Hello everybody! This time is nigh... the Tale of 40K Painters, 2009/10 season is under way!

If you're signed up, this is the place to be.

If you're not... why not? ;) There's plenty of time to join in if you need some help getting motivated to paint. If you want to join in, just post in this thread and let us know what you're going to paint and how much of it there is!

For those already enlisted...

Please use this thread to say, "Hi," to introduce yourself and your army (-ies) and post WiP pictures of what you have in store for us this month. Feel free to try and plan out what you're going to do over the next 12 months, though that's not obligatory.

In one month the first submission thread will be posted; until then, please hold back on posting your completed work. Save it for the start of September. :)

And questions, feel free to ask. :) Best of luck with this first month's work and with the rest of the year!

For those interested in joining...

As I say above, just post here and say so. There's plenty of time to join in (2-3 months at least).

What can I paint?

Any tournament-sized force for Warhammer 40K, Epic or BFG. So for 40K that's 1000+ (as high as you like, with Apocalypse), Epic is 3-5K and BFG 1500-2500 (none of these limits are strict of course).

Then what?

Once you've chosen your force, you paint one tenth of that every month. So, if you choose a 2000 point army you paint 200 points per month.

Waitaminute, if I paint 200 points a month for 12 months, that makes 2400 points, doesn't it?

Right! We all have real lives as well as playing games. There are exams, new babies, holidays and all manner of things that might stop us painting toy soldiers for a month. For this reason, you get 2 "Jokers": Rather than painting something, you just "play a joker" instead.

Harry has also posted a couple of good FAQs in the Fantasy tale thread, which are equally applicable here. I will shamelessly steal and repost them here (references to "200 points a month" simply mean a tenth of your army, so if you paint 1500 points altogether that means 150 a month):

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Cheers for reading all that, I look forward to hearing from you!

Sam (McMullet)

I guess I'll be the first to post. :)

Hey up, I'm Mr Feral and I'll be painting 2000 points of Chaos Space Marines. These are a mix of Alpha Legion (already started but lots still that I want to do) and Red Corsairs (recently started).

So you have an idea of how my stuff looks, have some pictures of near-finished Red Corsairs:

http://i396.photobucket.com/albums/pp41/Mister_Feral/Alpha%20Legion/RedCorsairtestmodelscheme2.jpg

I'm going for an old-school vibe with these guys. More of this lot and my Alpha Legion for now can been seen in my log (below in my signature).

Looking forward to seeing what everyone else is going to be doing,
Feral

Well I'll start myself then and this is what I am first working on. A Deathwing Ven Dread (ish...would you count it as a venerable dread?) at 175pts. I've only really just started so it is in early stages atm. Once this weekend is over then I will put more into it.

http://i344.photobucket.com/albums/p334/MistaGav/IMG_0167.jpg

Also for this month I will attempt to paint these bases, one for the dread and five for some terminators already painted. I'm going for an urban/ruin look.

Hello everyone.

My name is actually Harry (it didn't occur to me to make something up when I signed on. :D)

I shall be painting Tyranids.

I have not done the Tale of 40K Painters since the first year when I started all this and even then I had to drop out because I couldn't keep up with all the Fantasy armies I was trying to paint. Fantasy is my first love and TBH I don't play that much 40K but I do love the mini's. I figure I might play a bit more if I completed an army. :D

So this is my starting point. I have collected this little lot from various places at various times:
(Note: the painted ones are not my painting. I have not made a start on any painting yet. I am still building these).

http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/2245/img6247.jpg

I have now got the book and knocked up a list.
I have just tried to pick unit sizes of about 100 points (My target for each month) so if the list looks a little odd that is why.
(Together with my complete ignorance of all things tactical :D).

Hey everybody,

After the succesful To40KP last year and my being able to paint up more than 2000 points in less than a year, I was thinking about painting up 1000 points of Eldar and 1000 points of Space Wolves. If this works out better than expected I can still up the points that I'll be doing.

OK, first things first: I already painted up a testmodel for my space wolves a while ago (after learning that they would be the next codex to be released).

And without further ado, here he is:

Guess it's my turn to introduce my plans. The short version would be to simply say: Guardsmen and loads of them. And support, dont forget the support.

My IG army will be a classic foot army with tanks and artillery for support. Most of the stuff will be converted with greatcoats and gasmasks for the infantry. Will post a picture of one of the test figures later.

Due to that it will be both boring and time consuming to convert 40 guardsmen a month I aim at painting one infantry squad and something else each month.

This month I've cheated a bit. I already have a infantry squad and half a company command squad converted so all I have to do is paint it :D Might throw in a sentinel or something to correct this.

Better sketch out my plans.

Project: Mantis Warriors

Originally I was just going to do up a squad of terminators for a Space hulk campaign that we are planning on runnning. A friend is casting up hulk tiles in hard plaster using Hirst Arts molds.

Trialing a colour scheme on a test marine I realised that doing an arm of these guys would look really effective, be distinct and more importantly, give me an excuse to restart 40K and buy more models! That, and the guys at Bell of Lost Souls have been putting together a Badab War mini codex at just the same time that my gaming group decided to play a Badab War 40k campaign!

So that's were I am. Got a lot of models lying around that I can whip into squads and start gathering pace for this project.

I have some parts ordered from FW to do up some marines in MK4 with a ven dread on its way also (note with 2 assault cannon arms - stupid fat fingers!)

So if anyone is looking for a MK4 dread ass cannon arm in exchange for anything useful, please let me know, otherwise I will be forced to buy another FW dread to mount the arm on!

So 2k Mantis Warriors, here I come!

2000 points of Ulthwe.

I was sooooo gung ho to be dong this army. Then I found my Salamanders which has taken a bit of the edge off. But I still like the idea of doing it and my Sallies dont b=need that much work so it shouldnt intrude on my New Eldar.

This month I already got off to a flyer due to some time off work this week so Im gonna be doing a Wraithlord to finish my points total for this month.

Meet Elmer.

Hi gang!

I've just finished last years Tale of Painters with a 2000 point army of Deathskull Orks, but I need some more! My army consists of Wave 1 and AoBR stuff, so for this Tale of Painters I'll be adding Wave 2 stuff and any other new stuff that they bring out over the next year.

I'm gonna start off by adding some of the new Nobz to my AoBR ones, to give me a full mob of 10. They will be equipped as follows:
4 Nobz w/'Eavy Armour and Big Choppa, 1 Dok w/Cybork Body = 175 Points

I'm going to paint the Ammo Runt too, but save it to be used for a potential Flash Gitz mob later on...

A few of us started up 'support threads' last year for particular factions, so we might as well keep them running this year too. Check out the To40kP - Orks WiP thread (http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2830047#post2830047) in my sig for some inspiration from last year's Tale of Painters.

Hi guys, Just poped over here to say i'm doing a 1000 points of Space wolves. I unfortunetly have no models yet but will have them for either August or definetly September.

'elo,

as stated i would like to paint 1500 points of salamanders.
until now i only have 585 point coz i only bought the black reach box 2 weeks ago.
so i will have to buy a couple minis throughout the next 12 month.

i have started testing with 2 minis but the color sheme was a bit too dark and made them look more like dark angels!:<

to give you an impression on how my work will look like, i post a picture of the test color sheme marines:
http://geekery.de/beide_marines.jpg

i will brush them with a bit of scorpian green and put some thraka green wash and bedab black wash.
i hope that will help to fit the "common" salamander colors!;)

definitly i will buy "vulkan he'stan" in the next days and some tacticals squads and maybe 1 or 2 devastor squads, but that will depend on my luck with ebay!:P
maybe i will enlarge my points during the tale, but let's have a look first how things are going.

Great test models everyone, loving Badgobbla's Space Wolf.

I've signed up for 2000 points of Imperial Guard goodness. I'm one of those players whose been playing for quite some time now and yet hasn't finished painting a complete army. For me this will be quite an achievement, I'm hoping for an Honorifica Mundanus for this.

My aim is to have the army painted to tabletop standard by next summer. My painting skills aren't great but please feel free to comment. My first few months will primarily be infantry based to get the buggers out of the way. If the time gets tight I may let basing slip but I'll pick up the slack in a tank month. I am planning on leaving squad designation until the final leg though as I'm not sure at this stage how I want to do it.

Without further ado, my test model:

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn217/LuckyDaveBrown/SL271398.jpg

The lighting's not great but hopefully you can see what I'm aiming for. The fatigues are knarloc green with a badab black wash and the armour is catachan green with a badab black wash.

When the bell tolls the first deadline expect to see three of the following:

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn217/LuckyDaveBrown/SL271400.jpg

Good luck everyone and, once again, thank you McMullet for organising this.

Hi everyone, I'm give_me_a_d and I am a nutter.

Why am I a nutter? Well I've signed up for 3 armies! Looking at McMullet's fanstastic facts and figures I see there are only 2 of us doing 3 armies and 1 (clearly sectionable) doing 4.

So what are the 3 armies and how am I going about them? Firstly I will be continuing my Daemons I did last year with a further 1000pts, which will bring them up to 3k.

Secondly I will be updating and extending my Craftworld Eldar army. I'm doing 1000pts of them, made up of some models that I painted ages ago, which will be updated (I'll claim half points for these) and various other bits to give me legal/good sized units. I've started a support thread for us Eldar on the path of the painter (see my sig).

Finally I'll be doing 1000pts of Orks. There is no good explaination for why, but in true orky fashion I'm not letting that stop me.

If I manage to finish that lot I think I will be doing quite well.

darthham
31-07-2009, 16:14
OK well i will be doing orks

I will be doing a compleatly bike mounted list for orks at around 2k hopefully

the army list will be

warboss power claw warbike attack squig 145
wazdakka gutsmek 180

10 nobs nob bikers painboy 3 power claws 3 big choppas 1 kombie rokkit 1 kombie skorcha waaaagh! banner 590
10 nobs nob bikers painboy 3 power claws 3 big choppas 1 kombie rokkit 1 kombie skorcha waaaagh! banner 590
12 warbikers nob power claw boss pole 340
12 warbikers nob power claw boss pole 340

now thas about 100 points over 2k

so the plan will hopfully be
6 warbikers
6 warbikers
6 warbikers
6 warbikers (get the boring stuff done first )
5 nob bikers
5 nob bikers
warboss on bike
5 nob bikers
5 nob bikers
wazdakka gutsmek

so hopfully i can paint with 2 month left over for anything extra i want in it e.g. a stompa

sorry to anyone who was looking forward to seeing me paint 180 identical orks but i realy want to try an all bike force

But I am only doing 1000 points of each.
So that is only technically two and a half armies.
So thats not totally bonkers. :D

31-07-2009, 17:53
I'm trying to do three armies as well, but only one is in this Tale.
My main problem here is that I know diddly-squat about 40K, having never played (yet having collected two sizeable armies...), so if my list is total codswallop, please let me know.
Here's a WIP shot of my first Battle Sisters troop:
http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k395/EmperorNorton668/DSC01534.jpg
The first three months should each see a unit of 10 Sisters from me.
After that I'm not sure which direction the army will take. Either it's Penitent Engines, Repentias and Arco-Flaggelants, or Seraphim and vehicles (which I dread to paint).

Right, hi all.

I'm down for 1000pts of Imperial guard, Ideally though I hope to excede that by the end of 12 months.

So to start me off this month I plan to complete my first Infantry unit + either a priest or Commissar. So without further ado, I present the completed test figure for the 41st Cadian infantry.

I'll post up the army list later but essentialy, I need to complete a squad a month to finish 1000pts in time.

As for me, I gave some old minis a soak in paint remover and have been furiously scrubbing them clean today. Now all that's left is to build and paint them. *sigh*

Anyway, here's my plan:

Lord of Change, Breath of Chaos, Instrument of Chaos 285
3x Flamers 105
3x Flamers 105
3x Flamers 105
8x Horrors, Bolt of Tzeentch 146
8x Horrors, Bolt of Tzeentch 146
8x Horrors, Bolt of Tzeentch 146
8x Horrors, Changeling 141
Soulgrinder, phlegm 160
Soulgrinder, phlegm 160

That's 1499 points, with 44 minis total. Gives me four sizey troops and ten killpoints for gaming. Hopefully it'll win without stuff from other gods. Mixed god lists aren't for me.

