View Full Version : The Tale of 40K Painters, 2009-2010: Submissions thread #2! October 2009 WIP.

01-10-2009, 21:51
Please read this post before replying!

Autumn (or Spring for those of you in the southern hemisphere) is here, and, hot on it's tail is the next part of our... Tale. As happened the last two years, a lot of people forgot to post in the first month - but the way I see it, 77 of you did manage to post here and, of them, 57 managed to paint something. 11469 points altogether! Not bad for one month's work.

NOTE: For those of you who missed my post last month, I'm currently suffering from RSI and so I can't type much. For this reason I won't be able to answer as many questions as I'd like to, nor will I be able to post many comments/feedback on everyone else's work. Hopefully I'll be back up to speed soon.

Special thanks to Sigur this month who sorted out the spreadsheet for me!

For those of you who don’t know what the Tale of Painters is, look here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=212681). If you want to join in, then let me know! For the moment, please post in the previous working thread (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217717); from the 8th of October that thread will close, so reply to this one instead.

So, you're already signed up to the Tale of 40K Painters, and it's time to show off your minis for this month. Well, you're most of the way there, because this is the thread to do it! All I ask is that you post up pictures of what you have done this month, along with a total points cost, in the next SEVEN DAYS. There are some guidelines on what to include below, and you can use my post as a template if you like. If you don't post by the 7th of October you'll count as having played a "joker".

However: Please don't post anything else in this thread until the 8th of October! Feedback, questions and so on should be posted in the current working thread (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217717) until the 8th, when all submissions are due in and this thread morphs into a new working thread.

For your official monthly post, please try to follow the following guidelines:

You should include a description of each unit you have painted, including the number and type of models, and any upgrades or equipment they carry, followed by the total points cost of the unit. Please, DO NOT post the points costs of individual upgrades or models, as GW don’t like it and so neither, by extension, do the moderators. If you have painted more than one unit, give the total points cost of your monthly painting endeavours.

Next, please post photos of each unit you have painted, and of the army as a whole. Photos should be cropped or resized to around 1000 by 1000 pixels to avoid scrollbars and ensure the thread doesn’t take too long to load.
A note on pictures: Try not to overdo the photos. The Tale is about showing off your work, but try to do it concisely - if everyone posts 13 different angles of every model they paint, that means the whole thread becomes massive. Try to keep your monthly update to one post (6 pictures) and post links to any additional photos you wish to show - or better still, include a link to your painting log here if you have one, so that anyone viewing the thread who takes an interest can take a look and give you some feedback if they want to.

The rest of your post is up to you. You can say anything you like here, about what you enjoyed or found hard, what you were especially pleased with, etc., etc... Feel free to use this post (http://warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1870139&postcount=11) as a template for your update.

If you have to play a joker, please post saying so, and include a suitably amusing image. If you do not post within the next seven days, then you will automatically count as having jokered October.

Now, I don't know how many of you are keeping track of our "sister thread (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=212672)" (The Fantasy half of the Tale) but Doi came up with a great idea for giving feedback, which I think will be very useful at the start of the tale. (I think it was Doi. If I'm wrong then I'm very sorry.)

You see, with 136 armies in the tale it's going to take a long time to go through and comment on every single painter's work. The solution is simple: when you post describing your month's work, roll a dice. Say what you rolled, and then try to comment on everyone who rolled the same as you.

Of course there's nothing to stop you commenting on everything (or nothing, if you don't have the time) but this is a good idea and worth a try, I think. It'll be interesting to see who rolls a six every month, too. ;)

Thanks for reading all that. I look forward to seeing your work - good luck!

Sam (McMullet)

Harry has also posted a couple of good FAQs in the Fantasy tale thread, which are equally applicable here. I will shamelessly steal and repost them here (references to "200 points a month" simply mean a tenth of your army, so if you paint 1500 points altogether that means 150 a month):

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Is there any way to "buy back" a Joker later on in the tale?
A : Yes, just post an update with double points later on, and you'll get back your first joker.

misterboff's Deathskull Orks: September 2009 (die roll = 2)

2 Boyz mob Nobz w/Power Klaw, 'Eavy Armour and Bosspole
5 Stormboyz (inc. Nob w/Bosspole and 'Eavy Armour)

'...the Boneheadz family of Death Skulls once overran and plundered an Imperial penal colony, and wore fragments of convict clothing printed with black arrows for generations afterwards.' - Waaargh The Orks!

The Boyz mob Nobz use AoBR Nobz bodies with heads, Power Klaws and Sluggas from the Nobz kit, and Bosspoles from the Boyz kit. The Stormboyz were straight from the sprue. The Stormboy Nob has a Bosspole from the Nobz kit.

Nob Skin: Orkhide+Knarloc/Thraka/Camo
Ork Skin: Knarloc/Thraka/Camo
Grot Skin: Gretchin/Thraka/Camo
Face: Enchanted/Asurmen/Ice
Face: Astronomican/Badab/Skull
Teef: Dheneb/Ogryn/Bone
Eyes: Mechrite
Pants: Chaos/Badab/Adeptus Battlegrey
Top: Astronomican/Badab
Straps: Adeptus/Badab
Metal: Boltgun/Badab/Mithril

The first colour is the basecoat, the second is a wash and the third is a drybrush.

Piece of squig-cake. Simply painted Vomit Brown then covered with Citadel Sand straight from the Tub.

Highs: I think the Stormboy Nob and his little Grot buddy look cool, and I'm pleased with how the AoBR Nob conversions turned out.
Lows: Having to paint 750 points of Space Marines on the side for a tournament was a pain, but at least they're (nearly) out of the way now!

Next month I'm going to attempt 10 more Stormboyz and 5 Burna Boyz (to go with the 5 from last year's Tale).

(Check out the To40kP - Orks WIP thread in my sig)

Razcalking’s “Brothers Grimm” Space Wolves: October 2009

Unit 1: Dreadnought ValbjŲrn
Cost: 105 points

“Unit” 2: Rhino, upgraded with dozer blade.
Cost: 40 points

The Brothers Grimm have been separated from the main Space Wolves pack for centuries, battling Orks, Dark Eldar and other xenos forces in a mostly-forgotten but still strategically important part of the universe. Much of the fighting takes place on the dark sides of the system’s planets, and the Brothers have adapted, taking on the stalking aspect of the Wolf.

No real conversions here – a few Wolf bits here and there, took the dozer blade from a Razorback and left the Dreadnought’s legs un-armoured.

Going for a gritty, dark paint scheme. Always felt that the yellow and baby blue was a bit too happy for the Wolves. Watered-down Adeptus Battlegrey as the main armour paint with a black wash on the Rhino. The boltgun metal bits and skulls received a brown wash.

Highs: Fairly happy with these. I enjoy painting larger pieces.
Lows: None so far, but not looking forward to the skin tones and faces when I finally get to the Grey Hunters.

Dreadnought ValbjŲrn

Rhino #1

Time to start work on the core of the army so that I can have a Combat Patrol army for my battles against my students. Plan is to complete a 9-man Grey Hunters pack and a 5-man Skyclaws pack or some Fenrisian wolves.

Dumnorix's Evil Sunz (appr. 2000 points)

Boss Wazza: Warboss with power klaw, twin-linked shoota, 'eavy armour, cybork body, bosspole

4 Nobz:
Gnasha: 'eavy armour
Skull'ed: 'eavy armour
Badbreff: 'eavy armour, big choppa
Robo-Gob: 'eavy armour, big choppa, bosspole, cybork body (which will not technically be legal until I get my painboy done, but hey, I plan ahead :) )

Ammo Runt for whoever needs him the most

TOTAL SO FAR: 440 points

Come October I'll be playing in a sort of escalation league/campaign at my FLGS. I'm really looking forward to it, but the rules for round one are eally going to hurt my Speed Freeks: 400 points, only Troops and one HQ, no vehicles (so there goes my trukk), no S8+ (so there go my Klaws)... So I've written a tiny little backstory explaining the unfortunate Trukk-and-Klaw shortage:

Right! Lissen up, ya pansies! It's all well an good dat we found dis 'ere new world full a all sorts a gitz ta stomp, but first we gotz ta sort out dis problem, see? Ting iz, we'z all outta fuel! Da trukk won't start, da koptas won't fly, why, even boss Wazza's favrite klaw's run outta juice! When 'e findz out, 'e's gonna go spare! So you boyz better go an do sumfink bout it. Lucky fer you, da grotz 'ave gone an found dese enemy gitz wot we can stomp an kill an maybe nick their gas! 'Ere we go!

I just got the match-up list, and apparently those enemy gitz are Chaos Marines. And here's me with no Power Klaws... Oh dear...

Warboss Wazza is, of course, the AOBR warboss, with the addition of a nice big iron gob form the Nobz set. Wouldn't want is pretty face to be damaged, now, would he! ;) I've also reserved a spot on his base for an attack squig, which I'll be adding later.
Gnasha is a straight-from-the-box AOBR Nob.
Skull'ed is a slightly converted AOBR Nob, with a additional choppa and a back-mounted slugga from the Nobz set.
Badbreff and Robo-Gob are straight-from-the-Nobz-box Nobz. So is the ammo runt. Only he's not a Nob. He's an ammo runt.

Ork skin: Catachan Green, Devlan Mud Wash, Camo Green drybrush
Grot skin: Camo Green, Devlan Mud Wash
Metal: Boltgun Metal drybrush over black undercoat. There's also the occasional Tin Bitz detail.
Red metal: Overbrush metal with Mechrite Red, leaving plenty of scratches.
Brown stuff: Bestial Brown base, mostly with Devlan Mud Wash, but also several other washes and highlights as the mood struck me.
Red stuff: Bestial Brown highlighted with Mechrite Red, or Mechrite Red with a Devlan Mud wash for the slightly 'redder' areas, such as Wazza's loincloth.

Fine gravel painted Bestial Brown, Bleached Bone drybrush. I hate doing bases, so kept it simple.

Small but vicious do...ehm, attack squig.

Highs: Very small figure count means I had no problem finishing on time. Quite pleased about how they turned out, too.
Lows: Knowing I won't be using my warboss in my first battle due to Power Klaw-ban. Also dreading the 18 boyz I'll have to finish around the first week of October to get a fully painted 400 points army under the league rules.

And now... PICTURES!

Hwd's Orks

Army: Orks
This months total: 180
Army total: 360 (40 points up)
Dice Roll: 1

Another 20 Boys with the usual bunch of kit

As last month for the majority it's just Ork Boys straight from the Sprues
The heavy weapon boys and the nob have weapons from the SM devastators to show the loose background that the Orks follow round the Blood Angels nicking stuff...

As last month
Nothing special here, started from a black undercoat then;
Skin: Snot Green > Badab Black Wash
Silver: Chainmail > Badab Black Wash
Red: Foundation Red > Badab Black Wash
Brown: Bestial Brown > Badab Black Wash

Gone for a sand look to again fit with the BA theme (Baal and all that...)
Sand is glued on, sprayed white, washed Sepia and drybrushed Bubonic Brown and Golden Yellow

U]Still to do[/U]

Highs and Lows
Highs: Getting them done quickly so I had time to devote to my new pet wilf!

- the mob -

- a much requested close up -

As you can see from the close up, they don't look great individually but hopefully when I have a whole army looking like this it should start to come together!

Next month
I may have to play a 'planned' joker so I can make a decent start on Space Hulk before the christmas break; I want to take it back to my parents so my brother and I can take a trip to our past and waste many house playing Space Hulk!

This is the afore mentionned new pet wilf!
[let me know if this can't be put here and i'll take it down]

02-10-2009, 09:09
Hwd's Rainbow Warriors

Army: Space Marines from the Rainbow Warriors chapter
This months total: 210
Army total: 355
Dice Roll: 1

10 man tactical squad with flamer, missile launcher and powerfist for the sergeant

RTB01 (original plastic) marines!

Nothing special here, started from a black undercoat then;
Blue: Midnight blue > Layered Regal Bue > Space wolf grey line highlights
Silver: Chainmail > Badab Black Wash

Gone for a simple earth and manky slime approach.
Earth: Sand painted scorched brown and drybrushed kommando khahi
Slime: Dark Angels Green with a black wash and a couple of layers of gloss

Still to do
Army symbols need doing but I need some new non-gloopy white paint before I can do them.

Highs and Lows
Highs: More classic mini's complete
Lows: They took far far longer than I anticipated due to new distractions (see Ork post above!)

- Whole unit -

- Unit 'specialists'; missile launcher, sergeant and flamer -

- Details; missile launcher, powerfist, army symbol -

OK folks, first off I'm sorry for being so quiet recently but I've just moved hundreds of miles to become a student again so I've had the hassle of moving as well as trying to settle into a new town & being a student again. Secondly I've forgotten the data lead for my camera so just got the one photo taken off my phone at the moment. I will try & borrow a lead ASAP to post decent pictures.

UNIT: Tactical Squad with flamer & missile launcher

BACKGROUND/THEME: Brazen Claw army fighting on a snow world!

BUILD/CONVERSION: These are the AoBR marines straight from the box

PAINTING: Foundation Blue/Red in quarters, Asurmen Blue over the blue side then Badab Black over whole model. Blue is then Regal Blue with highlights of Enchanted & then Ice on most severe edges. Red is Scab, several coats of Blood, wash of Baal Red then severe edges with pink. Crests are Iyanden Darksun, Gryphion Sepia wash & then highlighted with a mix of Sunburst Yellow & White. Metal is Chainmail with a wash of Badab Black. Eyes are Dark Angels Green with highlight of Snot.

BASING: CMON snow bases using Bicarbonate of Soda

STILL TO DO: I might paint the arrows on the right side Blue when I get round to making up my own transfers for the army

HIGHS AND LOWS: Very happy with how these turned out although annoyed about the whole camera thing! Was also hoping to buy back a joker after my slow start but with moving it just hasn't happened. The red is a little annoying to paint too because of the number of coats that need applying to get anywhere near like a decent finish. Still, overall I'm very happy with how these came out, have been wanting to do a Marine army for years now & these are going to be my 'marquee' army where I can actually spend a decent amount of time on each model as there aren't so many of them

POINTS : 170

NEXT MONTH: A Dreadnought & 5 Man Assault Squad (which will bring my points back up)

DICE ROLL : 2 (forgot to bring any dice with me but used this - http://www.betweenwaters.com/probab/dice/dicemainD.html)

02-10-2009, 19:37

Again, I'm really busy with other projects so I need to play my second joker.

I have put together a big chunk of my Ork army though;

* Ghazghkull Thraka
* 2 Meganobz
* 14 Nobz
* 5 Big shootas
* 3 Rokkits
* 31 Slugga boyz
* 6 Stormboyz

I have also partially constructed the other two Stormboyz, three Killa Kanz and 16 Shoota boyz. I still have a Warboss, 3 Deffkoptas, 10 'Ard boyz and a Deff Dread to put together from scratch.

Aaand I've just ordered an extra Meganob from the GW site (plus some bases for the walkers and some extra 'Ard boy bitz).

I can't wait for the actual painting to start!

02-10-2009, 20:54
Again, my real life as a teacher, has gotten in the way of painting my Space Marines. So, I must throw in my final Joker.

I do have the following built though:
10 man Tactical squad
8 man TH/SS Terminator Squad
2 Dreadnoughts
2 Dakka Predators
2 MM/HF Landspeeders

Now on to the daunting challenge of painting them. I have also decided to change my Chapter to the Knights of Gryphonne...I like the Orange and black scheme and the chapter has hardly any background (allowing me to create my own as I go)

02-10-2009, 21:44
Wow, I'm done with this month entry.

