Personally I have never really liked the Dante figure that much, but when its painted to that standard by you, it has a certain appeal.

Yeah, Dante was one of those figures that was pretty new when I got into 40k. I started as an Ultramarine player but was always kinda jealous of the BA's gold artificer armour and dantes death mask. the figures always been one of my favorites since back then. Tycho was another one I always liked. I was kinda hoping in the new codex they would update Tycho's sculpt.. the current sculpt is good, but he is just a little small.

I worked on the landraider more yesterday. There is a gap in the Hull that wasnt that noticeable when undercoated. After applying the red on, I realized I have to go back and do a little gap filling. No big deal.

All this progress was done in only a few hours.

Hey BMX, about how long does it take to paint one BA? Am looking into BA again if Ido can them fast enough...

I can paint 3 basic marines in about 5 hours... but that is an estimate and i paint slow. i have never timed myself. I often paint them in a few stages. with the terminators, I painted all the Mechrite red on all 5 in one day. Then I did all the blood Red in a Day, then I did all the high lights then Inking in another. Then did the detailing and basing on another. So it took about a week to get all the figures done.

Do you have another army? If you alreay have a collection of figures to play with, then take your time on the BA's. I used to rush sometimes because I wanted to get my models on the table top. After selling al my figures, i realized, that after painting warhammer for over 10 years, I had nothing to show for it, so I decided to really spend time with this army and cut no corners. Progress is a bit slow, but the results are great and I really like this collection and overall through the process of taking so much time, it has changed my outlook on 40K a bit.

I have thought of a really cool fast painting technique for White Scars I am tempted to try out on a few figures.

Such a nice army, and I admire your dedication to it! Building and painting a full marine company is no easy task, and you're doing it with an high standard too :). Such a shame that I missed this log for that long.

May I ask how the FW land raider kit pieces go together? I had some troubles with my hellhound, fitting the rear resin part in the chimera chassis is a bit difficult. I'm asking since I see that gap in the raider, and this is seriously preventing me from buying one

it may be the lighting of that pic. with the weather and normal light the highlight is much more subtle.

My preordered blood angels still havent arrived yet...... so I went to the game store and picked up a box of Death Company and a Sanguinor figure. the sanguinor figure is pretty amazing. I was surprised by how convertible it looked out of the box... So i cut him to pieces to remake my captain. The green stuff on the figure now is just to fill gaps and give support. I will be lengthening his legs and sculpting some hair on the figures head. He looks a bit more Blood Angelish than my current captain, which i will be holding on to. If i ever needed to run the Masters of the Chapter formation in a game of apoc, he could stand as the 4th company captain.

I armed the new captain with a power sword and a hand flamer... not as potent in the game as my lightning claws. I thought about arming the figure with a perdition pistol, but I didnt want him to look like a Rip off of Dante, and I did want a template weapon in the squad so I went hand flamer. With 5 power weapons, the stats of the captain, and the bonuses from the priest, this squad should be able to murder anything without the claws...

The figures pose compliments the command squad well

yes.. the death company sprues. I am pretty satisfied with them. There are only two sprues in the box, but they are packed with stuff. I built 6 Death Company figures today, and have a ton of bits left. Im probably using about 50% as much bits stuff as GW does on their figures. They look really good.

Great Captain conversion - any chance of a closer pic so we can see the details?

Here is the last photo I took of the captain. But the figure has radically changed since I took that photo. I decided I want a 'Red Armoured' captain in my force rather than the Gold. I think if I go with a more traditional red power armour, the sanguinary guard, dante, and Sanguinor will stand out that much more. And plus, in the Codex, captains cant have Artificer armour as an option. (maybe GW overlooked it? seems like BA especially, would have Artificer armour.)

My one gripe with the figure in the photo, as good as the figure looked and as proportionate as it is to a real human, it looks a bit awkward with the other marine figures. His feet are too small, (If marines were a size 14US, he would be a size 9US) and to scale he would stand about a foot taller than the other figures.