Thanks to Fredmans, I'm also considering an Epic army on top, I think I'll paint my first month's Fantasy/40k stuff first and see how much time I have left. Will decide then, luckily it's allowed to sign up a bit later.

Here's a WIP shot of my first Battle Sisters troop:

Oh my. Excellent, excellent colour scheme choice. Of course, I may be a little biased, since the one sister (I was supposed to make an entire army, honest!) I painted three years ago has the same armour/robe colours. Now I don't have to finish mine to know how they'd look as an army. ;)

Hey Folks,

Just posting up my initial ramble.
So I'll be doing 1500pts of Chaos Marines (possibly more), they'll be a undivided possible nurglish vibe to them, more in the vein of battle damaged, corroded and worn, than stinky bloaty messy folks (got plenty of those already)

I haven't decided on which unit i'll be doing first, or a final army list, but the List will be mostly large Chaos Marine squads, Havoc Squads and Raptors, with some possessed.

If I get my finger out, there may be a Chaos Android Squad as count as thousand sons, but that's if I'm feeling particuarly productive.

The Schemes either going to be a greyish or brownish with rust and orange contrasts. It very well may be both mixed amongst the force. No test model yet, but should be able to get a test model or two up over the weekend.

Here's a couple of random pictures of assembled guys I can plunder.

I shall probably update a more sketched out list and first unit for the table at the end of the weekend too.

Hi everyone. I am ReaperOfSouls, some of you might remember me from my very short appearance in the last years tale where I think I managed to complete one whole months submission before falling out because of jokers. Well, I'm back and I am planning to last a little bit longer this year.

I am going to continue working on my 'nids just like last year, only this year i will only be painting 100 points a month to enable me to paint up my Skavens for the fantasy tale, with there being a new codex for them soon and everything. The general plan is to paint some of the more pricey nids to make it easier to keep up. So expect to see some carnifexes, stealers, raveners etc. from me during the year. For this first month I am painting 10 hormagaunts, and work has already started so I might be able to put up some WIP's this weekend if everything turns out well. Meanwhile, here is a little teaser of my color scheme in the form of two zoanthropes I painted last year. More pics can be seen in my log.

Good luck everyone, and keep that paint flowing!

Hello all,
BoyMilla here!

First time doing a tale so looking forward to it very much! I'll be doing 1500 points of Eldar, in Iyanden colours.

Month 1, I plan to paint 10 Dire Avengers. Here's a very WIP shot of a test mini I've started.

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL92/9374494/17143183/370848442.jpg
That'll be the first 152 pts! Not going for anything too special with these, I love the eavy metal scheme so will stick quite closely to that!

Next month I think I'll be doing my Farseer, as I know I'll have a busy RL month.
After that in no particular order I have 2 x 10 man squads of Guardians, 2 x 5 man squads of wraithguard with warlocks, a wraithlord, a falcon.
That's the models I have atm, but they'll keep my tale going for a few months.
I want to add a couple of wave serpents and some dark reapers further on down the line.

All the best to everyone else participating!

Thanks to Fredmans, I'm also considering an Epic army on top, I think I'll paint my first month's Fantasy/40k stuff first and see how much time I have left. Will decide then, luckily it's allowed to sign up a bit later.

You are most welcome. Feel free to hate me come spring :D But you know you will thank me next August.

Anyway, I am Fredmans, and I plan to build/paint two Epic armies for this year's tale. They are chosen to compliment each other (in the way of cat and mouse, dog and cat etc); an Inquisition Grey Knight Task Force and a Chaos Cultist uprising with daemonic tendencies, and therefore I also intend to build my forces around a story, and let them grow as the story demands (and my miniatures' stock allow).

Following the sudden loss of a remote star system, a nearby Inquisitor and his private forces is sent there to make an investigation, learns the daemonic truth behind the events, and call for immediate help from the Ordo Malleus before the Chaos incursion can spread further.

The Inquisition forces will therefore consist of said Inquisitor with private forces, and a Grey Knights relief force led by a Grand Master/Inquisitor Lord.

The event itself: Starting as a local rebellion on one planet, the devious plans of an Aspiring Champion soon sees the entire solar system in turmoil and battle. The attention of the Chaos Gods is drawn to the system. Plagues and inexplicable mutations spread throughout the system. Daemons are drawn to the battle from the Void, and Daemonic Engines enter the fray through unholy rituals. The Champion of Chaos is rewarded with Daemon Prince-hood, as he leads his growing army from planet to planet, preparing to make the space jump to nearby systems and spread the glory of Chaos.

My Chaos Cultist army will obviously contain lots of daemons and as many daemonic engines as I can cram into it (why else would there be a demand for Grey Knights). Other than that, Epic Cultist armies consist of marked covens, mainly made up of cultists in various degrees of mutation. Daemons are temporarily summoned to aid the covens from a common Daemon Pool.

No WIP:s yet, since I currently try to finish this year's tale with the two last entries, for Epic Tyranids and Imperial Guards respectively. Feel free to check them out later (when they are finished), in the final submission thread. It is also very likely that my first entry will be a small Grey Knights detachment, and a Joker for the Cultists.

/Fredmans

Edit: By the way, feel free to comment on all the current painters efforts. They all deserve some praise.

Also, I am thrilled by the number of Specialist Games entries this tale. I cannot wait for the first submission thread.

Greetings everyone! I'm Jim Reaper, and I'll be painting 2000 points' worth of Adeptus Mechanicus for Battlefleet Gothic. I haven't done a BFG fleet for many years, and I hopefully planning to do a bit more than the drybrushing plus details approach that I used for my other fleet. The plan is to use much the same colour scheme as the Ad Mech vessels on the GW website, with the red and black areas swapped around.

Having said that, my test mini is, as you may note, drybrushed. It's only an escort though, and thus I feel I can let myself off :p Also the gold isn't quite finished, I'm waiting on a mail order to get me some supplies there.

http://images.fotopic.net/yzpsvo.jpg

The list will be:

1 Retribution-class Battleship
2 Lunar-class Cruisers
2 Dictator-class Cruisers
2 Endeavour-class Light Cruisers
3 Gladius-class Frigates
3 Nova-class Frigates

My first month's painting will be one of the Dictators.

Greetings all, I am the sectionable nutter doing four armies.

I have a backlog of 5k+ points to get through (525pts a month), and I'm going to spend the next year attacking it. I have my established Ultrahawks Space Marines army, recently founded Cadian IG Regiment, and elements of the Imperial Navy and Adeptus Mechanicus for support.

My first project of the tale is a Marauder Destroyer for the Imperial Navy. Current state of play:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/rcgothic/LGIM0004.jpg
As a 505pt unit, it should get me most of the way to my first monthly total.

I'll be posting my progress in my log, there's a link in my signature.

Wow, I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far. Oh, hi, I'm Sharke :D I was wondering if I could join your project here with 1k of Orks. It's my first 40k army and, truth be told, I've already got a fair bit done but I've lately been lacking the motivation to finish completely. So yeah, just wanted to see if it's not too late to sign up :)

Greetings, gentlemen.

This year, I will be doing another detachment for one of my IG armies plus some Witch Hunter allies. Truth to be told, I have to get some additional models painted that have been gathering dust for far too long.

For the first month, I will start off with a unit of Squat Mercenaries counting as hardened veterans and probably a Command Squad. With commissions, I have really a lot to paint this month plus I'm moving house so i'm looking forward to a busy month of painting.

Everything people posted in here so far looks promising. I'm especially keen on seeing how the Marauder turns out and of course I'm keen to see how Badgobbla's armies are developing. Last year's Blood Angels have been great and judging from the SW test mini, you'll live up to the expectations. Misterboff, good to see you around again with your Orks. Looks like Sheena Easton is around again too and warflag also continues with his Orks. Now i feel kinda bad for going traitor on the To40kP Ork dudes. ;)

Anyhow, happy painting to all of you!

Hey folks, Irondog here. Any of you that frequent the Who Loves Orks (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33080) thread will probably know me, but I'm a bit of a lurker when it comes to the rest of Warseer. My Ork army is pretty respectable already (over 3K and counting, including a scratchbuilt Stompa (http://www.irondogstudios.com/images/tater/mek_tater.html)) and I seem to have no trouble finding inspiration to work on Da Boyz. As for some of my other projects... well, let's just say I need a bit of kick in the ass. :D

I've been wanting to paint a Crimson Fists army for some time. I've been into 40k since the bygone days of Rogue Trader, and to me, the Crimson Fists are the epitome of what it is to be a Space Marine. I want to do a Rynn's World storyline campaign at some point in the future, complete with photographic battle reports. Since nobody in my local area plays Crimson Fists, it looks like the task falls to me to get the army together.

So there you have it. The reason I'm turning 'traitor' and not painting Orks for the To40KP is the simple fact that Da Boyz need somebody to beat on :D

Here's a shot of my first tactical squad all assembled and ready to go. I'll be building and painting a unit at a time for this. Painting can get a bit tedious, but I love building and converting. I'm using the building aspect as incentive to keep me motivated. I don't get to build another unit until the current one is finished.

http://www.irondogstudios.com/images/crimsonfists/tac1_01.jpg

Between my 'carrot on a stick' incentive program, my two buddies who have also signed up, and the threat of internet shame should I lapse, I'm hoping to stay on track. Best of luck to everyone. Let's get painting!

Loving what I see so far, this tale I will be painting a Witch Hunter force led by an Inquisitor with several Sister units and some Inducted Guard as well as a mixed Daemon force. So far I have been playing with the white on my Sisters, haven't quite gotten it yet but here's what I have so far, any advice would be appreciated to get it really look great:

Righto - basilbrush here.

I'm going to try me hand at getting a Epic marine army (well 3000pts) painted. This is not really going to be a tourney ready army but one for club games. So no titans chewing up points here. I'm not fully happy with the list so far so it might chop and change as we go. (The eventual goal is to finish a full ultramarine chapter worth of stuff)

anyways here the list
Tac (+ commander) 350
Tac 300
Tac 300
Assault (+ commander) 225
Assault 175
Assault 175
Dev (+ 4 razorbacks) 350
Terminators (with landraiders) 725
Scouts 150
Landspeeder (all tornadoes) 250
Total = 3000

This month i'll tackle a tac unit.

Those look great. An army painted like that would look fantastic. Hope you stick with it this year ... that is something I would like to see.

I have just looked at McMullet's list. It appears there are only 8 of us painting Tyranids. (7 40K and 1 Painting Epic)
Geep, Kiwichild, nkicik, Razormasticator, ReaperOfSouls and Silverstu. and Mephiston on Epic Tyranids
I propose we try to look out for each others posts and make a special effort to support each other so that we all complete this Tale.

Hey everyone,

OK first things first let me start off by saying good luck to everyone, I look forward to seeing all your shiny new (and old) models and I hope we can all stick it through to the end.

Quick bio:
Started playing in high school 9 years ago (Crimson Fists,) sold the army when I graduated and started playing Tyranids for a bit before I boxed them up, gave most of them away and fell away from the hobby.
Started painting again last year with a pre heresy world eaters colors daemon prince for a painting contest. Picked up a bunch of CSM stuff and I was back in officially. Got into the Grey Knights somewhere along the line to showcase my painting skills and also got a bunch of free/really cheap SM stuff. So I have a load of models to paint, a relatively busy schedule with college and video games as an easy distraction.

