What happened to Harry? Hasn't he started the thread yet? Well, I finally got some internet again, so here goes:

----

The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2009-2010

Month 9

It's all down hill from here.

All the best,
Harry

This is the thread on which you post your work for month NINE. (The work you have done in the month of APRIL).

Please make only one post (for each army) in the first week.

Your post should include:

1) The description and points of the unit. AND YOUR TOTAL POINTS SO FAR.
2) Any additional information you care to share with us about your painting.
3) A Dice roll. (Explained below)
4) Up to six photographs of your months work and the army so far.

The dice role.

With over 250 painters in this years Fantasy tale it would be impossible to try to comment on everyones work. (Although there are some who will try!) We considered splitting into army factions which would have left every one only posting on others painting the same army. Someone came up with the great idea of dicing for it. So you throw a dice and record the score. You then try and post comment on everyone who has the same dice roll as you. In return you can expect comment form all of them. This way each month we will all be commenting on a random selection of other painters work.
(Note: this does not stop anyone posting anything they like about anyones work regardless of the numbers rolled!)

A Word on using photographs

You can use up to six photographs (the maximum allowed in a post by warseer). To show us your months painting and the 'army' so far. The best size for showing your work is 640x480 (It can be smaller or you can use ‘thumbs’ which link to bigger pictures but they must not be bigger or it takes too long for the pages to load). The best thing to do is to resize them, wherever you are hosting your images, and then drag and drop the ‘img code’ directly into the text.

This month (APRIL) WIP Thread.

AFTER THE FIRST WEEK ... This thread will become the 'normal' ... comment and crit’ of others work, Work In Progress (WIP) pictures of your work as it develops, how you are getting on, seeking advice and encouragement for your ideas and your painting and generally chatting about the project, life and the cosmos.

However, please continue to only post your work for the first week. This is to give everyone a chance to post up their finished work before it gets lost amongst a sea of chat and WIP shots.

Thanks again to everyone who has signed up for this madness.

If you have not signed up yet…

If you have not signed up yet and would like to join us you are not to late.
Just post on this thread which army and how many points you intend to paint and then crack on.
Anything you post this month will count for last months painting.
(Although you will have to push on and paint something for next month to catch us up).

If you can not post anything this month …

DO NOT PANIC! … use a joker.
Busy lives calm down again, enthusiasm returns, time presents itself.
When it does 'push hard and 'buy back' your joker by painting extra. If your struggling post and say so. (don't just slip quietly away) You will be amazed by the posts of encouragement and support which come from your fellow painters eager to see you successfully complete this project. Most importantly ... 'Stick with it' ... The prize of getting your stuff painted remains worth all the effort.

What is it all about?

Do you want to paint a 2000 point army in the next 12 months?
Do you want to meet a great bunch, with the same goal who will encourage and support you throughout the process?
Can you do the same in return?
Are you completely bonkers?
Then you have come to the right place!

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2009 and finishing with their last post on the last day of July 2010.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys (and Infants!)

Because this is harder than you would think ... This year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month we have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).
I have also added a list for the 'Infants' or Warmaster painters.

The Painters: (Thanks as always to Braad!)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.
.....TRY AND MAKE IT CLEAR YOU ARE SIGNING IN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR POST SO I DON'T MISS IT!

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. Write much as you like. We love background. write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Regrettably it has come to this:
http://www.thejunction.de/wp-content/uploads/my_little_joker_by_spippo.jpg

Last month was horrible for me in many ways, one of which was that I could not use my painting area, so I couldn't paint at all.
So it's a Joker for both of my armies, although my plan had been to have everything painted by now and spend this month on basing and such.
Thanks for all the comments in the last thread, they were the high point of my month.

ARMY: Empire Nordland Army

UNIT: Empire Knights and Mounted Standard Bearer

HIGHS & LOWS: High is that I have another unit of knights painted for next month, low is that I now have a serious dislike for painting cavalry, which will hopefully pass. Lucky I really don't like the Bretonnian fluff.

POINTS: 139 + 85 = 224

TOTAL POINTS: 1619 + 224 = 1843 pts

ARMY: Dark Elves

UNIT: (Old school) Cold One Knights and Sorceress on Cold One

PAINTING: The cavalry keeps on coming... But these really were a blast to paint. I highlighted every one of the scales tediously, too bad it doesn't realyy show on the pictures.

