k side. Bah. Well, maybe after this tale I'll be able to handle it a bit better.

Change of plans for me.
Regrettably, the Ogres are out for now.
Instead I'll do two Empire armies. I'm inclined to call them Middenheim and Middenland, although the difference between the two won't actually be visible.

Harry, please adjust the list accordingly.

@Harry: Thanks, I went with the cream and green since I wanted to avoid using the generic blue and red scheme and am quite happy with how its turning out.

@Hastings: Likin' the orc. Ruglud's Orcs, I think, have a lot more character than the Arrer Boy models. You do him justice!

@Shabbadoo: It's nice to see some of the old Brettonnian models, especially since they are actually pretty decent sculpts compared to modern ones. I'm eager to see 'em with paint on 'em.

@Leonathion: That thing is epic! Really catches the eyes.

@Inqisitor Pariah: Nice work, I especially like the skin.

@Dino: Interesting color scheme for the clothes. Nice job on sneakin' the Skull Pass dwarves in with the normal ones :D One bit of advice though: You may want to consider painting the beer in the tankards a different color from the tankards themselves. You're probably already on top of that though :p Seriously though, an entire Dwarf army painted like that would be nice.

@Sharke: Marvellous work, man. Keep it up! :p

@Discord: Nonsense! Your blue is fine. I would like to see more of it, though... one question: is there any reason you're using the old Horror models instead of the new ones? Is your entire army gonna be like that -- I imagine it'd be pretty expensive! Whatever you do, though, I look forward to it.

@Doi : Thanks man. For the bases I'm planning on doing a mix of rock, gravel, grass, snow, and dead bits.

I must say that all WIPs so far is looking great. The standard of painters here is quite high.

I'll stick to comment on those painting daemons like me since there are just too many participants.

@Discord
The blue will look great on the tabletop. And I like the older metal minis in most cases before the new plastics. They seem to have more character and in most cases are way better sculpted.

@ Harry. I know you are a batch painting genius but 5 armies in 12 months are you crazy man. I couldn't paint 5 armies in 12 years.

@ Discord: I don't see what you are complaining about with that blue, it looks fantastic. I think pupils in the eyes would look good too.

@Discord
The blue will look great on the tabletop. And I like the older metal minis in most cases before the new plastics. They seem to have more character and in most cases are way better sculpted.

Thanks for your comments about the blue. It seems to show my rough painting at bit more than the shades I'm used to, but hey, I'm trying to get an army done, not win a painting contest.

I thought about adding some black pupils to them, but I'm not sure. The old blue horrors are about the size of night gobbos, so they have these small, glowing eyes in real life. I'm afraid pupils will spoil the effect. 'Course, they look a bit empty in the large pic here.

And yeah, all my horrors will be the really old ones. Like Rhasget said, they have much more character in them. I somewhat dislike the latest metal daemon concepts, they took some really unique ideas and translated them into extremely generic 'angry beastman with axe', 'pretty lady with breasts' and 'chaotic blob of hands and tentacles'. While some of the sculpts are good (daemonettes were superb), none of them scream Warhammer to me. Now stringy bloodletters, weird hermaphrodites with crab claws and headless runts with two feet per leg and suction cup fingers... That's so gloriously weird. I love it. :D (And yeah, trying to hunt them gets a tad expensive. I managed to score a bargain by finding a bunch from a friend selling his old stash, but I still need some. Well, not for this tale, but if I want to expand later on.)

Only the screamers, converted prince and flamer champions will be current models, all the rest will be properly old stuff. Okay, the flamers will be the beaked ones and not the older versions, but still.

Right now I'm working on getting a dozen metal 5e Bretonnian archers cleaned, based, and primered, as well as 3 additional Grail Knights(I only ever got the Command ready to go) to have 6 of them ready for paint. I also just primered another 4 Foot Squires which I finally hunted down in small box of bitz. Here is a link to pics of what I have built and painted/WIP so far:

http://s40.photobucket.com/albums/e245/btmcrae/Bretonnians/

For 5e Bretonnians I have the following:

Lords & Heroes

Lord(mounted) w/lance(Lmtd. Ed. peacock comb helm Bretonnian lord)
Paladin(mounted) w/great sword
Paladin(mounted) w/flail
Paladin(or lord) w/lance on Pegasus
prophetess of the Lady(mounted)
Damsel of the Lady(on foot)
Paladin on foot w/flail
Paladin on foot w/warhammer
Paladin on foot w/sword

Core

20 Men-at Arms w/halberds & full command
20 Men-at Arms w/spears & full command
20 Men-at Arms w/hand weapons & full command(use them as pilgrims?)
14 Foot Squires(archers) w/full command
15 Archers(plastic, red and yellow) w/full command(metal)
15 Archers(plastic, blue & white) w/full command(metal)
15 Archers(metal) w/full command
11 KotR(plastic) w/full command(metal)
10 KotR(plastic) w/full command(metal)

Special Units

12 Questing Knights w/full command
10 Mounted Squires w/full command
10 Mounted Squires w/full command

Rare Units

10 Grail Knights w/full command

Special Characters

King Louen on Hippogriph
Bertrand the Brigand, Hugo le Petit and Gui le Gros
The Green Knight
Morgianna le Fay
Repanse de Lyonesse
Baron Odo d'Outremer and Suliman le Saracen
Tristan le Troubadour and Jules le Jongleur

Extras:

2 Archers(metal)
4 Musicians(2 drummers, 2 horn blowers)
2 Standards
4 Archers(plastic)

I may have a few other models and bits lurking...somewhere. Oddly enough I got rid of all of my 5e Knights Errant(can't recall why).

So, I still have a good amount of models to draw from for a 2,000 point army. My army list will of course be written up using the current Bretonnian army book and not the 5e one. I have enough extra models to make crew for a scratch built trebuchet(which I would build more in a 100 Years War style to suit the 5e models), though I also have a very old Bretonnian organ gun I could use in place of one. I also have a bunch of old Bretonnian knights but only a very few foot troops. I'd use them perhaps, but they are noticeably smaller in scale and wear very different styles of armor(still nice minis though). I also have a bunch of the current Bretonnians models(about 2 battle forces and few other metals), but I'd prefer not to use them if I can avoid it.