State of the Armies:

Chaos Space Marines: I've been running a small 500 point force of regular marines and thousand sons with mixed results. I set out on the path of chaos to get at least one squad of every cult marine so I've got lots to do. The regular dudes are painted in my interpretation of the Fallen colorscheme. Early on we should see lots of berzerkers and later on I hope to do some Plague marine conversions from the standard CSM sprues.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2611/3777283290_cc92e87f33_o.jpg

Painted:
8 thousand sons
8 CSM
1 Chaos Lord (Power armor)
1 Daemon Prince

Unpainted:
24 Berzerkers
8 thousand sons and 2 sorcerers
1 defiler
1 rhino
1 Chaos Lord (Terminator Armor)

Grey Knights:
I really enjoyed reading Daemonhammer and the rest of the fluff for Grey Knights and the tactical challenge of a super elite force enticed me. I paint these guys as well as I can and spend time detailing each model. In my opinion my best model yet has come out of this army: My converted Terminator Chaplain representing my Grand Master. Along with him I have only painted one 5man squad of GK and a 5man squad of stormtroopers. The stormtroopers rhino is basecoated so it's nearly finished. Here you go:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2540/3777285120_e0439eecc7_b.jpg

Yup, that's two land raiders. I got a crusader from my brother when he stopped playing (he also played CF's and lasted longer than I did) and an unassembled normal land raider from a friend for my birthday last year (he had it kicking around and heard i was getting back into things.) Pretty self explanatory what I've got to do here.

Last but not least (by far)
Space Marines:
Over the last year I have amassed a good number of space marine models. Originally with the intention of converting them to chaos (since they were free,) then with the intention of combining efforts with a friend (who plays orks) to make a full company of a DIY chapter (but he backed out on it and sold me his marines cheap) so I decided to challenge myself once again to something I have never done: Paint yellow.

That's right, this:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2514/3777283530_cfe31c5569_o.jpg

Is the starting of my Imperial Fists army. Pictured here I've got:
53 marines
6 terminators
7 bikes + 1 attack bike upgrade kit (in the small box)
17 scouts (3 seargeants, 2 shotguns, 4 snipers and 8 BP/CCW)
2 Rhinos
2 Dreadnoughts
3 chaplains (1 on bike, 1 jumppack, 1 on foot)
1 emperor's champion
and

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2661/3776576903_b2714832e3_o.jpg

Captain Cortez of my original CF army. This man was a pimp, even when I used him as a regular captain he took forever to go down. I couldn't sell him when I sold the rest of my guys, plus he was one of the first models I painted so he had sentimental value. Sat on my desk protecting me from heretics and xenos all this time. I'm not going to repaint him so he's going to be my mascot in any further pictures I take.
Not displayed here is a bag of random ultrasmurfs stuff I picked up that need to be stripped if I'm going to do anything with, three assault terminators (old metal models,) a landspeeder, my captain and 5 terminators in the AOBR labelled box. As you can see I've already started some test models, but I ordered some Imperial Fist tactical squad conversion packs from my local gw and stuff is on hold until that arrives.

For August I will paint a 10 man squad of Khorne Berzerkers with powerfist, personal icon and meltabombs on the Skull champion for 245 pts. I will try to get ahead of myself this month since I am still on summer break from college and I might have some busy periods once it starts up again.

Irondog: Don't worry Cortez has got your back mate!

G'day I'm kiwichild and I'll be painting 1000pts of Genestealer Cult. I'll be using the Witchunters and Imperial Guard armylist. Just a couple of pics today, check out my plog (in sig) for more comprehensive W.I.P pics and background.

Here goes:

Genstealers (Sisters Repentia)
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd50/naganokiwi/P1010464.jpg

Started the blue stage on these guys this morning, mordian blue and a heavy wash of asurman blue.

Hybrids (Sisters of Battle)
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd50/naganokiwi/P1010465.jpg

Finished their greenstuff and basecoats over the last two days.

List:
HQ

Inq Lord with warrior, familiar, warrior, warrior, acolyte, penitent and priest - 166pts

Elite

Repentia (Genestealer) 9 - 190pts

Troop

SOB (Hybrid) Melta, Flamer and imagifer -160pts
SOB (Hybrid) Melta, Flamer and imagifer -160pts

CMD Squad - 40pts
Inducted Guard (Brood Brothers) Hvy Bolter and Grenade Launcher - 84pts
Inducted Guard (Brood Brothers) Hvy Bolter and Grenade Launcher - 84pts

Fast Attack

Sentinels (Cult Limos) 3 with multi-lasers

Heavy Support
Cmd - 40pts
Inducted IG heavy weapons (Brood Brother) Hvy Bolter -45pts
Inducted IG heavy weapons (Brood Brother) Missile Launcher -60pts

Penitent Engine (Lictor) - 80pts

Exorcist (Kitbash) - 134pts

So that comes in at 1374pts, so if I break 1000pts....... I can keep going, right Mr. McMullet?

I have just looked at McMullet's list. It appears there are only 8 of us painting Tyranids. (7 40K and 1 Painting Epic)

So I got started. Knarloc Green foundation and 2 pots of Thraka Green wash later:

http://www.thousand-sons.co.uk/images/galleries/IMG_0817.JPG

Unfortunately my remaining marines are a mishmash of armies collected over the years. I was a Ravenguard player with the previous codex where veteran marines could swap their bolters for bolt pistol/ccw. Now only assault marines have that option so I present Assault Squad Hysteron (with no jump packs)

http://www.thousand-sons.co.uk/images/galleries/IMG_0828.JPG

With a little detailing:

And the unit that started the whole project, Terminator Squad Tychon:

Just waiting on my decal paper so I can get some transfers printed off for unit markings and chapter badge.

The rest of my army shots can be found on my website: Thousand Sons: Mantis Warriors by Daemonkin (http://www.thousand-sons.co.uk/category/20)

no bull, gimme-a-d, Harry is a machine!

Folks!

Thanks Trib, didn´t know that!

Having failed terribly and dropped out of the last tale because I was unable to finish 1500 points of Orks, I decided to sign up for 2000 points this time :p

This includes the rest of my Orks and the "rest" of my CSM.

All those who took part last year know the Orks, the "Waaagh-Ugh", Heavy Metal worshipping greenskins. This year brings the MadMax part of the tribe. All the vehicles are to be done. The rough list looks like this:

3 trukks, including a schoolbus, Rambos armytruck and a beertruck

3 buggies, a police car, Mad Maxens turboboost-monster and the red pickup from the movie. Or so...

Some bikes, number undecided, converted to resemble classic rocker bikes

A Wartrukk, converted from a Ford or Peterbuilt truck. This one will rock!

Kanz, freakstuff...

Maybe a stompa, depending on the time I can spare for that.

All of the above which is not bike will be nonGW parts, some exsisting kits converted, the rest scratch, plasticard madness.

I have a rest of burnas and a shoota/slugga mob to build and paint aswell.

The CSM army might be known as the Bleeding Legion, basically like a Black Legion army with a Khorne theme. List goes something like this:

Berzerkers, 10; Possessed, 5; Juggerlord, almost finished; Terminators, 10, maybe 5 of them Nurgle; Characters, 2, termielord and regular lord; Predators, 2, Khorne and Nurgle, Rhino; Landraider, almost done, but major flagworks left; Defiler, possessed by bloodletters. Hopefully the second DREAD!
The deal about the CSM is the level of painting. I want to (already am) go for a high TTstandard. Some may already know what I am talking about.

That´s it. Looking closely at my scribblings I find more than 2000 p. So we might not see all which I noted down here, but at least a good deal.
Thanks goes out to McMullet once more for letting me do it like this. I could have gone for two times 1000, but that might not be what it comes down to aswell. Thanks for keeping it flexible here!

Good luck to everyone! I am looking forward to seeing all your efforts, getting inspiration and the occasional kicks in the rear!

By the way, where is Gonzo?

Cheers and thanks for reading

I've spent about an hour today filling gaps with greenstuff. Also painted the cockpit interior. The Top Camo is going to be roughly the same shade as the interior, with perhaps a few other tones thrown in for good measure. The underside is going to be your standard sky grey.

hello everyone!

i signed up for 1500 pts of salamander space marines.
i only have the black reach box until now and 3 tin terminators with a storm cannon and a great flamer.

depending on my luck with ebay i might increase army size throughout this tale. i started my first tactical squad the two first models i started were to dark more looking like dark angels, so i started overbrushing them with scorpion green and washing with thraka green and bedab black. but to show a impression on how i work i will show you a picture with the two first models with the to dark color scheme:

http://geekery.de/beide_marines.jpg

later this month i will show the whole squad with the correct color scheme.
they will have 185 pts.

good look and have fun every one!;)

And another installment of this fine idea, very good, very good. :D

After the last Tale - technically it is still running, but please ignore that - I have achieved a thing I hadn't before: a playable and painted army. After over ten years in the hobby! Over the course of the last twelve months I saw my Daemons grow to the now over 1000 points I can field, and the bring me a lot of joy. You feel like you can never stick to a single project? You feel like you never have enough motivation to get anything finished? Then look no further, as this is the place to be. Sign up, and we'll push you to your goals!

For this time around I'll stick to my Chaos forces for another 1000 points, and there will be also 1000 points of Orks. My intention is to bring my Daemons to at least 1500 points in total, and to add a combat patrol sized portion of CSM, to allow for scenarios of CSM summoning said daemons into (bigger) battles.

The Orks will consists of nobs in mega armour, and many of them, plus some battle wagons and whatever fancies me. Regarding this, I have a question to everybody involved: does anybody have the old models of orks in mega armour? Those of the Bad Moons clan. If you do, and are willing to trade or sell, please get in contact with me. There is already a thread in the Wanted-section of the board, but asking twice never hurts.

I won't post any army lists or painting plans for now, as my experience from the last year is, that things like that change a lot - sometimes on a day-by-day basis. :D

I hope to get some WIP shots of my Orks up soon, and wish everybody else luck and the motivation to get through this. You won't regret the efforts spent here! :)

Oi Rickie get back to the blue and bone - your doing the Marines Errant! Oh well, ok then. Think you may have force Warren into doing Lamenters/Imp Fists for definite now!

Full company = 1 squad and transport each month for 10 months with command, dreads and characters in the other 2 months.

Guys, I am sorry, but I have decided to drop out. I havent touched a 40K model in nearly a month, and since I have been sucked into flames of war, 40K has lost its appeal to me. However, if I am permitted to switch to a 1500 point FoW Rangerific army, I would be most apreciative.

OK, well this thread has been up for 3 days so I suppose I should really post something up.

My name is Sam and I'm an alco...

Anyway, this is the start of year 3 of the Good Ship Tale of 40K Painters. A little over 2 years ago spikedog asked a simple question in his project log (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1633255#post1633255)(which is well worth a read through for those of you who haven't seen his work before) about motivation... a couple of posts later from Harry and I, the private messages started flying and suddenly everything is out of control...

Over the last two years I've dragged myself into action and finished two complete armies (well OK, there are a few things to finish on both... but they're mostly finished). In the first Tale of Painters I painted a 2000pt horde of Tyranids (http://mcmulletsminis.fotopic.net/c1389409.html), and I'm currently finishing off my last batch of 4000pts of Epic Orks (http://mcmulletsminis.fotopic.net/c1390596.html).

I'm rather disillusioned with the state of 40K right now (I won't go into my opinions about the rules) and there isn't anything I'm overly bothered about in the 28 mm world. So, one again, I'm in the Specialist Games camp!

First up will be a 2000 (probably more like 2300 in total) Chaos fleet for Battlefleet Gothic. I'm not sure exactly what the list will be, but these are the ships I'll paint (just not sure which I'll use regualrly or what upgrades they'll get):

DESPOILER-CLASS BATTLESHIP MORSITAN IXODES

HADES-CLASS HEAVY CRUISER ASCARIS SUUM
ACHERON-CLASS HEAVY CRUISER
MURDER-CLASS CRUISER

SLAUGHTER-CLASS CRUISER (Daemonship)
SLAUGHTER-CLASS CRUISER (Daemonship)

DEVASTATION-CLASS CRUISER AEDES
DEVASTATION-CLASS CRUISER ANOPHELES

6x INFIDEL-CLASS RAIDERS
3x ICONOCLAST-CLASS DESTROYERS

The fleet will be Nurgle-themed, so there will be general air of decay about the ships (and obviously the Daemonships will be covered in weeping sores and suchlike). Part of the reason for painting what's listed there is that I can ensure Papa Nurgle's favour by proper use of sacred numbers - I have a few 2000 point list where I have 7 Cap ships, 7 Escorts and 7 Squadrons.

