The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2009-2010

Month 5

Happy New year!

Well done to all of you who are keeping up with this so well. You are putting me to shame. However, I hope this year will be a bit less hectic for me than the last and I will find more time for my painting once again. I wish the same to all of you ... a peaceful and happy new year with lots of time for your toys.

This is a big month for some of you. Anyone who has been keeping up with this and used no jokers yet will have painted a 1000 points and have half an army. So its all down hill from now. :D

Collectively we have painted 32,000 so far. Well done everyone. (and thanks to Braad for keeping track of all this so brilliantly)

All the best,
Harry

This is the thread on which you post your work for month FIVE. (The work you have done in the month of DECEMBER).

Please make only one post (for each army) in the first week.

Your post should include:

1) The description and points of the unit. AND YOUR TOTAL POINTS SO FAR.
2) Any additional information you care to share with us about your painting.
3) A Dice roll. (Explained below)
4) Up to six photographs of your months work and the army so far.

The dice role.

With over 250 painters in this years Fantasy tale it would be impossible to try to comment on everyones work. (Although there are some who will try!) We considered splitting into army factions which would have left every one only posting on others painting the same army. Someone came up with the great idea of dicing for it. So you throw a dice and record the score. You then try and post comment on everyone who has the same dice roll as you. In return you can expect comment form all of them. This way each month we will all be commenting on a random selection of other painters work.
(Note: this does not stop anyone posting anything they like about anyones work regardless of the numbers rolled!)

A Word on using photographs

You can use up to six photographs (the maximum allowed in a post by warseer). To show us your months painting and the 'army' so far. The best size for showing your work is 640x480 (It can be smaller or you can use ‘thumbs’ which link to bigger pictures but they must not be bigger or it takes too long for the pages to load). The best thing to do is to resize them, wherever you are hosting your images, and then drag and drop the ‘img code’ directly into the text.

This month (DECEMBERS) WIP Thread.

AFTER THE FIRST WEEK ... This thread will become the 'normal' ... comment and crit’ of others work, Work In Progress (WIP) pictures of your work as it develops, how you are getting on, seeking advice and encouragement for your ideas and your painting and generally chatting about the project, life and the cosmos.

However, please continue to only post your work for the first week. This is to give everyone a chance to post up their finished work before it gets lost amongst a sea of chat and WIP shots.

Thanks again to everyone who has signed up for this madness.

If you have not signed up yet…

If you have not signed up yet and would like to join us you are not to late.
Just post on this thread which army and how many points you intend to paint and then crack on.
Anything you post this month will count for last months painting.
(Although you will have to push on and paint something for next month to catch us up).

If you can not post anything this month …

DO NOT PANIC! … use a joker.
Busy lives calm down again, enthusiasm returns, time presents itself.
When it does 'push hard and 'buy back' your joker by painting extra. If your struggling post and say so. (don't just slip quietly away) You will be amazed by the posts of encouragement and support which come from your fellow painters eager to see you successfully complete this project. Most importantly ... 'Stick with it' ... The prize of getting your stuff painted remains worth all the effort.

What is it all about?

Do you want to paint a 2000 point army in the next 12 months?
Do you want to meet a great bunch, with the same goal who will encourage and support you throughout the process?
Can you do the same in return?
Are you completely bonkers?
Then you have come to the right place! :D

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2009 and finishing with their last post on the last day of July 2010.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys (and Infants!)

Because this is harder than you would think ... This year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month we have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 2000 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 1000 points/month).
I have also added a list for the 'Infants' or Warmaster painters.

The Painters: Thanks to Braad for keeping on top of this so brilliantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.
.....TRY AND MAKE IT CLEAR YOU ARE SIGNING IN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR POST SO I DON'T MISS IT!

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. Write much as you like. We love background. write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

3x plague monks
1x warplightning cannon engineer
10x clan rats (including command group)
1x ratling gun team
1x warplock jezzail
1x poisoned wind globadiers
3x plague censer bearers

BUILD/CONVERSION: One the of the censer bearers was missing his flail so I replaced it with a coal-thingy from Bretonnian bowmen. Engineer for the warplightning cannon was missing a hand so he now has his right arm from ages old 40K squat model. I'm also trying to bend one new clan rat regiment box to be sufficient for 25 models so I build the command group from old skaven models and added some parts from the new box to make them look more along the line.

PAINTING: As always I leisured my way through half of the month and painted like a rabid rabbit the past week and actually managed to meet the terms. I have to say that these new clan rats are much more inspiring to paint than the old monkeys.

BASING: Missing grass and such.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Talk about the lows! I purchased the new armybook (along with the clan rats) and found out that I already have 5 special choices for 2000pts army... My options seem to be to just ignore this and keep painting for variety's sake, use the gutter runners as nightrunners or paint my Skrolk to act as the general so I can take the plague monks as core choices.

Highs of this month included finding the missing engineer for the warplightning cannon and painting the new clanrats. They look MUCH better than the old ones.

POINTS: 214pts.

TOTAL POINTS: 847 Points. - calculated my current standing with the new armybook and gained a total (while using Throt the Unclean as a master moulder). One joker used.

WIP: Regiment of slaves (made from gnoblars with skaven head and tails. These look actually quite cool), war-litter, jezzail champion, some rat-ogres (though these won't even fit in a 2000 pts army without some changes)

Sorry, I've been incredibly lazy miniatures-wise this month. Nothing from me.

I am going to joker this month too. I have been really busy with exams and christmas and so on.

I will paint alot for next month though, so it will hopefully make up for both my jokers.

Looking forward to seeing everybody's entries this month!

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: Dark Elf Harpies

BUILD/CONVERSION: These are Gamezone models. There are a couple of duplicate models - the one on the flying base had a small conversion so it was flying “flat” rather than the wings being vertical. Otherwise these are exactly as they come in the blisters.

PAINTING: I’m never happy with painting skin, which is why you can see two different skin tones. The darker tone was my second attempt which I’m much happier with as it’s smoother and looks more realistic up close. The second tone is various mixes of Dwarf Flesh and Vallejo’s Flat Flesh. The wings are mixed up with Chaos Black and Codex Grey. The blood is done with various shades of red, a red ink and gloss varnish.

BASING: Lumps of slate painted with Adeptus Battlegrey, washed with Badab Black then drybrushed with Fortress Grey and Skull White. GW snow flock added in clumps (mixed with watered down PVA)

HIGHS AND LOWS: I’ve been refusing to buy the GW harpies for years because I hate the models and have been proxying them in my games with Squigs. I’m very happy to have found these gorgeous sculpts at long last and hopefully have done them some justice.

As with all Gamezone models, these required a LOT of preparation work. The joins are always bad and need a lot of greenstuff. Although I’ve been in the hobby now for over 15 years I’ve only ever touched greenstuff in the past few months and find it very difficult to work with. Getting it smooth and blended in is a total nightmare!

I’m not too happy with the red horns on the “champion” model (the one giving the kiss of death to a Bretonnian Knight). I may go back and change them to a bone colour.

STILL TO DO: Paint up the second unit – I’m aiming for two units of 6 by the end of this tale.

UP NEXT: I’m still over points thanks to last months Black Dragon so may have a break next month. I’m slowly working on some Gamezone Dark Riders that should appear in month 7.

POINTS: 77 points.

TOTAL POINTS: 1113 Points.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: Goblin Big Boss Battle Standard Bearer(s) and Orc Big Boss with Shield

BACKGROUND/THEME: Army by the rules of the Ď7 knightsí scenario.

BUILD/CONVERSION: The Goblins are a model from the Dragonrune range, straight from blister. The Orc is from the plastic Boss set.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: The standard bearer was a bit of a pain to paint, but I always have that with standard bearers and metal cavalry. They're difficult to hold without touching previous painted bits too often, causing wear and tear on the paintjob. But two cool models none-the-less! Also the first time I had to paint a skewed logo on a banner, due to the banner waving sideways. I think I managed nice enough.

POINTS: 234
TOTAL: 594

Next month: Savage Warboss (without his wyvern, which will follow after) and maybe the Gorbad model, but I seem to be a bit busy lately, as I'm looking into buying a house.

As the clamour of the city slowly faded with the setting sun, Wenzel let out a heavy sigh. The mustering was going slower than anticipated, the local lords reluctant to answer the call to arms. That was, however, not the most pressing concern at the moment. During the last few weeks a large number of madmen had appeared at the outskirt of the mustering field, trickling in a few at a time and slowly banding together. Their ravings went on through day and night, disturbed the sleep of soldiers and citizens alike. So far the local militia had manged to keep them under control, though, and the new joke on everyones lip was they had finally found a good reason for their halberds – the stench from the unwashed bunch of lunatics was worse than your avareage sewer, and the mere thought of having to engage them close-up could make the most hard-stomached tanner retch.

