View Full Version : The Battle for Neville Secundus - A tale of 5 or 6 gamers

Hey all, after years and years (and years) of playing Warhammer and 40k and most of it's spin offs, I have only once ever fielded a fully painted and based army. My first Eldar army...with it's messy white/blue/yellow/black/red/silver colour scheme still brings back fond memories.

I've been playing with the same group of friends since we all got into this hobby over ten years ago, and they themselves are guilty of this crime! So, after a 6 player aplocolypse game the other night (which I lost) I got to thinking we should start a log and get our current armies painted. So without further ado, I bring you "The Battle for Neville Secundus - A tale of 5 or 6 gamers".

Erm...what follows is a bit of background I wrote to help keep us motivated. Over the course of the log we hope to fill in some of the background and history of this mighty battle, with tales of a unit's exploits throughout the course of the war to accompany actual photos of our painted minis! Please excuse some of the names etc...I drew inspiration from all sorts of places...from my fellow gamers names, to the streets we live on lol.

Throughout the last century, the ash wastes of Neville Secundus have bared witness to one of the bloodiest conflicts in the Ultima Segmentum's history. A once bountiful forest world, Neville Secundus was first discovered by the Adeptus Mechanicus explorator vessel "Divine Reach" some time during the 32nd Millenium. The tech priests on board detected vast underground reservoirs of promethium and the planet was earmarked for imperial colonisation. 9000 years later, Neville Secundus is a barren and lifeless world save for the fifty billion imperial souls who toil in the Mining Colonies and Hive cities on it's surface. The holy promethium extracted from underneath the planets crust is processed and exported to the war efforts in the surrounding systems, supplying His Holy armies across the segmentum.

In M41.205 an Imperial listening station orbiting the outer planet "Walthall" detected several xenos ships entering the system and the cruiser "Furious" and her three escorts were dispatched to investigate. When the battle group arrived at the outer reaches of the system they were immediately attacked by the alien vessels. The battle was a disaster for the imperials, both escorts being promptly destroyed and the "Furious" crippled and left drifting in the void. However the sacrifice was not in vain and the astropaths onboard the cruiser were able to send a single communication back to Neville Secundus. The Tau were invading.

Such was the importance of the world, that when word reached the segmentum high command of an impending Tau invasion, seven Regiments of the Imperial Guard were mustered and dispatched with all haste to defend the system from the xenos. The Tau coalition had landed in the southern hemisphere, laying siege to the Hive Cities "Crewe" and "Stans Hope" and capturing the Mining Colonies in the region. The Neville Secundus PDF quickly mobilised against the Tau invaders, however the imperial counter assault soon turned into a retreat in the face of such fierce aggression and three more of the world's Hive Cities were surrendered to the Tau. When the Imperial reinforcements arrived at the planet fourteen weeks later, they found Neville Secundus a blazing battleground with the remaining PDF forces dug in and fighting for their lives against a technologically and numerically superior foe.

The Tau now held over half of the planet and most of the vital mining complexes were either in ruins or in Tau hands. Imperial High Command had deployed the Imperial reinforcements across the remaining Hive Cities and Mining complexes in the northern hemisphere. The Neville Secundus PDF were tasked with holding the hive city "Red Ish" at all costs. Having suffered horrendous losses during the early stages of the invasion, the remaining companies of the Neville Secundus PDF, lead by Commander Swires set about their mission with a grim determination and eagerly awaited the next Tau offensive for a chance to avenge their comrades.

Both forces now faced a long and bloody war for control of the planet. Over the next couple of months the battle swayed in both directions. During the battle for The "Fred Perry" Space port, a regiment of abhuman Ogryns led by the grizzled Captain Murphy were massacred during a night raid by two hundred Tau Crisis suits. The port was subsequently lost, and vital supplies destined for the few remaining Imperial hive cities were lost. Three times did the Hunter Cadres of the Tau attempt to wrestle control of "Red Ish", and three times did Commander Swires lead his men in a counter attack to defend the city.

