The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2010-2011

Happy New Year

This is the thread for the work you have done in DECEMBER and after a week (to give folks time to post their work) it becomes the thread to post your comments on others work and discuss what you are painting in January.

So here we are 3 months into the 'Tale' you should have around a quarter of your army painted. This is when lots of people seem to drop out as the initial enthusiasm wears off. So make a new years resolution to yourselves to stick at it and finish this army in 2011.

Can’t wait to see everyones painting.

All the very best,

The story so far:

640x480 seems to work best OR use thumbnails
Bigger than this results in the scroll bar of doom for many.

What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Painters (TOP) is to help motivate those involved to start and complete an army in the next twelve months.

We made a decision early on to split the Tale into two separate 'halves' one for 40K and one for Fantasy. (Just because of the numbers of people involved) They have continued to evolve in slightly different ways but this is how the Fantasy Tale works.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of September 2010 and finishing with their last post on the last day of August 2011. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to collect, build, convert, undercoat and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in September.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

At the end of each month a new thread will appear for the painters to post your previous months painting and the rest of the painters to offer words of encouragement.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

Men and Boys

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two catagories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.

Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes (we are not here to tell you how and when to paint your stuff, it is great to get ahead) BUT we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 200 points a month (200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc.) so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example oif you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

ARMY : Undead (VC) : 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: Cairn Wraiths (+ a couple of extras)

BACKGROUND/THEME: Nagash, still weak from his death, realised that he needed his old magical artefacts to reassert his power, including his stolen crown. So Nagash forged a new hand to replace his missing one out of a warpstone alloy. Nagash’s attention was drawn North to where his crown now lay. The crown had been taken north into the Badlands, where it fell into the hands of Orcs who raided across the Black Mountains and seemingly disappeared. The Orcs were destroyed by Sigmar Heldenhammer and the crown was in his possession.

“Sensing its utter evil, the young Emperor had refused to use it and kept it under lock and key within his treasure vaults … So it was Nagash arrived in the lands of the nascent Empire and took up residence within the long abandoned ruins of the Elf city of Athel Tamara. This was to be his base from which he would scour the north in search of his crown.

Krell ‘Lord of the Undead’ ( Champion of Nagash) :

Krell was a mighty Chaos Champion in the days long before the birth of the Empire, during the period the Dwarfs call the "Time of Woes". The Dwarf hero Grimbul Ironhelm finally killed him during the assault on Karak Kadrin. His body was buried by his followers in the Chaos Wastes where it was found, centuries later, by Nagash who stumbled on it in his search for the Crown of Sorcery. The Great Necromancer raised Krell from the dead and placed him in command of a legion of Undead during the Battle of the River Reik against Sigmar. Krell's forces were pitched against the Dwarf allies. When Nagash died and his army crumbled, Krell and his ‘doomed legion’ escaped and only after butchering many settlements.

Legions of the Dead:

Nagash spent many months gathering his strength. His spells raised legions of the dead from the burial mounds and other dark things came to his call until a mighty army of the undead was assembled – although no vampires came to his call. At last he was ready to make war against Sigmar and his followers.”

Continuing the outrageous painting fury!

ARMY : Empire : 1000 Points (BOYS)

"UNIT": Battle standard bearer, duelist, halberd soldiers (7), swordman, knight and helblaster volley gun, handgunners (4)

BACKGROUND/THEME: After the Storm of Chaos the forces of Empire are mixed and in bad shape. I plan to build an Empire army with mixed units.

BUILD/CONVERSION: More basic than before. The halberd unit is coming together so I decided to add more green/red-uniforms to indicate the unit's origin. I replaced the banner of a teutogen guard to make him my BSB and mixed a lot of bitz to create the duelist for upcoming swordmen.

PAINTING: Mostly base coat with brown, foundation paints shadowed with washes and highlighted with basic paints. Duelist was primed black and the swordman and the BSB were primed white.

BASING: Most models have their base decorated with resin casts or slates GW's basing kit. Other than that there's saw dust, painted black, highlighted with dark grey, space wolves gray (I think) and bleached bone and white. Some flock added also from various sources.

STILL TO DO: The BSB banner needs some additional work I think. Next in line is a unit of great swords (3 almost done) and swordmen. I still need some halberd fighters too but I'm thinking of using some older spearmen and just replacing their spear heads with halberds.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Again I managed to paint an incredible sum of troops and am really pleased with the results! The army is starting to look great together and I still have energy left to finish this project. At least I hope so. There's still too many rank-and-file soldiers to come but I've managed to stay away from high cost heroes almost entirely. At the turn of the year our own gaming groups painting challenge reached its finale so I hope I can keep up the flow of state troops...

POINTS : Battle standard bearer (75), duelist (16), halberd soldiers (35), swordman (6), knight (23), helblaster volley gun (110), handgunners (32)

TOTAL POINTS : This month 297p. / Overall 749p. (four months painting and No Jokers) - I'm thinking of moving into mens league but it'll have to wait for the next month so I can see if I'm up to it.

halberd fighters:

knight and a swordman

helblaster volley gun:

Handgunners as an attachment to cheat the pic limit. ^_^

I'm back, here's my 100 points for January

Unit: 5 WC(85) and a WC Champion(27), all with shields(6) and halberds(6), 114 points.

They're still drying as per the photo, but paintjob is finished. The shields will be glued on once dry.

Still to do: The basing, as explained earlier, I'll do that in the end for my whole army.

Here's a WIP and a PIP, the WIP beeing a wizard. I'm looking for a good spellcasting left hand for him instead of the WoC Lord axe he's holding.. The PIP is a Daemon Prince with a small convertion with an Ogre head and marauder horseman musician horn in the forehead.. :)

Unfortunately its a joker for me for Dec, I never got around to even base-coating anything >.< And I cant post for the ONE Sea Guard I did, so all my work this month has just been assumbly, I'll play catch-up in Jan!

Great work so far guys, keep it up!

01-01-2011, 13:02
ARMY : Dwarves 2000pts (Men)

UNITS: Dwarf Lord & Thane

THEME: Dark Ages - mixing figures from the earliest 80s FT and C-Series through to moderns. Trying to keep a tight theme with Viking/Saxon styled sculpts, though with the usual fantasy twist. No Renaissance figures, virtually no Marauder figures (shock horror! - but good on the wallet).

BUILD/CONVERSION: Converted banner poles from brass wire and plastic banners from Warriors, minis are late '80s MExx LOTR / Norse sculpts, shields are from WFB 4th Ed Dwarf Warriors.

PAINTING: Black undercoat, built up from dark to light. Looked at the primitive art on REALLY old coins (medieval silver pennies) for inspiration for the old-fashioned banner.

HIGHS AND LOWS: HIGH Getting it done at the start of the month! LOW Trying to do this whilst revising for 3rd year Statistics exams at university.

POINTS : c. 300pts

DICE ROLL : 3 (Comments later in the month).

Also a quick WIP shot - I had a few plastic banners lying around, so thought I would get some use out of them - converted from various 80s figures with brass wire banners.

Looking forward to all the other entries!

Beautiful stuff guys, im particularly liking Doc_Cthulhu's mixed halberdiers. Great idea to mix it up a bit, they will look very interesting on the battlefield

Harry. How did you do the grass on the high elf dragon base? Im assuming its painted sand from what i can see, but i really like the rich colour. Might have to steal that one!

Anyhow. I was thinking about getting my elves finished as a new years resolution, and this would be a great aid, so without further ado, you can consider me a joiner. Ill post some pics of what ive manged to achieve through december in a minute. Its closer to 400pts half painted than 200 points fully painted, so i guess that counts? Janurary should see them finished.
Its a shame the 40k log seems unwilling to accept late starters.
EDIT Pics etc
ARMY : Elves 2000 (Men)

UNITS: White lions and Spearmen

THEME: Nothing in particular, but largely infantry based. Spears are definately the core of this army.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Out of the box(es) Spearmen standard bearer has a standard top from the high elf mage box, as im not a fan of the bulky flags.

PAINTING: White undercoat, Metal is a basecoat of my own concocton (Shadow Grey and chaos black in uncertain quantities) then a darkened boltgun metal, and finally mithril silver. Blades are mithril silver and hawk turquoise in roughly a 3:1 mix. Blues are regal blue, then enchanted, and in some cases extra highlight with ice blue. Flesh is a recipe ill dig out in a minute.

STILL TO DO. White lions. Bases. Details, neatening whites and mistakes. Feet. Plumes. Tails.
Spearmen. Bases. Shields, Details, gems, chestplate.

HIGHS AND LOWS: My (late) start to the tale! And the realisation of just how much still needs to be done...

POINTS : c. 182

Thats 14 White lions and 16 spearmen, The spearmen are intended to join previously painted models and sit in a sort of phalanx formation, hence the odd ranks, and the side view. total of 364 points half painted, so call it 182 for now

01-01-2011, 14:37
ARMY : Bretonnians (2000 - Men's)

"UNIT": The Green Knight

BUILD/CONVERSION: out of the box. In my opinion this is one of the greatest ever GW mini's to have been scuplted.

PAINTING: Sticking with my use of washes, i undercoated the whole model white, then washed it with different shades of green. Painted the armour in silver and gave it a light green wash to suggest the ethreal nature of the model.

BASING: GW sand and static grass.. nothing too fancy

Highs - getting him finshed and i'm happy with how the washes worked on the mini. was a little scared to try this method on a non peasant.

Lows - the freehand swirls. once i started i couldn't go back and touch up as that would have meant stripped the whole model and starting the wash process and feel that the freehand work isn't up to the standard as others on warseer.

POINTS : 275

TOTAL POINTS : This month 275 / Overall 892 (four months painting and No Jokers)

NEXT MONTH: Going to make a start at some knights.

Season's greetings;

Army: High elves (boys)

Unit: IoB Griffon Prince (continued from last month) Rider @ 150 points

The Birdy; feathery part basecoated Khemri brown, devlan mud wash, Khemri brown drybrush. Liony part basecoated Dheneb stone, washed with badab black, highlighted with deneb stone. Leopard spots done with watered down chaos black.

The pointy eared chap; Armour basecoated boltgun metal, blue wash, boltgun metal highlight. Blue is mordian blue ->enchanted blue ->blue wash.

Highs: Beautiful model

Lows: Through my infinite genius I managed to mess up putting this model together so his face kind of melted from polycement, so I had to re-define his features and go for stark highlights on the skin to make him look less melted.

Thanks for listening :)

EDIT: I've just seen the hideous gap in the pictures that I've somehow completely missed, will need to get that filled.

01-01-2011, 17:38
I am using a Joker this month.

I have built 1 base and 2 arches for the Bell/Furnace kit. I painting the whole thing simultaneously. So will probably buy back this joker and then some.

Die Roll: 6

My biggest hang up for me are the plague monks. I wanted my monks to have white (ish) robes and yellow (my main theme color) hoods/hats/cowls. I've got the robe shaded the way I want (if I go with these colors) but nothing but base coat on the top but I'm not liking they way they look together.

Any suggestions?

01-01-2011, 20:29
gonna have to joker this month, December was a write off, I had a snow-related car crash (don't worry, I'm fine.....) followed by a bout of flu, couple that with xmas shopping and visiting the rellies and whatnot and I didn't manage to pick my brush up once!

I'll endeavour to earn my jokers back in the coming months though, so I'm not beaten yet!!

Finally getting a bit more organised with this.

ARMY : Bretonnians : 1000 Points (BOYS)

UNIT: 20 Peasant Archers.

BACKGROUND/THEME: Um. Paint a whole army for the first time since 6th ed?

BUILD/CONVERSION: Some minor stuff. I head swapped a bunch of the newer heads on some of hte kazillian of the old 5th ed. archers I've got, and converted a standard bearer.

PAINTING: Undercoated Black. Mostly neutral tones, but each model has some white and blue on them, as this seems to be emerging as the heraldric keystone of the army.

BASING: Sand from the local playground, painted black, then dark brown, medium, brown, and graveyard earth. I haven't decided on how to flock yet.

STILL TO DO: Other than flocking, these guys are done. I might tinker with brazier attachments

HIGHS AND LOWS: I kind of hit a wall half way through these guys - part of why I filed a joker last month. Now that they are done, it should be smooth sailing.

POINTS : 130

Dice Roll: 2
Army: Beastmen Boys (1000 points)
Unit: Command for my Minotaurs
Build/Conversion: Pretty much straight out of the box. The Bloodkine has been converted a bit with his Great Weapon arm. The Great weapon is a suitable large single hand weapon, with the grip from a Great weapon attached to it. His army was also modified to point in that direction.
Still to do: Nothing, they're done. I'll probably add more to the unit in the far far future, since 5 is an odd number to have.
Highs and Lows: Minotaurs go very smoothly when painting. It takes AGES to do all that skin, but because they cost so many points, it's all good. Bloodkine is a right pain to rank up though.
Points: 239
Total Points: 580
Next Month: Not sure at this stage. Maybe another Chariot. I'm away for 2 weeks next month... so gotta think how to get everything done in 2 weeks.

Also, just throwing this in rather than a seperate post for my other Beastmen.
Army: Beastmen Men (2000 points)
Unfortunately, I just didn't get enough done in December. The Bestigors in the last week and a bit were coming along really well actually. But the unit is only half complete, so they'll be coming next month.

01-01-2011, 23:05
Dice Roll:2
Army: High Elves, Boys (1000 points)
Unit: 12 Lothern Sea Guard
Build/Conversion: When I traded for my High Elves, a few Sea Guard spears were missing unfortunately. Also, since you don't get a spear for the 2nd banner bearer, I had to use arms from the Spearmen kit. It doesn't look too bad, you don't really notice unless you're looking for it.
Still to do: Not sure what grass I'm going to use on the High Elves yet, so still gotta flock their bases.
Highs and Lows: Well, I mentioned last month that motivation was a bit of a pain for these guys. Great models, but a lot of details to paint. But the highs are they look great when painted up, and the Sea Guard are nearly done.
Points: 156
Total Points: 341
Next Month: Finish off the Sea Guard. Also, I will be painting 5 Shadow Warriors to play a bit of catch up.

