Here it is: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?aId=10100033a

In discussing the disadvantages of Hordes the author warns you not to get the formation caught in terrain or it will lose its rank bonus.

Huh?

As far as I can see, the only terrain that causes a unit to lose its rank bonus is a river. (Well, buildings too, but who is going to put 30+ models in a building?).

So what am I missing here?

I think he is referring more to taking a dangerous terrain test and losing a lot of your models, but I could be mistaken.

forest makes you lose ranks if more than half is in it.

Rank units lose ranks in forests.

forest makes you lose ranks if more than half is in it.

Where does it say that?

On page 119 "Forests and Close Combat" it says only that "a unit with a majority of models fighting in a forest can therefore never be steadfast."

It just means you don't get to be sturbon despite having more ranks then the unit you are fighting and will probably run away like a horde of little girls...if you lose.

I'll be VERY cautious when reading GW's so-called tacticas...

There is one good point that the article does bring up and that's about how 12 point models (and over) that are not monstrous infantry are best not used in horde formation. It's may be common sense but is still good info.

GW's 'tactics' are never very reliable, they told me to give full command to some Marauder horsemen and poisoned attacks to my warhounds.....

But yeah, they say you're guaranteed 30 attacks, not if your fighting say... a conga line

Bad advice is one thing.

Being wrong about the rules (which you wrote) is another......
