Not sure how to embed an image, so I'll just give you the link:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_56C-ixCTGN4/Su6-a_Um7aI/AAAAAAAACnE/GCDkf9xwiyU/s400/NID-Genestealer.jpg

This image of the genestealer used to really freak me out when I was much younger, and seeing it in the previous edition of Space Hulk triggered a lifelong love of the sinister monsters.

Also this one on the back of a t-shirt circa about 1992 was a major factor in drawing me into the hobby. Back when Furioso was a warrior's name, not a designation.

http://www.freewebs.com/the_omnissiah/Blood%20angels%20dreadnought.jpg

I wore that t-shirt everywhere, I thought it looked so cool.

I have an old White Dwarf which featured this piece as a double page spread!
I know it's a dated pic but I love it.

Notice how the Emperor has a more aggressive pose (not to mention Terminator armour), he looks like he's about to really let rip while Horus is obviously over confident.

Most of the stuff by Mark Gibbons I find wonderful. I suppose its because I got into the hobby during 2nd ed and Gibbons/Blanche sum up 2nd ed 40k for me.

I especially love his Blood Axe warboss - the one in the greatcoat and commissar style hat with cigar in hand, his arrogant little Gretchin adjutant next to him with monocle, pickelhaube and swagger stick. Awesome ^_^. If I had any ability with greenstuff I'd try to make a conversion based on that (the current kommando nob is in just the right pose, cigar and all).

I actually have all the others saved to my hard drive. I have about 400 sisters of battle pictures ranging from quick sketches and webcomics to full blown paintings and GC renderings. However this thread is about favorites not a "post everything". If you are interested I highly recommend browsing a few pages of the "popular" results on deviant art.

that goes for more than just sisters too. You can find a lot of material of any race.

Banned? Huh?

I'm partial to some of the character pics in the 1st edition Space Marine rulebook, especially the pen-and-ink picture of Rogal Dorn stood in battered power armour with his arms folded. That was before the Space Marine characters became overburdened with bling - Dorn's armour was pretty much factory-standard.

The drawing of Leman Russ that also appeared in the Space Marine rulebook, as well as in the Warhammer 40,000 Compilation is also a favourite - just him standing there with Freki and Geri straining at the leash, with a battle raging in the background. Much better than the mal-proportioned crap that seems to pass for Space Marine art these days.

And finally the art in the 1st edition Space Hulk rulebooks, with Blood Angels and Deathwing terminators exploring space hulks, with Genestealers stalking them from the ceilings, or lurking in vents or under the floors, waiting to strike. Brilliant, atmospheric stuff.

I am not sure if this is the one you are talking about, but it certainly fits the description. http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1530120_Eternity_Gate_LARGE_IMAGE It is titled The Eternity Gate on page 2 of the 4thEd rulebook.

I cannot decide if I love or hate John Blanche's work. I love the concepts presented, but with his complete lack of perspective, proportion, and anatomy (basically the first things taught to artists), I cannot wholly condone his work. The new IG codex cover is particularly bad in this respect.

I've got too many great ones to post so here are four of my favorites. I have a higher resolution of the Warboss Lincoln somewhere that I printed up to place on my Orks' carry case. The Dance Steps for Space Hulk is actually quite fun to play if anyone has Dragon Magazine #204. I really like the tea party as there fluff to support it, kind of. John Blanche is more of an 'artist' in the sense that he isn't trying to produce a literal illustration of a picture.

The Imperial Guard codex cover was done by Dave Gallagher not John Blanche. The last codex cover he ever did was the 2nd ed Sisters of Battle codex.

my favourite, and what got me into 40k, is the art found in the daemonhunters codex.

in particular things like this: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1031559_dh_art1.jpg

there is something wonderful about black and white drawings and their ability to convey the near-insanity that the 40k universe is meant to be all about.

There has been a lot of good art over the years, but my current favorite is also a somewhat new pic.

The cover of the new SW codex.

