View Full Version : Despoiler's painting of the Space Hulk log

02-09-2009, 19:49
this morning it arrived! sheer nostalgic (tho revamped) bliss in a box.

so i thought where better to start showing my progress painting all this cast happiness than here.

no pics as of yet but they are on there way (once the camera has charged).

so far i have painted one terminator. so much to do!

02-09-2009, 21:34
a few ok pics of the first termi.

and a close up. the colour is more like the actual model.

sorry for the bad blurred pics better ones will be done tomorrow

Blurry or not I like it!

03-09-2009, 07:52
Hurrah! I logged on wondering if anyone has started a log and you have!

Mine arrived yesterday too, sadly I was not in so I just picked it up from the PO this morning. Pity I've a day of work ahead of me before I can get stuck in.

03-09-2009, 08:35
thanks for the comments. my brothers copy of the game also arrived so i'm also thinking of writing a few scenarios seeing as we have twice the amount of tiles.... and broodlords.

well like i promised some better pics of the the first terminator:

although i used natural light its yet another gloomy day here in nottingham so there still abit dark.

also the second terminator:

currantly painting the twin lightning claws termi or "brother Claudo".

04-09-2009, 06:14
Just got this myself, can't wait to see you paint up the rest of the box as those Terminators are looking great. :)

04-09-2009, 09:54
there more pics on the way. my camera died just as i took the first pic so im having to wait till its charged.

ive completed 'claudio' and am now working on 'omnio' (the temi with bionic eye looking at the scanner in his fist).

more pics hopefully soon.

05-09-2009, 16:21
update and picture time!

been at WH all day playing fantasy and joining in the odd game of life size space hulk.

but anyway pictures of 'claudo termi':

no more real progress today or tomorro as im away over the weekend.

07-09-2009, 19:42
no pics im afraid just a quick update.

ive finished 'omino' termi and now have started both assault cannon termi and the lib. photos hopefully tomorro.

also no college for the rest of the week means i can knuckle down and get alot done. so this week will have many updates.

07-09-2009, 23:56
Man I love the red you got there, Im trying to do something similar for my revamp (no pun intended) of my Blood angels.
Also the gold looks great, can I ask how you did the gold?

08-09-2009, 10:28
update time!

first a few pics:

'Omino' termi:

'Leon' termi

the red is really simple.
basecoat: Mechrite red
wash of devlan mud
first highlight: blood red on the raised areas
second highlight: blazing orange just on the edges

the gold is again simple.
basecoat: tin bitz
then a coat of shining gold
wash of devlan mud
single highlight of burnished gold

currantly working on the lib (as i could wait any longer to paint him) pics hopefully tonight.

08-09-2009, 14:00
wow 2 updates in a day and both with pics! i must be goin mad.

as promised its the librarian. so on with the pics!

i wanted to make the robes and book look alittle bit grimey and dirty. after all the aren't goin to be white still after all that fighting.

09-09-2009, 20:20
those of you who have been counting will see im now half way through the terminators (6 done 6 to go). so im going to turn my attention onto those genestealers.

not a great pic (kinda dark... something to do with that night thingy) but heres a test model for the stealers.

need comments on it as im not 100%

09-09-2009, 20:27
Looks pretty good - you have a nice classic paint scheme there on the the stealer...

What I would possibly suggest (although it may be the lighting...) would be a lighter blue, and more bone coloured claws perhaps...?

09-09-2009, 20:40
yeah i wanted the stealers to be more like the ones from the previous editions of the game and computer game (reminds self to try and find that on ebay later).

like i said the lightings bad the carapace is much brighter and the purple skins about three for four shades lighter. i will put some better ones up tomorro.

and you've highlighted what didn't sit right with me. the claws i knew something didn't seem right. i will try like you suggested to make then look boney. i went with the blackened alien claw look but with the brighter clour scheme it doesn't look as good.

