Harry asked me to do the honors for this month, as he is a bit short on time at the moment. Since it is already the 1st of april at least in about a quarter of our planet: here goes! Get postin' people!

----

The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2009-2010

Month 8

It's all down hill from here.

All the best,
Harry

This is the thread on which you post your work for month EIGHT. (The work you have done in the month of MARCH).

Please make only one post (for each army) in the first week.

Your post should include:

1) The description and points of the unit. AND YOUR TOTAL POINTS SO FAR.
2) Any additional information you care to share with us about your painting.
3) A Dice roll. (Explained below)
4) Up to six photographs of your months work and the army so far.

The dice role.

With over 250 painters in this years Fantasy tale it would be impossible to try to comment on everyones work. (Although there are some who will try!) We considered splitting into army factions which would have left every one only posting on others painting the same army. Someone came up with the great idea of dicing for it. So you throw a dice and record the score. You then try and post comment on everyone who has the same dice roll as you. In return you can expect comment form all of them. This way each month we will all be commenting on a random selection of other painters work.
(Note: this does not stop anyone posting anything they like about anyones work regardless of the numbers rolled!)

A Word on using photographs

You can use up to six photographs (the maximum allowed in a post by warseer). To show us your months painting and the 'army' so far. The best size for showing your work is 640x480 (It can be smaller or you can use ‘thumbs’ which link to bigger pictures but they must not be bigger or it takes too long for the pages to load). The best thing to do is to resize them, wherever you are hosting your images, and then drag and drop the ‘img code’ directly into the text.

This month (APRIL) WIP Thread.

AFTER THE FIRST WEEK ... This thread will become the 'normal' ... comment and crit’ of others work, Work In Progress (WIP) pictures of your work as it develops, how you are getting on, seeking advice and encouragement for your ideas and your painting and generally chatting about the project, life and the cosmos.

However, please continue to only post your work for the first week. This is to give everyone a chance to post up their finished work before it gets lost amongst a sea of chat and WIP shots.

Thanks again to everyone who has signed up for this madness.

If you have not signed up yet…

If you have not signed up yet and would like to join us you are not to late.
Just post on this thread which army and how many points you intend to paint and then crack on.
Anything you post this month will count for last months painting.
(Although you will have to push on and paint something for next month to catch us up).

If you can not post anything this month …

DO NOT PANIC! … use a joker.
Busy lives calm down again, enthusiasm returns, time presents itself.
When it does 'push hard and 'buy back' your joker by painting extra. If your struggling post and say so. (don't just slip quietly away) You will be amazed by the posts of encouragement and support which come from your fellow painters eager to see you successfully complete this project. Most importantly ... 'Stick with it' ... The prize of getting your stuff painted remains worth all the effort.

What is it all about?

Do you want to paint a 2000 point army in the next 12 months?
Do you want to meet a great bunch, with the same goal who will encourage and support you throughout the process?
Can you do the same in return?
Are you completely bonkers?
Then you have come to the right place!

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2009 and finishing with their last post on the last day of July 2010.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys (and Infants!)

Because this is harder than you would think ... This year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month we have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 2000 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 1000 points/month).
I have also added a list for the 'Infants' or Warmaster painters.

The Painters: (Thanks as always to Braad!)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.
.....TRY AND MAKE IT CLEAR YOU ARE SIGNING IN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR POST SO I DON'T MISS IT!

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. Write much as you like. We love background. write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

I unlock thee, devastating Aqshy! I call down rains of fire! In conflagration, cleanse the tainted, vile and unworthy! Aqshy - purity out of ashes, light in darkness, glowing ember and slumbering flame. Aqshy - furious tempest and consuming rage! Aqshy! I unlock thee! I am the Key of Secrets!

UNIT: Wizard of the Bright Order, (lvl 2 scroll caddy)

BUILD/CONVERSION: Pretty extensive conversion. Body, keys, book and arms from flagellant, cape (not seen in the pic) from high elf, head from GS, flaming sword and collar from empire wizard, feet from empire state tropper, left hand and pouch from empire archer. Belt, book strap and flame pattern on the hem of the robe made of green stuff.

PAINTING: Pretty much the same as previous entries, only favouring the reds. Only "new" colour is the orange, which is blazing orange highlighted by adding bleached bone. The whole wizard is painted using only a GW basecoat brush - shows how far you can take it as long as you keep your brushes in good condition!

STILL TO DO: Not muh, maybe add a rune to te book cover.

HIGHS/LOWS: Hihgs: Managing to create a wizard distinctly different from the standard kit, but still get a strong warhammer-feel to it.
Lows: trying to paint tattoos on the bare arms, failing completely and have to repaint all skin.

Malorian's Painting For March:

Dice roll: 4

Models painted: 18 spear saurus (w/ spears, banner, musician), two units of 10 skinks, 10 skirmishing skinks, 6 chameleon skinks, jungle swarm, 2 razordns (I forgot handlers in fort mac so they won't be in the picture.

Points: 671 (Lets say 175 for Lizardmen 1 and 496 for Lizardmen 2, which buys me back a joker)

Highs: I really like how the razordons turned out and it's nice to have all the skinks done.

Lows: It's tough to paint 10 models and then realize it's only 50 points... and then do it again... And the jungle swarm is kinda lame, but hey, it was cheap.

Next up... Operation Pentasteg!

I really don't know if I can do this... but I need to in order to get rid of all those jokers... so I'm going to try. Honestly I think I'll get only four done.

Greetings everyone - I'm back and so is my painting mojo! After a mid tale lack of motivation, I'm right back on track and ready to buy back one of my jokers.

Army - 2000pts + of Averland Empire

This month's units - Steam Tank (huzzah!) and an Engineer.

Points - 300 + 82 = 382pts

Total Points so far = 1349pts

Dice Roll = 3

Highs - Nice break from painting masses of infantry, the banner was fun as usual, enjoyed painting the tank.

Lows - none this time.

Background/Theme - Master Engineer Ruprecht Von Stahl knew exactly how to deal with Marius Leitdorf and his "inspired" suggestions. He was too long in the tooth to be fazed by yet another aristocratic upstart who fancied his title and position naturally made him an expert in military and scientific matters, so when "Mad" Marius voiced the opinion that Averland's Steam Tank be named "The Pink Elephant", and should be liveried accordingly, Von Stahl replied "As you wish, excellency". Of course, Von Stahl knew full well that it would take several weeks to complete the work, and that Marius would have forgotten the conversation within an hour. Sure enough, when "Der Schwartze Tod" (The Black Death) was unveiled in Averland colours, complete with the freshly embroidered honour banner, Leitdorf cheered as loudly as the crowd.

ARMY: Miraglean Dogs of War

DICE ROLL: Lucky 6.

UNIT: 20 Bearmen of Urslo, 1 Man-Eater with Great Weapons.

CONVERSIONS : Obviously quite a bit on the Bearmen. Beorg is stock standard model. The regular Bearmen are Marauders with some of them having sculpted chainmail as well as everyone getting some bearskin fur. Heads are varios from Horsemen and stock standard Marauders. The standard itself is scratch sculpted over the regular Marauder standard. The shields are also sculpted, using the old Skeleton Shields as a base and sculpting the Bear Print onto each one.

PAINTING: There's not really much special in the paint job. Just basic base coat + wash + same colour as base coat + highlight on most stuff. The Man-eater has a few more layers on him, since he's large so it's needed on the large area's.