HIGHS/LOWS: Low for me was the very bad cast on the sorceress... it doesn't show on the picture but she has a terrible mould line running all over her face that I tried to fix, but now it looks as if half her face is burnt. I guess I should call her 'the woman without a face' :).

POINTS: 151 + 155 = 306

TOTAL POINTS: 1836 + 306 = 2136 pts (made it!! yeah baby, yeah!!)

ARMY: Hochland Empire

DICE ROLL: Not bothering this month as I will be commenting on everyone's work!

UNIT: 10 Huntsman w/ Partridge (I'm unsure of the in-game effect of the bird but assume it is awesome) plus LvL 2 Light Wizard w/ Dispel Scroll & Power Stone

CONVERSIONS : Nothing to see here...

PAINTING: I painted the smocks brown so they look a bit more 'camoflaged' than the normal state troopers...I painted the bird as a Partridge and I'm particularly pleased with it!...The wizard has been done in a variety of light blues and greys and did some scribbles on his spellbook...

STILL TO DO: Nothing

HIGHS AND LOWS: Enjoyed painting the Huntsmen as the sculpts have a lot of character...Took some advice from the other Empire painters in the tale who had reccomended painting the wizard in pieces - worked out really well - so thanks to them!

POINTS: 245

TOTAL POINTS: 1,562

WHAT's NEXT: I need to paint more swordsmen to finish off my main unit - about 14 I think...plus I've dug out the special/limited edition metal Battle Standard Bearer that I've had in my bitz box for years who is crying out for some love...

Hey everyone! It has been a lot of fun, but I'm dropping out. I'm proud of both my own meager accomplishment and everybody else's awesome miniatures as well. Life is just too tumultuous right now to devote any time to the hobby!
Good luck with the rest of the tale! Seems a shame to drop out so late in the game.
Thanks for all of the motivation! I'll try to jump on next year's tale with a vengeance! :D

Joker for me.
Al my orcs are stored in foam, my painting table is dissembled, and my brushes are somewhere in a box. I also just received a key for my new house, and this afternoon I'll be signing forms to officially buy. Hopefully I'll find some time later this month, but I doubt I'll be able to finish... We'll see...

Added the table to the first post.

ARMY: Dark Elves

DICE ROLL: 4

UNIT: Assassin with additional hand weapon (96 points)

PAINTING: Same camouflage as the Shades but I made sure he had some gold on him too. I painted the gemstone in the hilt of the sword from a guide in Codex: Eldar but it hasn't come out too well in the picture

BASING: Got a good tip about making sure patches of static grass look more natural by making sure one patch goes right up to the edge of the base - I used it here and was happier with his base

STILL WORKING ON: Banners for all my units, I've tried hand-painting banners and inking the black and white ones...but they all look a bit rubbish. Might just colour print some and repaint the edge of the banners green to match the army!

STILL TO DO: I've been slack! I'm now down 250 points, so next month I'll need to do a lot to catch up (250+200=450 points!)...but I have a cunning plan!

Hi there! I'm quite late to this party, but hope its ok for me to jump in til the end :)

I've been painting 750 points of Lizards for the Warhammer Doubles this year since aroud Jan (plus 750 points of DElves for the other half) - 1500 points in around 5 months.

I have other Lizard bits I'd like to finish off and think this is a great way to give me motivation - and has certainly provided me with ample inspiration for future projects!

First off, I'd like to get 200 pts done a month.

Here are some pics of the pieces I finished for the Doubles -

And here is my Baby Steg :)

This month I would like to paint up 4 Terradons.

Since I've already painted up a 750 point army I'll include the highs and lows:

Highs - The Steg and the Hero I really enjoyed, I also really got my teeth into a unit of 15 Skinks (not pictured).

Lows - Painting scales on 20 Saurus >.< So much hand cramp!

The scouts have returned! After several long months without any tidings from the afflicted border, finally news have arrived. And it is grave news indeed. All the scouts have the same tale to tell - where once there were lush hillsides with orchards, pastures, fields and thriving villiages, now everything is barren, deserted of all life. Not even ruins remain, only the odd nondescript belonging scattered amidst the dust and sand.