Didn't thought I would be able to make it...
But fate stroke, and I did not go to work today (catching a cold may be beneficial, after all !)... So I spent my whole day basing, priming, and painting.
Oh, and beeing sick, too, but eh, stuff happen.

After last month "Hey it's the first time I paint a tank", I offer you, this month "Hey why not do 90% of the work on a single day ?"
The paint job IS rushed, some things I like, some I don't. But as it is the product of less than 6 hours of work (for the infantry, the chimera was painted a couple days ago over an evening), I'm quite content. I hope than in the months to come I will have more time to devote to the hobby :-/

Nuage Renegade Guard

Platoon command squad - 4 flamers & a Chimera multi laser / heavy bolter
115pts total, a bit less than what I should have done, but it compensate with the previous & the next month.

From Cadian & Zombi parts... Can't say it was easy to do. The hardest part was to get the hands right. I'm not sure of my sucess there.

Well, I wanted to do the Chimera as I did my LR... But in the end, the two tanks does not look alike AT ALL. I should stop painting on the spurr of the moment and try to be a bit more coherent. Meh, in a Nurgle army, that's not so bad.
The rust effect came a lot more red than what I wanted.
I tried to do some scriptings on the tank, and some symbols. Don't know if I like them.
The infantry was done, as I said, in one giant rush earlier today. I didn't had time to think about what i was doing. It's not so bad, but I do not think I would be able to do the same paintjob again ^^

Total Painted:
1 Leman Russ Battle Tank, with Heavy Bolter Sponson
1 Platoon Command Squad, with 4 flamers & a Chimera
Total: 295 pts

No dice roll for me, I will try to comment on most people job.
Feel free to comment on my work as you want, all comments & criticism is welcome :)

Pics are not very good... But hey, they where as rushed as the paintjob :p

13th Space Wolf Company

Units: 2 Blood Claws and 8 Grey Hunters

Note: I'm not entirly sure about the point totals becouse I don't own the space wolves codex yet and can't verifiy how much power weapons cost. Other wise i think i'm pretty spot on.

Blood Claws
Grey Hunters
Army Shot
Now for the dice roll: 3

I'll be taking a brake from painting space wolves as next month I hope to do some comission painting and I really don't have anything else to paint. Until then.

Zis: Daemons

Total Painting for september '09: 250 points
Total Army Size: 385
Dice Roll: 4

1 Bloodthirster

I did a few things on this fellow, like adding some armour plates on his leg, i repositioned both his arms. Also i did not really like the axe so i made it longer and changed some other stuff. Look and see for yourself :P

I used Vallejo game colours and some GW washes on him. As usual i am to lazy to mention them all.

The same lava theme as on my flamers.

Still to Do:

Hmm mabey a few touch ups on some things. but noting big.

Highs and Lows:

Highs: Always nice to finish a model.
Lows: Well i hate wings they took forever, and i am not really satisfied whit the horns.

I hope i can learn to take some better pictures in the coming months, but i hope these will be good enough for you all.

03-10-2009, 16:32
Unfortunately, I have to bail this month. I got a couple models done but not enough for the full points. I may be able to buy bac this joker is things go better this month, but for now: JOKER

03-10-2009, 18:13
SuavelyDunns Ork Horde

September 2009

The dice roll came up a 1 - typical!

Big Mek armed with Power Klaw (counts as), Kustom Force Field, 'eavy armour and Pet Attack Squig - 140 points

Month 1: Unit of Trukk Boyz. 12 Ork Boyz armed with Choppa & Slugga and lead by a nob. He is armed with a Choppa & Slugga. Ride in a Trukk (Big Shoota & Red Paint Job) - 137 points

Month 2: Big Mek armed with Power Klaw (counts as), Kustom Force Field, 'eavy armour and Pet Attack Squig - 140 points

Lead by The Big Mek, the warband is made up of a core of Trukk Boyz and other "invenshuns". Never one to miss an opportunity, anything that has been shot (or found...) by the Boyz is looted.

No conversions (as yet )

I use foundry paint system and armypainter dip. Go back & highlight the flesh. Nuff said.

Back 2 Base-IX bases and the orks are drilled & pinned to them. Add a bit of static grass and matt varnish and bob is your uncle.

On these figures, nothing.
Nob with Power Klaw for last month's unit.

Highs: Happy with the scheme. Lots of gluing this month, nearly finished Fighta conversion for ApORKalypse game later this month.
Lows: None!

Nob with Power Klaw.
Slugga Boyz & Trukk

Have fun!

03-10-2009, 18:39
Eleven horrors. Blue ones. I already complained about the photography on the fantasy side, so I won't go into that. There's five different shades in there now. That's 187 points, for a total of 357. If you're good, you'll notice I forgot to include one in the pic. Doesn't really matter, it's purplish, but even if I took a photo... :cries: Oh well, I like them in real life and that's what counts. Also, I don't have to paint any blue horrors anymore! Weee!

And on a lighter note, I painted another titan! The blue bits suffer a bit in translation *sigh*, but otherwise it's okay. 300 points more, now up to 600. Oh and McMullet, you forgot to include my titans into the opening post. Boo!

And here she (I assume titans are female, like ships?) is, with her mate from last month. Already makes some nice support for my marines.

Things get dicey: 3.

04-10-2009, 12:44

TOTAL ARMY SIZE: Roughly 360pts

Power Armoured Grey Knight Squad

Cityfight/Ruins entrenched Sisters of Battle.

No conversions, just straight outta the blisters and onto some resin bases.

Metal: Boltgun metal drybrush over Black undercoat, wash of Devlan Mud, Drybrush Chainmail, Mithril Silver, blackline with Badab Black and then a highlight of Mithril Silver.

Gold: Same way i did last months.

Parchment: As above.

Red: Blood Red, wash with Devlan Mud, Badab Black, highlight with Blood Red..

Resin bases, rybrushed with various greys and given a few earthy washes. Not happy with how drab they are, will work something out to liven them up in the future.

Nothing. Done!

Highs: Getting another unit done. In my 12 years of being in the hobby, this is the longest i've stuck with one army!
Lows: Paying almost $40 for two Psycannon armed models!

Sincere apologies about the photos this month, just could not get a decent shot.

04-10-2009, 16:31
It is with some regret that I'm not able to post anything this month. This means I'm jokering both Eldar and Orks. As I'm ahead on the Daemons and I would have been skipping this month with them I'm now just less ahead with them than I was. Clear as a 1:1 mix of earth and water. The only good thing is next month should give me a chance to catch up a bit.

04-10-2009, 18:45
ARMY : Craftworld Eldar 1500 points

UNIT : Rangers

BASING: Small lose stone for a rocky desert feel.

HIGHS : Trying to give them a desert look while maintaining the craftworld colours.

LOWS : Trying to remember the techniques and having to start sections over and over. Nearly complete, but just got to tidy them up and finish the gems.

POINTS : 114pts.

TOTAL POINTS : 114pts (joked first month)

NEXT : Wave serpent(s)

Sorry for the pic quality. Also I'm not on the roster in the first post.

05-10-2009, 00:39
ARMY : Space Marines

UNIT : Assault Terminators

BUILD/CONVERSION: out of the box terminators except for the sergeant who has Black Templar robes

PAINTING: blood red armor with blazing orange highlights.

BASING: just painted sand

STILL TO DO: all finished

HIGHS:got my termies done and started building some plastic Vanguards
LOWS: no lows this month

POINTS : 200
TOTAL POINTS : 395 of 2000

05-10-2009, 12:09
Joker, sorry fellas. It appears RL is catching up on me. I have to work with my research project at University (loads of meetings and conferences showing up, not to mention the experimental part) and the girl at home is demanding a cut in hobby time to compensate. I hope I'll be able to fix it until next month, but it is possible that I will have to skip out. I'll fire off jokers til they're out and then we'll just have to see.

05-10-2009, 13:27
sadly for the minis i was on a trip last week and all of my stuff is unfinished, so ill have to joker this month. but ill work really hard in October and ill get my joker back...

my stuff - here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218145)

05-10-2009, 13:53
Sorry guys this is just a space holder until I can get some pics up:

Kiwichild's Genestealer Cult

Army: Tyranids with IG+WH rules
This months total: 210 - 30
Army total: 180
Dice Roll: 1

10 Genestealer Hybrids (Sisters of Battle): Meltagun, Flamer and Imagifer = 160pts

Straight forward builds with a few arm swaps, mostly rt era ork arms and weapons. Minimal GS work to blend the swaps. The banner is plastic rod with a gobbo standard and some wire work.

Nothing special here, started from a black undercoat then;
Skin: Tallarn Flesh > old school Flesh wash > Bronzed Flesh > Elf Flesh > Ogryn Flesh wash
Carapace: Mordian Blue > Ultramarines Blue > Enchanted Blue > Asurmen Blue Wash
Grays: Adeptus Battlegrey > badab black wash > codex gray > fortress grey
Whites: Fortress grey > badab black wash > fortress grey > skull white
Claws/ Teeth: Tamiya Desert Yellow > old school Flesh wash > Tamiya Desert Yellow > bleached bone > Skull white
Eyes: Sunbursta Yellow > Red Glaze
Other odds and sods: just ask.

Sand and Woodland Scenics mix of turf. Adeptus Battlegray drybrushed up through to Fortress Gray with a couple of bitz and bobs thrown in for fun.

Still to do
Some touch-ups on the blues, meltagun and flamer tubing/cables and turf on the base

Highs and Lows
Highs: Had a great night of poker over the last weekend, won some funds for some bitz ordering.
Lows: Waking up after the weekend and noticing I got zero painting done. Playing catch up is not fun, Monday night was a marathon.

Pictures (It's dark outside, so I'll try for some better shots tomorrow)

05-10-2009, 18:33
Nice, i will be posting soon, do not fear the Orange is a rollin' through.

05-10-2009, 18:39
I will be posting later tonight if not tomorrow. Hive Fleet Behemoth Big Arsed Splinter Fleet reprezent!

05-10-2009, 23:53
McMullet's Chaos Spaceship Dude Things or Whatever:

October 2009

Unit 1: Hades-Class Heavy Cruiser Ascaris (200 points)

Unit 2: Iconoclast-Class Destroyer Tinea (30 points)

Painting last month: 230 points.

The bulk of the fleet is made up of cast-off ships, which are rather the worse for wear. So, the decision on a theme is made for me: A nurgle-based fleet. They won't be too Nurgley for the most part; I'll have 2 Daemonships (probably) and at least one other very dilapidated ship with the Mark of Nurgle, but everything else will just have the odd hole and lots of rust.

All of the ships are named after disease-causing agents (bacteria, viruses, fungi), parasites, or disease vectors. I spent several uncomfortable hours on Wikipedia hunting down cool Latin names for such things.

This month's ships are named Ascaris (genus of parasitic nematode worms) and Tinea (a general term for infections of the skin caused by fungi).

Standard, except for the fact I broke the aerial things of the Hades and had to glue them back on again. Twice.

Undercoat black
Wetbrush Tinny Tin
Drybrush boltgun metal
Splodge random blobs of Hammered Copper
Wash Badab Black
Details in Graveyard Earth
Details again in Bone
Wash Devlan Mud
Other details black, highlight mix of black and camo green
Parasite brown splodges for rust
Light drybrush all over with Khaki
(I think that's how I did it anyway....)

Paint bases black, add scenery feature that looks a lot like the ships' names.

I've been experimenting with different ways to write the names on the bases, so I have to decide which method I like then redo the others to match it.

Highs: Just about hanging in there, ships are looking OK.
Lows: I'm going to have to drop the Epic Marines as I want to concentrate on painting some 40K stuff to sell, as well as painting a few extra Epic Orks.

The fleet so far:

Feel free to check out my project log (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50634) for other pictures and information.

06-10-2009, 19:47
((Ok, here's the deal. I can't get a decent photo until the weekend. It is however a photo worth taking.

As it's Typhus about 90% done. More will be posted. Possibly even here once I get the photo and that sorted at the weekend.

My apologies. Thanks))

06-10-2009, 22:10

TOTAL ARMY SIZE: Roughly 605pts

Terminator Squad: Tychon

Pre Badab War with some elements of the army in their home world of Tranquility camoflage.

1 member of the squad is converted from Black Reach terminator. He was the only terminator to complete Mission 1 of Space Hulk when we played on the first night it was released. He was subsequently inducted into the DeathWatch.

Standard army colours, knarloc green and 2 washes of thraka green, metal was given a base of boltgun and matte medium, washed with badab black and highlighted with mithril silver. Some metal parts were given a medium wash of purple/green to bring some depth.

Standard for the army. brown foundation and sand. Until I decide on a look for the entire army this will suffice.

I am aware that having 2 heavy weapons in a 5 man squad is illegal so I have another model waiting to be detailed. I will add him to the points count for next month.

Highs: Following the Heavy Metal tutorial for crux terminatus painting, I had to switch some colours but overall I think it looks bang on.
Lows: I tried a green glaze on my captain. Didn't turn out too well! :wtf:

Anyway, on with the pics, they didn't turn out so well but I will come back and replace them, probably.

This month: Mk4 Tactical Squad.

Dice roll: 5

Terminator Squad Tychon

Operation: Tranquility

06-10-2009, 22:22
Irondog's Crimson Fists

Total Painting for September '09: 195 points
Total Army Size: 390 points
Die Roll: 6

Another Tactical Squad, this one led by Sergeant Hadren. Unit is armed with bolters, missile launcher, and flamer. Hadren is armed with a bolt pistol and powerfist.

No major conversions. You can check out the full project log here (http://www.irondogstudios.com/images/crimsonfists/mek_crimsonfists.html).

Same as last month. After priming the models black, I blocked in all the base colors. Regal Blue for the armor, Boltgun Metal for the metallic areas. Any areas that are going to be either bone, leather or parchment (skull icons, ammo pouches, and purity seals respectively) got a base of Bestial Brown. I also painted the eyes, lenses, and left hands with Blood Red.

After the base colors, I used Badab Black wash to shade the models.

After shading came the highlighting. Ultramarine Blue for the armor, Mithril Silver for the metallics, Snakebite Leather and Bubonic Brown for the leather areas, Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone for the skulls and purity seals.

The chapter insignia are waterslide transfers, softened with Solvaset so they mold to the curvature of the shoulder pad and then painted over. The tactical insignia on the opposite shoulders are freehand.

Gravel and pebbles glued down with PVA, then drybrushed with Bestial Brown, Bubonic Brown, and Bleached Bone

Still to Do:

Highs and Lows:
Highs: Watching the army come together...slowly, but surely. I also ironed out the whole dullcoat fiasco from last month. No issues anymore, I also fixed the previous squad to match the finish, see the group shot at the bottom.

Lows: Itching to do something other than the rank and file, but hey... all good things come to those who wait.

And last month one of you asked for a closeup of the sergeant's face. Well, here's a comparison shot of both.

Armageddon Steel Legion 450th Army Group
501st Armageddon Ork Hunters "Black Blades"

Points Painted: 115x2
Die Roll: 4

This is two Storm Trooper squads, 5 men each armed
with x2 Melta Guns and the Sgt has a power weapon.

Kit bash with Cats and Cads command and infantry squads

The idea with these Ork Hunters is they have been pulled from
the jungles to fight in the steel and concrete jungles of a hive
world to root out Orks in the under hive.

To go along with the units name I kept the blades black.
I'm trying to have no metal in the army, try to find anything
shinny in the field and you will find it painted very soon.

