After a year or so break, I am back. The last project I worked on before I paused was a blood angels tactical and command squad. I decided to pick that project up and complete the entire blood angels second company. My goal is to paint a squad a week, all at a very high painting standard. I will only be using space marine bare heads from the Masters of the chapter box set. These heads are smaller than the plastic ones and I think make the space marines look a bit more in the proportions of the artwork in the codexes. If anyone has master of the chapter heads or needs SM plastic heads without helmets or SM masters of the chapter bits (minus the heads), let me know.

With rumors of the new codex coming out, I was a bit hesitant to start the army now, as there would likely be changes that would either require me to go back and change units or outdate my models, by bringing new plastics into the line and updating the armylist... But I decided to do it anyways. I want to build this army as how I see blood angels, how I have seen them the past ten years being involved in the hobby. Some of the new 'upgrade' sprues and can make an army look tacky or over-cluttered with blatant iconography. So I start.
Please note, these figures are all works in progress and I dont have a proper painting space yet. I am using my computer/work space. photos will will improve as the painting log progresses. They all have no matt coat on them either- so they are very glossy.

those are some really nice paint jobs.
Very nice, the company banner and chaplain in particular I really like! It's also a very angry looking red, very fitting I think.
Looks really great so far.
The one marine with the scars over his face looks nice, cool idea with that head :)
The apothecarius looks also great, is the body one of the chapter masters with the right arm of the honor guards? Definitely one of the coolest convenversions i've seen for some time.
That chaplain is a great conversion, I like it very much :)
Besides I would paint the armor of the captain golden, would make a good contrast to the rest of the troops, don't you think?
Is that company banner a free hand? If yes, it looks really good!
Kind regards,
Ostling

You guessed the Sanguinary Priest Conversion! It is the masters of the chapter body, with a BA honour guard priest insanguinator and the plastic apothacary head and backpack.
The banner is a freehand copy of the 2nd company standard pictured in the old Angels of Death Codex.
For the captain, I am leaning toward painting his armor golden with white wings and a yellow and red striped shoulder pad.
The figures havent been dullcoated yet, so the red still looks super shinny. Im going to finish all these figures, decal and base them before Dull coating the entire batch. In my experience, the dullcoat will even out the red ink on the armour a bit.

Wow, that looks really great!! You have a big talent!
Sounds great the description of your captains armor. Really looking forward on seeing the paint on it ;)

Damn what an awsome freehand banner. I love it :) keep this leves its amazing...
But some of the figures seem to be unfinished (missing highlights).
You must paint the captain in gold ;) I would love to see him with a golden armor :)
All in all I have to say this is a very nice army with cool painted marines and lots of awsome conversions! Keep it up!

a very nice blood angels army you have done, the paint job is very nice and clean.
the captain should be gold, with some bits of red and make his shoulder guards red too.
Thats an excellent looking army. Love all the conversions, especially the Chaplain. Yhe banner looks great aswell. Lots of character in all the squads.

I started the captain last night

Here is a pic without the flash of some tac marines. I think it better shows the color of the red.

The Captain is looking excellent, The gold really stands out, and has been painted very well.

This is looking fantastic.. as a long time collector of BA myself (4th Company).. I do appreciate what you are doing..
What is your recipe for the red which I like a lot.. I'm re-vamping ;) some of mine and love the colour you have achieved..
Best wishes.... and subscribed

These bring back the best of the Red Era without all the fiddly bits. :)
Good in every field I can think of, and with your ace-of-spades painting you really should get the Space Hulk Terminators for your force; you're doing too good to not have them.
Judging by your smartly pulled-off Command Squad, you seem a slick converter. Perhaps a Mk. I Rhino (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225932) or two could be mixed into your possible future tank park?
I'll follow this - best wishes...
Nice minis. It will look cool on table. :)
The gold of the captain works pretty well with the others of the squad.

Amazing Angels dude, I really love these. My first company was the BA second and so I have a great affection for them. Yours look mych nicer then my original ones but rather then redo them constantly I chose to move onto the third company now. I love your sanguinary priest he is very cool great converion. The chaplain is a wicked conversion amazingly well done good work.

small update
I started the banner bearer today
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_1236.jpg
To achieve the red:
Start with a black undercoat
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_1227.jpg
Then apply a coat of Mechrite red foundation paint
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_1228.jpg
Coat of Blood Red
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_1232.jpg
Highlight with Blazing Orange
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_1233.jpg
GW Red Ink (not sure if it is made anymore)
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_1234.jpg
For the last two steps, I take a thin line of black ink and go through the cracks in the armor and then Finally Dull coat the whole model. I havent dullcoated any of these figures yet, but because I use a lot of ink, the dullcoat evens it out and really gives the figures a nice finish.