But that does not mean that the region is empty. It is a telling sign that only six scouts have returned. Over a dozen set out half a year ago, and no one dares hope that any of the missing will return. That even six remain alive and safely returned is a tale in itself. When asked how it came to be, they all shiver and turn silent. Only one of them will speak of the events that occured since they last set out from Wissenburg, an aged hunter named Drek, though he claims his story is simliar to the others. He says he and his small band of huntsmen were scouting for signs of the missing villagers, the rumored enemies and strange sightings, or even just some trace of the other scouting parties or previously sent messengers and couriers, when a mist setteled upon them. Experienced rangers though they were, they still got separated in the strange gloom, and soon Drek was lost, detached from friends and the world in large. Soon he heard the agonizing screams of dying men, his friends, sometimes close by, sometimes from afar, and strange shapes began to move just outside his field of vision, tantalizing, always dissappearing as soon as he tried to focus on them.

None can tell for how long he endured in that fearful mist, but he had allready reconciled himself with his destiny when out of the gray there came a piercing shriek and a big, black bird came diving in from above. Startled to see a living creature in these dead lands, Drek was no less surprised as suddenly a grey, cloaked figure seemed to materialise out of nowhere. He told Drek to follow, and after a brisk march lasting no longer than one turn of the hourglass Drek could see that the mist was lifting. Once clear of haze Drek saw that they had arrived at a small campstite where two other scouts resided by the fire. The cloaked stranger then disappeared into the mist on another three treks, each time returning with another scout in tow. Only then would he stop to introduce himself as Aldebrand, Wizard of the Grey Order of the Colleges of Magic.

The grey wizards, lonely travelers often seen with suspicious eyes. The mage had rescued them, still Dek and his friends would remain on their guard all the way back to the provincial capital, never quite trusting the cloaked man with the pointy hat and gnarled staff. Where did he come from? How could he appear just like that when all hope was gone? And where did the bird with the piercing shriek go? Come to think of, neither Drek nor any of the other scouts can recall both the wizard and the bird being present at the same time...

UNIT: Wizard of the Grey Order, (lvl 2 staff of power), 6 archers

BUILD/CONVERSION: Archers straight out of the box. wizard is mainly bits form the mage kit, staff top from wood elf dryad, pipe from old dwarf kit. Pretty straight forward , just some repositioning and gap-filling with GS.

STILL TO DO: All the other colleges of magic :)

Gotta love the Led Zeppelin symbol on your infantry's drum! It reminds me of the good old days when GW and humour went together! (anyone remember the 5th edition rulebook with the small comic vignettes at the bottom of the pages?)

Great work everybody, you're putting up a hell of a show!

Malorian's Lizardmen:

Dice roll: 1

Malorian 1: stegadon (235)
Malorian 2: stegadon, two engine of the gods, Chakax (1280) (so Malorian 2 should be done with jokers now)

Highs: Getting a ton of points painted so I don't have a tring of jokers.

Lows: Having a blizzard make me loss a week of painting so I failed in operation Penta-steg, but at least I had a smashed Chakax sitting around so I had something to paint. Plus those howdas are a bloody paint to paint... so many tight angles... and on the EotGs there is so much detail...

Next up: 14 saurus cav, 3 terradons, a salamander, and a slann

(Sorry, the flash kinda made Chakax a ball of white...)

Time for some comments!

As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 2000 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 1000 points/month).

No small feat paintin 2000 pts a month :)

@Ego Ninja: Gotta love that captain-model. Beautiful sculpt, and your painting does it justice. I'm fond o fth dark red blood, looks very realistic. The red on the tirster looks good too – will be interesting to see even better pics of it.

@EmperorNorton: Considering the huge amount of minis you produce one month with a joker is hardly something you need to regret! Looking forward to see your armies based and done!

@Matrim_Cauthon: I know what you mean by disliking painting cavalry – you can only paint so many horses before getting sick of it. Still, very nice unit and standard bearer, great browns on the horses. Nice scaled cloak on the CO rider aswell.

@Jim: Partridge looks awsome – let us know how it fairs in your games :)

@ Fabius Bile: Very, very, very nice musician! I love the bottle and the way you put the drumsticks in one hand. That fire wizard looks really cool as well – like he is bursting into flames.

@Calibretto; So, the headless horseman got a head for his horse at last :) Nice painting great attention to the legs of the horse!

@8bitMummies: See you in the next tale then?

@Braad: Sounds like you have other things to keep you occupied – in my experience moving to a new place really takes more time than you can imagine. Though nowadays I've beome pretty good at it, having moved to new places about ten times in half as many years …

@Inquisitor Pariah: Nice basing – the placing of the static grass looks good.

@Gargobot: Greens, browns, skin tones and metalics look really good. I still think they could benefit from at bit dirtier/darker red, but over all really splendid job on the flaggies!