I don't like all the skin Cat models give so I went with a total
body camo, black t-shirts and gray pants. The camo is
rotting flesh "dots" on both the pants and skin

Gravel and pebbles glued down with PVA, then drybrushed with
rotten flesh

Still to Do:
Would still like to do some clean up.

red/winter's Power Armor Extravaganza!

October 2009

This month rw rolled a 6!

Unfortunately for the chaos gods I only spent time on Imperial Fists this month... (Well that's a lie but this is all I'm showing you now.)

Total Points for September: 260
Total Army Sizes:
Chaos: 145
Imperial Fists: 313
Grey Knights: 0

Total Points Painted: 458 (+58)

Chapter Master: Power Fist, Storm Bolter: 153 Pts.

Tactical Squad Sargent: Power Fist: 51 Pts.

Tactical Squad Trooper: 16 Pts.

Terminator: 40 Pts

Build/Conversions: Once again the Fists were stripped of their previous paint job for their new assignment. I used the Crimson Fists Pedro Kantor model for my chapter master with a GS'ed base (not happy with it). Everything else is oob.

Imperial Fists: Black Undercoat>Iyanden Darksun Basecoat>Gryphonne Sephia Wash>2-4Glazes of 1:1 Mix Iyanden to Golden Yellow
Mechrite Red Shoulders Highlighted with Blood Red.
Green Eye Lenses.

Basing: Graveyard Earth with OLD GW sand, washed with Devlan Mud.

Still to do: Finish Basing.

Highs: Still really enjoying the fists. Looking to round out the Tactical Squad soon. The terminators helmet came out fantastic imho. Very productive month, even got a plague marine test model finished. Guess you know what's coming next month!
Lows: Still need to finish the Ghazghkull conversion. Also i'm starting to think i want darker shadows on my fists.

All 4:

Termy Close-up:

Army Shot:

Not really happy with that last pic. Maybe I'll reshoot it if i find time. Had to squeeze this in before the deadline. Things came up with family and shoots and I forsee this month being not nearly as productive. As always C&C welcome, for the full update hit the sig.

07-10-2009, 08:10
Dear all

I'm having a bit of a mental month with work and relationship.

There will be an update coming from me, however, its a few days away yet, so sorry for the delay.

My name is Daniel and I am a wargamer

07-10-2009, 09:04
OK folks, comment time, as there aren't too many entries so far I'm just going to comment on everybodies stuff

@ misterboff - excellent stuff once again, I really love those Storm Boyz, your army is turning into a real Waaggh now!

@ razcalking - like the theme of the army & some nice minis to go with it too

@ Dumnorix - very nice Orks, gonna be harsh dealing with those CSM but strenght of numbers should hopefully carry you through until you can bring in the Klaws Burnas! (You could always try the rather un-Orky tactic of shooting though!)

@ hwd - nice Orks (I feel de ja vu here!) & a nice umm, Pig?! Cool old style marines too.

@ infelix - I've never been taken by epic as I'm more of a painter but that stuff is looking really nice, hmm....!

@ lonepilgrim & Thyrkill - nnooooo, last jokers already! Hope you guys manage to get stuff paited for next month & maybe buy a joker back somewhere along the way

@ Nuage - very nice Traiter Guard, loving that flamer dude to the right of the flag bearer in second picture

@ Dino - good to 'see' you again! Very nice stuff once more from you

@ Zujara - nice old school Fleshounds & the old school colour scheme is done very well

@ wizzard - excellent aspect warriors, very neat painting & bold colours just how aspects should be

@ zis - very nice Greater Deamon, loving those bases as well

@ SuavellyDunn - awsome Mek & Squig, really like those bases they're on too

@ Discord - well done on getting the blue horrors finished, i'm thinking you should've made them on changeable bases if you wanted to use them in both systems though :-P Cool titans too, that bone/stone/off white colour (whatever you want to call it!) is difficult to do well on big areas but you've managed it

@ Azarkhel - those GK are looking really nice but it's hard to make out in those pictures. I would suggest putting the camera down on a flat surface when you're taking pictures & maybe using the timer to get better pictures (just elevate the mini's or camera to line up with the lense), also try using the macro feature to take pictures up close (the flower jobby!)

@ Pasquill - very nice Rangers, the 'earthy'/desert look works really well & the wraithbone rifles are cool. What craftworld are you doing btw?

@ ChickenFunk - some nice looking Terminators & a very striking colour scheme, could benefit from some better pictures for us though if possible...

@ kiwichild - I would just make a new post with pictures when you get them rather than putting them in the placer as people will just forget about them (or just put a new post with a link directly to your post)

@ McMullet - well painted ships & nice idea with the naming, just hope some sort of international anti-terrorist organisation doesn't come busting into your house arresting you under suspicion of planning some crazy biological attack!

@ daemonkin - very nice looking Terminators, could we get some closer up shots at all? (especially of the Sergant as I think he looks very cool even though you say the glaze didn't work?)

@ Irondog - reading your painting 'guide' makes it sound so simple but those CF have come out amazing, the army is looking very good already. How is that Solvaset stuff? I need to print out my own transfers for my Brazen Claws at some point & been advised to get some of it to help with putting them on (when you make your own transfers they are apparently even less flexible than GW ones). How did you manage to get the cirlces on the tactical markings so umm, round, by freehand? Final question - can I see a photo of your backpacks, can see the metal from the front but I'm always interested in how people paint backpacks! (sad, I know!)

@ BigJon - nice looking stuff although the pictures aren't great, any chance of some better ones?

@ red/winter - very nice IF, the yellow is very bold & smooth, definately need to get the basing done to tie them all together though. I love that Sergant model top right of the first picture, I have him stashed somewhere & he almost inspired me to a IF army before my Claws won out!

jpobrich's Dark Angels and Orks

Die Roll: 1

Dark Angels
Total Painting for September '09: 106 points
Total Army Size: 106 points (7% of goal)

Two Deathwing Terminators armed with storm bolters and power fists.

No conversions, but I did make up some bases with the 40K basing kit.

Primed white using Krylon spray. Bone colour was done with basecoat of Deneb Stone and two or three thin coats of Bleached Bone and extreme edges of Skull white. Armour recesses were picked out using a mixture of Calthan Brown and Vomit Brown (guy on the left) or a wash of Gryphonne Sepia (guy on the right).

Gravel, medium and small basing slate, sand, resin bits. Primed GW Black. Painted Calthan Brown, highlighted Tausept Ochre and drybrushed Bleached Bone. The rims were painted Dark Flesh. Patches of static grass attached with blobs of wet Goblin Green paint.

Still to Do:
Deathwing transfers.

Highs and Lows:
Highs: I liked the way the bases came out. The guy on the right has a really dynamic pose (for a Terminator) that looks even better when he was based asymmetrically.

Lows: The Krylon spray didn't work as well as advertised. I was a bit disappointed to only get two Terminators done this month, but I was still working out my recipe for the armour.

Next Month:
Some more Terminators plus a Rhino if I get to it.

Total Painting for September '09: 54 points
Total Army Size: 60 points (6% of goal)

9 Slugga Boyz from AoBR.

No conversions.

Primed GW Black. For this batch, I tried basecoating with Orkhide Shade and working my way up to Goblin Green and some Scorpion Green for the final highlights. This took way too long and doesn't really show up the way I'd like. For the next batch, I'm going to basecoat with Knarloc Green and wash with Thraka Green to see if I can speed up the process a bit.

Gravel primed GW Black. Painted Calthan Brown, highlighted Tausept Ochre and drybrushed Bleached Bone. The rims were painted Dark Flesh.

Still to Do:
Add static grass to bases.

Highs and Lows:
Highs: These are the first Orks that I've painted in a very long time. I guess they came out okay. I enjoyed playing around with different green mixes for the skin.

Lows: Took way too long to do. Also, I'm trying to do an Evil Sunz army, and these guys seem a bit more like Goffs.

Next Month:
More Boyz and I might get to the Warboss.

Olean's classic genestealer chaos cult - September's painting

die roll: 4

Finally the ball is rolling! After a slow start (I had to joker August), I managed to finish two month's worth in September.

TOTAL PAINTING FOR SEPTEMBER: 320 POINTS (one joker buyback, please!)

BACKGROUND/THEME: As I am going for a classic genestealer chaos cult based on the army list and showcase in UK WD 116, I am using almost all classic models from the late 80's. It will contain various incantations of 'stealers, beastmen mutants, traitor guardsmen and perhaps some daemons - my local chapter of the Great Devourer has teamed up with Slaanesh for some hard core double action - it must be the "implant attacks" that they have in common?

Rules-wise I am using Tyranids together with the Adversaries list from Codex Witch Hunters - a perfect solution, I think.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Ten classic plastic genestealers, one patriarch, all straight up.

PAINTING:I always opt for quick solutions, being a father of three with minimal time for painting. As I wanted the classic 'stealer look, I used this method: First, the models were undercoated with grey spray primer, and drybrushed with white. Then, I "painted" the main areas with either Baal Red or Asurmen Blue wash, letting one colour dry thoroughly before doing the next. In just one layer, this gives a perfect "pale" late 80's look to the figures. Great success! The claws etc were done with Dheneb Stone and Devlan Mud wash. Done!

BASING: I used my standard basing: glue on mixed sand, then I paint over this with a mix of PVA glue, water and black paint. When thorougly dry I then drybrush this with white. The rims are painted with Calthan Brown.

STILL TO DO: A few spots of stray paint needs to be cleared up. Also, the tounges could use a different colour - suggestions?

Highs: Getting started, and seeing my painting plan go so quickly and smoothly.
Lows: Seeing how little spare time I actually have for painting nowadays...

The whole shebang

Genestealer and patriarch - closeups

Solvaset is pretty good stuff. The method I use goes a bit like this:

Step 1) After applying the waterslide transfer, use the corner of a paper towel to soak up any excess water. Then use the tip of a detail brush to gently nudge the decal where you want it. I often use a sharp hobby knife at this point to cut the decal in a couple of spots to make it lay a bit flatter on the curved surface of the shoulder pad. Kind of like cutting pizza, but you only cut about 2/3 of the way from the edge to the center.

Step 2) Once I have the decal laying pretty close to where I need it, I dab on the Solvaset and give it a few minutes to soften the decal film. The time to soften the film varies by manufacturer and even by print run. I've had some of the newer GW decal sheets take longer to soften than some older ones I had lying around. A good rule of thumb is to apply the Solvaset to a couple of figs, and then go perform step 1 on two more. By the time you finish, the solvaset should have done it's thing.

Step 3) Once the film is softened, take a detail brush and VERY GENTLY smooth out any wrinkles in the decal film. The film is very fragile at this point and tears extremely easily.

Step 4) Once the decal is completely dry, you may see a few wrinkles in the film that you missed. I go over these with the edge of a sharp hobby knife and remove them in the same way you remove mold lines from the plastic components. Once that's done, I use the decal film as a guide to paint over.

It's not a difficult process but it can be time consuming.

The round tactical markings are freehand. I start with a black circle in the middle of the shoulder pad and increase it's size with a detail brush, trying to keep it as close to circular as possible. Once I have it the right size, I paint a red circle along the outer edge. The red circle is a great guide, as you can see if you've got the circle right. After making sure it's as circular as I can get it, I clean up the red line, making sure it's a uniform width around the circumference of the circle. Then I paint the red arrow in the middle.

I'll see if I can get a picture of the backpacks up within the next couple of days.

Well well well, I'm afraid it looks like a joker from me this month. I don't really have much of an excuse, I just never seemed to get round to painting. Hopefully I can catch up this month (possibly even win the joker back). I was going to post an exciting picture to represent my failure, but sadly even a google image search on "joker -batman -ledger" turns up pictures almost exclusively from The Dark Knight, so here instead is a homemade one:

Hi all. Well another month comes and goes and here's my next submission. I've gone for my first unit of 5 Summoned Daemons. Picked Plaguebearers as they obviously fit in nicely with the 'Purged' colour scheme I have going on. I've also gone with a dreadnought for the army. For all the purists out there, I KNOW it's meant to be a Khornate dreadnought but I liked the model and wanted it in my army. Besides, anyone who knows me knows that I'm not exactly what you call a conformist and telling me I can't have something in my army only makes me more determined. Did I mention my middle name is 'Intractable'?

Points this month - 170
Dreadnought 105 and Plaguebearers 65

Army points painted so far - 430

If I haven't thanked people for their kind comments on my colour scheme then I formally do so now and hope to reciprocate this month.

See you next month

Last month I managed a no show and this month itīs a:
Real life has interefered, though Iīve got 8 Necron warriors almost done and 4 a bit further from finishing. Add my Lord and I should be able to put down 300+ points next month.

07-10-2009, 20:11
Evenus Rolled a 3!

Continuing from last months tale I have finished the three rhinos for the next few months worth of Thousand Sons squads.

Total from last month 250/2000
Total this month 150/2000
Total completed 400/2000

Assembly: Two rhino kits assembled as seen, one with a Thousand Sons Rhubric marine crew member. The third Rhino is converted from a vinidicator with the cannon removed and a covering created from Chaos spiky bits and green stuff. This model also includes a grrenstuffed chapter symbol on the rear.

Painting: Similar to the Terminators last month but with nmm gold on these models. Hulls have a very very light ice blue overbrush and the gold is scorched brown through bubonic brown with golden yellow and skull white mix highlights, followed by a sepia/brown 50/50 wash.
Yellow areas are tausept ochre, then iyanden darksun with golden yellow layers x4, finally a yellow wash.

Highs - Getting these finished.

Lows - I hate painting vehicles and found concentrating on these hard. I managed to finish off a unit of Nobs and Warboss to break up the tedium but think the rhinos look a little rushed as I forced myself to finish them.

Fredmans proudly presents:

Epic Ordo Malleus Inquisition Task Force:

Painted this month:
Grey Knight Order with 2 Support Dreadnoughts (425 points)

Painted in total: 425 points

Forgeworld Epic Grey Knights in Power Armour and Grey Knight Dreadnoughts. These were straight from the goody-bag. I was extremely careful with them (since they do break when a cat sneezes on them), and consequently banned cats from my hobby room (to my neighbour's cat's regret).

Epic miniatures are rewarding, but different to work with. For instance, metallics is a no-no (unless you are painting Necrons of course), because no matter what you will not be able to paint details discernible to the naked eye. So, I opted for a NMM approach without any NMM techniques. Instead I just switched metallics for greys, building from Codex Grey with a thin black ink wash up to pure Fortress Grey. For those with very keen eyes (or visitors to my paint log), I painted the order as two detachments. Therefore, both units have blue force weapons and red tabards. However, one detachment carry red weapons whereas the other carry black weapons. The same goes for the dreads.

Basing: I intend to use the same basing (but with a twist) for my Chaos army, but it is basically Graveyard Earth followed by a thick Khaki drybrush and finished with bone white fine drybrush.

Highs: It was extremely fun to work with such detailed 6mm miniatures.

Lows: Jokering my Chaos again. But as I said during the sign-up, I have recently become a father and I knew the first two months would see little or no hobby time. I have begun work on my Chaos force now, and hope to put some WIP:s up during the next couple of days.

Grey Knights

The whole Order (4 stands + 2 Dreads)

Next month: Grey Knight Land Raiders + Chaos

Case: 1500 pts Imperial Guard

Dice roll: 6

Army: IG
This month total: 130 pts
Army total: ~1400 pts

Assembled out of the box. Both guns are changable but the spare weapons are still unpainted.