Well I've got a picture of all the dwarfs sitting, unpainted, in the trays. Not a very interesting picture, but I'll add it in once I get around to it.

Things to paint:

Converted dwarf lord on shield bearers
Battle of skull pass thane
Great weapon thane
Thane from character box
BSB from character box
White dwarf
Dragon slayer
OOP rune priest
Rune priest w/ great weapon
Rune preist w/ hand weapon

20 long beards w/ full command and great weapons
24 warriors w/ banner, musician
24 warriors w/ banner, musician
10 thunderers w/ shields
10 thunderers w/ shields
10 quarrellers
10 quarrellers
10 quarrellers

20 hammers w/ full command
2 bolt throwers
2 cannons
20 miners w/ full command
10 miners w/ banner
10 miners w/ banner

2 organ guns
Flame cannon
Gyrocopter

So pretty much everything I own rather than a 2K list.

I don't have a set plan for each month but I've started on the thunderers and have found my planned color scheme is working out ok, so that's a lot of stress off my back :)

Even though Harry doesn't seem to be fond of green Wood Elves, I've decided to paint mine with green/brown summer color theme. :) Not too imaginative, but quite fitting theme IMO. I want the army fits to my gaming table too, so I have to aim at quite standard colors.

I'll try to get at least these painted:

Lords and Ladies:
Spellweaver, 300p
Spellsinger, 140p
Noble, 158p
Noble, 156p

Core:
10 x Glade Guard, 120p
5 x Glade Riders, 120p
8 x Dryads, 96p

Special:
7 x Wardancers, 133p
6 x Wild Riders, 217p
3 x Treekin, 195p

Rare:
Treeman, 285p
5 x Waywatchers, 120p

Total 2040 pts, 49 model

If miracles happen I'll try to paint also a branchwraith, one more unit of dryads, additional treekin, great eagle etc. But right now I can't see that coming..

Though skip the pantsy pointy-eared&pinkish-with-green side, the other one is better...

@ harry
I'd like to sign up for this with 2000pts of Vampire Counts (well, 2250 as that's what we tend to play).

Theme
Since I like the model of Heinrich Kemmler so much, he's the theme for this list. As necromancer generals aren't around these days, he's going to masquerade as a vampire count rigged for casting with the obligatory Skull Staff. As I've got Kemmler, Krell gets in as a Wight king with the Black Axe of Krell. The rest of the theme is "things we could expect to find in and around a barrow/cairn".

Characters
Heinrich Kemmler (Vampire lord) 440pts
Krell (Wight King) 125pts
Necromancer 80pts
Necromancer, corpse cart 190pts

Core
20 Skeletons w/ spears, command, magic flag (probably the Banner of Endless Nightmare) 225pts
15 Skeletons, command 140pts
15 Skeletons, command 140pts
4 Bat Swarms 140pts

Special
20 Grave Guard, great weapons, banner of the barrows 335pts
4 Spirit Hosts 260pts

Rare
The Beast (Varghulf) 175pts

Total: 2250pts

The list isn't exactly finalised as yet, I may increase the size of the skeleton blocks and shift some stuff around. As such I've not noted the majority of magic items down. The Varghulf is actually going to be a Chimera that Kemmler "found" in a barrow as I have the model knocking around. Although the corpse cart doesn't quite fit with the theme, I'm taking the view that one of the necromancer lackeys uses it to claim corpses from some nearby villages.
I'll also be painting a bunch of zombies and extra skeletons. The test scheme for the skeletons is done already, so I'll post that when I find my camera and convince it to work. The first unit will be the skeleton warriors with spears.

Good luck to everyone!

Hello everyone!
No specific army list, but here is a roll of everything I have for my BoC:
Characters:
Doombull
Beastlord
Bray Shaman
Wargor
Core:
Herd w/ 9 Gor, 11 Ungor (full command)
Herd w/ 8 Gor, 12 Ungor (full command)
20 deep Bestigor Herd w/ full command
4 Tuskgor Chariots
10 Chaos Warhounds
Special:
5 Centigor
8 Minotaurs
4 converted Chaos Ogres
Rare:
Dragon Ogre Shaggoth
3 Dragon Ogres

I actually have quite the Beast horde waiting to get painted up, more than enough to choose from to make 1,000 points. As the new army book is on the distant horizon somewhere, I probably won't commit to much to a list just yet. I'm utilizing the TOFP to supplement my existing army rather than start a brand new one. I haven't completed many of them, but here are some pics that show the general scheme:
http://i30.tinypic.com/hvsdhl.jpg

http://i28.tinypic.com/4r9iki.jpg

Background/Theme:
I'm going for a Lovecraftian theme. Haven't fleshed it out extensively, but this herd is from the darkest depths of the Drakwald forest(:cheese:), and worships Shub-Niggurath/Sheol-Nugganoth, the Black Goat of the Woods as an aspect of Slaanesh.
I will have a few very subtle conversions here and there, and I'm using a handful of non-GW models for a unique appearance.
I haven't planned too far ahead, but the first three months should look like this:
Month 1: Beastherd, Minotaur
Month 2: Will most likely be a Joker. Leaving town for a while.
Month 3: Beastherd, Hounds

will report back if and when i've done something constructive!

Ah... I did actually sign up for this didn't I :o

Well, to be brutally honest I'm still not entirely sure what I'll be painting for this month... but oh well!

The plan is to try and expand the Bret army I started last year into something around 2000-2250, although that amount may not be possible just in this tale. I'm aiming to average about 150pts a month, as I think that 200pts as a student is beyond both my monetary and temporal budget....