@someone2040: Blood Angels? Is that the rumored ”new race” for WHFB... :)

@Vaiuri: Vary nice start on a lizzie army. I like the muted skin tones and the love you've given the bases. Looking forward to see mote of this!

@Dakkapantz: Plenty sounds nice!

@Dark Apostle: Come on, you can do better than that! You call that an army? Where are all the awsome blocks of state troops? And what about the unit of knights? Time to get on with the core choises – if you'd wanted an army with low model count, don't you think Warriors of chaos would have been a much better choice?

PAINTING: I STILL HATE PAINTING YELLOW AND HORSES!

@Krzyek: So, I can see why Knights of the blazing sun would be the obvious choice then :p
Still a nice unit, the only thing that looks a bit out o place is the eight pointed star on the banner - I guess it's supposed to be a sun, but maybe you could replace the skull with a ”face” (green stuff) to make it look less like a chaos symbol?

@Desert rain: A very good-looking unit – the gems in particular look realy spiffy.

@Doi: What? You deny me pictures of gorgeous ogres this month? Better have something really good to show next month...

@Malorian: 4 stegadons? 4! Enough said. But I really expected 5...

@Joseph Vintila: Very good, I like the different hues of purple. But maybe it still looks a bit too much like an elf?

Comment time, not that many left of us now ;)

Ego Ninja (empire): Really cool model, and a very nice paintjob.

Ego Ninja (daemons): Nice work, I like the tone of the red colour.

Matrim_Cauthon (empire): Good work on the knights, I like the metal very much. The stanradrd bearer is awesome.

Matrim_Cauthon (dark elves): Nice knights, and congratulation for making it!

Jim: I like the natural colours you've used on them, and the bird is great.

Fabius Bile: Nice unit, both painting- and conversion wise. I'm not a big fan of the wizard though, I think he needs something to break up the yellow.

Calibretto: Really nice work, and a great model.

Inquisitor Pariah: Good job, I really like you colour scheme, and the base is nice. The static grass tip you got worked really well.

Gargobot: Nice work, the skin is really good.

Vaiuri: Welcome to the tale, better late then never ;) I really like the colours on your lizardmen, great job on them!

Dark Apostle: Great work on the grey wizard, I really like him. The archers are nice too.

Krzyek: Nice work, and very striking colours.

Malorian: 4 stegs in a month!?! They look really nice too. I'd struggle to do one in 3...

Joseph Vintila: Really nice dragon, makes me look forward to paint my own

First of all my apologies for not posting at all last month!

I have enough this month though to get me back on track.

Painting done: Arch Lector on War Altar with heavy armour and great weapon (237), 6 Knights with banner and musician (162) and 24 Great Swords with full command (270)
Total: 669 points
Painted so far: 1137+669=1806points!

Not much to say about the painting, same standard stuff as usual. On to the pictures.

I think you need to learn and play with The Count since the skull clearly has 7 rays ;). Recently I have found a piece of artwork from WAR Online that resembles the one on the standard.

Comments!

Ego ninja: I like the subtle tones of the cloth and his sleeve. Sad to see another bloddthirster enter the world though ;)

Matrim_Cauthon: The knights look nice but that character is very good. Now that I'm used to the new models those old DE knights look kinda funny. Hope you painted them before you put the shield on ;)

Jim: The archer picture is a bit blurry so it's hard to say, but the mage looks nice and bright (I know using white can be a pain).

Fabius Bile: I don't know... that mix of colors just says circus to me...

Calibretto: The green and silver is really going to make him pop on the battle field.

Inquisitor Pariah: Cool looking model, but doesn't seem dark enough for an assassin.

Gargobot: I really like the conversion work you've done here. The far left one just looks plain crazy ;)

Vaiuri: Very nice work. I just painted Chakax this month as well and I have to say I like the look of yours much better. Steg looks great too.

Dark apostle: Great conversion. Until I read your post I could have sworn he was from another range.

Krzyek: You might hate painting yellow but keep it up because they are looking great!

Desert Rain: Why are they boring to paint? All the same pose? Well they certainly turned up well detailed and looking just like they should.

Joseph Vintila: Good idea for a slaanesh lord, but that shield is begging for the mark of slaanesh to be put on it :)

Tonyflow: That's a ton of painting for 1 month! Well done.

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: I never get tired of seeing wyverns, and that simple conversion keeps it nice and fresh.