Still, they had their uses. Come the day of battle, Wenzel would be more than glad to let loose the pack of flagellants at the enemy. Although their ravings, prophesies of doom and repentance bordered on heresy as often as they were true expressions of piety, Wenzel had long ago decided to be pragmatic about it – there were after all many ways to express ones devotion, and he was more than willing to leave the decision of sorting out the good ways from the bad to the holy inqusition. If these mad men were willing to sacrifice their lives in the name of Sigmar, well, Wenzel wouldn't be the one to question if their search for redemption was well-founded or not.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING: 15 flagellants, 9 halberdiers

PAINTING/CONVERSIONS: Nothing special painting-wise. Halberdiers are straight out of the box, flaggies with some bitz-swapping and a statue from the chapell to go with the flaggies in the unit filler.

HIGHS/LOWS: Nice to manage to paint so many minis in one month, boring to paint so many minis of the same type...

ARMY: Lizardmen, some 2000pts

THIS MONTHS PAINTING: Nothing, but a WIP Oldblood on Carnosaur. He'll be painted during the course of this month. I just finished the greenstuff work on him, I'll show some more pictures later, when the GS has dried.

PAINTING/CONVERSIONS: No painting, but the conversion should be obvious. Sword is from the cold one kit (I think), head from Saurus box, shield from a Temple Guard with some feathers - taken from two saurus standards - added.
The oldblood would be given the usual leopard scheme (though slightly lighter but with more contrast) and for the big dino I was planning something similar to the carnosaur on the armybook cover, catachan greenish scales with a bleached bone belly.

HIGHS/LOWS: He arrived just in time for the Tale, glad I could build it for this month. Better pictures of a more finished beasty will follow soon, I hope. I like this guy better than the original version, so I'm pretty happy with the conversion.

POINTS: Let's call it 200 - worth another 250 when done then.

TOTAL: That would make 922 then, almost half-way done!

Die-roll: 6! (if only that would happen more often..)

My first official joker I'm afraid. Laziness, Xmas, an 8 months pregnant wife and an OCD of trying to paint core units like characters means yet another month with nothing to show. I can see myself playing lots of jokers for this tale but I'm not going to give up.
Fantastic painting from everyone so far in the tale, so keep up the good work everyone.

Ok it's a clown but that's close enough.
@ Braad .... My total points should be 828 and not 1028. My first month was a WIP so should actually be 0, my fault for not being clearer.

No More Lies!!!

Dice roll: 5

So after some checking with Braad it has been determined that this lying about how much I have done is just silly so I am going to start posting what I actually painted.

So above what I've alread posted I also have done: a block of 24 warriors with banner and musician, 2 units of 10 miners with banner, 10 quarrellers, 2 bol throwers with engineers, a flame cannon, 2 dragon slayers, 2 rune priests, a bsb, 3 other thanes, the white dwarf, and the anvil of doom.

http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/ee350/Malorian/painting%20dwarfs/IMG_0003.jpg
http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/ee350/Malorian/painting%20dwarfs/IMG_0002.jpg

So here is the updated army shot:

http://i534.photobucket.com/albums/ee350/Malorian/painting%20dwarfs/IMG_0005.jpg

This brings my total to roughly 3800 and allI have left to do is a unit of 20 miners and another unit of quarrellers and I'm done, and this should be completed over the next month.

After this I will continue to paint and post and will either start doing my lizardmen or bretonnians.

Oh... and Harry, don't for a second think my boys forgot about this: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3923348&postcount=69

ARMY: Dogs of War
DICE ROLL: 4
THIS MONTHS PAINTING: Quite a bit! 8 Duellists with Pistols, 10 Mercenary Crossbowmen and 5 Light Cavalry. At 23 models (28 if you include Light Cavalry as 2 each), it's the largest amount of models I've painted in a single month so far.
BUILD/CONVERSIONS: The Pistol Duellists are pretty much straight from the Militia box with a few bits sprinkled around. Crossbowmen are a mix between the new Archers set and Militia Crossbowmen. The leader I believe uses bits from the old plastic-metal Crossbowmen. Light Cavalry are Pistoliers, using arms from old 6th ed State Troops and Militia, and then Ungor spears for the spears themself.
PAINTING: Nothing extraordinary on my paint jobs. It's generally just base coat, wash, and then a layer or two. I had fun painting the Horses actually, I thought they'd be a pain (And the straps were a bit) but they turned out to be a pleasant experience compared to last years Pistoliers.
HIGHS/LOWS: Well, I got them done. Basically in at my local GW during half my lunch breaks painting, but it was nice. The only really low point I suppose, is I got most of my Fast Cavalry done, and then put them aside to get my Crossbowmen done. Then when I returned to them, I found out that I hadn't done some stuff I thought I had (like I had only washed the faces, not highlighted them). So was a tad frustrating!
STILL TO DO: On these guys? Nothing really. Crossbowmen need a bit of grass, but that's it really.
NEXT MONTH: I'm thinking Volands Venators, a Man-Eater if my order from the UK arrives (Problems with the post... was ordered in November :() and hopefully finishing Asarnil and Deathfang. I made some progress on Deathfang this month while I was still working on assembling my XBowmen, so hopefully I finish him off and get my Joker back (Although, I've almost earned it back anyway).

Army: Beasts of Chaos/Beastmen, 1000 Points

Unit(s): Bray-Shaman, Dragon Ogre Shaggoth

Build/Conversion: Nothing particularly special, I replaced the puny Shaggoth kit horns with some Spawn bits and shaved off the little dooders on the Shaggoth's back.

Painting: I spent more time layering and tried to use some colors other than the usual 'sea of browns' in my army.

Still to do: The Shaggoth isn't quite finished, but I thought I'd go ahead and post before the one-week mark anyway. I still need to touch up a number of bits here and there, and finish the tabard/cloth in front. I noticed an unpainted claw in the pictures, as well as some small mold lines I will have to zap in the future.

Highs: Despite the fact that he is a radically different color than the rest of the army, the Shaggoth blends in well with my horde. I think the Shaman turned out well. I was able to buy my joker back, too.

Lows: Ugh, where do I start? From three feet away, the Shaggoth looks nice enough, but up close he is messy no matter what I do. His kind most likely won't be in the upcoming army book either, so motivation was a bit low this month. The claws/horns are especially blotchy. I dig the model, but it is taking me FOREVER to finish!

Points this month: 295 + 75 = 370! I'm going to need the cushion once the semester starts.

Dice Roll: 3

Next month I hope to focus on core, core, and more core. I've been putting it off for too long. Hopefully there will be some solid info on weapon options and whatnot so I don't have to redo anything! :D

Army: Orcs and Goblins (2000pts)

Background/Theme: Warhammer Online inspired greenskins fighting through Empire farmland.

Unit(s): 2 units of 5 goblin wolfboyz with spears, shortbows and a musician; plus a troll.

Build/Conversion: Added some furs to a few of the riders. Also tried to make sure that there were at least 3 spears and shortbows per unit to meet WYSIWYG requirements.

Painting: Nowt exciting really. Decided to work the furs on the riders up from Shadow Grey so the bluish colour vaguely matched the blue armour the rest of the army has.

Basing: Broken Starbucks coffee stirrers, sand, static grass. Hopefully it gives the impression of burnt/ruined Empire farmland.

Still to do: Maybe some tidying up and further highlights if I find time.

Highs and Lows: Getting everything finished early but not having access to a camera until today...

Sorry about the late post, I haven't been able to find my camera(story of my life). This month I have painted a unit of 10 crossbowmen to add to my force.

Highs and lows: Really no problems this month, other then the abysmal pictures! I think i will have to add photography class to my list of things to do:D. Hi there!

Well, some very bad news from me. I won't be able to hold a paintbrush for some time since I broke my right glenoid on the 26th of December (that's the part that holds the shoulder in place). The doctors put it back together with some screws, but it hurts like hell now. I won't be able to lift my right arm for about two months.

Anyway, I painted some Executioners for my Dark Elves, and was finishing up a Battle Wizard and some Handgunners for my Empire Army when it happened (actually I fell riding my bike when it happened :)). I'll try to post pictures later this month of what I did, but for the rest I'm just going to have to write comments on what you guys did. Everything certainly looks great soo far!

Keep up the excellent work, and try not to break any shoulders!

And the monthy "laugh at Avian as he tries to take a group shot" part:

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q438/tarjeiaasen/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/CIMG0236.jpg

Construction:
At times, I thought I would go insane trying to get this monster completed, but after months of work it is finally done and what a relief it is. Some highlights:
- the look of it is inspired partly by the actual Hellcannon, the Forge World Krieg artillery pieces and the Tyranid Exocrine
- the basic shape is styrofoam covered with whatever
- the barrel is a tube covered in bitz, green stuff and pieces of sprue as the reinforcements. A lot of marauder helmets donated their horns to the "spine", and quite a few picks were used as well.
- there is a dwarf cannon kit in there
- the furnace part at the back with the short stacks is the back piece from a Khador Juggernaut
- the legs are sprue, ogre arms, plasticard, green stuff, marauder standard tops, a pair of shields and some other bitz
- the mouth of the barrel is an ogre standard top with some details carved away
- there is a working light built into the barrel. It flashes when you operate the lever you can see to the left of the furnace at the back
- the front claws are from the old fiend set, the middle ones are from the spawn set
- the front wheels are chaos icons and some slices of a plastic tube, the middle ones are slices from a bigger tube and bitz while the rear ones are from the cannon kit
- entrails are green stuff
- the crew are the crewmen from the dwarf cannon kit with green stuff armour and beards and chaos warrior helmets
- argh, argh, argh!