I'll probably intend to add to the army something along the lines of:
Several archer units
A Lance of Questing knights
Some Grail Knights
A BSB
A Damsel
Paladin on foot maybe
A Trebuchet
And maybe some Pegasus knights

The scheme for the army will be this:
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x29/Arhalien/Brettonians/MAfreehand.jpg

More pictures can be found here (http://s185.photobucket.com/albums/x29/Arhalien/Brettonians/)

Anyway: I've just read through this entire thread, and I am really excited about the tale, if only as a spectator: the painting and converting I've seen displayed so far has been incredible, with some armies I'm really looking forward to seeing a lot more of:
-Elazar's Chaos: I love that colour scheme, and I like those dragon ogres
-Avian's Chaos: one of my favourite armies from last year, and that conversion is just incredible
-Dax: 'nuff said I feel :)
-Fluffystuff: YAY HE'S BACK!!!
-Nephilim, that base is truly incredible: if you can recreate that for the whole of your army, it will look stunning
-Stonetroll: Erm... wow!
-McMullet: Warren Street
-Dark Apostle: Really looking forward to seeing more of your conversions: the stuff I saw in your log was superb: is any of that coming into this tale?
-Stu: YAY!
-Hastings: As above, only moreso as it's been so long since I've seen anything you've painted
-Leonathion: Good to see you're back this year: looking forward to seeing more great painting from you (that Stegadon is brilliant!)
-Dino: Looking as good as ever: good luck with getting those armies finished :)
-Voiceofthewarp: Those gobbos are looking truly awesome: I look forward to seeing a possible Golden Daemon winner at some point this year ;)

And last but not least:
Harry: You're mad: completely and utterly insane, and I look forward to seeing whatever brilliance that madness turns out this year :D

For those I haven't commented on: it's not to say that your work is any less worthy of notice, but I get the feeling that I may give up the ghost if I try to write any more this early in the morning...

Ok here we go.

The War Host of Itchi-ni

There’s no real back ground or story just have a bunch of Lizardmen I want to get painted. I don’t think I am gonna do many conversions. I have a few ideas but not sure if I’ll implement them in this Tale or wait and try them on the next one. One conversion I’ve done is that I have magnetized my Steg so I can switch out all the different variations.

The List
Characters
Slann (350)
Scar Vet (96)
Scar Vet (114)
Skink Chief on Steg (290)

Core
23 Saurus Warriors (306)
Skinks w/ Krox (110)
Skinks w/ Krox (110)
Jungle Swarm (135)

Special
Terradon Riders (90)
Temple Guard (355)

Rare
Salamander Hunting Pack (75)

Total 2031 pts

The Plan
1. Terradon Riders and Salamander Pack (165)
2. Scar Vet and Skinks w/ Krox (206)
3. Scar Vet and Skinks w/ Krox (224)
4. Slann (350)
5. 10 Temple Guard (195)
6. 10 Temple Guard (160)
7. 13 Saurus Warriors (186)
8. 10 Saurus Warriors Jungle Swarms (255)
9-10. Skink chief w/ Steg (290)

It doesn’t work out to be 200 points a month but it gets the whole army done in 10 months.

Test model
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y160/Fechik/Lizardmen-005.jpg:

Also some models in my plog (Link in Sig)

WIP
I have undercoated the Terradon Riders and Salamander Pack for this month.

Just want to say good luck to everyone and I can’t wait to see everyone’s armies being painted.

I have done just that.

I think the Empire thread has worked out great between them they have almost every province of the Empire covered. If anyone drops out they will be letting the others down. The fact is the tighter you can get with a group of people and the more shared the endeavor the more chance their is of sticking with it. Hopefully it will work for the Greenskin painters too. The more support the better.

I hope to see you and all the other Orc and Goblin painters there.

(Your stuff is great by the way. Very inspirational).

And here come the Dogs of War. I've been hard at work since just before August. My wallet was aching, but a nice big package was sitting on my chair one day when I came home. So most of last week was spent cleaning up the Marksmen of Miragliano, and then undercoating them as well as my Paymaster and a Mercenary Captain on foot.

Saturday and Sunday I took the time to paint up one of the Marksmen, very happy with how he has turned out. It was really enjoyable to paint this guy up, and can't wait until I have a full unit of them to display (Currently in the process of painting another 5 of them).

Good luck everybody! I can't believe how many people are involved in this. At last, some motivation to turn cheap looking and ugly plastic into something to be proud of ;-)

The Background/Theme:

At the moment I'm lucky enough to be involved in a narrative campaign with my Ghoul King army. We're play testing the rules designed by the award winning games designer Joe Prince (writer of Contenders) and so far it's working brilliantly. As a result, I have my armies background background already written:

Who is my pretender? The Ghoul Prince, The Scourge of Morr, The Beast that Sings, King of Strigos, Under-Thrall to the Covenant of Blood, Konrad Waldenhoff

What are his origins? An ancient vampire, descended to the extinct realm of Strigany extinguished in the Vampire Wars. Feral yet clinging to the society he creates and craves in deprived mock courts and balls, graced by perfumed ghouls and zombies in rotting dresses. Slowly driven mad with anger and jealousy his chance for success and the creation of a new Strigany has fallen into his lap. With the vampires united and led by the Nameless One, the Covenent of Blood now marches its undead hordes into the heart of the Empire. Already Stirland has been crushed: resistance reduced to a handful of crazed priests and grief-stricken peasants. Konrad's feral horde has so far swept what little resistance it has faced into the chill wind. Minor victories have brought him neither praise nor displeasure from the court of the Nameless One. But Konrad desires more...

What does he look like? Nosferatu in full-plate armour

What is his faith? His own narcissitic vision of splendour.

How has he become a warlord? As the most powerful vampire in the region known as Hunger Wood, Konrad has been forced into war against the Empire as an Under-Thrall to the Nameless One.

What is his ambition? To betray, scheme. bribe, murder, double-cross and grovel his way to become the Covenent of Blood itself. Set himself up as the undying ruler of a living Empire and live in opulence and pleasure for the rest of eternity. With Belach the Armoured Fist slain by an a huge orc Warlord during a recent Waaagh from the Mountains of Mist (now repelled), Konrad sees his chance to worm his way up the heirarchy of the Covenent of Blood. Soon he will meet the Nameless One. Soon he will drink the blood of a thousand generations of vampires... This plan (unknown to the self-deluded and half-insane Konrad) is extremely unlikely to succeed.

Konrad's Connection:The trust of the Council of Blood.

Konrad's ultimate aim is to worm his way to the top with the guile and cunning of a pupper master. By strengthening the weak and ruining the strong, without taking credit or blame for either, Konrad is biding his time to strike. He hopes to discredit and murder the able whilst sowing the seeds of revolution in minds of the easily impressed. Soon he will engineer a mutiny within the council. The Nameless One's corpse will be cast aside and when the weakling Under-Thralls squabble for dominace, the Ghoul King will be ready...