I really should take time to learn using pigments. For this I just splashed some podwers from a Tamiya weathering kit on the tracks and lower sides.

Next month: Chimeras.

3! And some others, too. Just because I can.

Dino, nice, clean painting. Not sure about 13th company fluff, but it seems mighty suspect to me they don't at least scratch out the chaos stars off those bits of scavenged armour. ;)

wizzard, classic paint scheme and my favourite shooty and choppy aspects. Well done.

kiwichild, (imagine comment about pictures here). Seriously, I love me some hybrids. Interested to see how they've turned out.

McMullet, you still haven't added in my titans, you big meanie! :( Too bad about the marines, would those orks you're painting happen to be more infantry? You still need more ladz. I still need more. Really, everyone needs more 6mm orks. Awesome ships, too.

Jonahmaul, thanks. I figure that anyone refusing to play 40k due to my (completely legal) square bases isn't worth playing against anyway. The bases do double duty as second army facilitators and petty idjit detectors. :p

Evenus, I hear you on the painting vehicles bit. Regardless, it turned out nice. The chapter logo is a tad rough. Might have needed some additional smoothing out, but I'm sure it'll look just fine when running over some guardsmen.

Fredmans, you're a complete nutter for working with resin epic infantry, especially ones with spears. I'd have assumed they'd just fall apart when you even touch them with a paintbrush.

Aaand my daemons saw some action today. Used the disc herald I painted for fantasy and mounted him on a chariot* base for my HQ. Took out some Tau in an objective-grabbing mission. Flamers really shined, roasting some suits (including the general), stunning the silly transport that I couldn't hurt with my horrors, then charging in and breaking some firewarriors, which had decided to pile in on my horrors and kick their blue behinds instead of risking changeling confusion. Yes, that's right, the game involved some heavy tau/tzeentch daemon close assault fighting!

*You'll see my Tzeentch sorta-chariot next month on the fantasy side.

Phew! Just scraped in on time!

Boy Millaís Iyanden Spirit Host: September 2009

Dice Roll: 5

Unit: Farseer, Doom, Guide, Fortune, Runes of Witnessing, Spirit Stones
Cost: 160 POINTS

BUILD/CONVERSION: Nothin special, great model, so leave well alone!

PAINTING: Iíll just list colours used, if anyone wants to know technique etc please just ask!
YELLOW: Sunburst Yellow, Bad Moon Yellow, Skull White, Chestnut Ink, Dark Flesh.
GOLD: Burnished Gold, Devlan Mud.
BLUE: Regal Blue, UM Blue, SW Grey, Asurman Blue.
PURPLE: Liche Purple, VMC Fluorescent Pink, Skull White

BASING: As last month.

STILL TO DO: Might add some runes to the cloak, just to break up the yellow a bit. Varnish and add some static grass to base.

Highs: I love this model, Iíve had it for about 2 years waiting for some paint. Feels great to finally get it done!
Lows: Been a very busy RL month! Had hoped to crank out a couple of Warlocks too, but at least I made my points target!

PICTURES, (hastily taken)

NEXT MONTH: Not entirely sure yet, maybe Wraithlord and Warlocks? Maybe Wraithguard?

07-10-2009, 22:34
This month has just been too insane to get anything done. I could post half points on my DA Belial, but I am just going to Joker both of my armies and try and put time in on them over the next month.

The reason for this is that I'm going for an education degree so in addition to my normal college hours, I am in classrooms around my area observing and talking with teachers. Which often means days I normally have off, I put in a 7 hour day observing, or observe for half a day and then head to school for the rest of the day.

I did make some progress on some models, but nothing worth posting as an update yet.

So, double Joker for my armies.

07-10-2009, 22:55
I'm afraid it's been a bad month for me, and I have to joker.

07-10-2009, 23:24
I'm not a sixist, so comments for everyone!

@razcalking: A good start to your army - I'll be nipping into town today to buy the new Codex. I really like the darker grey, it's a lot more serious and fits well with your background.

@Dumnorix: Awesome Evil Sunz. The red and green look a lot better muted than bright. The AoBR Boyz aren't too bad to paint once you get going - I matched up the duplicate bodies in batches and got through them quite quickly.

@hwd: Another big mob of great looking Boyz. You should make a howdah for Wilf and use him as a Piggoth! (terrible I know...) I love the stripey beakies too.

@infelix: You've got quite a horde now, and your pink looks good (not too bright/shocking).

@Jonahmaul: Very nice. I like the snow bases, they really make the red/blue stand out.

@Nuage: I love the Chimera, and the paintjob on the Guardsmen is fantastic given how little time you spent on them.

@Dino: That's a great bit of kitbashing there. The hair and pelts are particularly well done.

@Zujara: Very traditional, and well painted. I like the stones on the bases too.

@wizzard: Two brilliant units. The shading on the armour plates looks very good.

@zis: Excellent job on your Bloodthirster. The position of the arms makes me think it's saying "Bring it on!".

@SuavelyDunn: Good looking Mek you've got there. I like the Evil Sunz style cables.

@Discord: Your Blue Horrors look very blue, which I like a lot. The twin titans look great too.

@Azarkhel: Even though your picture's not the best, they look fine to me. A nice contrast to your Sisters.

@Pasquill: Those Rangers look pretty well camoflaged to me. I like the bone coloured rifles.

@Chicken_Funk: Great job on the Terminators. I really like the heads, they look a bit sinister...

@McMullet: More very deatiled ships, the fleet's coming along nicely.

@daemonkin: Good job on the Terminators, the Sergeant really stands out.

@Irondog: Same unit, same high standard. The faces are amazing.

@BigJon: Rather unusual looking units you've got there, but very nice.

@red/winter: The yellow looks great, and the gold detailing goes very well.

@basilbrush: Lots more little Marines. The best part of a company in two months? Madness I say!

@jpobrich: Termies look good, as do your Orks. For my Ork skin I use Knarloc Green, then a Thraka Green wash, then a Camo Green drybrush (which is pretty quick/easy).

@olean: I love the SH colour scheme, and your Broodlord looks pretty menacing too.

@Bellarus666: Great work this month. The bases compliment the models nicely.

@Evenus: All of the Chaos bits give your Rhinos a good bit of variety.

@Fredmans: That is an insane amount of detail! The force weapons are awesome.

@Case: Looks fine to me. The camo is very well done too.

@BoyMilla: Very pretty. The purple details look very fitting.

08-10-2009, 00:23
Well being a late starter to this party it was inevitable something was going to happen, and it did - namely the ******* oils not drying. I tried putting them in front of the radiator, then varnishing them, and still, there wet as hell so they'll be left till next month and I'll throw in some other bits and bobs and try and do a double month. My BFG stuff has arrived so there next on the table really :D

Seeing as though I dont have anything to show, I dont see why I should get to roll a dice, therefore - comments for everyone!

@Misterboff - I think you need to add something a bit more to the bases just to bring them out, but I'm particularly taken by the stormboyz nob and his little gobbo rider :D

@Razcalking - I think you need to do more with the tanks. The base isnt really distinguishable from the model and it looks a little unfinished although I do see what your trying to do and it does fit the theme nicely.

@Dumnorix - Like the guy with the buzzsaw axe thingie, looking forward to seeing more for this little lot.

@HWD - Another Ork player! There look good, I like the plane flat sand look but I'd add some weathering and such to there trousers. Good call on the planned Joker although you've reminded me that my hulks under the bed and needs to be cracked open soon... PS Wilfs awesome
As for the marines, the power fist on the sarge needs its pattern neating up as it isnt as good as on the regular marines but otherwise good stuff.

@Infelix - The army shot looks excellent and I have a feeling at some point soon I'll break and pick up some epic gear. I like the dreadnought wheres that from?

@Jonahmaul - Shame about the pictures as it looks to be a very interesting and good looking color scheme. I hope once things have settled down you'll get us all some new ones :)

@Nuage - The intestines on the standard bearer are a little light for me, and I'm not entirely sure where your going with them as with the different uniforms they look a bit rag tag but again, its going to be interesting to see how these delevop and whether I'll need to add more flamers to my army to burn the zombie menace!

@Dino - Golds perfect. In fact everything your doing so far is great and spot on, and those areas which arent you'll quickly improve upon as the months role on.

@Zujara - Nice to see someone keeping it old school, definately looking forward to seeing what direction you take your soul grinder in.

@Wizzard - paint a little more of the Exarch scorpions armoir they he'll be spot on. I know I'm nitpicking now but its only because I'm jealous; I cant seem to be able to paint either of those two exarches for toffee :D

@Zis - He looks great, thje lava base really sets him off but the fur could do with being a tad darker.

Thas it for now, I'm nodding off at the keyboard, night night guys and well done to all

08-10-2009, 03:06
I'm such a lazy sot...

Razormasticatorís Hive Fleet Behemoth Big Ass Splinter Fleet:

Painted this month:
1 Zoanthrope + 1 SniperFex, plus 2 objective markers. (Sniper Fex is 153, Zoanthrope is 65)

Painted in total: 218 points

Self-Explanatory. I wanted a Sniperfex to start off with since I will have a shooty heavy army as it was going to be Nidzilla originally. I do have a buttload of gaunts though for the pending 5th edition codex in January 2010.

Well initially I was just going to quick fix and dip everything. I had sunk some coin in the army painter system prior to the start of this army. But when I started painting things I realized this scheme isnít all that difficult to paint. So here we go.

Prime with Army Painter Red Colour Primer. (Itís somewhat thick and thatís good no need to have a 1st prime coat this is my prime coat)

Next was the black on all the carapace, weapons and what cartilage etc. Do teeth in white, details in Vallejo Turquoise. Highlight the carapace with Hawk Turqoise

* I did a test with the objective markers prior to dipping both big bugs, I wanted to see how an ink wash looked on the red primer. I inked BAAL Red on 1 objective marker, left the other one the way it was then dipped them. Turns out I like the contrast the Dark Tone provides on the non ink washed one.

Dip in Army Painter Strong tone after basing is done. Then a coat of Testors Dullcoat.

Basing: Mix of ballast and tallus, painted black. Then a heavy dry brush of Scorched Brown, then a heavy dry brush of Graveyard Earth, then a heavy dry brush of Bleached Bone. Rim is Scorched Brown, Add static grass to taste.

Still to do: Fex needs the dip, Static Grass and Dullcoat. Zoanthrope needs the Static Grass and the Dullcoat as well as some minor touch ups for the areas where it got damaged.

Highs: I got a late start on these models since Grad School didnít end until Sept 26th.
But I began working on my next monthís contribution In addition to wrapping up this month.

Dropping my Zoanthrope after it had been fully painted and dipped.
Jokering my 1st month in the tale, and not really devoting as much time to my guard.

Objective Markers

Sniperfex pre dip
Next Month: 6 Warriors with mix of weapons. 15 Spine GauntsÖ yay my 1st troops choice

My Guard Contribution:
Ice Drakes Continued

Master of the Fleet, + Astropath.

60 Points.

I think I need to adjust the white balance on my camera, everything is way contrasty and blown out. My stuff looks better than this in the real world!!!!!

Finished them up for the most part. Still need some minor detail work on the master of the fleet. He needs static grass as well.
Not much else.

Next Month: Finish up some of the things I havenít finished from last years log. Things that were only 80% complete or so.

Maybe get a Commissar Painted and some other models. A command Squad etc.

08-10-2009, 05:54
My second joker in a row :cries:
With exams I just haven't had the time to finish my first unit yet. Definitely plan to have it done for next month and then buy back the jokers after that!

Couple of comments...
wizzard - love the colour on your Eldar, quite vivid and looking great.
daemonkin - Loving the Mantis Warriors. They're looking brilliant. Particularly the contrast of the captain in comparison with the rest of his squad.
Irondog - That's some really good armour colouring. One of the best Crimson Fist squads I've ever seen.
Fredmans - They are awesome epic models. I'm stunned by the amount of detail and realism you got onto something that size (and just happy to see epic knights)
Case - Nice camo :)
BoyMilla - Great paint job, particularly with the yellow. Really inspiring.

08-10-2009, 09:12
@ basilbrush - very nice looking epic stuff, they look a bit bright in the top photo but I think that's the lighting as they don't look that way in the bottom one

@ jpobrich - good stuff, especially those Deathwing, you've managed to paint them very smoothly which is impressive

@ olean - very good stuff, i love that classic colour scheme & that patriarch is awesome

@ irondog - thanks for the heads up on that stuff, need to sort myself out some sooner rather than later although i assumed that you would soak the transfers in the solvaset rather than water before applying so that's definately helpful

@ Bellarus - very nice stuff, the Purge colour scheme is very nice & you've made it look very good, bases look good too. I certainly have no objection to you using that Dreadnought in a Nurgle army as it's not overly Khornate but you could've at least shaved the Khorne symbol of it's damn head!!!

@ evenus - liking that tank a lot, the nmm has come out very well, i've never been brave enough to try it! How did you do the weathering please?

@ Fredmans - the grey really works well on those epic GK, I'm slowly coming over to the idea of painting epic figures the more that I see them in these tales!

@ case - very good tank but regarding the weathering I would say that if it ain't broke don't fix it! The weathering does look good on the tank. I looked at the examples of the Forgeworld weathering powder & it did not look good at all!

@ BoyMilla - absolutely gorgeous Farseer & big congratulations on getting that yellow so smooth & vibrant. Mo only slight criticism (and I mean slight!) it that I would've done the armour on the arms in blue similar to the helmet just to offset the yellow a bit but then this is just personal preference as the standard of painting is extremely high

@ razormasticator - I'm really interested in the dipping method so glad to see someone using it here, is something that I'm considering using in the future (probably for a VC WFB army though). It doesn't seem to have worked too well on the Carnifex though but think that might be the picutre? Stuff has come out very well though & seems life a very effective way to get an army painted quickly but to a good standard

08-10-2009, 10:09
Pffft, sorry for the late entry guys, had somethings to take care off. But I did my best for this month. Since I went a little over points last month, I decided to paint a ranger company this month. Last month was 12 points over, this month I fell 15 points short, so that works out perfectly I'd say.

Army: Flames of War - United States Army Rangers
This months total: 135
Army total: 300
Dice Roll: 3

US army Ranger Rifle/Machinegun company

I didnt change anything to be honest, but at a 15 mm scale, converting is a b*tch anyway.

Pants - Either Vallejo US field drab of Vallejo US dark green with a double Devlan Mudd wash
Leggings and shirts - Vallejo Khaki with a double devlan mudd wash
Shoes - Vallejo Flat Brown with a double devlan mudd wash
Flesh - Vallejo basic skinn with a double devlan mudd wash
Helmet - Vallejo Brown Violet with a double devlan mudd wash and a Vallejo US dark green drybrush
Webbings - Vallejo Flat earth

Gone for a simple earthy look, with some added bushes n such.
Earth: basecoated with Vallejo Chocolate Brown and drybrushed with GW Bleached bone.
Add some GFN shrubbery and some scorched grass and we're in business

Still to do
Nothing! Other then the 1200 points yet to come.

Highs and Lows
Highs: I'm glad I got it done.
Lows: Not a big fan of painting foot slogging infantry, but it had to be done.

And of course, the pictures:

Hey man, if you notice in my sea of text I mention that the Carnifex at time of photo was Pre-Dip. It was getting late and I wanted to get my update up. So I didnt dip it. I will post the final product in a day or so. With models as big as a Fex and Zoanthrope you really want to brush the stuff on anyways.

