View Full Version : Tale of 40k.. Blood Angels Re-Vamp

14-06-2010, 10:50
Hey WarSeer,

After all the helpful input I got from my last log I’m going to start a one for my most current project.

I’ve got a boat load of Blood Angels in boxes that are in a bit of a sorry state, since they have a proper codex now and my daemons don’t get much action, I thought I’d have a go at re-Vamping them for a tournament my club is running later this year.

Me and some others are going to be doing this in a “Tale of 40k Gamers” style.

So this is how it breaks down, to get 1500 points done in time for the tourney we have to do 250points/fortnight. (I thought that sounded easy!)

The first deadline was last night, and I’ve kinda under achieved barely scratching 200 points because I re did the list a bit and took the jump packs off the death company.

I should be managing weekly updates, but I check in every day, I’ll put up my finished entry for stage one tomorrow. For now here is the WIP on my new favourite conversion. The leader of my DC.

Not sure if a thunder hammer is ideal but I couldn’t resist. This is the only guy that will be made of all new parts, everyone else will have some of the new bits mixed with old stuffs.

Reets, I wasn't at work yesterday so no update there..

Here are my Death Company.. since adding the photo's to photo bucket, i've seen a few errors (i saw the missing arm before i posted photos) but if you can spot anything let me know..

I'm new to painting eyes and they are a bit sloppy, any tips??

Also forgot to bring the priest to photograph..

Very good work. I like the grey scheme, it works well. The armour and red is highlighted really well. As for the eyes, it looks like he has some manic stare, but seeing as he is a blood lusting madman, it fits very well :)

I like these. Nicely done.
As for eyes, my tip is : dont go for standard GW style eyes, just paint the white bits fairly small, then use a dark coloured ink/wash to apply shading to the area, covering over the white. It should make it look like they have dark shadows around the eyes, creating a menacing look, perfect for soldiers at war.

Just my 2cents mate =) Have a look at my Log for a reference. I first tried it on some BlackTemplar models i had. Do it all the time now. And from a Tabletop PoV, its perfect.

eltanko: Thanks for the praise, I'll be re doing the face later, as I’m on a pretty tight time scale it'll do for now, and crazy eyes is better than no eyes :)

Coltaine: Thanks for the comments, I like the stuff in your log, I'll have a go at your way of doing eyes, I’ve got a whole bunch of techniques to try out.. and plenty more figs without helmets to show later..

Minor update, the start of a tactical squad for my next entry for the tale, I wanted this unit to be advancing, so I’ve added in a few bits to try and get some movement into them.

For the heavy weapon guy I keep forgetting that they have bolt pistols so I’m going to try and have all heavy weapon armed tactical marines holding their bolt pistols.

I need to get these guys and a rhino painted by next Sunday (27th)!

What strings are used on this Lascannon?

18-06-2010, 10:32
Well, I'm not sure exactly, I have a few friends that play guitar and I get any snapped strings they have, they are the wrapped type tho, the larger is about 1mm and the smaller about 0.5mm.. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Nice job on the death company Malzeth they look nice and dynamic and the highlights on the black armour are brilliant! Keep it up!

Thanks salvindogath, I was worried they looked a little too gray... i might refine them later... they'll do for now..

Re Worked my list again..

so here is a run down of the list I’m working towards, since I’ve been out of the 40k loop for a while and I’m not 100% on what works well.

Also I’m hoping to find a compromise between “works on battle field” and “Fits the fluff”.

In line with this I’m basing the list on 1 specific company, probably the 5th because the have the easiest shoulder ornaments to paint (and all my other stuff has the single black blood drop).

So please point out if I do something out of the ordinary for a chapter…

As far as I can see the 5th is built up from 2 assault squads, 6 Tactical squads and 2 Devastator Squads. (I aim to collect the whole company eventually)

So my 1500 point will be..

Jump Pack
Blood Lance, Unleash Rage.