Konrad's ultimate fear is that he will be banished from the Council of Blood. Once on its fringes he will suffer the fate of all rogue vampires: to be hunted by his former brethren until torn to pieces by the hungry fangs of the immortal dead, or forced to live like a beast in dank caves and bear-holes, raking up the corpses of lepars and paupers from the unmarked graves of the forgotten. Deprived of his favourite luxuries: the flesh of virgins on silver platters served by cowering and fawning servants he will forget the macabre music of the Corpse Ball that complements the chitter and dancing of his moonlit domain.

The List:

A ghoul horde comprising of about 100 ghouls, 2 vargulfs and 6 giant bats and accompanying characters.
There are many conversions in the list including a vargulf made from a spawn, vampire bats made from heresy flying vampires, ghoul bits from gamesworkshop mixed with heresy, battle standard made from chaos knight parts etc...

The Test Mini:
I'm still converting and assembling so no finished painted miniatures yet. However, once I've figured out how to use my camera properly and how to upload photos, then I'll show some of the conversions.

Work in Progress
As above :-)

The Plan:
To paint up either a character, a vargulf or a unit of 20 ghouls per month. Somewhere amongst it all I'll fit in the bats (hours of conversion but worth only 60pts a unit :( )

I pledge (as a man AND MAKING IT CLEAR THAT THIS IS MY FIRST POST DONT MISS ME PLEASE <3) my skaven road crew, serving under Janus the Digmaster Chieftain.

The very basic list is (everythign on my shelf) and its 2000 points without wargear.

Chieftain
Warlock engineer

120 Clanrats
100 Slaves (BFSP goblin 'union members')
30 stormvermin

2 warpfire
2 ratling guns

5 jezzails
40 plaguemonks

Warp-lightning cannon.
Rat-Giant

My work so far this week has been assembly and simple conversion of the first 30 slaves. I have cut off spears and trimmed down to pointy sticks, added some spear blades to the bow armed goblins. Also trimmed off the quivers, and a daunting number of coats of yellow paint (a la safety vests).

UPDATE - I have always been most impressed by the vast networks of tunnels the skaven have... my first white dwarf showed a map of the surface world vs a map of skaven tunnels. I think this was the release time of the newest army book (with ratling guns) and oh WOW i was impressed.

I like to think of my warlord clan as the road boys, tunnelers, diggers, demolitions and traffic management system. Blowing up hills, stop/go signs, safety vests, road markings and even traffic lights will be a part of this army. Tossing up between swampy bases or black asphelt atm.

Also trimmed out the parts for 30 clanrats *wipes away sweat*. Focussing on tiny crap for any length of time is not so easy as it may seem.

Hi there!

This is Alistair posting for the first time and I want to join in with the painting... pretty please.

Not ever played WH-Fantasy before but I'm making a start now.

I will be collecting Daemons of Chaos made up of Khorne/Tzeench daemons which will end up being at least 2000 points. Heavy on the Khorne side.

I plan on using them in 40k as well, so small based models will be mounted on magnitised bases and the attached to metal movment trays while being used for Fantasy.

I havn't figured out what will be best for large based models but i'll cross that bridge when i come to it :D

So for my first month I'll begin with 2 boxes of Bloodletters which I'll make a start on as soon as i get some more batteries for my camera.

Next month will probably be a Herald of Khorne on a Juggernaut.

One month I will get a Bloodthirster and convert it with the Balrog's head and maybe its wings or some Dragon wings. Anyways hopefully it will all go well.

So sign me up please.

I think I am just about there with lists for my other armies.

I have a nice little starter for Beasts of Chaos:

Characters
Wargor (64+)
Army Battle Standard Bearer (85+)
Bray-Shaman w bray staff (81+)

Core
Beast Herd 10 Gors, with shields Inc Std and Mus (85)
Beast Herd 10 Gors with shields Inc: Foerender. (90)
Beast Herd 20 Ungors with shields (100)
Bestigor herd 19 Bestigor (108)
Bestigor herd 6 Bestigor including Std, Musician, Gouge-horn. (100)

Special
6 Centigors (149)
3 Minotaurs with great weapons(138)

Total: 1000

Additional hand weapons on gors, and no shields on either gor or ungors is seen as the standard choice. I'd only keep the shields if those are the models you have, and probably remove them from most ungors anyway.

Good luck everyone, and remember to update your regular painting logs as well. :)

First: Well done, all of you busy people! But stop reading this stuff and continue working! :p

Second.. thanks to the nice words on my deserty Lizards, they were inspired by my own little gecko's, who probably are proud of them being strong soldiers. Or so I hope.

Third: I'm working on 5 Cold One Riders (the old ones (haha), those riding the so called 'cows'). With full command they're well over de 200 required points, and they probably leave me with some spare time for next month's stuff, which would be.. err.. well, I don't really now yet. The champion is mostly done now, and after that the others will be pretty easy, once the colours are chosen etc.

Really, there already is quite a bit of exceptionally nice stuff in here. Keep it up!

Hey lizzie people! We're the most numerous after the empire dudes, is anybody interested in getting a lizzie support thread? Maybe in the fantasy section (getting kinda crowded in the general)?

BTW- thanks for all the comment on the steg, I'll answer when I have the time to spare!

gabby johnson is RIGHT! our own lizzie thread would be just what we need!
sorry, been watching way too much blazing saddles lately.
i love the idea of going off on our own.. the only thing is.. that means when i get on with pictures, i have my log, the general log, a lizard log, and if i dwarf one gets made.. that too.. anyone want to start a dwarf one as well? i've got two to contribute

I think it is a good idea, Especially for the armies with big groups of painters.

But I would keep them all in General plogs. We are a bit more out of the way here.

It is why the original Tales were kept here even when we split. To ovoid upsetting the locals with all the Tale related threads.

Plus it means the rest of us can find you easily and check in on you.

I've written a bit of concept-fluff. I'll be working on this a lot more, so this is far from final, but I guess this will be the direction I'm heading to. It will be a lot bigger, at least.