02-01-2011, 09:04
ARMY : Hordes of Chaos (All things Khornate)

UNIT: Dragon Ogre Shaggoth

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight from the box! Needed lots of green stuff though...

PAINTING: Bit harder to put in the Khorne Red here without overdoing it... but I think I managed it pretty well!

BASING: Same as always... looks nice to me!

HIGHS AND LOWS: This was a blast of a model to paint. I had some difficulties bringing out the fleshtones, but in the end I am pretty satisfied.

POINTS : 265 pts

TOTAL POINTS SO FAR: 372 + 265 = 637 pts (buys back one joker)

Hi all,

Dice roll = 3

My Daemons update, going for Blood Thirster over Dec and Jan 225 points each month, have tested a few colours on him so far, not quite halfway there yet as will have to redo most areas I'm not happy with.

For my Orcs and Gobbo's I've managed to claw back some points on my lousy performance so far, Snarsnik and Gobbla (205 points) 1 fanatic (25) 2 NG shaman (100) and 21 NG spear (84)

I do have to paint the mushroom yet and work a bit more on some of the bases

Monthly total;

Daemons - 225
Orcs and Goblins - 414

Belated Happy New Year peeps.

Army: High elves 2000pts

Unit: IoB Mage

Background: Childhood friend of the general, although Cothiquain (sp?) this mage has the blood of Caledor Dragontamer running through his veins (thought not Caledor the First), and the magical ability of that line has passed to him. Sorry, I'm really crap at coming up with names.

Highs: Enjoyed painting this, I did most of it with the pieces seperate and then assembled it for the finishing touches, this made painting it a lot easier than it might have been.

Lows: The swirliness it is standing on didn't come out very well, I'll nick some ideas from here to improve it. :shifty:

Dice Roll: 1

Points: 225

02-01-2011, 13:39
Army: Chaos Daemons 2000pts

Unit: 10 Bloodletters

Painting/Still to Do: Having listened to the advice here, I've tried to get some definition on these by giving them some underlighting with Solar Orange and Yellow. I may do some more to the horns etc when I get the chance.

I've managed to do some playing about with a test base and green stuff for my rivers of blood basing idea. It still needs a bit of work but it is looking ok so far. I'll post a WIP later in the month.

Highs: pleased with the underlighting.

Lows: As has been noticed on other threads, getting them to rank up is a bit of a PITA.

Dice Roll: 1

Points: 175

Happy New Year one and all! So many beautiful paintjobs all round... great job guys!

ARMY : Tomb Kings

UNIT: The King and I. Well, the king, a liche priest and 3 carrion, at least...

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight from the box.

PAINTING: Army Painter Goodness...

HIGHS AND LOWS: Painting the carrion was confusing at times. Couldn't make out the feathers and the bones.

POINTS : 357

King Sappuliuliuma the Not-Really-Imperishable, Lord of the Satrapy of Um, Left pinkie of Settra the Imperishable (as opposed to being, for instance, the Right Hand of Settra the Imperishable), Stopper of the Backside of Khemri and Commander of the Armies that Got Left Behind Because They Couldn't Keep Up. Seen here with Low Priest Likmid.

His pet birds. Many of his peers found his choice of vultures a little odd, but put it down to the fact that it was after all, Sappuliuliuma and he was a little odd. Furthermore, it was great for parties when they pecked his fingers off his hands.

Army: High Elves

UNIT: a Noble and a Mage

BACKGROUND/THEME: The High Elf garrison of the Citadel of Dusk at the southern tip of Lustria.

UNIT: 1 Tyrant

STILL TO DO: Add grass to the base.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Nothing comes to mind.

@Harry: You say, and I quote from the first post on this very thread:

"we would like you only to post 200 points (approx) each month () so as not to depress the hell out of those of us who are struggling to keep up."

Erm, yes, ok. After you've posted a squillion points of stuff on day 1 of the month.
Well, 18 infantry and 17 cavalry (and cav take AGES). Naughty Harry ;)

Just to add to this, Ego Ninja has 2 good-looking mini armies now, and you have a decent-sized one, EmperorNorton. Heck, you've painted more Ogres than I have Dwarves. I think even the Daemon players have overtaken me on numbers :S

Has anybody still in the TOFP actually painted less figures than me so far? I'm on 15 Dwarves in 4 months!

Well, it's all in the name of fun, I guess. :)

I'm sorry but I have to use a second joker in a row.

03-01-2011, 19:19
ARMY : Ogre Kingdoms : 2000 Points + (REAL MEN)

UNIT: Ogre Ironguts

BACKGROUND/THEME: Agbarr Ironbrewer and the Hard Bar Stewards ( ;) )

Standing at the forefront of the Skull(pl)uckers tribe is the mighty Agbarr, a brute of an Ogre with a penchant for strong booze. After yet another successful raid on a Dwarven Merchant convoy, Agbarr found himself in possesion of the best part of a Dwarf Brewmaster (his leg was missing, but what's an Ogre to do?) Agbarr, intrigued by the Dwarf, managed to contain his hunger long enough to examine the veritable horde of glass vials and potions about the Dwarf and his wagon, and after imbibing one, dragged the unfortunate captive back to the tribe.

In a position somewhat between Gnoblar and slave, the Dwarf taught Agbarr how to distil alcohol from grain, giving the tribe their one and only reason to try and locate any sort of non-meat foodstuff, although, being one of the biggest, loudest and most intimidating Ironguts, he found interesting ways of adding to the flavour. All involving adding some form of ironmongery or metal to the brew. Giving rise to the phrase 'There's Trouble brewing.' Agbarr has also come to blows with Boomer on more than one occasion as his cannons proved to be a source of much flavour for the last batch of Ironbrew.

Agbarr enjoys a special place in the tribe, as the only member with full knowledge of the brewing rituals, the Dwarf Brewer cannot be counted as he was put into a bottle and pickled in one of Agbarr's first batches of medicinal tonic. 'Guaranteed to put hairs on your chest' ran the tagline. Sadly, containing 100% Dwarf, it also put hairs on the roof of the mouth.

Following Agbarr, the Hard Bar Stewards got their name due to the fact that they oversee the running of the stills and drinking areas of the tribe, and are the only Ogres with enough intestinal fortitude to drink more than a few kegs of Ironbrew in one sitting. A bunch of violent thugs, they take great pride in dragging unruly patrons round the back for a good kickin'.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the box, damage added with scalpel and triangular file to armour plates.

PAINTING: As before, mostly Foundation paints and the Devlan Mudbath. Followed by facepaint and metal highlights.

BASING: As before.

STILL TO DO: The Bulls banner...

HIGHS: Another unit added to my now growing Ogre army.

LOWS: I wanted to get more done.

POINTS : 4 Ironguts including Standard Bearer with War Banner and Bellower - 257

TOTAL POINTS : 716 + 277 = 993. (Wooo, a 1k army in 4 months)

FUTURE PLANS: Hmmmm, now that I have a pretty much functional army, I'm keen to stick to the army selection ratios. I'm either going to expand this unit, add another unit of Bulls or Leadbelchers, or maybe a Giant and some Gorgers. I've also picked up a Steamtank to turn into a Scraplauncher.

Has anybody still in the TOFP actually painted less figures than me so far? I'm on 15 Dwarves in 4 months!

I'm on 15 too...

03-01-2011, 20:28

UNIT: Black orc big boss battle standard bearer on boar

BACKGROUND/THEME: None what so ever. Just painting all the remaining stuff I got.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Chopped up the blastic boss set a bit. Made the flag single handed and straightened his back, so that he isn't looking at the sky.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Getting closer to having painted everything that's standing around black.

TOTAL: 513

03-01-2011, 22:10
Nothing for me :(

It's not a joker because I'm ahead at least, but after painting 115 guardsmen in a month, and forgetting my paints the one week I was free to paint stuff for the tale, I have nothing to show you.

Most likely this will be the same for the next two months but I'll do my best to sneak something in where I can.

And I'll leave comments for all the other entries of course :D

03-01-2011, 22:13
Confessor Atol missed the deadline.......

Month 4, Progress!

I actually forgot about this last Month and was then Ill for a while, so hadn't really done much painting till last week.

On the High Elf front, I painted this chap, my Nagarythe Noble:
Shadow Armour

He's a minor conversion from of Selafyn (I think thats the name they gave him), swapped his shield for a bow from the tiranoc chariot crew and his sword for a slightly more ornate one, I think its from the High elf dragon kit.

His bow arm isn't done yet, that was sort of a last minute thing (his original shield arm kept falling off, so I gave him a bow, as thats what he'll usually be using). His sword is varnished chaos black, with tin bits for the details on the blade, chaimail is drybrushed tin bitz, leg armour is again varneshed chaos black, as is his breastplate. Skin is tallarn flesh washed with flesh wash then with sepia and his hair is fortress greay to start with, then chestnut ink and finally washed devlan mud.

Should hopefully catch up with painting this month, got some of the lovely new White lion for xmas, which I'm quite looking forward to painting.

Army 2: Beastmen

I really havn't eebna ble to bring myself to paint beastmen much recently, my colour scheme started yo annoy me, then a few days ago, I was messing about with skin tones, and came up with a colour scehem I quite liked.

Still very much work in progress, but I'm determined to finiseh them in the next few days.

Fairly simple colour scheme, but I like how they turned out, paint all flesh and fur areas with tallarn flesh, devlan mud it all and then wash fur areas with Sepia wash, sort've makes them look ginger really, the Horror, Ginger beastmen ; )

First The Wargor:

Minotaur Standard Bearer:

and this, anyone actually know what this is, its eitehr an old gor or and old Bestigor standard bear, think I got it off Ebay at some point:

03-01-2011, 22:44
Joker for me this month - Retail + xmas period = tired

04-01-2011, 02:28
WoC: 2,000+ points

UNIT: exalted hero of korn with 2 hand weapons + 10 hounds
BACKGROUND/THEME: Still havnt thought of anything
STILL TO DO: lots :(
HIGHS AND LOWS: Highs is i have not played a joker yet, lows all these were done in one go so i havnt really done any painting or modeling for a few weeks
MODELS SO FAR: Giant (225) + 20 Chaos Warriors with champ and standard (374) + 10 Hounds with scaly and posion (50) + sorc lvl 2 on steed (186) + Exalted hero of korn with 2 hand weapons (129) + 10 hounds (50)

04-01-2011, 11:41
ARMY : Wood Elves - 1000 Points (Boys)

UNIT: 8 Dryads; wardancer musician

BACKGROUND/THEME: Supposed to be all elf, but I could resist assembling and painting up some dryads.

PAINTING: Dryads - Charadon granite basecoat; some washed with devlan mud, some with scorched brown/DA green mix; highlights involved basecoat with either kommando khaki, catachan green or graveyard earth mixed in, final highlights with kommando khaki.

BASING: Not done.

STILL TO DO: Bases, eyes could do with more work to make them glow a little, as could the spite, which is just washed at the moment. Will go back at a later date.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I enjoyed experimenting to get a dark bark colour. Low is that I spent two months on these when I originally planned a basecoat wash approach to get them done quickly. Also, after the experimenting was over it became a bit of a chore highlighting such a murky palette, I'm quite pleased with how they came out so still a positive.

POINTS : Dryads (96), Wardancer musician (25) = 121

TOTAL POINTS : 121 + 212 = 333 (3 months and 1 Joker)

Dark Apostle
04-01-2011, 14:48
Unfortunately a joker for me this month as well. But next month... ;)

04-01-2011, 15:23
Well... I wasn't planning on it, but I am afraid my Treeman is getting the 2 month treatment. It's still a respectable 200+ point model, so no need for a joker. I wanted to finish it within a month though...

Chicken Pig
04-01-2011, 15:49
A joker for me as well, other armies just got in the way. But given that I am doing Warriors of Chaos I should be able to claw them back. Well done to those that have done 4 months in a row.

04-01-2011, 16:12
Well this month was disappointing...probably should have brought my painting stuff home from school.

A Joker for me this month, though I should be able to buy it back in the next month or so.

@Harry or whomever is running this - I want to add on another army, Warriors, to help keep me from losing interest in what I'm doing now. Happened to me last year in the Tale of Warmahordes on the PP forums...too much Cryx :/

04-01-2011, 20:59
Just posting to say I'm afraid I have to drop out - been swamped with exams for the past 2 months and I'm all out of jokers. Good luck to everyone else!

04-01-2011, 22:21
Well, I hate to say it but I'm dropping out. I did the switch from beasts to wood elves last month, but now I've got to switch to painting Warriors for a tournament for next month and its too damn impolite of me to change to a third army and then change back in a couple months. Good luck to everyone else. Keep painting, I know I shall (just not here ;D )

05-01-2011, 02:52
Man, I hate to contribute to the disappointment chain, but I'm dropping out as well. Too much going on, and the little time I have for painting has been spent on other projects.
Sorry everyone, keep up the good work.

05-01-2011, 06:16
ARMY : Goblins
UNIT: Doom diver + fanatics

BUILD/CONVERSION: Doom diver is made from an empire mortar and skull pass goblins. The main conversion is a stand made from sprue bits replacing the left wheel to make it feel a bit more ramshackle, however, I'm not terribly keen on the conversion, so I think in time it will be replaced by something a bit more solid.

PAINTING: The same as before, mostly bleached bone and emerald green with flesh wash and orc flesh wash respectively.

