The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2009-2010

Month 3

Hello chaps,

This is the thread on which you post your work for month THREE. (The work you have done in the month of OCTOBER).

Please make only one post (for each army) in the first week.

Your post should include:

1) The description and points of the unit. AND YOUR TOTAL POINTS SO FAR.
2) Any additional information you care to share with us about your painting.
3) A Dice roll. (Explained below)
4) Up to six photographs of your months work and the army so far.

The dice role.

With over 250 painters in this years Fantasy tale it would be impossible to try to comment on everyones work. (Although there are some who will try!) We considered splitting into army factions which would have left every one only posting on others painting the same army. Someone came up with the great idea of dicing for it. So you throw a dice and record the score. You then try and post comment on everyone who has the same dice roll as you. In return you can expect comment form all of them. This way each month we will all be commenting on a random selection of other painters work.
(Note: this does not stop anyone posting anything they like about anyones work regardless of the numbers rolled!)

A Word on using photographs

You can use up to six photographs (the maximum allowed in a post by warseer). To show us your months painting and the 'army' so far. The best size for showing your work is 640x480 (It can be smaller or you can use ‘thumbs’ which link to bigger pictures but they must not be bigger or it takes too long for the pages to load). The best thing to do is to resize them, wherever you are hosting your images, and then drag and drop the ‘img code’ directly into the text.

This month (NOVEMBERS) WIP Thread.

AFTER THE FIRST WEEK ... This thread will become the 'normal' ... comment and crit’ of others work, Work In Progress (WIP) pictures of your work as it develops, how you are getting on, seeking advice and encouragement for your ideas and your painting and generally chatting about the project, life and the cosmos.

However, please continue to only post your work for the first week. This is to give everyone a chance to post up their finished work before it gets lost amongst a sea of chat and WIP shots.

Thanks again to everyone who has signed up for this madness.

If you have not signed up yet…

If you have not signed up yet and would like to join us you are not to late.
Just post on this thread which army and how many points you intend to paint and then crack on.
Anything you post this month will count for last months painting.
(Although you will have to push on and paint something for next month to catch us up).

If you can not post anything this month …

DO NOT PANIC! … use a joker.
Busy lives calm down again, enthusiasm returns, time presents itself.
When it does 'push hard and 'buy back' your joker by painting extra. If your struggling post and say so. (don't just slip quietly away) You will be amazed by the posts of encouragement and support which come from your fellow painters eager to see you successfully complete this project. Most importantly ... 'Stick with it' ... The prize of getting your stuff painted remains worth all the effort.

What is it all about?

Do you want to paint a 2000 point army in the next 12 months?
Do you want to meet a great bunch, with the same goal who will encourage and support you throughout the process?
Can you do the same in return?
Are you completely bonkers?
Then you have come to the right place! :D

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2009 and finishing with their last post on the last day of July 2010.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys (and Infants!)

Because this is harder than you would think this year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month we have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 2000 points/month) and 'Boys' painting 1000 points/month).
I have also added a list for the 'Infants' or Warmaster painters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.
.....TRY AND MAKE IT CLEAR YOU ARE SIGNING IN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR POST SO I DON'T MISS IT!

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. Write much as you like. We love background. write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.1 Men : 0 Boys

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

CHARACTER: Dark Elf Master on Dark Steed with BSB
CHARACTER: Dark Elf Master on foot

BUILD/CONVERSION: Both are straight out the blister. The Mounted model is from GW direct, and the one on foot is from Avatars of War.

PAINTING: The horse is a mix of greys in the same method as my Pegasus in Month 1. The purples are highlighted up with Dwarf Flesh. The horse hair is dark flesh highlighted up to Terracotta.

The inside of the Master on foot’s cloak was Snakebite Leather highlighted up with Vomit Brown. The outside of the cloak is Orkhide Shade, highlighted up to Camo Green.

BASING: Gritty sand inked with Chestnut Ink, highlighted with Bleached Bone and then snow flock added.

HIGHS AND LOWS: The Avatars of War model is very nice and was relatively easy to paint, but the join from the sword hand to the arm was quite poor and I didn’t have the enthusiasm to greenstuff it properly.

The mounted model is also very nice, although a bit too cluttered for my tastes (particularly the banner). I’m quite pleased with how it came out, even if it is equipped with two hand weapons which are rather pointless rules wise!

POINTS: 197 Points.

TOTAL POINTS: 576 Points.

I like how from one side, the unit looks well armoured...
http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q438/tarjeiaasen/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/PA230396.jpg

... and from the other side it looks like they don't have any protective gear at all

A handful of the models have different weapons

Group shot:
http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q438/tarjeiaasen/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/PA270385.jpg

Background:
It has been a busy month for my general, Barack the Bringer of Change. Most notably, he was awarded the highly prestigious "Greatest Guy Ever!" award. In a brief commentary, Barack said: "Who? Me? But the only thing I've actually done so far is ousting the previous Warlord of the Amerikurgan, George the Lesser." The general seemed lost in thought for a moment, then continued: "Well, I guess that deserves an award."
Meanwhile, the decadent Slaaneshi lords of the tribe were upset because the only reapublican in living memory who had received the award was the demagogue Henry Kissflinger, whose claim to fame was getting the Amerikurgan army out of a miserable conflict with Clan Pestilence in Lustria (it was never known just how Kissflinger had managed that, but supposedly he ended up with a nasty rash in an unmentionable place).

The Marauder regiment, the Men of Unhappiness, joins the army as well this month. As any lower-ranking members of the Amerikurgan tribe, they have been indoctrinated to believe that their tribe is the best in the Warhammer World, in spite of the army having no proper missile units, no skirmishers and no flying units. Though being Slaves to Darkness, this truly is the land of the free!

Construction:
I had hoped to use the Horsemen's heads on all these guys, but unfortunately I didn't have enough of them, so I think something like half have the original heads with the horns trimmed off (I don't usually mind horns on helmets, but these ones look like bananas). The weapons are mostly from the Horsemen and a good deal of the shields are from that kit as well. The command models use a lot of bits from the Horsemen sprue as well, along with a cloak from the HE commander kit on the champion and a Chaos Knight shield.

Painting:
Skin is the new scheme I happened upon by accident. Start with a mix of VMC Flat Brown and VMC Brown Sand, highlighted with Brown Sand alone and further highlighted with Brown Sand and VMC Basic Skintone.
Everything else is pretty standard.

Basing:
As normal.

Highs this month:
I think this just might be the unit I am most pleased with from either season of the Tale.

...and lows:
Trying to get a good group shot now the army is too large to fit in my light box.
Wanting to repaint 25 older Marauders in the new flesh scheme.

Next month:
Scratch-built Hellcannon (I hope)

First page this time! :D

ARMY: Ogre Kingdoms (Boys League)

UNIT: 2 Ogre Leadbelchers with Bellower

BUILD/CONVERSION: Both are stock models. Using any head with an open mouth in a shouting kind of position to represent the Bellowers throughout the army (cant have them all the same!).

PAINTING: Same as usual.

BASING: Still waiting on my local store to reopen...

HIGHS AND LOWS: Quite happy with the rusty metal and the flames this month. Need to fix up the skin though, was a bit heavy handed with the silver paint :(.

The Golden Army

Unit: Chaos Warriors

Dice: 4

Total Points: In flux, my army build is changing
so not everything you see will make it in the list.
I have list A.D.D.

Build: Stock Warriors added Halberd armes from old Chaos Warriors
Unit champion is Games Day Chaos Warrior from 07 I think, standard
bearer is from old Hords box set.

Painting: Base in tin then a heavy brush of gold, cloak is deep red.
Left shields black and used gold to trim the chaos icon.

Base: Hope I did a little better. Glue some basing material, painted
a earth brown drybrushed some bone and spot glued some flock.

Gaming build: Halberd/Shield/Command 285, add Mark of Nurgle 315 add
Banner of Woe (Festering Shroud) 340.

Highs/Lows: A pleasure to paint, quick but toward the last few felt
more like work. Found a lot of mold lines AFTER I started painting,
I need to pay more attention in the build phase.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2458/4062685248_a6299d6f5d.jpg

Unit Champion:
"The First" was the lords first Captain in the old days, it was he who
first took up a Chaos Champions weapon in battle to strike down
his enemy when his own Empire weapon could not do the job, it was
he to talked his Lord into allowing his army to start using the armor
and weapons of Chaos against there foes.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2785/4062685338_bded832212.jpg

Banner Bearer: Banner of Woe, counts as Festering Shroud
Banner of Woe tells the story of the Golden army, its words swim on the
banner and anyone who starts to read can not stop until they finish
the whole story. As you can guess during battle this has issues.

Fluffy Bitz: Grey Seer Skittersqueek ,new recent leader of Clan Veskritter the legendary clan of all Grey furred skaven, looked out at his mass armies of ratsies from Cripple Peak. Within the first several days he had been able to align himself with the Plague Monks and Preists of Clan Pestilence, the geniuses of Clan Skyre, and the assassins of Clan Eshin. In a loud booming definately not skavenish voice he channeled the power of the Vermin Lords and yelled, "SQUEEK, SQUEEK KILL KILL!" his mass legions of clan rats charged into battle pillaging and destroyin all the vesties of the goblin strong hold over head providing much needed slaves.

Also does anyone have a suggestion for taking pictures in low light as now its winter I'm lucky if I can get a lucky light day here and artificial lights in my house are hard to come by. The attatchments look shiny but it real isn't its just the flash.

ARMY: Empire (2000 pts)

BACKGROUND:
For part one, see my post in last months TOFP (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4002682&postcount=15)

Standing before the grand altar, gazing down the aisle Wenzel could see a lumbering form detach itself from the shadows under the main gate's arches. As the creature made its slow approach, the polished armour covering its giant body cluttered with every heavy step, the plates casting reflections of the hundreds of scented candles litting the sanctuary.

After an eternity it came to rest at the lowest step leading up to the altar, and the chuch fell silent once again. Wenzel, only now realising that he was holding his breath, lifted his hands in a gesture of greeting in the name of Sigmar. Ever so slowly the giant got down on its knees, bowing its head. It took off its helmet and lifted its gaze to the priest standing by the altar. With a rumbling voice it spoke: "It's good to see you again. Brother"

Wulf Feuerhertz, older brother to the general, the warrior priest Wenzel, is a fearsome man to behold. At over 7', he dwarves most other mortal men. He has the strength of a bear, and a temper to match - slow to anger but ferocious once his blood is heated. Five years separate the brothers, but the differences between them runs deeper than that. While Wenzel, still an infant, was taken into custody of the holy church at the declaring of their fathers heresy, Wulf was adopted by the new commander of the border fortress. In truth Wulf was to have been kept hostage in case the heretic father showed up again and tried to rise in power once more, but the new commander, Dieter von Kroenig, truly treated Wulf as his own son.

Wulf grew up a sour, dull man, but he always performed his duties without complaining, always carrying out his tasks in a immaculate manner. Not one for conversations Wulf tend to spend all his spare time honing his weapon skills or hunting in the lower hills of the black mountains. The pelt of a white lion hanging from his houlders is said to be the skin of an especially vicious beast that for many months preyed upon the local farmers in one of the border villages, until Wulf found it and brought it down. As the story goes, he killed the monster with his bare hands. Some say this is nothing but rumours, but this is usually men that have yet to meet Wulf in person. More than one has changed his mind once passing into the shadow of the lumbering man, and none have so far dared call him a liar to his face.

As he heard that Wenzel would be the on leading the army assembling in defence of the province, Wulf asked leave of his foster father to lend his hand to the effort, and soon he was on his way to the mustering grounds. With him he carries an ancient banner, the only heirloom of the family to remain in the brothers hands, said to give courage and strength to the defenders of the true faith.

Among the ranks the soldiers scratches their chins and ponders what man would willingly submit oneself to the commands of a younge brother, but so far Wulf has been completely loyal to Wenzel. Many think this campaign will be the way in which the brothers will redeem their fathers shame, and bring glory once again to the empire in the name of its most holy protector, the warrior legend and sacred patron of all thing righteous and just; Sigmar.

UNIT: BSB with imperial banner

BUILD/CONVERSION: Banner and torso from Ludwig Schartzhelm, legs from empire general. Cloak is white wolf pelt, lions head and paw from high elf chariot. Some greenstuff.

PAINTING: A ridculous amount of different colours. I think I used almost every pot I've got...

STILL TO DO: Finished!

HIGHS AND LOWS: A bit top heavy, may be problematic in games. I'll have to magnetize the base and the movement tray.
Painting-wise it was all highs, but the banner was tricky beyond belief, lots of details and all the creases made it hard. But it turned ot nice.

This month I painted a chariot. Or uh, a "chariot". Didn't feel like cramming two screamers into a tight space on the base. So he's generating some sort of reality distortion that's mutating the ground as he goes. Or something. :p

Army: High Elves (2000 points)

Unit: 13 Swordmaster with Bladelord

Build/Conversion: Nothing, just the ordinary guys.

Painting: Same as before

Still to do: Making a movement tray for them.

Highs/lows: The models are simple to paint, but since they are so similar to each other it gets a bit repetitive and boring after a while.

Dark Elves

Unit:20 Black Guard with Full Command.

Points: 295

Army Total Points: 494 + 295 = 789

Models: 20

Build/Conversion: I converted the standard top using the one from the new Cold One Knights frame. I quite dig it!

Painting: This is the first time I added blue to the purple as variation. I think it works pretty well.

Highs/Lows: These figures were a delight to paint, as they are my favorites from the whole range. It was a nice change after painting all those core units :-). The high point cost puts me one month ahead of schedule, which gives me more time to paint some empire dudes! No real lows for my dark elves this month.

Dice Roll: 5

The unit picture will have to wait, as I seem to have left that SD card at home and I'm away now... Stupid is and stupid does ;). I'll post an army shot next month too!

Warriors Of Chaos
Work for month #1.

Unit: 10 Chosen/Warriors of Chaos, Halberds (or great weapons), Shields, Full command.

Points: 200 (a bit more if chosen)

Conversions: Pretty much built from the box with some minor weapon conversions.

Painting: A repaint of some models i had from a while back. First guys I've painted since coming back to the hobby after a couple of years out.

High/lows: Was nice to put a brush to some plastic again, they really could be better with more practice time but didn't have all that much time.

And this is my work for month #2.

Unit: Sorcerer Lord on Chaos Steed (with some magical goodies)

Points: 300~ (just a rough guesstimate cause won't always have the same stuff)

Current points: 200 + 300 = 500~

Highs/lows: I like how the "writing" on the book has come out and is a simple conversion but think it looks alright. Was pretty simple paint job but he is gona be used always as an undivided wizard switching between either Shadow or Death.

Hey there! :)
First month's work for me - Or well preview of it + existing army (the one I'm expanding) and WIP. :)

Army: Skaven

Size: Currently ~2300 points

Goal: 3000-3500 points

Amount of points / month: ~200

Colourscheme: Green and blue - Old part of the army's green, the new ones are going to be blue.

This month's work: Globadiers (converted) and a Warlord in Warpstone Armour (Almost done, minor conversion)

Points: Unknown due to new book being released.

Conversions:
Globadiers: Built from 6th ed Clanrats, with their hands replaced with open ones from the Zombie kit. For globes I used airsoft gun BB bullets (6mm), and for their 'protective' gear, I used green stuff and various bits (Black Orc standard, Magazines from Cadian heavyweapon teams and more.)
Warlord: He lost his normal tail-banner, so I replaced it with two Clanrat shields glued together to form a sign.

Everything looks great. Unfortunately I'm going to have to drop out. I made a good run this month but couldn't finish. Also it felt like cheating to paint up a high point lord in a 2000 point painting project just to get the points. Then my WFB opponent is selling all his stuff so there was less incentive to get it done. In all, I doubt I'll be missed since I haven't produced anything yet.

Keep up the great work!

Bretonnians

Models: 5 Grail Knights with a Standard Bearer (no musician needed, these guys will never lose combat! :D)

Background:
The creature laughed.

Sir Francis, knight of L’Anguille, looked on as another of his Bretonnian comrades were slaughtered by this vampiric foe. Clad in crimson, ancient armour he had taunted the knights into honourable combat one by one and had cut down skilled warriors as though they were mere children. Despair welled up inside the minds of the entire Bretonnian army, what man could possibly stand before this foe’s speed or strength?

Then, a figure strode forth from the ranks who stood tall amongst the shallow shoulders of his brethren. A nimbus of light seemed to play around the man whose face was hidden beneath an ornate helm of gold. Francis then realized who this was; it was Sir Audric, word had passed around the camp that the legendary knight had come but Francis had not believed it was true.

The Grail Knight kept his gaze firmly upon the vampire and in a swift but measured motion unsheathed his shining blade. Francis could not draw his gaze from this enchanted warrior but quietly he doubted even Audric could stand before the Vampire.

