Hi folks,
I'm coming back to the game after a couple of years away and considering starting an empire army. Basically, I was curious as to how people constructed their war alter, given that there's no model available for it.

Obviously I'll design my own, but I could do with pointing in the right direction.

That is the GW War Altar. I've seen people make their own using plasticard and balsa and it ends up pretty nice.

They also posted a War Altar made out of a Steam Tank + lots of other stuff on the GW site today: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/blogPost.jsp?aId=11500025a

I'm currently making a War Altar myself out of a Corpse Cart that has been modified quite a bit :) So far Im happy with how its working out :)

There is a model avaliable for it, It's Volkmars. As there is only one War Altar, any Arch-Lector taking one would use the same model.

Oh, didn't know about the volkmar model. It looks alot like a chaos chariot, really, plus the big eagle. That definately helps, thanks guys.

Altar! Altar! Altar! It is a War ALTAR.

The GW Volkmar model is really awful. The giant winged demon-monkey on the back looks like a joke. If at all possible, anyone that want to take a War Altar should convert one.

I agree explorator. The Altar itself looks really dumb because of the griffon. I do like the Volkmar figure itself though.

I'd say build yourself one :D

Point taken about the spelling. Comes from typing on my phone - stops me thinking about things like that :) I take your point about the model too - it's a bit hideous. Any common conversion suggestions?

You mean an awesome conversion like this:

Check out the rest of the conversions on CMoN for some great ideas. Some effort is required (and probably some money, too) but if you make something cool please share with the rest of the class. :)

Very, very nice conversion. I don't mind spending some cash getting a very nice model together. The idea makes me want to give empire a whirl. How are they looking after 8th edition?

Hi Malladorin,

This is my converted War Altar that I made last month for the Tale Of Fantasy Painters 2009-2010 log over in the painting support groups sub forum:

This text is lifted from my original post about how I made it:

The main conversion work this month was on the War Altar...The base of the is the standard war altar available from GW direct. I Swapped the griffon for one of the statues from the shrine building, the Lector is the 'Blessing of Sigmar' model from the Empire collectors range. I used Bretonnian warhorses instead of the standard empire ones and then have gone to town adding candles, bells, skulls, books, etc... from various bits and kits in the GW range

Hope this helps!

Jim

I've scratch build my war altar, because I didn't like the way Volkmar looked on his.

Maybe it can give you some ideas for your own conversion.

As to how Empire will perform under 8th edition rules, I think they got a bump up, and it's worth trying =)

New plastic griffon in the starter set is going to open up a few conversions for those modelling-minded people out, going to lead to some crazy stuff I'm sure.

I've retrospectively decided that the spelling mistake in the title is actually a pun, since it's about altering an altar :)

Try to make it big though: its a large target after all and with TLOS its only fair to make it at least slightly bigger than a normal chariot.
Mine's pretty huge actually, no piccies though.

I'd say build yourself one :D Considering there are hardly any models left in the entire WFB range form the time that the War Altar was originally designed and released ('92ish), I'd say its held up quite well.

I am scratchbuilding one, but only because I can't afford the actual model . For anyone who wants more ideas and background, look up Carroccio