I've also started on a scenario to go with this, but that still needs a lot of work...

Armylist: (including a few names this time)
Ragnor Thunderfist (Azhag rules)
Savage Orc Warboss Brog’ka on Wyvern
Black Orc Big Boss on Boar
Orc Big Boss on Ironback Boar
Orc Big Boss
Orc Shaman on Boar
Savage Orc Big Boss on Chariot
Savage Orc Shaman on Boar
Savage Orc Shaman
Goblin Big Boss
Goblin Big Boss BSB
Forest Goblin Big Boss on Gigantic Spider, Nobzag
Forest Goblin Shaman Razgob

WAAAGH! Lustria – Ambush at Fern Valley

The Boyz were tired. 11 days of marching from the coast took its toll on their stamina. Though the coastal village of Empire humans was easily sacked, and provisions were aplenty, the warm and humid jungles were not the best conditions for a forced march. On request of his trusted Boss Brog’ka, he decided to let the camp be set up a few hours earlier, and allow for a bit of fungus beer, fresh roasted meat and some ‘eadbutting contests. While everything started out nice and quiet, things soon turned into one big brawl, as the frustrations of seeing only trees for days erupted in a huge squabble. Not being one of the most subtle Warlords, Ragnor jumped in the fray and started cracking some skulls. It didn’t even take that long to restore order.
While assigning duties to the bosses to keep the boyz working until party time, he called for his chiefs and shamans, and pointed up the hillside to a rocky outcrop. “All ya lads up there in half an hour. We’re gonna discuss some tactics.” He called for his loyal wyvern and circled a bit around camp, and then headed for the outcrop. It didn’t take long before the others arrived there. Ragnor ordered Razgob to start a fire to give some light in the already darkening late-afternoon, and started explaining ‘Da Plan’.
“Alright, listen up. I’m gonna explain this only once. According to the Bat ladz, the Temple city is only one day full march ahead. When we get there we will probably only have little time to set up our attack, so I want everyone to understand what they are supposed to do. Brog’ka, you take da Boar boyz and chariots via the plains on the west side, and take your Shamans with you. Nobzag, I want you and your spiders coming out of the densest forest on the Eastern side. I come down the Scrublands on the North with da mass of boyz, and…”
His eyes focused on the forest edge up on the hill. Something stirred the scrubs. Before he could yell an order, a bunch of giant kroxigors rose out of hiding and started charging in, yelling an alien cry. Right after, more and more lizard-like creatures started to appear from the forest, and some even flying above the canopies.
“AMBUSH!” Ragnor shouted. While ordering his chieftains to mount their creatures and pull their swords, he sent Nobzag back to the camp to call for reinforcements. It took only second before the Lizardmen forces charged in.

Harry sorry to change my mind (again) but i've been looking at the old skaven models and nothing jumps out at me, so i'm going to struggle to do 200pts / mth until i get the new stuff.

So can i change from

200pts Lizards
200pts Skaven

to

200pts Lizards
100pts Skaven
100pts Empire

The lizards on the other hand are going very very well indeed ;)

15 savage orc arrer boyz (core)

205

total
1998

total models: 56 • Total characters: 4 • Total points Magic items: 50 • 3 core • 2 specials • 1 rare

I have undercoated 5000 points of savage orcs and tinkered with the lists. That is 2 2000 points armies and an addition to bring the total up to 5000 points.

This army is magic heavy (11 powerdice and 7 dispeldice). It has only 56 models in total, which is unusual for an orc 'n goblin horde. Allthough I like horde armies, with this one I wanted something different. I can imagine savage orcs rely on magic more than normal orcs.

The other savage orc army has 81 models and has a warboss on wvern. I will try to paint this army together with the other one. Allthough my focus will be on the army for the TOFP, I will post updates on the other army in my own plog.

I did some testmodels over the last couple of months, and am finally satisfied with the colorscheme. I found a style for their warpaint, that is both fast to do and looks good to me. It's all white circles like aboriginal dots.

I converted the giants of Albion, one for each army. Their slender limbs really enhance the Indian/Aboriginal/Zulu vibe I'd like to have for the savages. All shamans have green lightning effects on their staffs, resembling them casting spells. I allready did two of those and am fond of the way they stand out. Savage orcs standing next to them may also spot some green glow of the shaman casting spells.

Still not satisfied with the bases, it's just rock now and a few dried bushes. I bought 3 packs of skulls from Games Workshop to get that primitive cannibal look. I will try these on the bases.

Inspiration for the savages will be the cannibals from the openingsscene of King Kong, aboriginals, oriental fantasy like old Sinbad movies and african tribes.

I also have an idea for the displaybase, but will tell more about that when I'm going to start that.

I will post the testmodels sometimes soon.

Good painting everyone!

Well, it looks like I have my first two months planned out. This month I'll be painting the Chosen, and in September I'll do the Warhounds. (This is mostly because the Chosen are one of the only fully-built units I have on hand, and partly because I can cunningly fiddle my points allowances to paint 305 points this month and 90 next month.)

Also, it's test mini time!

Hi!
I´m warflag. Time to check in with my dwarfs from the wyrmrock.

I chose a dragonhunter/killer theme. Mainly for the colours blue and red. I love the classics and I have a good number of them in the pipe for this tale. My army sums up to 3000 p, but I signed up for 2000 p only, to keep it safe, since I also paint in the TO40KP.

The army consists of warriors, thunderers some longbeards and ironbreakers, a number of warmachines and charcters. That´ll keep me busy and the painting interesting.

An overview of what´s to come:

The scheme for the warriors:

And the rest of the unit WIP:

This will be my first entry, clocking in at 185 p.

It is nice to see how many of us already have posted in this thread. Looks like the enthusiasm is spreading wildly!
Hopefully we can keep it up to the end.

More stuff from me in my log, for those interested. It´s the bottom right in my sig ;)

Cheers all

Hello All, here goes Grollg's Waagh...

The Theme:

An orc and (common) Goblin mixed force, boyz heavy.
Roughly, Grollg and his boyz were part of a bigger waaggh, got distracted
sacking a brewery, someone added mushrooms to the skavenpish the dwarfs
were drinking and Grollg's waagh was born. (Heading straight for the next brewery)
No major conversions planned, but the plans only go for 2 months...