Painting:
Organic parts are painted like the spawn / dragon ogres, mechanical parts are fairly standard. The concept is that the daemon inside is twisting the machine body out of shape and anything it twists enough starts to become organic.

Basing:
As normal.

Highs this month:
Getting lots of good feedback as I was making it which really helped influence the final look of the thing.

...and lows:
Argh, argh, argh!

Some comments: (And I'll do more later)

Ego Ninja: I like them and they add some welcomed color to your so far only nurgle army. The steam tank also turned out well. Are you going to put a name on the front ribbon?

doc_cthulhu: The light effects on the WLC are really cool :)

EmperorNorton: Needs to be cleaned up a bit but it's nice to see some rare character models.

derv: Very cool models and well done on the skin shading.

Braad: Nice BSB

Dark Apostle: Those look very well done. I really like the flagellants.

C-Coen: The conversion looks good, now paint it! ;)

Gazhkull: Nice converted unit. Will look great on the table.

someone2040: They look great but if you added the eyes they would be perfect.

arobe: Nice banner and the unit looks good and scary.

Dino: Good to see someone else gives there miners some command :) Keep up the good work.

Schmacker: I think the layering worked out well but the thing that stands out to me is his weapon, it looks spot on.

smokemeakipper: The mix of models looks a little fun but it'll fit right in an orc army :)

8bitMummies: The conversion work really paid off, and I hope your shaman enjoys his new spells ;)

Bluesabre: I always liked that model and it's a shame no one ever uses it. Good to see it painted so well.

Catferret: It looks good but adding the eyes to the goblins (or making them brighter) would make it perfect.

Dakkapants: Your yellows always work out well. Now you just need to add eyes.

Lt dougheim: Cool models painted well. The reason I love these tales :)

Calibretto: What can I say, that unit looks great. Good work on the banner, it was worth it.

Totengraber: Once again nice rust effects. The dark spots on their chests seem to stand out too much though.

Lord Obsidianus: Not used to seeing blue on dark elves but it seems to work ok.

BeatTheBeat: The warlock conversion was a good idea. Keep on painting those rats, I'm sure there's lots to go.

Avian: This has been a long time coming and I'm glad to see it finished. It looks great!

Fabius Bile: If it wasn't for the fact that I hate getting mowed down by those guys I'd like them a lot more ; )

Sorry for not commenting on anyones work last month.

We’ve now had so many people drop out it’s not such a tall order commenting on everyone this month…

Ego Ninja: Those Daemonettes look very nice. I really like the skin tones and hair colour. Any chance of a closeup shot of the champion? The photo is a bit too dark!

Ego Ninja: Love all the dark metal tones throughout. You have a brilliant colour scheme for this army and it’s looking VERY impressive so far.

Doc_cthulhu: You are getting through a large amount of stuff each month, respect to this man! I think you went a bit over the top with the light source on the engineer, but otherwise looking good.

EmperorNorton: Both models are nicely done. Looking forward to seeing these guys based up.

Braad: How characterful is that standard bearer, love it! What did you use for the base on the Orc Boss?

Dark Apostle: Those Flagellants are incredible. The skin is very well done and all the muted tones work so well together. What recipe did you use for the skin?

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Good use of the tomb king bits. The wolves blend in a bit too much with the bases for my liking, but otherwise this is a nice, large unit.

Malorian: Slow down, you’re putting us all to shame! How did you paint the beards, they are nicely done.

Someone2040: This is a very nice unit, but let down I think by the lack of eyes and the messy edges on the bases.

Arobe: Very inventive. I really like what you’ve done here. The ghoul heads on the skeletons are a brilliant idea, and your zombie bases are full of character. I’d really appreciate it if you could post some bigger pictures of the zombie bases.

Dino: Fantastic conversions, as always!

Schmacker: Very nice all round. Can we get a pic of the priests cloak?

Smokemeakipper: Lovely old troll models, you’ve done them justice! The bases are a bit incoherent for a unit, but otherwise excellent work. The snotlings are also excellent. How old are some of those? I don’t recognise most of them.

8bitMummies: The painting is excellent, but even better are the bases. Very nice work. What did you use for the small leaves?

Bluesabre: Good to see you are persisting with the Dark Elves. I love the crisp painting on the cloaks. The blue in particular is very striking.

Catferret: The wolves are very good. The different tones in the fur work really well and looks realistic. The skin on the gobos is a bit dark for my liking and makes the blue across quite bright, but that’s my personal preference!

Dakkapantz: How many sprues are under that table!!! That’s a nice looking army you have there. The white on the feathers is very well done – what paints did you use for that?

Lt Dougheim: You can’t beat those old classic ogres. Excellent work on the skin and the green clothing in particular.

Calibretto: The freehand on that banner is very well done. Did you use a pen to draw it?

Totengraber: Very effective rust. What recipe did you use for this?

Lord Obsidianus: Give those bases another coat of paint. The models are nicely done but the bases catch my eye more than the deadly looking bolt throwers! The blue works very well.

BeatTheBeat: Like the slaves idea. Your army is coming along really nicely.

Avian: Now that’s what I call a hellcannon! That is a crazy amount of converting, good job!

Fabius Bile: Looking good. The army shot is the really impressive bit for me, full of colour and nicely painted all round.

doc_cthulhu: The varied colours for the clanrat clothing is great. Makes them look like a proper rabble.
EmperorNorton: Have you thougt about some blue or black edging on the barding? It would be a simple way to liven it up.
Derv: The skin turned out well despite your misgivings. Good work.
Braad: Nice pose on the orc, he looks quite stoic.
Dark Apostle: Great unit filler in the flaggies.
C-Coen: Good start on that Oldblood. Looking forward to seeing the painted version.
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Interesting to see night goblin riders on the wolves. It worked well.
Malorian: That's a lot of stunties already. Looks like you don't need any motivating from us any more.
someone2040: Great use of various kits there. They match the metal Dogs of War models well.
arobe: That's a lot of models you did this month. Well done on hitting target despite the quantity. You've maintained a great standard of painting across them all.
Dino: Great dragon ogre conversions, they look dead mean!
Schmacker: The priest really stands out compared to the rest of the army.
smokemeakipper: Interesting shade of blue on the trolls. I like it.
8bitmummies: Great to see those brayshamans still looking good despite their age. Your painting has done the model justice.
Bluesabre: I really like the base for your sorceress. I may have to steal that style at some point.
Dakkapantz: The effort you put in on those crossbowmen really shows. Good job.
Lt Dougheim: Great conversion work on your battle standard.
Calibretto: Awesome freehand on that standard. It looks great.
Totengraber: I understand how you feel about painting all that ogre skin. I seem to remember it taking forever when i painted my ogres.
Lord Obsidianus: I like the blue bolt throwers. Makes a nice change from the usual colours I've seen.
Matrim_Cauthon: Sorry to hear about your injury. Hope it heals swiftly.
BeatTheBeat: Nice conversion for the Warlock Engineer, great use of parts.
Avian: Looks like all the effort paid off. That's a great hellcannon.
Fabius Bile: Well, looks like somebody did their research on horses. Great work with the various markings.

@Ego Ninja: Interesting colour scheme on the deomnettes. I particularly like how their eyes seem to glow. Very evil-looking. Steam tank looks good too.

@doc_cthulhu: I love those clanrats. Superb rusty metalics, and the blue cloth and banner looks realy great. Source lighting is nice Ė maybe you should add some green on some sharp edges further away from the completely green area as well?

@EmperorNorton: Solid paintjob, but as you say, something is needed on the horse's armour Ė maybe just add some blue (like on the knights panther in the Empire Army book) would go a long way if you don't want to spend too much time on it? Warrior priest looks fine.

@Derv: Much better than GW's harpies. Can't say that the ruff greenstuffing shows in the pics Ė but to make sure you get it smooth, try not to work it too much until it has started to cure, and yoiu can also smoothing it by gently rubbing it with very wet fingers.

@Braad: The freehand banner looks mighty cool, and I like the base of the Orc Big Boss (although he's obviously defiled an empire statue...)

@C-Coen: Nice conversion, now let's see some paintjob to match it!'

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: The wolves fur looks great. Maybe the gold could benefit from some extra depth, maybe a wash of Devlan Mud?

@Malorian: You do paint fast... what can I say Ė impressive!

@someone2040: As you said yourself Ė a lot of minis in one month. I love the crossbowmen, very full of character.

@arobe: I like the variety you have created by mixing different kits, and yout attention to the bases are just great.

@Dino: Very nice. I like the flames. The unit of dragon ogres is great-looking.