A couple of pics of my converted Terradons - its dawned on me I'm a little behind on these guys, planning on getting them undercoated tonight then I need to think about colours.

I have a lot of green in this army already and am loathe to do these guys green too - any ideas on a natural but unusual colour scheme for my Terries? The Skinks will stay green/turquoise - so its the birds themselves I'm stuck on :S

Comments so far!

Ego Ninja: Beautiful captain, I love the use of muted, natural colours, it makes the blue really stand out – very nice 

Matrim: Despite your dislike for painting cav, they are looking great! It looks like you enjoyed painting the BSB.

Jim: I LOVE the partridge! I’m planning an Empire army for 8th ed, and recently got a box of Huntsmen. After some dirty looks form my BF I didn’t use the partridge arm – your model has made me rebel – I’ll be putting it in my second archer unit ;)

Calibretto: I really like it when people paint different horse colours other than just brown/black etc… Your Bay horse is lovely, I like the black on the legs and the white socks! What colour did you use on the hooves? Looks a bit dark to be Bleached Bone…

Pariah: Your assassin looks happy with his job! ^^ But I agree that he might be a bit bright to be sneaking about.

Gargobot: Very nice, neat paint job, I’m impressed. I like the splash of red on the Flagellants, see too many of these guys just brown and dull. Can I ask you how you did the bases? Looks simple, but I really, really struggle with basing models properly and yours are just what I would like to go for.

Krzyek: Congrats on finishing your army! :D Your yellow is great – nice and solid, still see a lot of watery yellows about and yours is very good.

Dark Apostle: Beautiful, I love the smooth blending on your captain, very nice indeed.

Fabius: Boozy drummer is great ^^ You’ve inspired me to do a bright Empire army for 8th ed, think I’ll be going Ostermark!

Tony: Good work on the War Altar – do you use paper or foil for your pennants?

Desert Rain: I’m not a fan of these models but you’ve done a very nice job – especially the gems, something I really struggle to get right! Great work!

Malorian: I feel your pain on the howdahs, I’ve only painted one of my Stegs so far and am draddeading the other 2 (yes, I’m cheese, but I’ve never actually fielded all 3, honest!).
Have you stuck the howdahs on or left them removable? After realizing what a pain they would be to transport I constructed my Baby Steg howdah in bits – the front platform, and the back square separate and didn’t glue them to the Steg. I drilled into one of the 4 pins that fix the 2 platforms onto the Steg and inserted a bit of brass rod – about an inch or 2 is enough – then drilled into the Steg where the howda pin rests, and wah-lah! The pin (glued into the howda) is just long enough to keep the 2 howdah pieces stable on the model but easy enough to remove for transporting. It also makes it much easier to paint 

Joseph: I like the skin tone on your dragonlord, very ‘evil’.

Warlord: Great scenic base for your big fella! Looks like you had a lot of fun on this, especially busting up that poor Empire dude! 

The newer ones are all glued together, but in the older metal ones the howda isnt' attached.

I transport both types in a shoe box (classy I know) and the plastic one is fine whereas having the metal howda come off makes it less top heavy.

First off i have to say i was surprised (but pleased) to see so many Empite armies still in it! Good job guys!

Ego Ninja (Empire)- I like the captain, love the blood on the cloth. I would have expected a pool of blood from the orc head though.

Ego Ninja (Demons)- Was about to comment that he looked flat but then i saw your comment. Ive had a hard time photographing red myself. Looks solid otherwise though.

Matrim_Cauthon (Empire)- I like the colorful knights and BSB, the BSBs horse head almost looks like its glowing.

Matrim_Cauthon (Dark Elves)- Great paint job on what are-to me-ugly models. I particularly like the musician but the sorceress's skin looks unfinished.

Jim- I really like the huntsman, the muted colors fit them well. The white bows look a little too white to me though. The wizard is great.

Fabius Bile-The paint job is solid, i like the drinking muso, theyre a little too colorful for my tastes though. The wizard is fascinating though, he almost glows though i think you need to repaint his base. Minor nitpick though.

8butMummies-Sorry to see you go but certainly understand. Hope to see you back next time!

Inquisitor Pariah- Nice solid assassin, i like the rocks on the base.

Gargobot-Lovely skin tone, the dark green is very nice as well. The only thing thats a bit lackluster is the red, great job overall!

Vaiuri-Welcome to the Tale! Your Hero turned out very nicely. I really like the howdah on your steg, the stone looks great.