The List(subject to whimsical change):

Characters
Grollg
Orc Warboss

Orc Boss (BSB)
Orc shaman
Goblin shaman

Core
30* Boyz, shields, full cmd

30* Boyz, shields, full cmd

4 * snotling bases

Special
8 * boar boyz, full cmd

1 * boar chariot

2 * spear chukka

1 * rock lobber

Rare
3 * trolls

2 * pump wagon

The plan:

This month is Grollg's ladz, 30 * boyz, next month will be 2 trolls and ten wolf riders, then I have to buy stuff.

The WIP:
A snapshot, Grollg's Ladz with test model (except the shield, the freehand failed , need to come up with a suitable icon/image)

I've finally worked out how to get my camera to take reasonable photos. Attached are WIP of the flying ghouls which will count as Fell Bats in my army. And of course, the mandatory photo of my workspace ;)

My plan is to paint the flying ghouls up this month as well as a Vargulf. They've been converted from the excellent flying vampie Heresy miniature. Basically I clipped the wings, heads and legs off and reposed them. I had to resculpt alot of muscle for the anatomy to make sense (this is my first time using green stuff as anything other than an aid to superglue) but I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Hope you like them...

@ Stormcrow; I think that blackguard of your's is absolutely spectacular. I can't wait to see more. You have pulled of 'shades of black' very well.

@Hastings; Your Orc shaman is looking great already. Okay its only a staff, but What a staff!

@Voiceofthewarp; you’re always showing of, what’s your deal anyway?!? Don’t mind me, I’m just jealous of your brush mastery. =p

@ Everyone else: A lot of great looking stuff so far. Really looking forward to everyone’s 1st proper entries.

HARRY, SIGN ME IN!!!

I had to drop out of the first one because of a car accident that ruined my wrist (fully recovered now), hope I have better luck this time!

I'm going to paint 2.000 points worth of WoC, 200 points per month. I have a few old chaos warriors miniatures, and I will gather a Nurgle army with a few conversions, but I will add some other stuff like Khorne Chaos Ogres. Not too sure about the list yet, I'll start painting what I have and take it from there. I'm working on my lord already!

Stuff I have:

12 Warriors (the first unit of plastic warriors (only 12, will have to add a metal champ and a unit filler to rank them as a unit of 15).
5 Knights (not the new ones, the previous ones)
1 metal Spawn
1 Lord of Nurgle on demonic steed.
1 very old chaos sorceror (the one with the fly head)
2 sets of BoC, Mordheim and other bits and pieces that I think I can turn into 2 chariots...
A whole load of stuff to try and build a war altar...
1 even older chaos soreceror mini that I'll convert into a Tzeentch soreceror on disc.
2 units of 6 hounds.

Stuff I'll be buying:

4 Ironguts (painted as Chaos Ogres)
20 Flagellants (to be converted into Nurgle Marauders)
and more...

Things going great so far. 10 thunderers already done and a cannon on the go.

Harry, can I sign up for dwarfs twice? So I do 400 points a month and ending with a 4000 point army?

Edit: And a question on points: Obviously in my 2000 point list I have items, but I seem to recall that from past tales that items don't count towards the points painted . Is this correct? (So painting a dwarf lord counts as 145)

nice! thunderers are my next month's chore for dwarfs.

i also just found out that the label our band is with wants us to have a new album out for late february early march.. which means tourning in support of the album before school is out.. they let me know that it's at least 25 headlining shows in our strongest markets.. or 6 weeks away from home.. this tale is going to get hairy for me around then.. but i'm gonna give it a go!
sorry for the random info.. everytime something like this comes up, i just think "man, thats gonna slow the paint train!"

I was allowed to do double Empire, so you should be okay with 4000 points of Dwarfs.
And as far as I know it's up to you whether you want to count the points for items or not. I guess most people try not to count those points so that they get more stuff painted.

Wow, so many posts! Firstly thanks for all the kind comments on my WoC minis!

I've commented on everyone who's posted pics already. Well at least I hope I have. If I've missed anyone I'm very sorry but there's a brainbursting number of posts on here and I wanted to comment on as many as I could!

Nephilim of Sin: Awesome bases for the Horsemen, like the scene they make ranked up.

Emperor Norton: The flesh on those ogres looks nice so far!

Dax: Awesome Giant. Love the clever use of bits (in particular trhe chaos steed 'rump' for the Pauldron!) Colour scheme looks promising too.

Dino: Like the varied look on the Horsemen's steeds and Dwarfs look great too.

Fluffystuff: I've alraedy commented in your plog but those awesome stegs deserve a mention here!

Stonetroll: Beautiful Brets! Those shields look gorgeous too!

McMullet: The dark elf cold ones look brilliant with the Saurus Warriors. Looking forward to seeing them painted. Should be great judging by your other lizzie stuff there!

Jahorin: I quite like the darked look on those skellies, gives them a slightly different look than the norm.

Deusmex: Brilliant waywatcher. Nice and dark, I've always preferred the more 'sinister' colour schemes on wood elves.

Zujara: Your damsel is looking pretty. Really like the hair. Love the colours on the Tomb Kings also.

Giledan: That's a very original look for the chaos warrior and that armour trim looks brilliant.

Badgeraddict: Nice High Elves. The grey and blue scheme looks nice and as you say more like an army in the field.

Edalho: I really like the dark tones on those skinks. They look evil which is great!

D35toy3r: Your gobbos look great, looking forward to seeing them progress through the tale.

Rhys60: Can't wait to see a home made Trebuchet!

Hairypig: Nice scheme with the green for the High Elves. And I like the dirty looking Skele-bones!

Dark Apostle: Awesome conversion for an arch-lector!

Matrim_Cauthon: Love that shield. How'd you get that colour effect as if it's glowing hot almost?

Arduhn: Looking at how much you have to paint there I'm grateful WoC are a fairly small army!

Astromarine: Looks like a nice army. Interested to see the colours getting filled in across the tale!

Braad: Lots of characters to paint. You'll be in for a year of heavy concentration I reckon!

Silverstu: Corpse cart looks great so far!