A dificult decision but one for the best, is that Im going to be pulling out of this.

My painting sessions are somewhat chaotic in that I paint loads of diferent things whenever I get the urge. Having a set pattern I thought would motivate me, but it has made painting a chore again.

Good luck everyone and I will be watching this with interest.

Sigur's 2nd Turan Irregulars - ca. 1000pts

Penal Squad - 80pts

TOTAL PAINTING for September: 80 Points

Due to having being exposed to increased attacks of Eldar and Chaos forces over the past 250 years and a then-weak PDF, the governor of Turan had to rely on recruiting abhumans and mercenaries to keeep the enemy at bay and the losses of lives among his citizens low enough not to risk an uprising. Thus, the 2nd Irregulars (there never was a 1st Irregulars but due to the troops' nature, they were not allowed being called the 1st) were founded.

The regiment mainly consists of troops many other regiments don't want in their ranks like abhumans, hive scum and sanctioned mutants.

Catachan bodies, plastic beastmen heads, some additional bitz from necromunda/catachan command box/beastmen sprues. 6 Beastmen were done back when the beastmen box was released in 2004 or when it was, the rest was built last month. That was kinda fun, yeah. Arbitrator is the old Catachan Lieutenant. I know, the equipment isn't quite WYSIWYG but I think the miniature is genuinely fitting for the job and as there are no other options for how to equip the overseer, there should be no issues with that.

Updated colour scheme of my original Catachan army. Fiddled around endlessly on the skin of the beastmen. It looked really good until i applied the Devlan Mud Wash. Now it kinda looks like someone used graveyard earth base and highlighted with kommando khaki and then slapped some of this icky dip stuff over it. May I say that they look better in real life? :) It's very hard to see in the pictures but they're all having a read triangle tatoo'ed onto their left arm (indicating that they are a penal squad) and "14" in black letters in the triangle, so they are of the 14th penal squad.

GS to make the bases a bit uneven, 2 kinds of sand, the occational pebble for rocks, vines made from GS, some small wood chips. Static grass will be added.

Some deatils on the Overseer, some neatening up on the pouches on some of the beastmen.

Highs: Not too many again.
Lows: Can't be bothered with painting IG much at the moment or painting much at all. Stuff was also slowed down by some real life stuffs and the fact that I moved out of the flat I just moved into 2 months ago.

Tune in again next month when...

....sigur is lazy again
....and paints Straken!
....as a Squat! In Exo-Armour!

srr guys but I got to use one of my jokers

why?: I can not find the god dam camera, but no worries, I'll earn it back next month becaise I painted over a 1000 points this month

08-10-2009, 13:28
@Sigur: Those conversions work really well mate. Keep it up!

08-10-2009, 13:40
and now for some comments.. .for the 2's and a few others that caught my eye.

@ mistaboff... sweet deathskullz... as always your orks look great, I love that soft tone work you have going on the metals. Correct me if I am wrong but this is the same army you were working on in the previous tale no?

@ HDW, nice RT era marines. I fondly remember buying my first box.

@ nuage.... great stuff there. well painted and you pulled off the renegade look to a tee!

@ Wizzard... excellent high quality eldar man!

@ pasquill... very nice Rangers, and i really like the colors. the rifles are exceptional.

@ big john.... they look great man! Needed a break from the Steel Legion did ye?

@ basilbrush... very good looking Ultras... epic is challenge to paint in my opinion.

@ case... good looking hellhound so far man. just need to wrap up some detail work and your good to go.

@ boymilla... that farseer is beautiful man... a work of art. So well done. I am jealous.

@ sigur, great stuff from you as always. those are some ace conversions and your camo pattern is very convincing.

If I didn't comment on you this month I will try to get you next month. There was only like two others who had 2's this month so I just commented on additional things that caught my fancy.

08-10-2009, 15:44
@ Legendfx - as I said last month it's very nice to see some non GW stuff for a change and those Rangers are excellent so I'm glad you got them done too!

@ kiwichild - good link to the placer & some very nice stuff too although I think the bases need something more than just the green paint (or are those not finished?)

@ razormasticator - me bad!

@ sigur - good theme for the army & some excellent painting to boot, I particularly like that 'Beastguard' with the helmet on, very cool! Are you going the whole army in this theme or will it be mix & matched?

08-10-2009, 15:56
coz i was way to lazy to make pictures i will take my first joker, though my assault squad is ready painted... i will show them next month together with my assault temrinator squad.
i guess then i will have earned my submission points back!:chrome:

but as i can remember we are supposed to present a joker picture when taking a wildcard. here is mine i hope no one used it before me:

08-10-2009, 18:13
@ razormasticator

Thanks, as for my Steel Legion they are not forgotten and you will be seeing them
very very soon. I just wanted something to break up the force and since Ork Hunters
are apart of the Steel Legion I thought they would fit right in, you'll be seeing other
Armageddon units show up as well. I also needed away to make some Storm Troopers/
Vets stand out with Melta Guns.

Really nice, I like the ab-human regiments and remember when the IG was full of
beastmen, rattlings and Orgyn.

3rd Company Maledictor Adeptus Astartes.

Total Painting for August: 350pts
Total Army Size: 700pts
Die Roll: 3

Unit: Devastator Squads 9 & 10 of the 3rd Company Maledictors Adeptus Astartes supported by the dreadnoughts Brother Nerus and Brother Tynus

The Maledictors are a chapter of the Adeptus Astartes that are primarily based within the Anargo Sector of the Ultima Segmentum. For 5,000 years they have battled the enemies of Mankind across the Sector and beyond. The chapter is a fleet based chapter, endlessly crossing the stars to hunt down the enemies of Man. Their flagship is the Denunciator a battle barge outfitted by the Adeptus Mechanicus as a dedicated assault ship and centre of the chapter. The chapter prefers to keep its' distance from the Imperial authorities and are far from cooperative at the best of times. In battle the Maledictors show little remorse in cutting down those they see as opposing the Lord of Mankind and will curse those who do, as they march upon their enemies in war.

The Maledictors responded to the Ork attack on the Vinaca Chain by sending three of their Battle Companies in to the warzone, the 3rd Company led by Captain Silvanus were the first to respond to their summons, the Strike Cruiser Invioble and the frigates Sword of Anger and Spear of Anargo slipped through the Ork picket line and dropped the entire 3rd Company on to the fortress world of Kholstrum. The 3rd Company spent the first weeks of it's deployment stabilising the PDF lines and bolstering it's crumbling morale.

Build/Conversions: The stands were an Ebay buy and thus they came welded into their bases so rather than arduously chop them out I left them in there. No conversions on these guys.

Painting: Black basecoat > Adeptus Battle Grey > Codex Grey. Blood Red and Skull White detailing. Black Ink wash.

Basing: GW Sand > Very watered down chaos black > Kommando Khaki > Bleached Bone > Static Grass.

Still to do: May lighten the whole lot up.

Highs: Got these done fairly quickly, and they were really fun to paint.
Lows: None. These were lovely to paint.

08-10-2009, 20:45
Unfortunately going to have to Joker this month i am afraid.

Cordilan 63rd Imperial Guard Mechanised Infantry Regiment & Support.

Total Painting for August: 250pts
Total Army Size: 1100pts
Die Roll: 3

Unit: A Company, 1st Battalion, Cordilan 63rd Imperial Guard Mechanised Infantry Regiment

Background/Theme: The Cordilan 63rd Imperial Guard Mechanised Infantry Regiment were raised three months before the Kholstrum Campaign began and were en-route to the Castellan sub-sector on Garrison duty when the Departmento Munitorum rerouted them as one of the formations ready for duty. As one of the first Imperial formations to land on Kholstrum the Cordilan 63rd were immediately thrust into relieving the battered PDF defenders on the Celsian Line.

Build/Conversions: Straight from the box, no modifications or conversions.

Painting: Black basecoat > Goblin Green > Scorpion Green. Bronzed Flesh. Boltgun Metal. Black Ink Wash.

Basing: GW Sand > Very watered down chaos black > Kommando Khaki > Bleached Bone > Static Grass.

Still to do: Tidy up the bases.

Highs: Love how these guys look ranked up, so incredibly satisfying to see them done.
Lows: Two days before the painting thread opened I realised that not only had I not began painting them but that I had twice as many to paint. Still got them done in the end.

Mornutz's Bloody Mekanized Marauders

Total Painting for August: 280pts
Total Army Size: 630pts
Die Roll: 3

Unit: Battlewagonz.

The Lightnin Mekanized Brigade of Krumdun Mornutz is the heart of Mornutz's Mekanized Marauders a large warband within the Warhorde of Warlord Skargor Uzgub. A predominately Blood Axe Warhorde it is fiercely and unusually loyal to the command of the Great Warlord Morzkraga. Warboss Mornutz fanatically emulates his Imperial adversaries, studying their tactics and equipment in a most un-orky manner, it is for this reason that his Warband is heavily mechanised and adopts a very loose combined arms approach.

Build/Conversions: All but one of these is based on the skull battlewagon, I've chopped them up, added plasticard and just generally tried to make them a little less homogenous. Nothing special really.

Painting: Black undercoat > Adeptus Battle Grey > Codex Grey. Scab Red > Blood Red. Skull White/ Boltgun Metal detailing. Black Ink Wash.

Basing: N/A

Still to do: Possible base them up.

Highs: They look great with the Warband I did last month, really happy with the conversions.
Lows: They didn't come out as nice as I had hoped, really should have spent more time on them.

09-10-2009, 08:28
Comming along quite nice there Haarken, but one thing left me wondering. Why are the marine infantry glued to straight bases, while the orks are on round ones?

09-10-2009, 08:46
Great to see so many Epic project logs in progress. As I have signed up for an epic project as well as my 40k one and have yet to put brush to 6mm model but I have already got 600+ points painted and was going for 400 in 40k after 2 months so I may be able to build a bank up of months in which to achieve my epic log.

Failing that - Emperor titan and 4 formations of terminators should cover it!

Will post comments at a later date.

Officially pulling my second joker out since this month has not been too good for me. And the future of my tyranids for this years tale isn't looking to great, since the skaven are almost upon us, and skaven being my first an all time favourite WH army gives me a little bt of a motivational problem. But I will try to pull through...

09-10-2009, 12:18
Okay so comments for my fellow 'talers' who couldn't make a save for a terminator (i.e. rolled a 1)

@Zujan; Loving the classic mini's and matching colour scheme! Bring on more classic mini's is what I say...
@Suavely Dunn; Second month commenting on your stuff and again it's looking great! You do seem to have missed the Big Mek's eyes though...
@kiwichild; again second month on the trot I'm commenting on more fantastic classic mini's you have painted!
@jpobritch; Looking good on both counts. Don't worry about the bits not looking overly Evil Sunz, just give them a trukk with a b****in' paintjob and everyone will know

Well that seems to be it! Not many people rolling 1's, lucky gitz...

Response to comments
@misterboff; Thanks mate! I’ve already started planning a costume to turn him into a knight of Pigmar (see below), assuming of course the missus will let me…
@GomezAddams; Weathering and better detailing will come later. For now it’s all about getting the Orks on the table so I can finally use them, having bought them 2 or 3 years ago!
The serge’s rainbow will get fixed once I buy a new permanent marker
@Jonahmaul; Cheers Mate, no Orks next month though, only SPACE HULK, wooh!

Wait for me!!

This week was super busy and I had to miss a deadline so I decided to miss the TO40k deadline rather than the work deadline. Still, hopefully these will do though they indeed are a tad late.

6 Plaguebearers with Icon and an Instrument - 120 points
so met the 100 point goal nicely.

Army total at the moment: 225

Rolled a three.

Painting them: Painted them, highlighted them, brushed the dip on, brushed matte varnish on and last painted the swords.

Still to do: finish the bases.

All of them:

Some comments for this month’s 6s:

@ Paquill: Nice basing, and the desert theme comes through well. Tough to balance with the bright blue and stark white, so I like the ones without the helmets better.

@ Chicken_Funk: Bit hard to see the details, but I like the colour scheme – the blazing orange highlights add a lot.

@ Irondog: Outstanding work – armour highlights especially are incredible. Freehanding those Tactical symbols seems impossible to me at my current skill level – they look great.

@ red/winter: As you mentioned, the Terminator helmet looks great here. I’d agree with you that a bit darker shadowing would help the yellow pop a bit more.

@ Case: Camo patterning looks very nice here. So are you only one month away from being done?

Master of Muppets

Army: Master of Muppets Black Templars

Total Painting for September 09: 265pts as modeled
Total Amount of Army painted(or redone): 480pts

Rewarded for valor on the battlefield my Land Raider Crusader :The Emperor's Right Cross gets painted standard as a Crusader comes

This came to me prebuilt as a xmas present long ago it has the forgeworld Imperial Fist doors. I really like them and keep my Templars army as a combo type of look. (My neophytes are actually other Space Marines with that type of color scheme. There was a large amount of repair work done on this as will be done on all my vehicles. (The great crash off my bookcase of 08)

Primed black and left to sit. I ended up keeping with a slight adjustment on the BT color theme. I highlighted a lot of symbols and goodies in either silver or gold this rich gold I got from Vallejo paints. A decent amount of time went into this and this I can proudly state the model I'm most proud of yet. The white streaks on the Crusader give it some individuality. The chapter symbols on the white part were skillfully painted by Irondog. (But I did the wiring around the headlights myself.)

Still To Do

Obviously I don't have the marine on the turret part done yet so that has some doing. I also am going to see about getting the name of the Land Raider up on it at some point. And assembling its Sister Crusader: The Emperor's Left Hook.

Highs and Lows

Highs: Once again rewarding a mode that has performed for me on the battlefield is always nice. Finally having this done and seeing it look so much better than my previous work is also a very rewarding feeling.
Lows: The sleep I missed to make it. (All very much worth it though just hard to get energy sometimes.
First pic of the front
Now for the other side.
And the backside.

Also on one last note I messed up my pics last time for last month so here are the speeders for those who are curious.
All of them together.

Time for some comments for those of you who rolled a '4'. As usual, I do not profess to have any knowledge of painting. My feedback is purely based upon my personal impressions, and criticism is merely suggestions for you to consider, based on things I might try or have tried. Most of the time, I am sincerely impressed.

Dumnorix: I love the new orks. I also think you have done a great job with slight conversions to add character. The Warboss, for instance, feels like a new model to me, despite the fact that I have seen countless AoBR Warbosses. The painting is dirty and grim. Great job, really.

Zis: It is always rewarding to finish something big like a GD. Great job, I love the pose, and it is always good to see people play around a little with colours. I like the blue-on-red-details. If I may raise a concern, it would be about the edge of the base. I know that some people prefer black edges, but since you have gone for the lava flow base, the black looks like another block of lava, and since you have used the rock for elevation, it sort of creates a weird effect.

Big Jon: A unit full of character. I love the "paint metal black" approach which gives the unit a real gritty veteran out-in-the-field-for-far-too-long look. If I could make one suggestion for touch-ups it would be to complement the rotten flesh dots with a third colour dot (like a very dark grey or something).

Olean: Classic stealers, classic colour scheme. Any chance of Zoats? For tongues, I know I would try a rich purple. For my epic nids I used dark purple undercoat, dwarf flesh/same purple, elf flesh/same purple. I cannot recall the ratios, but if you mix a little, you will know when you are right.

Sigur: I know moving can be tiresome, but I hope you manage to gather motivation for this project. I admire the way your models come alive. Great poses and conversions, and you already know that you can paint, but I am saying it anyway.