Things looked bleak for the embattled Imperial defenders, but things were about to get a lot worse. As the battle raged on the planets surface, so was it raging in the depths of space. The Imperial Navy had tried several times to blockade the system and prevent further Tau reinforcements from landing on the planet, and it was to this end that a task force led by the battleship "His Will" were engaging Tau vessels attempting to enter the system near Walthall. As was typical with this war, both sides gave no quarter and the fighting was fierce with both fleets suffering severe losses. Her drives badly damaged and her hull marked and ruptured from the onslaught of the Tau broadsides, "His Will" attempted to disengage, from the battle. As the behemoth began to turn, her exposed flank was suddenly set afire by scores of explosions, engulfing several of the smaller escorts unlucky enough to be caught in the blast radius. On the bridge of the great ship, multiple red runes began flashing on many of the lectern panels arrayed before the tech adepts and navy officers, sirens began blazing overhead as the ship lurched under further impacts. The holoviews and datapicts showed multiple explosions ripping through both the Imperial and Tau formations and even more red runes lit up. A fleet wide disengage order was issued to all Imperial vessels, and immediately the fleet began to retreat in the face of such disaster. A great flash of light, followed by a thundering noise ripped across the battlefield. At first it seemed to the remaining Imperials that the treacherous xenos had claimed yet another kill, but when word reached Officers on the bridge of "His Will" that the Tau's main battleship had been destroyed it became clear that both forces were under attack from a new aggressor.

Imperial records tell us that both Imperial and Tau fleets came under sudden attack from an Ork scouting fleet, led by the now infamous Guznik Dorkzilla aboard his flagship "Da Killiest". In typical Orky fashion, the green skins immediately aimed their crude vessels at the biggest, most heavily armed enemy ships they could see, reaping destruction and a heavy toll on both Imperial and Tau forces. In the face of this onslaught, a temporary ceasefire fell upon the engaged Tau and Imperial fleets. An uneasy but necessary alliance formed between the old enemies and both sides rallied to defend themselves against the ork menace, hoping to buy enough time to send word back to Neville Secundus of this new development. Although both fleets were subsequently annihilated, their noble sacrifice had allowed a Tau escort to successfully break away from the battle, and it was this ship that brought the dark news to the Tau leaders on the planet's surface.

It was the Tau leader Shas'o Mik'Edavi who first approached the Imperial leaders with an offer of peace. Shas'o Mik'Edavi had been leading the Tau coalition in it's siege of "Red Ish" for the past three months. A fierce and adept warrior, and veteran of numerous campaigns against the green skins, Shas'o Mik'Edavi had a great hatred for the Orks. Upon hearing the news of the impending Ork invasion, Shas'o Mik'Edavi decreed that for the Greater Good, this world must not be allowed to fall into Ork hands. The Tau forces arrayed against "Red Ish" were ordered to stand down, and messages were sent to the Imperial Commanders within the city, requesting an immediate ceasefire and a chance to meet with Imperial High Command to discuss an alliance against the Ork armies.

By this time the Imperial High Command were well aware of the initial Ork attack, and reports were coming in that this was no small raiding party but the leading tendrils of a massive Ork Waaaagh. It quickly became apparent that without further reinforcements, Neville Secundus would soon be overrun with Greenskin filth, the combined might of the Imperial armies in the sector would not be enough to repel the Orks. It was the now famous Commander Swires who spoke first of an Imperial - Tau alliance and who managed to convince Lord Stockporticus of the willingness of the Tau armies to join forces with the Imperial defenders and repel the Ork invaders. Were it not for the respect and popularity the great Commander had earned with civilian and Imperial leaders alike throughout the course of the campaign, Swires may well have been burnt a heretic. So it was an alliance, although fleeting, was struck between the two foes and fighting ceased almost immediately across the entire planet, buying enough time for Tau and Imperial forces alike to be resupplied and redeployed. Although an animosity and hatred for one another still lingered beneath the surface, the armies of the Imperial Guard and Tau put aside their differences for the time being, and begin the arduous task of fortifying their defences in preparation for the Ork invasion.