Sanguinary Priest x 2

5 Assault Marines
Power Fist
Hand Flamer

10 Assault Marines
Power Fist
Hand Flamer

5 Tactical Marines
Plasma Gun
Power Weapon
Melta Bomb
Razorback / Extra Armour

5 Devastators
4 Missile launchers
Razorback / Extra Armour

5 Death Company
Thunder Hammer

Land Raider

Death Company Dread with Blood Talons.

1500 Bang on.

Note: This is very different to my usual set up of lots of tactical squads in rhinos... does it look ok?

That's a purty Death Company, they'll look lovely crushed into the tracks of my Land Raiders :) In all seriousness though, they do look better each time I see them in pics! :)

Ah so...... !

My Fellow Tale member show's his face..

You just reminded me I need to pick a foe for my Angels (I always choose an enemy to decorate bases and things - last time i did angels it was night lord bits), unfortunatley your guys are a bit to red to contrast with my guys.. what would work as a good contrast?

It'll have to be another army from the tale.. so:
Guard Humies
Ultra Smurfs
Ulthwe Elfs
Death Guard
Space Wolves
Dark Angels

What do we think..

I think it has to be the Death Guard, green contrasts nicely, they're suitable opponents for the Angels and they're Triplow's so so they deserve to be maimed! :D Smurfs would work but hard to think of a reason for them being mangled on your bases... unless, it's to show that the Smurfs will fall and your guys will have to do all the hard work for them...!

21-06-2010, 14:22
HA!!! That sounds about right..

Death Guard it is (mostly because I've been hurting for a chance to paint those colours on something).

I'll be basing my librarian tonight so i'll see what I can dig out..

Also I on the list I'm thinking of swapping out the devestators for a vindicator and the LR for more troops in the 5 man units and a Predetor..

22-07-2010, 10:04
Well I've been rubbish at keeping up with the 250pts per fortnight,

I'll stick up the bits i have been working on, mostly because I really need some advice on the most recent addition.

My First Red Angel just about finished:

Work in progress Librarian, still to recive Jump pack:

Building work on my Death Company Dread:

And the first few layers of paint on the Death Guard Base decoration for the dread:

This last pic is the one i want some help with, I'm planning to dull him down alot, but looking for suggestions, never painted nurglers for 40k before, i'll be scouring the chaos logs for nurgle stuff but if anyone has suggestions please voice them.. I've got more wip shots of everything if you want to see them..

And a little thanks to ilikebmxbikes for his awesome red technique.

Firstly, love your stuff so far, great work!

Also I on the list I'm thinking of swapping out the devestators for a vindicator and the LR for more troops in the 5 man units and a Predetor..

id say this would make your army more competitive, also get shield of sanguinius on ur libby, follow your tanks with this guy and enjoy a 5+ cover on your armour, makes av13 preds and vindis very tough.

/edit with regard to painting death gaurd, ive got no idea sorry, never done em

VendableFall: Thanks bud, thats good advice, hadn't even considered it, got a test game next week (using some proxy assualt marines cos i'm yet to build them) so i'll see how it goes.

22-07-2010, 11:18
Malzeth this logs looks very promising, looking forward to seing more pic of that dread.

22-07-2010, 14:03
It's the FW Chaplain Dread as you can probably see from the legs, the only changes i've made are:

Reposition of the legs to have him standing on the terminator, including bending the toes into a more action like pose.
The open area on the chest, i've filled with one of the skulls from the blood angels icon pack (with the cross bones stripped off).
Stuck a winged grail on the left arm i think.
Replaced one of the storm bolters (i got 2 because i got 2 claws and you get the sensor in the ranged weapon arms) with a chaos melta gun (the one with the skull on the barrel)

the only other pics i have of it:

edit:I've since removed that horrible mould line

Regarding the nurgel terminator, just give him a wash or two with devlan mud. That should make him look a less bright.

23-07-2010, 10:35
Beautiful modeling at work here! I love the nurgle termi, and the guy carring the thunder hammer is great looking.

29-05-2011, 22:34
well these are getting sold to make money for chainsaws,

my first ever attempt at ebay sales.. if the DC sell ok i'll start putting up the rest.

hope it's ok to pimp a link here.
