Pick a color Scheme

Pick a Codex for the rules you want to use

Pick a chapter name.

Pick what type of fluff you want for your chapter.

Pick if they follow codex for start, if so use the vanilla (traditional) marine codex.

Pick a name

Make fluff (background)

Choose an army list that suits your fluff

Pick a paint scheme

Go wild =D

I couldn't help thinking, when I read the thread title of "How to make a new chapter," that when a mommy chapter and a daddy chapter love each other very much then...lol.

My advice to you would be, if you can't seem to decide on any of the ones in the book, just make one up. Come up with how you want to paint it (say for instance, "I wanna paint the shoulder pads black and the bodies metal) and just play a bit. Or just leave the models unpainted for now until you learn what you like, then later on you can paint them the way your chapter looks. That might be best, because then you don't have to worry about suddenly finding out that the chapter you like isn't the chapter you've built.

Create Fluff.
Pick chapter name
Pick codex based on fluff.
Pick chapter name based on fluff.
Create colour scheme based on fluff.
Buy models.
Paint models.
Play games.

If you just want a chapter for the table top all you have to do is pick a name and the colors you want to paint them. Then pick a codex to use (SM/SW/DA/BA/BT). If you want to go into more detail then you need to start thinking about where they are from, what they are good/bad at and a whole bunch of other things.

For some guild lines on how to write fluff for your chapter here is a good link.

With so many people out there playing marines, start with writing some decent fluff for your army to set it apart from all the others. Then work out a nice paint scheme that you are happy with and paint a few test models. Then decide which codex you want to use, DH, DA, SM, SW, BA.
Then your away really, and get playing some games. This in my opinion is one of the best ways to write fluff, by playing games. You can then include the armies you played against and the battles you played and there outcomes in your armies own fluff.

If you're new to 40k (I'm assuming if you were a 'veteran' gamer you wouldn't have started this thread) then get the 'normal' Space Marine codex and make a list that has your favourite units from the book in it.

What's your favourite colour? Right, that's gonna be your chapter colour, now find some colours that stands out next to it for the emblem, eyes and trimmings etc.

Paint those favourite units your favourite colour and have some games, see which units work best with your style of play (shooty or assault etc) and have another look in the codex to see what else is designed to play 'your' way - then get some of those units painted up and onto the battlefield.

Need a name? Follow that link above from InquisitorNiels to the section on names (this bit http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=3253), there's lots to inspire there :)

One of my main concerns is that I will pick colors all ready chosen.

Also, come up with a Symbol for your chapter, and paint it freehand onto a banner, sort of like my Orks' banner, that of the Ork-spana (How the heck do you throw a tilda over that N?), the Orks who hail from a glorious planet similar to Spain (Espana).

Fluff is half the fun. :)

who cares? if it is something you really like the look of then it shouldn't matter if "steve" over in another country painted his marines like yours. You aren't going to be playing him anytime.

I guarantee your army will be unique because YOU are the one doing it.

The above suggestions are good and sensible. I'd add one more.

If you are not gong for one of the already defined chapters, and doing your own, then:
Read the general codex marine background properly. Get a feel for what you 'should' have in a marine chapter. Then have your custom one fitting comfortably within that. Don't push the boundaries of the background or codex too far, and you won't get hit too hard by codex and edition changes.

In the history of GW, it's normally armies sitting at the outside edge of the background and/or rules that changes nerf.

can any one give me some names of possible gene-seed lines?

DaSpaceAsians
30-12-2009, 22:53
It's not called gene-seed lines but I think it's primogenitor chapters, essentially the nine loyal original legions. Essentially most chapters can trace their lineage to them IIRC.
List
Ultramarines
Dark Angels*
Imperial Fists
Salamanders
Iron Hands
Blood Angels*
White Scars
Raven Guard
Space Wolves*

Those marked with * are those with a seperate codex and share many similarities with the Ultramarines who Codex Space Marines is based but have differences (Deathwing/Ravenwing, Death Company, etc.) . The only exception is Space Wolves who are very different in organisation (different squads etc,). Also a chapter could inherit flaws from their primogenitors. There is more information about this in Codex: Space Marines

One of my main concerns is that I will pick colors all ready chosen.