STILL TO DO: Need to do up the Axes a little. Also need to add grass to the Bearmen bases.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Highs is I'm done. Also in the end, it was enjoyable to paint the Man-Eater (although he came along slowly) and Beorg Bearstruck. The other high is I won best painted at the tournament, so that was pretty good! Lows are, sick of Norsemen by the end of it. Not a fan of painting large regiments, it just becomes tedious by the end.

POINTS: 425

TOTAL POINTS: 2084

WHAT's NEXT: Well, since I'm done I could stop there. But I've got tournaments coming up that require more points. I am taking a small break (although, in part I already have) to paint some flash Blood Angels. However, I do intend to paint up another 20 dwarves, a Mercenary Cannon, more Duellists and more Halflings before the tale finishes. At some point, I also wish to repaint the Marksmen of Miragliano. I don't think their paint job is bad, but the tournament really ran a number on them with paint and crossbows falling off all around. So expect more from me in coming months!

Another joker from me (just the second one, so it's still legal..)

Got a LotR tourney coming up the 11th of April.. where I really wanted to field a brand new army. So in 3 weeks time I've painted over 30 models already - all as true individuals - with another couple to do (49 total). Besides all that, I should graduate this year and had a couple of exams over the past few days. Got 10 days of almost total freedom now though, in which I not only hope to finish the LotR stuff but also do some Lizards again.

ARMY: Dark Elves

DICE ROLL: 1.

UNIT: 6 Harpies

POINTS: 66

CONVERSIONS : I built the wings out of plastic card and greenstuff...they are held in place with a pin but can be removed for transport...or to hide my shame!

PAINTING: I ended up using dark colours to contrast with the light brown and flesh - I think it came out OK

STILL TO DO: Might need to source some new wings because I really don't like the way they turned out

HIGHS AND LOWS: painting the flesh tones was fun...

ARMY: Hochland Empire

DICE ROLL: 5

UNIT: 5 Knights w/Musician & Warrior Priest w/ Great Weapon, Icon of Magnus & Armour of Meteoric Iron

CONVERSIONS : I replaced the standard knight heads with the Outrider bearded ones. The warrior priest is a mix of parts from the Flagellants, Great Swords & Knights sets

PAINTING: The knights have been painted as Knights Of The Blazing Sun copying the scheme found in the Empire source book...The Warrior Priest is pretty much done using same techniques as previously explained

STILL TO DO: I need to do shields for the knights - does anyone know if there are shields with a Sun Face design on?

HIGHS AND LOWS: I was really pleased with how the Priest turned out...glad that I did not have to paint lots of rank and file this month!

POINTS: 267

TOTAL POINTS: 1,317

WHAT's NEXT: I have bought a box of archers and am going to do them as Huntsman plus maybe a Wizard (is a Light wizard a good choice?)

THIS MONTHS PAINTING:

UNIT: Wurzagg & Black Orc Big Boss

BACKGROUND/THEME: Army by the rules of the ‘7 knights’ scenario.

BUILD/CONVERSION: 2x straight from the blister, except that I added a shield to the Avatars of War model.

STILL TO DO: Done.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I find Metal cavalry always a pain to paint. I need to put them on something that I can hold in the future, made it much more easy on the Warboss I did 2 months ago.

...time for me. I currently work in a different city than I live in so time to paint is seriously limited. I hope that I can still finish this tale but as we're expecting moving into a new appartement during this month because we're having a baby at the beginning of summer I'm having some serious doubt about reaching the finish line.

Hi all, here's my last months work.

ARMY: Dwarfs (2000 Points)

UNIT: 5 Dwarf Longbeards and a Bolt Thrower with Engineer.

BACKGROUND/THEME:

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversions or anything special in here, the Engineer is made up from plastic Thunderer parts. I must say again that I really do love the old 5th and 6th (or maybe even earlier, Iím not sure.) metals, they just have so much character.

PAINTING: Undercoated black. Same flesh and metal that Iíve done with everything so far. Bit of yellow to tie them together although I didnít do any yellow on the Bolt Thrower itself, as I wanted to keep it looking used rather than ornamental, or something like that. Also I put more gold on the Longbeards than the warriors to show their status.

BASING: Gritty sand, painted black. I havenít decided how Iím going to base the army yet. Leaning towards a snowy mountain look at the moment.

STILL TO DO: Just the bases this month.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Just highs this month, I know it must be getting boring reading this, but I do enjoy painting the older Dwarfs, the new ones just donít have the character or detail of the older metals.

POINTS: 280

TOTAL POINTS: 1706

DICE ROLL: 4

Next month another Gyrocopter, or maybe some more Longbeards, not sure how lazy I'm going to be this month.

Even though I'm not a part of this years Tale, I thought I should hop in and give a bit of support to everyone. All of you are doing good, and you are more than over the hill - so keep up the great work! It is always a pleasure to watch this place.

Some of you may remember that I did a special model for Easter last year. Well, oops, I did it again. :D

Have a laugh, enjoy the upcoming spring, and visit me here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4547980#post4547980) for more shots of the furry Easter Ogre (and pictures of last years Zombie Easter Egg Hunt). I hope to join the next Tale, and this buddy is a good hint at what I'm up to.

Braad, can I continue the tale with a new army? I've been working on me boyz:D

Cheers

Peyton

Boyz? Sure. The more green the better. 1000 or 2000 points?

as for empire.. 5 archers and 5 swordsmen.. still have to finish the shields for them.. completely looked over it, but i'm just going to paint them with metallic and a wash..

Got a points value for those empire?

the harsh reality is setting in that i may not finish what i want to this year... i just registered for school and it starts this summer :(

Braad, please let me back in! I'm definitely down, but I'm not quite out. I should have played a joker last month but didn't get round to posting even that (no one told me looking after a baby was going to be so horrendous, I mean, so much fun). Anyway, here's my modest submission for this month.

ARMY: Dark Elves
UNITS: Level 1 Sorceress and Reaper bolt thrower
POINTS: 225
TOTAL POINTS:730 (yeah, I know, it's month#8 already)

BUILD/CONVERSION: I fancied making a different crew for my reaper for variety, so I made these from High Elf, Corsair and Warrior bits. The sorceress is a lovely old model from Talisman. The proportions are bit funny and the face doesn't have much detailing but it's got a lovely composition. I just trimmed her a bit to make her feet and hands less blobby, added a Corsair head-dress and swapped her sword for a Corsair's.
PAINTING: Well, it's all about the colour-changing flip paint, so I've purposely kept everything else black and subdued. The overall effect is pretty interesting and works best on the sorceresses' robes.
HIGHS: Seeing it come together - I'm nearing 1000pts which I never thought I would, and the flip-paint effect works better the bigger the army gets.
LOWS: The army list. I still don't have a finished army list. I've discussed it on the army list forums and I still can't make my mind up what should go in the finished army (too much to choose from). I'm sort of making it up as I go along, which isn't very satisfying. I also wish I'd swapped the sorceress's face for one from another model. Oh well, too late now.
STILL TO DO: I want to touch up the sorceress a bit to add more detailing and make her hair look less grey, but other than that, the basing. I've got some ideas for character basing that I'm playing with and I'll post them in WIP.
DICE ROLL: 4

ARMY: Empire Nordland Army

UNIT: Empire Captain mounted on Pegasus

PAINTING: I mixed some red into my usual yellow/blue scheme. I was a bit afraid that he might look a bit colourful (clown-like), but I guess it worked out ok.