@Schmacker: A very vibrint yellow, very striking.

@smokemeakipper: Cute snotlings! Is the troll to the far right a GW troll?

@8bitMummies: The shaggoth looks impressive with those horns. And his axe is really good Ė how did you achive the worn effect? Stippling/drybrushing?

@Bluesabre: Very clean paintjob. Keep it up!

@Catferret: Looks great, nice, blue fur.

@Dakkapantz: Nice unit. Love the yellow, and the feathers are very nice.

@Lt Dougheim: You never fail to impress. I love your halflings, and the old ogres are fantastic, and superbly painted to boot!

@Calibretto: Nice freehand banner Ė well worth the time it took to paint.

@Totengraber: Amazing rusty metal.

@Lord Obsidianus: Great idea to stick the bolt thrower on circular bases Ė looks mighty fine!

@BeatTheBeat: Looks fine, though it's hard to tell exactly how fine from the pictures.

@Avian: finally we get to see the cannon in its finished state Ė superb conversion on both cannon and crew.

@Fabius Bile: Looks great, although better pics might be needed to really do them justice. The GW horse-painting guide is quite nice Ė I've used it myself and it really helps to get a "real" look to the horses when it comes to colours as well as markings on legs and head etc.

@saltpappa: Crisp painting Ė those beards looks ace!

Hey all,

Ego Ninja: nicely painted unit! Cool color scheme, nice to see a Slaanesh army that isn't tentacle pink!
Those Empire are top notch! Love the nice clean white and brown uniforms.

Doc_cthulhu: Cool rats. I like the slightly disorganized look to the unit, only proper for a unit of Skaven. Those light effects look great! Keep it up.

EmperorNorton: Nice Middenheimers! The blue looks great, and the priest's beard is really good.

derv: Those Gamezone models are crazy! Way better then the GW ones. Very dynamic.

Braad: Nice basing and cool conversions. I love how the Ork and Orcs bitz are completely interchangeable for either army, making them way more diverse.

Dark Apostle: As I said on your thread, absolutely stunning work! Unbelieviable painting, conversions and attention to detail.

C-Coen: Awesome! Can't wait to see that guy painted.

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Really good work! I hope that you aren't fielding a unit of wolves at 15!:D

Malorian: Oh my COW!!! You are either a really fast painter, or have WAY to much time on your hands!:D I wish I had that kind of work ethic. Awesome looking army!

Someone: Hooray! Dogs of war for the win!!! Glad to see your still in the tale. Those light cavalry are loaded if they can afford all of that gold armour! The red and green really work well together, nice and subdued. Keep it up!

arobe: Awesome! Those ghoul skeletons are really neat!

Dino: Nice models, really like the dragon ogre conversions.

Schmacker: Never seen yellow and purple skinks before, I like him!

smokemeakipper: Awesome greenskins(or blue:D). Are those old trolls? They look neat.

8bitMummies: dem beasties are really good. Love the shaggoth's skin.

Bluesabre: Amazing! A Dark Elf army that isn't purple! Great painting!

Catferret: I paint my skin the exact same as yours, it's great! And I really like the wolves fur.

Lt.Dougheim: Absolutely incredible ogres, and the BSB is top notch. Fantastic army!

Calibretto: Greatswords! You did a great job on the banner, I wish i had those freehand skills. Mine always look wierd or disproportional for some reason.

Totengraber: great ogres! The rusty armour and bases are great, but I think your ogres must have been living in a cave for a while, as they are a little pale!:D

Lord Obsidianus: awesome bolt throwers, love the look of the models, as much as I hate playing against them haha!

Matrim_Cauthon: Ouch! Sorry to hear that, I really love your models. Get better soon!

BeatTheBeat: Like the skaven, though the bases are looking a little flat and bare, are you going to add anything to them?

Avian: That hellcannon is an amazing piece of work! Great conversion.

Fabius Bile: Yay! Outriders are looking great! Woe betide any foo who gets in the way of their guns!

saltpappa: Love the old dwarf models! Very nice painting on those fellows!

Cheers

Well I can't make up for not commenting last month by commenting more this month (since I normally comment on everyone anyway) so you'll be getting no penance from me :p

PAGE 1

@ Ego Ninja (DoC): Great stuff. You’re Slaanesh scheme works really well with the Nurgle one, which is something I don’t normally see.

@ Ego Ninja (Empire): How about ‘Pictor Contraho Vires’ for a name? Or ‘Validus Penicullus’ (which I assure you is not dirty :p)? Very nice painting.

@ doc_cthulu: Good work. The Clanrats are excellent, but I’m not too fond of the OSL on the cannon, a bit overdone I think.

@ EmperorNorton (Middenheim): Nice work. The rider is great, but I agree with you that the horse needs a little something extra, though I don’t know what. Maybe some sort of trim around it’s armout?

@ EmperorNorton (Middenland): Stop the presses! EmperorNorton is actually happy with his own work :p. He is really well done, the face and beard in particular.

@ derv: Once again, you make me want to buy Gamezone models... Excellent work as per your usual.

@ Braad: While I’ve always thought that the Orc Hero plastic kit served better as a unit champion then a character, you’ve used it well. The Goblins however, are fantastic. Need to work one of those into my Mounted Goblins somehow...

@ Dark Apostle: I had to read your post to understand that giant grey ghost throwing fireballs initially... Very nice work once again, I’m quite happy with how the flagellants look in the grey tones as I’ve got similar planned for them in a future army.

@ C-Coen: Nice conversion, looking forward to seeing it finished.

@ Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Great stuff. The Tomb King shields look really good on the unit, ties them together.

@ Malorian: You’ve managed to paint that much since this TOFP started? Looks like you’re going to put last year’s huge point painters to shame...

@ someone2040: Those crossbowmen militia are excellent. Might have to ‘borrow’ that conversion.

@ arobe: Are you using Back to Basix bases? Those zombie conversions are ace, much better than the current models.

@ Dino (Dwarves): Great work. The candle’s on the Miners is actually my favourite bit from you this month. Which is odd since it is such a trivial thing...

@ Dino (WoC): Very nice work. Not much can be said that I didn’t say for the last set of Dragon ogres.

PAGE 2

@ Schmacker: Great work. The skin came out really well, you should be pleased. As for the feathers, maybe a highlight on the red?

@ smokemeakipper: Nice work. Are those all GW trolls? I don’t recognise the two on the right.

@ 8bitmummies: Excellent work. The Shaggoth is fantastic. Though I am admittedly more interested in the monsters initiating the frontal attack and the assassin sneaking up on him from behind the picture frame :p.

@ Bluesabre: Great work. You’re colour scheme works really well on that model, even more so then the normal GW scheme.

@ Catferret: Good job. The only critique I have is that the boil on the troll’s stomach looks like an eye and is freaking me out...

@ Dakkapantz: Excellent work. A really nice addition to your force. You should send your recipe for painting the feathers to Schmacker as that might solve his problem.

@ Lt Dougheim: That chicken head banner is fantastic. I’d recommend using those Ogres as a Dogs of War choice or something though (can Empire even take them anymore?) as they are too awesome looking to be unit fillers.

@ Calibretto: I see Lokhir Fellheart has some adoring fans amongst the manlings now... Great work this month, they came out really well.

@ Totengraber: Very nice, though the Bellower in the Bulls kind of looks like a racoon with those eyes. The shading is a bit too intense there.

@ Lord Obsidianus: Great work, the blue/gold combo works really well. How about a Dark Green for the Cold Ones? Not very original I know, but I think it would best suit the blue/gold armour combo.

@ Matrim_Cauthon: Sorry to hear that. The TOFP seems to be an attractor of injury prone bike riders, you’re probably the third or fourth painter to injure their shoulder on a bike since the TOFP first began.

@ BeatTheBeat: The clanrat banner and the Engineer’s goggles are fantastic, well done.

@ Avian: Well I can’t laugh, my group shots are even worse :p. The Hellcannon conversion is excellent, but you couldn’t work in some blue or yellow into the paintjob? It seems a little bit bland in comparison to the rest of the army. Though I’m not actually sure where you could work those colours into it...

@ Fabius Bile: Very nice, the horses came out really well.

PAGE 3

@ saltpappa: Once again you prove how much better the old dwarves are compared to the current ones. The bright colours are fantastic.

Hopefully I can get pictures up Tuesday. It's going to be 44 degrees Celsius here tomorrow so I'm not even going to think about going outside or even opening up a curtain for some natural light. Pretty sure my models would melt...

@ Braad: While Iíve always thought that the Orc Hero plastic kit served better as a unit champion then a character, youíve used it well. The Goblins however, are fantastic. Need to work one of those into my Mounted Goblins somehow...

That's the whole point of the broken statue in the first place. It makes him look a bit bigger, and thus the right size for a big boss. And I really needed an orc big boss with a shield, so now I have one :)

Gobbo's on chariot maybe?

Doi

Dark Apostle: Man, that smooth-looking paint is great!

Totengraber - All looking good. Really like the skin.

Thanks!

