I don't play Deathwing, or Dark Angels or own their codex so forgive me if it's in there, but have a large Blood Angels Army and from time to time I'd love to field a selection of my 1st company. This would be supported by the usual tactical and assault squads, but from time to time I'd love to use a commander and command group in terminator armour (standard bearer and apothecary basically) but is this even possible in any army list?

I don't think it'd be too overpowered, as it's only really a minor upgrade to what is already a veteran unit, but it'd suit the fluff better. After all the 1st company does have a captain, chaplain, apothecary and standard bearer in it!

What are your thoughts? Use a normal Terminator squad with the items modelled and ignore them rules wise or not?

Space Wolves. You have the Rune Priests and other HQs you can put in TDA, you can have 4 HQ, and Wolf Guard is TDA.

You can do it in Dark Angels too.

Edit: And sorry, but every time I see your name, I think Wilson Phillips. :) (who were an all female singing group in the 80s, in case you're young)

Thanks... maybe I'll have to have a look at them. I didn't want to buy the DA codex cos it's due for replacement and I would rather wait. Similar reason for Space Wolves, but at least that codex has plenty of fluff like all new books.

I do think it's odd that a codex chapter and BA can have 30 terminators (3 units of 10 in case anyone is feling slow today) and a terminator captain, but the honour guard / command group would end up in power armour!

@ Massey, I wouldn't say I was young as such, being 26, but I don't really know them, even though the name rings a bell somewhere. Massey makes me think of the Budweiser adverts for some reason... There we have it, how odd!?

Yeah, they sing like uplifting chick music, so I wouldn't worry about it. Not exactly something the average 40K gamer would be familiar with. :D And beer commercials rock!

Yeah, I'd wouldn't buy the DA book just for the Termie command squad. It won't make up for the overall weakness of the book.

While the SW army is nice, only the DA can run a true terminator command squad with apothecary and standard bearer. Unfortunately, the rest of the DA codex is rather lacking in creativity.

You've caused Hold On to be stuck in my head as I prepare to go to bed. Thanks for that.

You could always proxy them as an Honour guard unit, it gives you the cool banner and a 'company champion'

They have a 2+ save and bolters (so that covers the terminator part a bit). you can give 1 a thunderhammer and some a relic blade.

Anyhow...play dark angels if you want the full package and field terminators and a terminator command squad. (Edit:and able to include tactical squads)

My brother owns a Dark Angels army so that is not an option (although I've painted half the damn thing, lol).

I may well do the proxy thing, or just have the models made up for my collection even if they don't get used. I can always use the extra models as spare heavy weapons to sway out etc... I have Omnio from Space Hulk to use as a Tech Adept too!

I'm glad I'm not missing something somewhere along the lines though.

Thanks guys.

Yes but Wolf Guard don't really have options for a command group. You can't get apothecaries and standard bearers in TDA. In fact, Space Wolves just can't get the command group period. You can have grey hunter wolf standard bearers, but these are quite a bit different than vanilla Marines standards.

Black Templars still have a Terminator Command Squad entry, but no specialists like termi banners or apoths.

Terminator command squads only ever even got 'real' options for 'command groups' with the dark angels book.
Under the old marine codex, you could pay serious amounts of points, and use your traits, to make a unit of 4 in terminator armor, but it was really, really, really expensive, and not worth it.

You could have done it in 2nd., but that's neither here nor there.

I actually wish they covered this is the base SM codex, in a similar way to the other HQ choices - "A command squad may replace it's <<Power Armour + standard equipment>> for Terminator Armour, Storm Bolter and Power Weapon for Xpts"

Maybe I'm just being too simplistic, and there's something I've missed. Can't see what the problem is unless it makes the cost for a Command Squad too much.

But yes, at the moment it's DA only for Command Terminators, and even this is a psuedo-command squad anyway.

The 3rd edition book said that the equipment normally found in command squads just wasn't compatible with terminator armor, and only dark angels actually had it, but it was really expensive.
Then in 4th, you could use traits to make the specialists, but it was now even more expensive.