Francis spoke in hushed tones. “We cannot fight such a foe…”

“That is true.” Audric said. “You cannot.” His voice bore a lyrical tone that whilst authoritative, was somehow comforting – Francis noted that he could not detect a hint of fear in this holy champion.

The Grail Knight spurred his enormous white charger onwards, racing to meet the Vampire who seemed elated as yet another challenger appeared. There was a great moment of tension just before the two opponents blades met, but in an instant the ringing of steel sounded across the field. Blows were exchanged faster than Francis could follow; a great cheer erupted from the army as it seemed as though the vampire had finally met a foe worthy of his time.

Audric expertly manoeuvred his horse about his opponent and despite the knight’s face being hidden, Francis swore he could see the eyes of Audric, burning with holy fire. It was in that moment that the Knight of the Realm understood just how outclassed he was, he saw before him a combat worthy of gods and there nothing he could do but stare on in awe.

Francis’ body tensed as he saw the vampire get inside Audric’s defenses, casting him from his steed like a man would toss a toy. The knight began to fear that he would see this champion of the Lady defeated but as the vampire moved in for the killing blow, Audric was up in an instant, his blade flashing with light as it was plunged into the chest of the vampire, the enchanted sword impaled the creature and from the exit wound a fierce light burst forth. The hated foe howled in such a way that it filled the entire Bretonnian army with terror – the fury of such ageless hatred was not meant for mortal ears. Audric pulled free his blade, the vampire falling to the bloodied soil. Before his tainted flesh had even met the ground, the creature was already crumbling to dust, his remains being cast upon the wind.

The Grail Knight sheathed his blade, mounted his steed and spurred him away from the battle. The army could only cheer as he vanished into the thickening mists.

Francis made a prayer to the Lady for delivering this savior.

Points: 210

Building/Conversion: Straight out of the box, these guys are great models.

Painting: Enjoyed painting these guys quite a bit. I wanted to make them stand out from the rest of the army so I gave them all golden armour and chainmail and kept their caparisons free of dirt and mud to give them a mystical-type sheen. Plus, the grass beneath them is all lush as opposed to the burnt static grass I used on

Basing: Same method I always use but I wanted to keep the Grail Knights looking different so I gave them lush grass on their bases as opposed to the burnt grass I used on the other nights.

Highs and Lows: Not much to report here, enjoyed them quite a lot and I’m very pleased with the result.

Still to do: The only thing I plan to do here is to go over some of the lances once more (some of the paint chipped in transport). And I also want to re-do the free-hand on the banner, give them something a little more fancy.

Total Points Thus Far: 662

Next Month: I plan to finish 40 Men-at-Arms... hopefully I get it done. Wish me luck!

Army; 2000+Pts Averland Empire

Unit: 6x Knights Panther of the Inner Circle with full command group

Points = 196

Total Points so far: 681

Background - After the defeat of Caliph Jaffar in the terrible crusades against Araby, a unit of the newly created Order of the Knights Panther pursued the broken remnants of the Caliph's forces through the Dark Lands, to the southern edge of the Steppes, where they made their final stand against the gallant horsemen of the Emperor. This futile gesture was crushed mercilessly under hooves and lancepoints. The stench of blood attracted the most fearsome hunting cats the Knights had ever seen, and soon they were fighting for their lives as the tigers developed a taste for manflesh. The handful of survivors from the horrific attack skinned the tigers, and returned home to tell their tale, adorned with the hard earned trophies.

Build/conversions - nothing fancy, just replaced the banner for the old style state troop banner.

Highs - enjoyed the painting

Lows - the models themselves are very poor, by modern standards of plastic miniatures - seriously overdue a revamp.

Hello everyone!

Army: Beasts of Chaos, 1000 Points.

Painted this Month: Wargor, Tuskgor Chariot, Gouge-Horn, and 2 Bestigors.

Background/Theme: Still nothing concrete. I plan to spend more time on this for the next entry.

Build/Conversion: Some conversions this time. The Chariot is looted from an Orc warband. I added a few bits to it here and there, chains, skulls, etc. The Bestigor driver is a metal "Crazed Minotaur Cultist" model I was given by a friend. I greenstuff'd some hair on the Gouge-Horn and gave him an axe to match the rest of the Bestigors. The Wargor's base is my first experiment with using greenstuff to make texture rather than basing sand; it came out pretty nice.

Painting: Nothing special here. Same Devlan Mud worship and rusted metal. I won't take much credit for the model in the Chariot- he was given to me mostly painted by a friend, and I didn't want to strip his good work! I added some highlights and washes, and played with gore effects for the first time using some gloss varnish to make him look freshly soaked. I like the way it turned out. His skin tone is lighter than the rest of the horde, but it only makes him stand out that much more.

Basing: Same as before, though I am adding smooth stones made of GS here and there.

Still to do: These dudes are finished, although there are probably a few touch-ups needed across the board.

Highs: I'm proud of my clunky Chariot! It isn't perfect, and it was a pain to convert, but it looks pretty menacing! The Wargor model w/Great Weapon was a blast to paint. I'm starting to paint a bit quicker, too.

Lows: Again, the Chariot. Its a tad awkward. I didn't plan it out as well as I should have, and it doesn't quite rest on the backs of both Tuskgors. The driver is HEAVY, and I'll have a little bit of "counts as" explaining to do when I start gaming with it. I sorta haphazardly based the thing, and I'll probably have to redo it once the urge to chuck it out the window passes.

Points: 193 without upgrades. (Whoa!)

Hi everyone. Well I have nothing again, but instead of jokering I think its best if I gracefully back out. THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

3x warplock jezzails
6x gutter runner
1,5x giant rats

BUILD/CONVERSION: Nothing special. As some of the jezzails' shields were missing I replaced them with random shields. There are two rats from Necromunda and I'm also using old assassin models as unit champions for gutter runners (there's going to be two teams).

PAINTING: Devlan mud, some devlan mud and then some devlan mud. That's the "paint" for skaven horde... :) I'm seriously beginning to doubt my own sanity of choosing a horde army for this challenge. And one that is going to be revised in a matter of days I believe. But they ARE the master race. So I'll stay with them to the bitter end!

BASING: Totally WIP

HIGHS AND LOWS: I'm not troubled with "competition quality" so I actually managed to paint most of these guys in a few days. That was great. That still doesn't take the horror of having to paint dozens of these guys when I finally have the nerve to move into the core choises...

POINTS: 197 Points (counting half of the next giant rats posse, and two gutter runner unit champions)

BigJon - Impressive unit. Liking the great banner and unit champion. I see you have the same problem as I have to remember the remove the casting lines. They jump up in the close images. I'd also add some more high lights and shadows especially to command group as they tend to stay on the table the longest. Good work all in all. Keep it up!

Army: Orcs and Goblins (2000pts)

Background/Theme: retro orcs and gobs

Mugrats ‘ardboyz-orc bigguns choppas shields light armour full command
You got to be tough to be in Mugrats ardboyz, he don’t like no wimps. If an aspiring orc doesn’t make his standard and survive the forthcoming kicking he is sent to join the stinkin useless runts.

Skeelids hoods- night goblins shields nets fanatics full command
Sneeky sneering skeelid is a bit of a personality around the camp. Him and his boyz are always up to mischief and love winding up anyone lower in the hierarchy than themselves, meaning clopses runtlings.

Cyclops runtlings- orcs choppas shields light armour full command (13)
Beaten and captured by Mugrats ardboyz tribe, were given the choice to join the growing waaagh or die. Chose to live and fight under the new banner but are berated at every opportunity by the other greenskins, currently ranked lower than skeelids goblins. The mutant orc leader (Cyclops) is finding this hard to take, he is leading his orcs on all the desperate hopeless missions in the hope that they will lose the runtling tag and gain some much needed respect and give that sneering and grinning Skeelid a right kicking in the process.

Unit(s): 13 orcs f.c shields, 2 netters, 2 night goblins.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

A new plastic stegadon arrived this month so that didn't help me concentrate on Bretonnians but i got there in the end. Great work this month so far by everyone, pics are looking great!

CHARACTER: Bretonnian Lord 205 pts (to make up for last months joker)
UNIT: Knights of the Realm 216 pts

BUILD/CONVERSION: Both straight out of the box/blister.

PAINTING: Nothing too special worth mentioning here.

BASING: Only done on a few so far, same as rest of army: codex grey + snow flock and PVA + static grass.

STILL TO DO: Shields on most of the knights are just bluetacked on and also need the metal on them painted and freehand or transfers added. One knight still needs touching up and metal highlights. Add gold trims to some knights.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Had to rush the last few days to get these finished in time but i'm quite happy with them but i'd still like to go back to add to them at another time.

NEXT MONTH: I'm hoping to build/paint a trebuchet out of wood and plasticard, if i can get some wood that'll suit the job. Also looking for some minis for crew and any good blueprints for making one if anyone knows of any?? If this fails ill paint 16 archers.

Paint other stuff during the month, while doing bits and pieces on them. So when they're finally finished, I'll use them to buy back my Joker.

Already beginning on this months work, a bit of basing on my Flings and I'll be set to prime and start painting.

Dice Roll : 5

Hi all, Sorry I havnt been able to post yet just moved to uni and so everything is a bit hectic atm.

Is it ok if I change to Lizardmen instead of VC, I've pretty much finished my VC although havnt got many pictures so I feel like I would be more motivated to get my lizardmen done instead of just post up already done work.

I realise I should be up to 600pts by this month but am not quite there yet (no doubt will sort this out when I do a big thing of some description, so feel free to assign joker months or what no however is best)

Anyway onto the actual post:

UNIT: 2 Terradons (60pts)
UNIT: 9 Skirmishing Skinks (63pts)
UNIT: 12 Saurus w/ musician (150pts)
CHARACTER: Skink Priest lvl2 (100pts)
CHARACTER: Saurus Scar Vet, LA, SH (93pts)

BUILD/CONVERSION: Terradons are old models I gto given with no riders so have got javelin armed skinks riding them instead, apart from that straight out of box/blister. I apolagise for the odd numbers these are all from old sets I had lying about unpainted and will hopefully be rounded out in the coming months.

PAINTING: The Saurus are done in scorched brown skin highlighted with graveyard earth, with blue scales (Regal/Enchanted/Ice). The Skinks are done with the same blue as the saurus for the skin but red scales instead (red gore/blood red). The terradons are done with Catachan Green and increasing amounts of rotting flesh added to lighten the colour, wings with a creamy white (various graveyard earth/bleached bone/ skull white mixes)

BASING: As can be seen on the bases of the terradons I am in the process of added partly stone tiling on the bases (from the temple cities) the rest will be sanded with little jungle type plant things (if i can find any that is)

HIGHS AND LOWS: Lots of different colours!!!! I finally got a chance to paint lots of different colours - one of the reasons I picked lizardmen. Lows - Am at unni so no good lighting or camera so I apolagise now

ARMY: The Pox-Pox Horde (Skaven, not Daemons as it says in the summary - changed my mind, sorry for the confusion ;))

UNIT: 4 Plague Censer Bearers, 18 Giant Rats

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of blisters, no conversions on these at all.

PAINTING: So extremely simple that I'm too ashamed to tell you! Let's just say I've discovered the benefits of the new washes at last

BASING: Waiting to get some snow flock, or to try out baking soda. Painted them all white for the time being to get the general idea across!

HIGHS AND LOWS: They're so quick to paint I might step this army up to the men's league (while moving my empire down to boys...), highly satisfying! I've almost got enough stuff painted to buy back my two jokers as well, but I'll do that next month. No real lows.

And for my Empire this month I'm afraid I'll have to use my first:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ARzC8ohBY0E/SdGH8bBNhBI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/URH8jUh1lsA/s400/pony-joker.jpg

I've got almost all the stuff painted, it's just that the one model I've NOT painted is worth 130-ish points... It does make next month easier though, and I'll most likely be able to buy this joker back then :)

edit: Oh, and for completeness sake: My dice roll for Empire is 2.

Army: Dwarfs X2

Units: 20 hammerers w/ full command and shields, 10 thunderers w/ shields, organ gun.

Highs: Good to get the hammerers done and really seeing the army come together.

Lows: The hammerers are VERY dark since they were from a new green pot that I hadn't watered down yet. At least you don't notice much when the lord is in the unit since he is the focus.

For points I'm am WAY ahead of schedule (those that read my battle reports know just how much I have painted) so Harry please just keep Dwarf 1 and 2 as if they are on schedule and I'll just post little bits each month.

With that in mind next up will just be an organ gun and 10 quarrellers.

Dice Rolls be dammed!

With so many dropping out I am going to comment on everyone who has posted so far.

@Derv :
Well done for getting in first. I love the mounted model. Too cluttered for painting easily but a great mini.

@Avian :
best unit of marauders I have ever seen, love the variation in weapons and the mini diorama of the drinkers is inspired. Reminds me of the Night Goblin army in the OG collectors guide. Full of fun and very cool.

@Doi :
Flames do look good and I love the stripey trousers.

@BigJon :
Not a gold armour man myself but that unit look great. I also love the Standard. Very …. Chaotic.

@jahorin :
That army is coming together so fast. I love painting bone. Great idea getting the movement trays done as you go along.

@Bluesabre:
Yup tried that. ‘Inside out’ is all very well but ……Still, looking good. Nice bit of freehand on the banner too.

@Dr. Mole :
I love that old mage. In fact I love all those old Jes Goodwin classics. Micro balloons is the way to go for snow.

@C-Coen :
Love the whole leopard scheme. If you had described it too me I would said it would never have worked but it looks great. It will look fantastic across the whole army. Nice one.

@Kryzek :
Nice unit. Those old minis still look great. Nice horses and skin looks OK to me.

@Dark Apostle :
Simply … Stunning.

@Discord :
But enough blue to tie in nicely to the rest of them. It is clearly a reality distortion I could tell right off as soon as I looked at it. Great mini. Lacks nothing for not having big screamers.

@Desetr rain:
High Elves are repetitive. But they do look good done because the whole army are all so similar they look very uniform. Boring to paint but part of the appeal of the finished army.

@Matrim_Cauthon :
I’ll be honest the basing is not doing it for me but the painting is wonderful. The robes the armour. Fantastic job.

@H20 :
Two great months work. I don’t know how you are painting the armour but it looks fantastic. Not bad for your first unit back painting again. Love the bone horns the best. That’s is defo the way to go.

@Ishivia : Great looking table. Love the conversion. Best use of BB gun pellets in this months tale. :D

@D35t0y3r :
Those guys look great. Incredible work on the checks. I can see I need to have another go at my night goblins and adds ome of this it looks great on yours. And I love the blue ‘warpaint’. Very cool.

@Alathir :
They look great. I know they are all supposed to have different coloured heraldry and all that but they do look good with a tight scheme like this. Whole army starting to look very cool together.

@Fabius bile :
Nice unit. Great work on the tiger skin. The banner is amazing too. I would never try something that detailed. The army as a whole is great. I especially like the Cannon diorama.

@Ego Ninja :
I can’t believe your trying to use moving house and getting married as an excuse. :D

@8BitMummies :
I love your beastmen. So Dark and gory. Thay look just rignt. The guy in the chariot seems a bit bright (pink) by comparison but I wouldn’t paint the skin again just yet maybe when you have done the minos etc (with more skin) he will tie back in with the rest of the army.

@Fluffystuff :
Incredible. I want them. The jewels on the front look amazing. The bases are the best thing I have seen in ages.

@Jim :
If that isn’t your best job on the horses I look forward to seeing what you do on a good day. They look great. So does the rest of the painting and the basing. Marco is a great choice for enngineer.

@Warlord GG :
Great conversion. Nice to have so really individual models in an army. Especially for the characters and he’s a real eye catcher.

@doc_chthulu :
One of my favorite posts this month. If only because eI have some of this stuff to paint and was wondering where to go with it. Brilliant stuff. Really motivated me to get my Skaven stuff done seeing this so thanks for that. Love the diffent shields for the jezzails.

@Smokemeakipper :
I thought I knew old minis but even 5 don’t recognise all those old Orcs. They still look good with a nice paint job. Lovely to see these old minis given the attention they deserve, A real treat. Thanks very much.

@rhys60 :
looking good … all very dark and brooding exactly as brettonians should be … although that could just be the dodgy photography. :D

@ Liam Taylor. :
Your army is starting to come together really well. The blue looks great and I love the extra attention on the bases … always worth the trouble.

@Beatthebeat. :
More great looking Skaven and so motivating to read you saying how quick you are finding them to paint. Those rats look great. I was thinking they must have taken ages. Really makes me want to crack on with mine. Well done you.