BASING: Well this is by far my most extravagant base till now. I massacred a warhammer quest door for it.

LOWS: I planned on doing 2 more captains/heroes and 10 more regular knights, but I only got as far as the horses.

POINTS: 114 (but I'm still on schedule)

TOTAL POINTS: 1505 + 114 = 1619

ARMY: Dark Elves

UNIT: (Old school) War Hydra

PAINTING: Nice change painting a monster. I started from a Catachan Green basecoat and then used a lot of drybrushing and washing to give it a sufficiently menacing look. I really like how the skin turned out, although it only took an hour or two.

BASING: I beg pardon from all you greenskin lovers but I used a chopped-of Orc head on the base :)

POINTS: 175

TOTAL POINTS: 1661 + 175 = 1836

Army: High Elves

Units: 9 Maiden (Sea) Guards and 1 Great Eagle

Painting: The maidens were wonderful to paint, my favourite unit so far. The Great Eagle was fairly quick and simple to do, I tried to make it look somewhat like a real bird.

Basing: Same as usual. The stone pillar thing on the Eagle's base is from the Mage kit.

Points: 167, a bit low but I pained more than the required amount last month

Total: 1452

Next Month: White Lions

Note: I'm still trying to come up with something for the 10th sea guard so if anyone's having ideas feel free to PM me :)

malorian: I think it's a race between you and i, and i also think you took the lead. loved the dwarfs and now love the lizards. good luck with stegazilla!!!

fabius bile: my averland and your averland should join forces. i love the checked shield you did

someone2040: cool theme and nice maneater. wanna see more.

inquisitor pariah: i like the harpies. try looking at tyranid gargoyle wings, much easier than green stuff!

jim: you took my idea for the warrior priest ;) love the copperish tone of the knights.

braad: did it have to be one of my slayers heads under his foot? love the shaman models mask.

perplexiti: i've always enjoyed yellow on dwarfs. good to see some more longbeards too!

dakka pantz: this will be a looker when it's all done! love the maneater and general.

haydnc: shifting paint! very cool idea, where did you find the stuff?

matrim_cauthon: cool model! didn't even think of it. hydra is equally as awesome. love the 5 headed slug :)

OK folks, here's some comments:

@ Emporer Norton - awesome stuff for both Empire armies. I particularly like the hat on the wizard, very nice detail on there.

@ Joseph Vintinlla - excellent Dragon, especially if it's your first monster. The silver armour looks a little shiny though so I think it could do wish a black ink/badab black wash but that might just be the picture

@ Gargobot - gorgeous steam tank

@ Dark Apostle - love that wizard, you've mixed the colours together very well. How come you've decided to go for a level 2 though if you only intend it to be a scroll caddy?

@ Malorian - nice looking stuff, those Stegadon's are going to look awesome once they're all painted, very daunting to face! How do you feel about the old ones? I had two in my lizardman army but once the new ones came out I sold them both as they just don't match up unfortunately

@ Fabus Bile - amazing steam tank. Seriously though, this is turning from TOFP to Tale of Steam Tank painters, that's like 5 amazing ones in last two months!

@ someone2040 - very nice stuff, loving the Ogre & the bearmen look great too

@ Inquisitor Pariah - excellent idea to pin the wings on. Love the idea of using deamonettes as hapries too. the brown looks a little flat though, a wash/ink would give it a bit more definition (again this could be the photos though)

@ Jim - excellent knights & warrior priest, I love the marks on the priests face especially

@ Braad - excellent green skins again, nice to see an AoW mini again too (there might be another AoW mini making an appearance soon...)

@ perplexti - looks pretty cool but bad photos! any chance of some better ones?

@ Doi - that's a seriously freaky joker!

@ Dakkapantz - very nice stuff, the yellow has been done very well one those Empire & I love the tattoos on the Ogre

@ dwarfhold13 - excellent looking stuff, especially malakai

@ Darnok - already commented in your thread but that's still ace!

@ hadync - what paint is that you're using, that's a really interesting look & I really like it. The army looks ace all lined up together & alternative crew for the RBT is a good idea, I might have to do that for mine! I wouldn't worry too much about your army list. I build all my armies up by painting stuff that interests me & then think about an army later which is what I've done during the previous 2 years of TOFP & over on TO40KP

Matrim_Cauthon - excellent stuff even if I think it's slightly sacraligious to cut up quest stuff (ok, so the minis aren't great & it is just a door, but it's principal!). The colours definately work & that does not look like a clown, it looks great! The Hydra is also excellent

@ Desert Rain - very nice High Elves, nice to see the chicks again as they're a unit that don't get to be seen often.

@ dwarfhold13 (again) - very cute picture, it's not the tail that worries me, it's that you dressed your dog up in your babies clothes!!

That's everyone so far. Although I'm not in the Tale I am currently painting something fantasy related so hoping people won't mind me jumping in & posting some pictures for some feedback (I am sort of an honoury TOFP member!)?

Comments:

EmperorNorton: I really like the look of the mage. The roses and the detail on his cap really pop. The cannon crew also look great (striping always does).

Joseph vintila: Looks good and evil. Oddly enough though the part that stands out the most is the rocks :)

Gargobot: Oh shiney ;) Look very nice and good job on the small print.

Dark apostle: That mage looks awesome! Nuff said.

Fabius bile: I know it's only 3 small guns, but with those extra guns sticking out your stanks looks very impressive. the banner is a nice touch too.

someone2040: Nice bearmen. The paw shield and other conversions really do a lto for them.

Inquisitor Pariah: Hey, those are better wings than I could have made. And might I add that any one looking at the wings probably also likes dance and interior design ;)

Jim: The head swap gives them a lot of character. Good idea.

Braad: That AoW model is great. I like the shading you did on the horns.

Perplexiti: Keep it up. the army is coming along well.

Dakkapantz: It all looks great but I feel like I've seen that maneater before. Must have been the WIP pic. Like the tatoos anyway :)

dwarfhold: Engineers, be they dwarf slayer or empire, always look cool :)

Darnok: I love the conversion!

Haydnc: that cloak is very cool. Nicely done.

Matrim_Cauthon: The peg looks fairly tip-prone... but sure looks nice and bright (I can never pull that off).

Desert Rain: I really like the shading you've done on those robes.

Comments on comments:

dwarfhold: I didn't realize we were in a race. I was too busy trying to keep up with my own crazy schedule ;)

Jonahmaul: the old ones are still great for being regular stegadons while the bigger/newer ones are ancient stegadons. Best why to WYSIWYG it to me (other than the weapons of course).

Jonahmaul

You got enough points (885), so you don't need to use any jokers up to now, and only paint 15 points next month to keep on track. Then you got 3 months for the last 100 points... I wouldn't be worried.

EmperorNorton: Daylight pictures ftw! Lovely painting especially on the Ulrican.

Joseph Vintila: Great dragon. I really like the stone pillar though of course the whole thing looks good.

Dark Apostle: Still an awesome conversion, still the best flames imho.

Malorian: If thereís one person I think can pull off 5 stegs in one month itís you. Nice razordons btw.

Fabius Bile: Lovely stank with a very cool banner. The engineer is well done too.

someone2040: Congrats on best painted, your army does look very good!

Inquisitor Pariah: Interesting idea with the wings. The light brown looks good, I think thatíll look great next to the rest of the army.