I know nothing about BFG tactics but as long as I please my patron god he should reqard me. Also, all of the ship names will be Latin names of viruses, bacteria, parasites etc.. First up will be an Infidel and a Devastation I think.

I also want to paint another Epic army, this time 4000 points of Space Marines. I have a slight problem here, in that I appear to have mislaid my sprues of SM infantry, so I have rather less models to paint than I thought I did. In addition, Forgeworld have stoped making their rather lovely Warhound Titans, which is vexing as I was planning to use two of them. I have enough to last a little while though, so the current plan is to paint what I have and, when that's all gone I'll see if I can find more models (or can afford to buy them) and if Forgeworld are selling Warhounds again.

In any case, the SM army will be a chapter of my own devising, which has been kicking around in my head for the best part of 5 years. I was sick and tired of home-made (and indeed canon) chapters who are AMAZINGLY AWESOME AT EVERYTHING and VIRTUOUS AND UNFLINCHINGLY BRAVE TO THE LAST and all that jazz, so decided to make an army of Space Marines who, whilst not knowing fear on a personal level, are rather prone to hiding from the enemy to preserve their own hides and generally prefer to shoot them with big guns from a long way away rather than getting into an honest fight. Not out of cowardice, but out of prudence (which is not very fashionable among the Adeptus Astartes).

The army will have a desert theme (using camo!) with lots of Devastators, Land Speeders, Thunderhawks and so on. If I get anywhere with it.

Now, some comments on your stuff!

Harry: Quite a horde of Nids you have there! Do I espy some metal Hormagaunts and a 2nd edition Hive Tyrant there?

Badgobbla: Great test mini, smooth grey and the blacklining looks excellent.

daemonkin: Sounds like you have some good stuff in the works, and the stuff you have already is coming along really well - nice simple technique but it works!

Deusmex: Is he hunting Tywanids? :p

misterboff: Good to have you on board again! I'm amazed you aren't bored of blue Orks yet!

Lucky: That Infantryman looks good, if you can get that standard of painting on 30 blokes a month it'll look great! One thing I would say, it's hard to tell the two greens apart, would it be worth picking a more contrasting colour for one of them? (It could be the lighting of course.)

EmperorNorton: I really like the bone colour on the armour. Very smooth and clean looking.

Explodingboy: I really like the camo!

ReaperOfSouls: Good to have you back, I love the look of your nids!

BoyMilla: The Dire Avenger looks very nice, really smooth painting. Look forward to seeing the squad done.

Jim Reaper: Looks like a good scheme, hope to see something bigger soon!

RCgothic: Wow! The Marauder is coming along great. Since you're painting all these as one "army", I should really put you down as one 4000 point "Imperials" entry or something.

sigur: No Epic suqats, but a few Squat mercenaries is a good compensation I guess. :D

Zujara: White is always a pain! It's also tricky to photograph; I can't really comment onthis from the pictures at the white parts are a bit overexposed. What colour are you using to shade the white? Spikyjames's white technique is work checking out.

red/winter: Quite a collection you have there! Love the old-school banner on Captain Cortez.

kiwichild: Looking great so far - some excellent "counts as" units and some lovely old models (and of course you'll get no complaints if you paint more than you planned to!). What are using for the Limos?

Warlord Nazgred: That's a very Stompy army you've planned there! Love the wrecking ball.

warflag: Sounds like some great stuff in the offing, we missed out on a lot of the Mad Max side of your Orks last time!

b3e: Good work so far.

Cheers mate, I figured the 1000pts would give me some breathing space if my natural slacker tendencies kick in. I'm really hoping to hit 1500pts, but we'll see how it all works out in the end. Limo-wise I'll be using these chaps, the prototype has been sitting on the desk stalled for about 2.5 years now.

So you have an idea of how my stuff looks, have some pictures of near-finished Red Corsairs:

I really like the way you paint those guys, the morphing colours are awesome.

Also for this month I will attempt to paint these bases, one for the dread and five for some terminators already painted. I'm going for an urban/ruin look.
Those bases are awesome, where did you get them from?

Hello everyone.

I shall be painting Tyranids.

That's a lovely set of nids Harry, but we all know you'll be painting far too many wolves on the side.

Hey everybody,
OK, first things first: I already painted up a testmodel for my space wolves a while ago (after learning that they would be the next codex to be released).

That blacklining is amazing, did you use a pen or a brush?

Guess it's my turn to introduce my plans. The short version would be to simply say: Guardsmen and loads of them. And support, dont forget the support.
My IG army will be a classic foot army with tanks and artillery for support.
Foot sloggers and tanks.......NICCCCCEEEEEEEEEE, good luck with painting heaps of feet. I've got about 25 inducted guard to do myself, hopefully pick up the codex in the next couple of weeks.

Project: Mantis Warriors
So 2k Mantis Warriors, here I come!

Dreads and termies, will you pinch some of those hirst art bitz for basing?

2000 points of Ulthwe.
Meet Elmer.

Excuse me, is that wraithlord flipping the bird? Classic! I thought that was just for snotlings and night goblins.

Hi gang!
I'm going to paint the Ammo Runt too, but save it to be used for a potential Flash Gitz mob later on...

Have you checked out the ammo runts that GW does as bitz packs, the grots with pirates' hats. Nothing says flash gitz like pirate hats.

Loving what I see so far, this tale I will be painting a Witch Hunter force led by an Inquisitor with several Sister
Nice start.

Hey folks, Irondog here.
I've been wanting to paint a Crimson Fists army for some time.

OOOOOOOOH Fists, hope you have plenty of left-over ork bitz for bases and trophies.

Greetings, gentlemen.
For the first month, I will start off with a unit of Squat Mercenaries counting as hardened veterans and probably a Command Squad. With commissions, I have really a lot to paint this month plus I'm moving house so i'm looking forward to a busy month of painting.

Squats!?!........Happy, happy, joy, joy.

Greetings all, I am the sectionable nutter doing four armies.
My first project of the tale is a Marauder Destroyer for the Imperial Navy.

Wow!

Greetings everyone! I'm Jim Reaper, and I'll be painting 2000 points' worth of Adeptus Mechanicus for Battlefleet Gothic.
My first month's painting will be one of the Dictators.
Any chances of giant servo arm boarding claws?

Did you know The United Nations has known for many years that chuck norris contains weapons of mass destruction, but NOBODY enters chuck norris!

You're painting chuck norris? Dude, be careful?

an Inquisition Grey Knight Task Force and a Chaos Cultist uprising with daemonic tendencies.

Cults and Inquistion, sweet.

Month 1, I plan to paint 10 Dire Avengers. Here's a very WIP shot of a test mini I've started.

You've started painting blue too, good luck mate, I feel your pain.

Good luck everyone, and keep that paint flowing!

Nice start on the zonies.

So I'll be doing 1500pts of Chaos Marines
Umm Earthbeard, I'd hide some of those assembled boys away from your painting area, that just looks daunting. Good luck mate.

As for me, I gave some old minis a soak in paint remover and have been furiously scrubbing them clean today.

Ouch, paint removal so tedious, but love the tzeentch theme.

I present the completed test figure for the 41st Cadian infantry.

That wee chap just looks staunch.

Yes, yes you are a nutter. Good luck

I've signed up for 2000 points of Imperial Guard goodness.

hi all, nice start to the Top

I'm painting Ork's in this tale.. It's been quite a long time since I painted any 40K models, LotR, flames and fantasy have kept me quite busy.

Not really sure on the points but I have 4 boxes of assault of black reach, two boxes of grots and 2 boxs of Nobs + trucks.

I love playing orks, their style of game being so agressive and suicidal but the models seem a bit too comical for me, patically the grinning heads so I'm using ogre heads from GW's fanatasy range.

I'm hoping the final army is about 2500 points, mixed force of half truckboyz and mobs of 30 models on foot backed up by deff copters and Nobz in trucks.

Cheers and good luck all

Hi all,

So, after years and years as a Fantasy player eyeing all those lovely 40K minis, I will finally start my long-awaited Ork army. And while I'm at it, I thought I might as well share. :)

So, I would like to sign up for this year's Tale of 40K Painters with an Evil Sunz army. I'm not sure if I want to call them Speed Freakz, but my intention is for them to be almost fully mechanised. A quick estimation of everything I have planned comes up to about 2000 points.

WIP army list will follow once I get home, test figure once I figure out how to do a proper photo. :)

For Space Marines, I would try eBay, or succumb to buying a Battle Company. I still think the Warhounds will reappear, or maybe even appear as a new model. There are rumours about Forgeworld doing a Titan version of AI, replicating their 40K titans in a smaller scale. (AT?) If worst comes to worst, and Forgeworld stops selling Warhounds, I might be able to help you - if you are looking for the standard weapons' configuration. I am in a somewhat similar situation, not knowing whether to convert or wait for my Grey Knight Terminators to reappear.

After the battle was over and the city had finally been captured, most of the western parts having been completely ruined, Lord Maro Blackflame was approached by one of his lieutenants.
“What of the survivors, sir? We have found a group hauled up inside some of the empty warehouses to the north and have barricaded themselves inside. We believe the Imperial Governor has fled there as well after his failed last stand at the palace. Our brothers are ready to flush them out with cleansing fire if you want them captured.”
Lord Blackflame thought for a minute, and then answered.
“No, keep them inside. Use the fire, but block the exits. Let them burn. They will serve as an example to those who would confront us. Let them fill the air with the stink of their searing flesh. Let them drawn out all other sounds with their dying screams. Let them light up the night sky with their burning carcasses. Let them show to any who comes after that the Dragon Warriors have claimed this city as their own and that we have served up its inhabitants as offerings to the Dark Gods.”

Hi all! Thalenchar here with my plan for this tale. I am planning on working my way through a 1500 pts Chaos Space Marine City Fight force, painting them in the colours of the Dragon Warriors (test model pic will be up asap). This means lots of infantry and lots of flamers! I don't have a list worked out in detail yet because I'm planning on playing more city fight games as I paint more Marines. So far I've found that I need bigger squads! (I used lots of 5 man squads in the first city fight battle I played the other day) So, for the first two months, I will be painting two full ten man Marine squads. This will be double helpful for me because in addition to getting the mandatory Troops choices out of the way, it will also provide me with two full squads I can use for a GT army I'm doing! This army needs to be finished early november-ish, so unfortunately I won't be able to paint that up as part of the Tale, but that's not stopping me from painting up two squads that I can use in both armies!
After the two Troops choices I'm not really sure what I'll do next. I have veterans laying around as well as a Defiler, and I'm planning on getting a Vindicator too. Also need to squeeze in some Havocs. And of course spend some time converting a lovely HQ choice....
So much to do! Can't wait to get started!

Hi all. I'm going to be painting nids for this tale and they'll hopefully get further than my attempted marines did last time out. However (and this may seem like a bit of a poor start) I'm probably going to have to joker the first month...

I have a warhammer tournement coming up at the end of August and I still have a lot of stuff I need to get painted for that. If I somehow get it all done and have time left before I go on holiday on the 1st September I'll try and get my old school hive tyrant done as he's a sizable whack of points and shouldn't take too long to paint. I should improve after this first month though so bear with me and I'm hoping to make the points up in October (when I have less Orcs to paint as I'll build up a buffer this month)

I'm going for a winter theme with the idea that the nids have evolved to blend into the environment so I'm going with blue and white. It didn't come out too well on my test stealers which you can see in my plog but hopefully practice makes perfect and they'll start to look half decent by the end of the tale.

Harry's suggestion of keeping an eye on the other Tyranid painters seems a good idea so once we start to see some completed models I'll try and comment on them all.