It was on the twelfth night after the initial Ork attack at Walthall that the forerunners of the Ork Waaagh arrived in orbit around Neville Secundus. A brutal and devastating battle was fought in the space around the planet, with many Imperial crews commending their souls to the Emperor as they sacrificed their own lives and that of their ships with the futile goal to reduce Ork numbers and buy the defenders on the planet’s surface vital time to prepare their defences. But it was all in vain and against such vast numbers the Imperials and Tau alike were quickly forced to disengage and retreat to the outer regions of the system. And so it was, with the vast number of space hulks and Roks casting a great shadow down over them, the defenders on the surface of the planet stood alone to face the green tide that was soon to descend upon Neville Secundus.

Ok...sorry for the big wall of text :)

I'm hoping to get my Imperial Fist 3rd Company finished during this log. I have a few units painted already, photos of which I will upload when I get home. I know Tarsus will be along shortly with his "Neville Secundus PDF" army and TeldurUK with his Mighty Ork Horde! We also have another Ork player who has yet to register and a Tau player who also needs to register. So lets get started!

When it became clear to Imperial High Command that even with the Tau's assistance, the number of Orks now making planetfall would mean Neville Secundus would be lost within the year, a plea for Astartes reinforcements was made. Several Chapters, including the Sons of Medusa and the Ultramarines, had Strike forces within relative close proximity to the Neville System and they each sent a force of battle brothers to the warzone. However it was the proud Imperial Fists who were to make the biggest contribution, for they alone committed an entire Company to the liberation of Neville Secundus. Within two months, The 3rd company, led by Brother Captain Jastan , had broken through the Ork blockade and deployed to the planet's surface to bolster the defences of Neville Secundus and turn the tide in this war.

Ok so here is Brother Captain Jastan himself (I need to remove the ripper from his base at some point....seeing as how I'm now fighting orks....and maybe the odd Tau hehe)

Recently promoted to command of the 3rd Company. Brother Captain Jastan has a led a distinguished career within the Imperial Fists. It was in fact a campaign against the orks during the Rinsten Crusade which first saw Jastan rise to prominence within the chapter. As a member of Tactical Squad Orileous, Jastan was present when the then Company Standard Bearer was slain by a massive brute of a Warboss. Before the banner fell to the ground it was snatched up by Jastan who, along with his squad avenged their fallen comrade. Jastan won much honour upon that field of battle and was later promoted to Brother Sergent. For four decades did Jastan lead his squad in battle, upon countless worlds and against countless foes. It was upon the desolate and scarred surface of Pyms World that Jastan earned his right to lead the 3rd Company. The archenemy had laid claim to this world, traitor and daemon alike reaping destruction amongst it's populace. Brother Sergent Jastan was present alongside the Company Commander, Captain Heiken, when a bloodthirster, summoned from the warp managed to isolate and then assault the Company Command squad. Captain Heiken, armed with "The Fist of Dorn", a mighty and ancient power fist dating to a time when Dorn himself led the Imperial Fists, met this beast in single combat. Heiken was mortally wounded by a sweeping blow from the monster's great bronze axe. Before the daemon could land the finishing blow, Jastan had charged into it's flank. With a prayer on his lips, Jastan dealt the vile thing a titanic blow with his thunder hammer, smashing the beast to the ground before finaling sending the bloodthirster back to the warp with another swing of his weapon. Because of Jastan's bravery Heiken was rescued from death, and later interned into the holy sarcophagus of a venerable dreadnaught. Jastan was promoted to Captain of the 3rd Company, his courage and faith an example to all Astartes.

Again I need to swap out the nid on his base, gotta make it an ork....or maybe some Tau got caught in the cross fire hehehe

Before Brother Reikellan was interned in the ancient sarcophagi of a dreadnaught, he was a brave and furious member of the Company's assault wing. A stubborn warrior, even amongst the stoic Imperial Fists, Reikellan gave no quarter to the enemy. So it was that in M37 during a campaign against the chaos tainted aliens, the Menthax, he alone stood his ground when a massive alien walker charged the Imperial Fist defences. Reikellan delivered a killing shot with his melta gun, vapourising both legs of the infernal machine, but the momentum of the walker carried it forward and Reikellan was crushed beneath its frame. For six hours Reikellan refused to give in to the Emperor's light, until finally the chapter's Apothecary reached his broken body and he was interned into one of the Chapter's dreadnaughts. Reikellan's refusal to give in is an inspiration to all of his Battle Brothers, and whenever Reikellan takes to the field of battle the Imperial Fists will never falter.