10-09-2009, 09:45
new day new updates.

first better pics of the stealer (now with boney..bone)

and hurrah he now has another termi-eating friend as well

(oh a quick just-for-fun competion: whats wrong with the stealer above?)

also just as something else i decided for the first time (after how ever many years ive been a member) to actually change my Avatar.

as with everything i post C&C is welcome.

11-09-2009, 10:57
ok quick update.

no guesses for the quick question about the stealer i see.

well the answer:
its only got 5 limbs. (i wouldn't have noticed unless my brother hadnt pointed it out)

anyway curantly painted 5 stealers and working on anther three. pictures will be up later.

11-09-2009, 20:16
Looking really nice so far Despoiler. Some slightly better pics would be nice though! I like your highlights on the red, it's a bit subtler then the GW ones, and a bit less cartoony.

Anyhow, keep going, looks good so far!

11-09-2009, 22:26
thanks for the comments. yh it would be nice to get some better pics im going to ask sister to borrow her 10mp camera so i can get some better shots than my 5mp camera.

11-09-2009, 22:42
been messing with the space hulk 3E Tileset programme (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217976) working on an mission of epic size using two sets of tiles, two broodlords, a ton of objectives, two broodlords, 44 genestealers and did i mention two broodlords.

heres the map, as you can see the map has 4 floors, alot of genestealer entry points and it gets very busy indeed. play tests are needed tho.

The Hive

We found it. the main entrance to the hive, sealing it will slow genestealer movement considerably.
we are sending Squad Lorenzo and Squad Gideon to the area to assist Librarian Calistarius in sealing it.
the squads must set up the specially adapted powerfield generators at the marked points. however first the security grid must be disabled to unlock the blast doors on the lower level so we can access the main hive area.
Also there is a shrine located nearby the artifacts in that shrine must be recovered at all costs.
Being so close to the hive will mean a much higher amount of xenos. so keep vigilant.

A: protect the librarian whist he disables the security grid.
B: Recover the artifacts from the shrine
C: seal the Hive

Space marines:
One Squad containing one sergeant with power sword and storm bolter, one space marinewith heavy flamer, three space marines with power fist and storm bolter.
One Squad containing one sergeant with thunder hammer and storm shield, one space marine with assault cannon, three space marines with power fist and storm bolters.
One Librarian with force axe and storm bolter. (he starts in the security room marked A)

starts with 3 blips and gains 2 reinforcement blips each turn until the security grid goes down then they gain 4 reinforcement blips per turn till the BOTH powerfields are in place or until the game ends then it gets reduced to 1 reinforcement blip.

broodlords: once the security grid goes down the genestealer player gets use of two broodlords.

Special rules:
Downing the security grid: the Librarian is the only player who knows how to disable the grid. Each turn the libraian uses 2 action points to try and disable the grid. Role a dice on a role of 6 the grid has been deactivated. once deactivated open the blast door (marked D) this will remain open for the rest of the game.

Adjusted Power fields: treat as normal only due to the fact the powerfields are larger they can only be thrown 3 squares. Also due to the increased strength of the field they cannot be damaged or broken in anyway. they must be placed on the X marks

Disposal chutes: treat as normal at the start of the game. once the security grid goes down the chutes will shut down allowing the genestealer player to use them as access routes like ladders. stealers use 3 action points and can come out of any of the disposal chutes located on the map.

Victory: Space marines win if they seal the hive, obtain at least one of the three artifacts and exit with through to the space marine controlled area. anything else is genestealer victory.

14-09-2009, 10:41
ok picture time here are the 8 stealers ive painted so far:

for some reason the carapace looks grey its actually blue though like the previous pics.