Right, got some more progress shots.

Finished converting my first priest for the army, bar a tiny bit of green stuff work on her left boot, will be adding a seal to the top of the tassel that I didn't feel like trying to carve off.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i52/Blarg_88/41st/SSL20318.jpg

Secondly, another shot to show the now almost complete first squad.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i52/Blarg_88/41st/SSL20315.jpg

I'm just finishing the skin now, and then all that is left is the basing.

So in all I'm making good progress to have the first submission done before I leave on the 19th.

I'm Karegak and I'm painting Epic Orks, 3000 points. Since I've got a big selection of miniatures (bigger than I'd care to dig through) I'll simply make it up as I go. This month that means a big warband at 350 points. (4 nobz stands, 12 boyz stands and 4 grotz stands).

Next month I'm thinking of a normal Blitz brigade (4 gunwagonz) and a Fighta-bomma squadron (3 fighta-bommerz) for 150 points each. I want to add an oddboy to the Blitz brigade but since he's 75 points, I'll fit him in sometime later.

As for colors I'll be doing Evil Sunz. Two reasons: I've got tons of vehicles and Red is just so orky.

Epic Ork dictionary for you 28mm people.
Normal: an ordinary ork unit.
Big: an ork unit twice the size of a normal unit for a discounted points cost.
'Uge: an ork unit thrice the size of a normal unit for a discounted points cost.
E.g: A normal warband (2 nobz, 6 boyz and 2 grotz) costs 200, a big costs 350 and a 'uge comes in at 500 points.

Edit: Forgot to proofread.

@ kiwichild I got them from http://www.darkartstore.darkartminiatures.com/ they are not bad quality considering these are my first time buying resin bases or even resin stuff. I've always been a bit weary because of the whole dust stuff. I'll get working on them once I have done the dreadnought and recovered from the weekend!

Greetings all, for both of the previous tales, I failed by pledging too much and too many armies, so this time I am scaling back and trying to keep things sane.

I am painting 2 armies, one an Imperial guard 1500 point army (if I have a month that is a crunch, I can always paint tanks) As to which IG regiment, it will be a mixed force since I have lots of everything, but Cadians primarily.

For my Dark Angels, I plan to go Deathwing heavy, with some support from the other parts of the list as well. 1500 points of Deathwing can be a quite small list as well. If I somehow get ahead of myself I can always bump up the points a bit. Considering that the first squad I have started to paint will be 245 points, deathwing points add up fast. I also started my Belial conversion and a Chaplain in Termie armor.

I just noticed this thread and would love to participate.

My plan: I have, while working on other, more chaos-y projects, acquired over the last six months or so about a battle company of space marines (I might be short a box or two of tactical marines to fill out the Devestator boxes, but I can pick those up when they come up.) I want to paint them up as Soul Drinkers, fluffwise I want to make them not only pre-novels, but equip them with M36 stuff as an "Age of Apostasy" army, largely based on their inclusion here (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Reign_of_Blood#The_end_of_Empire) in the forces that went to assault Terra. I've done a test tactical marine and a test terminator (free WD termie), but when I look at the giant pile of them, I feel a little bit intimidated. This, however, seems like a reasonable way to get things done.

So I think I'm going to try to do one squad a month for ten months (6 tac squads, 2 assault squads, 2 dev squads), if that's okay, rather than trying to do it by points. Since I want to be able to drop pod the entire army, I'm also going to be looking to do a drop pod for each squad, one per month. I think the army came out to something like 3000 or 4000 points (that might have been including various other vehicles and other HQ choices which are also in the pile which I think I'll leave out of the scope of this project), and I can post a more exact point total later.

General plan:
Aug: Tactical Squad + Drop Pod
Sept: Tactical Squad + Drop Pod
Oct: Tactical Squad + Drop Pod
Nov: Tactical Squad + Drop Pod
Dec: Tactical Squad + Drop Pod (hopefully they'll start to look good by this point)
Jan: Tactical Squad + Drop Pod
Feb: Assault Squad (magnetized to switch between JPs and DP) + Drop Pod
Mar: See Feb
April: Devastator Squad (magnetized for weapons?) + Drop Pod
May: Devastator Squad (magnetized for weapons?) + Drop Pod
If by this point I still haven't had to use a joker:
June: Command Squad + Drop Pod
July: Vehicles

Typing this up, it doesn't seem overly ambitious, but I can't help but suspect that this just shows the hubris which will inevitably be my downfall.

Ugh.....I think Im done for at least 3 months in advance. I decided to work on a tank platoon, which is 575 points. Ah well, all the more excuses to grow the ranks I guess. I still need my last Sherman to finish the platoon, but at least 4 out of 5 aint a bad start.

Great stuff coming together already! Nice wolf there, Dino. I see a csm backpack, thirteenth company?

Some from me. The starting point of my two armies. Sort of testminis for this big project we are all up to.

One of the Orks:

And one of the CSM already done:

Over the course of the tale I hope to finish considerable reinforcemets for the above!
Hope it gets BIG.

I started painting my stuff and disaster struck! I went and picked Tzeentch of all armies and after starting to highlight my first model I realized I had forgotten something important... I am hopeless at painting blue. Doesn't help that about half my army is, well, blue. :cries: Oh well, I started it, so now I'm going to finish it. *mutter*

Anyway, here's one of my first horrors. Painted a few of them to start off. There's highlights on other bits than the face too, it didn't photograph well.

http://i32.tinypic.com/zt8aiv.jpg

This month that means a big warband at 350 points. (4 nobz stands, 12 boyz stands and 4 grotz stands).

Man, I am *so* glad I got that over with last year. ;)

LegendFX: Really liking the shermans, though it does seem odd to have vehicles on a base!

Dino: Very impressive first Wolf!

warflag: I like your improvised orky vehicles, and the colour scheme on your CSM is particularly effective.

Discord: Don't worry about your blue, that horror looks amazing!

It might be a little odd RC, but it keeps em level, and doesnt ruin the painting on the tracks. Also, with the bases, flock and all that jazz done, it really helps to highlight the feeling of unity throughout the army.

Hello
Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who hasn't actually posted WIPs yet. I forgot that I'd be away on holidays for the first couple of weeks of this month. I will try to have a wip up by the 20th. It will be a tac squad with trimmings.
Looking forward to more WIPs guys, although it seems a good few haven't posted just yet.

I think I'm happy with my paint scheme now-

Without flash:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i108/Geep_2006/PaintScheme2.png

It's not the most unique colour scheme, but I think it's a good compromise between what I want to do and what my girlfriend wants (she's been bugging me for purple 'nids for ages- no bad pun intended).
The bases won't be painted like this one- I was going to make it a light grey rocky base with heavy snow though, to contrast against the very dark models. The end result should be similar to the army shown in White Dwarf 231's battle report.

Although thismay easily change a lot, I'll make a basic army list (in groups of roughly 200 pts)

Broodlord
12 Genestealers

20 Spinegaunts
10 Deathgaunts

10 Deathgaunts
2 Raveners

4 Raveners

20 Hormagaunts

20 Hormagaunts

20 Termagants
1 Lictor

10 Gargoyles
3 Tyranid Warriors

3 Biovores
3 Tyranid Warriors

Hive Tyrant

Carnifex

Carnifex

I'll save a full list of comments until the month's end, but I like what I'm seeing so far. Good luck to everyone.

I agree with harry. That gaunt is looking nice. Not sure I like the yellow part though. Might just be me, but I think it stands out a bit too much. I would probably go with the same turquoise as you have used for the joints instead of the yellow, but then again I am a sucker for limited palettes for tyranids :)

I must say you have quite an ambitious task ahead with all those gaunts you have planned. i don't envy you on that. I am sure it will be an impressive sight if you manage to get that horde painted up :)

+1 = 3

i think it has some serious potential  but i agree with reaper and nkicik, i think those fleshy yellowy slashes take away from the impact of it a little, i think a shade of blue would be better, maybe the same shade as the joints, maybe something just a bit darker lighter or greener, but i don't like the orange.

I rather like the turquoise and yellow touches- very nice contrasts to the overall dark scheme. How are you planning on basing your nids? Think something bright might set the purple off really well like jungle/long grass type of thing or you could go blasted rock/cityscape grey. i love gaunts myself- purely for that wicked little bugger look!

Heh, I can imagine. Mine have been lying in a box since 2005. However infantry shouldn't be a problem, it's the multitude of vehicles that I find really scary.

Hello all. It's a late start for me already it would seem.

First of all, let me say how glad I am to be the only person here attempting Tau. Now I won't have anything to compare mine to, and people might not notice how shameful they are!

I'm going to be dipping 1500 points of Tau. I won a large auction on ebay, which has been sitting on my shelf in boxes untouched ever since, and I was sick of looking at it all. Knowing my tendency to abandon projects, I decided that the best approach would be to dip them, and hopefully get them to tabletop standard as quickly and painlessly as possible, and save them going to waste. The TOP seemed the perfect opportunity for this project.

Good luck everybody.

Dear all

Firstly... I've rather missed the boat in terms of that start on this...

Page 5 of peoples thoughts, works and desires... and I haven't even got on here to leave a comment.

Lets start off with the usual bits and bobs...

Firstly.. My name is Daniel and I am a wargamer

I live in the sleepy little city of Worcester, just south of Birmingham in the Midlands of the UK, and frequent my local GW almost daily.

I've been playing since around 1989, and have far too many soldiers to even begin to think listing them here.

I was introduced to the world or warseer (as well as the world of warcraft but thats another story) last year... and since then have spent far too long leaving posts, thoughts and pictures all over here.

This is the first time ive signed up to do a 'tale of painters' and I'm looking forward to it.

This year I am working on an Inquisition force, to add to an Arbite army that i painted about 2-3 years ago now.

http://i331.photobucket.com/albums/l460/gonzosbignose/inquisition.jpg

I've spent the last 14 months working on Orks. (see link at bottom of my post) I must say im pleased to see how many greenskin armies are on the cards for this, but for now, I've put the Bloodaxes of Burnum Wood to one side and I'm going INquisitiony...

I haven't put a points total on how many I am planning on doing, and there is very much a reason for this... Quite simply... I don't know what I'm planning on doing...

I've got a number of GKs and some stormtroopers converted from cadians, and I guess ive got a bit of inquisitor and retinue stuff to do... but i also plan on doing a few sisters etc...

For that reason, I think each months update will be a case of... what you get!

I know this isnt typical for the tale, but i'm a very sporadic painter, and whilst I will definitely post 200pts a month, due to the way my business life is, I can find myself away alot, and that can have sometimes a big impact on what im painting, in both good and bad ways.

Right... some other points to make...

WARFLAG - By the way, where is Gonzo?

Warflag... here I am!!!

Badgobbla... very nice space pup... crisp and well executed.

Explodingboy... nice camo on your guard... if you see my ork blog you'll know I'm a big camo lover, and I dare say we may see a bit more in this Tale...

Reaper... Good looking Nid Scheme

Kiwichild...

To all the rest of you, I have read this thread through front to back and over the coming months I will leave responses to you all...

I wish you all the best of luck on this venture...

I have some horrors (RT era) to paint up but other than that I have several large things that I'm adding and although I would normally leave the LOC to a month where I'm short of time there didn't seem much point as I would really only be doing another big guy. Hi, I'm Math Mathonwy and my track record with Tales sucks.

I'd still like to join again.

This time I'm going with a 1000-point Daemon force. I can't fail! And why is that?

Most of my list has been cleaned, converted and primed.
I'm using dip with my Plaguebearers and my Bloodletters. Even though I do highlight them beforehand, the dip does speed things up.
I have two squads of three Flamers worth 105 points each. Both have been primed. How hard can it be to finish three minis a month?
I have a Tzeentch Herald worth 80 points. How hard can it be to finish one mini in a month?
I have a Keeper of Secrets worth 200 points converted and primed. How hard can it be to finish one model in two moths?