@Emperor Norton. :
Don't burn your brushes just yet. :D I love the simple scheme the metalics are wonderful. The face on the SB is just great. I am not sure what your worrying about. The army all together is going to look great.

@Malorian :
Always liked green as a scheme for Dwarves and these look great. The brown on the beards looks fab and should be the predominant colour but I wonder if a little variation ... just the odd black or blonde beard wouldn't break things up a bit and add a little something to the big blocks.

Well done to everyone who has painted and posted. Not easy sticking to the task.

Come on the rest of you ... long winter nights ahead ... nows the time to get stuff painted ... you know you want to!

Ok here we goo..

ARMY: Vampire Counts

UNIT: Spirit Host, Cairn Wraith and 3 Tomb banshees

PAINTING: The ghostly figures are space wolf grey drybrushed white. The grey hands and face for the spirit host were a late addition as i thought they needed something to define them and i recall someone doing that once.

BASING: Spirit host has the new basing style. the other need to be drybrushed bleached bone and have the grass applied. I like the effect of the green grass by the rocks will contine to use that.

STILL TO DO: Complete bases

HIGHS AND LOWS: Worse month in a long time - but i wont bore you with the details

POINTS: 340

TOTAL POINTS: 595

DICE-ROLL: 2 (but will comment on all)

Additional: Well i painted more about what i wanted this month rather than a coherent force.. and it was more than 200 points but hey i only got 55 last month so it evens out somewhat. I do like the new baseing style but am not looking forward to redoing my zombie horde.. time will tell. I still have partially completed 2 more cairn wraiths and 20 skellies. Will finish these off and maybe do some rebasing of my older painted minis if time permits. Since i have yet to joker this army i may let it slide for nov to try and play catchup with one of the others instead. Once my exams are over i'll make my decision. now without further ado the pictures.

This is this months painting
No army shot since the basing style is so different and it looks well silly

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l73/hazpak49/VC/oct2.jpg
this is just a close up of the spirit host base. i really do like the green in the rocks. just sprinkled some green grass over while the glue was still not dry.

In the next fews days i'll do a comparison shot of some undead steeds one just white and the other white with devlan mud just to get peoples opinion. I dont think though i will use it on the cairn wraiths though. It will set them apart from the rest of the regular undead if i like this method that is.

Army: Dark Elves

Dice Roll: 3

Unit: Dark Riders

Character: Hag

Painting - again, lots of foundation paints.I'm enjoying highlighting the handful of models I have to paint for a Dark Elf army but the green ink is still too shiny! I gave the Hag's skin a thin black wash to tone the flesh down from the orange tan the test model had.

Basing - bit of an issue - I don't actually want lush jungle bases...because I want them to match my grey board. On the other hand I don't want to have green dark elves in Nagorath....

Still to complete: Bases...for the whole army!

BUILD/CONVERSION: Just the basic savage orc shaman model

@Basilbrush:
It may have been a bad month for you but you still got some painting done and that is actually the key too success to keep plodding on even in difficult months. i do like the basing although I usually prefer darker soil. As for bone I start with snakebite leather and work my way up through bleached bone to white just for some variation in colour on the bone and a grubbier look.

@Morglum Necksnapper :
Wowsers! Great mini. who made it i don't recognise it at all. Very nicely painted. (Especially the eyes and the colour change on the wings).

@Braad :
It may have taken a while but it was a great result. It is hard getting back into painting after a while but i often think starting with a single mini and making a great job of it is the way to get your eye back in rather than getting booged down with a big unit and being disappointed.

@Sparks. :We miss you too. Go on Join in with 100 points of something.

@Arobe. Love the wraithes the basing is perfect. The ghouls look fantastic. Again amazing attention to the bases. i'll say your "getting somewhere". This army is going to look incredible finished. Do you not paint your base edges? (Also you are killing us with the size of those pictures. Please see first post about size).

Well, thanks!
I think its just a matter of doing something different for a bit of time was just what I needed to keep me going, actually. And after shooting enough zombies and settling a bit into the busy life of a working man, I found myself with a bit of spare time again.

And a good thing that I'm getting myself into gear, as I hope to get all my unpainted characters done this tale! And that's a lot of them...

@ Sparks
You can also just join and show what you do. If you can't live up to 100 points, and its fine with yourself, than its also fine with us. You just will be noted down in the "laggin' behind" group instead of with the rest, and if you don't reach 1000 or 2000 points, you won't be in the hall of fame at the end. But hey... who cares? You get to show your stuff to many people!

Each model painted is 1 more to the tally... and as of right now, we together already painted 47034 points this tale!

I'll try to get a bunch of comments done one of these days too.

Also, something for the whole lot of you... I placed a link in my sig to a pic that has all the names of people who completed last years tale, so they don't sink away in the depths of time forever, but can be remembered and honoured!
I'm thinking about see if it is possible to make some kind of small website, with the same names, but also a gallery of armyshots. What about it? Good plan? I can stack each year in there as we go.

@ Harry (O&G): Yay, Harry’s back! Missed your work last month, hope things ease up enough for you this month to be able to play a bit of catch up. Excellent work from you again, the Squig Lobber in particular is fantastic. Is there going to be a terrain entrenchment for the Doom Diver too? And I love the little bugger clambering over the rock to get at the next round of ammo.

@ derv: Have to agree with you in regards to the AoW model being a pain in the ass to put together. The sword hand and the belt buckle bit drove me bonkers. How did you paint the gold on the Master on the horse? It looks amazing.

@ Avian: The Marauders are fantastic. The champion conversion would have to be my favourite. And I know it is probably the flash or the camera not getting the colours right without the lightbox, but in the group shot the blue on your knights looks stunning. Better than they are normally (though nothing wrong with them as they are) I reckon.

@ BigJon: Great work. The runes on the banner are really nice.

@ jahorin: Very nice. The head-piece on the Liche priest is quite eye catching. The army is beginning to shape up nicely.

@ Blue Sabre: Ha, I bet painting the skin on those guys last will be one of the biggest decisions you’ll regret when painting this army. I hated doing it on mine and I painted the skin first! Your freehand work on the banner is excellent. Is that the last of the older models you have left to paint then if you’re starting the new Corsairs next?

@ Dr. Mole: Great work. The face is really well done, the shading around the eyes makes her look particularly hawk-like which I think suits the model. Are you putting the snow on the base with the model attached or unattached? If the model is attached it can make things difficult. I don’t know if it was deliberate or not, but your snow looks kind of lumpy. Try mixing in some water and then smoothing it out on the base with a wet winger if you want a smoother finish.

@ C-Coen: Re-roll denied! Your skin colour looks really good over the whole army. The kroxigor looks ace.

@ Krzyek: Really nice, your skin tone is great. Good job.

@ Queekvondrak: Looks good. For some constructive criticism, I think the purple robes could do with either another highlight or shade (I think another shade would better suit the model) and the ropes around his waist and arms could do with being a bit lighter in colour (maybe Khemri brown?) to provide a bit of contrast with the robes. As for getting better pictures, first of all don’t use the camera flash unless absolutely necessary as it tends to wash out your colours. Try using a white background, I use a piece of paper from my printer resting up against my water cups for painting. Get your hands on a natural light globe to supply a decent light source for you pictures and use the macro function on your camera (the flower symbol). Take your pictures from further away and crop them in something like photoshop. Hope that helps.

@ Dark Apostle: I’ve been waiting for you to finish this guy, and you have not disappointed. The banner is stunning and I’m just in awe of the gold griffin rider. Not much else I can say, except I want to see more...

@ Discord: Very nice conversion. The painting is great once again, but I think the staff needs to be a colour other than white. It looks a bit unfinished to me.

@ Desert Rain: Great work on the swordmasters. Your colour scheme is starting to come into its own now that the army is taking shape.

@ Matrim_Cauthon: That blue and purple scheme is something I’d have never imagined Black Guard in (I mean, where is the black :p) but it works well. The banner conversion is really nice too.

@ ≡ H20 ≡: Took me forever to find the three horizontal line symbol to type your name properly... It all looks good so far, especially the horse skull great weapon, that was an inspired conversion.

@ Ishivia: Those Globadiers are excellent. How did you paint the orbs?

PAGE 2

@ D35t0y3r: Great work, the checks on the shaman were an excellent choice. Combined with the glowing eyes it looks really good.

@ Alathir: What, so good they actually make the grass lusher by their very presence? :p The uniform colour scheme is looking fantastic, much prefer seeing Brettonians this way. The horse whose head sticks forward on the grail knights though, is it me or does he look scared? The white on his eye seems a bit big.

@ Fabius Bile: Fantastic. The cloaks and the banner are really well done. The tiger on the shield in the banner looks like a zombie though...

@ 8bitMummies: I really like the chariot. The Crazed Minotaur Cultist makes for a better crew then normal I think.

@ fluffystuff: Once again, I’m stunned. I prefer the skin of the previous cold one, but I much prefer this one’s Howdah. And don’t get me started on the bases...

@ Jim: The horses look fine, don’t know what you’re not happy with. Marco Colombo came out really well. Especially the gems.

@ Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Excellent conversion, Gobbla makes for a nice Great Cave Squig. Looking forward to a group shot.

@ doc_Cthulu: I think losing the Jezzail shields was for the best, the random nature of the current ones looks better. Are we going to be seeing any of the new Skaven models in your army? Maybe a Hellpit Abomination conversion?

@ smokemeakipper: Very nice. I wouldn’t even pick those Night Gobbos as classic models from across the table. Need to lose the bright green movement tray though!

@ rhys60: Nice work. This is turning out to be one of the most earthy Brett armies I’ve seen. Earthy is probably the wrong word, as is dull, maybe muted would work better. Regardless, point is I like how it is turning out.

@ LiamTaylor: Great stuff, I really like the Terradons. What are you studying at Uni? While you’re going back, I’m about to finish for the year and have a nice three months off!

@ BeatTheBeat: Very nice. Are you going to go for a full snow cover or just patches?

@ EmperorNorton: As pessimistic as ever I see :p. Great work on both fronts this month. I really like the BSB in particular.

@ Malorian: Nice work. I didn’t even notice the darker green until you pointed it out. How many points have you got painted for your Dwarves in total now (TOFP and the rest)?

@ basilbrush: I think the new basing scheme is excellent. The ethereal are looking good, but the grey hands/faces could do with another highlight I think.

@ Morglum Necksnapper: Is that a GW model? Not one I recognise. The colour transition on the wings came out well.

@ Braad: About time you painted something! Now we just need silverstu to get back on the painting bandwagon. The war paint came out really well, good job.

@ sparks: It’d be nice to have you back, hope you can at some point.

@ arobe: Nice work. I quite like the green Wraiths. Ghouls are great too.

Comments for those who rolled 1:
@C-Coen: They look really poisonous. Great attention to the base on the Kroxigor.

@Queekvondrak: Cool sword and spear. The cloak qould do with a layer of matt varnish though.

@Fluffystuff: Awsome. No – awsome x 2! Best stegadons I’ve seen so far, the bases are just ridiculously cool.

@Malorian:Nice colour combination on the dwarves. They look very nice, but maybe some static grass for the bases? If you don’t want any more green, why not try some bleached or burnt grass?

Additional comments:
@Harry: Squig-lobber looks real cool. Funny! I just love the snotlings ambushing the squig between the rocks! Very nice basing on the lobber and doom-diver.

@Doi: Nice leadbelchers. I agree with you – metal and flames look real good. These will rock for sure once you get the bases done! Noce to see ogres eith non-grey skin.

@Dr Mole: I love that model. Do you have the old chariot as well?

@Discord: Cute!

@Alathir: Splendid! They look like they ready for a glorious charge! Nice story too.

Joker from me this month as I haven't quite finished my submission and don't want to rush it. I'll try to post double points next month in order to buy back the Joker if possible though.

Brilliant idea. I love it. That would be great. There has been so much good stuff it would be great to be able to look back at the edited highlights.

Anything I can do to help?

Thanks. I'm anxious to see what they look like based too. My local store reopened a couple of days back (still some teething problems), so hopefully I'll be able to get the materials ordered in to base this month.

@Harry & Doi: Thanks, have learnt my lesson again about painting flesh first =)

@Doi: Troop wise for the moment it will be. I still have another bolt thrower to do yet as well as Morathi. I will be picking up few more plastic warrior bits to flesh out the spear regiment and maybe throw togetrher two small 10 man units of spears/xbows

Think that would be a great idea. I didn't get to see all the armies from last year (<---Newb to Warseer). So think it'd be great to have some inspiration from those that slogged it all the way.

Cheers and looking forward to it,

Sorry for the late posting; was being kept hostage at a swedish military camp (and for a norwegian with models to paint that can be quite disturbing). Well... this is ofcourse not completly true, but its how i choose to remember the situation. ;)

This month;
4 Chaos Chosen w shield, Musician: 86 pts

Remaining work; the musician and the guy to the left need proper basing, a few details, and some work on the cloaks.

Dunno yet. I'll talk to some friends about it. They're all the way into internet-business. If they can make some simple site for me where I can put stuff, we'll see what to do next. But probably digging up the results from the first tale, and all pics for that and last years tale to go with it would be cool...

I'll be sending some e-mails around.

@rhys60 :
looking good … all very dark and brooding exactly as brettonians should be … although that could just be the dodgy photography. :D

Lol, i think you're right on that one... and so...

Here are some better pics taken with a proper camera :) These pics show up how much is still to do on them though :( (mostly the horses)

http://i657.photobucket.com/albums/uu295/rhys60/DSC02288.jpg

@ rhys60: Nice work. This is turning out to be one of the most earthy Brett armies I’ve seen. Earthy is probably the wrong word, as is dull, maybe muted would work better. Regardless, point is I like how it is turning out.
Thanks, i'm not sure if this is intentional though :P:D
And the comments to the twos:

@Bluesabre
I like the freehand on the banner and your gold is looking great looking forward to see the finished army.

@Krzyek
Well done on the horses, the individual colours and different coloured feet look great.

@D35t0y3r
The time you spent on the skull payed off since it looks good and the checker pattern looks really nice.

@Basilbrush
Grats on getting such a clean white on those.

@Lt Dougheim
This army is turning out looking really good, which is often hard to do with such old models.

Others:

@Alathir
That's an awesome idea with painting em clean and all, i might have to steal that if you dont mind :P Good luck with the 40 Men at Arms next month, i still regret deciding to do 35 the first month :P

@Fluffystuff
Those are fantastic. Are all the models in the army going to have bases like that???

@Doi
Even more good looking ogres, the flames add a nice little touch to the model.

Hi all,

This month I've changed up my list a bit, which to anyone who knows me is no surprise I must change a list I write for a game probably 3 or 4 times at least.

I don't know how this works but if you want to change my total to keep it to the 2k by the end Braad oor whoever does the list here's the change.

Month 2's painting:
The 23 Slayers drop to 16 with no upgrades - 176 points
Character: Dragon Slayer - 125 points

Total: 301

Also still having issues with my camera, I'm going to get my friends one and use that, so I'll have pics of this and last months stuff up in a couple of days.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

Unit: 10 Miners, no upgrades - 110 points
Character: Dwarf Lord - 266 points
BUILD/CONVERSION: All are straight out of the blister. The Dragon Slayer is of course the Garagrim mini from the Storm of Chaos, as an aside I'm still kicking myself I didn't get any Doomseekers when they were out, oh well. The lord was realesed with the Army book when it was last redone, one of my mates calls him mr grumpy, for obvious reasons.

PAINTING: All the skin is the same as last months, nice and simple. As with the armour, gold and weapons, I had a go at gems this month and it looks ok from a distance but not so flash up close, but I'm getting better at it. Although I am very proud of my lord, he's the best effort I've done so far.

BASING: Gritty sand painted black at the moment, still havn't decided how to base them..

HIGHS AND LOWS: Again I love these old models, and the newer Garagrim and lord as well, another high is that my painting is improving which is very satisfying for me, as I've long been primarily a gamer. The only low this month is my continued indesicion about the basing, hopefully I'll sort it next month.

POINTS: 376 Points.

TOTAL POINTS: 677 Points.

DICE-ROLL: 5

Next month: 10 Thunderers and a Runesmith.

So here is the army shot so far, this is the first photo of my painting I've ever posted :D I'll try to add some more soon.

I'm going to have to play a JOKER this month. With the kids birthdays, the start of a new Mordheim campaign at my gaming club and just general real life stuff I've not managed to get any painting done (apart from some Night Goblins Fanatics for my son's birthday cake). I hope to make the joker back next month though as I'm planning on painting a BSB and the unit of Warriors I'd planned to do for this month. Also got my Mordheim Marauder warband to paint too so might be some of them instead of the BSB depending on how the month goes!