I definatly want to get some space hulk terminators and combine them with some Space Marine terminators and forgeworld BA shoulder pads. I will probably only use parts from the Space Hulk figures but I do want to recreate custom Gideon and Lorenzo figures to lead terminator squads.

I think gold was the right choice for the Captain. Great-looking models!
nice army so far!
will provide great inspiration for my upcoming BA force =)
These fellas are looking really sweet. Really like the assault squads helmets.
Only thing is that I'm not a big fan of the red shouldertrims. I'm more in the BA have black trims camp. Sometimes the red trims can make the models look a tad bland. not so much here. Really nice and I hope to see more of them :)
I love your models - amazing stuff.
I am also just starting on a blood angels force, including some converted Space Hulk termies (plog coming very soon). One question - can you do a step by step on how you did your yellow? The helmets look perfect
Thanks for the guide on the red... hmmm will have to try and find a source for the red ink..
Best wishes,
Carl
Nice work, love the models.

I will get a step-by-step on the yellow when I finish the last assault marine hopefully today.
I got finished a few of the command squad's bases and took a better picture of the captain and standard bearer. Should I add some grass to the bases? The green grass may contrast well with the all the red. Let me know what you guys think.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/Capt.jpg
Go for some scorched or dried up grass perhaps? Browns and Yellows with little if any green.
Man these guys look so good.
I'm actually so surprised that a black base coat can give u that red and it looks like its fairly easy to paint. I know that I did my BAs with a White base coat and they are a pain in the ass to paint.
You may have inspired me to maybe go an strip my own BAs and repaint them useing your method.
Have you tried a different method of washing you marines because they don't make red ink anymore?

I know. I tried the new Baal Red Wash, but it is too diluted to give the same effect. The old inks are so much stronger. They both have their uses. The new badab black wash is amazing for metalics and the ogryn flesh wash is also amazing for faces and lighter things. I am trying to buy up a bunch of the old inks or find some similar products in another range.
The new foundation paints (or maybe not new) are the real life savers. I cant believe how well they work. The red and yellow are amazing. I could seriously paint imperial fist marines over a black undercoat with those paints as a base.

Final Step- rebase all the detail spots,(eyes, ears, vents etc.) in black then paint them the appropriate color. Then use chestnut or a similar brown ink to shade in all the black cracks in the armor.

Here are a few pics of the sgt for my second tactical squad. the figure is a subtle conversion. I cut, pinned and repositioned and green stuff'd his legs and gave him some of that blond hair that we used to see on the BA figures in the old Codex:Angels of death.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_1258.jpg

This tac squad is going to have a lot of repositioned legs and the figures will look more at ease.... but not too relaxed, they wont look out of place on the battle field. So many of the tac marine legs are all squated down, which is cool but I want some more marines standing upright in the force. the upright marines give more variation to the poses and look much more "space marine size" when standing next to other figures like Imperial guard.
Great painting. :) nice and crisp. where's the head from on that sgt? is it from one of the masters of the chapter with hair sculpted on?...Actually is it the one you've used as the company champion?

I based it black, then painted Iyanden dark sun, then a highlight of bleached bone, then a watered down yellow ink wash, then an Ogryn Flesh Wash.

These guys look really cool!
Can't wait to see more!
These are quite amazing! I can't believe your formula is so simple, yet you make it look so good. I know you talk about using inks instead of washes, but have you tried using the washes instead? What would be the difference in the effect? I don't have any inks left :( and am going to try your scheme on my Space Hulk Terminators.
You conversions are beautiful and masterfully crafted! This is one of the most stunning armies on warseer. You don't see Blood Angels very often and it's more rare that their done to a quality half as good as yours (no offense to anyone who has one). Can't wait to see what you paint up next!
Where did you get the head for the Tactical Marine Srgt? If you sculpted that yourself...well...I don't know what to say. Excellent work!

wow and i thought i was one of the only few who dose the inks and wash combination :)
but i may ask do you know where i can get hold of some GW style ink? cos i tried normal ink and it failed horribly.
very nice work you have done, blood angels are still the awesome ;)
have you tried using the washes instead?
The washes actually work pretty good from what I have tried, personally I would take inks over washes but they don't make inks anymore soo what can you do.
So far I have tried mixing Baal Red and Devlan mud, it seems to do the trick, I'm still not sure if its the best way to go about painting blood angels.
Also the models are looking fantastic keep it up!