Jim: Yay Hochland! Unfortunately I donít know any company that does sun emblem shields, though I guess thatís something you should be able to find on historical wargaming sites.

Braad: Nice glowing effect on Wurzagg. I also like the dark skin on the BOB.

perplexiti: Love the old Longbeard models, you did them justice.

Dakkapantz: Lol, nice wizard! :D Nice painting, really like the duelists and the tats on the maneater.

dwarfhold13: Very good looking goblin hewer, love the gold. With such a nice engineer Iím really looking forward to the stank. (Apparently I kept some of my innocence, I only saw what you implied is there to be seen, after you implied it.)

haydnc: Oh, I didnít get the flip paint on the pics before, but here it looks really good. The pale skin on the sorceress is also very well done.

Matrim_Cauthon: I donít think itís too colorful at all, the white Pegasus cancels that out. Nice painting and a very cool base make this one of the best captasuses (or captasi ) Iíve seen so far. Good work on the hydra too.

Desert Rain: I think I commented on these already, and they still look as good as then (if not better :p). Nice paintjob on the eagle too.

@Jonahmaul and Malorian: Thank you. :)

Ow, right... well, they hired a new modeller at AOW, and he had to make a test model. And it's excellent if you ask! It was in the rumour thread a few days ago, but I think they moved it... Let's see...

No, they shouldn't. I think AOW can be much more free in their designs while acting on their own, and a bit of competition might also keep GW sharp in their own modelling.

If that model is released in time, I might add it to my list for this tale :p

wow... well i knew it was coming and here it is.
i've had a realization tonight and i need to do this now so that i don't fiddle faddle around with it tomorrow.
unfortunately i have to withdraw from the tale, and it doesn't come easy for me. a LOT has changed for me in the past year since we started and now i've come to the road less traveled in my life and i've got a loving wife, new baby, and now school and owning a business all colliding in the center. i was going to try and keep up with the painting, but every minute i put toward painting my toy soldiers i'm robbing from somewhere else in my life. and once i'm in school i've got to spend every minute keeping up because engineering is really no joke.
i know some of you guys really don't hold finishing a painting hobby tale very high, but i was really looking forward to finishing a lot of stuff and a hate not achieving any goal i set, but i have finished over 2000 points of two different armies and close to 1000 in two more which is the most i've ever done.
i'll still paint when the time is handed to me to do so, but i've got to get serious and handle life.
so to all, thank you for keeping me motivated like you have, thank you for all of the awesome comments, and i hope i can join you again down the road for my own sanity! and don't think i won't be on the sidelines watching and cheering you on. take care all and Harry and Braad (and any others involved) keep doing what you are doing.
cheers!!!

@ EmperorNorton (Middenheim): The Warrior Priest is excellent (especially the face and scrollwork) but Iím not sold on the Wizardís colours. I think Iíll have to wait to see what heís like in a unit to make a final call though.

@ EmperorNorton (Middenland): The cannon and accompanying crew are fantastic, I really like the white and blue striped sleave on the centre model. Oh, and the Mortar is nice too...

@ Joseph Vintila: I think the armour plates could do with a little bit of shading but otherwise it looks great. I really like how the rock section turned out, rather eye catching next to the black.

@ Gargobot: Great work, the scroll work on the front in particular is really well done (sure is a fair bit of that going around this month...)

@ Dark Apostle: I was going to say that yet again youíve done wonders with the Flagellant kit, but you seem to have used half a dozen or more plus sculpted your own extras... That said, despite how amazing this one is, I think the Grey Wizard from your log is better!

@ Malorian: Very nice. Iím pretty sure all of that yellow would drive me nuts! Looking forward to seeing Operation Pentasteg completed.

@ Fabius Bile: Excellent work, especially the skeleton on the banner. But what is it with all of the Steam Tanks this year? At least last year it was Giants!

@ someone2040: And a well deserved Best Painted award it is! Congratulations. The Maneater is fantastic. Though I demand a group shot of the finished army!

@ Inquisitor Pariah: Nice work. Iím not sold on the light brown colour alongside the flesh colour on the wings though, theyíre too similar. And makes it look like the Ďarmí of the wing is just lacking a highlight. And surely wings of that size wouldnít make much difference if theyíre transported un/attached to the model? Dragon wings I can understand, but it just doesnít seem like it would make that much difference?

@ Jim: Well if I only say one thing about your work this month, is that the bearded Outrider head swap works so well that it makes the entire Knight kit look like new, even makes up for the lack lustre horses!

@ Braad: First off, great work all round, especially Wurzaggís glowing eyes, but shouldnít the shield on the AoW model be turned ninety degrees so that when he is using it as a shield the face is the right way up?

@ perplexiti: Looks good from what I can tell (the flash seems to have washed out all of your colours). Very nice Longbeards.

@ Dakkapantz: The Village Lunatic Wizard is excellent! I can just see him running around the battlefield screaming things like ĎNo fishing for chicken on Thursdayís!í and ĎThe moon wonít stop talking to me!í while randomly blasting things with fire... :p. The Maneater is amazing, the tattoos kind of remind me of what happens to your character when you use a lot of magic in Fable.

PAGE 2

@ dwarfhold13: Malakai is fantastic! So is that Engineer. Too bad youíve had to call it quits, but that is understandable with so much on your plate.

@ Darnok: Genius! I knew rkunisch couldnít keep you away for long!

@ haydnc: Very nice, the metallic paint works really well on the sorceressís cape which was actually rather surprising since it isnít a metal item.

@ Matrim_Cauthon (Empire): A scenic base that would do Harry proud! Excellent work, the dash of red works really well.

@ Matrim_Cauthon (DE): Great work, I prefer the older Hydra over the newer one so youíve done good by me!

@ Desert Rain: I can definitely see that you enjoyed painting those Maidens as theyíre one of the best painted units in your army! I think the Great Eagle needs a little extra something to break up the base though.

@ dwarfhold - you'll be missed but I know how you feel as I put a lot of store in getting an army finished which was something I haven't managed for almost 10 years until I started the TOFP 2 years ago. I had to drop out of this years TO40KP quite early as a result of moving to a different city & starting a postgraduate degree & it really bummed me out as does not having as much time to paint as I'd like (I know what it's like to feel that your free time isn't actually free & I have to decide which of my hobbies to do when I do have some)

Considering the amount you painted so far... If I put your 2 dwarf armies together, and push your lizards to the boyz section, then you still got two valid armies done! While maybe not finishing up to the goal you set for yourself, you'll still have the honour of finishing two armies in the tale.

FAIL!

Sorry guys, Alberta just went from so dry we were on fire ban to blizzard in 24 hours.

There is no question that Operation Pentasteg will be a failure, and even getting four done will be tough.

Comments for all brave painters still in the tale:

@EmperorNorton: Good painting all around, I especially like the hour glass and the colour of the warrior priests beard. As for low model count - it's way higher than my average monthly achievements :) The old metal war machines have a special charm to them.

@Joseph Vintila:Nice purples on the dragon. Is that a centaur in the making next to the "my little pony"-coloured horse? ;)

@Gargobot: The stank turned out really well. Nice lettering on the prow scrolls.

@Malorian: That's a lot of minis in just one month! Will be interesting to see how you manage the stegadon-race!

@Fabius Bile: Nice painting, and funny background story to boot!