I plan on doing a post of comments tomorrow so will go through the great posts so far to do that! :D

@Harry, Doi, Braad- thanks for the words of support. I'm considering it now, especially as I've just picked up a Lizzie army off of ebay (my other option was night gobbos and there's almost no hope of getting them done on a monthly basis!). I'll have to put my new space puppies on hold to do more fantasy stuff :)

I have, however, managed to assemble my unit of Dragon Ogres, which I originally had meant to have done in October. Guess it'll serve as a WIP for November, if nothing else - hope you like them!

Sorry for the wait guys. Camera broke like I said before. But enough talk here's the work for this month.

The Red Green Clan

Army: Dwarfs

Units: 10 Hammerers, 4 Thunderers

Build/ Conversion: Thunderers are strait from the sprue. Hammerers are dwarf warriors with the masks, and holding great weapons with the axe tops replaced with hammers.

Painting: Same as the others.

Basing: Same as others.

Points: 4 Thunderers, sheilds Pts.75
10 Hammerers Pts.120
Total this month 180
Total from last month 411
Grand total 591

@ Inquisitor Pariah: Fancy sneaking back in where I've already commented. You're lucky a photo of a naked woman caught my eye :p. It seems you're still sitting below the post count when the Mod's stop checking your post before it goes up if it contains pictures. Where is the Death Hag miniature from? I don't recognise it.

@ Lt Dougheim: Great work from you again, but what is it with your Halflings and trying to run over farm animals with their steam tanks? :p

@ Giledan: Very nice. How are you differentiating your Chosen from your normal Warriors?

@ perplexiti: Even if you've changed your list for gaming, it doesnt effect your previously painted work, just your future work. So you still get the full points for your Slayers. Unless you dont want it of course :p.

@ noeste: Those are quite possibly the best Dragon Ogre conversions I've seen to date. I've been wondering how to do it with the new DE cold ones (since Ogres dont work as well there as they did the old ones) and it would appear that Black Orcs are the answer. Consider me waiting here anxiously to see them painted next month.

@ Dino: Great stuff. Can't believe I only just noticed the plaid shirt pattern, I've been thinking it was just red and green this whole time .

And now I get to go back to revising for tomorrow's chemistry exam :(.

@ derv: Have to agree with you in regards to the AoW model being a pain in the ass to put together. The sword hand and the belt buckle bit drove me bonkers. How did you paint the gold on the Master on the horse? It looks amazing.

The gold is really simple. Basecoat black, give it a few layers of Shining Gold, highlight the edges with Chainmail then give the whole thing a heavy coat of Devlan Mud.

I've only begun using the method and it looks really good. Shame I hadn't thought of it before painting my Executioners and Cauldron of Blood!

hey everybody, i'm back....!!! now the initial first few crazy months has died down & i thought i'd drop in & comment on people's work. as i'm not in the tale i don't have a dice roll but i'm just going to comment on people that i already 'know' from the previous tales or those that really stick out for me for one reason or another. if i don't comment on your work don't be offended!

@ Harry - awesome war machines, very characterful & typical Harry goodness on the bases too!

@ derv - very nice stuff & good to see you continuing last years army

@ avian - very cool marauders, you seem to have a lot more models to paint this year than last!

@ Doi - very nice looking Ogre's although just because you said you weren't doing snow bases again doesn't mean you can't do anything for the bases!

@ bluesabre - very nice stuff again & good to see another continuation of last years army

@ Dark Apostle - that BSB is quite frankly stunning, excellent highlighting & shading all round & a truly stunning centre piece for an army

@ Discord - he's Chaos so anything is plausible! nice entry too

@ Altahir - very nice looking stuff, although it can be fun to paint Bret's lots of different colours I really like armies with a uniform look

@ fluffystuff - both those stegadons are quite simply phenomenal, absolutely beautiful in every way & looking forward to seeing what else you paint for the army

@ jim - cool looking stuff

@ Warlord Ghazak - excellent character & yet another army continuing from last year (this is fast becoming a theme now!)

@ Emporer Norton - very nice Empire stuff, are you going to use the CMON snow method? That's what I'm using for my marines & it works very well (pester Doi if you want some advice!!)

@ Braad - cool looking shaman, how come no painting for so long?

@ Dino - nice looking stuff again, i have no idea how you manage to paint so much all the time!

phew, right then, time to get back to actually finishing my stuff for TO40KP!

Some comments:

C-Coen: Very striking color scheme, looks nice!

Queekvondrak: The mini as a whole looks good. But I think you should water your colors down a tad more, at least on the weapons it looks a bit thick.

Dark Apostle: This is awesome, seriously pick a positive adjective they all fit. Totally sexy! ^^

fluffystuff: Well another paintjob from the wow!-faction. I’m more than a little jealous.

Jim: Hochland rules! Great work mate, I think the horses look really good, maybe I’ll copy that for my Pistoliers.

EmperorNorton: Pics seem a little suboptimal, but from what I can tell the handgunners are at least solid tabletop standard. The other stuff looks great.
“Blau-Weiß Schalke-Scheiß, Weiß-Blau MSV!” :p

Malorian: The army has a really strong cohesive look, but I think a little variation with the beard colors couldn’t hurt.

Doi: Great looking Ogres; pants, flames and skin.
And here’s the comparison shot you asked for last month:
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll227/gargobot/IMG_1465.jpg
Left is with your recipe (and my lazyness) the right one is the lighter version I used before. Your way is definately faster.
The difference seems quite obvious, but you can hardly make that out at arm's length. Yeah and I know, this isn't a prime example for good painting especially the one with the gray beard...

Harry: Thanks a lot! I'm glad they aren't too murky. I'm hoping that the model in the chariot will make sense as the army progresses; right now he sticks out like a bright pink sore thumb! :D

Doi: Thank you! I'm glad it doesn't look as awkward as I imagined.

Comments for the 5 rollers:

@Doi: Solid Leadbelchers. The clean stripes on his pants are impressive. I like the subtle rust effects on the gut plates and cannons as well.

@Jahorin: Really nice Liche Priest, the grayish hue to his flesh makes him look properly desiccated! The horsemen are looking great as well. The models really shine in the army shot.

@Dr. Mole: I seem to be having a problem viewing your models! The pictures just won't show up for me. I will try to remedy this and post a comment later!

@Desert Rain: That is a pristine, crisp, and intimidating wall of swordsmen. The gems look nice, and the chariot looks great based up.

@Matrim_Cauthon: Cool Dark Elves! The banner is impressive, especially the clean sigils/runes. I like that champion model, and your painting really brings out their sinister character.

@Alathir: More wonderful Brettonians. You have a knack for smooth coloration. The shields and banners really catch my eye.

@Jim: I think the horses look fine, they have a very realistic appearance. Great shading! I'm taking notes on your bases as well, they look very natural.

@Perplexiti: I can't seem to view your pictures, either! I apologize, I will comment once I remedy the situation.

Also:

@QueekVonDrak: Nice warpstone blades. The green/purple contrast is striking.

@ Braad - cool looking shaman, how come no painting for so long?

Thanks!
Well, I guess I just did so much painting last year that I lost the spirit a bit. And I bought a new pc and a cool zombie-shooting game (left 4 dead) to go with it and lost myself a bit in it...

But it's back, and I already finished another of my characters for this month!

09-11-2009, 17:24
@ Malorian: Nice work. I didn’t even notice the darker green until you pointed it out. How many points have you got painted for your Dwarves in total now (TOFP and the rest)?

So far I've posted 1566 points but have over 3000 painted.

Comments!!!

Harry: Warmachines look great but the base for the stone thrower is HUGE!

derv: Both models look good. The BSB might be better off to be armed with something different, but guess that's a little late at this point ;)

Avian: Great as always. The skin tones look nice and smooth.

Doi: Ogres are looking good. Nice straight lines on the red and white pants.

BigJon: Pictures aren't showing up for me at work...

jahorin: Pictures aren't showing up for me at work...

Bluesabre: Executioners are looking good and nice work on that banner. My dwarfs recently got destroyed, twice, thanks to those bloody executioners...

Dr. Mole: Looks evil... I like it!

C-Coen: I like the paint scheme but the black eyes just seem to be another dot. Maybe make them a different color.

Krzyek: Looks nice. Good to know people are still using those models.

Queekvondrak: The green worked out really well.

Dark Apostle: Very very nice. I'd rally behind that banner ;)

Discord: Never seen that model before. Looks good.

Desert Rain: Looks nice. One thing you could do is make the blades more flashy by using a brighter metalic color for the blade edge.

Matrim_Cauthon: Nice and bright. Worthy of guarding a lord!

H2O: Looks like more of the detail could have been painted, but I'm not going to complain if it brought you back into the hobby :)

Ishivia: And the skaven horde gets bigger! Looks good.

D35t0y3r: The checkered pattern could be cleaned up a bit but it still looks good.

Alathir: Very nice and bright. In fact seening how well they turned out I'm thinking of changing my Brets to be blue and white!

Fabius Bile: A tiger horse?!?! (model just right of the chamo) Run for the hills!!!

8BitMUmmies: Chariot looks like it's going to hand out some major hurt!

fluffystuff: Another great looks steg. Wouldn't ming playing against a steg heavy army if they looked like these!

Jim: The engineer models looks very good. The crew member that is holding their ears always makes me laugh when I see it.

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Great looking conversion. What shield is that though?

doc_cthulhu: Rats are coming along well. Keep it up.

smokemeakipper: Now those are some old models! Yellow and purple is a combination I don't think I've ever seen on orcs before so it, along with the models being so old, really make them stand out.

rhys60: Good to see you back in it but I think you should put a bit mroe time into that lord. There is a good amount of detail that could be added (the horsed head stands out the most) and being that it's your lord you'll want it to look as top notch as possible.

LiamTaylor: Looking very nice. The blue really stands out.

BeatTheBeat: Models that paint up quickly are always nice. Maybe go to men in both armies instead of picking one or the other.

EmperorNorton: Looking good. The BSB's face turned out really well.

basilbrush: Etheral units are always a good way to get a lot of points painted quickly.

Inquisitor Pariah: Nice conversion and dark riders and cute Hag. You just need to paint in the eyes and her hotness would stop one from attacking her from fear of removing her from the board ;)

Morglum Necksnapper: Where is that model from? Looks really good although the shaman almost looks... friendly...

Braad: Nice and bright.

arobe: Nice bases. Both units look great.

Lt Dougheim: Why does your stank love to run over animals so much? The army is turning out to be very interesting. Keep it up.

Giledan: Very nice. Have never been a fan of the skull head but the paint job on these guys is perfect.

perplexiti: Pictures aren't showing up for me at work...

Dino: Keep these great looking dwarfs coming. Hope those great weapon conversions don't break often.

Hey Ho - here we are again - another month, and we seem to be getting ever thinner on the ground. Perhaps we can suggest to GW product development that a Joker army would be a good seller, as the Joker faction seems to be growing by the day!

Enough of this tomfoolery - comments for the 3's:

@Derv - Nice work, I particularly like the blood on the mounted lord's blade - subtle, not overdone as some people do.

@Dischord - Once again, great use of old school miniatures, your army overall is very distinctive.

@H2O - Very neat chaos warriors - I do like the muted palette you have used - very appropriate.

@Warlord Ghazak Gazkhull - That's one serious squig - you couldn't load him onto a rock lobba!

@Liam Taylor - Very nice skink priest - great painting overall.

@EmperorNorton - DON'T GIVE UP! - Your stuff looks great. One question - your standard bearer, was that a special edition mini, a Games Day figure or Europe only mail order perhaps? I have never seen that one before.

@Morglum Necksnapper - Love the wyvern - it definitely fits a Savage Orc army!

Fabius Bile: A tiger horse?!?! (model just right of the chamo) Run for the hills!!!

Not quite old chap! That's just a hood type thing - most horses heads have chainmail hoods, but not this one, so I decided it would be fitting to paint it like tiger pelt.

Don't make me come over there!
The point of the small picture size is that the details aren't too visible, of course.

@ Emporer Norton - very nice Empire stuff, are you going to use the CMON snow method? That's what I'm using for my marines & it works very well (pester Doi if you want some advice!!)

Not sure what the CMON snow method is, but I have pestered Doi about it before, I think.
Might do it again, though. Pestering Doi is my favourite part of the hobby.

@EmperorNorton - DON'T GIVE UP! - Your stuff looks great. One question - your standard bearer, was that a special edition mini, a Games Day figure or Europe only mail order perhaps? I have never seen that one before.
IIRC it was a splash release and it's available from mail order only now.
I bought it the day my friendly local game store closed for good, so it makes me a bit sentimental every time I pick it up.

Not quite old chap! That's just a hood type thing - most horses heads have chainmail hoods, but not this one, so I decided it would be fitting to paint it like tiger pelt.

Oh I know it was suppose to be a hood or something, but it just looked so different and cool that I had to comment on it :D

A little late, I know, but I finally managed to finish my contribution this month. So, here goes:

ARMY : Skaven (2000 points)

DICE ROLL : 1

UNIT: 25 clan rats with full command (132,5 pts), 2 rat swarms (50 pts)

BACKGROUND/THEME: Don't have very much background for the army at the moment other than that i am not aligning myself towards any particular of the greater clans. The army will rather be a warlord clan (most likely led by a warlord) with specialist troops from the varying other clans. Expect to see hordes of clanrats, slaves (if I get the time...) and stormvermin during the tale from me.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the box.

PAINTING:
Cream cloth: Bubonic brown worked up with bleached bone and shaded with devlan mud
Metal: Boltgun metal drybrushed over tin bitz, heavily coated with devlan mud.
Fur: Simple scorched brown dry brush over black primer.
Skin: Scorched brown with successive highlights by adding bleached bone 2-3 times.
Grey cloth: Codex grey + chaos black highlighted with codex grey.
Brass/bronze/whatever on ratling gun: Tin bitz dry brushed with dwarf bronze, washed with devlan mud.

BASING:
Scorched brown drybrushed with graveyard earth. Edges picked out with graveyard earth. Stones painted Shadow grey. Finally dead/winter static grass was added in random patches.

STILL TO DO:
The odd highlight here and there and some touch ups. Eyes...

HIGHS AND LOWS:
Definite high this month was finally finishing off this clan rat unit. It has been long going and it felt great putting the last touches to it. Also, painting the lovely old metal champion/chieftan to go as their champion was great.

Biggest low came a few hours ago when I was putting on the shields after painting almost everything, and realised I had 25 clanrats and for some reason only 20 shields painted. Will have to go back and fix that some time. :cries: Also, realising that after GW nerfed the points cost of pretty much everything I painted so far I only have369.5 points completed instead of exactly 400 as I had planned. Bummer!

POINTS : 182,5

TOTAL POINTS : 369,5

Not bad for beeing out of the hobby for a long time. I'm sure your painting will progress if you keep it up! And a very nice writing on the book of the sorcerer.

no chance with me sorry, at least this year anyway. am still struggling to get my TO40KP stuff done on time & doing more than one army stressed me out last year! Still, once my marines are done I think I'll be back over fantasy way next year...

Well next year is better then nothing. Now I'm going to have to try and do both Tales next time as I was going to do my Orks last time but I stayed in the TOFP instead because it was too much fun to leave!

Doi: Great looking Ogres; pants, flames and skin.
And here’s the comparison shot you asked for last month:
Left is with your recipe (and my lazyness) the right one is the lighter version I used before. Your way is definately faster.
The difference seems quite obvious, but you can hardly make that out at arm's length. Yeah and I know, this isn't a prime example for good painting especially the one with the gray beard...

Thanks for that. I actually prefer your old method (looks like it takes more skill :p) but as you said, at arms length you aren't going to notice. And if it is faster you can get more painted!

@Doi: Solid Leadbelchers. The clean stripes on his pants are impressive. I like the subtle rust effects on the gut plates and cannons as well.

So far I've posted 1566 points but have over 3000 painted.

Doi: Ogres are looking good. Nice straight lines on the red and white pants.

Not as well done as you two think. If you look closely you'll notice that one side as stripes half as wide as the other because I wasn't paying enough attention when I painted the outlines :p.

Not sure what the CMON snow method is, but I have pestered Doi about it before, I think.
Might do it again, though. Pestering Doi is my favourite part of the hobby

I'm glad someone finds me useful :p. This (http://www.coolminiornot.com/article/aid/323) is the CMON method. I've modded it slightly in terms of attaching the models to the bases but otherwise I follow the article. I should still have the PMs with my method from when Jonah wanted to know how I did it if you want to know how I do it.

Thanks everyone for the comments. The wyvern I posted is a Grenadier model.

What about the Shaman on top of it? I don't recognise that bit either.

@ ReaperOfSouls: Very nice. I really like the simple shield design too. And enjoy re-painting those 30.5pts you have already painted ;).

Half points? They do that now?