An excellent looking army, I think you've turned my temptations into a reality as I will start that BA force now. If only I could reposition legs.
We'll be watching the thread, great work.
i like the redder colour (the colour you showed in ur first post better) the no flash pics made it look too....hmmm boring as a blood angel
I am in full agreement with everyone else here, that is a totally amazing looking BA army!
At one time I was thinking of doing BA myself, and I still have some Death Company and a few of the old BA special character figures in my game closet somewhere. The utter coolness of your army seriously tempts me to consider repainting all my black SM in red! ;)

For white details like chest eagles I just base it black, then do a full coat of Codex Grey. Using skull white and my detail brush, I then paint the feathers, leaving the cracks grey. I can do a tutorial on it. Its pretty easy, you just have to be very steady with the detail brush and paint the feathers slowly and only use a little paint on the tip of the brush and you can just slowly build it up.

Im back from the modball. it was a ton of fun and i have a lot of video editing to do, which means I will get a lot more painting in during my breaks from work.
I am building up the second tactical squad to accompany my sgt. which was previously pictured. I want the whole squad to kind of be 'at ease' to match the sgt's pose.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_2472.jpg
This marine really reminds me of the old rogue trader figures. let me know what you guys think.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_2475.jpg
My third tactical squad are all going to be positioned fairly aggressively. I want them to be shooting their bolters as they charge their enemy.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e323/ilikebmxbikes/IMG_2476.jpg
I was going to initially use the Sternguard figure which made up the SGT. to complete my command squad but his pose didnt match those of the rest of the unit so he got drafted to lead this tac squad. I need to complete my command squad with a veteran looking figure with a flame thrower. any ideas for a base figure? the figure preferrably should be metal, convertable to be armed with a flamethrower and be standing firm.

Awesome stuff as usual! I have a few questions, if you don't mind. Where did you get the bare heads or did you sculpt them yourself? How did you achieve the pose of the rogue trader-esque marine? I'm guessing they were the legs from the devestator or command squad set, the kneeling ones, that you cleverly repositioned. Can you give a quick run down on how you did it? I love what you did with the Sternguard marine. I'm trying to think of a good candidate for a flamer, but nothing comes to mind immediatley that you haven't used already. I'm picking through my bitz box trying to find a good looking one. I can't wait to see what else you surprise us with :) Later!

I think that may be the figure. I just have to cut his plasma pistol hand off. the power sword arm bit will definatly be useful later. I also like that the figure is wearing a helmet- It would be cool to have at least half the unit wearing gold honor guard helmets.
The kneeling marine is a simple conversion. Its just a combination of the kneeling leg from the devastator/command legs set and a straight leg off of the regular tactical squad sprue. just cut the tac leg off at the hip and glue it onto the kneeling leg. then just sculpt a rock or something to go under the foot.
They are looking good can't wait to see more. I really like the one marine that is running and has his bolter raised as if he is firing it. I can't wait to see more.
Keep it up.

a few more pics. I got around to painting a few more figures but overall progress has been a bit slower than I like due to other commitments outside of the warhammer realm. Im going to be picking it up this next week and hopefully finishing this 10 man tac squad before I move onto my scouts. For scouts I am using the old metal figures instead of the new plastics. These figures are very dynamic and their headsculpts in my opinion are much better than the new plastics. The pewter scouts heads are also more proportionate with the masters of the chapters heads which will be used throughout the army as well. (instead of plastic heads that come on the sprus)

For blue, I will just start with a black undercoat, then regal blue, then ultramarine blue (leaving the cracks in the armor darker blue) then a highlight of a light blue, then blue ink. and depending on the colour, possibly taking black ink and going through the cracks in the armor again. that would be my initial approach, but I would only really know through doing it.
I dont water down my inks or paints unless if I have to. I just try to keep them in good shape. While painting coats of red, I often shut the bottle and shake it up inbetween painting to slow it down from getting sludgy.
Some great poses in that last batch. I'm not usually a fan of bare heads, but the guy with the huge scar looks really good!

very very good call on the heads. it is so worth the extra cost: look up the hassle free miniatures head packs - they are usually smaller than gw's - i use them for my female marines because of this. I find that using smaller heads gives the armour a larger profile that it deserves.