Dark Apostle- Great conversion and great paint job, The raven addition is a nice touch. The huntsman look quite good as well though the leftmost ones beard appears to be on fire.

Kryzek- Nice knights, i like the freehand designs, the gold looks flat though.

Desert Rain-The pelts are nice, the dark metal really pops as well.

Malorian-Wow thats a lot of dinosaur. I love your Chakax but cant say im crazy about the orange/black/yellow combo on the stegadons. Probably because theres no yellow on the mass that is the stegadon. The gates really stand out though, and you painted in a month what would have taken me 5 so congrats are in order!

Joseph Vintila-I like the overall look, the purple really stands out. Is your lord a corrupted high elf?

Tony Flow- Good stuff, i especially like the griffon on the war altar and the Greatsword banner. The worn, oxidized metal on the knights is pretty cool as well

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull- Quite nice i must say, i like the wyverns scales! The brown on the wings is a bit flat though.

Replying to comments to me-

Dark Apostle-Indeed the horse's head returned from the depths! Thanks for the compliment, i really wanted his horse to stand out.

Desert Rain- Thanks a lot, theres a lot you can do with the model!

Malorian- I tried highlighting a bit higher on this model to get just that effect, thanks!

Vidpui-Have you considered a yellow ochre for the terradons? It would stand out from the skinks without looking totally out of place. Thanks for the comments on the horse, I figured being a character (and my general for now) he should have a cool looking horse. I considered a palamino for a while but the bay won me over. The hooves are P3 Menoth Base with more P3 Menoth White Highlight as i went to the top of the hooves. Then i just took really watered down P3 Umbral Umber (dark brown) and painted some vertical striping. Wasnt sure how it would turn out but i liked it.

gray would be pretty cool as well.. and easy to paint!
i rolled a die for a guy's commission one time after i had 6 colors picked and i ended up on a gray slann with a dark red skink on his palanquin. looked pretty swift if i do say so myself...

just checking in guys.. everything is looking awesome up to now, keep it up!!
i myself haven't even been able to look at a brush twice since i left.. and school is in 3 weeks :( bummer.
anyway.. keep kickin butt and taking names!

Calibretto - I'm quite liking the idea of yellow for the Terries. The 'big stuff' in my army is quite bright, red Stegs and a cream carnosaur. I painted my Cold Ones a bronzy/yellow with dark scales, so I'm liking the idea of middle sized beasts being warm yellows/oranges.

Dwarfhold - Grey would be very natural I think, which suits my painting style perfectly :D

Maybe yellow bellies with a darker top?

You've given me a lot to think about, thanks guys ;)

Regrettably, it's another Joker for me, I'm afraid. That brings my Joker total up to six. :cries:

Heaven knows how I'll finish off the army with only three months left, I'm finding it hard enough to do 200pts a month, let alone 400pts. But I'm willing to give it a try.

@Ego Ninja - I love that figure. Great to see ti painted up so nicely. Impressive thirster too.

@Matrim_Cauthon - oooh, heavy cavalry lovliness. Nice knights, and the battle standard looks great.

@Jim - awww, poor little partridge. Skewered and ready for the barby. Great models though. Nicely painted with lots of character. Cool book scribblings.

@Fabius Bile - wow! that bright wizard is fantastic. Flame on! And I love the musician - great conversion full of character.

@Calibretto - really nice, clean painting. Love the horse's markings. And the headswap works well.

@Inquisitor Pariah - that's a blood bowl figure isn't it? Cool. Nice to see an assassin bucking the "must wear black" trend.

@Gargobot - nice flagellants. Looking suitably spikey and dangerous and a nice clean paint job too.

@Vaiuri - welcome aboard. your first post and you're already beating me in points! Great job on those lizardmen - lovely painting.

@Dark Apostle - Holy cow, dude! You continue to blow my mind with awesomeness. That grey wizard is fantastic. What a brilliant little conversion - really subtle and amazingly effective. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us next month. And you're right - where are the blocks of infantry?! Gotta bite the bullet some time.

@Krzyek - well, you may hate painting yellow and horses but you've done a brilliant job.

@Desert Rain - looking really good. Love the pelts. Let's have an army shot!

@Malorian - you are insane, sir, for even attempting pentasteg. Great looking models though.

@Joseph Vintila - sweet Lord. Looks cool and the elf figure works well as a Slaanesh Lord.