Shield and spear upgrade for clanrats cost 1/2 point these days, meaning clanrats with shield + spear cost the same as clanrats with handweapon and shield last edition.

@Doi: Glad you like the shield design. I was a bit worried that it might come off as sloppy painting by me (which is not too far from the truth ;) ) instead of crude painting of the symbol by the clanrats.

ARMY: WoC (2000 points)

DICE ROLL: 3

UNIT: Sorcerer of Nurgle, lvl2, infernal puppet (170ish). 5 marauders from unit of 19 (45ish)

BUILD/CONVERSION: Marauders are standard, sorcerer is converted from mainly marauder parts, with the goblin puppet thing from BFSP.

Late posting due to basement renovation, but this buys back my August Joker. Yippeee!

Comments on the fine work on the thread to follow in a few days.

ARMY : Empire (1000 Points)

UNIT: 30 Swordsmen with full command

BACKGROUND/THEME: These are editions to a fairly large empire army I've been slowly accumulating and painting for years a couple of years.

This is actually my August project but got sidetracked and not completed until October.

Some additional fluff....trying to create a private army that fits in the empire and does the Emperor's dirty-work.

When Frank had formed the order of convenience he had thought it would be small and thus useful to the Emperor in a small way. He’ld been more than a little surprised as it swelled into a full scale army and beyond through the addition of a few men at a time. All of them looking to serve, but not wanting to throw away their lives to some hopeless ideal or chivalry, or provincial honor, or used to soak up arrows so some captain could play hero with less risk. He’ld formed them into units, trained them hard, and at the Emperor’s suggestion dressed the foot in grays and bronze so no-one would mistake them for anything other than a private army. But the knights, being knights – needed a little more color so they got it.

Most people thought they were Frank’s private army, but his captain’s knew they were at the Emperor’s beck and call. When Karl Franz needed something done with no apparent connection to his court, Frank learned of the need and went to take care of business. They had saved the borderlands of cowards and incompetents from rats and beasts, without loss of face at court. They had convinced dwarf armies that the empire’s borders were actually in the right place without invoking the Emperor’s name. They had rescued village loads of slaves from a dark elf slave caravan when a certain noble had invited the Druichii to depopulate a neighboring baron’s prime farm-land. They had convinced the offending noble to appoint his son to rule while the noble went on a very long trip to Cathay – on a certain slave galley. They had tried twice to rid their Brettonian neighbors of a certain vampire witch, but without success. Frank hoped third time would be the charm.

But Frank was surprised by the latest additions to his force. The first was a volleygun crew from Nordland who insisted on keeping their colors but wanted to be free to shoot things without extra rules from the college of engineers. Frank promised them he’ld find them live targets – or at least undead.

The most recent was the swordsmen from Ostermark - almost the other end of the Empire. They’ld adopted his colors but insisted on keeping together as a unit under their duelist leader Rutmar Volksheld. They were all from a town on the border with Kislev which had proudly fielded a unit of swords for the last 300 years. Their banner named all the families that had fought and died in those years, almost every family from the area was included. When their lord swore to incorporate them into his regulars to control swords and their land they’ld packed families and belonging and come looking for Frank. They served the Emporer but under their terms. Frank wasn’t sure he would take them until he saw them train and the agreed to swear an oath to serve him on the empire’s business.

Frank was going to have to ask the emperor for permission to found a new village for them and their families. That was certainly going to complicate his life.

BUILD/CONVERSION: unconverted, a mix of 6th and 7th edition models

HIGHS AND LOWS: I like some of the details on the 7th ed models but generally. Found it hard to complete these as I'm really shifting to a new color palette. I like the concept behind the banner - to show the names of all the departed heroes from this regiment since it was established - but may rework the execution at a later date.

Hey guys,

First of all, sorry i didnt even post a joker last month. I am still in, but was really busy last month, and technical issues have kept me from posting this month until now.

Army: Empire, Averland

For this month i have been painting:

10 Handgunners 80 points

Great cannon 100 points

BSB with barded warhorse and griffon banner 144 points

This month total: 324 points (trying to make up for last month)

Total so far: 548 (only 52 points down... will catch up by next month)

Highs and lows: The handgunners and great cannon were quick to paint. I think i have improved the colours on them compared to my swordsmen from the first month, by just spending a little more time on them.
The BSB though (Ludwig Schwarzhelm model), was lovely to paint in the beginning, but then all the details start taking their toll... Jeez that model is a b**** to paint. And WHY does it have 20 (yes TWENTY) skulls on it? i tried to make it more simple with the colour scheme, but it is still a confusing mass of detail to look at. If this model wasnt given to me for free as a gift i would never buy it. This one is the reason i stopped painting them for a while as well. I lost all momentum after i finished the horse and after that i got sloppy and it can be seen.

Well on to the pictures:

Sorry about the lousy pictures. Next time i will take them in the daytime.

I'm thinking about see if it is possible to make some kind of small website, with the same names, but also a gallery of armyshots. What about it? Good plan? I can stack each year in there as we go.

ARMY : Dark Elves (2000 points)

UNIT: 20 Repeater Crossbowmenelves

BACKGROUND/THEME:

The Guardmaster threw back a heavy furred cloak as a salty mist sprayed across the deck. Spying her ancestral homeland she embraced the bitter kiss of Ulthuans temperate breeze, a cruel indication of the tropical paradise she had long been denied. The mere thought of the Asur galavanting across usurped plains filled her with an unreserved fury, a grudge that lent her as much strength as the weapons she armed herself with. The eager Druchii rhythmically prepared her Uraithen; the Deathrain, ready to unleash its' deadly barbs upon the rabble of potters and farmers that Finubar sought to shield himself with.

As the helldrake turned about face she raised her hand to the cloudless sky. As one the warrior elite of Naggaroth raised their repeater crossbows in turn, silent but for the tension of their armaments. As the Reapers under the deck were readied to fire a single prayer was uttered and many blasphemous praises were made to the bloody handed god; Khaela Mensha Khaine.
With all the grace of a merciless butcher she lowered her gloved hand, and from the assembled warriors a great torrent of screeching projectiles tore through the mist. As they showered down into the white sand along the beachfront many elves were slaughtered, Druchii and Asur alike, the less favoured of Malekith mingling blood with the hated enemy.

Satisfied, the Guardmaster turned away from her faithful underlings, wiping away joyful tears before preparing the next volley.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the box except i misplaced the bolt magazines one night so the majority are missing them. This will have to be amended at a later date

PAINTING: Undercoat black. Cloth was 1:1 mix of chaos black and adeptus battlegrey follwed by more adeptus battlegrey highlights washed badab black. Metal was boltgun metal washed badab black and drybrushed chainmail. Skin and other bits were dwarf flesh highlighted dheneb stone washed badab black. The only degree of skill came in applying the wash in several thin layers rather than one thick one.

BASING: Gritty sand, painted scroched brown, highlighted with graveyard earth and dry brushed bleached bone. I then added glade grass and GW snow in small tufts/patches

STILL TO DO: Just find the missing pieces and reattach them!

HIGHS AND LOWS: High point would have to be seeing a small warband coming together even at this early stage. Low point would probably be the monotomy of painting 20 of the blighters in 2 days

Empire Nordland Army

Units: 5 Empire Pistoliers (with musician) and 10 Greatswords (Full Command)

Points: 97 + 130 = 227

Army Total Points: 408 + 227 = 635

Models: 15

Build/Conversion: Both straight from the box.

Painting: Well I forgot to take my Iyanden Darksun paint with me on vacation, so I used Vomit Brown for the Yellow on the greatswords. I don't think it shows too much, I 'll just keep on using it for the 'elite' units.

Highs/Lows: A high is I think the new basing technique I tried. Low is the greatswords took a hell of a long time to paint. I am still looking for inspiration on the banner too... not quite sure what to make of that.

Firstly I would like to apologise for not 'jokering' for the months that I have missed for both of my armies (High Elves 100pts & Vampire Counts 200pts)

I only managed to post for the first month.

I would now, very regrettably, like to officially quit as I am just not managing to get anything completed.

Congrats to everyone for the standard and quantity of stuff completed so far. I will continue to follow this with interest..

Sincere apologies.

I'm going to have to joker this month:
http://www.dxpo-playingcards.com/images/joker04-04.jpg
I won't be making up the points this time, so it'll be my first full on joker.

I rolled a 4. ALso will be replying to skaven painters.
Replies:
@BigJon
That banner is brilliant looking. What language is it that you used, or was it just randomised symbols?
Some of the unit looks like it might work better with additional layers between the black undercoat and the lightest colour on that part of the mini. It's only on some part of the minis though, and the overall effect is fine.

@Queekvondrak
So now that the new book is out, any idea of what points changes have been made?
Are you counting magic items to your cost? That'll help a lot for finishing the tale :)
It's hard to comment constructively for you, as I think I have a very different painting style to you. I don't like much of the dark recesses of the model to show completely black all over. Normally I use a couple of layers of the darkest version of the colour and leave very little of the basecoat, if any.
One thing I could suggest is concentrating on some of the skills you are already obviously developing, and if you feel like it then you can change the painting style. One particular skill I can see is that you are able to accurately paint lines along edges of the model. If you look at the top piece of bandage on his spear it is obvious you can do this, so keep doing that on different parts of your models and it will help improve your accuracy and give greater depth to your highlighting.

@Ishivia
The entire army pic looks quite dark and mysterious. The blue on the globadiers seems like it could be a bit bright for the rest of the army. The green looks great though. Great idea using the BBs. Does it not get confusing using green as one of your paint scheme colours when so much of the army has biots of green warpstone in it? The mini conversions are great by the way.

@doc_cthulhu
Wow, where did you get some of those giant rats? I'm looking into getting a few different and varied mutant beasties for a large giant rat unit, as I much prefer them than a lot of the other choices in the new book.
The swapped round shields that you've used for the jezzails really suit. When I get around to my jezzails you might see that I've done something similar.
The red and black work really well in keeping the rats dark and gritty. Some lighter green on the warpstone for the jezzails might bring out the model more, though they still look great.

@ Mr SMAKIBBBB (I hope you know who you are!)
The purple/yellow scheme is lovely. It's always nice to see something different, and the way they stand out would make them great to see at a tourney.
Are those all old Ed Goblins?

@BeatTheBeat
The green shining out from the plague censers look really great. It actually looks like there is some green poisonous fuel burning in there.
The giant rats on the other hand could do with one highlight layer at the very edge of their fur.

@ReaperOfSouls
From looking at your rats I think I'm definitely going to have to paint on any marks I want on shields, as that really looks good.
The rat swarms also look good (and finally are a bit more useful).

WOW. I can't believe that there are so many skaven posters. Were there that many last month?
I wish I had gotten to post this month, but I'll do my best for next month.
I've got a rat ogre that is starting to look more and more like an abomination(albiet a mini one).

Sorry I'm late with my comments, been meaning to get to them but things kept getting in the way!

Page 1:
@Harry: I've commented in your project log but I'll say it again here. I really love these and I think they do a great job of catching the malevolence and humour that is the backbone of the Night Goblins character.

@Derv: Two great minis there. There's some great shading, I like the purples in particular.

@Avian: Commented in your plog on these as well but I do really like them, especially the variety you've managed to create in a big unit. The army shot for the Tale so far is already looking very impressive!

@Doi: Love the Leadbelchers. The rusted metal has come out really well again and I love the flames, they look really well done.

@BigJon: Gold in The Golden Army! Hehe. Good to see that Gamesday Champion getting a use and the old banner bearer too.

@Jahorin: Sure I've commented in your plog too but I really like how weathered you've gotten your Tomb Kings looking. The army as a whole is coming along nicely!

@Bluesabre: I love the Executioners, they're some of my favourite minis. You've done a really good job on them, I really like the blue, gold and silver scheme so far.

@Dr.Mole: I spy a classic mini! Looks good, the red on the cloak looks really nicely shaded!

@C-Coen: Like the Jaguar-style colour scheme on the Lizardmen, fits very nicely with the Aztec theme the army has.

@Krzyek: Ah the Ungols! Do love these old minis. You've done a good job on them too!

@Queekvondrak: Looks like you've done quite good job on the shading for the purple etc. If I was to critique something it would be the eyes, they could do with a little attention as they're empty at the minute. Also, I'd be tempted to paint the horned rat on the emblem around his neck to make it stand out. Looking good otherwise though.

@Dark Apostle: Wow! This looks absolutely great. You've used some awesome bits for this conversion and the painting on it is beautiful! Great background too.

@Discord: The "chariot" looks good, even if it is cheating ;) Are the mini screamers from Warmaster? Like the base on this one, looks good.

@Desert Rain: Nice Swordmasters, it's starting to turn into a nice little High Elf force now!

@Matrim_Cauthon: The Black Guard look brilliant. Some quite stunning painting on these. The shading on the robes and cloaks stands out as looking really great!

@H20: Commented on your Warriors before but seeing them again, I'm still impressed by the warpstone flail wielding one. He looks really great and I love that weapon! :D

@Ishivia: Not the easiest pictures to tell from but the Globadiers you've converted look really well done. Interesting to see some variety for this unit choice!

Page 2:

@D35t0y3r: The two Night Gobbs look good. Sad it might be but I love the mushrooms, great job on those!

@Alathir: The Grail Knights look great, the colours look good and the pristine finish on them makes them seem like the noble heroes of legend they're meant to be.

@Fabius Bile: Interesting background for the Knights and I like how you've made it a part of the minis. Certainly adds something new to some old minis that as you say are overdue a revamp as they really don't compare well to the newer cavalry in other armies.

@8bitmummies: I really love the Gouge-Horn, he has the look of a brutal killer at ease there. Very cool. The painting is good on these guys again, you get a very rugged feel from the way you paint them which is certainly apt! The mini on the chariot is certainly crazed enough!

@Fluffystuff: Another great Stegadon! I'm really curious to see how your Saurus turn out next month as the Stegadons have both been pretty phenomenal but it'll be a very different change of pace and I'm quite excited to see how the unit looks!

@Jim: The postoliers look good, the horses look really well painted and horses are always difficult to pull off so well done. The artillery looks good too and good idea to magnetise it!

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Looks good, would love to see some better pictures of this as they lighting is a little dim...

@doc_cthulhu: The Skaven are looking cool. Just think though, the core choices in the army now have some lovely new models. New minis always make painting less painful!

@Smokemeakipper: The retor O&Gs are coming along nicely. The group shot there could be captioned 'Nostalgia' and that'd be enough said!

@rhys60: Not the easiest pictures to make out from but one thing that stood out to me was the eyes on the lord's horse. You should try and paint these as the mini will look infinitely better for it.EDIT: Just seen your second post with a closeup of the Knights.

@LiamTaylor: Epic catch-up post! Some good painting here and the bases look to have a lot of potential when they're finished off.

@BeatTheBeat: Giant rats are Giant rats,t hey look well painted but it's easier to tell from your Plage Censer Bearers that you're doing a good job on these minis. There's no shame in using the washes, they're brilliant for speeding things along! The joker for your Empire army is jst plain disturbing! Hehe.

Page 3:
@EmperorNorton: The warmachines are looking good. Wouldn't mind seeing pics of some of the crew closer up. But the closeups of the warmachines show you're doing a good job. The handgunners and BSB look good, now get on with those bases! ;)

@Malorian: Lots of Dwarfs! You must be getting these done at quite a pace now! It's taking me an age to get any thing painted at the moment!

@Basilbrush: The bases are looking good there. I think the flock amongst the rocks has come out really well too. Looks very realistic.

@Inquisitor Pariah: The bases question is something of an issue I guess! Can the green not just be the colour of the Dark Elf noble's house who leads the army? That Death Hag is an 'interesting' mini hehe. Looks well painted but it doesn't look as if she has any eyes!

@Morglum Necksnapper: The Shaman on Wyvern looks great. Lovely choice of minis there. I find it a little disturbing though that the Orc looks scarily like somebody I know.... creepy!

@Braad: A painted Orc! :D Looks good, I do like this mini it really does capture the insane tribal feel of the Savage Orcs. What are the plans for the base?

@arobe: You seem to have lots of spare 'img' tags around your images in your post there! Like the colour choice on the Wraiths, they look suitably spooky!

Page 4:
@Lt Dougheim: Love the Halfling Stem tank. Looks great, sad as it is though, my favourite bit has to be the inclusion of the goat!

@Giledan: Love the red your managing to achieve, it's so smooth! Really don't get many minis for your points in a Boys WOC army though!

@perplexiti: Will try to remember to comment on yours once you get pictures up!

@noeste: You already know I'm jealous of your Dragon Ogres now. That's all I'm going to say!

@Dino: The Dwarfs are looking good. Looking forward to seeing your runepriest in particular.