Totengraber: I understand how you feel about painting all that ogre skin. I seem to remember it taking forever when i painted my ogres.

Indeed. I'd have a bunch more done if it werent for that skin!

@Totengraber: Amazing rusty metal.

Thanks!

Totengraber: great ogres! The rusty armour and bases are great, but I think your ogres must have been living in a cave for a while, as they are a little pale!

Yeah, they came out a little more pale than I intended, but I think it looks suitably Ogre-y. Thanks for the compliments!

@ Totengraber: Very nice, though the Bellower in the Bulls kind of looks like a racoon with those eyes. The shading is a bit too intense there.

Yeah, I think my Devlan mud lost some of it's water content when I left the pot open for a few hours and it went on a little thicker than intended. Thanks, though!

Rightyo, motivation returned and computer problems solved so it's time to post.

ARMY: Ogre Kingdoms

UNIT: The Effigy of the Maw (Ogre Butcher)

BACKGROUND: The idea for this conversion came from a lyric from a song. 'Speaking by the name of seti. The effigy speaks through a mask made of human skin' from "Blood Vortex" by Bloodbath. Just replace 'Seti' with 'The Maw' and you have my background.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Not being a fan of the official Butcher models, I decided to take a stab at making my own from a Bull model. I bulked the entire model above the belt line with greenstuff to get the point across that it's the Butcher (being able to lift my shirt and look at myself in the mirror helped me get the proportions right :p). I also had to greenstuff the mask, the pointing finger and the join where the cleaver meets the arm as I didnt give him a hand.

PAINTING: My usual methods plus the Blood Tutorial that Dark Apostle and Catferret showed me.

BASING: A MiniNatur groundcover sheet that I cut to fit the bases. Still need to add the flowers but I still haven't decided on a colour...

HIGHS AND LOWS: Well a big low would be losing all motivation to continue with the model at about 80% done for various reasons causing it to take me a month longer then intended. And I think that I should have bulked him out a bit more, next to an Ogre I didnt give a gut plate he is noticeable bigger, but not next to one with a gut plate...

As for highs, finally finishing him! And how well the blood turned out.

POINTS: 180

TOTAL POINTS: 550 (buys back my Joker from last month)

And now some more comments:

@ Inquisitor Pariah: Very nice, I don't think there is too much blue on the Corsairs at all. What are you going to do for the replacement head? Not exactly like you could bits order a head that old.

@ Joseph Vintilla: Nice work. Not too keen on the banner though, the symbol doesn't seem very Chaos like.

EDIT: Pretty sure my pictures are worse this month then normal. Grainy, colour not quite right, lost some highlights (so the Butcher's back looks flat)...

Doi: Very nice conversion and the blood work is spot on.

Joseph Vintila: That unit champ looks too badass to be just a unit champ :)

Inquisitor Pariah: I didn't even know there were old corsairs... I think you are right and they are a little too blue. If I didn't see them with the rest of the army I'd probably think they were high elves (ohhh the shame). Witch elves are nice but the eyes would really finish them.

Hi Guys.
Unfortunately I'm going to have to pull a joker for now, and hopefully do 200pts next month. I have a bunch of things to make for a tourney soon, and I have to concentrate on getting them all to a basic level, so I should have half of about 300pts painted, and then I'll finish them off over the next month.
If anyone wouldn't mind commenting on my doomwheel character at the bottom of this page http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70037&page=6 in my thread.

Comments galore:
Ego Ninja: Those Daemonettes look great. Nice muted palette. I especially dig the green color. Your Steam Tank looks great as well! Again, the shading is very nice all around.
doc_cthulhu: Your Skaven are turning out well. The source lighting is nice on the cannoneer (?), and that motley assortment of Clanrats really fits the theme.
EmperorNorton: Karl Franz looks nice. I agree that the horse's armor needs something to break it up a bit, but I am unsure what to suggest; I'm too used to rusting/goring everything up by default. :D The warrior priest came out great.
derv: It is good to see the gamezone harpies with a brighter paintjob, I could never make out the details in other pictures I have seen online. They came out nice! The flesh tones are spot on, and contrast nicely with the black wings.
Braad: Wow, those bases RULE. Really solid bright colors on those greenskins. Excellent job!
Dark Apostle: Every month I find myself more and more impressed with your stuff! Those Flagellants are awesome. Perfect color choices in my opinion. The Halberdiers look just as crisp and clean as the rest of your empire. Damn.
C-Coen: That Oldblood will be a blast to paint. Good pose. Maybe a little green stuff on that thigh join?
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Nice Wolf Riders! That faded red color is excellent.
Malorian: The Dwarves look great. I don't know how you do it. I'm lucky to have scraped together the 500 or so points I've done since the TOFP began.
someone2040: Congratulations on all of the finished models! Everything turned out well.
arobe: Excellent Grave Guard, and I dig the creative approach to your zombies. It goes without saying that your base work is exceptional. This army will look awesome as it grows.
Dino: As usual, great vibrant painting! The Miners' candle-hats are very eye-catching, and your Dragon Ogres look fierce.
Schmacker: Nice Skink Priest! I dig the yellow. The army shot really shows off the array of colors you are using. The water effect on the base didn't show up in the picture very well, but it probably looks great across the army itself.
smokemeakipper: I love model diversity in an army- those trolls are awesome. Normally I would cringe at the bright blue flesh, but you really made it work. The highlights look very smooth. Cool Snotlings, too!
Bluesabre: Outstanding Sorceress. The texture and coloring on the Cold One is great. Excellent base, too. Her skin looks spot-on, too!
Catferret: Wow, you really nailed those wolves! They look perfect, especially in conjunction with those great bases. It looks as though it has just rained on that terrain. I would maybe go with one more wash on the Goblins' skin, but I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the camera washout more than anything else. Cool troll. Good job!
Dakkapantz: Great Crossbowmen! This thread has no lack of crisp, impeccable empire troops. Still digging that color scheme, too.
Lt Dougheim: Cute li'l Halfling dooder (If you don't mind my saying so), and really neat Ogres! That banner is impressive, the green really leaps out on both the clothes and the banner itself.
Calibretto: Excellent banner! (Underground Cthulhu cult? I smell heresy. :p) Their bases look nice, too- I have to be honest and admit that I thought the snow was stone at first, and it looks great either way!
Totengraber: More consistent and totally awesome Ogres. You make it difficult to comment without sounding redundant! :D Those Ironguts look great, excellent rusting on their helms.
Lord Obsidianus: Cool Bolt Throwers. I dig the unique trim color on your bases, but I would maybe give them one more coat in the future. I agree, the blue is very nice, and unique in a Dark Elf army.
BeatTheBeat: Nice Skaven! Cool conversion on that Warlock Engineer. The bases are a little flat for my taste, but definitely bring out the dark colors in the models!
Avian: You've heard it a million times by now I imagine, but that Hellcannon seriously rules. Excellent job. Very inspiring work.
Fabius Bile: Nice Outriders! Their horses came out very realistic. That's some precise work on the eyes.
saltpappa: The beards on your dwarves came out perfectly! I like that you use bright colors but keep them muted and subtle.
Inquisitor Pariah: The blue on the Corsairs is definitely eye-catching, but I think some definition on the scales would fix it right up! I love that green you've used on your Witch Elves, but maybe some more detail or washing in the flesh would really bring them out? That army shot is impressive, especially in your brooding scheme. Good job!
Joseph Vintila: Cool Marauders! I really like that blue color. Maybe take one more go at the banner just to roughen up the edge of that spiral pattern a bit, make it look more scrawled and manic? Great idea, by the way!
Doi: I have to echo everyone else here and say that you have outdone yourself on those gore effects! I need to give mine another shot now. The clean appearance of your Ogres only makes it more frightening, and the green stuff work on the face is great! Awesome job on the gut, too.

Thanks again for all of the inspiring comments, dudes/dudettes. This thing is really keeping me painting!

8bitMummies: The painting is excellent, but even better are the bases. Very nice work. What did you use for the small leaves?

Thanks a lot! They are actually just bits of crushed fallen leaves from my neighborhood. I'm glad the effect works, I was afraid it looked bad.

@8bitMummies: The shaggoth looks impressive with those horns. And his axe is really good Ė how did you achive the worn effect? Stippling/drybrushing?

Thanks, I'm stoked that the horns don't look silly! For the axe, I drybrushed boltgun metal onto a thin layer of tin bitz over scorched/bestial brown and then did some small highlights with chainmail.

@ 8bitmummies: Excellent work. The Shaggoth is fantastic. Though I am admittedly more interested in the monsters initiating the frontal attack and the assassin sneaking up on him from behind the picture frame :p.

Haha, thanks! The Shaggoth was promptly dispatched by these cheap plastic assailants. It was a nightmare of ugliness.

Hope to see some more submissions before the month is through. The holiday season is a serious hobby killer, though. Where are all the awesome Tomb Kings armies at?