@TonyFlow - great looking models. Love the colour scheme on the knights - I think bronze looks more Empire-y.

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - congratulations on passing 2000pts! Suitably impressive model for the occasion. Nice job.

Sorry it's late, didn't get these finished till just over a week into the month and this is the first chance I've had to do anything other than feverishly paint!

ARMY: Orcs and Goblins

DICE ROLL: 4

UNIT: 25 Orc Boys with shields and full command.

CONVERSIONS : Nothing at all, though the guy on the left of the front rank is made from the warboss box. I'm just using him as the units boss though.

PAINTING: Really simple, I had to have these ready of the first part of quite a lot I had to paint for a tournament the weekend just gone so they were speed painted. Base coated and then washed mostly with badab black bar the skin which is dark green ink and the odd bit I kept light.

STILL TO DO: They still need highlighting which I will come back and do at some point. They're done for now though.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I got another big block of boys out of the way which is nice. That was the biggest block I had to do out of the way. I got really sick of painting these by the end though and I'm not massively pleased with how they came out as they were rushed, but they'll do. Also they sucked at the tourny. Just died a lot, that may be me more than them though!

POINTS: 180

TOTAL POINTS: 1648

WHAT's NEXT: Well in preperation for the tournament I also got a doom diver and a rock lobba done and a unit of 10 arrer boys half done (so that they were 3 colours but not much else, 2 of them are done but the others need some work). So that'll be coming next month if I finish the arrer boys. I need to paint the scenic doom diver goblin on the flying stand as well.

And yes that is a loo roll in the background, my bathroom has the best light in the house (still rubbish) and by the time I noticed it was dark outside so there you go. Call it a crude orcy dwelling.

Little work in progress for me, I'm almost done painting my saurus cav (10 down 4 to go) but at this point I'm getting fairly tired of them...

Also annoying that their scales are done a lot different then the saurus on foot or even the characters.

Seems like the more elite the saurus you are the crappier the scales you have :wtf:

I have done a bit more work on the assassin as suggested by Malorian, hopefully he stands out a little more now (even if the photo's are...meh). I repainted the inside of his cloak and hood black and ran a white line around the edges to make it look at bit more fancy.

I'm also thinking of black edging the bases instead of having them grey...I think it might make the army pop out a little more

My WIP for next month:

Another Morathi! I've had to resculpt her thighs because I cut them off back in the mists of time (I think I wanted a foot version). One thing though - what a horrible model to put together! I had only just chuckled at one of my friends when I watched him struggle with the old metal landraider crusader...Karma I guess!

Comments

Ego Ninja - Really nice cream you've got going there, like the blood effects of the cloth the hero is carrying too

Jim - Excellent basing - the different grades of sand make it look very natural

Fabius Bile - I never would have though to use purple on the scheme and it really works! I especially like the drunken musician.

Dark Apostle - Love the grey on your wizard, it really reminds me of a picture of Gandelf from the front of a copy of Lord of the Rings I have on my bookshelf

Krzyek - I like your non-gunmetal knights....so much I'm going to steal that idea for my own!

Desert Rain - Those are really nice classic High Elves...You're tempting me to break out my old army and give them a going over

Malorian - Thats a lot of impact hits! You've matched up the old and new models well

TonyFlow - Still loving the touches of green you have on your (very large) army

nkicik - Good job on finishing the block...doing those last few models can be quite demoralising

I agree, much better :)

I also think you're right about the bases, perhaps try Catachan Green? I notice you're using a bit of green on the model, a dark green base edge will tie it in nicely I think. Give it a go and see what you think :)

May I present the ruler of his great savage orc clan, zor KAZUrRaA himself, level 4 great shaman, with Nibbla’s ‘itty ring, Collar of Zorga, 2 x dispel magic scroll, with his bodyguard of 15 savage orc arrer boyz, full command, standard bearer, represented by 2 extra musician models and the flag behind the throne on a almost fullgrown brontosaurus, weighting in around 1075 points.

I'm haven't participated as much in the TOFP as I hoped I would, but a thumbs up to all people painting beautiful models and showed them here.
To everyone still painting in the Tale, keep it up!

Once again im comming in late with a model thats still not completly finished.

This is my Exalted Hero, with Mark of Slaanesh, shield and riding a Steed of Slaanesh, for a total of 145pts.

Dice roll: 1

The model is just a Chaos Knight mounted on a High Elf White Lion. Shoulder pads from marauder and HE Lion Charioteres, and the shield from a skeleton set.