Thalenchar: Looking forward to seeing the troops to go with the fluff!

Grey_Area: Looks suitably rusty for the Warrior. I agree you need some colour on the shield to bring some contrast. How about some brass or gold? Maybe a paler brown on the capes could work also?

Ego Ninja: Those crewmen look great!

Rhasget: Great choice of Avatar! :D

75hastings69: That's a gorgeous orc. Love the green you've achieved. Rugluds guys are awesome minis.
EDIT: Shaman WIP looks great!

Leonathion: The belly on that Stegadon is pure win! Brilliant painting.

Inquisitor Pariah: Ylara has chosen an interesting outfit for war in the jungle. Great flesh painting though!

Sharke: Nice jugger. Like the muscle colour on the legs etc.

Orclave: Nice elves. The swordsman's gem looks really well done in particular.

Discord: I love the contrast of the blue with the glowing yellow eyes.

Voice of the warp: Stunning gobbos. Love the glowing blue on the Shaman. Giant's flesh is stunningly smooth as well.

8bitMummies: Promising Beastmen. Looking forward to seeing your army.

Stormcrow: Beautiful black Black Guard!

Arhalien: Nice scheme on the Men at Arms. Excited to see your Brets through the year.

Dwarfhold13: Slayers look great so far. You look to have a busy year ahead judging by the army pics!

Fechik: Stunning red skinks!

Someone2040: Looks good, like the shading on the green.

Kingreidos: Interesting background. Looking forward to seeing these guys.
EDIT: The flying ghouls are awesome.

Verminmistress: Purple on gold on the chosen looks great.

Warflag: Great dwarfs! Really like the blue.

As for me. Here's a quick WIP of the Hellcannon I'm doing for this month. The two Hellcannons I do are going to be quite different. Not least because I'm going to have to build the wheels for the second myself. I want this one to have a more organic scheme and go for a more machine like scheme for the next one.

Very early WIP, still have a LOT to do with this. Need to get the base made as well!

Good luck to everyone. Looking forward to the end of the month to see the finished products for this first month of the tale! :D

Count items or not, whatever you like. I count them, as otherwise it would be sheer impossible for me to paint that much, but other, faster painters don't count and paint more. Just what you're up to.

2 dwarf armies? Fine with me :)
Though it would be best if you theme them both, so that I can differentiate easily which entry belongs to which army. Or just consistently name them "dwarfs 1" and "dwarfs 2"...

Great, ok I'll double up on dwarfs then. I don't want to make them different themes though (they still are just the same army) but I'll make sure to say Dwarfs 1/2.

I've also gone through and seen I don't need to count items (although I guess I could if in a pinch), so here is my break down:

5 thunderers w/ shields (75/75)
5 thunderers w/ shields (75/150)
cannon (90/240)

5 Iron breakers 65 3937
5 Iron breakers 65 4002
5 Iron breakers 65 4067

Sorry the formatting screwed up when I pasted it. Basically each line represents a painting day with the first number being the point total and the second being a running total.

The only models I don't own are those last iron breakers, and seeing as how I'm maxed out (and more) for special those might become more longbeards.

Hopefully I don't get burned out...

I love seeing how different folks tackle this project. Some all planned out to the day others not a clue where to start. :D

Double Dwarves is fine. Knock yourself out. :D

I will do an update of the first post on day next week when I have more time.

Just banged out my first 10 men for my Empire Reiksguard army today.
Had a bash at the Warmaster. Stone me those are some tiny little @#$%*7!+$
Have nearly completed building my whole Night goblin army for the tale and most of the Beatsmen.

@Elazar, I picked the thing with the highest possible model count for my first month so that it would seem easier as time went by. As I'm doing a knight heavy Empire army, it should even out in the end to be a fairly well-rounded army in terms of points/model.

you have any of the globadier (sp?) models? i've always liked those.. i'll also put a vote in for plague monks.. or whatever they are.. the greenish cloaked rats
good luck with that.. i've got 2 more coats before my first unit of slayers is done.. taken WAY longer than expected

oh and harry... sent you a PM about those models

Go with slaves and clanrats first. It's safest to try not to save any bigger units till the end.

Dino
08-08-2009, 14:43
I have a suggestion Harry. Paint the unit that costs the least first. That way the unit with the most points you have to paint that month will be out of the way and you can focus on the units and characters that cost more. Make sense?

Ok so I have my first testmodel finished. It's a bit sloppy as I noticed early on that priming it white was a big misstake. Im in the process of priming one black and try out the same scheme, I think it will look a lot better and save me lots of hassle with the white dots, oh how I hate them.

Anyway, before we get to the model I would like the help of you people to pick a list. Im a bit torn betweem two of them tbh.

List 1:

Glamourweave Spellweaver on Unicorn
Branchwraith x 3
Dryads x 8
Dryads x 8
Dryads x 8
Treekin x 4
Treekin x 4
Wild Riders x 6
Wild Riders x 6

List 2:

Treeman Ancient
Glamourweave Spellsinger on Unicorn
Branchwraith x 2
Dryads x 8
Dryads x 8
Dryads x 8
Treekin x 4
Treekin x 4
Wild Riders x 6

List 3:

Glamourweave Spellweaver on Unicorn
Branchwraith x 3
Dryads x 8
Dryads x 8
Dryads x 8
Treekin x 4
Wild Riders x 6
Wild Riders x 6
Treeman

Any help here would be awesome.

On to the testmodel. Microart Studio bases, some clump foilage, between experimenting with washes and drybrushing as well as my true love and only practice: layering. Mixed feeling about the model but I think I might be on the right track.

Ok i'll sign up with my Dark Elves. Aim to do a 1000pts but hope for more if i have time.

Army: Dark Elves.
Theme: Corsair heavy with lots of appropriate conversions for other units.
Army list: Umm.... havent got one sorted at the mo due to me simply choosing stuff that i like the look of.

Not so much a test piece, simply a corsair captain i made ages ago but only painted yesterday.

I'm painting a battle of five armies box and at least 2500 points of undead warmaster so far (though I'm likely to add a warmaster ancients army to the total).