Page 5:
@ReaperOfSouls: I really love the ratswarms, they look like they'd be a nightmare to paint though, is that the case? The army is coming along nicely now. Lots of rat-things!

@RaZeR: Your minis are looking great. Love the Infernal Glove Puppet! I think he has a great shaman-like feel. The skull staff was a really good choice to add to that!

@gsmc: Lots of Swordsmen! Looks like a good unit, like the idea of the standard bearer there, seems fitting for this time of year also...

@TonyFlow: Schwazhelm is a great mini and you look to have done a really great job on him there. That is a lot of skulls to have to paint though! The army shot looks very promising. Everyone is starting to look to have proper forces now!

Page 6:
@StormCrow: The crossbowmen look great and your army is looking really good so far. The dark scheme and the snowy bases contrast really nicely!

@Matrim_Cauthon: The Pistoliers and Greatswords both look very well painted. Your yellows look really good, never an easy colour to work with!

Here's a pic of what I hope to have painted for next month:

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/4377/dsc01149z.jpg

Got a unit of Warriors and my Mordheim warband I'm working on too so hopefully will get enough painted to buy back this month's joker! :D

@Ishivia

Aye they do look a bit out of place, admitted - The reason for the sudden blue colour scheme, is that I felt like doing something new when I took up Skaven again for the new book, after a break of ~a year or more :)

But thanks for the critisism (positive and negative) always nice to hear what's good and what can be improved :)

~Ishivia

Note: I will try to post a more updated (with better light!) picture this month or early next month, including the most recent additions (Stormvermin, Poisoned Wind Mortar, Clanrats, Hell Pit Abomination, Doomwheel and some characters)

First off, thanks to everybody that commented on my work this month! :)

And this month I'll comment on everybody's work, I think the dice rolls have lost their purpose by now! So here goes...

Page 1:

Harry - Awesome gobbos! Really like the squig thrower, wonderful little mini-diorama there!
Derv - Really good, especially the mounted one! Nice colours and lovely basing. Oh, and the shield with rune looks great!
Avian - They're coming together nicely! I was a little bit undecided on what to think of your inverted colour scheme earlier, but that group shot shows how well it all goes together as an army! Sweet. And love the fluff as always!
Doi - Great job on the flames and striped pants! You HAVE to base them soon though, it will really be the icing on the proverbial cake!
BigJon - You've really managed to pull off the gold armour! The banner looks great as well. The hair on the unlucky fellow about to die looks a bit too yellowish though, maybe try to highlight up from a bright brown instead of black to yellow?
Jahorin - I really like the dark and gritty look you've given them! And the army shot looks gorgeous, coming together nicely!
Bluesabre - What can I say! Beautiful, especially the banner. Lovely freehand. Your champion has to watch out though, some guy on the right is about to stab him in the back!
Dr. Mole - Nice, smooth colours! The bird especially looks great.
C-Coen - Love the colour scheme! The kroxigor in particular looks great, can't wait to see the whole unit taking shape.
Krzyek - Great to see some Kislev! I love your use of bright, almost old school colours as well, the cloth on some guys are just amazing.
Queekvondrak - Lovely green! If you keep doing that for all magic weapons and warpstone, this will look great.
Dark Aposte - Beyond words, as expected. What a wonderful, wonderful standard! My favourite part of the model has to be the lion's head though, great job.
Discord - I want to make love to your blue! It's beautiful, on all your models! This one really adds something new to the army though, great job. And it's great as a chariot, you've achieved the "warping" effect you were striving for, I think.
Desert Rain - Nice swordmasters! Nice to see some rank and file (even if it's very elite rank and file...) for your army, it's looking great together!
Matrim_Cauthon - Looks great, but I demand a pic of the whole unit! Really neat painting.
H20 - Really like your use of red and green, and those small conversions really add to the look of the unit. Nice!
Ishivia - Wonderful colours! Really like that colour scheme, unusual for Skaven but very fitting. Great conversions as well, might have to steal the idea for my globadiers...

Page 2:

D35t0y3r - Nice colours and patterns, especially like the weathering on the robes! The shaman needs eyes though!
Alathir - Oh how I love mono-scheme brets. Yours just reinforce that love. Very neat painting as always, and the army shot is just stunning.
Fabius_Bile - Love the army shot! The knights look good, however as you say the models themselves are beginning to show their age.
8BitMummies - The gouge-horn is amazing. Love your dark and gritty look, I might have said it before but whatever you're doing, you're doing it right. The axe head in particular looks wicked.
Fluffystuff - Simply amazing colours and extremely neat painting. Really looking forward to seeing some rank and file!
Jim - I love the engineer model. The pistoliers look great as well, do they rank up? The outrider looks like he might be a bit too relaxed about "fields of fire" concerning the horse to his right!
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - If it's a conversion, it's great! Nice use of red and bone.
Doc_Cthulhu - Those giant rats are... Gigantic! Have to get myself some. Really nice gutter runner unit as well, make me want one myself...
Smokemeakipper - Now those are some bright colours for night gobbos! Looking great though, and really adds some colour to the army as a whole. Looking forward to more!
Rhys60 - Really dark pictures, hard to see much! The lord looks nice though.
LiamTaylor - I think the light messes with the colours on a few pics, but the Terradons really made me go "Woaaah!", which is a good thing! If those colours are representative of how they look IRL, then you've got a really good eye for choosing colours, they contrast extremely well. Great job!

Page 3:

EmperorNorton - Looking great, a little hard to make out the details from the pics though!
Malorian - The darker green looks really nice on the hammerers, kind of marks them out as an elite unit. Makes for variation within the army without using different colours. I say keep the dark green!
Basilbrush - Neat! And I like the basing!
Inquisitor Pariah - Nice conversions on the dark riders! And I wonder what your death hag is doing with that pointy skull? :D
Morglum Necksnapper - Simply wonderful. Best wyvern I seen, ever, I think... Love the white tattoos/body paint as well.
Braad - GOBLIN GREEN BASE! Really nice, bright colours overall, makes me think "old school" which is always good.
Arobe - Now those are some nice wraiths! Great idea to use skulls on the bases, looks like some deathly mist forming around them.

Page 4:

Lt Dougheim - Great steam tank! The crewman is a wonder of old school genius, and the goat is just generally wonderful and adds loads of character.
Giledan - Incrediby neat painting! You have achieved really nice colours.
Dino - All those colours SHOULD just look like an explosion in a paint factory, but you've pulled it off great! Especially the hammerers look really good.

Page 5:

ReaperOfSouls - Despite the old clanrats being, well, the old clanrats, they look quite nice! Great painting, like the rat swarms as well. Looking forward to more!
Razer - Nice conversion! Simple yet effective colour scheme!
Gsmc - I like the banner! They could use a wash of the ever useful devlan mud on their skin though?
TonyFlow - What's up with all the wonderful Empire banners this month? Looks great anyway, the black and yellow is really striking and you've got a really neat painting style.

Page 6:

Stormcrow - Your army keeps standing out as the perfect example of how DE should look in my opinion. Stole your painting method for black for my skaven, works wonders!
Matrim_Cauthon - BLUE AND YELLOW! Looks great, love how you got the colous so bright and striking. We should ally our armies some day...

Woah! That was a s***load! Everybody is doing great though, and it's a joy commenting.

I do really think I'll be stepping down my Empire to boys and step up my Skaven to men though. My empire just take too long to paint, and I'll be even more busy next term. Ah, well... I'll probably end up completing 1500 pts of 'em anyway, I have a 1000 pts tournie coming up in December, so I'll have to keep it up until then anyway.

Cheers.

I'll be of for vacation for a week. I hope to see much more fine work when I get back :)

OK, some comments on the comments:

@ Dark Apostle: I’ve been waiting for you to finish this guy, and you have not disappointed. The banner is stunning and I’m just in awe of the gold griffin rider. Not much else I can say, except I want to see more...

Thank's a lot mate, if you want to follow my progress on a (slightly more) regular basis (not that once a month isn't regular...) you can check my Wissenland log (see my sig)

@ Dark Apostle - that BSB is quite frankly stunning, excellent highlighting & shading all round & a truly stunning centre piece for an army

Thanks for your praise, appreciate it!

Dark Apostle: This is awesome, seriously pick a positive adjective they all fit. Totally sexy! ^^

:)

Dark Apostle: Very very nice. I'd rally behind that banner

Any and all are welcome to join the ranks, we're still short on men :)

@Dark Apostle: Wow! This looks absolutely great. You've used some awesome bits for this conversion and the painting on it is beautiful! Great background too.

Glad you like the background, I think it makes the building of the army much more fun.

Dark Aposte - Beyond words, as expected. What a wonderful, wonderful standard! My favourite part of the model has to be the lion's head though, great job.

I like the lion too - as a white lion features in the wissenland heraldry I thought it fitting for one of the champs to sport the fur of one of the beasts.

Additional comments:

@Lt Dougheim: Splendid army, I love the mounted little fellas, and the stanks are hillarious, not least because of the farm animals littering their bases.

@ReaperOfSouls: I like the champion model! Great looking shields, and the swarms are really nice.

@gsmc: I really like your standard bearer, and the background is pretty nice too.

@TonyFlow: Nice take on the BSB, it's detailed beyond belief, and I'm glad I only had to paint the banner for my version of a BSB (the horse will feature later on)

@Matrim_Cauthon: Really good, I can't say I see much of a diference between the Dark sun/Vomit brown. Take your time finding out what you want to do with the banner - they deserve something extra!

Are the mini screamers from Warmaster?

Yup! Cute, but expensive. (Heh, nearly £1 each for minis the size of fingernails.)

To the 3’s…

Discord: Brilliant idea for the chariot and very well executed! Love the base and the rich colours.

H2O: Good use of green throughout, it stands out nicely. I assume you will be adding a banner and painting up the bases at some point?

Fabius Bile: I really like the tiger patterns, simple yet effective. Some parts of the model could do with a bit of shading. You have a very colourful and nice looking army – good work so far!

Warlord Ghazak Gazhgull: Nice conversions, and a good use of Gobbla!. What did you use for the chain?

LiamTaylor: Looking good, but will look even better when the bases are finished. Do you have some of the big gribblies coming in future months (Carnosaur, Kroxigor?)

EmpororNorton: Lots of bronze this month! Sounds like you’re getting a bit fedup with the Empire. Do you have something a bit different to paint for a change, knights perhaps?

Inquisitor Pariah: Which green ink are you using? I’d either suggest some Testors Dullcote spray to get rid of the shine, or maybe a thin coat of Devlan Mud? You really need to paint some eyes on the Hag (is that a Hasslefree model, or Heresy? Reminds me of one of my old Kaylee models from Hasslefree)

Morglum Necksnapper: Easily the best “3” this month. I absolutely love how the colours flow on the wings. You must give me the recipe – did you use blending or some other method? It’s a really characterful model, and all I would suggest for improvement is by adding a little colour to the Wyverns tongue. Otherwise it’s perfect!

RaZeR: The puppet is just brilliant. I’d be tempted to use him as a musician, running up to the enemy and making scary ghost noises 

Gsmc: That’s some very old skool goblin green bases there! You have quite a hefty sized unit – someone is going to always have the +1 outnumber bonus!!!

StormCrow: Looking good. The half grass, half snow bases work very well. It doesn’t look like those crossbowmen rank up very well though!

Doi
14-11-2009, 08:42
@Doi: Glad you like the shield design. I was a bit worried that it might come off as sloppy painting by me (which is not too far from the truth ) instead of crude painting of the symbol by the clanrats.

It doesn't come off as crude painting at all. Well on the furry rat-things behalf maybe but not yours :p

@Doi
The shamans body is from a GW savage orc shaman on (one) foot. The head is from another manufacturer, I can't recall who.

The head is what threw me, I can see the GW model in it now.

@Doi: Love the Leadbelchers. The rusted metal has come out really well again and I love the flames, they look really well done.

Thanks. I'm looking forward to seeing that conversion of yours painted up, it looks great already. The weapon conversion will be stolen for something in the future!

Doi - Great job on the flames and striped pants! You HAVE to base them soon though, it will really be the icing on the proverbial cake!

There is cake?

You should have your proverbial food stuffs this month if all goes to plan.

Thank's a lot mate, if you want to follow my progress on a (slightly more) regular basis (not that once a month isn't regular...) you can check my Wissenland log (see my sig)

I already pop in there to check on things. But you ridiculously talented painters take so long to get things done I still find myself waiting for more :p. I mean there is only one painted model in your plog that I havent seen in here!

@ RaZeR: Very nice. I really like the puppet conversion.

@ gsmc: Good job, I really like the scripture on the banner. For your pictures, are you using image tags? I'm not sure how it works with Warseer Attachments but if you put Your Link Here it should show up in the actual post (though I think it is still an attachment at the bottom as well if done this way). Alternatively, get yourself a Photobucket account. Upload your photos there instead of Warseer and it shoudl generate IMG tags for you so you just need to copy/paste it into your post. Hope that helps.

@ TonyFlow: Excellent work. Between you and Dark Apostle we've been spoiled with stunning banners this month. I'm guessing pictures hosted on Photobucket work since that is where you're hosting yours?

@ StormCrow: Your force is really starting to shape up nicely. The Crossbowmenelves are really good, look like they'd be a pain to rank up though.

@ Matrim_Cauthon: I really like the new basing scheme, goes well with the blue/yellow clothes. Can't tell the difference between the yellows on my end.

Been tied down with exams lately (last one Wednesday!) so I havent even assembled this month's stuff yet. And a distraction by the name of Warlord Queek took up the little free time I did get (dont play Skaven either, in fact after being smashed by Knighta's army for seven years I dont really like them anymore :p, but I want to paint this guy up).

And for anyone interested, my Goblins from the last TOFP had their third outing the other day. Against my shop owners Vampire Counts. Didnt do too good :(. Wiped off the board while he finished with more models then he started with. Killed a grand total of 12 zombies...

Think I'm going to stick to painting :p

Comments on the fellow painters who rolled 5 and some that have caught my eye:

Harry: Superb idea and brilliantly executed Squig Lobber!

Doi: Well I've probably said it before but those are great skintones. Love the pants too!

jahorin: Army is coming together great. Nice muted colours, with blue as surprising contrast!

Dr.Mole: I find red a very difficult colour to paint, yet you managed it wonderfully. I especially like the bird!

Krzyek: I want too thank you for opening my eyes last month when you commented on my basing. I've changed the technique for my empire army (I don't have the time nor urge to change all my dark elves...), and I think they look much better. I've even tried a scenic base for next month! Now on to you: very nice archers, although the skin looks a little monotone, but that might just be the pictures. Horses have a nice variety to them. Great!

Dark Apostle: Absolutely stunning work! And here I am stuck on my Greatswords banner... Inspirational.

Desert Rain: Nice looking unit with a fitting 'elite' feel to them.

Alathir: Great looking unit. I especially like the criss-cross pattern on the banner!

Fabius Bile: In need of a revamp... looking at this unit I don't think so! Superb! Really nice looking army shot too!

8bitMummies: Beastmen painted as beastmen should be painted. Dark and menacing. As a contrast you might want to highlight the scales on the Tuskgors? Maybe green to fit in with the rest of your army! Only a suggestion though, never mind me ;).

fluffystuff: must keep myself from ordering a stegadon looking at these. Stunning!

Jim: Magnetization was a brilliant idea. I myself made a mortar and cannon out of one artillery set using mainly balsa wood this month. I hope they will look as good as these painted up. Marco is a really nice character too!

EmperorNorton: Empire for the win. Quantity and quality hand in hand. Great painting.

Morglum Necksnapper: That's what I call a centerpiece for an army. Majestic!

Lt Dougheim: Superb looking army, and great colour choice. Mine looks like a carnival compared to yours (not that mind though). You gotta love those halflings!

Giledan: You make me want to start putting together the Warriors army I got for my birthday, but I need to finish these two armies first. Red executed to perfection! Mind sharing your colour recipe? If you haven't already...

Dino: Scottish theme really works. Especially on those dwarfs. Nice idea!

RaZeR: The conversion put a smile on my face. Great idea, and great execution.

TonyFlow: Coming together nicely. Great!

Everybody else: There's some incredible work here... and not too many jokers. I hope everybody keeps going, as I find this whole tale a great source of inspiration and motivation!

@BeatTheBeat: You asked for a unit picture of the black guard I painted this month, so here it is:

http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu133/Matrim__Cauthon/DE-BlackGuardUnit.jpg

Now back to painting my warmachines (two bolt throwers for the Dark Elves and a cannon and mortar for the Empire). Maybe some handgunners too... well it's only the 14th, so still some time left for next month.

So here's what I've done so far this month. In addition, by the end of the month there'll be half a dozen halflings joining him (And hopefully, I'll have time to static grass everything).