Highs and lows;
- I do like how easy the model fitted onto the lion, basically no conversions needed. However the very upright pose of the knight dont match the 'running almost at the speed of sound'-pose of the lion. Then again possibly a slaanesh hero might be arrogant enough to do just that.
- The skulls on his armour (knee pads, 1 shoulder pad and a small skull on the shield) did fit together quite nicely imo.
- Not happy with the colour scheme of the armour, the metal/silver lining on the plain black didnt stand out the way i was hoping.
- The fur on the lion turned out ok, but not great, may have to get some more highlights on it.
- The skin of the lion kinda looks like a granite stone

The blitz removed basically all of the shades of white/bleach on the skulls, but im probably to lazy to take another photo tomorrow when the lighting conditions are better.

Paiah: light brown, deffo! Is that Graveyard Earth? A paint to get it on solid, recommend 2-3 thin coats, or go over one coat of Khemri Brown. Or use Khemri Brown... :D

PS - update on my side, I HATE the Terradons, horrible models who refuse to stay in one piece :( I've started a couple of Razordons too to make myslef feel better.

75% done - 4 Terries with champ (150 pts? Dont have my book on me)

50% done - 2 Razordons (150 pts)

I've also gotten a bit distracted by Empire :S So I've put about 500 points of these guys together and started on the Ostermark colour tests.

Morglum Necksnapper: What does that actually count as on the field? A shaman and a unit of savage orcs? Looks cool :)

Giledan: Nice conversion. Fur looks fine to me, and I agree some mroe highlights on the rider would help a lot. Right now the steed is stealing the spotlight from the exalted ;)

@Malorian, for the brontosaurus I use slightly customised rules of the Forgeworld warmammoth, see my projectlog for details.

Quick Post with some recent painting after missing the past couple of months :(

Army: Empire (there seems to be hundreds of them here. Who knew they were so popular!)

This month: 5 Outriders on barded steeds (115) & a steam tank (300)= 415+1888 = 2303!
(So should allow me to buy back one of my jokers :), only one left to buy back! And only ~ 2 months of stuff to paint before the beastmen begin :))

Dice Roll 5

Dark Apostle: I love the gandalf and the raven. How do you get such a clean white? As aside from ~5 really thin layers it never really works for me.

Kryzek: Love the knights but like above how do you get such a clean yellow. As I couldn't get a bright yellow for my outriders so I settled for a darker on on the outriders.

Morglum: That is brilliant! Where did you find the Brontasauraus?

Malorian: There is something truly freaky about those poison arrow frog style stegs! But they do look fine. Looking forward to a whoel army shot of the lizards to see the tropical colour spread.

Thanks for the advice from this thread on basing. I've been trying to do better bases. Though I don't think I'll go back and do all the previous ones... 200+ is just too many!

I'm gonna have to joker this month, been a slack fulla. Next month though, I'll be back on track.

KHolbourn: Looks like those outriders could use a wash, but I like the yellow striping and the fact that you made each one different.

Looking forward to seeing your beastmen :)

ARMY: Empire (1000pt)

Units: 2 snipers, 5 flagellants

Painting: Tried the darker skin tones on the new flagellant models I picked up, but don't like it so much. Snipers are painted to match my older color scheme.

Conversions, new hochland long rifles added to older handgunner models

Pts This Month: 110

Total Points: 732

Highs - got a few more models painted - I hate not finishing challenges and now in big games there is no more sniper proxying as I have 3 painted up.

Lows - green stuff is harder to finish nicely than I would like kit to be. Will have to work on my photo set-up.

Just a note that I'm jokering this month. The baby's a lot better but I still don't have a lot of energy for painting things.

Well, I'll be out of town for a few days and I'd hoped to get this out of the way first. That's why I'm a little impatient.

There, I made the thread (I'm sure no one minds).

Braad just send me your graph when it is ready and I'll add it.

I know I don't mind.

Thanks for sorting it out and sorry for letting you guys down and not getting the thread up on time.

You haven't let us down at all. Everyone knows that your life has become really hectic since part way through the last Tale and understands that sometimes you can't do things straight away. If someone else needs to start a thread some months it doesn't make any difference. Do what you can and those of us with more time can finish the rest. On that note, I'll send you a PM shortly about helping out with the next TOFP.

On another note, I didn't realise it was woodwork you taught before you became Head Teacher. It explains how you are such a deft hand at terrain like that High Elf castle :p.
