The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2009-2010

Month 10

It's all down hill from here.

All the best,

This is the thread on which you post your work for month TEN. (The work you have done in the month of MAY).

Please make only one post (for each army) in the first week.

Your post should include:

1) The description and points of the unit. AND YOUR TOTAL POINTS SO FAR.
2) Any additional information you care to share with us about your painting.
3) A Dice roll. (Explained below)
4) Up to six photographs of your months work and the army so far.

The dice role.

With over 250 painters in this years Fantasy tale it would be impossible to try to comment on everyones work. (Although there are some who will try!) We considered splitting into army factions which would have left every one only posting on others painting the same army. Someone came up with the great idea of dicing for it. So you throw a dice and record the score. You then try and post comment on everyone who has the same dice roll as you. In return you can expect comment form all of them. This way each month we will all be commenting on a random selection of other painters work.
(Note: this does not stop anyone posting anything they like about anyones work regardless of the numbers rolled!)

A Word on using photographs

You can use up to six photographs (the maximum allowed in a post by warseer). To show us your months painting and the 'army' so far. The best size for showing your work is 640x480 (It can be smaller or you can use ‘thumbs’ which link to bigger pictures but they must not be bigger or it takes too long for the pages to load). The best thing to do is to resize them, wherever you are hosting your images, and then drag and drop the ‘img code’ directly into the text.

This month (MAY) WIP Thread.

AFTER THE FIRST WEEK ... This thread will become the 'normal' ... comment and crit’ of others work, Work In Progress (WIP) pictures of your work as it develops, how you are getting on, seeking advice and encouragement for your ideas and your painting and generally chatting about the project, life and the cosmos.

However, please continue to only post your work for the first week. This is to give everyone a chance to post up their finished work before it gets lost amongst a sea of chat and WIP shots.

Thanks again to everyone who has signed up for this madness.

If you have not signed up yet…

If you have not signed up yet and would like to join us you are not to late.
Just post on this thread which army and how many points you intend to paint and then crack on.
Anything you post this month will count for last months painting.
(Although you will have to push on and paint something for next month to catch us up).

If you can not post anything this month …

DO NOT PANIC! … use a joker.
Busy lives calm down again, enthusiasm returns, time presents itself.
When it does 'push hard and 'buy back' your joker by painting extra. If your struggling post and say so. (don't just slip quietly away) You will be amazed by the posts of encouragement and support which come from your fellow painters eager to see you successfully complete this project. Most importantly ... 'Stick with it' ... The prize of getting your stuff painted remains worth all the effort.

What is it all about?

Do you want to paint a 2000 point army in the next 12 months?
Do you want to meet a great bunch, with the same goal who will encourage and support you throughout the process?
Can you do the same in return?
Are you completely bonkers?
Then you have come to the right place!

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2009 and finishing with their last post on the last day of July 2010.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys (and Infants!)

Because this is harder than you would think ... This year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month we have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).
I have also added a list for the 'Infants' or Warmaster painters.

The Painters: (Thanks as always to Braad!)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. Write much as you like. We love background. write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Thanks to Malorian for starting the Thread. (I hope Braad will send you his list to drop in the first post)
Sorry I was late. (again)

But I have not forgotten you completely. Life has just got a bit hectic for me to keep up with this. In the last two years I have gone from 'woodwork teacher' to Assistant head to Deputy head to Head teacher. As The responsibility has increased the time I have for toy soldiers has decreased. So I apologise to everyone if it seems I have abandoned you. I do still visit the threads regularly and am delighted that others have stepped up to keep things running and even more delighted to see those of you who have been able to stick with it producing such wonderful armies.

I hope to have more time as things continue to settle down at work and I plan and I hope to be able to get back into the Tale of painters properly next year. However I would really appreciate the help and support of others (Just as folks have helped me out this year) So it does not all crumble if my life does not get any easier.

It is not long until I will need to think about starting the thread for folks to sign up for next year. So if you were planning to get involved anyway and you would like to get more involved and help me to keep the Tale of Fantasy Painters going then please drop me a PM.

My apologies and thanks again to everyone for making this year a success despite my pathetic performance.