Also, here's a better picture of my Marksmen of Miragliano that I did for my first month. Finally finished off Maximillian Damark as well - he just kept sitting on my painting desk getting ignored, poor fella. But he's all done now.

Cheers for the comments people. Been very lazy not commenting as of yet, but here goes.

@Harry: Really lik your "sqock" lobber. Is a nice mini diorama going on there.
@derv: Nice painting on both those. The horse looks nicely done.
@Avain: liking the marauders alot, nice tweeks to make them look a lot nicer.
@Doi: Nice looking flesh tones, and the sharp fire bring a nice bright spotting point.
@BigJon: Nice looking unit, like the bronze armour and the banner is a beast and I really like it.
@Jahorin: A good job well done. Hope you get a book as good as those look someday.
@Bluesabre: Nice unit there dude. Like the basing a lot so think i might do something similar, if thats cool ofcorse.
@Dr.Mole: Good job, and the robes do look nicely high/low lighted.
@C-Ceon: Like the colour scheme, lepord lizards are awesome.
@Krzyek: Like those guys, the horses espicially look nicely done.
@Queekvondrak: Like the warp effect on the weapons, nice1.
@Dark Apostal: Banner is awesome. Need I say more?

@Desert Rain: Nice units. Like the gems, look very bright and clean.
@Matrim Cauthron: Really nice job on those guys, musician is my fave.
@Ishiva: Nice conversions for the PWG. Like the blue for skaven also.
@Destroyer: Cool stuff. The checkers, in particular, look nice and neat.
@Alathir: Nice blues there man, really clean. Although late GL with the 40 MaA.
@Fabis Bile: Like the Tiger skins, gives them a sense past endevors.
@8bitmummies: Like the foe-render a lot. Also the dude in the chariot, sweet model.
@fluffystuff: Really nice Steggie, the beast itself is great and the gold equally.
@Jim: Think the horses are fine, and like the uniform on the crewmen.
@WGG: Good job dude, the squig is nicely done.
@Doc_cthulhu: Cool guys. The old (I think) giant rats are awesome.

@someone2040;4128089]Good to see someone making use of the old wizards - quite a different style to the new plastic ones, but I like it!

@Dino: Awsome steam-powered bolt throwers. Very nice conversions!

@Dakkapantz: Blownapart is sooooo cool! And the halfling unit with the ogre filler is way cool aswell. I just love the sleeping halflings! Painting looks really good too.

Comments for the 3 first pages. More to follow at a later time:

@Harry: Love the squig lobba and doomdiver. Superb conversions and nice painting!
@derv: Good looking elves. Any chance of seeing them together with the models from earlier months?
@Avian: Nice looking marauders. Better hope that noone sneaks missile cavalry in from their right flank though ;)
@Doi: Nice looking ogres as usual. Especially fond of the striped pants and the painting of the flames.
@BigJon: Nice unit champion. Is that a conversion or did he come with the victim? Also nice looking banner bearer.
@jahorin: Nice skeletons. Starting to gather up quite a horde already.
@Bluesabre: Great looking executioners. Love the executioner sculpt, and I think your choice with the muted colours came out great.
@Dr.Mole: Love that mage model! Is it an old GW one? Great painting in any case.
@C-Coen: Lizards are looking good. Guess it is mighty fun painting all those black spots?
@Krzyek: Nice horse archers. I like the way you managed to vary the colouring of the different horses.
@Queekvondrak: Thankqoul is looking great. I like the choice of painting his weapons as warpstone. Since you wanted feedback, I think that possibly the weapon highlights are a bit to strong. I would probably try to add another highlight or two in between the scorpion and darkangels green stages. Or possibly go over the weapon with a glaze of a mid-tone inbetween them.
@Dark Apostle: I have no words for that standard bearer. He is just that great. Possibly my favourite model for thismonth.
@Discord: That chariot is great. Are those mini-screamers from warhamster? Also, the base is looking great.
@Desert Rain: The swordmasters are looking good, and the chariot really improved when getting based.
@Matrim_Cauthon: Nice blackguard. I must admit I was a bit sceptical at first with the dark green bases + bright green flock, but it kinda works out. Many strong colours on these models.
@Ξ H2O Ξ: The chaos models are looking nice. Is that sorcerer converted? In any case, I agree with you that the writing came out great. I think that snowy steppes would look nice also as you say.
@Ishivia: Nice globaidier conversions. A bit too colourful for my tastes, but still looking good. Especially like the rat having a misshap with his globe. Suitably skaven-y.
@D35t0y3r: nice gobbos. Like how you dirtied up the bottom of their cloaks. Also, the checkers on the shamans hat are looking very good I think.
@Alathir: nice knights with a nice banner and nice symbols on the barding. Army is really starting to look like a unified force.
@Fabius Bile: Nice knights. Especially like the cloaks and the freehand on the banner.
@8bitMummies: Nice beastmen. Especially like the rusted metal look.
@fluffystuff: Well, what to say. Another stunning steg. Looking forward to those 20 saurus :P
@Jim: That’s a load of blackpowder hurting you got there. Everything is looking good. I really like the bases.
@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: That is one mean looking squig. Great job!
@doc_cthulhu: I like your painting style for the skaven. Looking suitably grim and gritty. Keep it up.
@smokemeakipper: Great oldschool greenskins. Don’t think I’ve ever seen purple/yellow orks before. Looking good.
@rhys60: Good looking brets. Are those shield symbols painted or transfers?
@LiamTaylor: Great looking lizards, and a horde of them to boot. Keep it up.
@BeatTheBeat: great looking rats. I really think the grey cloth of the plague censers is going too look good with snow bases.
@EmperorNorton: Nice looking artillery pieces. Seems we all have to watch out or the empire players are going to collectively nuke us!
@EmperorNorton again: Really like the looks of that BSB!
@Malorian: You just keep churning out these dwarfs. They are growing at a frightening speed, and looking good as well.
@basilbrush: Good looking etherals. Will look even better when the bases are finished.
@Inquisitor Pariah: That Hag has very nice… skin tone. Yes, that was what I was going to say! Also, the dark riders are looking great.
@Morglum Necksnapper: That is such a lovely model. And nice painting as well!
@Braad: Looking good, even though the base is detracting a bit right now.
@arobe: Nice green colour on those wraith. Also nice ghouls, especially the bases.

I'm sorry for not commenting on anything yet, this month has been a very busy one for me. Maybe I can write some comments tomorrow, but don't be disappointed if that doesn't happen. Hopefully I can finish this months work more or less on time, so a RBT and 10 archers is slowly being painted at the moment.
And thank you all for the comments!

Hi everyone!

Update on the Death Hag - she now has eyes (and lipstick...and eye shadow - maybe I should just put the warhammer away and get a barbie :p )

WIP of next months Shades:

5 old assassin models (4 of the same pose so needed conversions!) plus a hasslefree model with a cloak sculpted on and a weapon swap

@ derv - I'll have to find some of that - been having a hard time finding varnish (does anyone know of good brand of matt spray varnish you can buy in the UK?). It is a Kaylee from hasslefree - might have to make another order...running out of naked women for my army!

@ BeatTheBeat - the Dark Rider conversions were more about making up the numbers of riders from spare parts more than anything else, but I'm glad you liked them :D

@ Elazar The Glorified - Green could definitely just be the colour of the House! Good thinking...I was really getting hung up on the jungle thing

Replies for the 3s

@ derv - really like the mounted model and especially the the metallics!

@ Discord - Nice dirty yellows - where did you get the chariots rider from?

@ Ξ H2O Ξ - stop posting pics of beautiful Chaos warriors - you're making me want to pick up and paint mine ;)

@ Fabius Bile - Those extra long halberds are awesome! Is that a CD you mounted the cannon on?

@ LiamTaylor - That turquios came out realy well - are the cobblestones on the bases greenstuff?

@ EmperorNorton - Like the solid looking artillery ( and avatar!)

@ Morglum Necksnapper - That's an amazing looking model - the blending on the wing is really well done!

@ RaZeR - The infernal puppet is an ingenious conversion (and cute...in a chaos kind of way

@ gsmc - good mix of old and new models - well done on buying the joker back

@ StormCrow - really nice DE - using grey for the robes really paid off [I haven't seen it done before]

and lastly why this months progress has been slow (stupid awesome dinosaurs):

I'm also in the UK, and Testors Dullcote is easy to find! My normal supplier ( http://horsingaround.com/acatalog/Testors_Dullcote.html ) is out of stock though.

Also try here: http://www.barrule.com/workshop/scratch%20builders%20paradise/varnish%20lack%20vernis%20barniz.html. You may also have luck on eBay.

As for naked women, have a look at the Gamezone Dark Pegasus and the Avatars of War sorcerer. Both have a distinct lack of clothing and surprisingly both are already in my army :)

Just can't get into painting at the moment, and I'm still working on the same unit I started for LAST YEAR'S tale, so I don't think there's much prospect of me finishing. Next year though!

@ Malorian - It does have a thin badab black wash...I think the flash must have washed it out (pun intended!). I'm thinking of working some gold into the axe head so I'll hit it with some more ink when its done and put the pics up once I'm finished.

Thanks for the C&C - always welcome!

Thanks to everybody who took the time to comment on my stuff.
So many amazing projects going on here, it's marvelous.

My comments for the 3s:

@derv: The pattern on the inside of the cloak of your master on foot is interesting, how did you do that?

@Discord: Good work on the champion, I especially like the helmet and the staff.

@H2O: Nice Warriors. I like how you worked with dark colours for the most part, but added some brighter elements. My favourite one is the Warrior with flail and shield.

@Fabius Bile: Yet another great contribution to make the Empire proud. How do you make the tiger fur?

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: That’s Gobbla, right? I’m not a fan of the regular giant cave squig model, I like your take on it much better.

@LiamTaylor: Great start on your army. I painted that skink priest for a friend (as coach for his Blood Bowl team) and I found it quite difficult, because of all the bling. And I’m not ashamed to admit that your’s turned out much better.

@Inquisitor Pariah: Hooray for miniature boobies! I think I have a similar model in football gear.

@Morglum Necksnapper: Wow, that’s a cool model, I’ve never seen that one before. I love how you painted the wings.

@RaZer: The hand puppet is a fun idea, I might steal that. For the tattoos, I think giving them a brighter highlight would do the trick.

@gsmc: Congrats on getting your swordsmen done. I dread the moment I have to sit down and paint large units of regular troops. Interesting idea for the banner.

@Storm Crow: Painted in two days? That’s impressive, I couldn’t pull that off.

I'm really looking forward to seeing everybody's efforts for November in less than two weeks, although it worries me greatly how time flies.

Some comments (sorry for beeing late):
@Doi Nice ogres! I especially like the pants :)
@jahorin Good Looking army. The blue really make them fit together
@Desert Rain Clean painted unit! Looks good but for my taste they could really benefit from a bit aof shading. But that is just me :)
@Matrim_Cauthon If you paint the whole army to that standard it will be a top notch one thats for sure.
@Alathir Nice little freehands.
@8bitMummies Wild look! Very fitting for BoC!
@Jim Good painting and color theme mixed together makes an impressive army
@perplexiti Orange beard = good dwarf! Don’t get me wrong, they allready do look great but with the right way of basing they will look awesome!
@Matrim_Cauthon From my experience yellow is a extrem difficult color to paint. Yours looks extremly good! Congratulation for a very good paint job.
@ Dakkapantz Elvis and Napoleon are the coolest models this month!
@ Nefelenwen Top notch! I am really looking forward what you do to a big unit.

Thanks for the nice words everyone. Few replies:
@Doi I added the snow with the models attached but i don’t think that is what i am doing wrong. I just have to find the right mix…
@Dark Apostle No unfortunatly I don’t own an old chariot. In fact I never even seen one. But I have a lot of old wardancers and warriors which I really like. If I manage to stay in the tale I will paint a few of them…
@Matrim_Cauthon I have an army of Blood Angels so I am used to paint red. As mentioned above yellow is the color that is the hardest to paint for me and you seems to do very well with it :)
@ ReaperOfSouls Yeah it is a very old one from GW.

@Fabius Bile: Yet another great contribution to make the Empire proud. How do you make the tiger fur?

I used a lot of pictures of tiger pelts as reference. The colours on a live tiger are very bright and striking, but the colours on a tiger pelt are quite muted. I basecoated the pelts with Bubonic Brown, then drybrushed Dheneb Stone heavily over the top, for a muted off-white colour. The orange parts were 1 part Macharius Orange to 1 part Dheneb Stone, with a tiny spot of Khemri Brown. When that was dry, I added a spot more Dheneb Stone and a spot of Bubonic Brown to the orange mix, then lightly drybrushed it over the orange parts of the pelt. After that, I carefully copied the stripes onto the pelts in Chaos Black, while referring to the pictures I had found.

@ someone2040: Looking good. Can't wait for the halflings.

@ Dino: Putting us to shame by your pace once again! Great work again, but I'll save comments for their proper submission.

@ Dakkapantz: Great stuff. Napoleon looks fantastic, where is the model from?

@ Nefelenwen: Excellent work again. The gold and the green are fantastic. Are we going to see any troops soon?

@ Inquisitor Pariah: Looking forward to those shades. Is the female from Hasslefree?

Well my exams finished on Wednesday (hooray :)) so I'm now on holidays for three and a half months (bigger hooray :D) so I can finally settle into doing warhammer regularly again (though cramming it in at the end of the month to the neglect of uni work every month is regular ).

And a lot of you will be happy to know that my basing materials have arrived so everything will be based this month! However, I have a wee bit of a decision problem that I need some help with. I have the soil and grass sorted but I cannot decide on what colour flowers to do. But my camera just died so I'll have to get pictures up this afternoon for some advice.

Ok, got my camera sorted out so now I can get some advice from the masses.

I've got the ground cover sorted out for their bases (Picture 1) but I'm stuck on which colour flowers to go with it (options in Picture 2). I'm pretty set on using two colours of flowers as it gives some variety without too much colour.

The ground cover (cut up to fit the bases of course):
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x4/WaaaghDoi/TOFP235.jpg

The flowers (again, will be cut up)
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x4/WaaaghDoi/TOFP236.jpg

So what do you guys think? I think the purple is probably too dark (it blends in with the brown too much, but the camera died again before I could get a photo of the flowers laid on the ground cover. It even kept dying while trying to get a photo of the flowers alone, and when it loads it loads with flash on, and I got a chance for one quick picture before it died, so the colours looks a little bit brighter then they actually are) and that the red might be a bit too stark.

That leaves the white and magenta ones, but I think the magenta ones are too pink. Hence my dilemma.

I'm even considering picking up some yellow and orange ones to see what they are like as I think yellow/orange and white would probably suit best colour wise.

But if I order in new colours I'll possibly be pushing it to get bases finished this month :p. My local store is back up and running but these have to be ordered in from Germany.

Any ideas?

I would say the purple and the red actually... Red being a strong colour and purple compensating that a bit... Sweet basing plans though!

Well im sorry to say our stolen camera has not magically re-appeared and we havent been able to afford another one yet so i must officially joker this month. My work was completed but i have no way to prove it so oh well. Im probably going to be jokering December as well but after that i should have a camera and be able to prove that ive kept up. Now onto comments, sadly i couldnt force myself to comment past page 3 since i did these all at the same time:

@Harry-Love the Squig Lobber, ive considered doing this many times and could only hope i would pull it off as well. I love the doomdiver too, the facial expressions on the old goblins are great.

@derv-Lovely color scheme and nice models. The Lord on foots shield is very nice. The paint (overall) seems a little chalky though?

@Avian-Nice simple marauders, the blue shield really give them a strong tie to the rest of the army. The conversion give enough different looks to keep the unit visually interesting, well done.

@Doi-Good looking ogres, i like the fleshtone although the pictures make it seem like it could use 1 more highlight. The striped pants look great as do the cannons, good job.

@BigJOn-Black and gold has always been an effective look especially on Chaos Warriors with all the armor. The unit champion is awesome. The paint style is too uneven/dirty for my taste but it works for chaos.

@jahorin-The bone seems a little dark for skeletons in the desert but its effective on an army wide scale. The priest's headdress is sharp.

@Bluesabre-good looking unit, banner is simple but appropriate.

@Dr. Mole-Great old model, nice paintjob. The bird looks sharp for such a small model.

@C-Coen-I dont think ive ever seen that scheme on lizardmen, it looks sharp!

@Krzyek-Nice effective paintjob, i like the variety in the horses.

@Queekvondrak-Hard to see very well but from what i can the skin and weapons look good. The robe is a bit dark for me and the highlights seem to go to pink but if everything is painted that way im sure it looks good as a whole.

@Dark Apostle-ridiculously cool looking. The lion looks great, the banner is great, overall highlighting/shading is great. My only qualm is the pink handle, it attracts the eye when there are so many better things to look at.