BASING: same as last month

STILL TO DO: crew need finishing off, and the ex-shaman (with the pot of mushrooms) needs a right hand, which will be holding a mushroom...just as soon as I get a bit of confidence in my tiny sculpting talents. The fanatics bases still need doing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: High - nice to be painting something which isn't just bog standard night goblins. Low - I'm not over excited by the result, might well need looking at again once I've got back into painting properly, post-christmas. Another small high is that I got a lovely new camera for christmas, the attached low being that I haven't yet got it all under control, hence the tiny depth of field on this month's photos. Hopefully that'll be sorted by next month, however other than this slight problem, I'm happier with the photo results this month...not quite so yellow.

POINTS : doom diver (80) + 3 fanatics (75) = 155

TOTAL POINTS : 400 + 155 = 555 (still ahead, but once again, this is due to painting expensive models)

DICE ROLL : 3 (still no point in a talisman of protection for me)

Doom diver

For next month, it's likely to be either a rock lobba, or some squig hoppers (likely to be used in a squig herd for the time being).

05-01-2011, 08:07
ARMY : Tomb Kings : 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: Tomb Scorpion

BACKGROUND/THEME: My tomb queen Isis likes to keep certain 'pets'. She has a pair of Tomb Scorpions that she 'adores' like pets. They were made by putting two of her most trusted lich priests in their constructions. So they can be with her forever.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Pretty much a normal tomb scorpion. On the base I added old school tomb swarm scorpions. Figured that would combine nicely.

PAINTING: My usual tactic for bone. Though I added more detail and more dark between the bones cause everythign is just bigger. I layered several colors of green on the poisoned stinger. On his back (the picture doesnt show very well) is a lich priest wrapped in purple-ish bandages, the color of my tomb queen.

BASING: With putty I made a little hill. I added some dead grass, undercoeat with desert yellow and added a few old school tomb swarm scorpions to add to the feel. A little pile of skulls made the scorpion balance a lot better and puts him up that little bit to make him look more imposing.

STILL TO DO: I am not happy with the highlighting on the scorpion yet. I want to give it a few layers of work more I think. It's kinda tricky cause my normal skeletons would be finished at this stage, but this one is much bigger. I do want it all to look like a whole though.

HIGHS AND LOWS: The stinger came out very nice. I found painting so much 'bone' to be a major b*tch though.

TOTAL POINTS : 503 + 85 = 588 (3 months and a joker)

NEXT UP: A unit of skeleton spearmen (with command)

Desert Rain
05-01-2011, 12:37
I'll have to pull another JOKER this month. I've kinda lost the spark for warhammer altogether it seems. Maybe it will be back soon, otherwise I'll probably have to drop out.

06-01-2011, 08:16
ARMY : Goblins

THEME: goblins with a few various monsters brought along. Starting from scratch as I have moved to Australia from N Ireland and left all my models behind

UNIT(s): 7 Night Goblins with spears and shields including command group, converted night goblin bigboss and a troll

BUILD/CONVERSION/BASING: bigboss made out of a standard bearer, some carving and a hook from the boarboyz sprue

PAINTING: liche purple, warlock purple and 1:1 warlock purple/tenticle pink for robes on night goblins. Foundation orange and foundation yellow on the hoods. Various shades of lightening blue on the troll

STILL TO DO: bases need static grass, don’t have any at the moment

HIGHS AND LOWS: I think this troll looks better than the river trolls last month, easier to paint too.

TOTAL POINTS : 122 for this month 404pts overall

06-01-2011, 09:35
Nothing to show this month. I'm working on my camp followers (aka a horde of halberdiers) painting them all at once and have nothing finished. I not sure if that is technicaly a joker or if I can count the unit as a two month project to be reported next month. Either way - next month I'll (hopefully!) have a cool unit to show you!

06-01-2011, 09:50

UNIT: High Elf Mage.

BACKGROUND/THEME: Prince Eravin has been dispatched by the Phoenix King to reclaim and defend a lost Elven City that has risen from under the sea. Home to numerous magical artefacts, the island has drawn other attention as well...

BUILD/CONVERSION: All models are straight out of the box.

PAINTING: I have decided to paint my High Elves almost ghost-like. Very pale colours and using no gold. Silver, blue, turquoise and grey will be used the most. Hair will be either a pale blonde or white. Skin a bone-like colour. The Mage's eyes are blue with a white pupil.

BASING: Painted goblin green with flock and static grass added. Simple!

STILL TO DO: Now my characters are done, I'm going to plow on with the infantry. Expect more Swordmasters and Phoenix Guard next month and maybe a Dragon Prince or 2.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No lows except the Joker I had to play last month. Still enjoying painting these guys.

POINTS : 180 for Level 2 Mage and magic items.

TOTAL POINTS : 611 in total

06-01-2011, 15:45
Love that colour scheme Fanny Crowbar, it really caught my eye! I look forward to seeing your SMs and White Lions :)

06-01-2011, 18:33
Page 3 is a bad one! I've been in two minds the last few days, play my last joker or drop out of the tale. Unfortuantly it looks as if, I'm going to have to drop out. My vamps, have taken a bit of a back seat of late to my dark elves, along with some new money issues I really lack the time now, point in case my two weeks off over xmas/ny I did nothing.

Sorry guys, I'll be checking the thread when I can, so good luck to every one :)

06-01-2011, 21:41
Here be goblins.

50 night goblins with spears: 200 pts
Nets: 35 pts
2 bosses: 16 pts
2 musicians: 8 pts

Month 4 total: 267 pts

Things missing: better pictures and the two standard bearers... I'm repainting the banners to match.

Total total: 898 pts

Dice roll: 1

07-01-2011, 01:33
ARMY: Ogre Kingdoms - Boys

UNIT: 2 Gorgers

BACKGROUND/THEME: Twin brother's discarded at birth into the underground labyrinths. Not sure on a name yet though. All I've managed to narrow it down to is 'The Brothers ***' or 'The *** Twins'.

BUILD/CONVERSION: One of them is straight out of the blister while the other has had it's pose modified so it wasn't identical (twisted the torso slightly, left arm lowered)

PAINTING: The skin was Dheneb Stone with a touch of Hormagaunt Purple (maybe 8:1), Dheneb Stone, Dheneb Stone and Astronomicon Grey (maybe 2:1).

BASING: MiniNatur product.

STILL TO DO: Base rims and blood 'strings' on the converted one. They are done on the stock one but you can't really see them.

HIGHS AND LOWS: It feels fantastic being able to sit down and get back into painting but not having done much of late means these aren't my best work.

POINTS : 2x 75 = 150

TOTAL POINTS : 276 (Call it three months and a Joker :shifty:)

On a side note, I'll be bringing a favourite army from a past TOFP back into play in the next month :shifty:.

07-01-2011, 04:57
Just checking in, with the holidays and the painting I have been able to sneak in it's been busy. Anyway, I have Knights and an Engineer just waiting for some decent pictures.

07-01-2011, 07:51
Unfortunately I have to bow out of the tale. Combining this with the 40k-part has been proven to taxing for my limited painting time.

07-01-2011, 12:16
Just chiming in to say I have finished this month's just awaiting pictures :) . I also have gotten quite a bit of work done - repainting my previous entry, some marauder horsemen and some chaos knights.

07-01-2011, 13:09
Time for comments!

ScytheSwathe: Great start and welcome to the tale!

Tonberry: Couldn't tell the polycement disaster, so your painting worked! Fantastic job on the griffon's eyes.

gaarew: love the background story... made me laugh ;). Nice clean painting. Scots wha hae!

Lord Shadowheart: Welcome back, and hope you feel better. Nice work on the flesh areas of your beastmen.

Maglok: Fellow Tomb Kings! I love scorpions. Can understand how you feel about painting bones, I tried that many years ago. These days, I spray on white undercoat and Army Painter does the rest! Nice job on the scorp. :)

Rolled a 5, but realized not too many people to comment on, so I took the liberty of commenting on some of the stuff I really liked as well as those who forgot to roll.

07-01-2011, 16:41
Looks like I am out of the tale, just no time to paint. Good luck to those still in!

07-01-2011, 17:39
Hello boys and girls.

I'm gonna have to joker this month, since all my painting time got swallowed by the holiday festivities :cries:

07-01-2011, 18:34
I know what that's like. Slow week for painting due to tons of activities (and the associated hangovers).

Will be posting proper pics of my Dwarfs and whatnot soon, I swear :D

07-01-2011, 19:16
Comments! (page 1 and 2)

Harry: Very lovely dragon. I can never get white right, so whenever I see someone else do it I'm always in awe. The old wraiths look funny. That VC army is going to have a lot of character when you are done. Those old goblins look better than the new ones :p

doc_cthulhu: Love the free hand. Good conversion (even if it is simple).

Rik a Kadrin Kazad: Something about roses and WoC just doesn't go together...

Ego Ninja: Love the tones in both armies. Trolls make great space fillers in NG units.

Purplebeard: The dwarf on the left needs a bigger axe ;) Although I'm sure he's scaring the crap out of a pile of wood :p

ScytheSwathe: I actually just learned of the plastic white lions this week (I knew about the others but missed this one) so I'm loving just seeing them. Keep it up!

Paull: Great detail on the horse barding.

Tonberry: The purple looks off with the blue, but otherwise very well done.

Fechik: Looking good so far, and really you have most of it done already.

Hilte2: I'm the stakes were easy but they are a nice touch. Always thought the ones that game with the box looked too orderly.

someone2040: Liking the hot blooded look of the minotaur skin. I'm thinking they would look better if the minotaurs on the ends switched places. Looking forward to the bestigors.

Matrim_Cauthon: Good looking models all around. Infact this is the first time I noticed it has those guys in its hair. Other people have always just made it too dark to notice I guess...

Rikk: You made me sad... I had a BSB converted from that old guy and it was stolen :( Wil be nice to see when you're done. The squigs in the unit are a nice and fitting touch.

DeadIntheHead: All that swirl needs is a wash and it will bring out more of the detail.

juicytomatos: Your pictures aren't showing for some reason.

EmperorNorton: I love the noble. Why? Because that's how mine is set up :p Seriously though his shield looks glorious.

gaarew: The color scheme on the armor actually reminds me of IG Cadians ;) And it might be only 15 models, but it's a might 15 models!

Braad: I like the idea of the single handed banner, but I can't make out what the picture on it is? Flaming fist?

Malorian: Really? Nothing? How about you get off your fat butt and actually do something for once!

Lord Shadowheart: Odd that his arm kept falling off (and really annoying when you are trying to paint). A bow looks cooler anyway. I like the fur on the beastmen.

reddevil18: Don't get discouraged and keep at it. We're falling like flies here and need you!

Elfboy: Trees are always fun, but I really like the wardancer.

07-01-2011, 21:22
Month 4: Joker

08-01-2011, 04:17
ARMY: Daemons (Boys)

UNIT: 10 Bloodletters

BACKGROUND/THEME: Making a WFB army out of my 40k daemons, and working through problems of basing, different point costs and org slots. Filling out some Core is a big priority.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Mostly standard build, although some pieces may be repeated since I had multiple boxes mixed together along with Bloodcrusher leftovers.

Primed with Army Painter blood red (or whatever they call it) spray, followed by some hand touch-ups of Blood Red to make an even coat, then washed with Baal Red.

Teeth, claws, horns painted Dheneb Stone.

Metals painted Boltgun for steel "functional" parts, and Brazen Brass for everything else.

Eyes painted Iyanden Darksun.

Whole model was washed with Devlan Miracle... er, Mud.

Teeth/claws/horns highlighted Bleached Bone as usual.

Tongue painted Astronomican Grey, then washed Leviathan Purple.

BASING: Sand only. Will be painted VMC Flat Earth, drybrushed Astronomican Grey.

STILL TO DO: Bone highlights and tongues on some, bases on all.

HIGHS: Got another box worth of models (mostly) finished. Adds more core (or, I don't have to carry around the 10 metals to block out a unit of 20).

LOWS: I was planning to do some Tzeentch characters to finish up last month's Horrors unit, but I got stuck on a few painting choices. I was running short on time, so I copped out and spun up a chunk of something I had done before.

POINTS : 120 pts (Bloodletters x10). Command was done previously; these will just be used for two more ranks.

TOTAL POINTS : 239 pts. (out of 1000) Sadly, still short to earn back a Joker.

The first shows the state of things on my painting tray. Ignoring the random detritus on the left, you can see 7 bloodletters with a sad lack of bone highlights and tongue coloring, then 3 of their brethren who are much happier, lacking only the base.

- H8

Comment time!

@ Harry (HE): I have to say Harry, I think this is possibly your best work to date. The Ogre Maneater you did was impressive but this one takes the cake. Fantastic work.

@ Harry (VC): Nice work. What kind of banner is the middle guy going to get?

@ Harry (Empire): It was a great idea to vary the uniforms slightly as it really adds some variety to the unit. The socks aren't as eye-catching this month though :shifty:

@ Harry (O&G): Well that does make me want to get back to doing my Wolfrider army again! Most impressive work again, Harry.

@ doc_cthulu: Very colourful indeed :p. Nice work all around.

@ Rik a Kadrin Kazad: Nice Warriors. For the Wizard I think you need to extend the shaft of the scythe to the ground to emphasise the fact that it is a Wizard's staff, at the moment it looks more like a weapon. As for the spell casting hand, what are you looking for? Open handed? Pointing finger? I've found it isn't too hard to sculpt a basic hand from scratch (just did it myself for a Goblim shaman) if you use wire to form the fingers before you use greenstuff)

@ Ego Ninja (Skaven): Excellent work. The barbequed rat really stands out with that flame colour!

@ Ego Ninja (O&G): Giving Harry a run for his money this month, eh? Very nice Night Gobbos.

@ Purplebeard: Not sure if it was intended or not, but the Thane with the purple banner has a really sinister look about him. Nice work. And I'm sitting on 4 models in 4 months :p.

@ ScytheSwathe: Welcome aboard! Those High Elves are really nice. Though I must point out that it is hard to believe a new entrant has painted over 6000pts :p

@ Paull: Most impressive, the shield in particular.

@ Tonberry: Well you've done well to disguise the botched face job because I can't tell that anything is amiss from those photos. Very impressive Lord.