I ended up adding a Collar to the figure's neck, one off of a company champion figure to make his armor look more like Power armor, I replaced the figures legs with power armor (more like tycho's look) and I added some gear to the figures belt and sculpted the hair. Another thought I had was to add an Extra Dante Jump pack to the figure, and give him a JP honour guard, and let a librarian lead my current. But I decided, that this figure should lead his company on the ground, and Dante can lead the Vanguard (Im thinking apocalypse). Tomorrow If all goes as planned, i can get some finished painted photos of the figure as well as some of the, hopefully then, completed landraider.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_4403.jpg

forgot to mention, I also have a squad of Terminators with stormbolters built up and awaiting some forgeworld pads. I also have a Forgeworld death company Rhino Door Set coming with those. With rage now in the DC profile, my initial idea of jump packs would be very difficult to control.

That captain really compliments your Honour Guard/Command squad. They'll look good standing on a hill, as if surveying the battleground and directing the troops.

I thought it may have been as oversight when I noticed captains (and I think the other HQ models, Chaplains and Sanguinary Priests) couldn't take Artificier armour, that seems really odd.

That's pretty good time. I paint really fast so I might go faster than that. I have many other armies painted at a higher standard. I'm thinking of doing BA for a tournament in Dallas in October (I try to do a differnt army for each tournament and sell tham as I go...). I'm doing my nids like your BA now too.

I appreciate all the support. Here are some photos of the new captain Aphael. I am very satisfied with the figure. Reminds me of Leonartos from blood quest. The figure compliments the command squad very well. He looks like a captain, but wont draw the attention away from Dante, sanguinor or the Sanguinary guard, which will be more of the centerpiece of my army.

I will probably start a "forces of armageddon thread" that includes my marines malevolent aswell...

also some brainstorming i did on the bits composition of the tactical marines:
I will probably give each standard marine a blank left shoulderpad with the BA decal.. the right shoulderpad will bear one of the sculpted pads from the new boxes and personal heraldry similar to the heraldry of the space hulk terminators...
the company symbol blooddrop thing will be relocated to the legs i guess.

Nope, Sang guard chest is much different. Not as much definition and it isnt as broad. I will also be using that bit already in my army on a Sang guard. I also used Sanguinors sword on the figure.

I think it certainly looks better than the Sanguinor figure. Nice work.

Thanks, I appreciate it. How is your work coming on your Blood Angel log? a lot of the new bits will lend themselves well to your true scale converting. Also, were the Lamentors always a BA successor? or was that added in with the new dex?

Question on the side, did you do the whole land raider with airbrush or by hand / brush? I am amazed by the clean base color.

Its by brush. Just make sure you water down your foundation paints. Because i heavily ink eerything, it also adds almost like a smoothness to some things.

Its a shame you added hair to the captain, everybody knows nobody 'messes' with the baldies! Super quick indeed amigo.

Did you have to remove any chapter specific markings from the chapter master set to 'BA' them?

I wasnt sure to go with hair or go bald. If it was a regular codex marine, I probably would have gone with the bald option, but as BA's age about half as fast as Regular marines and live twice as long (if they dont die in battle) I think the hair is good. When I get proper photos I am sure you will appreciate it more.

Masters of the Chapter figures are completely generic. They have no specific chapter Iconography and can be used for any marine force. They are great figures and do have some wings and stuff on them that do feel a bit BA when painted up. They also convert well with plastics, allowing head swaps and some arm swaps straight out of the box. With the new plastics you could get some pretty cool figures out of that set with very little work.

You should start a forces of armageddon thread! that may be what this thread turns into after the BA's are wrapped up. I love that SGT figure too. I have a special place for all those 2nd Ed figures. There is something about them.