Armed with the two Jokers I can't fail! *shakes fist*

The list is going to be something like this (will change - I'd like to add one Herald of Slaanesh in a chariot at least):

Keeper of Secrets = 200
Herald of Tzeentch (Bolt of Tzeentch) = 80

3 x Flamers of Tzeentch = 105
3 x Flamers of Tzeentch = 105

10 x Plaguebearers (Icon) = 175
8 x Bloodletters = 128
9 x Horrors (Bolt of Tzeentch, Changeling) = 168

== 961 (so something more, but we'll see).

Maximally undivided featuring something from everyone.

Now, I have a question. I have four Plaguebearers painted already. What should I do with them? Shall I count the PB squad as only 115 points painted?

Here are the four to give an idea on the effects of the dip:

http://i39.tinypic.com/1pt6yx.jpg

Anyway, I was thinking of tackling a Flamer squad this month.

Thanks! I'm using Army Painter Dark Tone and I apply the dip by brush (to prevent pooling and allowing better control). I really like the dark tone as I get really dark shadows where I want them and the greens don't become as brownish as they do with the lighter tones. I also highlighted the minis beforehand and did some (but not much) touching up afterwards.

Okay, signing up!

After failing miserably in last years tale...(and not really painting at all since I drifted into the warp) I'll be changing armies for a change of pace.

I'll be doing about 1500 points of 'old style' Astral Claws space marines, using the regular SM codex.

Hoping to get a pic of a finished test model up in the next few days...

While no progress on the dreadnought has been made I finished the base he is going to stand on. I also got another load of bases from another place (Dragonforge)

Looking at these pictures now it looks like it came out pretty well, pleased with that :D

Hey guys, I'm going to be joining into this myself since I got a few friends doing it also. I have two army lists of Sisters and Black Templars that are each partially painted and I would like to both get a lot closer to completion. I will try to finish my Templars first since they are the army I am currently fielding. Anyways looking forward to having some stuff to post.

Hi, I'm Math Mathonwy and my track record with Tales sucks.

Don't worry, I think I can motivate you enough for the coming Tale, and be it by heavy usage of (daemonic) pointy sticks.

Your plan sounds good, and I think it is a goal both worth working for and managable. My Daemons from last year were 1000 points too, and it is something I could do, and I'm propably the most slow and lazy painter in the world. This year I'll do the next 1000 points with good motivation to do so, you see there is something else to go for after this Tale!

Considering your plagueberares, they look excellent so far, and I'd be most interested in a recipe for the painting. I already have two squads of them painted, each differently, and a third squad awaits some paint. Yours look too amazing to not copy them. :D

And a piece of advice: keep those flamers until you run a bit low on motivation. They are almost like using a joker.

Hi there,
I am Wizzard and will be painting an 1700 pts Eldar force.
Maybe a bit more actually, depends on what models I want to add to my army.
Since I mostly fancy painting the figures and don’t care much about playing I usually don’t have any problem finishing an army.

At the moment I am testpainting the first miniatures for the army.

Since my army does not exist of that many models I am going to paint a number of models a month instead of painting a set point value.
At first I will give you the armylist I am aiming at:

Yriel, Prince of Iyanden 155
Farseer, runes of witnessing, runes of warding, spirit stones, Doom and Mind War 145
6 Pathfinders 144
10 Guardians with Starcannon 105
10 Dire Avengers, Exarch, add catapult, bladestorm 152
6 Firedragons, Exarch with Firepike 116
6 Striking Scorpions, Exarch with Biting Blade and Shadowstrike 133
6 Howling Banshees, Exarch with mirrorswords and Warshout 123
6 Swooping Hawks, Exarch with Sunrifle, intercept and Skyleap 173
3 Shining Spears, Exarch with Starlance and Withdraw 157
6 Warpspiders, Exarch with add deathspinner, powerblades and withdraw 174
3 Dark Reapes, Exarch with tempest launcher and fast shot 157
1 Wraithlord with Wraithsword and Brightlance 130

Total points 1864 (or so)
Total Models 65
That will make for 6 models a month.

I will start painting the most boring unit in the army to paint, and those are the guardians.

GRTZ,..

Thank you, sounds good! :)

They are really quite simple. White undercoat and then Gretchin Green with Rotting Flesh highlights. Rotting Flesh is also used to make the colour slides into Dheneb Stone on some limbs (just to add some interest). The horns and claws are just Bleached Bone. Then I applied Army Painter Dark Tone with a brush trying to not get it on the swords or other stuff that is going to be metal. Some (really quite) minor touching up with Gretching Green, Rotting Flesh and especially Bleached Bone and that's it.

As for the blades, I painted them Boltgun Metal and gave them a Badab Black wash. Then I painted a big part of the blade with Charadon Granite and over this Khemri Brown, Bestial Brown, Vermin Brown, Vomit Brown in uneven dapples. A couple of washes over the whole blade with Ogryn Flesh, Gryphonne Sepia and old Flesh Wash (from the hexagonal pots). But really, the rust is just random browns in random patterns splotched on - it's actually a very fun process and very easy but produces rather nice results.

Last a matte varnish over it all and job's a good one.

And a piece of advice: keep those flamers until you run a bit low on motivation. They are almost like using a joker.
Aye. I'll actually start with one group of Flamers as I have very limited painting time this month (I need to clean away my works station as my wife's twin sister's cat is going to stay with us for two weeks and he's prone to random acts of destruction). But I'll be sure to try and tackle something more laborous next month.

Thanks for the nice comments :D.

This is how i did it (roughly), if needed ill write it out better tomorrow, just let me know.

Model was basecoated with GW Chaos Black (spraycan).
A couple of thinned down layers Tausept Ochre.
A good wash of Dark Flesh, lets say 1 part paint, 2 parts water.
After that Iyanden Darksun, mixing in Golden Yellow for some succesive layers and after that Golden Yellow with Skull White mixed in.
I wanted the yellow to be easy and not screaming LOOK AT ME, I AM RIGHT HERE.

The Blue is a Regal Blue base color, after that a wash with Chaos Black.
Then Regal Blue highlighting with Ultramarines Blue and later on a bit of Skull White.

Gun, Scorched Brown as a basecolor, after that a thin layer of Graveyard Eart.
Followed with a wash of Devlan Mud.
Then i highlighted it with Graveyard earth and started working this up to Bleached Bone

Well its Epic 'nids for me. The method of picking an nid army in epic is a little different to most armies.

Basically you buy groups of creatures that perform different roles. Synapse, Independant, common and uncommon broods. Once you've paid for them you then combine the synapse and broods into formations as you see fit, independants are just that. So with that in mind here is my list.

Total 3000

Synapse Total 750
Strike Group 1 Vituperator 300
Attack Group 1 Hive Tyrant 100
Assault Group 3 Tyranid Warriors 125
Assault Group 3 Tyranid Warriors 125
Attack Group 1 Hive Tyrant 100

Independent Total 750
Subterranean Swarm Six Raveners 200
1 Trygon 100
Lictor Swarm 3 Lictor 150
Lictor Swarm 3 Lictor 150
Genestealer Swarm 6 Genestealers 150

Common Broods Total 925
Gargoyle Flocks 3 (12 Gargoyles) 300
Gaunt Cluster 3 (12 Termagaunts) 225
2 (8 Hormogaunts) 150
Ravener Cluster 2 (8 Raveners) 250

Uncommon Total 575
Bio-Artillery 2 Exocrine 150
Bio-Artillery 2 Dactylis 150
Assault Spawn Cluster 3 Malefactors 175
Trygon Cluster 1 Trygon 100

With that I get the following list in game

Strike Group Vituperator
4 Termagaunt
4 Gargoyle
Assault Group 3 Tyranid Warriors
2 Gargoyle
4 Termaguant
4 Hormagaunt
4 Ravener
1 Malefactor
1 Trygon
Assault Group 3 Tyranid Warriors

2 Dactylis
2 Gargoyle
Subterranean Swarm Six Raveners
1 Trygon
Genestealer Swarm 6 Genestealer

Finally my planned schedule is:

Aug 2 Hive Tyrant + 4 Gargoyle

I'm taking it easy this month with a mob of just 5 Nobz. Big Choppas for 4 of them, and 1 will be a Dok.

I've got loads of Planetstrike terrain to paint too, so I'm trying to get that out of the way in between painting my Orks.

Here's one of the Nobz with a basecoat.

Finally started work on my Blood Angels yesterday. August is very busy for me, with just so many things to get done (Tale of Fantasy Painters, Paymaster for Dogs of War online competition, Kroq-Gar for Pyramid Vault competition, Khemri Bloodbowl team needs paint as well before the end of August in addition to this) so my Angels unfortunately have been getting the short end of the stick so far. So I'm somewhat glad I only signed up for 100 points per month at this stage, although I feel I can probably do better than that after August is done and dusted.

I actually really enjoyed putting together my combat squad of Tactical Marines. Not quite done yet due to the conversion I'm doing on the Sergeant. He's gonna look something like This (http://www.therob.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/codex-imperialis.jpg) when finished. But it's been a pleasure. With my original Blood Angels, I got them all 2nd hand so there wasn't much assembly. My vanilla marines are based on AoBR so not much there either. So this is really the first time I've gotten to mess around with converting for 40k, and enjoying it a lot so far.

Work in Progress pictures to follow once I'm done with my Sergeant.

Hi gys, my name is iziuth. Havind tried the ToP twice but never getting to the end I would like to try. (driemaal scheeps recht zeggen we in het nederlands ;))

In the first installment I work on my Eldar, i got around 800 painted, but still have a long way to go. But witht he upcoming space wolves I also want to give them a go with a small force.

So i'm doing 2 Armies both with a 1000 pts. Eldar and Space Wolves.

My Eldar will mostly be filling out troops and adding some support. My idea for space wolves is to maken them for planetstrike and have mostly footslogger in drop pods.

I set the goals a bit low know, but i really want to finish the tale and have a army painted.

I will paint 10 guradians for this month with a brightlance and warlock, this is more then the 100 pts, but i will hold of the space wolves till they are released.

hhm here are some new WiP pictures of my first tactical squad counting for 170 points.

the first few pictures show my actual entire army containing

HQ:
- Vulkan He'stan
- Black Reach Captain with e-sword
Standard:
- 10 tactical marines with a synchronized flamer and a rocket launcher
- 5 tactical marines with a melta and a seargent with a plasma pistol
Elite:
- 5 Terminators with a storm cannon and a seargent with an e-sword
- 1 Black Reach cybot wiht synchronized multimelta and cybot melee weapon with stormbolter

the flamers and meltas are synchronized (twin-linked in english?)
due to Vulkan He'stans order tactic.

and the later pictures show my first tactical squad with 8 painted figures and the last pictures show 4 figures which i think are the best painted...

edit:
ah i forgott the backpacks are not ready painted right now. they are lacking the highlights, but will remain black because as far as i know that is the salamander color scheme...

Ok, so I'm here now, and I plan to bring Tanks. Imperial Guard Tanks. The plan is like one a month. Mostly Chimeras, but also some Russes and maybe some Sentinals.

So far I own two Russ and one Chimera. The plane for the first 3 months is:
M1: Leman Russ Exterminator (or whatever the one with the big ass plasma gun is)
M2: Chimera
M3: Leman Russ Vanquisher

After that I will need to go shopping, so not yet sure what will be when.

And finally, here are a couple of pics of the beginning of the first Russ. Thanks must go to Bungaroo for his awesome tanks, and especially with regards to his camo netting tut, as I have copied the method, with slightly different mats, and the look is pretty good so far.

Primed Russ, with really bad lighting:

One of my armies for this years Tale is a Bad Moons Ork army, with one "theme": nobs in mega armour. Namely the old models:

http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/ff337/Darnok_2008/Megarstungs_Aufmarsch.jpg

This is what I was able to get so far through Ebay - even though I always want more. If you have some and are willing to sell or trade, I'd be more than happy to recieve a PM from you!