@ Fechik: I think you need to go with a grottier yellow if you want to stick with that robe colour (which is quite nice IMO). I wouldn't see Plague Monks having robes as 'clean' as the rest of a Skaven horde anyway.

@ Hilte2: Very nice, but I think the bases need a little something but it could just be that the stake-in-the-ground-thingies are teh same colour as the dirt.

@ someone2040 (BoC): Great work. I'm quite looking forward to seeing the Bestigor's actually.

@ someone2040 (HE): You've got a lot more patience than I do to freehand all of those shields!

@ Matrim_Cauthon: Excellent work. A very impressive paint job

@ Rikk: Not much to say about the Daemon in its current state but the Night Goblins look really good. Gobbla with blue skin seems to make the mouth seem larger...

@ DeadInTheHead (HE): Nice work. I think the 'swirly thing', as you so adequately put it, would be improved with more shading (and with a more vibrant colour)in the recesses. At the moment it looks more like a petrified tree (especially in the last picture) because of the earth tone -> white colouring.

@ DeadInTheHead (DoC): Good job on these. The blades are really impressive but I'm not sure I'm sold on the brass base rims.

@ juicytomatoes: Excellent work. I don't know what it is this month but it seems tto be that a lot of character's have really impressive shields. And I'd hazard a guess that you're either a fan of Monty Python or Discworld or both with background like that!

@ EmperorNorton (HE): Once again with people having impressive shields this month... Very nice painting once again, mate!

@ EmperorNorton (OK): These big guys really are shaping up to a nice army! Most impressive.

@ gaarew: Very nice. The warpaint looks really nice on the Ironguts.

@ Braad: A really effective conversion. How many more models are sitting around black? And more importantly, how many are grey/silver? :shifty:

@ Lord Shadowheart (HE): Very nice. It's odd seeing aAsure in black armour but if it works it works!

@ Lord Shadowheart (BoC): That is a very nice colour scheme you've come up with. It will be interesting to see a finished model like that.

@ reddevil18: Very nice. The Khorne scheme suits that model well.

@ Elfboy: Very impressive. These guys remind me of Arhalien's Asrai from an earlier TOFP but with a slightly brighter basing scheme.

@ sssk: Very nice. Reminds me that I need to try and get my grubby mits on some of the old fanatics for my Wolfriders...

@ Maglok: Good work. The green stinger definitely catches your eye. All the better to pincer you to death with :shifty:

@ smokemeakipper: Great work. You've defintely got quite a few different colours in your army based on that group shot!

@ Fanny Crowbar: I'm going to echo the other's praise for your colour scheme. First time I remember seeing such a 'sky blue' colour used.

@ roulmesp: Very nice. I defintely dont envy painting so many models in a month.

@ Hatemonger: Good work. It surprises me to say this, but that over saturation of red in your scheme just works. I;m not sure why, but it does.

I know what that's like. Slow week for painting due to tons of activities (and the associated hangovers).

Will be posting proper pics of my Dwarfs and whatnot soon, I swear :D

If I'm right, you also started with high elves, just never posted anything for them. What about those? Still in?

Braad: I like the idea of the single handed banner, but I can't make out what the picture on it is? Flaming fist?

Indeed a flaming fist. It depicts part of the image that I put on most of my banners, as if he carries the last remaining piece of a very large banner.

@ Braad: A really effective conversion. How many more models are sitting around black? And more importantly, how many are grey/silver? :shifty:

How many? Well, let's see...
Black: 3 savage boar boyz (just started painting those), the Azhag model and his wyvern, 4 spider riders, the gobbo big boss on gigantic spider, orc shaman on boar, orc BSB and the Gorbad ironclaw model.
Silver/grey/unassembled: 3 river trolls, 2 trolls, 1 snotling base and 5 new boar boyz.

That's about it...
Ow, and I got a few special/weird models (like the orc scavengers and arrer boyz in the direct order only line, about 10 foot models in total) hanging around for future stuff. Haven't got a real plan for those yet, but I bought them just to make sure I have the models in case they discontinue the line, or because I came across an auction on ebay.

I'll try to pop in comments later today.
I planned the whole day for my own, so hopefully it will be productive.

Can I call a joker for Cathexis for this month, he's painted something up, but is in Oz for 3 weeks - lucky sod

08-01-2011, 13:11
@Malorian: Hm, I'm not sure what's wrong. Maybe the photo hosting service got disrupted or something at the time you were viewing it.

@Doi: Thanks for the compliment! Monty Python and Terry Pratchett both! ;)

ARMY : Lizardmen : 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: 15 Saurus Warriors including full command.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight out of the box.

PAINTING: The Skin was Graveyard Earth. Scales was Scab Red. Gold was a mix of a Vallejo colour Brazen Brass which was mixed with P3 Pig Iron and then shaded with Brown Ink.

BASING: Graveyard Earth, drybrushed with Kommando Khaki. Edges were Goblin Green and then add static grass to finish.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No lows really, just highs. They were incredibly quick to paint and look lovely all ranked

POINTS : 210

On to the pictures.

And an army shot.

Next up for me either 15 more Saurus, or three units of Skinks Skirmishers.

Right month 4. Happy New Year all. Painting took a hit and lots of real life stress kicking in but managed to get some done. And managed to start on the posse of 30 ungors for next month (assuming I can finish fast enough!).
But a couple more games and a 10K chaos Vs empire/HE game later this month that I'll be posting on my batrep thread.

With a terrific roaring and crashing of wings the jabberslythe summoned by the shamans crashed through the forest landing amidst the tribe that scattered in terror as their minds broke and skin melted away and the beast feasted. Borgash cursed in the dark tongue roaring above the panicked braying trying to instill some order and rerassemble his portion of the herd.
Askor halfhorn ducked behind the trees motioing his fellow raiders to join him as they slinked away through the trees, his fleshy wings catching on branches. Askor wasn't going to stay here and be eaten... not when he'd spotted that farmstead only a nights march away...

Beastmen A: Jabberslythe/ Trasnformation of Kadon beast = 275
Beastmen B: 10 Ungor raiders w/FC, Wargor w/HA, GW= 162

Only a few extra arms on the raiders and some gargoyle wings. He was originally going to be my harpy until I found how fiddly that was and opted for the faster and easier flying monkey option. Just means the half horn can feel special.

Busy month with stress in real life, but managed to get some done. Found the big flappy one quite hard to paint as wasn't too sure how to paint large expanses of flat skin so not entirely happy with it. THough I have a different jabber to paint soon.

Dice Roll = 2

The Wargor

Sorry for the late entry.

ARMY : Empire : 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: Arch Lector Hansmier

BACKGROUND/THEME: Arch Lector Hansmier is a veteran of many minor battles who has dedicated his life to the defense of the people of Middenhiem and in the service of Ulric. Recently he received a vision of a great threat that would strike at the people of The Empire from out of the Mountains surrounding the Brass Keep. With a blessing from the High Priest of Ar-Ulric and granted support by Boris Todbringer, Arch Lector Hansmier set out at the head of the force dedicated to stopping any threat from the Brass Keep before it can reach beyond the mountains.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Old Priest of Ar-Ulric model on foot.

PAINTING: Undercoated light grey. I built up the blue robes from Enchanted Blue by adding Regal Blue for the shadows and Skull White to the highlights. The silver-ish metal is a secret combination I came up with to represent Meteoric Iron. There were a lot of details picked out in all different colors and I don’t remember all of them at this point. The wolf pelt and claws started as Tausept Ochre, which were then built up with thin layers of Bleached Bone and then Skull White.

BASING: Nothing much done there. I am still trying to figure out what I should do with them all. Cobbled road, dirt road, rocks and debris, tall grass, bushes, snow…so many options.

STILL TO DO: The base.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I love the way my metal worked out, it looks just like the pictures of meteor ore I looked up. Also, the blending on the robes worked out very well. My only lows would be that I didn’t really make up any points and I didn’t get my knights prepared for painting like I had planned.

POINTS: Arch Lector with Biting Blade (5), Dawn Armor (35), Talisman of Endurance (30) and Potion of Speed (5) = 203 points

Total This Month : 203

TOTAL POINTS : 685 (Three months painting and No Jokers(?))

To do this month: I’m not entirely sure yet. I had planned to paint 30 Spearmen, but things look like they will be a lot busier than I planned. Additionally, I have revamped my army list a bit and no longer need the Spearmen. I think I will either end up using a Joker or painting up a character or two.

09-01-2011, 02:40
Very busy this month, but i did find time to convert and paint a chaos exhalted champion

Conversion- The conversion wasn't very complex, but im happy with how it turned out. I got a spare weapon, shield and head from the chaos knights box and cut them to fit a chaos warrior body.

Points- 110

Total points- 395

Dice roll- 1

I jokered or did nothing last monthbut I´m back on track now. I have finished Two Dragon Princes, a mage, Something around 6 Swordmasters and 5 White Lions since last time so now I have a grand total of about 1000 Points if you discount the Teclis (I fear I will never be allowed to play with such a strong char)

The whole army:

Full unit of 10 Swordmasters, the bannerbearer might become my BSB if I get another IoB:

First 5 Lions

09-01-2011, 08:36
TOTAL POINTS : 685 (Three months painting and No Jokers(?))

We're in month 4, so you got 1 joker if you painted 685.
If I got it right, you didn't post anything in december.

ARMY : Empire : 1000 Points (boys)

UNIT: Cannon Crew (carried over from last month) + Engineer

PAINTING: I ran out of tausept ocre so my yellows ended up really muted and washed out...I guess the guns crews are veterans!

Oh, and the engineer ended up with a Cindy Crawford style mole on his cheek...

HIGHS AND LOWS: I'm really enjoying layering over a black undercoat. I normally don't let any of the undercoat show through, but I'm really digging the cartoony effect at the moment

POINTS: 100 (1/2 the cannons) + 40 for the engineer

NEXT MONTH... hopefully some horses!

All together:

Rik a Kadrin Kazad

@Malorian: I'll make sure to paint the rose black or dead'ish, as he'll be a wizard of the death or shadow lore (unless I mark him with tzeentch).

@Doi: Thanks for the tip, I'll consider making a staff of it (though, WoC wizards are a bit fighty and hence use weapons - but I'm thinkin you're right and that it'll make him look more like the reaper as intended...) For the hand, I bought an empire wizard box, hoping to use one of the cool ones from that box for my convertion - only to find out that all the cool wisardry hands are right ones, and my wizard is a lefty... So if anyone knows a good wizardy left hand out there, I'll be greatful of any tip.. :)

09-01-2011, 17:11
Sorry its a bit late, but heres what I have done for this month.
For my warriors of chaos I have done three Khorne ogres but I used minotaur models as I like the model much more than the chaos ogres. The bases still need to be cleaned up slightly.

This comes to 165pts.

I will make up this in the following months.

I was intending to finish my khorne chaos warriors, but they fell of a table and needed some repairs due to a younger relative!!! They should be ready to for the next month.

On the dwarfs I have done some ironbreakers. I still need to do the shields but Ill get that done for next month with the remaining models for the unit.

So this should be 162pts.

Again as above Ill make up the rest next month.

For next month Im intending to do a unit of miners which are currently sitting in front of me about half done. I started them early last month.

Found it very hard this month as was getting distracted by painting my 40k armies, which I had been neglecting recently.

Sorry about the pics especially the dwarf ironbreakers as the flash is not helping, as in real life there much darker than is shown.

09-01-2011, 19:09
I got my chariots done! But, it's really nasty outside so pics will have to wait until the morning.

09-01-2011, 20:13
I will have to use my other joker this month *fail*

09-01-2011, 23:10
Didn't post last month, so I'll play my second Joker for last month.

ARMY : High Elves : 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: Lion Chariot, 5 Archers

BACKGROUND/THEME: Chracian Themed.

BASING: As usual, basing saved til I figure out what I want to do for the bases on the army as a whole..

STILL TO DO: Bases, another couple coats on the underside of the lion cloaks.

HIGHS AND LOWS: HIGH Finally found some motivation to pick up the brushes again, and finish some models!

POINTS : Lion Chariot- 140, 5 Archers- 55 = 195

TOTAL POINTS : 286 (4 months painting)

Hopefully finishing 12 archers in the next week, and painting my Archmage to catchup.

10-01-2011, 12:49
I have hit a bit of a wall with my painting this month, so many 40K games and tournaments to prepare for has seen my dark Elves suffer! (Pun intended:D)

So far I've used 2 Jokers and painted 400pts of my 2000pt target which should just keep me in the tale:(.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through 2x 20 repeater Xbows so I should hopefully catch up a bit by next month.

10-01-2011, 14:40
Army: Orcs and Goblins: 2nd joker I'm afraid.

Army: High Elves (2000 points, Men)

Unit: 3 Tiranoc Chariots and a Hero

points: 199 for a total of 797? points (0 Jokers for these guys. Next month they will get one as I concentrate on the O+G's)

Highs and lows: I like how the freehand stuff turned out, and that it only took a few hours for each chariot. Lows were painting the horses, which took me days because I hate painting horses.

Still to do: Basing :(

Dice Roll: 5

10-01-2011, 14:41
And the last chariot really quick here:

I still need to add a crew member to this chariot as it looks way to empty right now

Ok, this is silly... I have alredy completed my army, and posting a few pics of it each month seems... stupid. You can already see all of the pics in my personal plog. I´m not sure if this means I´m dropping out or if I "won" or something, but it doeas mean I will not be posting pics in the following progress threads. Anyway, thanks to all who commented on my stuff, and good luck with your own armies. I leave you with a pic of my completed army and a link to my plog.

ARMY : Warriors of Chaos : 2000 Points (MEN)

UNIT: Completed army

BACKGROUND/THEME: The overall theme is red. Red and Khorne.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Various, such as converted juggernauts, marauder unit fillers and metal halberds for the warriors.