Whats next to paint? well, I have the landraider 95% finished and I built up some DC with the new stuff, some Rhinos and a bunch of tac marines. I will probably get the landraider out of the way and go into the Death Company as I have been pretty eager to paint some of the new stuff. Then once my pre-ordered stuff comes (I dont know why I even preordered it, as it is after teh release date and i dont have it), I need to put in some work on more tac squads, the last 5 devs, and another assault squad.

The new stuff looks really nice, the captain is a nice conversion and fits well with the rest of the squad. With the paintjob you could use him alongside the other captain to give you different weapons options

The Lamenters, well I can't remember seeing anything about it from Codex Angels of Death and I never saw the 3rd edition Codex Blood Angels. But a long time ago there was an article in the UK White Dwarf covering the cursed founding and it was there that I first saw the mention of the Lamenters as being a Blood Angels successor.

I am a fan of the captain as well, but kinda agree with the thought of him disapearing in the squad. My favorite detail is hiw knee pad with the the wing heraldry great work on that. All he might need is something small like a white detail on the hand flamer to draw the eye in a triangle from shoulder to belt buckel to flamer and back again. At the moment the eye wants to go there just doesn't have a reason. Beautiful work though, keep it up.

I kinda agree with you guys a bit. I like the figure a lot, but I am going to continue to brainstorm for a captain figure. I will keep this figure as Aphael though. Probably use him as a Sgt.

I want my army to be based around the time period of the second war for Armageddon, in which Lazarius was in command of the 2nd company and Aphael was likely a Sgt, who took Lazarius's place when he died (when the new codex was written). This is the time period before Tycho got the black rage, so I could always use him in a game of apoc.

Anyone have any ideas?
Wargear?
Base Model?

So Lazarius was the Master of the Guard, right? I think that an inspired model kitbashing Sanguinary Guard & Death Co would be great. Maybe you can add some type of cloth, cape or tabard.

Lazarius was the captain of the 2nd company in the 2nd war for armageddon. His name appears in the apocalypse book where his army is charted and again in the How To Paint Space Marines book, his name is dropped many times in the BA section as Captain of 2nd company.

With the new codex, they have Aphael as the captain of the 2nd company in the chapter break down on page 9. Because they also have captain Machiavi as captain of the 3rd company rather than Tycho, it is safe to assume this breakdown is post 3rd war for armageddon.

So with 2nd war for armag period being my target, I think it would be cool to have Lazarius as captain and Aphael as a Sgt.

According to the new codex the Sanguinary Guard is led by Sepharan.

I might do another build off of the Sicarious figure for the captain. but I'm in no hurry. Time to finish the LR and death company.

How did you do that collar!!!???
Needs cape

I carefully cut the collar off of the Company Champion that comes in the command squad box set and then greenstuff it on. I did the same with a SGT. Collar on the old commander.

Cape would be cool, but I dont like the plastic capes that come with the captain plastic set. They look more like a fin than a cape.

Idealy, I will base my figure off of Sicarious, who has a cool cape.

There's a Blood Angels Captain in the Codex's colour section (page 66) that's made from a mix of bits off the Sanguinary Guard (chest/head/sword), Death Company (legs) and the plastic Captain kit. My suggestion would be to try to replicate that but with a SG Power Fist instead of stubby little sword.

Even though it's plastic it's one of the nicest mini's on the page.

Well I know in the last actual codex the captain they had in the yellow drop company colours was armed with a storm bolter chain sword and bald headed gas mask with the high collar chest piece. I was never able to get anyone to confirm if he was to be Aphael since he was if I remember right shown in the 3rd armageddon codex. I generally assume he was. So if your doing him as a serg and that is him, I'd say make a younger more youthful version. The GW captain was fairly cut and dry no frills kinda guy. I would say he was concervative and since that model seemed to have a selection of more advanced wargear he was not one for antiquity or much frivality. I'd say go with a bare head with grey/white hair, have him armoured in a fairly newer mark suit. Maybe his shoulder has a scroll stating his name. I wouldn't want him to out shine his predecessor.

