Just got spacehulk a couple of days ago, and I've spent the last day or so painting my first genestealer and marine.

Before I go any further and paint the rest of the collection, does anyone have any criticisms or pointers on how to improve my work so far?

Great start!
It looks like all the Terminator needs is some text on his scrolls, lil squiggly lines will do. Then his base. He looks great, the blue gem stones are a nice tone, good highlight.
The Genestealer looks a little to me, but it may be the lighting.
If this is your beginning the rest will look fantastic.
Keep it up man!

These look great!, both of my comments are very minor.

The Marine is a tad too orange for my taste - of course that's personal preference and also might just be an artifact of the photo / screen / etc.

I think the Genestealers eyes could use a little bit of color. They don't need to be over-the-top glowing red or anything, but I think something subtle would give it more life.

That's it - I love the classic Genestealer color scheme, I'm definitely going with that when I get around to painting mine (which won't be this nice.)

Hi, great work.

All I would add is that the silver seems very bright on the mask, and not in line with the deeper tone used on the gold, so maybe a wash here could help?

Also, the terminator base needs colouring something other than red in my opinion but maybe you intended to do thjat anyway.

Keep it up.

Cheers for the pointers. I'll be implementing a lot of them when I start painting the rest of them.

But as far as the 'too orange' comment goes, that's all down to the lighting. The only orange that I used was a fine line highlight of blazing orange at the very edges of some pieces of armour. Most of his armour is painted with blood red fading to blood red/chaos black in the recesses.

And yes, I do intend to paint his base. But more on that when I decide how I'm going to do it.

In other news, I got started on my 3D space hulk board today...

It looks a little plain right now, but I intend to implement some gimmicks to make this a truly amazing game board. It's probably going to take me a couple of years to complete, but when it's done, you're all going to be jealous.

Back in the day, there was a clour called Blood Angels Orange ;) That the colour they are supposed to be. I'm not a fan of the Blood Angels that are just solid red. They look rather uninteresting to look at IMO. I much prefer the way the space hulk models are painted these days as they are more colourful and interesting to the eye.

It was Blood Angels Red on my pot - which I still have. I believe there was also a spray can version of it. Blazing Orange and Blood Red mixed in 2 parts BO to 1 part BR is about the same though, just a touch less neony.

I'm pretty sure I remember Blood Angels Orange too, from the old days. Either way, Blood Angels were painted in a brighter red than they are now, with more black and yellow trim and other parts.

I still have some painted just like the metal tactical squad with the sergeant with the oversized head...

All I do now is drop the trim but keep them orange. Works well for me and makes it easier to spot sergeants and veterans.

they definatly are coming out a far deeper red than before hopefully the new codex they will be far deeper like the eavy metal paintings for this edition