And for those of you who forgot (or chose not) to roll a die:

infelix: Marvellous painting. It shows that you are having fun. Epic is surprisingly forgiving yet detailed.

Nuage: A lot of humour in your take on renegades. I love kit-bashing myself, and I think you have done a great job so far. I know you rushed the soldiers, but they look good anyway. I like the colour scheme, and I also liked the "red" rust effects on the Chimera. I cannot say that I find it troublesome to have different kinds of rust in a Nurgle army. The more rust, the merrier, I gather. However, I must admit that I am a bit puzzled by the glyphs, because I do get the Viking runic vibe, and instead I get zombies ;) Viking Zombie Nurgle Renegades, anyone.

Azarkhel: Glad to see another GK squad. Despite the blurry shots, I can tell you have a good thing going. I really like the Captain's sword, and if you find the Psi-cannons too expensive, you can always go the Epic route...

Bellarus666: I do not think I complimented your colour scheme last month, so I will do so now. Those plaguebearers are ace. I am with you on the Khornurglenought. If you like a model, you can always find a place for it in your army. If I had all the time in the world, I would probably even make some minor conversions to show everyone that it is a corrupted Khorne Dreadnought seeing the true way of corruption...

and a little extra love for Epic painters:

Basilbrush: I love the way an Epic army look better and better with numbers. Great, neat job so far. A chapter might be a little too much for this tale, but a battle company (100 marines) is generally considered to consist of:

2 Tactical Detachments
Assault Detachment
Devastator Detachment

Discord: Another dawg. Looking just as good as the previous one. I consider these mere appetizers and wonder what you have in mind next. The great thing about Titans is that they can be used by almost every imperial army out there as well. Just lovely horrors, by the way.

Haarken: Great job on another three-armies-effort. I love that you already have managed to give the different armies different "feels". Great basing on all three armies.

Daemonkin: I am glad that you plan to start up your Epic project. I was a little bit concerned about the lack of Epic Mantises these first two months.

@everyone else: I must say that I am very impressed by the standard of all entries so far. Keep up the good work.

And for those who kindly commented on my work:
Discord: Well, I had one spear-tip accident during the painting and one during the photo session. Luckily for me, my house is the Epic warzone around here, so at least I do not have to bring them anywhere.
misterboff: Yes, I even considered more details, but I had to draw the line and call them finished.
jonahmaul: I am glad that you are considering painting Epic. If I were a 40K player (as I once were) I would paint up a "mirror" army just for the fun of it. After all, that is how I started my Tyranids.

09-10-2009, 21:23
Time for some comments!

@McMullet, Great stuff as usual. The names on the stands is a nice touch. Very realistic paint job.

@daemonkin, liking the crux's, look just right! Good use of bits on your captain too. (Cough, Drill out your barrels! Cough);)

And some others!
@misterboff, love the mixture of the BR and Nobz kit. Great end result.

@hwd, those RT marines are fantastic! Smooth paint work, and always nice to see the lesser known chapters.

@Nuage, Love those conversions, they're so full of character!

@Wizzard, Really vibrant colours on those dragons. Everything FD should be and more!

@Irondog, best CF's I've seen in a long time. Faces are superb, really stand out!

@Fredmans, amazing detail! The force weapon effects are really great!

@Everyone else, Keep up the good work, some beautiful minis being churned out!

Thanks to all for the nice comments,

Oh, and Award for best Joker goes to.............
Lucky! Joker's Boner made me chuckle!

highs and lows:

highs: the chaplain highlighting i like the highlighting on the armour and the text on the scrolls

ill go a little over my points for next month by adding a veteran squad, a tactical squad and some terminators the veterans are all converted, the tactical squad has many conversions aswell... jummy :)

Alright ladies, C&C!

@ Dumnorix: These orks are great! They look dark and grim, yet unmistakingly classic orky. I have an ork army in the works myself, and consider giving them a red and black scheme somewhere in between Speed Freeks and Goffs, and your red looks so good I might have to steal your technique...

@ Lucky: Great joker!

@ zis: Lovely Bloodthirster! I like that you have added armour to the one leg; for some reason I think large models like the GD look better when they are "asymmetric" in their appearance. I think this idea harks back to the original Realm of Chaos books. Lava base looks sweet!

@ kiwichild: My Brood Brother! Your Hybrids look excellent. You have managed to convert/scratchbuild variants that blend in perfectly with the classic models. I'm very inspired by your squad, I hope I can manage something similar for my Hybrids when I get around to them. Love the contrast between the skin and the blue!

@ Irondog: Perfect Crimson Fists! That blue is gorgeous - makes me want to to a squad in hommage to the Rogue Trader cover painting.

@ BigJon: Ork Hunters look great, perfect execution of the theme! These would be such a good opponent for my converted ork Kommando force...

@ Fredmans: These really scream "Grey Knights" even though they are so small - the red detailing and the blue force weapons contrasting with the grey is a good, strong look. Definitely grey is a better choice than silver in epic scale. How is the contrast between the figures and the bases in real life? I find that the tiny models benefit from this, it makes them "pop" more. Looking forward to those Land Raiders (?) Oh, and I don't own any zoats, unfortunately. They fetch quite high prices on the bay these days? Will try purple for the tongues, thanks!

@ Razormasticator: Those nids look great - the whole species was just made for dipping! I have some of my own almost assembled now, that will receive a similar attention.

@ Sigur: I would comment on your models even if we hadn't rolled the same :) You always inspire with your work - last month's squats where another example. The beastmen are very well re-imagined and executed, and the colours are a good balance between "realistic" and exciting. And the camo is sweet! Is it just me, or would that Overseer not look perfect with a whip in his hand?

Bert's Drifting Coyotes

UNIT: 10 space marines armed with:
1 Powerfist, 1 Multi-melta, 1 flamer

The drifting coyotes (/Jackals?) are...orange? They... Right. I think I need to work on this. The entire army is based around a force who fight almost exclusively on Space Hulks and other space transports.

This unit is built from AOBR, standard and old school metal space wolf marines. Each one has at least one small addition (except the AOBR ones) like a chaos shoulder pad or wolf tails. They also have some Black Templar bolt guns with chains.

I've tried really hard to do the highlights, but even though I can see them in real life the pictures don't seem to show them all that well. The sarge was really hard to paint. In fact, if anyone can look at his face and other areas and let me know how I could improve painting faces I'd really appreciate it.

I'm quite proud of the bases which represent which part of the space hulk they are situated. These guys have just arrived at docking bay 12 (as can be seen on the bases) and are securing that area of a space hulk.

The banner, and gluing the arm of the guy who fell apart while I was taking photos. All banners should be done nearer the end.

I would have liked to start on another unit, but I have only undercoated one. I really like the orange colour of this army.
Also, I'm getting to go on Bahai pilgrimage in Israel at the end of October, which I'm really excited about. Sadly I probably will have to joker next month no matter how much I get to paint.

Rear half of squad:
(Those backpacks have really sharp highlights that no-one can really see)
Front half of squad:

The tale of 40KP needs some love, so more comments!

@razcalking, really liking the background of your army, the night/dark wolf thing is cool. Itís what I love about SW, so versatile in terms of fluff. Looking forward to more.

@ Dumnorix, Nice orks, the ones with 2handed weapons look real mean. The eyes are really good too, menacing!

@hwd, more nice orks, good clean paint job. Love the giant boar, its very life like :D

@infelix, great level of detail, very impressive! Epic boggles my head a bit!

@Johnamaul, didnít notice your post first glance through! Great marines, agree that tac badges could do with picking out. Bases are cool.

@Dino, I like the mixture of bits youíve used. Nice, crisp painting too.

@Zujara. Great standard of painting! Look forward to seeing what you do with your soul grinder.

@Zis, Great highlights on all your daemons. They really pop!

@SuavelyDunn, lovely paintjob. Love the squig, very vibrant!

@Discord, like the way youíve varied the colours, love those classic minis too! Any reason youíve used square bases? Are you using them for fantasy too?

@Azarkhel, shame about the pics, but great standard! I especially like the effect on the sword.

@Pasquill, nice scheme there. Does your craftworld have any background to it? Any particular fighting style?

@Chicken_Funk. The sergeant has come out really well, very dynamic pose!

@kiwichild, itís really great to some classic models being given an update. Like the way youíve mixed in new plastic arms etc, looks seamless!

@BigJon, love what youíve done with the camo. Very effective and looks badass!

@red/winter, the face on your termi is looking sweet. Lovely shading/highlighting.

@basilbrush, Good to see more progress with em. Theyíre really going to pop once you get some markings on them, but I have to be patient!

@jpobrich, great painting style you got there, very clean! Nice bone armour and the ork skin is very smooth.

@olean, I love the old genestealer patriarchs! Especially the one on a throne with an advisor. What other models do you have planned? Lovely painting too!

Well, that's all for now. I've commented on pgs 1 & 2. Will try and do some more later.

Keep it up everyone!

10-10-2009, 21:42
@olean, I love the old genestealer patriarchs! Especially the one on a throne with an advisor. What other models do you have planned?

I bought some of the classic genestealer models directly from the foundry when I worked for GW twelve years ago. I have a Magus, psyker and a couple of metal Hybrids waiting, as well as a handful of plastic Hybrids that will see some converting.

Also, I have a large collection of the plastic guardsmen from the late 80's, as well as many of the metal figures that complements the same range. So there will be some squads of these Brood Brothers, and perhaps some Human Bombs!

I have a large squad of beastmen planned, for these I will use metal models from Heartbreaker that will be converted a bit. They look a lot like the beastmen that GW released around the time of the original Realm of Chaos books, so they fit right in.

And this being a Genestealer chaos cult, I am considering painting up a classic Greater Daemon of Slaanesh, to be used as a proxy for a close combat Carnifex (this is a 'nids list army after all).

So I think the end result will be quite the nostalgic trip back to '89 and the White Dwarf genestealer cult that once made me spend all those hours pouring over the 'eavy Metal pages...I hope!

@olean, Sounds good, can't wait!

10-10-2009, 23:22
The tale of 40KP needs some love, so more comments!

@Pasquill, nice scheme there. Does your craftworld have any background to it? Any particular fighting style?

The colour scheme for my craftworld is basicly Beil Tan but replace the green with blue and I'm going for a mobile guardian theme (only a 1 unit of Aspect warriors in a 1000 points). Only have a story that's been swimming around my mind but I'll put finger to keyboard when I get a chance.

Comming along quite nice there Haarken, but one thing left me wondering. Why are the marine infantry glued to straight bases, while the orks are on round ones?

One (of many) great things about Epic is the base size rules. As long as you do not exceed 40mm in any direction and keep them at least 20 mm in one direction, the base is legal. That means that you can use bases to give different armies different feels.

@Fredmans, amazing detail! The force weapon effects are really great!

Thanks, I tried some different approaches before settling on this one.

Thanks a lot. The contrast is quite distinct in real life. I think it is the final highlight of bleached bone on the bases that shines a bit extra in the pictures due to the lighting and flash. In real life, they look darker. I even gave them a thin wash to darken them further.

And for the latest arrivals:
@math mathonwy: Glad you chose this tale! A very good effort. I think plaguebearers look great when dipped, as they sort of look dipped themselves.
@Master of Muppets: Great tank. I love the gold and white details.
@kavyaan: Great details, and great rust/weathering on the dread.

11-10-2009, 10:46
The great thing about Titans is that they can be used by almost every imperial army out there as well.

Indeed, the main reason I painted these two first is because they complement marine armies so nicely. Might even make me bring out my Blood Angels now and then and not lose every time. ;)

Any reason youíve used square bases? Are you using them for fantasy too?

Yup! I'm actually running a daemon army in the fantasy tale as well. They look quite similar in the beginning, but will be different in the end (well, as different as you can make out of an army with like five different unit choices  ). Thinking of scrapping the soulgrinders I've yet to assemble and replacing them with something more Tzeentchy though. Mostly because the darn things are so huge I couldn't transport them. :p

The thing with posting a joker is I feel it is only right that I make more of an effort to comment so here goes -

misterboff - some great orks as usual. I praticularly like the Nobz. Definitely showcasing the simple=effective rule in terms of colour scheme.

razcalking - I liked the dread when you posted a little while ago and I like him now too. I think the base would benefit from a bit more of a contrast with the model. I should also say that I think its good that you're not going with the usual space wolves sky blue/grey.

Dumnorix - very nice orks, I particularly like the one with two choppas and the one with the big choppa above his head. I like your bases simple=good.

hwd - Another set of good looking boyz. The background/conversions will look really good across the whole army. Personally I'd do the base edges in something other than black but each to their own. The RT marines are great, the bases are very nice.

infelix - As anyone who was around last year will know I have a bit of a soft spot for epic and these are lovely. I like the fact that you have based the rhinos.

Jonahmaul - its always good to see a more unusual chapter, rather than the usual crop of first founding ones. Thes look really good too.

Nuage - I commented on how much I liked your tank last month and this one is really good too. I like the zombies but they seem a bit bright, maybe its the photo, but I think I'd try a wash just to mute the colours a little.

Dino - I'm not a fan of the spaces wolves blue grey colour but these guys look good, the chaos bits definitely help.

Zujara - I'm a big fan of the classic models so I love these flesh hounds with their traditional red and green colours.

wizzard - great aspect warriors. I like the armour of the Dragons but then I also like the whole colour scheme for the scorpions so I think the scorps are my favourites.

zis - Having done a Bloodthirster quite recently I can appreciate a good paint job on one when I see it. I also like what you did with the subtle conversions which set it apart from a bog standard model.

SuavelyDunn - A nice mek. I like the little details like the targeting cross on the lense. I also like the fact that you didn't go for some strange effect on the KFF as often it just looks rubbish.

Discord - Some more good looking horrors. I hope you won't be tempted to mix the newer ones in with these old timers. The Titan is good too. I'd go with 'she' as well.

Azarkhel - The photos aren't great but from what I can make out these look good, great bases.

More later

OK, some replies to 4s.

@Dino. Great use of mixed kits. I've used a few of the same, but not nearly as many in my army. It suits your army quite well to use so many. I shied away from using the thick rimmed shoulder pads, but perhaps I'll use them on my assault squad after seeing this. Also how did you do the two faces? They look simple, but very effective. Some of the wolf tails could use a bit of highlighting or some washes though.

@Wizzard. Those striking scorpions look like predators. The subtle bone on the swords is nice. I really like the fire dragons though. Really smooth yellow and highlights.

@Discord. I can't see any pictures...? I was able to before, and the titans looked great but the photos won't load now.

@Evenus. The grey exhausts look really great, as do the weathering around the tracks. The circular snake on the back of one of the tanks may need some smoothing out at the top where the snake's neck is kinked (am I making sense?). Also, I'm assuming that you're using photobucket? The cropping tool on it doesn't always seem to work. Perhaps try cropping it before putting it online.

@LedgendFX. The bases on these guys are really interesting with their scrub brush and mud. What theatre of war are they supposed to be in? Which country I mean...

@Haarken. Ah Epic! I really like those old dreads. On first glance it looks like a nice simple scheme, but seriously! You have put a lot of effort into those, and it shows. The detailing is well thought out, somplex enough to stand out, simple enough that it doesn't disturb the overall look.
Oops, and you have guard too? That's a lot of abblative wounds on that Titan. The titan, again is great in it's simplicity, but could do with a decal or some free hand even just in one place as it currently has a lot of flat mono-colour areas.
Oh my. And Orks... I recognise some of those very old school vehicles. The circular basing idea is interesting. Why did you choose to do that?