ARMY: Middenheim

UNIT: 10 Knights of the Inner Circle, Order of the White Wolf, including full command

PAINTING: Nothing special.

BASING: Still to do.

STILL TO DO: Some details on the horses to make the armor a little more interesting.

LOWS: The knights look like muppets (but I think it's mostly the sculpts that are to blame).

HIGHS: That's the last of the knights! No more warponies to paint!

(I'll try to take some better pictures in a couple of days...)

03-06-2010, 08:00
ARMY: Middenland

UNITS: Ar-Ulric (counts as Archlector) and a wizard

PAINTING: Same as usual.

BASING: Still to do.

STILL TO DO: Nothing (aside from basing, that is).

LOWS: Again a very low model count. Not finding the parts for the War Altar I had wanted to build for Ar-Ulric to ride on.

HIGHS: Coming close to finishing both armies and getting back on track after last month.

Inquisitor Pariah

ARMY: Dark Elves

UNITS: High Sorceress on Dark Pegasus (310) and 7 Witch elves (to add to the existing unit) (70)

PAINTING: I'm happy with the painting on the peg because (unlike the Dark Riders horses) I painted it up from a dark grey rather than a black.

BASING: I repainted the edge of every base dark green...I think it works better

STILL TO DO: Static grass the Witch Elves bases

LOWS: I had to do the Sorceress' face again after some black ink got on it and made it look like she had a 5 o'clock shadow

HIGHS: The hooves of the pegasus

High Sorceress:

Witch Elves

It took me more than a year to finish painting my savage orc arrer boyz. I arranged them in 5 units of 16 boyz. Each unit comes with a standard, a boss and a level 1 savage orc shaman. One unit, including the shaman is 240 points. So the total for these 5 units is 1200 points.

I also finished the boarboyz I was working on. The initial plan was to make a unit of ten. But I've mixed them with the unit of seven and the lone shaman on boar I already painted. Now there are two units of nine.
This unit of 8 boar boyz with full command plus a level 2 shaman, with Waaagh! paint and a dispel magic scroll is 389 points.

Morglum Necksnapper

This unit has full command also and is 263 points.

Morglum Necksnapper
04-06-2010, 10:21
And finally I added 8 stone trolls to the savage orc horde. Total 480 points. The total for the whole army until now is 4697 points. As Warhammer 8th Edition is on it's way, I won't bother slicing the 2 armies up anymore, as I have no idea how the pointcost and army options will work yet. But my plan is to make two 3000 points savage orc armies.

ARMY: Warriors of Chaos

UNITS: Spawn of Slaanesh (75) 2 Warriors (50) 7 Warhounds (42)

STILL TO DO: Bases and more highlights on the warriors

05-06-2010, 09:48
ARMY: Hochland Empire

UNIT: 14 Swordsmen to add to existing 10 men unit plus Captain with battle standard

CONVERSIONS : Straight out of the box...except the shields which are from the Bretonnian range as I wanted a plain shield I could paint onto

PAINTING: Pretty standard stuff on the swordsmen...attempted some freehand work on the battle standard, copying a design from the Empire heraldry book. Think it looks ok.

STILL TO DO: I need to paint some design or motif onto the shields once I think of something

HIGHS AND LOWS: Painting lots of state troops in one go was not as soul destroying as I feared!...I've had the standard bear in my its box for years and years so it was nice to finally dust him off and get him painted

WHAT's NEXT: A unit of great swords

Unfortunately I'll be dropping out of the tale - I'm taking a break from the hobby and don't know when I'll find time nor motivation to pick it up again. It would have been nice to complete the tale, but that's how it is. Good luck to everyone and thanks for all comments and suggestions during the last 10 months. /DA

06-06-2010, 11:16
First up, I'm sorry to see you go Dark :( But I know how it is, hope to see you back for the next tale?

Secondly, I've been horribly tardy in my painting the last 2 weeks, mainly due to being very ill :( Still, my plans should make up for it through June!

ARMY: Lizardmen

UNITS: 4 Terradons with Brave, 2 Razordons

CONVERSIONS: The Terradon crew have all been messed with, some are the metal crew from the last Stegadon. All the Terradons have been re-drilled to fit onto brass rod, flying stands and I dont get on. One Terradon is clutching a rock as he flies, another has landed to pick up a rock. The Razordons are as is, other than a bit of plasticard on the bases.