16-09-2009, 12:25
a quick update for you all with alot of good (for once) pics.

currantly i have painted 5 termis, the lib, and a total of 11 genestealers which half way through the models (yay).

next of the list is the 'gideon' termi which is about 70% done.

finally got my hands on my sisters camera to take some better pics of the models so far.

first the terminators and librarian:

16-09-2009, 12:27

now a selection of genestealers

hopefully more pics of 'gideon' termi later

21-09-2009, 22:02
sorry for the lack of updates i haven't had much chance to undate my log recently. so quick update time:

finished 'gideon' termi
finished 'valencio' termi

also started a small imperial guard veteran force using goroul's experimental rules here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=220755&page=3)

so pictures of them hopefully will appear soon.

22-09-2009, 12:27
ok picture time its been a long tie comig but here are the pics of gideon that i promised (taken using my camera unforetunatly my sister took her's back)

'gideon' terminator:

next one of 'valancio' terminator:

and lastly something abit different, the first of my imperial vets:

hes only blue-tacked and wip at the moment but as you can see hes armed up with a M56 'smart gun' style heavy stubber. also you will note a space hulk style base as well.

im doing a squad of ten one with heavy stubber, one with flamer, 4 with lasguns and 4 with shotguns. though im waiting for a order from hasslefree for the weapons im counting as lasguns. (those familiar with the armoury pages will probably guess what ive ordered)

25-09-2009, 17:19
been away again for a few days but heres an update for those few who are still following this log.

1. ive begun painting 'deino' terminator
2. ive continued work on the imperial force (making the flamer guy and working on how to create a shotgun.
3. my order came in from hasslefree (along with sherbet sticks and a badge) came ten pulse rifles (yay).

despite the size (abit smaller than a lasgun) they work rather well as seen here in this (as you have come to expect) badly taken pic:

also you can see ive abandoned the space hulk style bases as they well looked terrible.

tonight im going hiking so no new progress till tomorrow i think

29-09-2009, 22:53
ok abit of an update and an idea i need advise on.

-'deino' coming along nicely
-finished modeling 6/10 vets

ive abandoned the pulse rifles as there small size didn't suit them and am goin with a conversion made from cut down lasguns and bolters ive seen some where previously.

also whist per-roosing around the web i found these (http://www.wargamesfactory.com/_product_16676/Zombie_Horde), which are not only cheaper that the gw ones but you get more of them.

and with any awesome idea at some point zombies or ninjas are involved.
and as you can see this time zombies take the spot light. im thinking plague flavour and having some sort of demon as the 'boss/leader/character)

the advice i need is this has anyone got this zombie set and if so how do they stand up to the gw equivilent. are they smaller or are they bout the same size.

30-09-2009, 18:30
again no pics but a quick update

'deino' termi is finished.

this leaves:
3/12 terminators (lorenzo, zael and goriel)
11/22 genestealers
The broodlord
2/3 objective markers (ive painted the C.A.T.)

finish modeling+painting my vet squad plus Sgt Dorian and melta-guy.

STOP! its zombie time! (i really, really couldn't resist...)

04-10-2009, 22:47
very quick update huge apoligies still no pics but heres a quick run down of whats happened since the last update:

painted 'deino' termi
painted 'zael' termi
started 'goriel' termi

finished constructing vet squad plus sgt Dorian and his 'weapon of faith' melta guy.

still no sign of the zombies so nothing on that front.

on that note ive also been drafting some rules for zombies still don't know whether to go with traditional slow but tough zombies or fast but relatively weak ones.

thats it for now

05-10-2009, 03:19
Ive seen a picture of them next to some GW models and there not too far off - think of them half way between LOTR/true 28mm and heroic scale 40K and you won't be far wrong. It depends what you want them for to be honest, but the GW are very fantasy and there bigger (albiet not much) then a cadian so you'd probably be better off with the

The termies look great, the highlights fantastic - definately looking forward to seeing more although can I ask what camera your using and what your set ups like? They seem a little dark in some photos.