I already finished my Savage Warboss for this month, just needs a shield, so I can't go and show that already. But to keep you informed, here's what I'm already working on for the next month:

You'll have to get a picture of it charging into an army with the light coming from behind so the shadows of his massive wings cover their troops :D

Just found this post and thought I'd stick my head in. After seeing the amazing entries, I am now fully motivated to have as close to 2000pts done by the cutoff date. Do you mind if I join so late in the game, and month, please message me to delete this post if it's too late. (Edit: Thanks for letting me in Braad!)

After recently returning to Warhammer at the start of December and Warseer soon after that, i've been trying to think of another Fantasy army to run against my Lizardmen, something strange and unique. I was digging through my box of stuff when I found my old copy of Storm of Chaos and got to thinking. After some looking around on the net, and calculating prices, I decided on my next army: The Slayer Army of Kadrak Kadrin. About as unusual as I could think of (except the Snotling horde I played in a 2 week build, paint and play tournament at my old shop)
Reguardless, my first entry:

Entry #1 - Late join, sorry again.
Ill do atleast 200pts a month (was that men?)

Army: Slayer Army of Kadrak Kadrin (Storm of Chaos)

Unit: Daemon Slayer Lord
Cost: 316pts
Total: 316pts

Painting: Spent an afternoon on him, Haven't based him yet as I am yet to decide how to base the army, I'm thinking rocks but unsure yet. Need to add some tattoos somewhere.

Dice Roll: 5

Comments:
Malorian: Awesome army! Really looks cohesive when set out in your army shot. Love the thane on the right in the 2nd pic, he really stands out.
Dino: The miner Standard Bearer looks Wicked! Is that the usual one or is it converted? And the Dragon Ogre conversions are phenomenal! Really Well done
Bluesaber: Love the effect on the Cold one, reminds me of Jurassic Park.
Joseph: The Champion is awesome and the unit comes together very nicely!
Avian: Just an awesome model, needs to be mentioned again, and again!

For next month, I'm going to attempt to convert a block of Warriors into Slayers to see if its a viable option to save some money, mind have to spend some time green stuffing bare chests. Also have and old White Dwarf model with Great weapon to be used as a Dragon Slayer
Comming soon: Long Drong's Slayer Pirates and I'm looking to mount a slayer on this model here: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1620224&prodId=prod1140122

Thanks again!

Hi all, good looking work so far.

Unfortunatly I'm still having camera issues, so can't post last or this months work yet, hopefully should have some pics nearer the end of the week.

I did finish my battle standard bearer though, and have started work on this months gyrocopter, I'll put more details in when I post the pics, hopefully friday or so.

@ Braad: Very nice. Pretty sure you can never go wrong with Balrog wings!

@ Shazarn: Good work on that Slayer. Are any of the Avatars of War Dwarves going to make into into your force?

Well I am now (bar basing) finished this month's work. Sadly any hope I had of getting back to where I wanted to be model wise (which would be two more Bulls) at the end of the month has more or less vanished as I've got to work extra shifts at work this week and most likely next week too. And they want me to start at six in the morning :(.

well then. i thought i would get all my lizzies done for this month.
unfortunately i don't know where i am right now with painting. i've had so much stuff come up with getting house work done, and moving my business and trying to find a night job... meh..
i managed to get my last two terradons done, the carnosaur done, engine half done, and still haven't gotten to the last unit of saurus. i'll see if i can't snap some quick photos and get em up, but i haven't painted in 2 weeks (not by choice)
time may change when i start staying home with the baby and working part time waiting for school to start so i don't want to just up and quit, but i may have to take a leave of absence for a couple months.
i'll paint when i can to try and keep up with at least one army.
you guys are rockin on this stuff. just wish i had the time i had to paint like 2 months ago!
take care

Just undercoated next months models in £1 shop primer...hopefully it won't turn out too bad!

Replies:

@ Totengraber - I agree! I'll be hitting them with some Tharaka Green soon!

@ Doi - I've got a set of the new Corsairs so I'll grab one from there (although at this rate I've used so many heads

@ Malorian - They'll be the back ranks so I'll see how the front ranks look iwth green cloaks before I repaint them - If they can hide at the back with their bad cloaks they will! The WE will have to be done too!

@ 8bitMummies - I agree on the skin tone - will try out some Gryphonne Sepia later

Comments:

Page 2:

Schmacker - good use of yellow and purple on your shamen I could never get purple to work for the lizards but I might be inspired now!

smokemeakipper - I really like your natural skin tones for the goblins and trolls

8bitMummies - Excellent dark, broody Beastmen!

Bluesabre - Good gold effects - like it!

Catferret - You've got a good feral look going there - those goblins actually look a bit scary

Dakkapantz - Again, excellent paint scheme!

Calibretto - Really good contrast between the armour and the snow

Lord Obsidianus - nice round bases - are they 60mm 40k bases?

BeatTheBeat - good scabby skaven - good luck with the moving!

Avian - Love the Chaos Dwarfs

Fabius Bile - Very well painted horses - might have to steal some ideas...

Page 3

saltpappa - good old school models with a really good paintjob - thumbs up

Page 4

Joseph Vintila - Good work on the standard bearer!

Doi - I like the bases - where did you get the long grass from?

Braad - Excellent work in the skin!

Shazarn - cool Blanchesque painting (is that even a word?!?)

Just to show you guys that I'm still hanging on with my fingertips and painting along.. Real life definately got in the way last few weeks/months so I hope to catch up in the upcoming months. The above also explains why I paint different models from different units, If I was to paint one unit at a time I would throw my brushes in a fire and surely quit warhammer and the tale..

ARMY: Dammaz Uzkul Classic dwarfs

UNIT: 4 Thunderers (''with shields''), 1 longbeard, 2 slayers, 2 warriors.

PAINTING: The standard purple and black colour scheme I use people don't expect with dwarfs.

STILL TO DO: Get new shields for the warriors and longbeard and the basing. (and posting pics)

HIGHS: Being kind of proud I haven't officially dropped out tho' my point seem to differ.

ARMY: Empire

UNIT: General with great weapon & full plate - extra general for large games or my all foot army

PAINTING: nothing special

LOW: Having my first NMM attempt turn out very much like oddly blended grays

HIGH: I haven't focused on bases at all in my painting and was surprised by how much visual interest was created by adding a little something to the base.

Comments on the excellent posts so far - hope I didn't miss anyone.

PAGE 1

@ Ego Ninja: Excellent demonic eyes. & what’s your recipe for the main metal color on the steam tank? I like the effect.
@ doc_cthulu: Good work. I like the way the clanrats have some more color but definitely the before stage of a laundry detergent commercial
@ EmperorNorton: High standard work as usual. I’ve always liked that particular Ulric model but wish they’ld given him something more interesting to carry than the book
@ derv: beautiful painting on scary models. And I agree about the green stuff sounding easier to work with than it is.
@ Braad: Very well executed – although interesting that the waving banner is subject to things like gravity and wind – but the banner with goblin climbing it isn’t
@ Dark Apostle: Great stuff. I quite like the new flagellant models and your scheme and painting set them off well - even if the models are a little over-muscled for the ascetic lifestyle.
@ C-Coen: will be a sight to behold
@ Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: I’m always surprised that goblins don’t lose more of their equipment considering how they behave. I do like the shields (tomb king?) but might have marred them a bit more.
@ Malorian: We’ve probably all lied on occasion to hide our obsession
@ someone2040: I like the crossbow/militia mix and match, and nicely painted.
@ arobe: Good job on the conversion and painting.
@ Dino: I’ve been meaning to comment since I first saw your dwarves that they’re looking very good and -- as a kid in the 70s I used to ski in one of their brightly colored sweaters. Also shouldn’t the RedGreen clan have a little duct tape somewhere on every model?
*************************

PAGE 2

@ Schmacker: Very nice – imagine you’ve gotten a variety of feather advice – I found a dark wash, drybrush with original color and then quick highlight sets feathers off nicely.
@ smokemeakipper: You’ll have a good blue and green army there. I like the mixture of new and old trolls.
@ 8bitmummies: Great painting. The double-axe on the shaggoth is splendid.
@ Bluesabre: I like it.
@ Catferret: Too bad the human didn’t shave before being used as a trophy…nice attention to detail although – did you skip a tooth on the troll?
@ Dakkapantz: well executed. Tons of good mini-photography tutorials out there. I’ve been reading them for my own sake.
@ Lt Dougheim: Great banner. I must admit I’ve really enjoyed seeing your Halfling army developed. Inspiring – just too bad that Halflings are a little hard to find and then expensive when you do find them.
@ Calibretto: Well done. Very effective work on the old models. The squid banner does beg explanation or at least boggy or seashore bases.
@ Totengraber: I like the pale look you’ve given them. I agree that ogre skin gets a bit boring to paint. Have you tried mixing up the tones on the models, gives a more varied look and keeps the painting a lttle more interesting.
@ Lord Obsidianus: Very dark elvish. The Gold on blue works very well..
@ Matrim_Cauthon: Ouch!! Will miss seeing your empire army grow..