I got all my metal scouts. the entire squad except the SGT. will be old metal scout figures. I think they fit the proportions of the space marines better and the heads match up better to the masters of the chapter heads I'm using for all my helmetless figures. See the comparison pic below. The sgt. Im planning will be a plastic scout body, with a masters of the chapter bald head and a power sword. I think its always kinda weird how the Scout Sgt. figures always just look like the rest of the scouts. I want this figure to look like a fully battle hardened space marine. I ordered the plastic scout and will post pics of his construction.

I too am at the moment trying(ish) to paint the second company, so I'd have to selfishly say the Death Company, just as I'm not sure what I'm going to do with mine, and would like to see how you handle them...
Edit: As an extra question, how exactly are you planning to include your Landspeeder Tornado Squad within the company organisation? Are you going to use marines from the 7th/8th squads to crew them, or from another company (8th?), or ignore the organisation and just make them generic 2nd company marines with no squad markings. I know you probably haven't thought about it yet, but I was just curious...
Fantastic Blood Angels, really like the conversions and the paint jobs. It is a shame about the Red Ink but I have found that Windsor and Newton and Daler Rowney also do good substitutes and the W&N range also covers a lot of the other colours you use. Keep up the work
The squads are looking great, I would go with the Death company next. If you plan on gaming with them the death company will be key.

Small Update (Sorry for the poor color quality/ lighting with the pics)
My forgeworld stuff came .
I'd go with the traditional tan/desert pants for the scouts. Will you be adding chapter/company markings to the marines?
I finished a test mini for the scouts. I decided to keep them looking fairly classic, so I decided on just some Khaki pants. I will be decaling the entire army with their appropriate company/chapter markings. I just had to wait to get some 'Ard coat, which I picked up. I really like the old pewter scout models. They are very dynamic and their detail is amazing. I started the SGT. he is a plastic scout with a Masters of the chapter head and short power sword. He fits in well with the other figures, their heads are all proportionate and he is appropriately slightly larger than the other pewter scouts. I just need to do a little more work on him to distinguish him a bit more as a fully fledged marine. with my forgeworld box came some brass etched details, so maybe one of those Krux's with a blood drop would look nice on his shoulder pad.

I also found a game store in my area that had a large stock of old GW Red and yellow inks. So I am stocked with enough red ink for the entire army, just got to find some chestnut ink and I will be set.
Venerable Furioso- I had to convert a heavy flamer and melta gun out of a terminator heavy flamer and a combi-melta from the Space marine commander sprue.

the plastic scouts are slightly bigger with longer ape like arms and cave man heads. the pewters are more realistic, with smaller and better sculpted heads,
and proportionate arms. their detail and poses are also great. A sniper scout squad would probably benefit my army more in the game, but I had always loved the Close combat scouts so I had to get them. its also cool to have an entire unit of unique pewter figures- I have all six of the different close combat scout figures, the two shot gun figures, my plastic sgt, and am contemplating getting a heavy weapon scout just to round my squad to a full 10. Hopefully I will get them all painted up over the next week in between work, then its onto the Death Company and my Dread.

got a little more work done on the scouts. Six are mostly finished. Just have to paint the sgt, the two scouts with shotguns, and then I need to find one more scout. I will either get another close combat scout and convert him, or put a metal heavy weapon scout in there just to round it to 10. I will take better pics once i get them all finished and based. I am very pleased with these figures so far. The color of their pants will look good with their desert bases.