Ok, my turn.

My guard army is in tatters at the moment, i have several tanks all painted in a different colour and the same with my guardsmen. Ive started the long process of stripping everything down but havent started re-painting anything yet, but i do have some test models prepared so here goes...

First up i should point out that the army is split into two distinct divisions, first up is the Neville PDF which are are primarily mechanised force mounted in chimeras with battle tank support, all the tanks are stripped down and modified to operate in the ash filled wasteland that the constant mining have turned there planet into. The second section is the elite response force that arrived on the scene early in the conflict, made up mainly of airborne stormtroopers and xenos hunters, these will fill a small percent of my army but add the required background that allows me take somehting other that standard infantry in what is supposed to be a PDF.

So here is my modified chimera, they will all look like this except possibly I may add side armoured skirts but im still undecided. The colours are astro grey and gretchin green, its only base coated now but you get the gist.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d79/swirec/IMAG0027.jpg

Next up is the infantry, these are (heavily) converted plastic cadians, they are made to look a lot like mordians, with the peaked hats and epaulettes sculpted from greenstuff. Ive only made a squad of 10 so far and none are painted in there final colours but here is a photo anyway of one of the early test schemes.

We had a small battle last night, thought I would post some pics of the aftermath. It was a 3 way objective based battle, sadly the orks had already packed up and left before the camera crew got there :)

This is the board were still busy building at the moment. It's split into 3 sections and normally they all go side by side, but we put them in a triangle for the 3 way battle last night. I've just recently built the fortress....awesome model. Hopefully I'll get that painted over Christmas

Well Happy New Year everyone! The log has been a bit quiet due to all the drinking/eating/sleeping and left4dead2'ing we've all been doing over the festive season, but with all that out the way expect to see some more updates soon.

I did actually manage to get some painting done, I've started work on a Landspeeder Storm...I currently have the thing built and sprayed and have started painting up the crew. I'll try and get some WIP shots up later on. I'm also meeting the Ork and Tau player tonight so I'll badger them for some photos too soon as they promised they would help me with this log!

Oh and I finished the Razorback's turret...so I'll post a new picture of that as well

Hello one and all!!

Yes, at long last..the orky friend Fle keeps refering to has finally got around to posting! Yep, that is I.

This is the first time I've collected Orks. My main 40k for a long time were the Tau (of which I had a reputation for having terrible rolls when it came to shooting). Getting squished in combat all the time kept trying my patience, so, after alot of thought, I'd give Orks ago. Finally! Time to charge forward and get into combat! WAAAGGGHH!!

I've attached a copy of pictures of a few units that will appear in my ork army list [Note, since these pictures were taken, I've purchased more orks, undercoated and started painting the skins of some of my Orks, of which I'll post some pictures of soon].

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd25/sparksteruk/Orks%20WiP/DSCF2642.jpg

My plan is to get everything undercoated atleast as I build up the army, then work my way through them by painting the skin first. If I can find my camera this afternoon then I'll get a picture up of how the skin colour is currently looking.

My next post will introduce my Ork Warboss, whose tactics are questionable (even by Ork standards). Frowned upon by many other Ork Warbosses only drives him on. He's got a point to prove on Neville Secundus, you'll fear the name Guznik Dorkzilla!

hi Brainwashed!

Heres how I paint the yellow.

1> Spray skull white undercoat
2> Iyanden Darksun
3> Devlan Mud wash
4> Iyanden Darksun again
5> Bleached Bone highlights

I didn't grab any batteries for my camara as promised :( and I have now completed the predator and landspeeder and have started work on the sternguard, second tactical squad and scout squad...so there wont be any new WIP pics of the vehicles...but ah well....at least the army is nearly finished now so I should be able to get a full army shot up soon. I also need decide on a basing scheme...I tried some brown mud and grass but I don't think it is that effective. Maybe a snow scheme or city scheme will be better.