PAINTING: Red. Lots of red, and more red (skorne red/baal red). :)

BASING: Sand painted scorched browm, drybrushed bestial brown and then bestial brown mixed with bleached bone. Adeptus battlegrey on the pepples, followed by astronimicn grey. Yellow and green static grass.

STILL TO DO: Nothing, the army is completed.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I am amazed that I could do it, finish an army containing som pretty heavily converted models and with a rather complex painting scheme. Best part was definitely the juggernaut-monted characters, while the worst had to be the warriors (they were so many).

POINTS : Ca 2000p

@Harry: So many models... How can you paint so much and still keep such a high level of detail on everything? I especially like the handgunners, very nice!

@Fechik: Nice start on the furnace, eavy metal standard so far.

@Hilte2: I love the old bretonnian models!. You have chosen a good colour for them, very crisp painting. I like the slight variations of their uniforms.

@Matrim_Cauthon: Awesome shaggoth! So vibrant, it practically jumps out of the screen!

@EmperorNorton: Nice, the flames on the shield look very good. Fgreat colour scheme, the muted pink looks really nice.

@Lord Shadowheart: Sweet beastmen, nice skintone. The standard bearer is a regular gor standard bearer. I have one myself that I made into a wargor. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the banner.

@Reddevil18: Ah, a fellow "red warriors of chaos"-painter! Good looking model, the brass horns and pale skulls contrast well with the red armour. The boils on the hounds look disgusting (in a good way).

@Elfboy: You have really managed to make your dryads look like trees. Very nice! The orange leaves stand out well against the pale grey-brown branches.

@Hatemonger: Devlan miracle indeed... :)

@Illuminus: Nice bright colours, the metal looks a bit flat though, almost stone-like. Nice wolf pelt.

11-01-2011, 00:29
Holy bejesus, that was quick. Granted it's WOC, a bit on the light side regarding model count, but still that was very quick to finish up one of the better looking armies from the Tale so far. My Dwarfs are (naturally) bitter and jealous, but the Empire moreso since there's more of them to paint and it's not nearly as fun as my Dwarfs :D

BTW I tried to take pictures the other day and my battery died. The charger's indicator light is blinking super duper fast and it doesn't seem to actually charge my battery. As I'm not exactly thrilled with the quality of my camera at the moment anyway, I might be stuck for a while, until my income tax rebate cheque comes this spring from the feds. I have my sights set on a trip, a DSLR and possibly some aggressive winter tires for my shiny new RWD vehicle. My buddies who drift/race want to teach me how to drive sideways this spring, but I have no desire to do so in the winter and off the track.

Anyway, not impressed with this Nikon piece of garbage. The wifi sync never worked properly, the lens wasn't the greatest, ISO settings were complete trash and now the charger/battery is effed. Skipping back to Canon I go :D

11-01-2011, 05:46
ARMY: Empire

UNIT: Almost Finished Helstorm

BACKGROUND/THEME: Averland. Because I like pain in the **** color schemes.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Fairly stock. Top part of kit will remain separate to allow for Helblaster if I feel like changing things up. And crew member had the three bowling ball tray converted to be a notepad for calculations. Yes, there is actual long division and a graph with trajectories on it. I hate freehand but that was different enough to make me want to follow through with it.

PAINTING: Lots of metal. And black. And some yellow and browns.

BASING: Sand. I haven't described the colors yet, but I mix Chardon Granite and Tallarn Flesh, then drybrush bone.

STILL TO DO: Finish the black really. Photos are out of date but as I mentioned earlier my camera is dead to the world so I can't update right now. Oh and once it's varnished, static grass. Definitely static grass.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Was very fun once I started actually working on it. I watched episodes of Chuck Season 3 and listened to a few eps of my friends' Warhammer podcast (Jaded Gamercast (http://jadedgamercast.com), highly recommended). This army is definitely falling behind pace though. Several units not quite finished (because I start the month's project on like the 25th usually).

POINTS: 110 I think. Too lazy to check the book.

TOTAL POINTS: Uh... generously 392.

So sorry about the quality of the photo and the lack of completion visible in it. Goddamn Nikon piece of crap battery. I am seriously considering getting the smallest point and shoot I can find (within reason and with decent ISO sensitivity for low light real world use), and then probably getting a Canon T2i when the T3i comes out and drops prices even lower for the existing models.

11-01-2011, 05:54
ARMY: Dwarfs

UNIT: The other 5 front rank models from the Warrior Horde!

BACKGROUND/THEME: Old, slightly silly, and drunk if at all possible.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Stock old models.

PAINTING: Same as always, mixing crazy color schemes with muted tones and whatnot. The more I paint, the more I realize that P3 Trollblood Hilight is as central to my painting style today as Scorched Brown was ~3 years ago.

BASING: Sand and cork, snow on the way later. Same old story, lol.

STILL TO DO: Goddamnit, I just noticed I STILL haven't painted the axe on the Champion.

HIGHS AND LOWS: Honestly, it was pure joy. Just sad that I wasn't able to spend more time painting Dwarfs before holidays (and the damn Averlanders) cut my time short with them.

POINTS: 65 + whatever runes I'd put on this banner.

TOTAL POINTS: A much less fraudulent claim of 391.

DICE ROLL: Another 2. Seriously, if I can't roll anything higher than a 2 the next time I play a game, I will be unimpressed.

I sorta can't believe that I got a decent photo to show you. My camera literally shuts off after like 2 seconds of being turned on, and yet I managed to snap an in focus photo with no tripod before it cut out for the third time. So damn lucky!!

The plan for this month: Play a joker for the Dwarfs and actually get some honest to god units finished for the Empire. Possibly a Stank to shore up my numbers, but actually finishing the mostly finished models is #1.

11-01-2011, 17:11
I´m not sure if this means I´m dropping out or if I "won" or something...

Aaaand... we have a WINNER!

No, seriously, you won your own price, as the whole point is to motivate each other to paint and show our great work to a large public, and it seems to have worked for you. You'll be noted as 'done' now in the tale tables, and when the year is over, you'll forever be remember in my signature.

You could stop now...

But you can also go on with another army!

11-01-2011, 17:21
Paint High Elves or Khemri because I can't :D They need love, too.

11-01-2011, 18:49
Hello everyone!

I have had a regular chaotic christmas and new years eve and i hope you had yours too, full of people and happening, food and drinks.

Thus i have not had time to do anything at all on my minis since the giant but this i knew would happen so i am allready at 755points i think it is. Next month i will post something again. Not sure what yet though. Something worth around 245 points? Hmm...

Well we will see!

Cheers everyone and good job so far!

11-01-2011, 19:47
14 Warriors with shields? 5 Chaos Knights? 2.2 Hellcannons? :)

Or ya know, like 40 Marauders w/ gw's. I hear those are pretty decent lol.

11-01-2011, 20:54
Several Jokers and 'drop outs' BUT loads of great painting and some great looking armies in the making. Well done to everyone still in this. You can see by the number of drop outs it is not as easy as it sounds so if you are keeping up with this you should feel pretty good about yourself for sticking with it when so many others have struggled ... especially with Christmas.

I have updated the first post with the 'Table' .... Thanks to Braad for a) producing it and B) pestering me to get it posted.
My apologies for the delay with this.

My apologies for the delay with this.

The point values for my armies given in the table kinda don't fit at all.

What I have done so far:

High Elves
Month 1: 12 Swordmasters incl. Command (210 points)
Month 2: 6 Shadow Warriors incl. Champion & 1 Noble & 2 Swordmasters (223 points)
Month 3: 2 Repeater Bolt Throwers (200 points)
Month 4: 1 Noble & 1 Mage (185 points)
Total so far: 818 points

Ogre Kingdoms 1
Month 1: 5 Iron Guts incl Command (290 points)
Month 2: 5 Bulls with additional hand weapons incl. Command (245 points)
Month 3: 2 Leadbelchers (110 points)
Month 4: 1 Bruiser (130 points)
Total so far: 775 points

Ogre Kingdoms 2
Month 1: 5 Iron Guts incl Command (290 points)
Month 2: 6 Bulls with Iron Fists incl. Command (290 points)
Month 3: 2 Leadbelchers (110 points)
Month 4: 1 Tyrant (200 points)
Total so far: 890 points

11-01-2011, 22:06
Thanks. I am sure Braad will fix it for next time.

Do check the table for accuracy. (If you are bothered. :D)

Comments for the 1's, and a few others.

@Tonberry: The face doesn't look melted from what I can see, so apparently you covered it up well enough. I assume the gap you mention is just behind the eagle's head, otherwise I don't know where you mean. I wouldn't worry too much about it, although I know sometimes one little flaw like that can nag you on an otherwise perfect model.

@Fechik: How are you making the kit interchangeable? I have a friend who wants to do the same thing.

@Rikk: You get a shout out for old-school daemons.

@DeadInTheHead: The elf mage turned out well. The cloak looks a bit flat. I was going to tease you about your apparant aversion to highlights and shading, but the staff and headdress are really nice, so whatever you're doing there, do more of it!
I like the glowy bits on the BL swords. Was the banner painted freehand?

@Braad: How is it that you can be a miniature gamer and not have piles upon piles of stuff left to paint? It's unnatural I say! If I painted as fast as Malorian and Harry combined, it would still take me years to finish.

@sssk: I like your Doom Diver interpretation.

@rorulmesp: Nice looking goblins. Good job on completing a block like that. Honestly I have no idea how you gobbo and skaven players can manage to paint so many models.

@Waagghh_Logan: Turned out well. Often simpler is better. I like the daemon face on the shield.

@SamVimes: Amazing freehand there. I love that you think the "empty" looking chariot is the one [i]with another chariot in it[i].

@Ister Flersson: Congrats on painting so much! You can't drop out now though: clearly you must raise your pledge to 6000 points and keep going.

- H8

BSB's really are shiny in the Tzeentch army. Can be very difficult to kill compared to other armies' BSB choices.

That was supposed to say 1.2 Hellcannons for 245 btw, my math is better than my typing ability I guess ;)

12-01-2011, 06:42

Comments time.

Firstly comments on the ones and whomevers work caught my eye:

@Purplebeard - Don't worry, I'm on 12 models painted (though a bloodthirster should count as 10 figures).

@rorulmesp - geat unit of gobbo's. One of my opponents plays a big unit of unpainted gobbo's, I'm sending him this pic to shame him into some action...

@Doi - love the skin tones on the gorgers.

@Hatemonger - I was quite lazy with the horns on my bloodletters, looking at yours is making me thing I should do something about it. I also quite like those bases all in red like that, but apparently I have dubious taste on these matters. Did you choose the flowery kitchen towels ? :p

@Waagghh_Logan - nice metalwork, shield and basing.

@Inquisitor Pariah - I really like these, the muted colours work really well.

Responses to my efforts to follow later.

Sorry, just a quick "Well done". I wish my painting were half way to other people's standards. Maybe in a few years after a few more tales....

And possibly as I posted late... but I did have month 4 points that are missing from the table. [Beastmen A = 275// Beastmen B = 162]

Giant comments thread incoming!

Page the First:

Harry – High Elves
Nice dragon! I always love to see how different people paint their dragons, I have 3 currently sat about waiting to be painted, I’m scared to make a start on such big models without being sure what to do, each one I see helps me figure out my own projects :D I don’t think the clothing needs much more, what I really like about this paint job its simplicity. On such a busy model you don’t want to over-do it with needless faff (I feel!), and it looks great as it is 
Harry – Undead
Dark Brown is a pita to highlight, I find adding a bit of Bilious Brown or Camo Green to highlight can help make them ‘pop’ a bit more, colour choice depends on what other colours you have on the models. In this case I’d be tempted to add a little of the green to echo your bases and provide a nice contrast to the purple.
Harry – Empire (how do you find the time to do all this O.o)
Nice work making these figs look different, a lovely looking unit and givem me some ideas for my own Empire army!
Harry – Orcs and Goblins
My only criticism here is the blood splatters on the wolves. Going over the pale fur its taken on a bit of a pink colour that looks really out of place. Maybe try making up a ‘blood mix’ add a bit or purple and green and inks/washes to red gore and use that instead? That a horrifying amount of wolf riders! Big grats getting through them all!

Doc_Cthulhu – Empire
Good work on the freehand banner, I really struggle with those, your wip shots are very helpful for showing the process behind it! Really like the ‘fool’ in the Hellblaster crew ^^

Rik a Kadrin Kazad – WoC
I wouldn’t worry too much about your Sorcerer holding an axe, he is a Chaos Sorcerer after all! I’d be tempted to lengthen the shaft of the scythe in his right hand though, it looks a bit imbalanced right now. I’ve done similar things with this model myself, its not too hard to drill out the hand and get a bit of brass rod or an end from a standard pole or spear in there. You could even leave most of the handle there with the leather wrapping and drill out the bottom of the haft.

Ego Ninja – Skaven
I love your painting style and the basing really sets off the red nicely, look forward to seeing more!
Ego Ninja – Orcs and Goblins
I’m not sold on the big red troll..  Other than that, I really like that gobo unit, really admire you guys painting giant units!

Purplebeard – Dwarves
Bleugh, stats! Nice dwarves though! And that’s a lot of BSBs! Whats coming up next month?

ScytheSwathe – High Elves
I noticed a few gems and such missing from your Lions and Spearelves, any plans to paint those? I’d go for a nice bright red to contrast against your white and cool blue scheme. Nice job getting so much done so far!

Paull – Brets
Completely agree with you about this beautiful model, my other favourite being the Bret Damsel (not the one with the mane of hair, the previous one with her sword in the air). I think your freehand is great! Don’t get too hung up on comparing your work to other peoples, there are some real pros on here – be proud of an excellent looking Green Knight!

Tonberry – High Elves
I really like the colours you’ve used on his helm, the blue and gold work wonderfully together, really striking. Good work covering up the face melt, I cant tell at all!