PAINTING: Terradons were undercoated in Scorched Brown then given a coat of 50:50 Badab Black: Devlan Mud wash. The dark areas were then re-highlighted with Sc Brown with a bit of Snakebite as a final highlight to pick out details. The pale skin tone was Snakebite with the same 50:50 wash followed by the base again and adding Foundation Tausept Ochre to brighten.

Skinks are simply Hawk Turquiose up to Camo green on the flesh, Hk Tq up to Bleached Bone on the scales.

All claws/teeth picked out in Graveyard Earth then highlighted with mixes on larger parts with Bleached Bone.

Razordons are Foundation Light Green (the name escapes me) with Camo Green and Bleached Bone to highlight. Scales/spines went from Black to Bleached Bone.

STILL TO DO: Gold and head-crests on the Terradon Skinks. Razordon Skink Crew, Gold on Razors and Bases for all.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I enjoyed the Razordons but pretty much had to drag a brush over everything else. I think I'm trying to cut to omany corners by using Foundation Paints and the washes and its really making me unhappy. I need to slow down and stay away from these products for the next models I do, see if it makes me any happier.

POINTS: 130 + 150

TOTAL POINTS: Since I only started last month but have been with you in spirit since Jan, I'll post points for the last 6 months. 1,440

STILL TO DO: 3 Krox, the Shields on an extra rank of Saurs I'm adding to an old 6th Ed unit, 2 more Stegs and some random Characters. Next month I will mostly be finishing off what I started this month and painting the Kroxigor I put together (and maimed myself with) this week.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/5880/dsc00425i.th.jpg (http://img59.imageshack.us/i/dsc00425i.jpg/)

This is one of a pair of Razors, still need to do the gold armour, his eyes and the bases for the two.

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5196/dsc00422w.th.jpg (http://img69.imageshack.us/i/dsc00422w.jpg/)

This is one of the 4 Terradons. I dont like these models at all, I'll be happy just to get them finished and out of the way! The Skinks need a bit of black lining and their Gold doing, then the bases then finished \o/

06-06-2010, 11:16
Here is an army shot of everything finished or un-damaged enough to make it into my army ^^

http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/6227/dsc00431gj.th.jpg (http://img594.imageshack.us/i/dsc00431gj.jpg/)

2x 20 Saurus with Spears and FC (the unit on the right is the old 6th ed unit I've added a column onto - my painting hasnt changed much over the years!).

http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/7476/dsc00433dc.th.jpg (http://img686.imageshack.us/i/dsc00433dc.jpg/)

2x 10 Skinks with Blowpipes

1x Baby Steg

6x Cold One Riders, FC (these are converted Kroot I used as Dark Elf Cold One Knights in this years WH Doubles. I liked the models so much I'll be including them in my Lizards from now on, I dont think they look too out of place :D)

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/6954/dsc00434w.th.jpg (http://img63.imageshack.us/i/dsc00434w.jpg/)

4x Terradons with Brave

1 Saurus Scar Vet with Burning Blade, Maiming Shield and Light Armour

1 Skink Priest, Level 2, 50 points of whistles and bells (another Kroot that made it from my Doubles Dark Elves!)

Finally, add to that my Razors, the Krox and some Salamanders I need to rebase and tart up, there's my Lizardman army! Hope you like it!

06-06-2010, 11:56
Thought I'd sneak my Empire in here as well - another reason my Lizards are a little behind schedule!

http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/6227/dsc00441ei.th.jpg (http://img691.imageshack.us/i/dsc00441ei.jpg/)

Pistollier, I've been trying out the Ostermark colour scheme on these guys and a unit of Huntsmen.

I'm battling with the concept of doing a 'realistic' and 'fluffy' Empire army (painting and model wise). Chosing Ostermark has made this even more difficult for me since purple isnt a colour that is easy to get hold of, nor is Ostermark a wealthy province. In the end I figured the state troops uniforms would probably still include purple, but maybe a different (cheaper) shade. I tried making a murky purple on the Huntsmen and hated it :( I think I may have to sack off the purple issue for the sake of my sanity and just go for a lovely looking army.