The aquila is just a black undercoat, then i paint the entire eagle in codex grey, then just take a detail brush with white and paint all the feathers... while leaving the codex grey in the cracks. sometimes i take a blue ink and go through the cracks if the emblem isnt defined enough.
The honour guard... yes you are right! i am one figure short. I am on the line between fitting a flamer thrower marine, or another close combat figure with a power weapon. I spend a lot of time thinking about what figures i want to incorporate into my units.. paying a lot of attention to the figures style and pose more than the effectiveness in the game. I try to see each unit as a whole. I cannot figure out what figure in the current space marine range would form as a good base to convert another honour guard figure.
I purchased a sternguard veteran to convert into the marine with a flamer. I built the figure, but his pose was a bit more aggressive than the other figures, so I scrapped him. I am considering buying the space marine's MK2 set and chopping them all up to get the 5th member. we will see.

for the bases I use "citadel modelling sand" . After gluing it to the base, I paint all of the sand with 'Scorched brown' followed by a bleached bone dry brush. After that, I just wash the whole base with a washed down dark brown and then paint the bases rim with Graveyard earth.
I am just using the citedel modelling sand. When I need to make rocks or slate, (like on the dreadnaughts base) I just cut up chunks of hardened Green stuff into the shapes of rocks and glue it onto the base. I often use only small amounts of Green stuff at once, but due to the process of mixing it, always end up with extra globs of it. Instead of letting the hardened green stuff go to waste, I always roll the extra into a rectangular blob. After it hardens, I just take a hobby knife to it and carve it up into pieces of slates or rocks to attach to bases.

my workspace is only clean because I just set it up. Normally it is a nightmare
Dreadnought is looking really good, like the pose and the paintjob is top notch. The army is really coming on well, inpiring me to get back to my own marines. As for the command squad, I think that another close combat marine would fit the squad best. Whilst not necessarily best in game terms it will fit in with the other figures well

This is excellent work, I too wouldn't mind the a flesh painting guide. The scouts and dread look awesome. Liking the idea with the dozerblade for the baal, seems likegoing at speed it would just crush enemies and obstructions right out the way. I've even dug up my old metal scouts now.
Great work.
Dozerblade is good for the predator, I have gone with the same fit for mine with the forgeworld uprades. The death company marine looks good, I like the use of the red scorpion vanguards as I am using them myself for veteran assault marines. The work on the artificer armour is promising, but I think that the crux on the chest looks too large for the rest of the figure and distracts from the rest of your work. Maybe some blood angel brass etch if you have some would be less intrusive

good news from GW
Games Workshop
The Games Workshop Newsletter 10.01.2010
In this issue: Incoming! Blood Angels
Incoming! Blood Angels
This April the Blood Angels will be re-launched with an all-new Codex and range of plastic and metal miniatures. One of the oldest and noblest of all Space Marine Chapters, the Blood Angels have stood fast against the enemies of the Imperium since the Great Crusade and it was their Primarch Sanguinius, who laid down his life to aid the Emperor against Horus in the final hours of the Warmaster’s rebellion. The new Codex explores the background and history of these superhuman warriors like never before, and contains new artwork depicting some of their greatest battles and most powerful champions.
The Blood Angels have always been a powerful close combat army and have been made even deadlier thanks to a range of specialist wargear, the ability to field Assault Squads as Troops choices, and more Dreadnoughts than any other Space Marine Chapter, including a Death Company Dreadnought and the fabled Furioso Dreadnought. The Sons of Sanguinius will be deep striking onto a tabletop near you this April – now’s the time to practice painting red.

Both the modeling and painting are superb. The Blood Angels armour is in my opinion the perfect red finish, not too bright, not too dark, and not orange. Also really liking your conversions.

Im kinda feeling your opinion on the crux. something always kinda seemed weird about that mini and i think you pointed it out. I actually made that over two years ago. I was originally going to do the BA 3rd company. Captain Tycho was always one of my favorite figures when I got into warhammer. I think it was his gold armour. the current tycho figure is a little small when up against the newer plastics so i set out to remake him. Later, i decided to do the 2nd company because 1. The GW decal sheets are 2nd, and 2., the captain lazarus that I had read about in some background stuff seemed cool and was not soo established that I could kinda make up a little of my own background and wargear kit. I dissasembled the tycho figure and havent done much with him since. Maybe when the new codex comes out, i can turn him into an Honour guard or an artificer tech adept to finish out my command squad.

with all the radical rumors of changes in the Upcoming Codex BA I am going to wait on building a few more units until the photos begin to leak. It would be horrible to spend all this time making these guys to have them become obsolete or outdated due to rule changes and new figures. I will continue the Baal then move onto another armageddon themed force until the blood angel pics begin to leak.
In the background books, the Salamanders role on armageddon two was to protect the supply convoys and civilian population of armageddon, a task often left unattended two by other chapters, who were more focused on destroying the orks and letting the helpless die for the greater good. The salamanders worked with the local imperial guard and gained their admiration and respect, something that would remain until they redeployed for the third war of armageddon.
My plan is to make a small salamander force, comprising of Vulkan He'stan, 20 tac marines, 10 sternguard, 10 vanguard w/o Jump packs, a predator, rhinos and a LR redeemer.
I will also be making a full 35 man company of steel legion I have sitting around and 4 chimeras.