@someone2040: I really like your converted bearmen (not too fond of the Beorg model though), and the trousers and boots on the ogre looks really good.

@Inquisitor Pariah: Removable wings - sounds like a brilliant idea. Flesh tones look good, and I wouldn't worry about the wings - they look fine, no need to change your own creation for something everyone can get hold of. Keep it uniqe!

@Jim: Nice warrior priest! He really looks like he means business. Th knights look cool, but maybe you should do something about the horses eyes - they look pretty spooky without pupils.

@Braad: The glowing eyes look good! The shield seems to be held at a strange angle when seen from behind, bot maybe that's just the photos.

@Perplexiti: Looks good, though it's a bit hard to tell from the photo.

@Dakkapantz: Ok, my impression of the four units: Great, great, great and great! Nice tattoos on th maneater, space marine torso (!) for the captain :D, hillarious wizard and very nice duelists. Duelists? I think I need some duelists for my army. And I happen to have 25 archer bodys and lots of arms with pistols. Hmm...

@dwarfhold: Sad to see you go,but you leav with style: malakai and the engineer look mighty fine I say! I can understand your prorities, maybe someday you'll find time to pick up your brushes again?

@Darnol: :p

@haydnc: Way cool effect! The purple goes really well with the glittering green.

@Matrim_Cauthon: I think the red is a nice touch, not clown-ish at all. Nice base too! I don't fancy the old hydra, but I really can't fault you painting.

@Desert Rain: They really are wonderful minis arn't they? I remember when they were first released - I had just started my militatry service, and the first two weeks we spent in th bush, and I remeber how I really looked forward to the leave and the opportunity to paint up the everqueen and her maiden guard.

Comments on comments!
@Jonahmaul: Thanks. Lvl 2 is purely to proceed faster with the tale

@Malorian, Gargobot: Thx!

@Doi: Well, the flagellant kit was indeed once again drafted into service, but as you say I have combined it with quite a few other bits and bobs. The other wizard will also make an appearance in the tale, although it will have to wait until next month.

It's finally here...

Dark Elves.

Unit: Morathi, 2 Masters, 1 Sorceress and 10 Crossbows

Points: 905

Army Total Points:2578

Models: 54

Build/Conversion:Nil

Painting: Nothing new to add.

Basing: Sand, GW Charadon Granite, Vallejo MC Stone Grey, flock/static grass.

Highs/Lows: Well this month I ran over time, but thereís good reason! I have FINISHED!!!!!!!
After nearly 2 years of painting to a deadline I have managed to finish my Dark Elf Army. With this monthís effort I have not a single Dark Elf left unpainted. It is a great relief actually. I can now work at a more comfortable rate =)
For some of the good AoW sculpts, they have far too many small fiddly bits that canít be pinned.

Still to do: Nothing to see here.

Dice Roll: 5 again!

Morathi.

Crossbows.

Next Month:
Nothing =)

I shall post a completed army shot and unit pictures in the next few days.

This has been a fun couple of years with this challenge. Alas I shall not be partaking in any further challenges, due to RL commitments and needing to work on my many and varied other piles of miniatures waiting to be painted.
Good luck to all, and keep up the excellent work.

Bluesabre: Those models all look great! I really like the face of the left character model.

"Alas I shall not be partaking in any further challenges, due to ... my many and varied other piles of miniatures waiting to be painted."

Is it possible to enter the tale with no specific army? That way you could paint those scattered models and be part of the tale at the same time :)

@ bluesabre - very nice stuff again but if you're done then where the hell is the god damn army shot!!!! Also I know what you mean about those AoW sculpts, they're beautiful but so fiddly in parts. I have the sorceress & the noble & the bits that come seperate are ridiculous (the bloody top knot & the dragon's head being the most notable examples)

Hmm, good question. The point of the tale is mainly getting stuff finished, but we attempt to do that by painting some kind of army...
But ofcourse, asking Harry would be the best way to go.

But maybe a small boys-section army?

On the other hand, as bluesabre says, not having to paint towards a deadline for some time is nice too.

I havenít posted comments before, so this is a novelty for me. Here goes!

@Emperor Norton: Nice to see those Middenheim models in action again. I like the shading on the wizardís robes. , Looking forward to seeing them with finished bases.

@Joseph Vintila: Cool looking dragon. The purple looks great with the silver armour. I like the naturalistic colouring on the rocks.

@Gargobot: Beautiful painting style Ė lovely and crisp and clear, which I think works well with human armies. Brilliant freehand work on the scrolls.

@Dark Apostle: No offence to anyone else here, but this is my favourite army in this yearís TOFP. Your painting is excellent, your use of colour shows subtlety and confidence and your conversions are imaginative, clever and brilliantly executed. And I LOVE that wizard.

@Malorian: I like the black and yellow colour scheme Ė is it a deliberate reference to the Aztec jaguar warriors? Well done for painting so many in one month. The Razordons look particularly cool with the black spines. Operation Pentasteg is sheer madness!

@Fabius Bile: The steam tank looks great with the added banner and the black and gold colour scheme works really well.

@Someone2040: Wow! I didnít twig at first that these were all conversions Ė I thought they were the original GW models. Hell of a lot of work there Ė great job with the green stuff. Maneater looks cool too.

@Inquisitor Pariah: Ambitious project and difficult to pull off well Ė Iím considering trying it myself, but it doesnít look easy. Iíd say youíve done a pretty good job Ė theyíre the right scale and work well with the daemonette models. I also like the material youíve used on the bases.

@Jim: Those head swaps work brilliantly. I think itís important to make Empire knights look very different to Bretonnian knights and the choice of head and the bronze/black armour makes them look really empire-y. Personally, I wouldnít give them blazing sun shields Ė Iíd stick with the empire theme and give them state troop shields, but hey, your call.

@Braad: Great looking characters. Theyíll look really impressive amongst the ranks. The glowy eyes look cool.

@Perplexiti: The yellow works well on your dwarfs. The old metal models for dwarfs have stood the test of time a lot better than most armies. Always nice to see a few classic models.

@Dakkapantz: Congrats on completing your army! The final models look great.

@Dwarfhold13: Real shame youíre leaving us. Your models are great. Maybe youíre just being too ambitious? Just paint one or two models every now and then Ė itís better than giving up altogether.

@Darnok: I think more ogres should wear bunny ears.

@Matrim_Cauthon: Love the base for the Pegasus. Really dynamic and very cool. And the red looks fine with the blue and yellow, but Iíd use it in small doses. Hydra looks cool too.

@Desert rain: Great to see those old models again, and youíve really done them justice. Eagle looks good too.

@Bluesabre: Great looking characters. And congrats on finishing your army. Can we have an army shot?

Thanks to all those who commented on my work, it really helps to read words of encouragement. For those who have asked, the two-tone green and purple paint is from Halfords (a car parts shop in the UK). I had it mixed up specially, but unfortunately it cost me a bomb.

I wasnít happy with the sorceress as she was (and flash photography is amazingly unforgiving) so Iíve gone back to her and added some detailing to the face and added some bling. I think she looks better for it.

Iíve also had my first attempt at a scenic base. I wanted her raised off the ground a little to stand apart from the rank and file, and ended up going OTT with a giant stone pillar, but hopefully it suits the model. The rock is made from Super Sculpy, the brambles are brass-etched ivy with the leaves cut off and the roses are green stuff. What do you guys reckon?