Ok, i finally have some updates.

First of all i have decided to scrap the mordian style conversions for the majority of my army as it was taking far to long and i am incredibly impatiant. The mordians will be remaining for my command units and for some veteran squads but the main bulk of the force will be a much simpler conversion.

First up we have 2 infantry squads in the new simple style, i have removed the shoulder pads and given them a head swap using westwind productions British paratroopers. The cloth is painted deneb stone with 2 washes of sepia while the armour is astro grey, black wash and highlighted up to white.

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d79/swirec/P1000491.jpg

Next up we have a test model for my stormtroopers, no conversions here and painted with the same methods as the infantry.

And finally my favourite model ever, a conversion for Nork. He is a standard plastic ogre with a lot of green stuff work, and then painted as the infantry. He is also a tester for the mordian final paint scheme. I am part was through making a ripper gun for him which will be added whan its done.

Fle, your colour scheme for Imperial Fists is nicely executed and looks very good- the addition of battle damage has really accentuated this work. I also like the ltras that you've done, a nice break from yellow and looking good! Nice Storm too.

HardNut, those Tau are coming along nicely- I would like to see a primary colour on the infantry tho, make them stand out more... I'm not sure what would be good tho, perhaps some orange or a pale blue.

Tarsus, I really like what you've done with these infantry! Can we have a close up of half a squad or something? Maybe some highlights on the lasguns to define thema little more but the unit looks good. That Deddog is cool!!! Get him finished!!!

Not so keen on the Stormtrooper tho... I would have preferred the armour to be slightly more grey. He needs something to make him stand out from the rank n file. I will wait until they're done.

Keep up the good work, lads. Feel free to slag me off in my own.

Thanks Ragsta, I know exactly what you mean about the storm trooper, i painted him on his own and it wasnt until i put him with the regulars that i realised how alike they looked. I still have to add all the little details like the grenades and little lenses and screens he has so once they are done he might stand out i bit more, but i will have to wait and see.

Nork took me ages to do, i really put loads of work into him to make him look unique and also still fit in with a guard army. I really dont like the look of the GW nork model, but love the idea of an ogryn as a bodyguard.

Obviously none of my models are anywhere near finished, i just needed to get something on the website to show ive not just been sitting on my hands for the past few months :p

Ill get some close ups put up tonight or maybe tomorrow morning.

A lot of good things to see here. Really top notch work on your yellow. I am going to have to take a few cues from ya bud!

Hope to see some more of the 3rd Company.

Thanks Hushrong, I took a bit of a break painting yellow. I've been painting one off models such as a slann, a blood angels dreadnaught and terminator squad, some night goblins, more ultramarines, some eldar guardians and falcon...the list goes on.

On top of this I've just started working on a new gaming board.

However seeing the current Imperial Fists logs, yours included, has put me back in the mood to get painting them again. I'm even thinking of painting up my Land Raider over the weekend but we will see.

Jastan was promoted to Captain of the 3rd Company, his courage and faith an example to all Astartes.

i found this a rather enjoyable piece of fluff to read, the painting is done well, my only greavance is the banner, i would suggest green stuffing the name off of it as he maybe based off of the kantor miniature but he is not kantor as the name states.

UPDATES!!!!

After a very long time on break we are finally moving along with our armies.

My guard is still very much unfinished, but they have received some reinforcents or rather one very large reinforcement.

The pictures were done on my phone so they arent great. The model still isnt finished i have all the hydrolics and armour panels to add yet plus a few gaps to fill, the paint is also there purely to seal the exposed foam. I am still undecided on the final colour, maybe grey or a sand tone.

It uses the plans from the yahoo group bwc-archive i think it has turned our extremely well but there is still lots of work left to do.

Once its done i may even build it a bigger brother.

Really like your fists, your painting is very good but just one thing though you need to drill out your gun barrels it just adds that little bit more to the look of a model. Keep up the good work.:)