im going GW's new black. the culln figure has some larger eyes, should look cool when i paint them red. if it looks lame, ill paint the afro american scheme.
i want to paint the figures skin chaos black, but highlight with browns, then do an ink wash. no idea how it will turn out. i started the green stuff on the figure. trying to sculp the same texture as the Vulkan figures cape is nhear impossible. i casted some of it and will try today to see if i can pull it off.

You know you're dying to greenstuff some Mr. T mohawks... Looks pretty sweet so far, battling against you is going to be very festive until the new BA codex comes out.
I also like the positioning of the hammer. And the small, bald head helps show how huge the marine shoulder pads really are.

i am currently working on a blood angels army as well. Then again who isn't now since the announcement of the new codex. I am using your method of painting red. I was wondering how in gods name do you get such good coverage with your blood red. Even over the Mechrite red, the BR is still coming out blotchy and streaky.
I use GW chaos black spray paint to prime my figures. the Mechrite red sticks on really well and I get an even coat using a 'GW standard brush.' I apply a generous amount of paint, but not too much as to clog up the detail of the figure. I then take blood red, which is a bit thinner than mechrite red, and apply a thin even coat. both these coats are pretty quick and go on evenly. Then I take the old GW red ink, which is discontinued, and I ink over all the red. Final stage, take badab black and go through all the details and cracks in the armor.
Please note: if your hands are greasy/sweaty, from food or naturally, and you handle the figure quite a bit while painting the two first coats of paint, the Red Ink will react with the grease or whatever form your hands and come out blotchy.
im going GW's new black. the culln figure has some larger eyes, should look cool when i paint them red. if it looks lame, ill paint the afro american scheme.

well good luck on the skin color (secretly hopes that you won't like the red eye version :chrome:)
if you need a tutorial on afro american skin, let me know and i will dig something out of my box.
what units did you plan for the salamanders force?
I also took a look at your older ultramarines and I have to say (even though the force looks really cool aswell) that you made HUGE improvements on the painting!
really good job!
how long are you taking for a BA marine average?

Got some paint on the salamader captain. I went with GW's current jet black skin. I like the chacters face but I feel with the black backpack the figure feels unfinished. I thought about it for a while and decided that what Im going to do to break up that black void is add a Salamander mantle, similar to Vulkan's where it will wrap up around the figures shoulders. I will paint the salamander skin the same as Vulkans. The white with the black should look nice.

I really like the figures sculpted cape. The folds look great and a salamander mantle just wouldnt fold like that. So instead of covering up the cape completely. I cast some salamander skin out of green stuff that i will make sort of hang over his shoulders and part of the cape. So it will be more like he is wearing a Salander mantle over a cape.

I plan to cut this out and with green stuff connect it and layer it over his shoulders. The castings are wet and the detail looks a bit soft, but it is actually very sharp.

its really easy to cast with green stuff. if you look closly at the SGT. you can see a Salamander icon on his chest eagle.
You just have the item you want to cast, it helps if it is somewhat flat. I just made a glob of Green stuff. put it down onto the table and got it pretty flat. I then USE WATER to wet my finger and smooth it out. Use lots of water so the green stuff and the item you are casting doesnt stick. I then firmly press the item into the green stuff. Press down into the green stuff. when you pull the item out of the greenstuff, Pull it as straight up as you can so it doesnt ruin your details. Then let the mold dry. then you just wet the mold and reverse the process to make a casting.

Here is a Salamander test figure. Its early morning and I didnt have enough light to get decent photos, but i took some anyways. The other four squad members are having their green layered.
These figures are considerably easier to paint than the blood angels. Speaking of which, I got the new white dwarf yesterday and it confirmed their release for april. So I figure I should be able to resume them hopefully in march when photos of their release begin to come out.