Truly awesome stuff.

As for the Captain, i like the finished model of him just as is. I always found that really how you feel about the model makes the model more meaningful in a role moreso than what he is composed of.
If that makes any sense...

I am a big fan of all three of your captain models fella, however with the presedent of grandure set by your command squad my advice would be to go with the Original gold, lightning claw captain or the lastest incarnation based around sicarius, but again with gold armour. The 2nd captain, with the red sculpted armour, although a great model/conversion, doesn't suit the command squad, in my humble opinion.

The gold armour makes a dramatic difference and really looks great, i think its an essential aesthetic for a captain to suit you command squad!

Keep up the great work fella :)

an old friend of mine (as far as toy soldiers go) created one of the web's most beautiful Blood Angels a while ago.. So with the new kits released he is back to the hobby.. I intented to do my Sanguinary priests with the color scheme pictured in the Codex.. After seeing his inspirational work, I am going for the white pattern, pictured in the old WD.. so I guess I will use my Sanguinary Guard box for 3 Priests and 2 Captain conversions =)

My plan is to dremmel out the current legs on the figure and replace them with dark angels plastic robbed legs. Sounds great :D
Actually I saw a great conversion of Mephiston somewhere where he used the sword from the bloodletter plastics for the champion as a base for a bit bigger blade and the legs of either dante or Astorath (not sure) and sculpted the robes to be flowing behind him as he walks. I have a dev squad in the force. right now it is just a 5 man squad. I need a few more bolter marines in there to take some bullets.

The reason im leaning toward a second tank is to take advantage of the fast rule and use them together. The vindicator is nice because the demolisher cannon on a fast vehicle will ensure it gets a shot or two in before my assault marines begin to get into the enemy ranks. a 2nd baal is also a good option as they are fast, scout, and pack quite a bit of medium firepower. a second baal maybe with a firestorm canon, rocket, and some heavy bolter sponsors would work well with my current baal pred.

Which tank you choose depends on what you feel is lacking. Baals are better at dealing with light infantry and transports; the Vindicator is great for threatening Marines on foot and heavier vehicles.

PrimeMinisterSinister
18-06-2010, 16:32
I can tell you now that fast demolisher's are crazy to have to deal with.
Before they were more of a board control unit, now they're a real threat to the back lines too.
Although, two scouting baal's would be awesome.

Also, I'm loving the priest, the finish on your marines is so smooth and glossy. Real props.

ilikebmxbikes, you have some fantastic Blood Angels my friend, looking over your project log inspired me to purchase my first 40k model in over 5 years, GW should definitely think about taking talented and enthusiastic people such as yourself, and putting them on their marketing strategies. Like everyone else has said, fantastic Angels!

Loving how you've done your DC, they're so fresh and sparkly (tho in a killy death way clearly).. you've managed to get the look i was going for but to a much higher standard and without them looking gray.. I love the subtle highlighs on the Black Armour..

thanks for all the support.

I really just try to keep my figures simple and clean. With the new BA kits it is very easy to quickly make an over cluttered figure with all the good stuff on the sprus. I try to spread it out a bit.

Here is my new chaplain on foot. My jump pack chaplain is kind of useless now that I have opted for a razorback instead of JP's for my DC. The figure is a really easy conversion. I just cut the head off of Lemartes and used his arm. The rest of the lemartes figure will be used later down the road with his pistol arm/shoulder pad being incorporated into my mephiston and his body possibly being the base of my 'Final' captain figure.

Asorath - I dumbed this figure down quite a bit. I like the GW one a lot, but he seems 'too epic' for my taste. so i swapped out the winged pack with a metal dante one (No winged packs except sanguinor in my force) he looks pretty plain in pewter but once i get some paint on him he should look pretty cool.