@ BeatTheBeat: Great mixed model and minor additions/conversions. Makes for a very nice looking group.
@ Avian: Amazing cannon! Clearly tons of work but it came off well
@ Fabius Bile: The unit looks great and the horses work very well, except forthe long leggings on the left horse don’t seem too natural.
PAGE 3
@ saltpappa: The bright color are great on the old models.
PAGE 4
@inquisitor Pariah: Great painting. Very fetching boots on the witch elves. The gold helmet’s stand out a little more than it seems they should
@Joseph Vintila: Very nice unit. With shields they’ll carry their weight on the board.
@DOI: I echo all the positive comments on the blood work, and the extra large paunch is splendid. Imagine what could be stored in the belly – button. Perhaps a large truffle for seasoning – or a few witch elf fingers for garnish.
@Shazarn: Slayers huh? That will be a lot of fun!!

Thanks for the replies everyone, ive been happy with my first two attempts at freehanding banners. As far as the Kraken goes i completely forgot it was a dark elf symbol when i decided on it. I was trying to think of fearsome sea creatures since the army is Stirland River Patrol (I know, river not sea, but not many fierce river creatures) and the Kraken seemed a good one. Too much work involved to change it now = ).

Sorry for the delay, but you know New Year, school, lazyness etc.

UNIT: 13 kislev kossars + boyar with light armour and bow

BACKGROUND/THEME:Not so long ago a son of a local nobleman was fascinated with war and military. With the financial support of his aristocratic family, the young noble began to gather the finest warriors from all across the Empire and far beyond. Unfortunately the spoiled child has no military experienced due to extensive education thus the greatest warriors gain weight and their only opponent is the fearsome rust.

BUILD/CONVERSION: The boyar is made from a brettonian MaA, the axe top comes from oop metal chaos knight. Beard, fur and cap are made from green stuff.

PAINTING: I'm to lazy to write. If you really want to know ask me in my painting log or send me a PM

BASING: New flock. Same painting though.

THIS MONTHS PAINTING: The ghoul horde (89 to be exact)

BUILD/CONVERSION: A mixture of GWs plastic ghouls, metal 90s and 80s ghouls. Also present are many of Heresy's excellent ghoul miniatures. Some of them are converted with some of GWs plastic kits for variety.

PAINTING: Basic 'battle ready' paint job at the moment. Simply base coated and washed. One or two have had details and highlights started. Obviously there is alot more work to be done on them.

BASING: Basic sand and drybrush. Most still need attention on their bases.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Too many to paint! Will still be working on them in the coming months but for the purpose of the monthly challenge they are finished. At least there are blocks of colour on the battlefield now rather than cubes of darkness.

POINTS: 712

TOTAL POINTS: 1142

Doi - I like the bases - where did you get the long grass from?

I bought a sheet of ground cover from a company called MiniNatur which I just cut down to size to fit the bases. It looks like this (http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x4/WaaaghDoi/TOFP235.jpg).

@DOI: I echo all the positive comments on the blood work, and the extra large paunch is splendid. Imagine what could be stored in the belly Ė button. Perhaps a large truffle for seasoning Ė or a few witch elf fingers for garnish.

I'm much more of a powdered Halfling Skull person myself when it comes to seasoning. The Butcher however finds belly button lint to add a real kick to his cooking :p.

Some more comments:

@ gsmc: Nice work. As you say, the base does really add something to the model. In fact, bases can often be what make or break a model.

@ Nefelenwen: Great work once again. I think it could have done with more of the blue/green colour though. That is your attention grabbing colour and your special character (which would be an attention grabber) seems to overlooked when you look at the group shot as it is a lot darker in comparison. I'm not sure where to work it into the model though, the scarab on the front maybe?

@ Krzyek: Very nice work. The freehand work on the Boyar's robe is particularly impressive, as is the water level in the wine bottle.

@ kingreidos: Great stuff. That is one impressive ghoul horde. Looking forward to the Ghoul King

My apologies for not commenting last month and being a bit late this month (I should really get used to commenting on entries as they trickle in, instead of trying to comment on everything in one sitting), but here goes:

@Ego Ninja: Very nice Daemonettes, the models keep groing on me. I love your Steam Tank, although Iím surprised it looks so small next to the other models.

@doc_cthulu: Great banner for the clanrats and my compliments on the OSL.

@derv: Fantastic job as usual. I think I have some of those models lying around somewhere as well. Your take on them makes me want to dig them out and start painting.

@Braad: Already mentioned on your thread that I love the banner. Is that statue on the orcís base from the chapel set? Thatís a good idea, I think I have some of those left over and now I have a use for them.

@Dark Apostle: Once again your painting strikes me with envy. Nice iconoclastic touch.

@C-Coen: Looking forward to seeing some paint on that dino.

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: I like the chipped wood effect on the standard and spears.

@Malorian: Thatís one impressive, if vertically challenged, army.

@someone2040: My compliments on the horses, they look great. Iím currently having a bit of trouble painting horses. Nice kitbashing for the crossbowmen.

@arobe: Now thatís a lot of stuff, putting the horde back in undead horde. Undead climbing around on tree stumps is a bit unusual.

@Dino: Replacing the picks improves the miners a lot, Iíll have to remember that.

@Schmacker: For a first try at layering thatís absolutely fantastic.

@smokemeakipper: I recognize the troll from the Skull Pass box and a river troll, but not the others. Where are those from? Loving the signpost on the Snotling base.

@8bitMummies: That Bray Shaman is my favourite model from the Beastmen range. Nicely done. How do you achieve the rust effect on the weapons? The Shaggothís axe is fantastic.

@Bluesabre: Indeed supreme. The green on the Cold One looks great.

@Catferret: Perfect use of coffee stirrers. I tend to Ďcommandeerí those every chance I get. The wolvesí fur is very nice.

@Dakkapantz: Regrettably the only thing thatís clear here is that the picture doesnít do your crossbowmen justice. I love the composition of the army shot with the Halfling in front of the rest.

@Lt Dougheim: Fantastic conversion on the BSB. The ogres have so much characterÖIím loving your army more and more.

@Calibretto: Stunning freehand on the banner.

@Totengraber: The weapons are especially nice, as are the gutplates.

@Lord Obsidianus: A bit hard out of focus, so itís hard to make out details to comment on. Nice bases.

@BeatTheBeat: Interesting mix of slaves you have there. Thatís a bit from the Empire Wizards set on your Warplock Engineer, is it not? Thatís a fantastic idea.

@Avian: That thing is absolutely incredible, truly unique and nightmare-inducing. I bow to you, sir.

@Fabius Bile: Nice horsies, I like the details on them.

@saltpappa: The old minis are very characterful and your painting style suits them wonderfully (Iím a fan of bright colours myself).

@Inquisitor Pariah: I donít think thereís too much blue on the Corsairs.

@Joseph Vintila: Good job on getting them done.

@Doi: That butcher actually makes me sick, so you seem to have done something right there. The conversion is absolutely seamless. Iíll have to dig out and note down that recipe for blood.

@Shazarn: Welcome to the Tale.

@gsmc: I applaud you for the courage to try NMM.

@Nefelenwen: Lovely bandages!

@Kryzek: Fantastic conversion for your Boyar, fantastic design on his frock, and I like how you can see how much wine he has left.

@kingreidos: Impressive number of Ghouls, thatís for sure. Once again Iím tempted to get some of the Heresy Ghouls myself, they are simply fantastic.

Replies to the comments kindly left for me:

EmperorNorton: Needs to be cleaned up a bit but it's nice to see some rare character models.
It has been cleaned up in the meantime. Thanks for pointing it out, Iíd have missed it otherwise.

EmperorNorton: Both models are nicely done. Looking forward to seeing these guys based up.
Thanks. I hope basing the models will improve their looks considerably, but I still havenít done my test bases for snow.

EmperorNorton - I know the no motivation thing. Really like Boris, think the horse looks great. The Wolf Priest looks pretty nifty too.
Thank you. I still have trouble with motivation. I was okay the first two weeks of January, but since then I havenít picked up a brush at all, which means now Iím pressed for time again.

EmperorNorton: Have you thougt about some blue or black edging on the barding? It would be a simple way to liven it up.
I have tried blue edging now. It helps, but Iím not sure if itís enough.

@EmperorNorton: Solid paintjob, but as you say, something is needed on the horse's armour Ė maybe just add some blue (like on the knights panther in the Empire Army book) would go a long way if you don't want to spend too much time on it? Warrior priest looks fine.

Iíve tried that and it is a quick and easy way to add a little something, and it also gives me a chance to mark different companies of knights.

EmperorNorton: Nice Middenheimers! The blue looks great, and the priest's beard is really good.
Thank you.

@ EmperorNorton (Middenland): Stop the presses! EmperorNorton is actually happy with his own work :p. He is really well done, the face and beard in particular.
Yeah, that happens now occasionally. Iím a bit scared myselfÖ

EmperorNorton: Great looking mounted EC and WP!
Thank you.