Any ideas/hints would be great!

http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1023/dsc00435sj.th.jpg (http://img269.imageshack.us/i/dsc00435sj.jpg/)

Test Warrior Priest - I bought this fella as a test to decide if I would be happy painting humans. I am, and really liked painting this model! I may not use him in my Ostermark army since I wanted to go for a heavy Morrian theme, but for now, he's pride of place to inspire me to paint the rest!

http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/1042/dsc00442xa.th.jpg (http://img257.imageshack.us/i/dsc00442xa.jpg/)

I spent a lot of time planning this model.

The Mad Electors horse and his legs. Body from a Pistollier, the neck guard from the Empire General (or possibly the Pistollier, I cant remember, there were a lot of sprues around me at the time!), arms from the Empire Wizard (I cut a length of cloth off either side, it looked awesome, but theres NO way he would ever rank up >.<), the head is a hairy head sprue with the hair carved off and beard trimmed to hide neatly behind the neck guard.

This guy is going to be the Grand Master of a Knightly Order I am yet to name. They'll be devoted to Morr, symbol either a rose or an open eye, I'm playing with the idea of using peacock feathers on all of the Knights since I'm planning a very dark black/purple colour scheme, I think peacock feathers would really work against a dark palette.

Thoughts, comments?

I'm back babby. Here is my stuff.

Red Green Clan

Army: Dwarves

Units: 3 Hammerers, Organ Gun, 3 bolt thrower crew with engineer

Build/ Conversions: Organ gun was a pretty straight forward build with a single swip of heads with another head. Bolt thrower crew were dwarf warriors given long poles with plasticard and empire spear tips for the bolts. Engineer started the same but gave him a pistol and gun. Hammerers are basic warriors with masks and the axe heads cut of their great weapons and replaced with hammer tops.

Painting: Same as the rest.

Base: Same as the rest.

Points: Organ Gun Pts. 120
Bolt Thrower and engineer(even though I painted up the bolt throwers I didn't consider them finished until I got the crew done as well) Pts. 60
3 Hammerers Pts. 36
Total this month 212
Total from the last time I posted 1504
Grand Total 1716
Organ Gun
Bolt Thrower Crew and engineer
No army shot this month. Next month I'll have the other bolt thrower crew finished and some other guys. All in due time, and it's great to be back.

06-06-2010, 20:04
ARMY: Lizardmen

Chakax - 335
Skinks - 76
Total - 411

TOTAL POINTS : 2034 ( finished )

HIGHS AND LOWS: Ok it's not a legal army because I only have 2 core units, but 8th edition will further kill it off anyway with the rumoured 25% character cap. I've spent a whole year just painting lizards and TBH I'm now quite sick of painting scales.

Nice painting so far everyone.

06-06-2010, 21:58
Beautiful painting Fluffy, and I love the slimy bases!

07-06-2010, 14:25
Malorian's Painting:

Models painted: slann, scarvet on coldone, 14 saurus cav, 3 terradons, and a salamander w/ extra handler

Points painted: 1068

Conversions: Only the scarvet's weapon (done originally to be the burning blade)

Highs: Once again the biggest high is looking at it after and seeing how much I got done

Lows: Painting those saurus cav was a real chore as it's very tough to paint within their crouched pose. Also annoying to see the difference in scale quality between the regular saurus, the saurus cav, and the scar vet. By this I mean the scales look more natural on the infantry, overly organised on the cav, and the scar vet's are almost non-existant. Was also miffed that the scar vet's eyes were just modelled as two large holes in his head...

Up next: I only need 200 more points to hit my quota... but we all know I don't roll that way ;) I plan to paint another unit of spear saurus, a unit of temple guard, more skirmishing skinks, and cap it off with an old blood on carnisaur :D

(I'm really happy how the slanns floating rock turned out, and not so happy how he turned out...)

Army - 2000+ Averland Empire (Huzzah!)

Units - 10 x Flaggelants (inc Prophet of Doom) = 110 pts
- 1 x Hellblaster Volley Gun = 110 pts

Total points = 220 pts

Total so far = 1844pts

Highs/Lows - Good to get away from the bright Averland colours and paint some drab and dirty figures for a change.