Up on that pictures are also the first WIP models, and as you can see I chose gold over yellow as the primary colour for these. "Golden Waaagh" anyone? Depending on how fast I can paint them, I may or may not be upping the points total to 1500 or even 2000 points, but right now I'm happy as it is. But the models I have are more than enough for 2000 points, even though I need more battlewagons... half a dozen that is. :D

Anyway, keep it going everybody, this will be a great year!

i grounded them with chaos black spray, brushed them one or two times with snot green, then brushed them with just a little bit of scorpion green.
then i washed them with thraka green and after that with bedab black.
after the washing, i made the highlights with scorpion green!;)

Painting daemons after changing my mind about my space marines.
You just can´t have 1500p or more of deamons all new and shiny in un opened boxes and not wanting to do something whit them :D

So right now i am working on alot of things flamers, bloodthirster and converting 2 nurgle soulgrinders. also i am thinking about converting 10 plaguebearers from bloodletters.
so next month it we will probebly see a bloodthirster or 3 flamers.

I suppose I should chime in! I am still trying to decide what the background and all that is going to be. I wanna do catachan but not from catachan as I haven't painted a single red headband and have other ideas.

Basically... the New Golgothan Expeditionary Force :)

Anyhow, my first month is going to be a platoon with 2 squads and a flamer team. 270pts right there. Looking forward to seeing more stuff!

If I don't comment it's nothing personal! Just making remarks on some stuff for now.
@explodingboy: Very neat, modern earth concept on your guard! I like to see unique guard armies like this.

@deathcorp: Scary army. Doing some sort of Deathwing flavor?

@Mr. Feral: I always figured chaos would be a little bit more... well... chaosy. You're really starting to capture that with the mishmashy style of paint and the worn look.

@Adeptus Mechanicus: Wow, looks like a lot of great posing. I didn't do my orks based soley on the fact I would epic fail. And Flash Gitz!! Can't wait to see the conversions for this oh so rarely used unit.

@b3e: Are you intentionally painting lighter then normal Sallies or is it a lighting effect?

@Norsehawk: Like someone else said, very clean! Too clean?

@gonzosbignose: Man, if you do all NMM for your army, you'll be a master of it by the end!

@wizzard: LOVE the iyanden scheme. Paint jobs like this make me wanna play Eldar!

@legendFX: Flames of War, very cool. Looking forward to seeing it come through.

@kiwichild: Oh man, genestealer cult ftw! It was one of the first armies I ever saw way back on the day.

Thank you, its my second NMM based project so I am hoping that it will improve with time.

Im actually going for a very graphic novel style NMM on these, its not superbly blended, its actually trying to be more of an impacting contrast of colour.

I'm going to start out with some commenting. There is too many great stuff posted for me to mention everyone of them, so I'll just semi-randomly select some of them:

@Badgobbla: That space wolf is looking great. Nice and crisp painting :)
@SuavelyDunn: Test ork looks promising. Like the skin tone.
@Deusmex: Nice looking guardian squad, and posted fast as well. Someone has been doing some work in advance methinks ;)
@warflag: Love what you have done to your armies so far. Looking forward to seeing them expand in the tale.
@Discord: I hardly think that blue is so bad. I think it will turn out great.
@wizzard: Very sexy guardian there. Your level of painting is very high. An entire army painted like that would be stunning.
@Mr Feral: Great looking marine. Love the muted look you have going.

Now that the commenting has been done away with I'm going to put up some WIP's of my entry for this month. I have 8 hormagaunts in various stages of WiP. Hopefully I will have time to finish them along with 2 more for a full 100 points which is my target. If I fall short by the 2 gaunts it will be no biggie though since I am planning on painting a carnifex next month, which would fill up the points. But anyways, on to the pics:

Goodness me, haven't posted here in a while! Good to see a few new entries (Will update the list in a moment) and people planning out their work for the year (by no means obligatory, but a good idea).

For myself, I am being disciplined and finishing off the LAST years tale before I get my teeth into this one. I still have a few Epic Ork vehicles and a Warboss stand to finish off.

Saying that, I have assmbled my first month's work, a Devastation-class crusier-carrier and an Iconoclast-class destroyer.

/Fredmans, your Epic supplier (and unofficial specialist games marketing guru)

Aye, I've had a look on eBay and the Battle Company will have to do if all else fails. Right now I'm not looking to spend any money (not having any flowing in to the bank at the current time) but I have enough lying around to make a Whirlwind detachment, a Tactical detachment and - if I can bear to use the old plastics - a Land Speeder detachment. Add in two Jokers and I should be anle to afford to buy some stuff by the time I need it... ;)

I'll keep you in mind if FW decide not to start selling the Warhounds again!

@kiwichild: That limo conversion is ace! Very reminiscent of the classic models (or what I remember of them)

@sydbridges: That's a very ambitious plan! Best of luck.

@warflag: Those two armies go together so well. They both look like they're heading for the mosh pit.

Discord: You gotta be kidding, that blue is superb! Very rich and very smooth.

Now that's the spirit!

@gonzosbignose: I don't usually like NMM, but when you actually try to make it cartoony it works just fine!

@MistaGav: Love the base, you can just 3 colour the models and no one will notice when they're standing on something like that!

@wizzard: Very nice work, very clean bright colours.

@Dino: Nicely done! The red trim and hair complement the armour colour very well.

@misterboff: Good to see you're keeping up with the same unfailing schedule as last year!

@Adeptus Mechanicus: Great stuff so far - they look, in a word (well two words), Bad Moony. Nothing more to be said.

@someone2040: That picture! I think it was that guy that inspired me to get into 40K way back in the mid nineties.

@Norsehawk: As ever, you are combining celerity and quality with great aplomb!

LegendFX: Dude, you do know this is supposed to be for people who are slow at painting, right? :p If you paint your entire army in the first two weeks you're just gonna make the rest of us feel bad.

Are you sure you don't want to go with the red shoulders? It looks really good to me. If you mix in a bit of chainmail or burnished gold to the red you get a nice metallic red such as might be found on a car.

bert n ernie
13-08-2009, 10:56
Hah! Beat me to it RCgothic.
I was going to say the same. I think the red looks great. You could even add another red plate somewhere like the lower arm covers, or on the weapon to really set it off.
blazed99, perhaps you could show us a test mini of what you intend for comparison (not that I'm trying to convince you to change scheme or anything :D)

sydbridges

@blazed99

I actually had an all metallic army of necrons myself, but I got sick of the lack of color or contrast and ended up going back and painting the shoulders, forearms, upper legs, and faces red (which is a lot of work when you've already got around 100 models in total to go back and fix!). Obviously, I can't predict you'll feel the same way, but you may find that having some color makes the army look a little better in the long run. So, I agree with RCGothic & Bert n Ernie, although it is your army and if you prefer all metallic, then by all means.

My only warning about choosing red as the color is that if you use the green plastic pieces, I know from experience that you may receive some comments on your Christmas themed necrons.

blazed99
13-08-2009, 11:47
Thanks for the comments all, the reason i am sticking to just metallic is that i want the Treminator feel for my warriors.

My elites will have gold added to make them stand out and my Lords will have more colour.

I am a notoriously slow painter and tend to get bogged down in the detail and never finish a squad never mind an army.

Trying to keep the whole army as simple as possible so it may get done and get me back into enjoying painting which have not for over 15 years.

Anyways this is what i aiming for with the Warriors:

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/3893/necsample.jpg (http://img405.imageshack.us/i/necsample.jpg/)

Painting wise they are sprayed using Army Painter metallic, green parts painted Foundry 25c Bright Green and then FAPped with Strong Tone and then based.

This is my wip Lord slightly more colour ;)

as soon as i have a couple fo finished mini's that i'm happy with i'll post them on here.

trying to get a theme to carry through all of the mini's. want each squad to have there own story/colour scheme. so that they all have a unique feel to them and not just another space marine army.

Put me down for 1500 points worth of Genestealer Chaos Cult, using the Tyranids and Witchhunters adversaries lists.

Going for that old school look all the way, with original models. For the first month I guess I'll be doing a squad of purestrains, to decide on the basic look. Purple and pink, sounds like a good match with Slaanesh...

Hi there !

I just realised that, since I suscribed to the TO40KP I did not introduce myself, nor my army.
Apologies for the rudeness :)

So. I'm quite new on Warseer, and it will be the first Tale I will participate in.
I've been playing 40K for quite some years - and painting for quite some more. But I'm still quite green, as I only recently tried to improve what I do.
The only other army I've painted (and then, not even fully, I have to finish those while doing the Tale) is a medium sized (around 2K points) Tyranid army.

My army for this Tale is Renegade Imperial Guard.
It will be mainly Nurgle themed (after many months of doing red Tyranids, I needed something vastly different :D ).
It is quite of a challenge for my: I never did any serious conversion; I never painted a tank. Doing a mech guard where every single model will be converted is going to be, err... a novelty :D

As I do not have much time this month (I'm spending most of my painting time on my Tyranid) I decided to do a single model: a Leman Russ Battle Tank.
Well... As they say, there is a begining to everything :)

It is mostly done, but I'm saving the full pics for the actual submission thread.
I'll just post a sneack peek of the tank:

http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/7201/lemanrussreaperteaser.jpg

The lights are quite odd on the pic - especially, some parts are a lot greener than what they are in reality, and some parts are a lot less green.
Oh well, no big deal, I will try to make some better pics (in daylight !) for the submission thread :)

Hello, I´m Simon. You may remember me from such Tales of X as the two Carnage tales of X, where I failed to finish my Adeptuz Mekkanikuz Blood Axe Orks and managed to build 1.5k of Nurgle Renegade marines and the still running 2008/2009 Tale of 40k Painters here on Warseer where I´m almost finished with 1500 points of Varyngr (dwarvish for Squats). After finishing two rather conversion heavy armies (the Cadian leg chop on 86 Infantry models was a bit taxing), I´m going to build a Necron force. I´ve got some new paints I want to try out (some pots of Vallejo for a change) and some techniques to figure out (which I haven´t seen anywhere so far - it´s always fun to innovate a bit).

The first month will be nice and slow (and yes, I haven´t started yet), because those Varyngr need finishing up and I need to paint some models for a tournament with my CSM. So I´m just going to paint a Necron Lord for the first installment. Since the model is the leader of the Pharlanx and thus a focal point visually, I´ll play it safe and keep from using some of the techniques I want to use for the army. They´ll be tested out on some warriors in month 2 and - provided they work out - then applied throughout the army.

It's with great regret that I have to leave the 40K Tale before I've even begun.... lack of ££££ + needing more models = not a good start to the tale. I've already got all of my Empire army models which I'll be painting for the ToFP, so at least I can still participate in one of the Tales. Apologies to everyone - I was really looking forward to getting some 40K painted up, but the Money Gods say otherwise at the moment.

Indeed, that was definately the inspiration for my work. The only thing I changed was instead of a sword and scabbard on the left leg, I had some purity seals. I figure, he's got a Power Fist, what's he need a sword for anyway?

@someone2040 - Do you have any side shots of the guy with the grenade? How much work was it to make him kneeling like that?
The guy throwing the grenade (my favourite after my sergeant so far) was actually easy, because the kneeling legs are from the Devestator box I believe (I got them through bits, but I believe thats what it was advertised as). So there was actually very little conversion work to be done on him (Other than putting a bolter on a pistol hand).

The gun was the simplest thing, in fact :)

White undercoat; Heavy Badad Black wash; Red Gore on the red parts you want.
I did the highlights with Blood Red and Bronzed Flesh. I did not try to do any layering or smooth transition while highlighting.
After that, I finished the job with a light Badab Black wash - and, last but not least, my all time favorite, a heavy Gryphone Sepia wash. I find Gryphone Sepia to be just mind blowing - it's even more usefull in my opinion than Chestnut Ink !

Okay about time I got around to introducing myself and my various projects, apologies for my lateness in joining the party.