05-10-2009, 12:56
they sound not to bad i was worried that they might be truescale making them alittle bit too small but if they are somewhere in the middle then that will do for me.

as for cameras and set up.

my cameras just a cheap one: Traveler dv5000 5mp HD video camera. its not great for phototaking and i find the anti-blur is well.... rubbish.

set up. purely just a couple of pieces of white card and lighting is... well bad in my room anyway.

very very basic. but then im no photographer.

06-10-2009, 10:56
Quick one for you. In the WD guide there's some really nice blending on the black power fists but they don't mention any dry brushing, just some line highlights and washes.

How is this effect achieved? Answers on a post card as it's getting me down.

06-10-2009, 11:28
personally im not using the guide. im simply drybrushing a few light layers of codex gray and giving it a wash of black to tone it down.

but you are right it would be great to kno how it was achieved. its really sutle. when i tryed it was either too gray or i got it too black. so i just went for the easy option :)

06-10-2009, 13:08
Drybrushing seems to give a rougher effect than in the pictures in the mag. I might try washing over what I've managed so far using Badas Black with Brother Leon and see what happens.

I'll upload a pic in a bit.

07-10-2009, 08:07
Kinda worked, however also seemed to just obscure my labours to some degree. Cameraphone does not a good closeup make. Going to find something better and upload a photo.

07-10-2009, 12:08
i should probably mention i don't use badas black i use watered down chaos black. which probaby means its alot thinner than the washes.

quick update:

'gorial' is 95% done.
(which leaves just lorenzo, 11 genestealers, the broodlord, dead space marine and chalice)

been working on zombie rules (gone with the traditional zombie i.e slow, tough with a chance of not being dead when you shoot it) also got a rather cool 'leader/boss' lined up as well. i will post those up either here or on the space hulk forum section at some point.

08-10-2009, 16:29
Post some pics. Curious about how you did Gorial compared to the guide version.

My scrappy Leon:

09-10-2009, 10:13
its not that scrappy. the black areas look fine in the photo, as does everywhere else. i really like the red as well.

i will get some photos up. im not at home at the moment but i will be tomorrow.

12-10-2009, 15:25
sorry bout the delay i got back much later than i thought i would. but never the less its picture time!

first up we have 'deino'

and 'goriel'

-'lorenzo' is still wip. the reds done but not alot else has happened on him.
-ive just had a mad clipping session to get the 11 genestealers, broodlord, chalice and dead termi off there sprues so i can undercoat them.

other projects.
-the vets have yet to have anything done with them but i am currantly making some lasguns into pulseriflely goodness using a method i saw on warseer quite a while ago.

-zombies no sign of them yet or of their leader so no progress.
-as for rules well they are on there way. just want to playtest them before anything goes up.

13-10-2009, 14:19
update time.

'lorenzo' is finished and heres a pic to prove it:

and with that the imperial forces are done. just the genestealers (well the remaining 11) and the broodlord to do (yes, yes and the objectives i know).

but more importantly i awoke this morning to find :

... in my postbox anyway.

on first glance there abit thinner and the details are finer but i think they are going to be fine.

14-10-2009, 11:20
no new progress on the genestealers as my black spray ran out (arrgh!) and its gong to be a few days before i can get anymore.

so i turned my attention to the zombiefolk.

ive made 12 (of 24) and there really nice models to put together. well anyway on with the pictures:

they are abit shorter and thinner than gw models but afterall they are dead, decaying and twisted by the warp so i would assume body mass and shape would be changed some what.

when placed next to a terminator they do make them look abit more truescale (the terminator that is)..

so all in all not bad i do what to add i brought these ones off ebay for a hugely reduced price of 5 (with free shipping).