This month - 10 more handgunners, Amethyst Wizard and a mounted Warrior Priest

07-06-2010, 17:50
ARMY: Empire Nordland army

UNITS: Another unit of 5 knight and a mounted Warrior Priest (Gamezone)

PAINTING: Same old, same old. Bit more gold on the Priest.

LOWS: Cavalry... dreaded cavalry. Warrior Priests horse seems a bit off too.

HIGHS: Done!! Still working on Rocket Launcher, Volley Gun and Cannon though... :-)

POINTS: Warrior Priest (110) + Knights (162) = 272

TOTAL POINTS: 1843 + 272 = 2115

Sorry folks, I think I'm going to have to back out. I did finish my DOW, but I don't think I'll be getting a great deal done on the ol Orcs and Gobbies. Good luck everyone, and it's been a great time seeing everyone's fantastic painting!

08-06-2010, 15:09
Been following this thread for a few months, I would like to join the next Tale, do they usually start immediately after or is there a delay? I'll delete my post in a day or two to not clog up the nice picts. PS: I'm sadly not a great painter but working on it.

Comments! (round 1)

Ego Ninja: Your bases look great and I love how that sword turned out.

EmperorNorton: I don't think the knights look like muppets (and they will be happy to get their +2str back in 8th ;)) the mages also look great. Where are they from?

Inquisitor Pariah: I really like what you did with the pegasus wings.

Morglum Necksnapper: Wow... that's a lot of savage arrer boys! And then boar boyz and trolls too! You've been busy :)

Joseph Vintila: I like the conversion of the spawn but don't like how is is placed on the base. I know most of the time frontage doesn't mean much to a spawn, but it can.

Jim: Like the freehand on the banner. Looking forward to the shields.

Vaiuri: That's a great looking lizardmen army (my favorite is the terradon). Will be interesting to see how that mad elector turns out.

Dino: Dwarfen spears! Madness! ;)

fluffystuff: Beautiful... just beautiful... (as always)

Fabius Bile: Those flagellants look great, and nice freehand on the books.

Matrim_Cauthon: Have to say that warrior priest looks a little weird (the twisting of the model and how he's holding the hammer) but it has nothing to do with your painting :)

I have to JOKER this month unfortunately due to both finals and lack of motivation. I'll be back next month with hopefully lots of painted stuff.

The more the merrier! We're currently in our third year of the TOFP and the 'gap' between years has been undertaken differently each time. One year we jumped straight into the next year and the other we had a month gap (as a break, chance to work on side projects etc). What we do this year is up to Harry and more information on this will be available closer to the end of this round.

There is no painting ability requirement to join as the TOFP/TO40KP are designed as a means of getting armies finished (and fun of course :D) but you'll find that the regular painting pattern you'll end up in will help your painting ability rise in leaps and bounds so this is the place to be if you want to improve!

I look forward to seeing you around in Round 4!

I've been swamped with essay work the past few days, but expect comments from me tomorrow. Great work all round as per usual!

09-06-2010, 15:15
I did a gap the first year to get 'in sync' with the school holidays in the UK. Then went straight in this year to stay 'in sync'. It means 'students of various types' can build there armies and make a good start to the project because they have plenty of time for the first month. So I was assuming we would go straight in again.

10-06-2010, 11:42
It's a JOKER for me this month. Again. :(

10-06-2010, 15:28

for me this month. I was very busy this past month but should be able to finish out my 1000 next month.

12-06-2010, 07:41
Sweet stuff here again!
I've been painting more in my new house then on my models, so nothing finished, and joker for me. My painting table is still clogged with all kinds of different stuff that needs to find another place somewhere in my house.
also think I need to drop down to the boyz section. But I'll just deal with those changes myself :p

Hopefully somewhere during next week I'll also get internet access again. I'll update the tables as soon as that happens!

@ Harry
I probably won't be joining next year, as I don't have enough models left to actually create an army, but I'll stick around to do the tables-stuff again.

No more entries for this month? :(

I didn't even manage to paint those few characters I had planned in a whole year...