EmperorNorton: Karl Franz looks nice. I agree that the horse's armor needs something to break it up a bit, but I am unsure what to suggest; I'm too used to rusting/goring everything up by default. :D The warrior priest came out great.
Usually I prefer my armies to be clean and proper when they go off to war, but maybe Iíll try rust and gore in the next Tale.

@ EmperorNorton: High standard work as usual. Iíve always liked that particular Ulric model but wish theyíld given him something more interesting to carry than the book
Thank you. I canít think of anything more interesting than a book, though.

Once again I find myself in a bit of a slump, but there's still hope I'll have something to present in a week's time.

@Braad: Already mentioned on your thread that I love the banner. Is that statue on the orcís base from the chapel set? Thatís a good idea, I think I have some of those left over and now I have a use for them.

Thanks again, then!
Indeed it is. I'm really using nearly all the bits and pieces from the fortified manor set. It's so much cool stuff in there!

@ Doi - my internet's having some problems at the moment so I'll have to check out that link when its more stable!

@ Mods - Could I add 100 points of Wood Elves a month to the tale? I've just dug some out and have thought of a paint-scheme that would be quick (and not green!). I'd hope to chuck in another 300 points on top of that before the end for a total of 1000 points.

Well I don't think you can top a physical reaction like that when it comes to complimenting a model :p. Thanks.

Yeah, that happens now occasionally. Iím a bit scared myselfÖ

Well the only way to overcome your fear is to face it again and again!

@ Inquisitor Pariah: You shouldn't have any trouble joining in with those Wood Elves. The colour scheme looks quite good, but I think you'd need another highlight on the skin to make it stand out a bit more. It is a bit too brown at the moment so it blends in with all of the cloth.

Mods? AFAIK there are hardly any moderators involved in the tale. Maybe a few painting an army though...
Anyway, sure, join with as much as you like and think you can manage :)

1st Post in the ToFP

Hello all. Been very slow in finding this and it would have helped as I've been painting up my Empire horde. So without further ado I'd lke to join in this to continue my Empire army to help me get the thing finished (so I can start BoC for the next ToFP ;))

ARMY: Empire
UNIT: 10 crossbowmen & 10 Knights w/Full command
POINTS: 80 + 270 =350
TOTAL POINTS: 350 (though more if I could include all my other painting ;))
DICE-ROLL: 5

Malorian: Lovely looking dwarves. Are these the ones we read about as he searched for his axe.
Dino: I love your minres' little helmet candles and the fat dragon Ogres.
Bluesabre: The base looks realy nice. Could you give me some more details about how you did it as I've been struggling making nice bases (as can be seen from above).
Joseph Vintala: Like the blue on the marauders. Nice and bright and contrasts well with the other hues/person colours.
Shazard: Love that axe. how did you te those bloodstains on it?

In general; I've bought some sand, some static grass and the warhammer basing kit but would love some advice on how to base things more nicely than green and flock as its not the best :cries:

Old trick of mine that probably very well known :( hehe
Blood Red reduced tot he point of dry brushing, I put a dash on followed by dabbing it with my finger. Thanks for noticing!
I must say, I think empire are boring as bat scat but a well painted army, like yours, comes together really nicely! Well Done!

@Inquisitor Pariah: I love that colour scheme, what is it by the way? and as pointed out before, a little bit of highlighting on the skin wouldn't go to harm. I suggest Bronze Flesh as im looking at it right now and it seems like it would work.

@Krzyek. Great to see some Kisliv around! They look just amazing and the Banner is superb! Are they the original model or conversions? I can't remember, been too long. And If they are the originals, where are you picking them up from

kingreidos@ Insane but awesome looking. Those are some great models. Pity their not more important in the army right? hehe

@Nefelenwen Love her! Especially the shadows on the cloak and staff head!

Hmmm, well, I guess it wouldn't be a problem to throw in the stuff you painted since september 2009, as you would have probably done so anyway if you found us earlier. As long as we get some nice pics to look at, and it motivates you to paint stuff, it will be all fine!

If you got stuff from the earlier months of this tale, just show them at the start of the next thread (up around the 1st of february).

They are original. I bought them when they were new (few years ago). I just didn't had the opportunity to paint them.

Hey I am having trouble with getting a good camera, and between wrestling school and work I havent been able to have my dad show me the ropes with his camera. I have about 350 points of DE painted and I'll post 400 at least in February to buy back this month. P.S. Do I also have to buy back the months in which I wasn't a Warseer member? Just curious. Thanks guys, and great work!

@ Doi - Have highlighted the skin now - looks much better!

@ Shazarn - Its Foundation Mecharite Red, Cathayn Brown and Denyb(?) Stone with a red/brown wash over it. I'm thinking of including a lighter colour too (and edging the bases in green not brown)

Dark Elves: I've gone over the green areas of my previously painted models with the new green wash to take the shine off..they looked a bit silly with shiny robes before!

Wood Elves: I've chopped up a Wood Elf noble so he can carry the battle-standard and ride an eagle...the tree he was standing on got clipped off and flowing robes sculpted on:

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p263/RTFH/Wood%20Elves/sdfsdfsdf009.jpg

I also converted up some Treekin out of old metal Dyrads and a smorgasbord of Treeman part and putty (I love that word). I'm using pro create and rubber clay shapers now - hasn't improved my sculpting but it has speeded it up no end! (the last guy isn't a scratch build...just undercoated)

ARMY : Empire - Talabheim (2000 Points)

UNITS: 16 Handgunners, 16 Halberdiers & 1 Battle Wizard

BACKGROUND/THEME: The members of the Taalbaston Guard are charged with the security and defence of the crater wall that surrounds Talabheim. In times of war detachments will march from the city in support of levied free companies, providing them with training on route and used to hold strategically vital positions during conflict.

Dieter Feuerhand is an irascible magister from Altdorf, happy to sell his services for the coin of the realm. Never the most scholarly of wizards, his ready temper and lack of restraint when exercising his abilities makes him an easy choice for generals looking to provide their forces with magical support.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Old handgunners and spearmen with new halberd blades added, and a wizard from the new boxed set.

PAINTING: Red. And white. And more red. Gotta love babab black and baal red. I hope stocks don't run low with the forthcoming Blood Angels...

STILL TO DO: Static grass.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Wow, I think my painting is getting a bit better! No lows to speak of, other than the tardiness of getting this posted.

No, not necessarily. However, if you finish with 2000 points or more, there will be some sort of 'hall of fame' mention for you. I still gotta figure out how I'm gonna do that though, bit in my sig there is some sort of the same thing for last year, though I'm thinking about something including pics for this year.

But in the end, it's all about at least getting some stuff painted, so it's no problem to lag behind a bit.

Do note, if you're a men's painter, but finish with less then 2000, you still can feature in the boys hall of fame if you reach at least 1000 points.

@ Morglum
Just wondering, if you got troubles keeping up, you can also put your stuff together in one army (since it's all O&G anyway...). Don't give up too easily! Would hate to lose your entry here!

Hmmmm, would it be acceptable to use the ironguts I just painted up for my son since I used some empire colors and will also employ them as dogs of war for my Empire army?

Also comments for postings since I last commented:

@nefelenwen: I really like the effect, you’ve captured the windswept mummy look.
@KRZYEK: Nice painting, especially the freehand on the banner. Its too bad they sculpted the fur on those models to make it so difficult to keep them from looking clumpy
@kingreidos: that’s a lot of ghouls! Should be a fun themed army to play!
@Kholbourn: Hooray Empire! I’m also just finding that a little more work on the bases adds a lot to the model.
@Harvey: Also Hooray Empire! Feuerhand is splendidly flamey.

I don't see why not. If you got that rare choice left, it's a perfectly valid choice for the empire.

Well, okay, DOW rules are a bit debatable right now, but I still use them :D And I believe there are others in the tale who also field them as DOW.

gsmc
31-01-2010, 15:02
Excellent. I've often added them - especially to larger lists - for the fear and the punch that most empire troops are lacking. Besides they have helped me procrastinate from painting the block of 25 halberds sitting beside them.

Regarding your comment:

DOW rules are a bit debatable right now

The list of rules that don't get debated is probably considerably shorter than the list of those that do

Well, here's my submission for month 5 (as I post this it's early morning of February 1st here, but I reckon it's still January 31st somewhere in the world, so please allow it :))

Sorry it's so late again. I really wanted to post earlier on in the month - I feel like I'm missing out on all the commenting and fun. I'm looking at everyone's posts and loving what people are coming up with. This one's so late in the month that I doubt anyone's gonna read this, so I'll leave comments next month.

Anyway, here's my dark elf sorceress and 10 x crossbowmen. The purple/green flip paint effect is beginning to look cool now, I think. You can see the effect best on the sorceress. I remodelled the sorcoress's right leg bacause I didn't like her ankle boot, and the crossbowmen needed a bit of chopping to get the shields sitting nicely, but otherwise pretty straightforward.

I'm going to come back to the bases at the end of the project and do them properly.

Points for this month = 295
Points total for my army so far = 505