@ dwarfhold13: Malakai is fantastic! So is that Engineer. Too bad you’ve had to call it quits, but that is understandable with so much on your plate.

Sorry to see you go dwarfhold13 :(

@ dwarhold13
Considering the amount you painted so far... If I put your 2 dwarf armies together, and push your lizards to the boyz section, then you still got two valid armies done! While maybe not finishing up to the goal you set for yourself, you'll still have the honour of finishing two armies in the tale.

@dwarfhold: Sad to see you go,but you leav with style: malakai and the engineer look mighty fine I say! I can understand your prorities, maybe someday you'll find time to pick up your brushes again?

@Dwarfhold13: Real shame you’re leaving us. Your models are great. Maybe you’re just being too ambitious? Just paint one or two models every now and then – it’s better than giving up altogether.

thank you guys for the support, seriously! i'm not giving up all together by any means, and actually, i look to finish up the dwarfs and lizards hopefully in the next few months anyway. it was just the tied down to thinking i needed to finish something that was overwhelming me. i love painting, it's what got me into playing wargames anyway (tyranids in 2nd ed.!). i tell you this though.. every time i walk into my room with my painting stuff. my 80% finished steam tank just calls me out. if everything kinda levels out here soon i'll finish it up and post tofp figures on here to show you guys. seriously, all i have is 19 dwarf warriors to finish and i'll be DONE. how's that for close. it may take me all 3 months though to get to them.
like i said.. thanks for the help on getting stuff done, and i'll be in and out cheering the rest of you guys on...
congrats to everyone still here too!!!

There is no question that Operation Pentasteg will be a failure, and even getting four done will be tough.
NOOOO! what have you done chap? i'm sure you'll still be fine, thats a lotta 'don you got there.. you'll be alright.. good luck with it though!

Bluesabre: Outstanding! morathi looks great and i love the basing you did. the avatars of war mini's are great too and seeing that witch queen model, i really wanted to pick one of those up for crone hellebron on foot for my witch elf list... another day on another dollar! can't wait to see your army.

haydnc: i like the base for that model. where is that model from anyway? i have one here and i got it with a batch of stuff. is it the old box set?

Ok, comments time.

@EmperorNorton: I do like those Middenheim models, also a fan of old school stuff like your artillary and that's a nice wizard too. Nice job man.

@Joseph Vintila: Sweet dragon mate.

@Gargobot: Loving all the Stanks coming out in this tale, nice one. I like the way you've done your gold.

@Dark Apostle: Awesome wizard mate, love that skin tone you've got.

@Malorian: Wicked lizards man, it's cool to see them in different schemes from GW's one.

@Fabius Bile: Nice Stank and engineer,

@someone2040: Great ogre, and bearmen too.

@Inquisitor Pariah: Those old daemonettes are great models, far superior IMHO to the plastic ones, although I am a bit of a fuddy duddy in I prefer metal for most things.

@Jim: Nice old knights, like that warrior priest too.

@Braad: I always liked that Wurrzag model, and AOW stuff is really nice too. Great paint jobs on both minis.

@Dakkapantz: Nice painting, I especially like the tattoos on the ogre.

Page 2

@dwarfhold13: Awesome stuff, especially malakai, really great job on the little fella.

@haydnc: Nice dark elves, good to see older minis popping up in the tale.

@Matrim_Cauthon: Nice bright pegasus and captain, awesome. Also a very nice hydra too, love the scales.

@Desert Rain: Nice, more classic minis painted well.

Page 3

@Bluesabre: Very nice elves, you got a nice skin tone for them too.

The Daemocratic War-party of Barack the Bringer of Change
Manly Warriors of Chaos army (expansion to last year's Tale army)

Painted this month:
(actually last month, but anyway)

JFK
Daemon Prince of Tzeentch @ 355 pts
- Magic level 1

Total so far: 1777 pts (177 pts ahead of schedule)

http://i350.photobucket.com/albums/q438/tarjeiaasen/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/CIMG0369.jpg

Will try to update with a group shot

Background:
While Barack the Bringer of Change is the current leader of the Amerikurgan Daemocrats, the Daemon Prince JFK is the legendary and symbolic head of the cult. He ascended to daemonhood more than fifty years ago, but returns to the mortal realm every now and then to show the tribesmen how it should be done.

Construction:
The model is the bird-headed Ushabti on a scratch-built Disc. The model isn't greatly converted as it looks quite like the Lord of Change, though he got extended sleeves from the HE Mage kit and a replacement staff head (a crystal from the same kit and some tentacles from the Warhounds kit). Other than that, I used some green stuff to smooth out the decaying parts to make it look less Undead. The Disc is a 40 mm round base (i.e. slightly larger than the other Discs) with a lot of gribbly bitz and an icon made from green stuff.

Painting:
Standard Tzeentch scheme with yellow and bronze armour and a bit of blue thrown in for contrast.

Highs this month:
The birth of our firstborn, a beautiful baby girl.

...and lows:
Colic. Nuff said. :cries:

Next month:
Warhounds, I think.

Ahhh...... comments time! Well done to everyone who is still plodding along.

Page 1

@EmperorNorton - Loving the Warrior Priest (so far!) The beard and wolf pelt are excellent, and the rose vine and skull on the wizards scythe look great too. Your artillery and crews are nice, if a bit too clean ;)

@osephVintilla - Nice Conversion!

@Gargobot - Very neat and clean Steam Tank! I love your scroll work at the front - you have a much steadier hand than me!

@DarkApostle - Great pose and flame work on your wizard!

@Malorian - Nice Razordons! - Are you fed up of painting yellow yet?;)

@Someone2040 - Love the Maneater - fits very well with your theme! Good bearmen too - the woodgrain on the standard is excellent.

@Inquisitor Pariah - At least your Harpies are better than the abortions in the Clash Of The Titans remake!;)

@Jim - Great knights - very individual looking - I believe there are some round shields with the blazing sun device in the old Dogs of War range - try Mail Order.

@Braad - Great looking Orcs as always - Wurzaag's mask is very well done.

@Perplexiti - Nice colour scheme - your dwarves could ally up with my Averlanders!

@Dakkapantz - Great Painting - great scheme - nice conversion for your general!

Page 2

@Dwarfhold13 - Great work as always, the Steam TAnk Engineer looks amazing (they all do really!) - sorry to hear you have to drop out of the tale, but real life will intrude!

@Darnok - Very good Sir! I cannot imagine a more terrifying sight than an Ogre wearing bunny ears!:D

@Haydnc - Nice Dark Elves (surely a contradiction in terms?)! - That colour flip paint looks great on the cloak and shows up very well in the picture, and suits the army well.

@Matrim Cauthon - That Captain on Pegasus is awesome - a very well posed diorama (and thankyou for not painting the pegasus BLACK like in that heretical remake of Clash of the Titans grrrrrr:mad:) - nice Hydra too.

@Desert Rain - Very nice neat High Elves - you must be an expert at painting gems by now!

Page 3

@Blue Sabre - Nice work! - Congratulations on finishing your army - satisfying isn't it?

Page 4

@Avian - Nice work! - A particularly inspired conversion - I always thought Tomb Kings andTzeentch worked well together (similar colour schemes)

@Emperor Norton- I really like the warrior priest, with the white eyes he looks like an old blind warrior. I like the wizard as well but he is a bit stark for my taste, well done though. I really like the blue on your artillery crew as well

@Joseph Vintila- Looks very promising, i think that last skin highlight or two will really bring it to life.