Anyway, I caught back up on the tables. Should have it online tomorrow.

@ Malorian
We're still missing about 20...

Table has been added (thanks Braad:)).

I've got an entry for this month to post up as soon as I get some pics taken. I went to the club the weekend before last and 2 of my entries exploded on the way home so I've had to rebuild and tidy them up hence the late submission.

I'm off work on Friday so I'll get some pics taken then.

17-06-2010, 02:07
I'm almost done my little entry for this month....June is a challenging month with 3 kids playing on 4 teams right now.... will post in a day or two

18-06-2010, 12:14
Unfortunatly, I have to quit, it's 3 months in a row that I can't produce anything. thanks for the ride guys. I'll try to continue the army in the summer, best of luck to everybody that's still in.

ARMY: Orcs and Goblins

UNITS: Rock Lobba, Doom Diver and 5 Black Orcs on their unfinished movement tray :)

PAINTING: Nothing spectacular, I've put a bit more effort into the black orc but I don't think it really shows in the pics :( The guy on the left of the black orcs is converted with an arm and head from the boyz box set and the boss' facemask from there as well.

LOWS: I had to rush the doom diver for a tourney last month so it's not everything I wanted and the black orcs are starting to get really samey. Also I had to redo the doomdiver and rock lobba somewhat after some serious chipping.

HIGHS: I'm very pleased with how the black orcs and the rock lobba crew have come out though the pics don't seem to do them justice sadly. Also I'm within touching distance of the end!

POINTS: Rock Lobba (70pts) + Doom Diver (80pts) + 5 Black Orcs (65pts) = 215pts

TOTAL POINTS: 1648 + 215pts = 1863pts

Dice Roll: 2

19-06-2010, 23:15
I'll be posting my efforts later in the month. I've got to paint 1300 points over the next 3 months, so the pressure's on!

21-06-2010, 05:42
Still hanging in there but thought I'ld show what's been slowing my painting progress - among other things. Doubt I would have painted anything since Christmas without the pleasant inspiration of this tale.

Next month I start a long awaited 6 month leave so will have time complete this boy's tale, get some comments down on others work and do a few other interesting things.

Army: Empire - odds and ends. Painting some items to build out to 8k fully painted - but oh so slowly

Unit: Cannon constructed from left-overs and chassis purchased as bits. and Rocket Launcher crew that have been languishing in a box while some cannon crew have been working their war machine.

Points: 110 for a new total of 842.

Highs: More fully painted war machines for large games.

Lows: Changing cameras and computers last month has moved my pictures from mediocre to bad. I'll have to concentrate on this soon.

21-06-2010, 17:52
nkicik: Always sucks when you paint a model just to have it chip right away (already happened to my newly painted terradons). You say the doom diver was a speed job but I think it looks fine.

gsmc: Did you make those paddels? Anyway the picture seems fine to me and I like the rusty look of the cannon (gives me hope that it will misfire and spare my carnisaur ;)).

21-06-2010, 21:20

Well you'll be OK if you find yourself up ***** creek. :D

22-06-2010, 05:13
Made them with my son's small scout troop. The boys were most proud and hope to avoid ***** creek.

And the cannon's not rusty - its experienced - so watch out Malorian.

22-06-2010, 07:46
Army: Middenland/Empire
Points so far; 2303 --> 2533!
This Month: Finished my unit of 20 Teutogen Guard (230 Points)

Quite glad now as only 3 months to go till the beasts start getting posted and only odds & sods to go!

Cheers for the support to get me to finish the last of the Empire... And lovely work from everyone else. Its really helping me to try and up my game in the painting stakes.

22-06-2010, 14:23
Kholboun, the Teutogen Guard look great and the only thing that seems slightly out of place is the use of purple, but I know that it to make them fit with the rest of your army. Congrats on finishing :)

So the next tale begins in August, right? I have my 2,000 point army primed and ready to go. I have to admit, though, it's taking a lot of willpower not to start painting right away...

24-06-2010, 07:04
It depends on how you look at 'start' as month 12 submissions are in August.

So August 1st you start painting for TOFP IV or you start your submissions for TOFP IV in the first week of September.