@Math Mathonwy. They're dripping with snot! Fantastic. You've managed a very gloopy shiney effect. Do you use different paints/washes/finishing effects to make certain parts of the model stand out? I'd really like to know how to give those different textures you've achieved.

Only one non-3
@Sigur. I really like those beastmen guard. The colours are fine and the skin is pretty realistic. My favourite part is the beastman with the helmet. Any chance of more of those?

@Everyone. Some really fantastic work, and looking forward to great progression.
I just forgot that I only commented on sigur beyond the 3's. I'm surprised how few people have posted their work at this late stage. Is this typical of the Tale?

11-10-2009, 16:25
I'm surprised how few people have posted their work at this late stage. Is this typical of the Tale?

Not so typical at this early stage. There are quite a lot of Jokers, though, and if they post, next month should be far more productive. I would advice people to keep at least one joker for December/January since those tend to be very busy real-life-months.

11-10-2009, 19:51
Discord - Some more good looking horrors. I hope you won't be tempted to mix the newer ones in with these old timers.

Heavens, no! They'd look so out of the place it's not even funny. Now, if GW produced some nice new plastic kits in the vein of those awesome bloodletters and daemonettes that didn't look like the previous metals...

@Discord. I can't see any pictures...? I was able to before, and the titans looked great but the photos won't load now.

That's odd, I can see them right now. Maybe tinypic had some issues, as that's where they're located?

11-10-2009, 21:11
OK, some replies to 4s.
@LedgendFX. The bases on these guys are really interesting with their scrub brush and mud. What theatre of war are they supposed to be in? Which country I mean...

To be honest? Beats me mate. I went for a french countryside look, but I'm still not sure if I pulled it off. I'm not a hardcore historical gamer, so I frankly dont really care, as long as it looks good to me.

11-10-2009, 21:30
@ Haarken - i don't know whether I'm more impressed by your painting or your photos! Either way both are ace with my particular favourite being the Adeptus Astartes. Don't let the queen see those Orks, it's still treason to deface coins!

@ Math Mathonwy - very nice plaguebearers, they look suitably 'icky' & slimy & the rust effect is done very well

@ Master of Muppets - nice looking stuff although the metal looks like it could do with a big of shading, a wash of badab black on the silver & gryphon sepia on the gold will provide them with a lot more definition.

@ kavyaan - nice looking stuff

@ bert n ernie - highlights are hard to show up properly in photos unless you're a professional level photographer with relevant equipment so don't worry too much. really like the theme of the army & the bases play it to that perfectly, the only slight criticism i have is that maybe the writing on the bases should line up so neatly so it looks like the marines are a bit more spread out?

and a couple of responses to comments

@ boymilla - thanks for the positive comments, I have now picked out the tactical badges & it does look a lot better although I still haven't made any transfers!

@ give_me_a_d - also thanks, I've wanted to do a Brazen Claw army for years as I think they look cool & never got round to doing a new marine army after I sold my Blood Angels almost 10 years ago so now the new army book is out I've got the excuse I need! Also like the idea of 'vanilla'/codex marines without any fancy special rules ala Black Templars/Dark Angels etc (not that there's anything wrong with these before someone shouts at me!)

12-10-2009, 17:00
Had a good month so far on my "Brothers Grimm" Space Wolves - I've already completed my goal for the month, a small Skyclaws pack with their Wolf Priest leader:

I'll post better pictures and details when submission time comes, but this shows my basic theme and colour scheme. Since I'm decently far ahead, I'm going to try to earn back my first month's Joker by completing a Wolf Guard, some Grey Hunters and whatever else seems good at the time.

12-10-2009, 20:53

As some requested here are some more disastrous pics of my attempted glazing (don't hate me!!):

It looks as though this guy has just run through a radioactive swamp and got luminous green gunk all over his armour - he is going to catch so much heat from the cleaning servitors!

Terminator squad Tychon.

And a progress shot on this month's task - Tactical squad Latydos:

More pics here (http://www.thousand-sons.co.uk) and a new gallery layout design. Any comments regarding the galleries please contact me.

13-10-2009, 12:22
@ razcalking - congrats on getting ahead of yourself, just try & keep it up now to keep you going when you lose motivation or you're really busy! Oh, and get them based! Like the fact that they actually look like assault marines, as much as I love the new Space Wolf models I think the sky claws look a little static & definately need better mixing with normal assault marine legs

@ daemonkin - I think you're being a little bit too harsh on yourself to be honest, I don't think the colours are that bad although I think that one thing I would say is that the yellow on his crest looks a little too 'sickly'. Loving the side shot though, really shows how neatly they've been painted & how well they've been shaded. You have been lazy & not painted the back of their joints back in black though!! Where are those marines for this months entry from? I love those helmets.

13-10-2009, 12:33
Thanks Jonahmaul. The joints I never really considered before. I may go back and redo them, just for you!

The tac suad are just Mk4 Red Scorpions with the scorpion icons filed off and shoulder pads from standard tac squad. The scorpion pads are winging their way to Valo in Canada for is log.

13-10-2009, 22:32

@olean: that patriarch model is AWESOME its its is..... *drools*...

14-10-2009, 12:29
@give_me_a_d, BoyMilla, Jonahmaul, misterboff, GomezAddams..
Thank you all for the encouraging comments!

I really like those old Cult miniatures and you really make them shine.

Some of the best paintjobs I've seen on Epic miniatures!

15-10-2009, 10:51
Seriously delayed comments coming up!

@Pasquill: Good job on the desert look. The rangers look like they could blend in the terrain quite easily.
@razcalking: Nice work, I like the backgound story. No merry-wikings-in-space in sight.
@Chicken_Funk: Love the colour scheme. The picture is a bit blue, you could try adjustin white balance on the camera to get a better representation of the colours.
@Irondog: I'm still stunned by the quality of your work! Nice terrain also on the background.
@red/winter: Well done on the terminator! Looking forward to seeing it based.

Non 6's:

@Nuage: Brilliant idea and execution! The bright(ish) colors on the infantry work really well. The bases are also nice, simple but eyecatching.
@wizzard: Even though the colour schemes are out of the book (at least in main colours), you've managed to get a really personal look on the aspect warriors. Thumbs up.
@kiwichild: Great use of old bitz. And very good painting this month as well.
@olean: Love the patriarch! The colour scheme is also great and just screams old school.

@To everyone painting epic: MORE! :)

Responses to comments:

@razcalking: No not yet. It took me two years to get 1200 points done so if I get 1500 more done this year I've more than doubled my painting speed.

Thanks for all the comments!

15-10-2009, 10:58
Ok guys, I need a little help. My Mk4 marines are gaining headway but I need to decide on what to do with the cross straps on the carapaces - do I leave them green, go black or any other colour?

Suggestions on a postcard, or just reply here.

15-10-2009, 11:18
Hi guys,

will Joker this month as well. I have had no motivation to work on my Eldar and I just got the Space wolf codex and a box of the wolf pack so just started workng on them.

@Mcmullet: I would also like to change my Eldar to imperial guard, with a 1000 points. As i have painted something (a commissar) for them, but i will post it next month. Also I joker last month as well, so i wasn't a no show.

@daemonkin you can use a sandy brown for ther cross straps with a yellowish highlight

15-10-2009, 11:37
I would definately paint them a different colour Daemonkin, personally I would go black as it's a safe colour & will contrast nicely with the green. I'm very tempted to steal your idea & get some of those Red Scorpion marines to mix into my army but I already have 40 tactical marines!

15-10-2009, 11:41
Thanks guys. Think black with shadow grey highlighting ala terminator power cables. Think the Mk4 fits well with the 'insect' aspect of the Mantis Warriors. Got another set fo another tac squad and perhaps I will do a dev squad with them too although I may be tempted to mix up the next few squads or it would look really out of place all my new units in Mk4 and my old units in other mks.

15-10-2009, 20:22
Some more comments -

Pasquill - I like the colour scheme on your rangers, especially the blue and white combination. Looking forward to the waveserpent

Chicken_Funk - I'm a big fan of home grown chapters and you have a good colour scheme. Do you have any background for this army?

kiwichild - A nice retro blast with those hybrids. Well painted too.

McMullet - As I've said before I know nothing about BFG, but I likes some nicely painted boats and thats exactly what you've got there. Nice work.

daemonkin - I would have said that we need some pics that show the detail a bit more, but as you've provided just that I can't complain at all. Good job.

Irondog - what can I say, probably my fave loyalist chapter, well painted with the proper number of red hands. My submission of the month.

BigJon - although the pic probably makes them look a bit too dark I like these a lot. Nice background.

red/winter - I don't think the pics do these any favours as the armour looks quite flat I wouldn't say you need to change anything.

basilbrush - (great username!) I like a bit of epic as it reminds me of a misspent youth. Your smurfs look good. Good luck with the whole chapter project.

jpobrich - The dark angels are good, nice bit of movement in the poses. The orks are good too. I can see what you mean about the skin, this is something I'm struggling with as well.

olean - Great looking stealers. I much prefer the classic blue and pink/purple colour scheme.

More soon honest.

15-10-2009, 21:41
I have finally got a camera so im happy now and can take my pics at will (exept it is my sis's camera). Sorry the lighting is bad.

Unit 1: 1 Broodlord with Feeder tendrils (90)

Unit 2: 6 Genetealers (blind) with Scything talons(120)

TOTAL ARMY SIZE: 1750 POINTS (or there about)

Uh i like Tyranids, they are my first army and have always had this paint scheme which was thought up when i bought some paint and then looked at what they made when i put them on some termagaunts. This army has been lying around for about 3 years in grey and shiny.
Feeder tendrils on broodlord and really bad head conversions on genestealers, also jumping 'stealers have been repositioned because their feet break too easily (even when painting)

Undercoat black
paint carapace Regal blue then apply drybrush of space wolves grey.
piping on skin was camo green with a DA green wash
tentacle pink on tongue and blood red on eyes
tendrils done by painting tenticle pink then a blue ink then pink again but only on raised areas and finally a highlight of a mix of pink and BB.
Scythes are layering of regal blue, shadow grey and SW grey in that order.
VARNISH! with 2 layers of floor varnish
sawdust and pva, ta-da!
undercoat Chaos black
overbrush shadow grey
light overbrush SW grey
drybrush bleached bone

second brood lord, 16 homogaunts, 15 warriors, 6 genestealers, some rippers and 3 zorothopes (spelling? no codex at moment so can't check)

Highs, getting the GS teeth on my second BL right, finally!

Lows, finding time to do it! again!

16-10-2009, 01:40
Righto comments for the 2's

@misterboff : your orks just keep on inspiring me :)
@johanmaul: I've never been able to pull off such a scheme myself. the colour scheme works for me and would be my preference but its the colours of the local sporting team and the ribbing i would get is not worth it
@bellarus666: if only i believed i could paint my plaguebearers as well as you do
@Razormasticator (nids): wow its sooo red ;)
@Razormasticator (Imp): I like the blue

@misterboff: i'll either do the rest of the company this month or move onto the 1st company
@johanmaul: I'm still a learner with the camera. next month i'll try and set up an area to do the photography
@Razormasticator: thanks
@boyzilla: yes yes you will - though if i do decide to do termis then i will do the markings
@give_me_a_d: thanks and thanks

16-10-2009, 06:53
@orange1095: Wow, I love that broodlord.

16-10-2009, 13:06
Righto comments for the 2's

@Razormasticator (nids): wow its sooo red ;)
@Razormasticator (Imp): I like the blue

Its toned down a bit. I will post what it looks like now Post dip. And thanks for the comments.

16-10-2009, 13:08
@orange1095: Wow, I love that broodlord.

Concur, its very cool.

16-10-2009, 21:09
Alright, time to comment and reply to comments!

Comments on the other guys who rolled the just number of 4 and others:

@misterboff: Well done and in time as always. I think your painting improved quite a lot over the past year and i really like those subtle conversions you do.

@Dumnorix: Another clan-themed Ork army! And another one well executed! Again, good conversions and painting. But let's see some vehicles next month! ;)

@hwd: Very cool marines

@Nuage: Nice stuff but why don't you roll a dice?

@Zujara: Classic scheme well executed. Thumbs up!

@wizzard: Stark colour schemes well painted.

@zis: Good posing and conversions. I think the lava looks a bit monotonous.

@Discord: Sooo cool to see a large number of old Horrors at once. Thanks for that, eventhough the colours are a little off in the picture. :)

@kiwichild: Awesome miniatures, good colourscheme.

@McMullet: Commetz0red already but the ships still look good.

@Irondog: I love the army shot, looks like straight from an older WD.

@BigJon: Interesting colour scheme; the camo sure works. :-)

@red/winter: Good shading on the Terminator's helmet.

@olean: Hooray for the Patriarch. You did a good job on him.

@fredmans: These blue effects on the minis make them look great. Good job!

@BoyMilla: Great.

@Haarken: Very good stuff as always.

@bert n ernie: The sarge reminds me a lot of the Christmas Marines.

@Kavyaan: Interesting colour scheme.

@everyone who commented on my work: Thanks a lot, your comments are very motivating.

@Jonahmaul: Well, as the description says, it will mostly be mix and match but the colourscheme is the colourscheme of the whole army (apart from allied units and/or mercenaries like the Squats troopers).

@BigJon: Actually, IG still is "full of" Ogryns and Ratlings as you probably know. :p

@Fredmans: Thank you, I tend to have a hard time motivating myself to do IG stuff because getting back to Orks is soooo taunting.

@olean: Cheers. I'll give the whip idea a thought. :-)

@bert n ernie: I found out that I still have 13 more beastmen heads but unfortunately I'm all out of Catachans. There might be one more Beastmen squad in the future but not now (until someone donates 9 catachan bodies ;) ).

Thanks for the comments, my month#3 entry it well on it's way.

17-10-2009, 09:55
And theres more:

Bellarus666 - a really good looking bunch of PBs, I'm somewhat surprised how well the light colour scheme works. The dread is nice too.

Evenus - I like the detail on your rhinos and the converted one is a nice change to the standard design.

Fredmans - A real masterclass in epic lovelyness. I wondered how you would do the greyknights but the grey works very well.

Case - your hellhound is nice, a realistic finish, which kinda makes it look a bit out of place, but good nonetheless.

BoyMilla - Thats a very nice Farseer. The yellow is great but I think your right to want to do some runes. It'll just breakup the yellow a bit.

razormasticator - I very much like your nids, I'm sure with a bit of prodding of those camera settings they'll look even better. The IG are nice too, although the photos make them look way too contrasty (is that a word?)

LegendFX - Nice bunch of infantry. Is it me or are the photos slightly out of focus?

sigur - thats a really good squad, nice conversions followed by a good colour scheme. Good work.

Haarken - those epic marines are great. I also like your IG and orks, The warlord is a bit clean for my liking but good nonetheless. I approve of the use of different bases.

Math Mathonwy - Nice PBs, I particularly like the metal, although I'm not so sure about the guts.

Master of Muppets - Its nice to get a big model to work on, that you can be proud of at the end. Nice chunk of points too.

Kavyaan - A nice bunch of models. I particularly like the Chaplin.

bert n ernie - I always like home grown chapters as it shows a bit of imagination. The orange in unusual but works well.

And thats the lot. To everyone who jokered like me all I'll say is better luck next time and try not to get down heartened.

I might get some PIP of the Swooping Hawks and the Deffkopta up sometime soon.

17-10-2009, 10:25
I'll need to use the joker this month.

try to make it uo next month.