@Gargobot- Very nice, very clean steam tank, just my style. The freehand name is very nicely done as well and the shields give it that spot of color that it needs.

@Dark Apostle- Love the mage, especially the tome and high collar. Well done, as always, inspiring conversion wise.

@Malorian-I really like the color scheme, its very effective in your blocks. That flying skink looks great as well!

@Fabius Bile- Great steam tank, neat to see a colored one after all the metal ones. I really like the banner and lettering on the front as well, is that lettering free hand?

@someone2040- Very cool maneater and Beorg's Bearmen. The skin looks well done on all of them and ive always loved Beorg, keep it up!

@Inquisitor Pariah- Very cool harpy conversion, especially the fact that theyre removable! Cool idea and execution!

@Jim- The alternate heads are great, really makes them look like old, grizzled vets. The priest is sharp as well, i like the scars.

@Braad- Very impressive submission, probably my favorite of yours so far! That savage orc shaman is awesome, i like the war paint on the boar, the mask is stellar, and the glow is well done. The AOW orc is great as well, i like his skin tone.

@Perplexiti- Hard to see details but the longbeards look good, havent seen many yellow dwarves.

@Dakkapantz- Cool entries, i really like the hireling wizard and the duellists, the black/yellow is sharp.

@dwarfhold13- Everything looks good, the goblin hewer itself looks like it could use a bit more definition but that could be the pictures. The slayers and engineer in particular look pretty darn nice. Sorry to see you go so close to your goal, just squeeze in what time you can, im sure they wont mind you posting whatever you can get done, if anything. Best of luck getting life calmed and in order!

@haydenc- Very cool looking, that color changing paint makes a unique army. Also, good job on that sorceress, shes difficult to make look good but you did it. Loved her base.

@Matrim_Cauthon- Awesome pegasus captain, awesome base. Nice, bright, and clean; good job! The hydra is nice as well but its not a model im fond of.

@Desert Rain- Good to see those old models out and about! They look good, that blue shading for the white really fits with the army. The eagle is solid as well.

@Bluesabre- Wow, you were busy! They all look good, i like the brass in particlar and the dark pegasus's wings. Impressive army overall. Congrats on finishing your army, that must feel great!

@Avian- That Ushabti does make a pretty good demon prince, i like the use of the disk to convey his flying ability. Well done! Also congrats on the daughter, condolences on the colic, it sucks for everyone involved.

Yes, the lettering on the tank and the banner is all freehand, mine is OK, but I think Gargobot's is just amazing - more practice needed methinks!

Jonahmaul
13-04-2010, 21:29
I find the best way to do freehand is with a pen. I've got a really fine line pen that I bought in a stationary shop. Have attached a picture of my marine army commander that I used it on (although admitedly it's still not as good as Gargobot's!)

Gargobot

First and foremost to dwarfhold13: You're one of the few painters that managed the transition from being seen on Warseer to being discussed on painting day (every Monday) with my gaming mates. So it really saddens me to see you drop out. On the other hand, it's always good if you've got so much positive stuff in your life that there's simply no time to paint.
So best of luck... and we're still waiting for that stank. ;)

Before this gets out of hand: I have absolutely no freehand skills. When I had Space Marines years ago (boo! hiss!) I couldn't even manage to paint straight lines on the shoulder pads. And we're talking roman ones and twos here; yeah it's that bad.
What I did on the stank, and what I did on other occasions is this (http://cdn.dickblick.com/items/207/02/20702-2009-2-3ww-l.jpg).
That's right, I too used a fine-liner. Not even this one, but an even smaller version - 0.2mm line width. It's just hand writing on those scrolls. Followed by a Devlan Mud wash to get rid of the shine fine-liners have.
I know I am a cheater (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Qt3vhbv52E). :(
I might even feel sorry, but probably not.

Jonahmaul
14-04-2010, 11:39
Gargobot - I'm slightly offended at the space marine dig, especially considering my previous post :-P Using a fine liner is not cheating! It's just common sense as writing on scrolls is hard to do. I use a 0.05 at the moment although I may try & find a smaller one at some point as I think that would make it even easier. Thanks for the hint on the Devlan Mud wash though, I'll use that in future!

I live! More importantly, so does my camera (at last). So, as promised, here's both this month and last month's submissions.

Army: Warriors of Chaos

Units: Chaos Knights with the Mark of Slaanesh, Shaggoth. (Funny story, that. My list originally contained a Hellcannon, but being unemployed and very very poor at the start of the Tale, I proxied one rather than buying the actual model, and being the superstitious gamer that I am, I do wonder if that's why it failed so badly. In the five or so games I played, it fired one shot - which missed - and spent the rest of the time eating its crew and chasing after enemy units. So out went the Hellcannon, and in came the Shaggoth.)

Build/conversion: Pretty much out of the respective boxes, although the Knight champion has the Exalted Hero's hammer arm (completing the circle of arm swaps), the top of the standard-bearer's banner is from the Chaos Marine tank sprue (I think! I have a box of random Chaos bitz from both ranges...), and I chopped off the awful little beasts from the Shaggoth's head and greenstuffed him hair to cover the gouges.

Painting: The Knights are done in the same way as all previous armoured units, and the Shaggoth is painted the same as the sorceress. (I won't lie, it was partly an experiment to see what comments I'd get on a non-boobtastic model!)

Still to do: Nowt. All done. This might not sound like cause for celebration, but I've been painting those Knights since last November.

Highs/lows: Like I said, I've been painting the Knights on and off for nearly 4 months, and I'm sick to death of them. They were actually pretty boring to paint, apart from the shields and banner. The Shaggoth was just generally fun to paint.

Points: Knights are 260 points, Shaggoth is 265. So, uh... 525 points

Total army points: 1580

Dice roll: 5

Pictures! (I've discovered that my house has the worst possible location and alignment for taking photos in natural light, so apologies for the flash.)

That was more preemptive thinking, actually I'm considering Iron Hands as my next project. :)
Good work on the termie btw.

verminmistress:
very interesting take on colors of warriors, but i like it a lot.. very nice job on the banner and also cool use of colors on the shaggoth.. i like how there is purple in the flesh to compliment the purple on the dragon part.

Gargobot:
thank you very much! i wish when i had the time that i would have stayed committed like i was over this past year. i worked in a store for a while and they labeled me "painter Jon" and i had a weekly painting clinic. do you guys get together every week?
i'll get this stank done when i can sit down with it. this week has been nuts.. deadlines on cases, getting tutored in algebra and trying to learn how to sing while i play guitar (harder than you think!) is keeping me busy busy.
next week maybe?

thanks again! and keep it up everyone!!!!

EmperorNorton - Nicely painted Warrior Priest and Sorcerer. The cannon and Mortar also look good (Although, can't say I'm a fan of those blue bases ;))

Joseph Vintila - Dragon looks like it's coming along nicely. You've chosen some nice colours for it, very effective.

Gargobot - Another great looking Steam Tank in the mix. Job well done.

Dark Apostle - Bright Wizard is painted very nice and neatly. I do think the cape is necessary though, something looks a bit 'off' without it, and I think the cape is just that.

Malorian - That's a lot of Lizards you have painted at once. Do feel for you about painting lots of models to only realise they're worth a miniscule amount of points. It's tough. Looks like you've got your work made out for you with all the Stegadons to come.