18-10-2009, 21:48
Cool Blood Angels you've painted up, and yep, non-GW 28mm models for humans really fit into 40k. Especially since they brings forth the scary size of a lot of things. When you're not only surrounded by minis with heroical anatomics, suddenly you think "Wait a minute, I'm that small compared to that thing."
Good stuff. :)

19-10-2009, 14:27

Good stuff. :)

its also especially true when you compare them to things like carnifexes and tyrants.

anyways alittle update ive now got my zombie 'leader/boss' which is this guy (http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/pack.php?pack=510). hes a pretty nice model i also splashed out on the conversion kit as well. hes about a head taller than the terminators and ive chosen to give him the minigun and 'normal' arm leaving the rest for my bits box.

i will try to get my sisters camera for pics of him.

with a purchase of spray paint im back on track painting the rest of my models (then its just storing them im thinking of buying a sheet of this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/50mm-Camera-Case-Foam-Camcorder-Case-Foam-Packaging_W0QQitemZ370268430159QQcmdZViewItemQQptZ LH_DefaultDomain_3?hash=item5635b7df4f&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262) and making some trays for them which will then sit inside the SH box. (before anyone tells me i know battlefoam do a tray but including packaging its $56 to send it to england).

19-10-2009, 23:59
I love the look of those zombies, definately had my eye on them my self.

24-10-2009, 21:12
sorry bout the lack of progress ive been away for the week so nothing much has changed in the way of progress.

29-10-2009, 16:08
update time

no pics im afraid as ive lost the adapter for my camera and my sisters is unavailable.

-so far ive painted another 5 genestealers (6 remaining, the broodlord and objectives to go).

-i brought myself another 24 of the zombies (so i have 48 in total)

and well thats about it.

zombie rules testing is going good and i will post them shortly in the space hulk area of forums.

Different take with SH and zombies.... very interested in the play testing results!

01-11-2009, 17:00
Everything in here is fantastic! Unfortunately, I don't get SH until Christmas, but you've given me ideas. The zombies look awesome too, look like the slow and tough type.

01-11-2009, 22:13
@EmMeTt: well i hope at christmas you get as much enjoyment out of it as i have so far (i really can't wait to get a couple of games in with the zombies once the models are all painted). its also good to know that i have inspired and given someone ideas as well.

progress has been slow due to a certain bit of gta 4 dlc being released and being some what stuck to the xbox playing it

i was getting frustrated with genestealers (probably something to do with a horrible experience when i thought 72 genestealers in one army sounded cool... and then i began painting.....). so ive taken a break and finally painted my inquisitor scale eversor (the model was so awesome i had to buy it... just never got around to painting it).

As well as this i painted my first 6 zombies using mostly the washes and drybrushing (the detail is quite fine so i was worried about losing it under a few layers of paint). they've come out perfectly with a grimy, dirty and rough look which is perfect for a hoard of shambling, decomposing, dirty bodies.

again no pics due to lack of camera (at the moment anyway).

04-11-2009, 13:06
abit of a wordy update with pics.

(zombie hulk)
built the first 24 zombies (painted 12) and currantly looking for 24 more bases for the others.

(imperial vets)
finished modeling the 'lasguns'.

(space hulk)
painted the chalice and undercoated the remaining genestealers and broodlord.

this time its a zombie filled picture update:

well almost. heres the eversor i painted the other day.... now its zombie time:

04-11-2009, 13:10
group shot:

the boss (called 'The Dead Sentinel' until i can think of a better name)

and lastly with L4D2 coming soon thought i'd have some fun

C&C welcome as always

09-11-2009, 15:11
no comments... oh well.

quick update a theres not much to tell.

real life has been busy this week (pass plus, gf, rememberance day, etc) so progress has been slow.

half painted the remaining genestealers but its as far as i have got.

12-11-2009, 04:52
I'm looking forward to seeing that boss painted up. He reminds me of those end of level bosses in old video games, that I oh so love.

17-11-2009, 21:31
sorry bout the lack of progess ive been under the weather recently so painting has been the last thing on my mind. hopefully i will get back on track.

also been pondering about making something big. seeing some of the fantastic stratch built titans ive been wondering if i should make one for my 40k chaos force. ummmmmmmmmmmm....

07-06-2010, 21:24
sweet log, really like the terminators especially