24-06-2010, 07:39

A little premature basecoating probably doesn't hurt.
It'd be quite contrary to its intention if the ToFP actually kept you from painting, wouldn't it?

24-06-2010, 07:42
I'll admit that I've already started painting my next Tale army. I won't count those units as part of the Tale, but gotta start getting ready with 8th around the corner. No time for slacking off.

24-06-2010, 16:55
Luckily/unluckily since I didn't get the job back home I'm stil lstuck up north and have lots of time to paint...

Looks like I'll be in the next one... I'll just have to figure out which armies to do now...

Hey I want to bring up an idea that might help things in the next tale: how about we drop the idea of jokers?

You see the problem is that jokers are seen as such a negative thing and it makes people drop out.

If instead the 2000 points was a goal, just as it was a goal each month to paint 200 points, and then leave it up to the painters with no jokers at all then I think we would see mroe people hang on later even if they have more than 2 jokers and won't meet the final 2K quota.

24-06-2010, 17:45
It might just cause people to have troubles planning their painting over a whole year. Leave too much to the last moment. That kind of stuff... But I wouldn't really care. There aren't to many finishing now, so that won't be very different :p

Don't know that I've ever heard of a will power problem in that direction around painting. I recommend giving in and applying the will-power elsewhere - unless the painting is interfering with life too much.

Interesting about the jokers. They're a bit of a negative motivator but a motivator none-the-less. Seems to me that its clear enough to everyone that the Tales are about painting and no-one's really kicked out for missing a couple of months - or over-painting like Malorian.

In fact I'm thinking to join next year's tale in August and the only post photos of my new General in exotic locations for the next few months while I do some travelling.

28-06-2010, 22:49
now that my exams are over i look forward to joining the TOFP hopefully in august with my warriors of chaos, funds permitting

Don't know that I've ever heard of a will power problem in that direction around painting. I recommend giving in and applying the will-power elsewhere - unless the painting is interfering with life too much.

Painting is my escape. Some people play sports, some people watch sports, I spend that time painting. In previous tales I literally ran out of models, as my disposable income is so low and GW models are so expensive. This time I have my army all ready to go, I just need to finish building it.

So in order to spend as little time each month constructing models (this isn't the tale of Fantasy Builders, after all) I'll spend the rest of June and July building/ converting the pile of sprues on my desk. That's the primary factor in my not painting.

Throw in my vote for the lack of Jokers in the next tale.

29-06-2010, 04:03
While I'm not against the idea of dropping Jokers, though nor am I for it yet either*, but how does "Sorry, no points from me this month because of X" differ from "Sorry, playing a joker this month because of X"?.

Surely it isn't the Joker itself but the fact that the painter is falling behind the pace that is the cause for dropping out? It isn't like we kick people out for getting a third joker.

*May or may not be partially because I'm quite fond of the image I use for my joker :shifty:.

29-06-2010, 07:35
Some people did seem to misunderstand the joker though, and had the mentality of "Oh, bummer, I used up both my jokers. Im out guys, see you next year".

29-06-2010, 09:17
I'm not in the Tale this year but I may return next year but thought I'd put in my 2 cents anyway! As for painting stuff for the next Tale I think this is fine, just try to not use them in the army or if you are really struggling to get your stuff done for a month you could use the stuff that you'd painted before the Tale started as a kind of extra joker (this is something I'm probably going to do for my Marines over on TO40KP as my painting time can be limited at certain times of year)! On this note will TOFP being doing a 'boys' league next year like TO40KP did so those who don't think they can do 2000 points can do 1000/1500 point armies? I think this is also a great option for those who want to carry on current armies to expand them a little?

As for dropping the jokers I would have to say that I don't think this is the best idea. The idea of the Tales is to allow people to get a fully painted army over the year & I think it would be better that it stays like this. Otherwise it might turn in to a 'just drop into this thread & post some stuff when you've painted it' & it might become a little unweildy. I also think that for a lot of people the 'I've used 2 jokers so I'm dropping out' is often an easy excuse to duck out when you know you're not going to be able to keep up (I've used it so I know!). You know that those who makes it past the 6/7 months mark are committed to it & there's always a lot more leeway with extra jokers/posting late then which is how I think it should be.