Unless you create a colour scheme of pink with yellow spots, then its probably already been done. But that doesnt matter! There are loads of blue SM chapters, but it doesnt mean they are a rip of of say the Ultramarines etc. Pick any scheme you like, even if its been used hundreds of times, and make it your own.

As for background, is there anything that jumps out at you? for example, do you want them to be brutal or very tactical? specialise in certain weapons etc?

You can also look at real armies from the past, romans, vikings etc, as thats what most SM chapters are based on anyway!

And as someone has said, if you want feedback on anything, just post it and see what people say!

Good luck

70% of ALL geneseed comes from ultramarines. So for fluff you can easily say that is where your chapters seed comes from even if you aren't a codex chapter.

As for names for your chapter that is something you will have to come up on your own. Just try to avoid names like "Blood wolves!"

Ok so far I got this Sons of Velorex
Home World: Velorex
Velorex is a forest world with trees miles high, deadly creatures the size of small buildings stalking their pray weather it be another beast or one of the few people of this world. The Sons of Velorex’s fortress monastery has a compound ten square miles this compound is surrounded by walls a quarter of a mile high and half that thick. The grounds are covered with obstacle fields for the training of the Sons main battle force. The Sons excel in hit and run tactics to slowly wear down their foe’s forces. The main fortress is surrounded by another set of walls and eight anti-ship canons. The main mass of the fortress can not be seen from the air do to the fact that 85% of it is a bunker where the sons can if necessary can hold foes off indefinitely.
Pop: 2,465,365

Primarch: Vulkan
Chapter Master: Battle Master Kraxos
War cry: Memento Mari

You mean Memento Mori, right? Good motto.

The description gives me a Green and Yellow paint scheme vibe...

I get an earthy-vibe from the description - all that tunnelling etc.

Maybe a 'stone' colour scheme - greys or browns, highlighted up nicely could look very powerful.

Very nice, it's short and sweet giving you enough to start and plenty of room to expand upon later. Now you need some colors and a symbol. Maybe brown and green armour. I would use what ever the apex (top) predator is on your home world as the chapter symbol. The symbol could be hard depending on how well you can paint. If you can free-hand a really detailed design then go for it. A beast of some kind looking menacing would be great, but if your like me then you can't free hand something that detailed let alone paint it on all my marines! If that's the case then keep it simple something like a tree or a feather. Your chapter name doesn't really limit you to any one design so you are free to make it a whole range of things.

All in all I think you have made a great start. From here you can expand the fluff as you see fit, or just leave it as it is and play games with your guys. Keep us updated as I would love to know what colors you go with as well as what symbol you pick. When you have a model or two painted put them up for all to see. Good luck!

After reading your fluff, I'd like to point out one interesting thing. You've made a pretty big deal about how seriously the Sons of Velorex take their fortifications. The monastery being built into an underground bunker complex? That'll probably survive anything, even Exterminatus protocols. So for fluff purposes, it might make more sense to say that their Primarch was Rogal Dorn, the original fortifications expert. If you use Vulkan as your army leader, that's just fine, since you can use whatever chapter's characters you want. Characters who might fit your idea of stubborn defense against all odds are Pedro Kantor and Captain Lysander.
Perhaps a really dirty, grungy metal color scheme with just a little bit of color.

i was wondering if it is ok to make my own heroes?

DaSpaceAsians
31-12-2009, 22:14
Depends on what you mean by that. If you mean taking an existing character or a generic HQ and convert a model and write a story about him, sure. If you mean creating a character from scratch, that would depend of your gaming environnement.

all you need to do is use your Imagination (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW4tY8mQ_1o)

*sorry, was just watching it haha.

but pretty much what everyone said will do. just go with what you want, do a little planning, and presto! you will have created something thats your own.