Fechik – Skaven
Gonna comment cos you posed pics: My advice is to go for a much darker looking yellow, base it off Scorched Brown. Because the robes and the yellow are such a similar colour tone its not popping off the model. Start your yellow much darker and I think you’ll get the results you’re looking for. Try warm earthy colours rather than the more primary shades. Really looking forward to seeing your Bell/Furnace in all its glory!

Hilte2 – Brets
I don’t see many people painting their brets blue, this is a refreshing change! Lovely work, and great job on the custom base, it really helps bring the whole unit together.

Someone2040 – Beastymen
I’m really sorry to say that I’m not a fan of the pink skin on those Minos. I blame the models for being so strategically shaved, but I think it makes them look a bit ‘cute and funny’ rather than ‘terrifying bone-crunching monsters’. The freehand on your banner is great, I’m looking forward to seeing what you choose to paint next.
Someone2040 – High Elves
That spear looks fine with all the others, great idea! I’d been wondering what to do with my spare command guys, this works really well.

Matrim_Cauthon – Chaos
I loved painting this model too, nice job you’ve done! The red scales work really well and will fit right in with a Khornate scheme.

Page the Second:

Rikk – Daemons
Yay! Retro ‘Thirster! Any plans for his base?
Rikk – Orcs and Goblins
Blue Squigs! I really like these guys, nice to see something different from the usual red.

DeadInTheHead – High Elves
Nice warm colour scheme on your mage, for the swirls on the base are you wanting it to be cold or warm? It looks kinda green in the photos, what did you use to paint it?
DeadInTheHead – Daemons
Love the bases and ‘lava swords’, what colours are you planning for the horns? Maybe dark red/black like cooling rock from a volcano?

Juicytomatoes – Tomb Kings
Really like the dusty look to these guys, like they just walked out of the sands!

EmperorNorton – High Elves
The pink always gets me on your models, really makes then stand out! I love the shielf detail, very neat and crisp!

EmperorNorton – Ogres
I do like the bright pants on your ogres, a great contrast to all that skin on show! Have you thought about using a different colour to edge your bases? The black makes them look a little unfinished.

Gaarew – Ogres
I really like the extra touches to these guys with the damaged armour, and the Scottish flag theme works really well! Can we see a ginger rinox PLEASE!

Braad – Orcs and Goblins
Nice chop job on this standard brearer, I hate that he usually ends up looking at the sky >.<

Lord Shadowheart – High Elves
A neat little conversion, I’m not keen on the original metal model, the post looks very strange, I might pinch your ideas here to turn mine into a shadow-warrior champion!

Lord Shadowheart – Beastmen
LOVE the ginger beastmen!

Reddevil18 – WoC
The brown on the cloak looks a little flat, it detracts from the rest of the model, maybe try using a dark wash to get some shadows in there?

Elfboy – Wood Elves
Everytime I see your stuff I want to get my Woodies out again ^^ I like the glow effect from the eyes, subtle.

Page the Third

Sssk – Goblins
I like the idea of your goblins launching themselves into the air using a mortar – messy!

Maglok – Tomb Kings
Nice touch on the poison coloured stinger, quite an eye catcher in all that bone! I used to find painting the odd piece gold on Tomb Scorpions helped relieve the bone-bordom, its kind of a ritual object with the mummified priest in there, so I imagined the Tomb Kings decorating it with gold leaf on the skull or tail etc… Maybe give that a go if you get bored with all the bone colour.

Smokemeakipper – Goblins
Like the troll, like the gobos, like last months trolls too! All in all a good looking army, cant wait to see a horde of those purple and yellow goblins!

Fanny Crowbar – High Elves
As mentioned earlier, I really like your colour scheme on this mage, very eye-catching indeed!

Rorulmesp - Goblins
There indeed be gobins! As I’ve mentioned earlier, I have no end of respect for all the horde painters out there – I’m currently being intimidated by 40 Empire Halberdiers, how do you do it!!!

Doi – Ogre Kingdoms
How about ‘The Pale Twins’? Hmmm, maybe I’m not so hot at naming things ^^ niec blood effect, works well on these models.

Page the Forth:

Hatemonger – Daemons
Those photos are a bit small, also, they appear to be on round bases? Do you have a plan to rebase these or make a jazzy movement tray?

Baggers – Lizardmen
Really, really like these Saurus. I go for bright cartoony colours on my lizards, but the more natural palette works really well! I really look forward to seeing this army expand.

KHolbourn – Beastmen
That Felbeast makes a great Jabberslythe! Good work!

Illuminus79 – Empire
Your story mentions the Arch Lector getting a vision from the mountains, perhaps decide on your bases to reflect this story idea?

Waagghh_Logan – WoC
Nice conversion, simple but effective! I notices you got a bit of sand on the edge of his base, maybe tidy it up a bit with a craft knife and re-edge the base? Character models deserve a bit of special treatment, they tend to pay it back in games I find ^^

Jardain – High Elves
Your snow bases complement the white on your models very nicely. Does your camera have a macro mode? The photos are unfortunately blurry.

Inquisitor Pariah – Empire
Haha, I like the little beauty spot that fella has, maybe a bit of rouge to go with it? ^^ I like the gritty metallics on your cannons, I have a mortar to paint soon so I’m pleased to have some war machines to look at to see how other people do it!

Hammer49 – Beastmen
I’m a little worried by the pinkish colour on these minos ^^ I’ll hold judgement til I see them finished!
Hammer49 – Dwarves
I have a particular hatred for Dwarves at present, far too tough! And ones covered in gleaming armor are the worst! These look friendly though… right? Those hammers in the air, just waving to say ‘Hi’…

Shep – High Elves
I’m always scared of painting my Lion Chariot, you’ve done a lovely job of yours, especially the pale lions! Any thoughts on your bases?

Page the Fifth:

SamVimes – High Elves
Those chariots are impressive! The freehand on the front is beautiful, did you draw it out beforehand? I’d love to know how you went about doing that.

Ister Flersson – WoC
Finished already? I’m impressed!

Jericho – Empire
I suffer with ‘starting late’ syndrome too! Hope you get this finished for next month!
Jericho – Dwarves
I particularly like the ‘gladiator dwarf’! It shows that you enjoyed painting these, lovely neat painting, theres a lot of love in that photo!

And now for the first time from me, Comments!!!
(ok maybe not first but there are months when i dont have time lol)

Sorry if they dont make sense or are just crap in general.

Page 1

Harry - That is an amazing dragon :)
I like the purple and gold on the wraiths, gives the model alot more detail
very nice choice of colours on the handgunners
How many wolves are you painting? :O

doc_cthulhu - Thats a very nice banner you got there, and the hell blaster looks awesome, but im not to sure on the colours on the others but i have only been painting korne stuff

Rik a Kadrin Kazad - Pink and white chaos warriors? Its something diffrent i suppose :)

Ego Ninja - very nice clean paint job, i like the warpstone on the back of the rat too lol

Nice gobbos, but going off that troll you do like unusal colours on your models, which isnt always a bad thing :)

Purplebeard - I like the banner, and its nice to see non white/black bearded drawfs

ScytheSwathe - Very nice work but im not sure i like the white axe shafts.

Paull - Very nice work with a limit palate :)

Tonberry - beautiful paint job but i think the base lets it down a bit.

Hilte2 - bit hard to see the models in that pic but i like the spike defence part

someone2040 - very nice but i think the shafts and bows could look a little more... woody?

Matrim_Cauthon - I really hope my shaggoth looks even half as good as that when i paint it

ARMY: Lizardmen

UNIT: Cold One Cavalry champion and standard bearer

12-01-2011, 20:50
@Braad: How is it that you can be a miniature gamer and not have piles upon piles of stuff left to paint? It's unnatural I say! If I painted as fast as Malorian and Harry combined, it would still take me years to finish.

Well, that's mainly because it started bugging me that some things just stood around for ages, without getting any paint. I also have the unwritten house rule that unpainted stuff does not get to go to the battlefield, so unpainted really means totally not used at all. So I figured I could just as well not buy stuff untill I painted all I got first.

Lowest point here are the 3 savage boar boyz I'm working on for next month: they have been standing around 6 years unpainted, out of 6,5 years of warhammer-time...

Also I'm very close to completing my army (only 2 years painting left or so...) and there's not much orcy stuff left to buy. March release will likely change that though...

The point values for my armies given in the table kinda don't fit at all.

Yeah, I know. I somehow missed your points in the third month, and from the totals you gave in the fourth month, I just fidgeted around with month 2 and 3 to make it work a bit...

But fixed it now, next month everything should be just fine!

Braad – Orcs and Goblins
Nice chop job on this standard brearer, I hate that he usually ends up looking at the sky >.<

Well, precisely my thoughts! How can you kill someone if your just looking at birds flopping by?

12-01-2011, 21:08
Yeah, I know. I somehow missed your points in the third month, and from the totals you gave in the fourth month, I just fidgeted around with month 2 and 3 to make it work a bit...

But fixed it now, next month everything should be just fine!

Thanks for fixing it and thanks for doing all the work with the tables.

Ok some comments going. I rolled a 3, and unfortunately don't have the time to respond to everyone this month. I will add Tomb Kings players though.

So here we go:

@Ego Ninja (Skaven): I love your blending, the skin looks 'eavy metal quality. I notice the top flames and the green on the small rat. The small rat just jumps out at you colorwise, while the top fumes look a bit odd. I totally love this though.

@Ego Ninja (O&G): Respect for anyone painting that many goblins. Seriously boring. Looks like a nice cohesive whole. Good job.

@Purplebeard: Ah return of the brightly colored dwarves. I like bright colours, so woot. I specifically like the one with the book, I think the shading on that is very nice.

@Paull: Wow, classic green knight colours. I like it, nice detail. I just think the basing is a little out of place.

@Rikk (Deamons): The flash on that makes it very hard to see the quality of the painting. It's a good start I think.

@Rikk (O&G): Once again shame of the flash, but less so this time. I like the idea of blue. Gives it a different look, nice.

@juicytomatoes: Tomb Kings yo! You once again impress with the consistent style in painting. It will make the entire army look awesome. The Not-really imperishable? Ha. Maybe the carrion are a little on the brown side.

@sssk: I still like the white-ness of these goblins. That's very nice. I think the bases could use some work though.

@smokemeakipper: I love the brightness of the colours. It makes them very 'readable' in games. Very nice work, especially the troll.

Overall very good work this month people!

13-01-2011, 13:42
My apologies folks (and especially those of you who rolled a 3). Work has consumed me like a really hungry hamster, so I’m afraid I probably won’t find time to comment on all the good work I see before me. I will do a tiny bit of responding to those who have commented on my stuff though as a “thank you”.

Doi: I do have some of the new fanatics, but I just don’t think they have the same dynamic as the old ones. Seeing as they aren’t actually “in” the unit, it doesn’t really matter that they’re quite a bit bigger than the skull pass ones either (also I imagine mushrooms will be supplied to the biggest and strongest goblins so that they can chuck those metal balls around with a bit more gusto).

Hatemonger: thanks, I thought the classic “slingshot” doom diver just didn’t seem right (especially as it shoots more like a rock lobba), so I picked an artillery piece I liked and set to.

Vaiuri: Once I’ve figured out how to make a base for the artillery piece itself, I plan on having a slight comedy twist involving a barrel of gun powder and the classic “unnoticed trail of gunpowder”, leading from the mortar to the barrel. Now that will be messy…

Maglok: as I’ve (probably) said before in this tale, I’m not really one for going with the “classic” colour scheme, so I thought “what’s very different to black?....” and BOOM, a colour scheme was born. As for the bases, you’re right, the fanatics are actually on old bases where I just painted a bit of sand green, I’m going to get round to re-doing that to fit in with the rest of the army once I get a bit of time.

If anyone has any suggestions for ways to make an artillery base (the base itself, not any modelling to do with it really) then please come forth and speak. Also looking at what I’ve managed so far this month, and how much (real) work I have to do, I fear that my rock lobba is going to have to become a 2 month project (it’s a sad state of affairs when 70 points requires 2 months), so instead, my next entry is likely to be a BSB.
Again, great work everyone, and I’m extremely sad that I can’t leave comments, as there’re a lot of excellent units this months

13-01-2011, 16:51
Warmachine base?

What I do is take a piece of plasticard and take 4 (for chukka's) or 6 (for lobbers/divers) 40x40mm bases (this is usually big enough for O&G warmachines). I then put those bases together in a square or rectangle (no glue yet) and put the warmachine and the crew on it, in the way I want them to stand. Then I mark where the bases of the crew need to fit, and take the models away again. After that I stick my knife in the bases and cut squares where the crew-bases will fit in neatly. Next I glue the 40x40 bases in the right order on the plasticard, cut away the excess plasticard, fill all holes neatly with green stuff, glue on anything that I want to include in this little scenic base. Then it's of to spraiying, painting, gluing the warmachine on it and add the crew.

Some WIP pics (not too clear though) on this page of my blog:

Some results on this blog page:

Tip: make the holes for the crew slightly bigger, as paint also has a thickness.
(For anyone who is interested in the hell cannon: It's on 4 50x50mm + 2 cav bases, totalling to 125x100mm, that makes a perfect fit)

ARMY: Warriors of Chaos

UNIT: Chaos Lord

BUILD/CONVERSION: Slight conversion of that brilliant model of the Chaos Lord

@Harry (Undead) - Lovely painting, excellent basing on those Wraiths. The purple/gold/black colourway works well.

@Ego Ninja (Goblins) - fifty - boy that is a lot of figures! Impressed that you've kept up a high standard across the board. You have what looks like a proper army already!

@Someone2040 (Beastmen) - Hope to see something next month!

@Rikk (Daemons) - Nice. Great choice of Bloodthirster figure. Look forward to seeing him finished! >:)

@Braad (O&G) - Great figure really like him.

@reddevil18 (CW) - Lots of minis - you remind me that I'm going to have to start painting more....

@huitzilopochtli - NO! I've had exams - you can manage both.