The 'calmed down' Astorath looks quite good, not seen him done like that before. The chaplain conversion I feel could benefit from a better chest plate but then I dislike the particular one you have chosen as a general principle. It hides too much of the helmet. Whilst I know you steer away from too much bling even the standard chest with the Imperial eagle or the winged skull would suit the figure better I think. A good post though, the arm with the crozius is very nicely sculpted and helps make any chaplain look more dynamic I think

The death company are beautiful. Every model in the army seems to look better than any model in my army. Insert jealousy here.

I was wondering if you would put up a shot of the whole army as it currently stands, just to sort of show how you are getting on overall.

I love the MK8 chest collar. I used it also because the cut around lemartes head was pretty close to the figures chin. the mk8 conceals the cut very well.

The chaplain is a very quick and easy conversion with mostly just plastics off of the new BA plastics with lemartes's head and arm. For how simple and easy he was, I am very pleased with the overall figure.

i have had a few sets. The most recent one that came from forgeworld must be a new cast as the resin is darker and significantly cleaner than my last set. I never had much trouble getting the rhino armor to work it was the landraider armor that gave me grief.

The black and the white are very easy to paint. The black is just a black undercoat, codex grey highlights and a heavy badabb black wash. The white is just codex grey, with skull white painted on one feather at a time. It takes a little bit of time and brush control. but it isnt too hard.

Here are a few pics of the updated razorback. Got my heavy flamer turret on there. I also added a hunter killer missile. Mostly for looks but it might come in handy during game play. I left off the hunter killer on the Heavy bolter set up as it seems kinda funny to position stuff infront of the guns. If you look at some of GW's same razorbacks, it looks like if the twin linked heavy bolters opened up, they would blast the pintle mounted storm bolters right off.

I really like the angels encarmine. Particularly because their death company and Sanguinary guard wear white armor. The white would look really cool in an all red army.

Didn't remember about the BA's fast tanks, I can see why you're choosing a tank over a devastator squad now.

Great Chaplain conversion, it goes to sow that you can still get a good model from a simple conversion. I'm a bit of a devotee to kit bashing myself, most of my Space Wolves are kit bashed from various marine kits.

Everything else is superb as usual.

First-
Paint the area SNAKEBITE LEATHER

Then paint it bleached bone, leave some areas in the cracks darker. Bleached bone is a light color and may need more than one layer. layer the areas that are more raised more bone colored and the more recessed areas a bit thinner and darker.

the book arm is a separate piece that attaches to the figure at the torso the same way the plastic arms/torso's join. Any plastic arm and a lot of pewter arms can just be glued right on.

Brilliant seeing it all together. Been taking a lot of inspiration from your Angels for my own efforts - thanks for sharing all this with us :)

sorry for the lack of updates. i managed to paint a few more figures and my thunderhawk transporter came.

I was always on the line about getting a large forgeworld kit... i was not totally sure i could justify spending that much money on a kit, but after receiving the thunderhawk, i am sold. This thing is absolutely massive and there is a ton of pieces. The casting is clean, but as all forgeworld kits, it will require some cleaning and sanding to fit... but that just means i will spend more time on it and get more out of the build. having a finished transporter will also make 'Deep striking' landraiders more realistic.

Wow! I cant wait to see your Thunderhawk, if the rest of your stuff is anything to go buy, it will be AMAZING! Good luck building it, I hear they are not the easiest kit by quite a way.

I have heard they fit poorly at spots and require a lot of cleaning. cleaning will definatly take a while and I have noticed some slight areas where the ship will need fitting, but its nothing too bad.

Ah I see, somebody was really kind to have that nice and expensive present. :)
Actually I have this FW transporter baby at home. But it is not my own, I have it borrowed from my friend to take dimensions and probably make 3D mesh for future reference, if I decide sratchbuild it.

Wow that is a really great army you are putting together. Really like the red paint job you've done.

The Thunderhawk wasnt a gift from anyone. more of a gift to myself... ha. The price on ebay was the lowest I have ever seen, so it was sort of a large impulse buy. but after getting it in the mail i am glad i made the jump.