I'm going to split the five armies stuff into the following batches

Wargs
Warg Riders
1/2 the goblins
The other half of the goblins
Elves
Dwarves
Men
Beorn + Eagles

The undead I'm doing the following for the first two months

Month 1 - 2 units of Skeleton Cavalry, Bone Giant, 2 Command units
Month 2 - 4 units of archers

I've already finished 4 units of wargs (240 points) and I'm close to finishing my 1st month of undead. I've cleaned off and undercoated the archers and five armies dwarves for next month, so it is all going quite well.

Picture below is of my undead contingent, which needs detailing and then varnishing, and which clocks in at 405 points.

Six Repeater Crossbowmen with shields & Guardmaster (71)

246 Points(heavy on points but not on model numbers)

Month 3
Two Reaper Bolt Throwers

200 points

Month 4

Twelve Dark Elf Warriors with Shield and full command(99)

Five Harpies(55)

154 Points

Month 5

Five Cold one Knights with |Full command, Banner of Murder and Pearl of Infinite Bleakness

225 Points

Month 6

Lathor, Captain of the Guard. Master with Battle Standard, Heavy Armour, Shield, Sea Dragon Cloak, Lance and Pendant of Khaelesh on Dark Steed(166)

Five Harpies(55)

221 Points

Months 7-9

Lord Inor Bloodmoon. Dreadlord on Black Dragon with Shield, Sea Dragon Cloak, Lance, Armour of Eternal Servitude, Ring of Hotek, Potion of Strength

Month 10

All of that brings my lists to 1966 points. If I keep going with the tale, I will finish my month ten to twelve with more stuff, I hope to add eight more crossbowmen and eight more spearelves, making the units 10x2 and 20x1 respectively.

Can't even choose what Skaven I want to paint.
The dead ones! Filthy rat men, first killing off my precious Lizards, then sacking Miragliano where my Mercs are from!
But in all honesty, I agree with what others have been saying. I think it's a good idea to paint the cheaper units first (As long as it fits with your schedule). I know I pretty much faltered with my Empire in the last tale when it came to the smaller guys, as it was just so little points for so many figures.

As for me, things go well for the Mercenaries on the war front. The Marksmen of Miragliano are really shaping up, and are very nice and enjoyable figures to paint. I'm on track for this month, the 5 I'm currently painting just require Crossbows, Hair, Hands and bits and bobs in their sacks to be painted. This week is the next 5, and then the last 2 weeks of August will be focusing on my Paymaster and Maximillian Damark.
In fact, if anything things are running swimmingly well as I'm well into my Asarnil the Dragonlord conversion. He could be seeing some paint quite soon.

Uhm, I don't want to be rude, but I believe there is a seperate tale going for LOTR-stuff...

Though you can always ask Harry what he thinks, ofcourse.

@ voiceofthewarps
You can always decide later to add an army, or upgrade to men's league if you're up to it. You always got 2 jokers to catch up for two months.

Great looking work everyone. Keep it up!!

@Elazar The Glorified: Cheers for commenting on everything. Might try that as well if I find the time. The shield icon was painted Scab Red, then highlighted with Blood Red (everywhere but the deepest recesses). Then the curves were highlighted with 50% Fiery Orange / 50% Blood Red, and then a final highlight of pure Fiery Orange. Teeth painted in Golden Yellow, as well as a very thin watered down line on the body of the dragon itself). Quite a bit of work for a simple shield, but I just did 25 of them at the same and I really think it works.

Wow is this busy!
@Hastings- that shaman looks amazing already- really like the more somber skin tones and the staff is fantastic- the lighting effect works brilliantly.

@dwarfhold13- that lizzie looks great- a whole regiment will be quite something- how are you going to base them? Swampy perhaps?

@voiceofthewarp- great to see you in the ToP- those gobbos look great- looking forward to seeing more..

@arhalien- good to see you've finally turned up.. :)

@Doi- looking forward to seeing those ogres- I'm afraid i had to give on the last ToP as a bad job- glad you finished it though.

@deathcat147- very nice corsair- looking forward to an army painted to that standard.

@Ben- those warmaster models look good but you could do with trying to get better light for the photos to show them off to their best advantage[mind you my photos aren't the best either!]

As a general question did we come to any decision with regards to commenting? By faction? what about just commenting on the previous page worth of posts[obviously in addition to anyone else you want to comment on]. It's getting big already!

I thought Harry liked my D6 idea so much he decided on that :p.

Provided everyone rolls their dice it should make commenting more interesting for those who wont comment on everyone (as you wont be commenting on the same people/armies each month).

Factions could work too if we group some of the smaller groups together.

I'm sure Harry will set it in stone when the first submissions roll around at least.

I loved the rolling the D6 idea.

Each month when you post the army just say at the end of your entry what number you rolled ....
....then comment on everyone who gets the same number as you.

This way you will be trying to comment on approx 30 painters. Not 180!
This number will reduce as folks drop out.

More importantly you will be commenting ona random selection of painters each month.

Does not stop you commneting on anyone else who's work moves you. Does not stop you commneting on everyone painting the same army as you if you want.

I see a number of support groups have formd so 'factions' seem to be sorting themselves out.

Hey ho!

Since I have a lot of bare plastic and metal models adorning my desk for too long now, can you sign me up for 2000 points of Lizardmen? (feels the regret already :p).

I don't have a theme except they will be purple (please no Barney jokes :eyebrows:). I will mostly be using Foundation Paints, washes and batch painting to get things done fast and efficiently (a concept I am not too familiar with :p)

Things I have so far:

Chakax
Skink Priests / Chiefs (from spare Stegadon plastics)
24 Saurus Warriors
24 Skinks
10 Temple Guard
10 Cold One Riders
Engine of The Gods
Stegadon

That probably doesn't add up to 2000 points so I'll have to go and purchase more after I've got the ball rolling.

Excellent progress everyone so far!

Anyway, good to have you in, Mr Feral, and all the other new guys.

Also, while standing in a local shop this afternoon, looking at some models, I had some nice ideas, and the conversion-plan for a savage orc warboss on wyvern suddenly formed in my mind :)
I guess that makes my plan for 2 wyverns definite, since Azhag is so much confirmed now that I don't expect it not to be released anymore.

When Azhag comes out, I'll also be buying the rest of the bits I need.