@smokemeakipper (O&G) - Brilliant colour scheme, nice painting :)

@Doi (OK) - VERY gory. Impressive.

@Rutgar - Hopefully see something next month!

@akai (Good & Evil mini-armies) - Disappointed not to see new stuff. I look forward to next month's entry.

@Baggers (Lizardmen) - Not many ppl running Lizardmen now, I like your army and the fact that you've already done a Stegadon and Slaan :O

@Waagghh_Logan (CW) - A man after my own heart - a minor conversion and bang, you have a Hero. Same trick that I've pulled twice. Can't do that every month though!

@SamVimes (HE) - Those chariots are HUGE. The Greek-style decoration is impressiveHope you've got something big planned to finish them off. I'd like to see them on custom bases.

@Ister Flersson (CW) - WOW! Finished already! That is inspirational stuff. I vote that you do another army - Dwarves are good. Or you could do Tzeentch (good complement for Khorne) >:)

@simonN (Lizardmen) - Really nice figures. Looking forward to more.

@vcassano (CW) - Looks tough and grim - perfect for Chaos.

16-01-2011, 20:16
Comments on the 6's, and I decided to comment on 2's as well. To everyone else: lots of great work, keep it up!

@Cthulu - I love your duelist, that's a great pose.

@Fechik – As I said before, looking great so far, paint job on screaming bell looks amazing. How are you getting on with the yellow on the plague priest/monks?

@Matrim_Cauthon - That shaggoth model is one of my absolute favourites, your paintjob really does it justice. I really like the effect you've done on the axe too. How did you achieve it?

@EmperorNorton – High Elves:That shield in the background looks stunning. Ogres: You've really brought out the character in the bruiser's face, the force is coming together very nicely too.

@reddevil18 – Looking good, although I think the bases could benefit from being 'broken up' a little, something to make the grass look a little more patchy and grimy?

@Doi - Great work on the gorgers, change of pose works really well. I'm intrigued as to what the *** stands for!

@KHolbourn - Looking good, I especially like the paint job on the wargor, the greeny tinge to the skin looks really cool, as does the "banner" on his back.

@Illuminus79 - Secret combination eh! Not for long... I've sent by best man on the job, you'd better double-lock your doors :shifty: Good job though, great model.

@Ister Flersson - Congratulations on finishing your army, glad to hear you enjoyed the tournament (read your plog). Finished product really does look great. Time to sign up with a new army!?

@Jericho - Your dwarves are looking amazing as always. I really like that mustardy tone of yellow on your helblaster/storm crew. Could you please share the recipe?

@vcassano - great conversion, he really does looks like a chaos hard-nut. Nice, moody paintjob too.

And replies:

@Vaiuri - Cheers. I'm going to go back to the eyes to make glow a bit more "glowy." Btw, what does ^^ mean? I've realised I been using it without knowing what it stands for :o (this is also the worst embarassed smiley I've seen!)

@Ister Flersson - Thank you

@Doi - Thank you. Yeah, I'm going for the same sort of look as his army, lots of muted colours all round (although the wardancers are doing their best to break the moody trend... I'm tempted to make them darker).

@Malorian - Thank you, I wasn't sure about him, thought he might be too bright, although I am considering making him darker at a later date, depending on whetehr his current scheme theme fits with the rest of the army.

16-01-2011, 21:42
The recipe for the yellow has evolved as I get more and more impatient with it :)

I now do Calthan Brown, Tausept Ochre, 50/50 Tausept Ochre and Iyanden Darksun, Iyanden Darksun, and then an edge hilight of P3's Moldy Ochre as a final touch.

There used to be washes and other colors involved, but coverage issues mean this is the way to go from now on! Looks very similar to the original more complex scheme anyway, so it won't cause matching issues.

Glad you like the mustard yellows I'm using on both armies, it was a bit of an adventure making it work!

17-01-2011, 07:51
@Vaiuri - Cheers. I'm going to go back to the eyes to make glow a bit more "glowy." Btw, what does ^^ mean? I've realised I been using it without knowing what it stands for :o (this is also the worst embarassed smiley I've seen!)

A friend of mine introduced me to it as a smiley, kinda like the traditional :) but more 'hello kitty' type smiley eyes. You can add a mouth if you fancy it ^_^ or ^o^ <- that one looks a bit weird though!

Its a way for me to get around the smiley limit ;)

I also play a LOT of online games and use it there (probably more than I should!), it kinda becomes automatic!

17-01-2011, 08:28
I am happy to announce that I did quite a bit of prepwork the other day, and so for next month I can start painting a lot of different projects... But first I will finish my Treeman. Almost there!

Edit: And you can make it wink!! ^_~

And turn it into a hardrockin cute winking thing

\../, ^_~ ,\../ ROCK ON!!!

Comments for 2s

* Beastmen, boys - You have done marvels with the minotaurs. I've hated those minies since I saw them but your painting really completes them. I would however courage you to add a little more detail to metal and the bases. Badad black wash, some dried up blood and little highlighting with mithril silver should do wonders. As for the bases maybe some abandoned items? Bones? Ripped off heads? Something to heighten their brutal nature.
* High elves - Solid work. I like the shield and would recommend you to consider to look closely Harry's high elf bases.
Matrim_Cauthon - My favorite model and you have done such a good work with it! Excellent! You could maybe paint some additional highlights for the sand?
Doi - Great looking gorgers. Their annoying to paint but you've managed to pull it through. The blood looks excellent and I like the idea of them being brothers. As 8th edition encourages you to create houserules how about something similar as with von Carstein couple? If the other dies the other gets a little bonus?
KHolbourn - Solid work. I like your painting and conversions but would ease up with the flock at the bases. Little is better I think. Using the fell beast as jabberslythe is a great idea as it's such a good looking model. Some greenstuffing would have made it look even better.
* Empire - What... Wait... Why... Why isn't this finished?! It looks magnificent (the crew and base) and abysmal at the same time (unpainted parts...) :D Get it done! And also consider the idea about notepad stolen. Such a simple and great idea.
* Dwarves - I hate the bases. Cork doesn't look good in my eyes. No matter how you do it. I would recommend you to try bark. Oh, and the dwarves. Best. Minies. Ever.

@Malorian - Thanks, though I think I'll be redoing the banner anyway. ^_^
@Doi - Colors are the way to go! After painting skaven and beastmen and undead for years there's going to be A LOT of colors!
@Vaiuri - Good to be of service. I actually did it as a tutorial for our own gaming forum.
@reddevil18 - Wait until you'll see my swordmen. And greatswords! There's going to be colors colors and COLORS!
@Elfboy - Yeah. I'm quite pleased with it too!

ALSO - I looks like it's going to be a joker month for me... Two weeks to go and I've nothing...

Time for the comments for all those who rolled a 5.

@ScytheSwathe. Welcome to the tale. Those High Elves look really good. I am impressed with the White. When I have painted High Elves in the past the white tends to look grey, not white.

@Juicytomatoes. I love the Carrion. The brown feathers really work. I also quite like the work on the Tomb King and his shield.

@gaarew. I like the warpaint on the Ogres. Every time I look at them I keep quoting Braveheart:)

@Shep. Love the banner on the Lion Chariot. Simple, but effective.

@samvimes. Nice conversion idea for the chariot. The freehand is very well done.

And for some others that have caught my eye.

@ Harry. As ever your models are an inspiration. I love what you are doing with all the different armies.

@Matrim_Cauthon. Love the Shaggoth. A great scheme that is effective.

@ Ego Ninja. I like the Warpfire Thrower. Can you reveal how you painted it?

@Ister Flersson. Great Khorne army. I really like it.

In response to the comments

@ Vaiuri. Thank you, I am looking forward to seeing the army finished. Somehow I think there will be a few more units added after the tale has ended. I’m glad you like the colour scheme. I always found the blue a bit to unrealistic and so after painting countless Lord of the Rings model in realistic schemes. I’ve followed it on with my Lizardmen. Plus I got to look at Dinosaurs for inspiration. :)

@Purplebeard. Well I am going for a top down approach with my army. I wrote a list out and started working my way down from the top. Currently in the core section. We’ll see how good they are on the table top when I finish the army.

17-01-2011, 14:05
All right, comments time (all 2s):

Halberdiers are great just as last month's. The BSB looks amazing, great to see the freehand come to life. All the rest of the models are definitely up to par, but I find the warmachine itself to be quite the hasty paintjob, no?
Nice little handgunners stuck in the attachment too. Impressive amount of models (I painted empire last year, so I know your pain ;)).

BoC: You pulled a hell of a paintjob on those Minotaurs. Brilliant!
HE: Nice and vibrant colour scheme. The way High Elves should Be!

Splendid looking Gorgers. The blood actually looks like blood, and that's a huge compliment (mine never does). The white tones on the skin are also executed to perfection. Solid paintjob.

Wargor looks good, nice and dark. The last two pics are a bit small, can't really see the details, but what is there to see is very satisfying. Great find for a Jabberslythe.

EMP: The parts that are finished look great.
DW: Amazing paintjob. The fact you put 'em on heights is so they can look their fellows of the empire in the eyes? :) Very neat and subtle shades and highlights.

Comments on comments:

Excellent work. A very impressive paint job

Awesome shaggoth! So vibrant, it practically jumps out of the screen!

I loved painting this model too, nice job you’ve done! The red scales work really well and will fit right in with a Khornate scheme.

I really hope my shaggoth looks even half as good as that when i paint i

Good looking models all around. Infact this is the first time I noticed it has those guys in its hair. Other people have always just made it too dark to notice I guess...
Thanks! Yeah I didn't know they were there either until I started highlighting the hair! Kind of a sprite wood elf thingy. Since they were there I thought I 'd paint them a more striking colour.

That shaggoth model is one of my absolute favourites, your paintjob really does it justice. I really like the effect you've done on the axe too. How did you achieve it?
Thanks! It's not that hard really. Prime Chaos Black, Paint thin layer of Boltgun Metal, Wash with Badab Black (more towards the center), highlight in stripes with Chainmail followed by a very thin highlight of Mithril Silver.

My favorite model and you have done such a good work with it! Excellent! You could maybe paint some additional highlights for the sand?
Thanks! I'm in doubt for the extra highlight. My Empire army had the same basing technique except that it was followed by an extra very light drybrush of Bleached Bone. Will see what I do with that, but I think the extra highlight might make it too light for WoC? No problem for now though, I can always do that later on.

Thanks as always for the kind words of encouragement, you noble scholars.

Lots more work has been done on that Helstorm, crew are 100% and just the rockets need painting (aka metallic drybrush and wash basically). Biggest obstacle remains the camera still. Put some work into a couple handgunners last night. Will update as soon as I can.

18-01-2011, 20:53
Yesterday I finished my entry for next month already. Sweet. Of course, that doesn't stop me, and I'm now also close to finisihing the scenic base for Azhag's wyvern. After that: the wyvern itself!

So little left to paint :)

19-01-2011, 05:55
Hello I would like to join, I'll be painting orcs and goblins I'll be entering in the men's section and my names Alex.

19-01-2011, 06:30
Time to post comments on my fellow 4's and any others who catch my beady eye.

@Harry's High Elves: Adore the dragon, it looks really pure.

@ Harry's Undead: It's good to see some of these older models again. Krell looks really imposing.

@Harry's Empire: Your Empire are very eye-catching. Stunning painting.

@ Harry's Goblins: Seeing these models again makes me wish the current GW gobbos were more like this. Painting those was a lesson in endurance no doubt.

@ Elfboy: Awesomely grim Wood Elves. To my mind, this is how a Wood Elf army should look. Excellent painting!

@SamVimes: Lovely freehand on your chariot.

@Ister Flersson: Congratulations! That's certainly a fine looking army you have there.

@ Jericho's Empire: The crewmen are very well painted. The yellow is excellent!

So many Jokers and people dropping out this month. A shame.

Good luck for next month peeps!

Working on 25 skeleton spearmen + command. So far the bone is done, spears in progress. 5 skeletons fully finished (test cases) and a nearly finished standard bearer.

I am starting to tire of BONE!

Replies to comemnts about my stuff:

@Doi: Sinister is good! >:)

@Malorian: Yeah, he probably does. He is a bit small compared to many modern figures. I think in the long run I will get the AoW Dwarf and put him on a shield for the real 'King'/Army General and keep this guy as a secondary lord. I really like the sculpt though - but that it always the problem with Dwarves - lots & lots of really good sculpts to choose from for the characters!

@DeadInTheHead: I wasn't down about it; rather I was wondering whether I should try and do the cheesiest, most model-lite Dwarven army possible for 2000 pts to try and take the Michael :D Ultimately decided not to as I would have to spend more money to buy stuff!

@Maglok: Yep, I decided on red, blue, yellow, green and white for the colour scheme. I didn't want them dull and boring, hence bright colours and the odd purple/blue/green beard thrown in.

@reddevil18: Thanks, I like painting lots of different beard colours. breaks up painting the infantry units a bit. Same reason for making eclectic units with lots of different sculpts.

@Vaiuri: Exams all done now - bit of a mixed bag. The rest of my exams this year should be easier though :D. Next month, I'm submitting a Runesmith, Shieldmaiden Musician, & 13 Warriors (to buff up an exisitng unit I have).

The months to come should involve more Shieldmaidens (want at least 40), Miners, lots of shield Warriors (since I already have these and long-term, they'll come back into use) DHW Warriors, a Stone Thrower (yet to buy), and a BSB conversion (for which I have no ideas yet, except that it the figure has to have the biggest and best banner in the army).

19-01-2011, 11:57
@Jericho - Cheers for the recipe, I'll be trying out a "patchwork" talabheim unit in the future with different tones of reds and yellows. What colour/mix of colours from the gw range would you say mouldy ocre was closest to?

@Vaiuri and Daniel36 - Ok, I can see why I couldn't guess what it meant :), there's a lot of potential with this though...