This guy got finished

I started pinning it together. Instead of pinning on the connecting parts as I would with a regular figure, I am pinning straight through the kit as if i were Nailing a wooden board down... if that makes sense... I am drilling small holes through certain parts, inserting metal pins, and then after I glue/gap fill it together, I can then go back and fill in the tiny pin holes. By pinning this way, the kit so far is fitting together very well and feels very sturdy. After begging pinning, I have noticed the kit is fitting together much better than anticipated and some of the gaps i experienced while dry fitting it with my hands now join together very clean.

The librarian looks great fella, by far my favourite librarian model from the current range. I am also very jealous of your thunderhawk! I am very much looking forward to following your progress on it.

Yeah I´ve meant it, that you bought gift to yourself. :) It is interesting model and it is very big. Something about 70 cm x70 cm.

Nice Librarian, but I will have somebody custom made, same as this Chaplain or Sanguinary Priest. It will be great relax from this red.

Oh dear, third Tactical squad . I´m still not finished with the first one. Two marines are still unfinished.

Seriously - I have painted so much red, the death company and librarian were a nice break. All the layers and painting red really has conditioned me so that painting any color, other than red (or white) seems fast.

forgot to mention, your stuff is really good. your chaplain model is awesome. Your figures have a very subtle details that I appreciate and am striving for in my force.

yeah man. old white dwarfs are the best. I wish i didnt give a ton away. Reading the old ones brings back a lot of memories. Not to dog GW, but old white dwarfs are a lot better than the current ones. They were more focused on modeling and the hobby opposed to pushing new products.... Old white dwarfs also had a ton of Background articles and Chapter approved. Wish we could get more of that back.

Wow, look at that! Viva impulse purchases eh? That's going to be great when it's done, and one hell of a centerpiece for the army.

Old White Dwarves are great to flick through, it's amazing how much stuff you forget from them.

Heh thanks. I was only wondering, why you didn´t write it into my log. :)
I think you can see, that your log is for me great inspiration, althought I make own way.

totally agree. It was a magazine that was about the game and stuff gamers did and wanted to share. Now its a release catalog. I loved looking at articles about games conventions and competitions and seeing conversions like the army of darkness fantasy force with car, ash and various other characters. Or the little extra missions, stories, and sometimes card terrain. Remember the actual letters page? I really like that even a couple years ago theyd show peoples conversions and forces from around the office like the inquistors units when they released the WH force. When was the last time you read a half page story or mini fluff in a dwarf that wasnt connected to either a battle report or specific army release. I realise GW makes tanks, I dont need to see a 2 page ad on them right after an article about the army. Sorry I got a little fired up. I LOVED that magazine and in the last 2 years they have randomly stopped my subscription 3 times and lost 3 other issues. I now get them almost 3 weeks later than I used to when they moved everything to the states again. I used to get the mag 7-10 days before the month started now I seem to get them by the 15, I havent even gotten this months. So mad.

I have to agree with Tcraigen GW is really slacking with the white dwarf A.T.M and the quality has gone back a lot ( don't read about 50% of the articles anymore ).
it is a shame bud I still buy it every month ( not willing to miss 1 in the collection).

yeah man. Last whitedwarf, was entirely fantasy. i purchased it, went home, opened it up, and the 1 piece of 40K was just a paragraph describing one of the Ultramarine novels from black library... I was bummed

yeah man. it usually takes me about 15 minutes to read all that i want in a WD. I miss all the chapter approved, scenarios, campaigns, and the fluff article they used to put out.

I wish GW in general would do more campaign packs. Armageddon, Storm of Vengence :piscina IV, etc. I know forgeworld is doing their job with the imperial armour books, but I wish there was something more in between that was more generally available. Apoc, planetstrike and cities of death really give a lot of room for players to use those scenarios and create their own campaigns, which i love, but GW fluff used to be so dope and the current stuff leaves a bit to be desired.