My absolute all time favourite is the Bloodthrister that Mark did in the 2nd edition codex Chaos, the one where it's leaping off the top of a mountain of skulls and looks like it is coming right at you. Filled me with an understanding of its power, and back in 2nd edition it was indeed powerful. (So was Kharn and Abaddon).

You can still buy prints of his early GW pics here as he left before 2000 and still owns all his work:

http://www.redknuckle.com/

Click on the sales tab and you can preview some of the old classics, the Thirster one isn't among them though. 2nd Edition Codex Chaos, it was worth the money just for the art work inside it. (still my fav codex ever)

I rememberew why I like these two so much; they show the World Eaters as things of menace - bloody killers, but controlled violence. A far cry from the cartoon warriors that the World Eaters have become in the 3rd edition Codex and since.

That is my favorite as well.

There is a pic in some old rulebook or codex (2nd edition or older) of a lone space marine that is literally standing in a swirling wortex of pure madness ... but he stands firm with his bolter in hand ready to fight whatever is comming out!

Sanguinius, guarding the gates of Terra.

edit: Looks like gobbo got to it before me, but didn't know what he had.

I really wish this picture had made it into the codex. Colourophobic is a genius.

The high resolution photo is astoundingly detailed. Let me go get an upload of it.

edit2: There we go. I think that's 80% res of the original.

^Pretty good. It reminds me of the motivational with the Emperors head replaced with a crow, and under it it says "SANITY, In the beginning GW said, Sanity? Fu(& Sanity! And it was good."

BTW, who is Gus?

This has always been my favourite ever since I started playing, its from the cover of the 2nd Edition Wargear book and a couple of other places I believe. Great colours, great composition and it made me fall in love with Blood Angels, especially the Chaplain.
I've used it as my avatar since I joined Warseer and for about two years beforehand on Warhammer Realm.

I love that painting. It's was the cover to the very first WD I bought for myself (135 I believe). Still gives me a warm fuzzy feeling...

Here is some rather odd artwork. Not my favorites, but I guess some people might enjoy it ;)

Space marine on tracks?

I take it that these folks had something to do with the creation of 40k... possibly

Space marines as local law enforcers?

Because jump packs really need to be huge

We all knew that space elves were silly, but this... space pixies!

for the top one, it looks like it may be a Ad mech unit.
It's incredibly similar to the Praetorian Skittari people on here have built.
the axe looks admech too.
it's an old pic though. possibly predates the admech itself

They're all from the original Rogue Trader book - in the days before Marines were 8ft tall uber-heroes of legend, dripping with skulls and bling, capable of killing an entire army by themselves!1!.

*sigh*

Good times.

And the second and third links are indeed caricatures of the original RT 40k team.

There is one I really like that I can't find - It shows 2 Legion of the Damned marines, one of which is holding a wounded Blood Angel's shoulderpad. It was just really cool.

I like the Warhound one that was posted around twice, he is just totally ignoring all the enemy fire :D

The full version of the clasic 40k 2nd ed box set, it started me off on 40k all those years ago.

I love all the colour prints in that book.

Rogue Trader Commissars being awesome: http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w11/theGrandAdmiralThrawn/?action=view&current=RogueTraderCommissars.jpg&newest=1

Pretty much anything Ian Miller.

Also this picture: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/1/1b/Dark_Angels_black.jpg

And of course the original Rogue Trader cover. :)

I have always been facinated by John Blanche's work. He has done a lot to define the feel of 40k, even if much of the modern artwork has moved away from his gothic-punk aestetic and ruddy pallet. Yes some of his art is fetishy. However, its a game invovling intergalactic genocides and ultra violence occationally caused by space fungus, so i dont really see the point in bitching about it. Heres one of his color works. I think the picture expresses something of the alien madness of 40k

Here is another odd picture, this one is from WD 109, where they introduced an IG army list. Take a look at whats on the backs of these guardsmen:
http://yfrog.com/0bjumppackguardsmenj
It should be pointed out that at this time, there was some confusion related to the back packs that space marines use. Some people believed that they were jump packs, because of where the vents were located, and their angle. I'm sure that this picture did not help with clearing up the confusion.