Cheers Arobe

17-10-2009, 10:47
Hi guys- I'm jokering this month- had a lot on- back to gribbly goodness next month with a bit of luck.

19-10-2009, 15:11
Dear all

sorry about the long wait. alot going on in my world, work, studies and also a break down in a relationship ive been in for a long time, so as you can imagine, I've been a bit all over the place lately.

Rolled a 3

Unit - Power Armoured GKs

Background NMM Gks.

Paints, Greys from adeptus grey up through fortress

Greens and reds as typically done by me...

highlights... getting them done

low points... NMM is bloody tedious.

My name is Daniel and I am a wargamer

19-10-2009, 17:24
Well good news...I'm Back!
Yes I finally got all my 40k stuff back here to uni so I can carry on painting my beloved Deathwing though my points total has been a bit screwed up. So I'm going to be aiming to paint about 400-500 pts per month so I can move onto other things.

This month will be just 5 termies as a guide for my new paints and to get back into the flow. Next month will be the commander and another 5.

19-10-2009, 18:00
Sorry for not getting involved thus far with the thread - feel a bit bad for signing up but not pulling my finger out. Still though, plenty of time left for this month even with moving and constant tidying/jobsearching.

19-10-2009, 21:46
finally i got some time to write. im too lazy so i wont be commenting on anyone's work. anyway, i must say that there are some really nice stuff in this months preview...

i wont be putting any wip pictures, but i will leave my 'wish' list for the end of this month:

- Imperial Guard Veteran Squad x2
- Imperial Guard Platoon Command Squad x1
- Primaris Psyker x1

if my goal is achieved i should have around 350points for this month, which would mean that i get my jocker back :D

my stuff - here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218145) - (go in, who knows what could be find :p)

OK then folks, my mum visited on the weekend which means I've finally got my camera lead. As such here as some better photos of my marines. One thing I need to do is re-gloss the 'wax' on the purity seals. I did this & it looked really good (especially the ones on the red part of the armour as it made them stand out more) but I forgot what happens when you matt varnish over gloss...!

Jonahmaul: Very, very nice painting. Those Brazen Claws(?) are fantastic.

@Everyone else: Great job with everything so far. Keep up the work. Really glad I joined as now I have almost 3 fully painted squads done and a fourth one getting ready to go. Have yet to have a legal FOC but that might be rectified by Christmas.

@ daemonkin - they are indeed Brazen Claws. I will do the claws at some point soon following your advice on transfers. Luckily I have access to free laser printing in Uni so can buy the laser decal paper & avoid sealant.. Unfortunately I've only got access to free B&W printing so going to need to put greyish transfers on & then paint them afterwards (which isn't too much of a hardship as long as I've got a guide to work with)

After coming 4th in a local doubles tournament using Space Marines with my wife's Witch Hunters (but winning the Sportsmanship award), I assembled and undercoated this months Boyz last weekend.

Last week I managed to paint the 5 Burnaboyz (only an in progress picture below though), and so far this week I've started basecoating the 10 Stormboyz. Hopefully I'll get them finished by the end of the month, then the only other 'Boyz' I've got left to paint for the Tale are 2 Runtherds...

Keep up the good work everyone!

OK, I have a bit of a conundrum. The release of the new Space Wolves has led to a frenzy of new Space Wolf players in my local gamesstore. Now I was hoping there wouldn't be that many players starting a new army, but alas, I was proven wrong.

So, to avoid having to play with Space Wolves against Space Wolves all the time, I decided to change my Space Wolf-entry into something else. Something I've always wanted to do, but never had the time nor inclination for: a Chaos Space marine army of the Iron Warriors chapter. So, if McM would be so kind as to change that...

Now why have I never had the inclination to start a Chaos army before? One very simple reason: the thought of having to convert models was very daunting to me and especially having to work with Green Stuff. I've only started working with Green Stuff very recently and I'm still not very comfortable with it (it could be because my Green Stuff is probably 10 years old...).

Without further ado, here are my two models I've built (and partially painted) up till now: Two Obliterators

The first one is almost done, except that the base still needs some work. The second one was greenstuffed yesterday and is now waiting for the basecoat.

For some reason I've never really liked the metal models and I wanted to convert mine myself. Through a recent trade I got hold of some Space Marine Terminators that I didn't really need, so I cut them up and added some weapons and some daemon-bitz. I did want them to represent the fact that they are changing their weapons every turn, so I thought I would make one Obliterator with each possible weapon he can take. So, for my first two I added a lascannon, two bolters and a plasma gun.

Better late than never, replies to number threes:

@Dino: Nice, clean painting. Very nice gold colour! The horn helmets really add a nice touch and I like the Black Legion parts breaking up the colour scheme. The army is going to look great!

@Wizzard: I like the green-yellow stripy look on the scorpions and the bone looks great on the weapons. Excellent highlighting on the Fire Dragons - the orange looks brilliant! I like these immensely. The only (very) minor thing that you might want to look at is the shading of the Exarch's helmet symbol as it's a tad bold - a bit more yellow might bring the shape out a bit better.

@Discord: The blue horrors are solid as ever - still loving the differing hues that you've got going on. I might have to try something similar with my pink horrors :) And the Warhound works nicely. The bone is good and the red is excellent. I also really like the basing on these!

@Evenus: Really liking the green stuffed chapter symbol - very striking. Also love the highlighting on the goldenish parts and the mud is a nice touch that brings a lot to these.

@LedgendFX: Flames of War minis always look best en masse and these look like a proper no-nonsense fighting force. Good basing action!

@Haarken: Whoah, lotsa stuff! First of all, great photography work! I like the strong shading which nicely brings out the shapes of the tactical marines and the attention to detail on the markings of the dreadnoughts really works. As for the IG, they sorta blend in with the bases but that is due to the 2D pics and, well, they are green IG so I suppose they kinda want to blend in a bit :D At least their Titan has no such problems! The Orks look suitably no-nonsense Blood Axe and I like the conversion action going on there! Great stuff all in all!

@bert n ernie: Ooh, orange marines. That's a rare colour scheme for them. I can see that the pic has eaten up a lot of the highlight action going on there, but what I can see, I like! The multi-melta looks great! Have you thought of painting a symbol of some sort on the back of the sergeant's pack? Also (juvenile) my first thought was that the bases spelt 'dick'(/juvenile)

@gonzosbignose: so much better late than never - congrats on getting them done! Really liking the grey take on the Grey Knights and the gold parts are especially nice. Also liking the bold, bright red you've got going on there. Hang in there!

@bert n ernie: I'm actually thinking of making a tutorial on the plaguebearers. I even took step-by-step pics but I've just been crazy busy with work.

21-10-2009, 15:13
@ misterboff - those burna boyz are looking excellent, you are a very brave man indeed to be painting an Ork army over a white undercoat. How come you decided to do them this way?

@ badgobbla - iron warriors don't need a huge amount of conversion which is one plus point but also if you mess something up slightly when using GS it doesn't really matter when you're doing Chaos figures as it can still look right. On your attempts so far I must say that I like them very much & am looking forward to seeing them pained.

Last month I never got around to posting comments. So I made a point of doing it this month. Have at you…what!:eyebrows:.....:p

To the amazing ‘ones’ and others:
@Hwd: I like the way you orks match together, any thoughts on using a third/contrasting colour. Maybe a beige, deneb stone and a delvan wash? Oh and that is a lovely pig!
Oldskool beakies! You rock.
@Dino: Lovely wolves, nice and crisp.
@Zujara: Beautifully executed paint scheme on the flesh-hounds.
@SuavelyDunn: Squigs are the shizzle.
@Discord: I have about 40 of those Horrors sitting in storage back in NZ, your pics have been shamelessly stolen as inspiration.
@Kiwichild: Wow, you finished something!?!
@Irondog: I love your Fists, please make a tutorial.
@jpobirch: The red on the orks is awesome, those Deathwing chaps aren’t too shabby either.
@Olean: How do you make such a simple painting scheme look sooooo good, oh yeah Genestealer Cult factor.
@Fredmans: Sweet epic.
@Sigur: you never fail to impress, do you?
@Math Mathonwy: Very effective dip.
@Razcalking: I really like that scheme and new Space Wolf miniatures are a plus.
@Orange1095: Keep it up, you’re making some great progress.

Comments made:
@Jonahmaul: Thanks for the post advice.
@Hwd: Classic minis are my foray, I have nobody to game against so I’m mostly collecting and painting these days.
@Olean: Cheers mate, it’s good to have another GS cultist in the tale to bounce ideas off and swipe inspiration from.
@Boymilla: Bitzbox bashing is your friend.
@Infelix: Thank you.
@Case: Cheers mate

W.I.P. for October:

Well I finally got a chance tonight to get some painting done - got the first ship in my BFG army finished and the sentinels for my guard aren't too far behind.

I can't remember what class I was going to count it as, but its well over my monthly limited. I'm tempted to paint up some escorts too :D

Other pics will be in my log - comments/crits welcome

25-10-2009, 00:19
@razormasticator: Yes, this Tale's Ork army is a continuation of the previous Tale's Ork army. Last year I included 'Wave 1' stuff (Boyz, Bikes, Truks and Lootas/Burnaboyz) and 'AoBR' stuff, and this year I'll be including 'Wave 2' stuff (Nobz, Stormboyz, Grotz, Battlewagon, Stompa) and some Looted Wagons to emphasise my Deathskull theme.

@Jonahmaul: I use a white undercoat because I find it easier to see the details when I'm basecoating, and also because I want my blues to be quite (but not too) bright.

I've now finished 5 Burnaboyz and 4 Stormboyz, and I've just started basecoating 4 of the remaining 6 Stormboyz. Hopefully I'll get them all done in time to post at the start of next month...

[5 Burnaboyz and 4 Stormboyz finished, 6 Stormboyz to go...]

@ kiwichild - hurrah, necromunda stuff! I love seeing those models used in 40k & they're looking good too

@ gomezaddams - nice looking ship

@ misterboff - fair enough! I still think you're very brave as I can imagine you having to do a lot of blacking out but they look excellent so keep doing it!!!

27-10-2009, 15:35
well i'm well well well after the seven day line and by the look of it have played my second joker at the begining, this means i'm going to have to pull my finger out and seriously do something about it!! mind sept and oct are hectic months for me as i have had a lot to do!! so to be fair to play my jokers was right. i have managed to get some painting done.

I have now settled upon colour schemes for each of my units that i will feature. i know it is well late but i would just like to post and show what i have managed to achieve even thou i am well behind on it all.

so forgive the lateness and i accept that i have used my jokers. :cries:

First pic is of my flying claws, colour scheme of a snow tiger
Second is going to be my veteran company, they will be back with orange pads and stripes on.
Third pic is of my standard troopers, will be the classic tiger stripe look

any feedback will be gratefully recieved, just remember this is my first army in 18 years!!!

27-10-2009, 17:23
@Badgobbla: Looking promising. The second guy really reminds me of the first Chaos renegade models.

@kiwichild: Menancing looking horde there, mate! Nice scenic bases.

31-10-2009, 11:23
its awfully calm on the tread everybody readying for halloween?:P

31-10-2009, 12:23
kavyaan u're indeed right... but its always calm before the storm

so, in hopes of stiring things up, ill post some wip of my vets (truth be told - they've been done days ago, but i had some problems uploading images, and in meen time i even started painting them)

-sample of what they're gona look like (80% done)-

cheers :D

my thread of all - here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218145&page=1)

31-10-2009, 13:08
Aye, 'tis must be the calm before the storm. And with the storm, I mean in-laws. My update will be a little postponed next month, around the 10th, I am afraid.

31-10-2009, 21:54
@ kongisking - what flavour is your marine army going to be? Am liking the idea of the unit being painted as different cats. The WIP's are looking good & I think with some extra shading & tidying up they're gonna look very good.

@ Spar666rawk - nice idea for the conversion of the vets, I especially like the one with the stolen Tau gun as it looks very characterful. I think they could do with some head swaps to make them look less uniform though

01-11-2009, 09:55
Things have not been going well recently - as well as not finding much opportunity to paint I've not had the motivation to paint when I could. I've pretty much taken the decision to drop my Orks from the Tale - They are proving to be and will be too much work in addition to the Eldar and Daemons. Plus I still haven't got a skin formula which is quick and that I like. I'll continue to build them this year, as anyone who has looked at my log will know, I have a big stack of sprues. Maybe I'll do Orks next year, but I think I'd made some promises about nurgle CSM. So many projects so little time.

All of that means that you will see some Swooping Hawks from me this time round and thats all, but not until the end of the deadline.

01-11-2009, 16:54
@ Jonahmaul - my thinking exactly... so yesterday i dug up some of my empire horseman heads and did a bit of swapping. now they look just as i want them to look... thx for coment :)

01-11-2009, 17:07
Great minds think alike Spar666rawk, wonder what our excuse is?!

01-11-2009, 20:19
@ jonahmaul they are going to be astral claws. main units will be orange with black stripes. my kids gave me teh idea!! they have this big thing for tigers, was helping me with some colour designs and that was what they wanted me to colour!! so i did a couple of different sketches and colours and liked them all.

yeah need to put some serious refine time in some of them. but for now i just want to make sure that i get me painting skills back on track again. 18 yrs without doing it shows!!

hopefully next months showing will be better and i will be able to show off a few more units. one at a time thou:D

01-11-2009, 21:03
who cares :D....

02-11-2009, 15:29
Hello all, update thread for this month will be up later today or maybe tomorrow. :)

06-11-2009, 13:05
So where is this illusive November submission thread?

06-11-2009, 13:40
Right here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4104941#post4104941). It's been up for a couple of days. McMullet has RSI so probably didn't get around to posting a link in this thread.

OK, I know I'm almost a week late for this whole thread, but I've been away and really wanted to catch up with some replies here, and then get posting in the other thread (despite the fact that I'm jokering this month)

I had reasons to post though, one being:

@ bert n ernie - highlights are hard to show up properly in photos unless you're a professional level photographer with relevant equipment so don't worry too much. really like the theme of the army & the bases play it to that perfectly, the only slight criticism i have is that maybe the writing on the bases should line up so neatly so it looks like the marines are a bit more spread out?

What do you mean by the writing on the bases lining up neatly? I deliberately did it so that each word would be further up a line, so that they were at a jaunty angle, but wasn't sure if it worked. I'd really appreciate it if you could elaborate on your suggestion as it may help me for the next unit I work on.

And theres more:

bert n ernie - I always like home grown chapters as it shows a bit of imagination. The orange in unusual but works well.

Thanks very much! I am hoping that when they're finished they'll stick out without looking like a bunch of pumpkins.

@bert n ernie: I'm actually thinking of making a tutorial on the plaguebearers. I even took step-by-step pics but I've just been crazy busy with work.
d**king bay 12 eh? That's the wrong kind of space ship. "Space Bulk 5" the movie.
I'm not sure I'll be putting symbols on the backpacks. I like the smoothness of some guys, as it gives a more rag-tag feel than having a symbol there each time. If you do end up doing a tutorial post it in one of the tale threads so I can check it out.

@bert n ernie: The sarge reminds me a lot of the Christmas Marines.

You know what? I've decided that's a compliment! I have no idea what the Christmas Marines are.

12-11-2009, 20:36
I meant that you should have one letter near the front of a base, another in the middle, another at the back of the base etc. I think they line up too neatly so the marines look like they are just walking in a horizontal line whereas I would imagine them to be more spread out in a squad formation (so for example two marines taking point & three stood behind them?). That's just my opinion though!