I've been into the hobby since the early nineties, I was the proud owner of an all metal infantry Imperial Guard army, unable to settle on any one squad I bought one of each and had each painted in a different colour... well when I painted any of them... I also had two large Epic Armies, Orks and Space Marines. This all got sold before I went to Uni as I just couldn't take them with me, after I rejoined the real world again I started picking up the odd bits and pieces and now I find myself with the beginnings of Space Marine, Ork and Imperial Epic armies. I'm not much of a player, I prefer the background and the hobby aspect to the gaming aspect, that said once all the armies are done I'm hoping to get a couple of games in with them.

So there are going to be three armies, the first is a Maledictor Space Marine army. This army will be based around the 3rd Company and it's supporting elements during it's deployment on Kholstrum.

The second army will be that of Warboss Krumdrun Mornutz, this is going to be a Blood Axe dominated force as that is the dominant clan in the Anargo sector, there's going to be a lot of scratch building and conversion work in this army... hopefully.

The third army is going to be an Imperial Army, that's Imperial Guard with Titan and maybe Imperial Navy support. I still need a few items for this force, so it may be mechanised or may not be, depends on if I can get the transports I need.

Anyway on to the WIP pictures, apologies that there are no earlier ones but I kind of just rushed ahead. Still quite a bit of work to do with all three armies but I'm actually hoping to finish them all this week.

A Maledictor Tactical Detachment with Captain.

Hy all. I'm new to this, so if i do something wrong, plz do correct me :)

Now, if i understand, i need to get listed, but since, as i sad, I'm doing this for the first time, i'll just make a post, saying i wont in :D

OK. to introduction: I'm Sparrawk, 18 years old, and I'll be doing the Imperial Guard army. I still don't know how big army I want, but around 200 - 300 point a month is my goal.

Also i wish best of luck too all :) & I'm looking forward to seeing what mighty armies u all are going to create... cheers

Fantastic camo there Spar666rawk, I'm equally impressed and jealous! Welcome to Warseer btw.

So far I've completed two squads out of three so I'm still confident I'll make the first deadline, The bases may have to fall by the wayside though.

Looking great there Zujara! The classic plaguebearers still looks horribly good.

Well, time to post some wip of my stuff. I will throw in some chaos raptors repainted, for points reasons. Because that which I show here tonight won´t bring many, but take up the most time this month.

`ere we go, as they roar: The Interceptor, first in my buggies and trukks car-park of my Orkzez.

http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc286/gewaltherrscher/DSC00150.jpg

It is one nights work, a good deal of hours, or two movies, so to say.
I am more than eager to find out how it looks finished ;)
However, it´s a lot of fun building it, and I take far less breaks than usual while working on it.

Good to see the thread grows well, btw.

Well then, happy painting everybody, i look forward to the 1st month´s results!

Cheers

Right folks, I'll update post #1 in a sec, do please check everything's correct!

Zujara: The Inquisitor came out great!

blazed99: See what you mean about the Terminator theme, but that red/orange Lord looks awesome and is, I fear, going to stick out like a sore thumb in a silver army. How about giving the Warriors red eyes to tie them together?

b3e: I think the "official" sallie scheme has changed so much over the years that you can safely paint them anything between black and scorpion green... That mini looks excellent by the way. Nice rimless shoulderpads!

trib75: Great work so far, the shading has come out well and I love the freehand!

Nuage: Looks like it'll be a great army. At least being Mechanised you'll have some chance to concentrate on the conversions. I like the sickly colour on the tank, and the zombie crewman is a great touch!

BoyMilla: Lovely DA, every bit what an Eldar model should be like.

someone2040: Nice squad, I like the guy with the extra clip!

Haarken: Hooray! Epic! The marines and Titan look good, but the Orks are my favourites. The round bases really suit them and those banners are great!

polymphus: Sounds good, if you already have 500 done should, I put you down for 1000 for the tale?

Spar666rawk: Don't worry, we won't bite. :p I'll put you down for 2500 for the moment, no worries if it works out a bit more or less.

Zujara: Plaguebearers are looking grand so far! What've you got on the bases? They look interesting!

warflag: That wagon looks awesome mate! I shall remember to refer to it if I ever need a General Lee for my Orks of Hazzard army that I will paint sometime in the next century, maybe.

Now, I finally managed to get started on my Chaos Fleet! I finished the last of my Epic Orks for last year's tale, so I got straight into painting Spaceships this afternoon. Without further ado:

http://images.fotopic.net/yzwn47.jpg

The Escort is a "completed" test mini (learned some lessons here so subsequent ships will be a bit different). I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and with how easy it was to paint.

The Cruiser (a Devastation-class named Aedes after a genus of disease-carrying mosquito) has the first few coats. It's perhaps a third of the way through. This is pretty quick work, though in future I'll be doing more conversions on cruisers.

polymphus: Sounds good, if you already have 500 done should, I put you down for 1000 for the tale?

Hmm...1250 maybe? After checking it seems 1750 is the more standard-sized game around here and it would give me room for all that fun kroot stuff I want to do. What's your position on Forgeworld? The last acquisition will probably be a Knarloc for display/friendly games.

@Boymilla: Gorgeous looking Dire Avenger, the colours are beautifully crisp.
@Daemonkin: I love the freehand chapter badge, think it's the first time I've actually seen anyone paint up Mantis Warriors, I can't wait to see their tiny brethren too.
@Nuage: From what I can see of it, the weathering on your looks beautiful.
@McMullet: Thanks for the comment. The cruiser looks brilliant, Personally I like the name, very nurgly.
@Blazed99: I have to say that it was a big shock when I scrolled down to see the red on your Lord, I can't wait to see the thing finished. I'm sure it's going to look amazing.
@Exploding Boy: Love the metal Cadians, that camoflage scheme looks amazing.
@Reaper of Souls: Very nice gaunts, the natural colours really suit them.
@Lazuli: Great beginnings on the NMM on your dreadnought.
@Badgobbla: Nice looking Wolves, how did you get the hazard stripes so straight?
@SuavelyDunn: Love the simplicity of your Ork scheme, I'm sure it'll look even more effective en masse.
@Discord: The blue on that horror is fantastic, the highlights have come out really well.
@inFelix: Great to see another epic army, the gold detailing really stands out.
@Sigur: It's great to see some Stunties survived being consumed by the Tyranids especially when they're painted so well.

Hi all...

I'll be painting 1500 points of Orks up over the next year or so and 1500 points of Space marines.
The orks will be being painted very quickly using the magic magic washes and will look thusly;
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj11/hwd48/orks/a%2011%2012%2008/PC110022.jpg
Maybe if I finish early which, according to my plan I should, I will use the remaining months to go over them and improve them a bit?

The marines I will be taking my time over but I have no photos to show for these just yet!

Gotta go,

Haarken :)

If only I was that good. :cries:

The symbol is a homemade decal from Bolter & Chainsword. The background was clear so it was either:

Prepaint a yellow cirlce before applying the decal and hope its the right size
Apply the decal and paint over it thus ensuring it stays on and try and get the paint in the correct areas
Transfer the image into photoshop and fill in yellow where required hoping the Photoshop plays ball and the yellow is the right shade

I tried option 3 but the decals were huge so opted for option 2.

I had to snip the decal in a few places to get it to fit around the curve of the pad. I then did a quick fill with darksun and mechrite on the yellow and red. I may also do it in the inner black.

Need to pull my finger out and get the squad finished.

Need to decide on a base colour also - brown to contrast the green, grey for an industrial/urban feel or something else.

A Little update to my dreadnought. Well he is mostly done I would say, I really like the contrast in the green, red and white which sort of goes well with the terminators. My Main question is as it is a venerable dreadnought by my list would you consider it a Ven Dread? If not then why and what could I do to add to it.

Also what other little details could I add to it just to make it that little bit better?

18-08-2009, 12:41
MistaGav: Not bad but if it was mine I would be tempted to give it a watered down wash of either devlan mud or gryhonne sepia to turn the white into a boney colour.

When I was younger I was given an 8 stage technique for doing deathwing bone on terminators by a GW staffer (sadly the staffers at my local do not have the capabilities to teach young 'uns the skills).

However with the new foundations and washes I can achieve almost the same effect in a fraction of the time - dheneb stone and devlan mud followed by a highlight on the edges.

To answer your question, personally i would buy a FW dark angel dread as a venerable and use the plastic ones as standard dreads but if you have not that option I would just add more purity seals to it, maybe some reinforced armour to represent the damage re-roll ability.

D.

MistaGav
18-08-2009, 14:14
I'm sort of digging the white more over the bleached bone colours in the codex. Seems to look like it suits them more plus it's very simplistic what I do. Just a Skull white undercoat, badab black wash and then skull white again over the top.
So Dhened stone > devlan mud > what highlight exactly?

As much as I would love the FW Dreads they are a bit out of my budget. Plus I'm weary of the time frame they take to arrive. I got 10 more terminators to do (tips on DWing them is helpful) and then maybe I'll look at a FW dread. I got a good idea for purity seals though on this current dread but what's the best material?

daemonkin
18-08-2009, 14:21
@MistaGav: Typically what I would do if dheneb, devlan and highlight with bleached bone but on my chaplain I used P3 (privateer press) bone to achieve the result. You can use bleached but I find that a little green for my tastes:
http://www.thousand-sons.co.uk/images/galleries/IMG_0935.JPG

I will probably go with a final highlight of bone and white mix with maybe a dot of pure white for an extreme highlight. If that becomes a little stark I would warm it with watered down sepia wash, maybe.

For deathwing I would strongly suggest trying this technique on a AOBR termie:
dheneb stone
devlan mud
edge with bleached bone
wet brush flat areas with bone
extreme edge with bone/white mix

I have done the same with my termie sarge for my mantis warriors in tranquility camo (yellow/black) using ochre, sepia, darksun and sunburst yellows. Will get pics up next month or sooner.

D.

MistaGav
18-08-2009, 19:35
Ok I'll give that a go tommorow and post my results. I'll also give a go at making the dread a little more 'venerable' which shouldn't be too hard.

trib75
18-08-2009, 21:54
mistagav love the dread mate another way you could do the bone is what I do , black undercoat, scorched brown, dheneb stone followed by a sepia wash and thats it bro. Hope that helps a bit. D and I used to teach young gamers how to paint when we worked for GW

Hi gang,

I've finished my 5 Nobz for this month, but I won't post them just yet...

I wanted to get them out of the way because I've got all of the new terrain to get made/painted, and I've just started Fallout 3 - which is very time consuming!

I've got a couple of WiP shots of one of the Nobz, and I hope I can get most of my terrain done quickly so that I can start on next month's Stormboyz mob.

Ok well I painted up a test AOBR Terminator model in that scheme you suggested daemonkin and well...I like it but there are two main issues.
1. I already have 10 termies and a dread in my old white scheme
2. I do prefer the white as I feel it suits the deathwing thing more.

My first post in the tail, so hello to all!

I'm in for 1k of crons, which might creap up to 1.5k depending on how well things go, but for now I'm staying low and making sure that at least something gets painted each month

(the pics are from a long time ago, the warrior was my test model). Month 1 is all about testing the water for me, so I've got a bit of everything: 3 scarab swarms (with scenic bases ofc), a warrior and a destroyer are on the cards to make sure the paint scheme looks good for everyone, so hopefully everything goes well

tell me what you think, and good luck to all who have entered!

Well, here I am with some more preview pictures. Now I've applied some paint to one Blood Angel, who's still not done. August is very busy indeed, and I'll be relieved when it's over. Unfortunately my Angels have been copping a bit of a cold shoulder as I've worked on other things. Some things just have to be prioritized unfortunately. At this stage, it'll probably depend on how much I get done during the week and weekend on my other projects, and then get my Angels done first week of September.
If not, the plan would be to get a full Tactical Squad done by the end of September then to buy back a joker, but let's hope it doesn't come to that.

My Blood Angels are a lot of work however. I've put multiple layers (the red is about 5-6) into this guy which I'd usually reserve for a character in fantasy. So at least I know I'm putting a lot of work into them to make them look ace.
