View Full Version : Flurry of Paint - Tale of three gamers, a bet, and a pink sparkley shirt

Well, after what seems like forever, finally getting a painting log up and running.

Setting up this log for Id'git Thwompa (Nids), ce13 (Orks), and myself (Guard)

Our plan, is to use this painting log as a way to boost our own productivity for our current 40k lists. to that effect, we added a twist to this entire process. In sept. there is a tourney up here in Ontario which we will be aiming to go to. The person who does not get their army completed for the tourney, will have to wear a incredibly poorly designed shirt (read, bright pink with sparkles and a tiara or some such thing) for the tourney. On top of this horrible punishment, the person who finish's their list last, has to buy the first round of drinks on the first night :D. This helps put a damper on the "2 days before tourney mad dash to get things done"

This is just the starter post here, Going to have some pictures up tonight, and on a regular basis after that. 7 months for a 1750 ish (dont have the tourney point limit yet) I think we will be in good order :D

So I guess I'll be the first post with an update. Started yesterday with my first unit of boyz , 11 of them with a PK Nob in a Trukk. Got a good bunch of the foundation paint done and started the first flesh highlight. I'll post the pics later tonight.

Wish me luck guys, I'm not known as one that finishes a project on time. The last one I did ended up being completed in the hotel room the night before the tourney started, Id'git's still a little cheesed over that one :) I'll keep everyone updated.

Well, its about that time. Going to throw up a couple of WIP shots to kick things off, hopefully tomorrow the other guys will do the same.

PIP of my Plasma Gunner, kind of my test model

The Sgt. for the unit also PIP

Plasma Gunner pretty close to being done.. Need some touch up's and a bit of ink on the base to darken the shale..

I am the first to admit, my painting skill leave much to be desired, but this is still a work in progress so hopefully I get the hang of this lol

So here's the first couple day work. Nothing too fancy yet, but I'm working my way up.

First Foundation of Flesh

Starting to highlight up, working way too slow

Doing a bunch more painting tonight, hope to have the flesh done on all of them, who knows, it might even happen too :)

I guess i should actually pry myself from my model long enough to prove i am spending my time glued to my model lol. Where as the other two will have the most difficulty focusing on putting in the time painting....... my difficulty will come from not spending too much time "nit-picking" over each model. I have a tendency to make projects difficult for myself (prime example is the skull and crossbones I painted on the eye patch of Long Drong from fantasy...only took an hour and a half lol)

So the Nid army I have decided to tackle will have a fairly simple colour pallet. Orange bodies with black/dark grey plates. But because I am truly incapable of making things easy on myself I have decided to add dead/damaged Salamanders Marines on most of my bases. The green will offset the orange/black nids ... and give me something more creative to play with.

The first example of which can be seen below. I have decided to start with my Hive Tyrant , and for his base... a serial crushed Dreadnought !

Ok enough jibber jabber on to the Pics................

This is really a fairly basic conversion, I removed the back half of the Dreadnought from the Assault on Black Reach and arranged the top half on the base. I originally wanted to keep the melta gun arm on instead of the combat arm, but it didn't look as natural. I then used the one foot under it's leg to give the image of it driven to the ground, using slate rock to increase this effect.

The last touch was to strip some wires I had laying around ... I then drilled holes in the arm and bent the wires into place through the holes, coating them in a bit of glue so they would harden into place. The leg was easier as it was already hollow.

A few coats of paint and my Tyrant has a base worthy of the leader of my Hive Fleet.

Time for a quick update. The hive tyrant will be finished by tomorrow night. Unfortunately the gold medal hockey game was a touch too distracting. This puts me a day behind my "one unit a week" goal ... but it is a center piece and the leader of my forces so i guess he can have an extra day worth of my attention.

Pics of him in all his glory tomorrow come hell or high water lol.

Here' where I am so far, just one more picture but a couple more steps are on being done.

The plan is to have the blue skulls as my clan, what can I say I really like lootas :), but need to differentiate my four units of boyz. So I'm doing helmets and shoulder pads in either yellow, red, orange or purple depending on the squad. I'll have their transports match the squads as well.

Well back to the paint brush.

As promised here are the pictures of my Hive Tyrant. It is rather difficult to get a decent pic of the orange highlights. But you more or less get the idea.

I need to find a way to highlight the black that i am happy with but he is about 90% done.

Awesome job there. Too bad the pic doesn't show the orange quite right, but still looking good Id'git.

ugh falling behind sucks, and now i have 3 design projects for clients this week. In any case hopefully I can hop back on track and get the two tyrant guard and 3 hive guard finished in about a week, week and a half

his pose is spot on.. he just lurks over his fallen enemy to spot another prey to feel the wrath of his venom canon!

muahaha awesome ;)

lol thanks man. It was a bit tricky trying to find the right dynamic pose without having him too heavy on one side. As it is I love the fact he is looking past things right in front of him assured that the tyrant guard will do what they were designed for, allowing him to seek out larger targets to fire at.

hey, didn't wanna have a look at your thread without leaving a comment! I think your work is really good! I especially like the contrast of the orange on the tyrant, and the green on the dreadnought!! Keep up the good work!! :D

Thanks man. Your work is very impressive as well. I am glad that the contrast worked as well as it did, i specifically wanted the black plates and the dark grey rocks to be close to the same, that way it looks like the Nids adapted to blend in with their surroundings. I knew doing that however would make the whole army look very monochromatic. The decision to use the dead salamanders came mostly from having a bunch of marine models laying around i doubt i will ever get around to painting :)

12-03-2010, 11:28
Yeah it works really well :D I love the black against the orange, I haven't seen a paint scheme on nids that has such a good contrast. I've seen a lot of blues against grey/black or blue and purple but I really like how you have done something different! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Looking good guys, always nice to see a group of friends challenging each other to improve, look forward to updates.

The Hive Mind is a cruel mistress........

Although I have been itching to get some painting done a half dozen freelance clients popped out of nowhere and I am swamped. My only saving grace is the other two have been pretty lazy/unmotivated lately......

...Prove me wrong boys lets see some WIP photos !!!

Hey guys,

Everything's looking great, I love the dreadnaught base - very dynamic and a nice contrasting colour to the tyrant.

I agree some more WIP pics are needed!!!