@Desert Rain-Solid paintjob and scheme though the metals look like they could use a highlight. The chariot looks great, more highlights on the horse skin would really step it up though, especially on the haunches where theres so much undecorated skin.

@Discord-I really like the use of old models and warmaster models, they come together well. The blue is very vibrant. My concern is the white looks unfinished.

@Matrim_Cauthon-Great scheme and paintjob, the shading is pretty heavy but its very effective at a distance further than close up.

@H2O-Simple but effective paintjob. I like the wizard conversion. I would change your basing though, with the black/brown thing you have going on it blends into your base, you want your bases to make them stand out.

@Ishivia-Hard to tell with the small picture sizes but i like the bright color scheme on the skaven, its definitely something different.

@D35t0y3r-Nice goblins, i love the shamans hat and the faded checks. For the glowing eye effect try leaving the eyes white then doing the wash/ink, it gives a much more vibrant effect.

@Alathir-Very good looking bretonnians, ive always preferred the unified color scheme, at least within a unit. Blue and white was a good choice.

@Fabius Bile-I love the capes, pretty realistic looking pattern! The banner is cool as well.

@8bitMummies-Very muted but cool paintjobs, i love the chariot.

@fluffystuff-Excellent as always. Everything has a good amount of contrast, the inverse horns were an interesting choice. The skinks are simple but pop and the base is very appropriate.

@Jim-The pistoliers look good, i like that half red/green sleeves. The white feathers look surprisingly good. The artillery looks good as well, magnetizing it was a good idea.

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull-He looks good, could use a little more contrast to really make him stand out though. Did you use real chain?

@doc_cthulu-Washing is a great way to get through hordes and the Nightrunners look great! The jezzails are a little dark but still solid.

@smokemeakipper-those are very retro orcs! I like the yellow/purple combo on them.

@rhys60-The castle heradly is great. The knight/horse head look messy though, a little clean up would go a long way.

@LiamTaylor-Pretty standard color scheme but theres a reason GW chose it, it looks good! I really like the color combo on the terradons.

@BeatTheBeat-The PCB's are good looking but flat. The rats look good, curious to see what your basing looks like.

@EmperorNorton-Nice solid paintjobs on the artillery, the handgunners could do with better pics but they seem to look nice, took me a minute to notice the turqouise sleeves. The banner looks good as well though the blue looks like it could use a little more highlighting. Dont give up, youve painted some pretty nice stuff!

@Malorian-Your dwarves look good, i like the shade of green youve chosen. The beards on the hammerers are just a dirty mess though, taking some time to bring those back up would really help as a whole IMO.

@basilbrush-Theyre effective as spirits but theres just so much white i think they would benefit from a deeper shadow color.

@Inquisitor Pariah-I like your dark elves themselves, the green as a main color i dont see often. The horses look like they were painted as an afterthought though.

@Morglum Necksnapper-A bizarre model overall but well painted. I really like the base. The source lighting was well done.

@Braad-The shaman looks good but a bit flat. The head at his belt looks particularly healthy. His totem looks awesome!

@arobe-The ghouls look very nice and the wraiths as well. The skull bases make them menacing.

I did them the same as the other models... just light brown with a wash...

I could add highlights though, which would also make them stand out as an elite unit and not just warriors with great weapons.

Thanks for the comment.

I think its just the fact the hammerer's beards have more detail that makes them look messier. Heck i know ive just been painting my rank and file very basically with the intention of going back and touching them up so i cant really fault anyone else for it. I really do think bringing up the beards and highlighting them would make them stand out though as they should being the kings bodyguard.

Dwarfs

UNIT: 10 Dwarf warriors, with full command and shields

BUILD/CONVERSION: The champion is a cannon crewman with a replaced hand.

PAINTING: My wife has been complaining for years that I only use dull, dark and "boring" colours. So this time I promised her I would use brighter colours. It turned out better than I expected. Only 15 more to go!

STILL TO DO: An extra brushstroke on the bases.

POINTS: 115

POINTS TOTAL: 225

Comments for 2 rollers.

@ Blusabre - great unit, I'm not sure only about the banner. It looks too simple.

@ D35t0y3r - very good painting. I would only highlight the red moon on the banner.

@ rhys60 - you need to water your paint a bit. Also try to make highlights and shades

@ Lt Dougheim - Lovely usage of the old stank. Qute dog.

@ Dino - the look good. I also know how iritating is to vary clones or models that look very similar.

Respnse:

@ Matrim_Cauthon - glad that you have used my advice. Your troops look much better now. Just paint something on the banner.

@Braad-The shaman looks good but a bit flat. The head at his belt looks particularly healthy. His totem looks awesome!

Yes I know, problem is I don't wan't to change the model's look halfway through the army too much. And that second halfway is only like 5.5 years into the future :p So I got to bide my time until can really start painting. Also, it already takes up a lot of time now.
The head is freshly chopped ofcourse (lame excuse, I know...)

Well everything looks really good guys I will leave comments on everything tommorow seeing as most of everyone's painting is done. However, I have a bit of bad news, and I would like to drop down to the boys division seeing that with the horde type army I am running and the fact that I want all of my models to have some personal touches, I am having some trouble even modeling 200 pts a month. Hopefully this will prevent my from dropping out all together and it will get my confidence up so that I can shoot for 200pts a month next time around.

Having already played both jokers. I'm sorry to say that I have to pull out of the tale. My 5 year old son ruined my camera by giving it a drink of coffee, and I will not be able to buy a new camera until the next year. I would just like to say there are alot of great armies in the pages of this tale and i'll be keeping an eye on the tale until it ends. Keep on painting.

If you're halfway painting big stuff, it's also fine to post a 'wip' shot and claim half of the points already.
Use the standard posting lay-out for an entry so its clear to us.
But using a joker this month is also fine. Only note that if you're up to your third joker, then you'll be mentionened in a seperate group (taggin' along).

Hi ! I failed to finish my lizardmen this month so I will have to loan a joker or something - that's three jokers in a row, that's just wrong :P But hopefully I will come with 200 points of lizardmen in december, so I will buy it back.

I would like to drop the chaos dwarves as I simply won't make it.

My dice roll is 5, I will comment later !

Come on people... last night I painted 5 warriors and a thane... that's 110 points with no gear or up to 189 with gear...

I'm fairly sure that everyone can find at least a couple hours over a MONTH to paint a character or two and avoid playing a joker...

I've got two exams in the middle of December and two in the middle of January, so I'm pretty busy at the moment. I will most likely have to joker this month and then have 2 months to paint the next 200 points and possibly a bit more.

Either one of two things:

1. You need to steamline your process
2. You are a better painter and pick out more details

In the end, for this tale the goal is to get a fully painted 2K army in 12 months, not to win golden deamons.

I paint to the best of my ability and it's still WAY behind some of the painters in this tale but at least you won't see me playing a joker :D

Not too sure it's No. 2. I've just had a look at your stuff, and it seems you make use of washes more than i do certainly. I'm guessing that it's perhaps the build/convert time along with being a slow painter. Although I generally paint with about 4 layers not including a wash layer, and I can see you have 2/3?

Nice dwarves by the way :)

-prime
-base it all green
-black
-flesh
-boltgun metal
-light brown for beard
-dark brown for bags
-mithril silver for highlights
-gold for runes and highlights
-eyes
-wash

I'm done for this month! Again with a couple of days ahead of time. One last week-end of painting for those who want to make it for their November painting. Don't give up! As Malorian wrote, take a hero and paint him, it's an easy wait to do a month.

I can't wait to see everyone progress next week.

1. You need to streamline your process

Kiddin', I hope? :p
Total time spent on building and painting my first warboss on wyvern was about 40 hours. And I got two planned for this tale... I hope these are not the '2 characters' you were referring to earlier? Otherwise I should not only streamline my painting process, I would need to make it aerodynamically so sound that I would have instant lift off... :o

Anyway, I nearly got Archaon (a present for someone) painted up, and after that I should have enough time this weekend to finish a second big boss and have my entry done for coming month.

Oh, I'm far from giving up ;). I was tied down with exams until the 18th and then I couldn't do all of the GS work on the Butcher in one day as extensive conversions have to be done in stages, so it got converted over the week.

Some painting today and tomorrow (if I feel like doing anything after my concert tonight :p) and it should be done. Wont be hard getting a single model done.

Well now that the month is almost over I am leaving comments. If you still have to post something or I skipped you I appologize just let me no and I'll leave comments at the end of the month.

Harry- I really like the warmachines, especially the squig lobba these are rather unique. I fee left out though was my painting really that bad that you won't comment on it. :p

Derv- I think it looks astound whats you purple recipe that waht I was looking for only a little lighter.

Avaia- I really like the marader unit especially the drinking line. However, they look a bit clean for my taste.

Doi- I like the ogres especailly the one with the striped pants. the green one's look a bit flat though.

Big Jon- I really like the champion definatey stands out in the unit. I also like the BSB.

Jahorin- The stkeletons look old and gritty like they should not like the polished bone most people use.

Blue Sabre- I like the look of your army as a whole. Everyone of your guys has pointy curved blades and seems rather detailed.

Dr.Mole- I've never seen that model before it ooks really cool, and I like how your layered the cloak.

C-Coen- I like how the lizzies look. They look really good and are different then the traditional blue lizzards.

Krzyek- I'm not good on fluff but are the models supposed to be Russian based? The painting looks nice but they remind me of Arabian nights for some reason i think its just me.

Dark Apostle- That BSB is amazing and ook alot better than the GW one IMHO.

Discord- I like the base on him as wel as the scocerer. I have two questions for you: 1) Where did you get the mini screamers. 2) Are you going to paint the staff because the white looks kinda bland.

Desert Rain- I liked how they turned out and the gems look especially nice. The chariot looks nice as well.

matrim_Cauthan- I really, really like your paint scheme. The ony thing is that the wood grain ooks a little cheasy and to me I honestly think that basing material is bringing down the quality of painting you have.

H2O - I like how the sorcerer came out especially the free hand on the book. The only thing I don't like is the helmet which other than his staff and book makes him look like a knight.

D35TR0Y3R- I like the goblins and how goood the checks came out. Are you going to make the eyes brighter so it makes it seem like its the source of the illumination.

Alathir- The knights are really great I especially like the cross pattern on the banner.

Fabius Bile- I like the freee hand on the banner and the tiger stripes.

8BitMummies- Everything looks really gritty which i think is how beasts should look. I would do another drybrush on the Wargor's leg to make the fur stand out more.

Fluffstuff- That steggy just like the last one is simply amazing.

Jim- Those pistoliers look really nice I like the rocket and the master engineer as well.

Warlock Ghazak Gzhkull- YEAH SQUIGGIES. I don't know why but the scales on his back keep catching my eye. However, I would use a different spear then one of the clanrat spears(atleast thats what it looks like anyway).

Doc Cthulu-Holy Jebus Batman I love those giant rats what edition are they from (goes on Ebay and tries to find some). The liked how you did the cloaks on the gutter runners and the pavises on your jezzails are unique too.

Smakemeakipper- I really like those old orc and gobos you've got there they look mischeivious. I like the skin tone.

Rhys60- the knights look and and evil it could just be the lighting but I like it. After seeing them in the light the look good.

LiamTaylor- the skin/ scales on the skink preist and Sarus hero (srry having a brain fart on what its called) is stunning.

BeattheBeat- YEAY more skaven really like your PCBs.

EmperorNorton- ohhh shiny weapons. i like how the bsb came out its really striking.

Malorian- as you said the green is a bit dark but it ooks fine against the metal.

Basilbrush- are you going to give a wash or a glaze to the spirit hosts? it would give more depth to the cloak. Are the bashees acting as wraith and visa versa.

Inquisitor Pariah- i like the hag and the riders though i would fix the pink noses of your horses.

Morglum - i like that model and how the color fades and changes on the wings of the wyvern.

Braad- I like the shamans warpaint and the snake around his neck it contrasts alot against such a green model.

Arobe- i mush know how you did your wraiths i really like how they turned out as wel as the ghoul skins. On a side note i like how you ended up with 666 pts exactly.

Lt. Dougheim - I think you painted the tank really well although i am a bit disappointed that there is not a halfling engineer.

Giledan- the models look nice (evil)? the red looks a bit flat but the models are very cohesive.

Perplexiti- the army as a look really cool that an awful lot of orange

Dino- your dwarves look really cool. they remind me of a midget version of Al Borland from Home Improvement with a big hammer and blue flannel. Do those war machines have det cord?

ReaperofSouls- as I said in your plog I like your skaven and the cream is excellent contrast.

RaZeR- i like the wizard he looks shamanic or like a medicine man

gsmc-i like the unit especially the banner its a great idea

Tony Flow- the BSB looks great can I ask for your yellow recipe?

Storm Crow- there a wall of angry elven steel that coming towards me I wanna run

DakkaPantz- i really like the halflings. Is that an actual painting of Napoleon lol?

Nefelwen- that preist looks awesome like a mummified corpse without the wrapping.

Satlpepper- your dwarves have a lot of character to them and your painting really reflects that.

Dwarfhold13- I like the skinks and the slayers. However, the state troopers look a bit grainy maybe its just I'm tired but I'm unsure.

derv

Derv- I think it looks astound whats you purple recipe that waht I was looking for only a little lighter.

I think i can just manage to get a post in before the month ends. I finally found a way through the chinese censorship, so i can see all pictures.

There are so many great armies, but i will only comment on some of them… There is simply too much ☺
@Harry: That is a really nice squiglobber! Diorama and playable model in one.
@Dart Apostle: That is not only a really great conversion, but also a superb paintjob. If i could do it again i would certainly also split up schwarzhelm. It would make him a lot less complicated. I think the model loses itself in all the details, but your version really takes care of that!
@Matrim_Cauthon: Those are some really wonderful dark elves! And i love your empire stuff as well! Can i have the recipe for your yellow? Looks really good.
@Fluffystuff: Wow! Thats what i call a neat paintjob. Love it. The modelcount is a bit low though :D.¨
@Malorian: Nice dwarfs. I rather like the green colour. Although i think you should clean up the hammers, where the black wash seems to have pooled up. Other than that they look really good.
@Dino: Love the colours. The chequered clothes fits really well!
@ReaperoofSouls: Nice old clanrats. Really coming together as an army!
@Dakkapantz: Absolutely love the Elvis Hafling.
@Saltpappa: Nice old dwarfs, my favorites as well… They look really great, and i also have to say that the eyes are amazing!
@Queekvondrak: Thanks for the comment. My yellow is based on sunburst yellow, washed with gryphonne sepia and layered up again to sunburst with some white in it. A bit random actually…
Thats all i really have time for right now, sorry to all the ones i didnt comment on. Good luck on the painting!

@ bert n earnie - i was going through the tale just to look at some of the minis again and i forgot to enter your question. yes with skaven i am deffinately counting magic items not only will this a speed things up by the end of the year i will have my army complete or just about. I am also using the current point costs so i jokered the first to months. saying this makes me seem less lazy. Thanks for your advice about the lining i really apreciate that i like the shadows to show more than usual because i like this more so on my evil armies it gives them a deceptive feel to them (maybe this is just me idk). Granted this won't be winning me any painting award but anything that makes it seem like it looks better i'd love for your advice.

Well I'm done with my painting for November. Finished off Lumpin Croop and his gang of 5 Sunday evening. Now It's the hard work of having to convert and paint at the same time. Perhaps Asarnil will make a come back if I take some time off during Christmas (Although, he's going to have to make a comback sooner or later. I need him complete for March!).

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

3x Ogre Ironguts (Champion, Bellower) - 174pts
8x Gnoblar Trappers - 48pts

BUILD/CONVERSION: All models are pretty much right from the blister/sprue.

PAINTING: The Ironguts follow the same technique as used before on Bulls and Tyrant (pretty much basecoat, wash, touch up skin). The Gnoblars follow a similar technique, just with different colors.

BASING: Sand and plaster bits with basecoat of German Grey, wash of Devlan Mud, drybrush London Grey, Stonewall Grey and a few other colors.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I still find painting the Ogres an enjoyable experience and the Gnoblars were a little more difficult because of their chaotic coloring.

POINTS: 222 Points.

TOTAL POINTS: 819 Points.

Since you already painted stuff for your Dark Evles, I would say you'd add an army, and call the Dark Elves out. Just to keep them on the record. Painted stuff = painted stuff after all.

I'm fine with either, but I like this one better :)

@Matrim_Cauthon: Those are some really wonderful dark elves! And i love your empire stuff as well! Can i have the recipe for your yellow? Looks really good.

Thanks! The yellow is really simple. Skull White primer, Iyanden Darksun basecoat, highlights of Golden Yellow followed by a Gryphonne Sepia wash. Really fast way to paint a vibrant yellow.