29-06-2010, 12:04

*pulls Jonah aside*

I know you went and did a runner on us this year but do try to keep up, we've got a Boys league this year already (in fact its what I'm in) ;).

Maybe the negative view on using one's Jokers could be averted by putting a disclaimer in the intro post plainly stating that two jokers does not equal being kicked out?

Jokers are a motivation for me. I'm currently sitting on two used jokers after a busy few months (in fact I haven't posted models in three months since I had a months worth of extra points) but now that I've just finished all of my assessments and exams it is one heck of a hobby motivator (even if it is currently being focused onto a Looted Wagon for my Orks :shifty:).

29-06-2010, 14:44
Otherwise it might turn in to a 'just drop into this thread & post some stuff when you've painted it'.

Isn't this what we want?

As far as I understood it, it was always encouraged for people to join whenever they could.

Another issue with the joker is the idea that if you didn't paint enough then you don't post at all.

There were some people that only painted (for arguements sake) half the points they needed, and since it wasn't enough they just posted a joker with the idea that they would clump it together for the next one.

If instead we got people at least posting what they did paint then they could at elast challenge themselves to try and do a little bit mroe each month rather than just doing enough to not have to post another joker (or dropping out completely).

Either way, it's just an idea :)

29-06-2010, 16:42
@ Doi - oh, I wasn't involved at all with this years Tale as started the 40k one so wasn't aware that there was a boys league over here too!

@ Malorian - I guess I didn't word it very well. Although people joining late is definately good I was more thinking of people who would just drop in on say month 5 with just one unit & then not post anything again whereas the Tale is more designed for seeing armies develop

29-06-2010, 16:57
I have to side with Jonah here.
As far as I'm concerned the somewhat rigid structure of the ToFP is a good thing.
It's about motivation (and I need a bit of tough love to be motivated), but not only about seeing your own army grow, but also the armies of your fellow painters. I think without the rules (and they aren't strict anyway) that would fall apart.

30-06-2010, 01:08
I'll have to joker this month, but I'll be back in next month with another gyrocopter and more longbeards, should be enough to finish my tale.

30-06-2010, 06:47
Just a last minute joker from me... Sorry

I have some almost finished stuff, that i will post next month.

30-06-2010, 17:52
I now know that I won't be finishing my models before the end of the tale, but since I'm past 1000 points, I'm calling it done and putting myself in the boyz league.

Yeah, I finished something!

Okay, not as satisfying as I imagined, but just too busy and restless with all the house buying, decorating, cleaning and stuff like that. Ow, and something about zombies (no warhammer, no...).

30-06-2010, 20:32
Sorry people I'm to lazy to paint my stuff. I'm giving up this years tale. Although I promise to finish my war altar this July.

30-06-2010, 23:14
Last minute entry!
Just a quickie. Okay, so it's a pathetic 110 points (10 x crossbowmen), but just to show I have been busy, here's a shot of the scenic base I've been working on for next month's cold ones and a unit of spearmen (which I'll finish off next month).

01-07-2010, 02:28
What did you use for that metallic green color? It's almost like a pearlescent.

01-07-2010, 07:13
@Lord Dan - it's a colour-changing paint. Depending on the angle you view it, it's either purple or green and it works especially well on larger, curved surfaces where you get a mixture of both colours. The flash photography has made it look a lot more glittery than it appears in normal viewing conditions.

01-07-2010, 08:05
I now know that I won't be finishing my models before the end of the tale, but since I'm past 1000 points, I'm calling it done and putting myself in the boyz league.

Does that mean you've got enough models to do the next TOFP in the Boys League again? :shifty:

@Lord Dan - it's a colour-changing paint.

Are you using the same one used on cars or have you found a model paint that does the same?

01-07-2010, 09:43
@Doi - it's the one used on cars. Not ideal for models because the paint requires a few coats and that can obscure a lot of detail, but hey, that's the price you pay to get that bizarro looking effect.

02-07-2010, 15:20
Does that mean you've got enough models to do the next TOFP in the Boys League again? :shifty:

Dunno, I could count them...

First, I'll start the new thread, since I'm not seeing it anywhere.