Fabius Bile - A different steam tank! I think all the previous ones have used a lot of metal, but yours is adorned in the Averland colours. I think it works quite nicely, and you've got yourself a great looking model.

Inqusitor Pariah - The conversions are very nice, and certainly make more alluring looking harpies.

Jim - I like your Knights. Look like grizzled veterans, so nice kit bash there. The Warrior Priest is a cool looking kitbash. The left arm looks a bit bare though, I perhaps would've had him holding a book.

Braad - Your characters look awesome. I love the effect you have pulled off with Wurzag's glowing eyes.

Perplexiti - Nice looking Dwarves. Keep the Longbeards coming and flesh out those ranks :)

Dakkapantz - More cool looking mercenaries from my fellow Dogs of War painter. The Man-Eater looks very nice, I have that model waiting to be painted as well :). Like me though, need an army shot!

Page 2
Dwarfhold13 - The Goblin Hewer looks great. You've done a fantastic job on the crazy slayer-engineer. Makes me want to get out and paint my Hewer. The Halflings and Swordsmen look good as well, but you've obviously still got a lot of stuff to paint!

Darnok - Heh. Very nice Easter Ogre. Is he some kind've Easter mascot of Ogre Culture?

Haydnc - Wow, that sorceress turned out really well. You've got yourself a really neat way of painting metal, it looks really cool (And surprised it's the first time I've noticed it).

Matrim_Cauthon - The Captasus looks great. Good use of basing to make an interesting piece. I've got my Mercenary Captasus ready for painting as well. Your Hydra is also very nice looking, skin looks great and a nice base to go along with it.

Desert Rain - Great looking Maiden Guard you got there. I do have to wonder why GW discontinued some very nice looking figures...

Page 3
Bluesabre - Your characters all look very nice, as well as the Repeater Crossbowmen. Looks like you've also crossed the 2000 point line, so congratulations! Those army shots miss the most important part though, the whole army altogether! Get them all out and whack them on a table!

Page 4
Avian - Cool use of the Ushtabi. You've definately found a suitable model for a follow of Tzeentch.

Calibretto - Cannon looks nice. The Crewmen looks perhaps a bit too clean for cannon crew.

Page 5
Verminmistress - Your Knights and Shaggoth look excellent. The choice of colour on the Knights especially, as it keeps them suitably dark while still being purple.

There is actually a cape - only it doesn't show in the pic. :) See my sig for a link to my empire blog where there are some WIP-pics. If I remember correctly the cape shows in those.

@Verminmistress: Splendid work on the banner. Really nice freehand. I also like the purplish hue of the shaggoth skin very much.

And at the middle of the month im logging in with my once again with alittle to few points.

Models; 4 Chaos chosen w shields: 76 pts
Dice roll; 3
Still to do; Flock basing on 2 of the models, and some red high-lighting of the edges on some of the red sections of the armour.

Highlights of these few models have to be the very simple conversions; the old chaos warrior shield, the old warrior helm, the spear and the deamonettes head.

http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/1343/p1000645.jpg
Edit; wrong picture. the model with the round marauder horsemen shield replaced with warrior with old warrior helm.

Sorry nothing from me this month, real life yet again. I've painted the a unit of skinks but I simply don't have time to take any photos. Luckily I'm on target points wise, so I won't need to joker this month. Great painting everyone, keep up the good work.

Hi all,

I think I need to drop out. I have to paint a lot of 40k stuff for a tourney in june, with my motivation at a low that will be hard enough to manage.
I will continue to keep track of your stuff. Really great things all around!

Braad: I made a mistake (forgot command group) when I calculated the points for this months contribution. The points for this month is supposed to be 182 not 167 and the total 1477 instead of 1452.

I'll try to post some comments tomorrow.

@ Desert Rain
I now got 185, 203, 207, J, 0, 430, 260 and 182 totalling up to 1467.
The sum is calculated in excel so should be correct. Maybe you can run through these numbers to see where it's wrong?

Sweet, just got Azhag and his wyvern sprayed black :)

Desert Rain

I miscalculated, 1467 is indeed the total not 1477.

I'm going to have to joker this month, I've got a little bit done but I'm a little behind for Aprils painting as well so rather than posting less than 100 points twice I'd rather just post the correct amount next month.

EmperorNorton - I really like the Ulric Priest model...you don't see them around too often...Wizard is neat and tidy & the cannon crew look really good - what is your method painting the blue?

Joseph Vintila - For a first attempt at a big monster I would be proud of the result you have achieved - I really like the purple and overall thumbs up!

Gargobot - Hochland Stanks FTW!!!...annoyingly your entry is better than mine  The halving on the shields works very well.

Dark Apostle - Great conversion/kit bash...the skin tone is really good and the fiery reds and oranges look really solid...I'd like to see more photos of the back to see more details of this cape you claim is there :p

Malorian - Awesome amounts of painting this month, well done!

Fabius Bile - Its is really good to see a Stank that is not mostly metallics...I think your one works really well plus fantastic freehand work on the banner which helps make this more a centre piece of your army

someone2040 - The Bearman are great old models and you have done a really good job, the Ogre looks ace too...

Inqusitor Pariah - The Harpy conversions work really well, and the scratch built wings look really good.

Braad - The glowing eyes on the shaman work really well and so do the blue warpaint markings on the boar...are you going to swap out the old style with the new boars once released?

Perplexiti - The gold looks really good and the yellow works well too

Dakkapantz - The Ogre look excellent - again, the blue warpaint looks really cool...the Merc General is a good kitbash and I like the red and yellow piping

Page 2

Dwarfhold13 - The dwarf crew are very well done and the black/yellow & red work really well on your troops

Darnok - Great job! Thanks for posting and making me smile

Haydnc - Great old model..it will mean you have a really unique model in your army...I like the cold skin tone you use, it looks just right for DElves

Matrim_Cauthon - The pegasus looks awesome!..the base looks really impressive, great job!

Desert Rain - This is the first time I've seen the maiden guard with dark hair and it works very well...

Page 3

Bluesabre - Well done on finishing...Great work on the Sorceress and Dark Peg...is the black highlighted with Hawk Turquoise?

Page 4

Avian - The Ushabti works really well as a Tzeentch daemon - good idea and well painted as ever!

Calibretto - The stirland river patrol scheme looks great...great job!

Page 5

Verminmistress - The freehand banner is superb and the purpley-flesh on the shaggoth is great!

Keep going everyone and see you in the new thread in a couple of weeks!

Thanks!
No, I'm not gonna swap anything. I rather add than change. My plan is that all normal orc boyz and bosses are on the old-style boars, and the black orcs and big 'uns will be on the new boars. Fluff-wise something like a different, stronger breed brought by the black orcs when they escaped the lands of the chaos dwarves.

What's this? The 24th of April already?

Need to get my act into gear and stop working on Orks of my Diorama side project...

Nice work so far Calibretto. Why did you attach the rider to the horse though? Surely it would have been easier to paint the rider and horse (with it's head this time) seperately than the rider + horse and then the horse's head?

My Orks will have snow bases (haven't painted any yet) but the diorama does not. You're at least half right :p.

Awesome stuff guys! as ever I wish I'd had more timeto get on this. Impresse3d with how many fellow Averland painters there are out there,

particularly impressed with Gargobot's steam tank and Dark Apostle that wizard is just eye candy! I make have to 'make a homage to' (i.e STEAL) that idea for myself :p

keep up the good work everyone!
