This is, without a doubt, the best product Games Workshop ever brought out.

blue and highlight the forehead chitin?

I still need to do the claws and will carefully dry brush the steel floor. Should I make the steel floor bright or dark?

I for one am seriously impressed. Claws I reckon should be vermin brown highlighted skull bone. Tongues red, and steel floor just dry brush boltgun metal, then lightly dry brush mithril silver with a bit of boltgun in it, so not too sheeny, then wash with mixture of 2/3 badab black and 1/3 asurmen blue if you have it.

I'm going to have to use ink for the marines. The lines are too fine. Wish I used more water for genestealers. Bought ice blue paint which helped highlight the faces more. I hope the bases will do the models justice.

Extremely decent. What colour did you do claws in the end? Go to bed now!

I've been a fantasy player for sometime, and this is my first exploration into 40k. Can anyone give me tips on how to paint my Marines and Stealers a timely yet quality fashion?

Thanks!

Also, has anybody thought about painting the Genestealers different colors, rather than the purple, or is there an actual reason?

Undercoated soldiers.

what did you use to undercoat?

Photographer
09-09-2009, 22:40
what did you use to undercoat?

Dry brush regal blue over black undercoat so there's a thin layer and black vaguely showing. Drybrush the thin layer of regal blue with regal blue/ spacewolf grey highlights. Finally add white to mixture and highlight edges.

It takes 4-5 layers more or less. Only highlight protruding muscles.
Don't get carried away with white. Use ink to tone down if too much highlighting.

I warn you this has ruined my thin paint brushes. Use GW paintbrush designed for undercoating for first two layers-then go small.

If you look carefully you can see patches of black.

Head-purple-finish with ice blue/white.

I love the way they look. The description of colours is the last I would have used so I am intrigued but cautious to start - I think I will try on some spare stealers from an old 2nd ed version first. I have every paint and wash so can always stick purple ink over them after if I feel the brushing looks too rough in real life. Your photos look amazing though.

Photographer
12-09-2009, 17:25
Thank you very much. I'm hoping to complete them all by next weekend. I find that once you do the heads, then everything falls into place and you don't notice the mistakes. Will do the small details when I have completed all of them.

This guy did a fantastic job-I suspect he used inks.

I've yet to finish assembling my genestealers yet. I have been using my painted up 2nd ed ones so far.

I don't think any mistakes or rough areas on an organic creature would be as noticeable as on the smooth plates of armour the marines have so is excuseable.

I'd agree - looks like he's drybrushed, shaded with ink, then highlighted by brushing and inked again. I'd say this because the highlights follow the raised portions of the model and not the outer edge of the chitin plates.

truly madly deeply...impressed with terminator!!! really exceeded expectations ;P

just two thoughts...we need to discuss how to layer up white...white is the ultimate highlight, start with astronomican grey (or spacewolf if you like for a bluish tinge) abd end in white. also, you did the gold yellow? needs more extreme highlights IMO.

anyway..one a day is the right approach.

Photographer, do you have any interest in photographing your final pieces in order to have them made into tiles for the map-making program?

Here is an example I made from one of your pics. It was nearly a top-down angle. (Which would be needed.)

I don't know what they would be used for, except maybe play-by-email games...

What color scheme are you using for the Genestealers?

Photographer
23-09-2009, 19:14
The dude at the store recommended this painting scheme. However, I wish I hadn't drybrushed but like all things regimented, they look fine.

Colonel Sander's Special Recipe:

First of all the genestealers are a bit messy and oily when you look closely. The camera always lies.

1. Undercoat models black
2. Dry brush regal blue-leave patches of black in the "nooks and cranies"

Highlight the highlights.

3. Dry brush again with regal blue
4. Add space wolf grey to regal blue
5. Add more space wolf grey
6. Highlight edges of back carapace space wolf grey
8. Head-dry brush head lichten purple
9. Dry brush again
10. Add space wolf grey to the purple
11. Another layer
12. Add white to ice blue and highlight cheecks and jaws.
13. Use white to highlight teeth and jaw and cheeck edges.
14. Use ink to clean up any mess on the body
15. Focus on the head because it takes attention away from the body.
16. All painting is drybrushed.

CRaster why not just photo your ( I presume unpainted) mini's from the right angle. Take them into Photoshop and make them grayscale then just color them in as needed in a seperate overlay layer.

Seems the fastest and easiest way to do it.

I dont think the white backgrounds are good as it fools the camera into making the picture too dark too see the models well. It might help to use the flash on the camera if the problem is the lighting.

Freaking awesome job! All the models look great, even better all together on the board.

How did you paint the Genestealer highlights? Drybrush or blending? I can't really tell. I quite like the paintjob on them, looks great.

Marines all look fantastic. The armor turned out excellent.

My only criticism is that some of the eyes look a wee bit sloppy and the storm shield is too boring for such an epic model!

How long did it take per model on average?

Again, great job. :chrome:

Photographer
11-12-2009, 14:49
Cheers! I did the eyes last and by that time I was impatient. Each marine took 3 hours to paint and the genestealers 45 mins. Dry brushed the aliens. I tried to do a good job on the shield but failed so i covered it with gold. The sergeant was the last to be painted and I just wanted to get the job done with.

In addition, I painted these models whilst I had swine flu and having not painted since 1999....

I just consider these guys to be chess pieces.

2. Dry brush regal blue-leave patches of black in the "nooks and cranies"

10. Add space wolf grey to the purple

I like that hold control rooms for two turns game type. how many control rooms?

Photographer
20-12-2009, 21:04
2 control rooms? From my experience, genestealers tend to focus and overwhelm one room then move onto the second.

HaunterV

2 control rooms? From my experience, genestealers tend to focus and overwhelm one room then move onto the second.

No, No. How I envision it is like this;

It's a High score gametype

There is something ridiculous like 10 control/objective rooms that need to be scanned for some reason or another
1 deployment zone
1 emergency exit. The marines get to a control room and only have to hold a control room for say 1d3-1 turns while they do some sort of info download then move onto the next one, and so on and so on until they either manage to scan all 10 rooms or they escape through the emergency exit

The 'stealers objective is solely to eliminate the marines.

Both sides would play and then switch roles and whoever managed to scan more rooms would be declared the winner.

Photographer
21-12-2009, 10:49
now that's genius!