That's funny you say that. I originally painted the figure with red eyes but I changed them to green. I instinctively went with red and I agree they popped out a lot more, but the figure looked too much like a dark angel zo I went with GW's bright green. If u go up a few posts you will see the vulkan figure with red eyes, I later repainted his eyes too. I want my figures to match GW's Armageddon background and artwork.
Black Templars - I have been thinking about painting some up, but I got to get my blood angels company (on pause till the codex) my salamander detachment and my steel legion armored company finished first. I have to keep the buying/painting ratio balanced. If I do add Black Templars, I would paint a force based around their ground forces on Armageddon which would be led by chaplain grismaldus or whatever his name is.

I must say that your blood angels army has left me breathless. Really impresive, conversions and paintjob. Maybe the blood claws of the Captain are to rude for a blood angel, but I know that there isn´t another good model in these moments (the old metal may look better but...)

you might be right! i looked at the pics and they are a greenish yellow. The salamander in that pic, the lighting makes his eyes look darker than they are in real life. but looking at GW's pics, they are definatly a lighter more yellowish color. I will play around and post pics on what I decide on when the rest of the squad goes up.

I feel. I have been painting warhammer since the 7th grade (about 13 years now) and Blood Angels have long been in the game and in my memory. I really hope GW doesnt bastardize them and make them all radically angelic or something. I have high hopes for the plastic upgrade sprue Im mostly waiting for that or some images of figures with its contents to leak. I dont want half my army to have the new parts and the other half to not. Thats why I havent decaled the assault or second tac squad yet. If there are upgrade parts that are good, I will likely split both my squads up and use the new parts to build new marines which will fill the ranks making a 2nd assault and another tac squad.

What Ink do you use? Does it need diluting, or if not how do you avoid pooling? The reason I ask is that I recently have decided to stop using the GW Blue Ink (aside from it being oop!) as I'm now at the point where i dislike the lack of control I get from it; in this pic (http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll246/WarpWhisperer/Nov09027.jpg) you can see the pooling on the right hand and elbow, although it's more pronounced by the flash admittedly. (In more natural light (http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll246/WarpWhisperer/Nov09039.jpg) the contrast is a little less pronounced).
Yes - it seems liking BA and scaly marines go hand in hand; I just chose the evil version! ;)
Have you tried/thought of using Badab Black for the last stage?

Pooling - to avoid pooling. paint armor sections at a time and make sure you do it quick enough so the ink dries all at once. For example, if you paint half a marines shoulder pad with blue ink, and wait 30 seconds till it dries and paint the other half, you will have either a streak, or the new wet ink will react with the dry ink and leave a pool. You can see pools forming and if you use lots of ink, guide it with the brush evenly accross sections of the figure.
Some minor pooling will always occur, but if you use highlights and leave dark crevices in the armor you can make it look very unnoticeable. The salamanders have some light pooling. but I think it looks kinda cool. The blood angels for some reason have next no pooling. the Red Ink works amazingly, much better than any of the other old GW inks.
NOTE: If you eat when you are painting, make sure to wash ur hands before handling ur figure. if you get any grease on the figure, the ink will react and pool or come out blotchy.
Another interesting thing with Old GW inks, if you use their Dullcoat (it may have changed since the two years I last did this) and spray an even coat on a heavily inked figure, the coat will react with the ink and make all or most of the blotches go away and leave a nice even finish. I used to do this with my old ultramarines.
I do use baddab black for the final stage. Badab black is amazing. its more controlable and dries more evenly than the old inks and it dries with a Flat finish instead of the gloss like ones.
So the steps for my Blood angels and the Salamders
Black Undercoat-
Foundation (green or red)
Main color (snot green or Blood Red)
Highlight (scorpion green or Blazing orange)
Old school ink coat (Dark Green Ink or Red Ink)
Baddab black lining through the cracks.
Lovely stuff! Your ability to paint such vibrant colours is very impressive.

The flames are all freehand. Fortunately, the Salamanders are flexible enough to where the flames can vary from soldier to soldier. So they are pretty easy to paint, nothing near as difficult as trying to paint a defined chapter emblem. I will do a tutorial with the next batch of guys all primed up in a few previous posts.

Thanks. I dont have any space hulk terminators. I really like a few of the figures included in the set. It would be awesome to get some Space Hulk terminators, a regular terminator set, and some blood angels forgeworld shoulder pads and just chop them all up. Hopefully when the new BA stuff comes out, they will include some good bits to upgrade the current terminators to be more like the space hulk ones.