,,\ / *_* \ /,,
captian redeye

@Matrim_Cauthon - Cheers, simple or not, its a really nice, subtle effect you have there.

@Fanny crowbar - Thanks, glad you like the grim look.

Okay, Okay, I know I'm posting late, but better late than never, right?

Army - Ogre Kingdoms - The Blood Drinkers Tribe

Unit - 2 x Maneaters

Points - 2 x Maneaters, 2 x Heavy Armour, 1 x Cathayan Longsword and
1 x Brace of Handguns = 180 points

Total Points = 759 points

Highs/Lows - These were fun to build, convert, sculpt and paint.

Background (with apologies to Rudyard Kipling!)

"...and now, Bruvva Kipling, allow me to present Bruvva Peachee, which is 'Eee, and Bruvva Dhannee, which is me. The less said about our occupations the better, 'cos we've been most things in our time!"

Dhannee and Peachee were lifelong friends, who grew up, and eventually left their tribe to seek their fortunes together. They sold their fighting abilities to the highest bidder, and fought for all armies, in all known parts of the Old World. After many years and many campaigns (where they got to sample the flesh of all species!), they grew tired of seeing their paymasters collecting their spoils of war, and so Dhannee and Peachee hatched a plan. Their scheme was, to travel to the most remote part of the old world, and train any tribe's warriors to fight and conquer their enemies, and when there were no more tribes to conquer, they would make themselves Kings, and loot the entire country, before returning home as heroes, eventually to become Tyrants in their own right. The plan worked better than they could have dreamed - after conquering several tribes, and amassing the largest, most well trained army the region had ever seen, the remaining tribes of Savage Orcs banded together to offer battle in a climactic showdown with Dhannee and Peachee's forces. Just as it looked like they were in mortal danger, Dhannee led a suicidal charge against a battery of boltthrowers, and was struck in the chest by a bolt. The bolt had hit a concealed knife pouch in Dhannee's tunic. Oblivious to anything else but slaughtering the entire Battery's crews, Dhannee laid about himself with his rusty old blade. As his bloodlust subsided, he looked back to the suddenly silent battlefield. All the combatants, aside from Peachee and Bhillee Fish (gnoblar who could speak Orcish), were prostrate on the floor. "What the f..........." muttered Dhannee as Bhillee Fish explained that the Orcs saw Dhannee hit by a bolt, and not die, much less bleed, therefore they believed Dhannee to be a god!

19-01-2011, 16:12
Fabius Bile, those maneaters are awesome! :D

19-01-2011, 21:26
So many Jokers and people dropping out this month. A shame.

Not a shame. This happens all the time. We finish with only about 20 to 25 painters (in mens section).

Do you like blobfish?

19-01-2011, 21:42
You can sure as hell bet I'm not dropping out!

I might actually get to paint something other than a guardsmen today for the first time in a month! :p

I have a chariot and a black orc rider just waiting to get me over the 2k mark for my orc and goblin challenge :D

19-01-2011, 23:53
This sucks. Wargames Factory is in a crazy situation, and their amazons were going to be the base of my Maidenguard highelf army. Looking through my collection, the only other elves I have are LoTR. I think I can pull a month for scratch-building the bolt throwers, and then 2 jokers. That gives me 3 months to figure out a suitable alternative that doesn't cost very much money. I think that basically means sculpting and casting. So, maybe it'll happen, but maybe not. We will have to see

20-01-2011, 09:19
Do you like blobfish?

Only if cooked properly :D

Edit: Hopefully I'll be in that last 20-25 *crosses fingers*

20-01-2011, 16:05
Well, those in your avatar don't look properly prepared...

20-01-2011, 16:13
I'm not dropping out, just had a busy busy couple of months. Hopefully I'll have some stuff to post next week.

But to everyone who's posted this month, it's all looking great guys!

21-01-2011, 07:42
Whoever wrote the song that goes "It's the most wonderful time of the year" really deserves to be punished.

Since a couple of days, I have gotten myself out of my paranoia-induced, inspirationless rut, and got back at painting. I have finished my Treeman, which will be my 2-month submission at the beginning of next month, and I will probably also finish my unit of Greatswords this Saturday, as we're planning a painting afternoon.

Most wonderful time... My hiney!

I've finally got something done 4 months in, hope it's ok if I keep going..though I might need to drop down to Boys.

ARMY: Empire

UNIT: Warrior Priest

POINTS: Haven't decided on exact magic items etc…let's say 125 points

POINTS SO FAR: month 1: joker, month 2: joker, month 3: 0 pts, month 4: 125pts, TOTAL 125 pts

HIGHS / LOWS: actually getting something done was certainly nice!

Morning all,

While managing to find some time to work on my rock lobba last night, I was wondering (having never done a tale of painters before) if there's any scope for a half-way summary around next month, or the month after.

By this I mean - so far we've posted/seen pictures of a model here, and a unit there, and we can all see how lovely everyone's models are. In theory though, by now everyone should have either a 500 or 1000 point army (give or take the occasional joker, and lack of enough core to make it "legal" yet etc), all painted to the great standards that we've been seeing and commenting on. I'd like to see everything together, so that we can see how (for instance) that amazingly painted character fits into the rest of the army etc.

Just an idea to keep the spirits high (a kind of "look what we've done so far, the end is in sight" type of thing), and apologies if tales of painters normally do this, and I'm just being entirely unoriginal.

22-01-2011, 08:34
Well, in the past everyone always posted 3 pics of his newly painted stuff, and 1 pic off all his painted stuff together... But that kinda slipped out.

Maybe we could reintroduce this?

22-01-2011, 09:17
Yes. When the limit was 4 pictures, Braad is exactly right we posted 3 pictures of the new stuff and an army shot of everything we have painted so far. Now with a 6 picture limit you could post up to 5 pictures of the new stuff and still post the army shot.

I shall make sure I update the first post next month. It is nice to watch the armies coming together and growing month by month.

23-01-2011, 06:16
So, it occurs to me that if I actually paint everything I plan to paint for my Empire, it would come out to about 1800 points. The units with no upgrades at all on the characters (and with no General of the Empire or Engineer that I also wanted to paint) come out to 1600. Considering I'm in the "boys" league for my two armies (the Dwarfs are also pushing 1500+ in a hurry with my goal list) I should probably be a little more realistic. I might not actually paint a Steam Tank for the Empire just yet :D

Currently I'm working on a champion with Hochland Long Rifle. Lovely model that just needed to be painted :) So that means I'm doing a parent unit of Handgunners and not just a detachment. After that I'm really torn as to whether I should do a batch of Greatswords or more Handgunners for the big "Get off my butt and paint Empire" month.

Anyway... comments!! I'm just gonna go ahead and comment on every single thing this month.

Harry: Very nice dragon. The super simple scheme works well. I think the blue pinstriping has a lot to do with it.

Harry: The VC continue to impress. Still enjoy seeing classic models getting done up. Can’t wait to see real units get done.

Harry: ESTALIANS! Love it. I’m actually kinda jealous as I don’t have any of these Estalian handgunners. Always wanted some.

Harry: Seriously man, start more army projects. Quit being so lazy. Nice choice of yet more gobbo cav, the models are great :D

Doc_thulhu: I like the step by step on the banner, it turned out great. So much character in your army.

Rik a Kadrin Kazad: Your name is a mouthful btw. Bright colors for Chaos, looking forward to seeing the up to date photos.

Ego Ninja: Again, simple but beautifully done rate. Excellent color choices.

Ego Ninja: Great looking unit, and the army as a whole is impressive so far.

Purplebeard: Definitely living up to the name ;) The unique colors are definitely cool. Nice banner too.

ScytheSwathe: Keep the faith man, getting those bases done will really be a big step.

Paull: Green Knight looks good in very classic colors. Just make sure I never have to fight him. I hate that unkillable bastard :p

Tonberry: KA-KAW! I love making that noise whenever there’s a vaguely birdlike model involved. Looks good.

Fechik: Nice start to the Bell. That’s a big project.

Hilte2: Man the classic models are all over this year’s Tale! I dig it.

Someone2040: More Minos, jeeze. Lol.

Someone2040: Sorry to hear your Sea Guard had busted off spears etc. They are surprisingly tough to clip off the sprue with such fine details and being so close to the edge of the frame.

Matrim_Cauthon: Shaggy looks really nice, the photo is a bit yellowish but I’m sure it’s more natural in person.

Rikk: Another ancient figure! Nice! The Gobbo unit looks suitably crazy with the mix of squigs etc. in there.

DeadInTheHead: I’m sure the model will come together nicely once you redo the swirly base. That does look a bit tricky to pull off.

DeadInTheHead: Looking forward to seeing those guys with the river of blood effect applied.

JuicyTomatoes: Not sure if I like the pink on the carrion as much as I like it on the rest of the figs… nice characters tho. Lots of points for you this month.

EmperorNorton: Speaking of pink…

EmperorNorton: Love that Bruiser fig.

Gaarew: That army is coming along nicely. I do like the body paint and the basing a lot.

Braad: Can’t quite make out the banner, but I’m sure we’ll see him again later on.

Lord Shadowheart: I like the conversion, suits the model to have a bow instead of shield.

Lord Shadowheart: Good progress on the beasts… let’s see them done.

Reddevil18: Can’t blame you for painting a character with hounds to boost points. Hounds are so damn cheap.

Elfboy: Good start on the Dryads. Really like the colors on that Wardancer!

Sssk: Lol wtf! I dig the conversion for sure.

Maglok: The green stinger is a nice touch.

Smokemeakipper: The colors for that army are all over the place, should be interesting to see how they all work when the army’s done and on the battlefield.

Fanny Crowbar: Again I really like the color scheme a ton. Simple but very effective. The blue/white alternating areas look sharp.

Rorulmesp: Very sharp looking unit of gobbos.

Doi: The gore effect on the Gorgers is sick! In the best possible way.

Hatemonger: Looking forward to seeing a unit assembled together on a movement (not painting) tray.

Baggers: Looking good but try to avoid having so much light coming from behind the models. Makes it hard to see.

KHolbourn: Fellbeast as a Transformation stand in? Makes sense to me.

Illuminus79: Another classic figure! I think I have one of those lying around somewhere…

Waagghh_Logan: Simple conversion but hopefully enough to make him stand out from a unit.

Jardain: Things are coming together nicely for that army.

Inquisitor Pariah: If I ran out of Tausept Ochre when working on my Averlanders I would cry, cry and cry some more.

Hammer49: Taking photos of almost all metal models is no fun.

Shep: Those archers turned out pretty great. Especially considering how much I dislike the sculpt!

SamVimes: Man that thing is massive. Awesome detail work.

Ister Flersson: Great army especially for how fast this got done!

SimonN: Small submission but gotta love how fast some models rack up points.

Vcassano: I really do like the conversion.

Fabius Bile: Very very cool conversions.

Artificial orange: Just try to get something done on a regular basis, doesn’t matter what. Just keep painting!

Rik a Kadrin Kazad: Your name is a mouthful btw. Bright colors for Chaos, looking forward to seeing the up to date photos.

I know, and get reminded every time I log on :) But as the Dwarf Lord of the Mountain Pass Fortress, I'm entitled to wear that name.. ;)
I'm considering repainting the fortress parts in stone colours, as I painted it in an "iron rich" stone colour back in the days..

I'll give you an updated picture of my warriors in the next month's thread, as I have to get new batteries for my camera first.. I'll also be posting my Sorceror for that one, as I finished it today :) (@Doi, I made a staff of that weapon, using a piece of a tree in the fortified manor's fence..)

24-01-2011, 14:34
Neat fortress! Really like the "starts at the waterfall, ends at the cave" approach you've used for the moat.

I think that having the fortress made out of iron ore is also a nice thematic touch, probably best to add some more highlighting and details to it rather than starting again from scratch.

Agreed that the fortress part needs some work, it looks flat compared to the rest of the nicely highlighted rocks and moat. 2 of the walls do seem to be darker and greener than the others though, so that might be worth fixing. The cicular metal plates at the front could look great with some washes and a bit of highlighting on top too.

24-01-2011, 22:58
unfortunately i think i'm going to have to drop out - I haven't painted any dark elves in nearly 2 months now, and worse I'm not inspired to either especially since our group at the moment is all about epic.

Good luck and congratulations to all those who do stick it out :)

25-01-2011, 09:16
This was going to be my drop out post due to not a lot of time, but scratch that - I'm manning up! I'm running behind on photos but will get Januarys stuff up before the end of the month I promise and then get back on target for february!

25-01-2011, 13:00
That's the spirit :D

25-01-2011, 18:18
Here is what I have been working on this month:

After much effort and careful kitbashing I was able to build the 40 man Swordsman unit you see in the back, with no duplicates!
In the forefront I finally wrangled together 3 complete Cannon/Mortar Crews for the warmachines I have. I received them with only 4 total crewmen.

Once I got all those built I finally got to painting. In order to still hit my goal this month I decided to paint this Wizard Lord on horse. Still a good bit to do.

I will try to get to comments tonight or tomorrow, sorry for the delay on them.

25-01-2011, 18:53
I like your ramshackle swordsmen. Is the aim for them to look like a random bunch of mercenaries? If so you seem to be doing a fine job. Haven't seen that wizard model for many a long moon, just goes to show some of the old models can go toe to toe with their more modern counterparts.

In "sssk news", from this point on I vow to never again paint a warmachine (a vow which will inevitably be broken eventually). I'm even having trouble painting the crew, there's just nothing inspiring about it. I've also just found another bunch of 25 night goblins which are almost painted....but I don't remember starting them.

With just a week (ish) left for this month, I hope everyone is getting on well. the month seems to have flown past, and in that respect I'm rather glad I only aimed to pain 4 models (rock lobba and 3 crew)

25-01-2011, 19:21
Exciting. The end of the month is coming close, and I think I can finish with a little extra thingy in time!

25-01-2011, 22:54
The end of the month is coming close

Panic!

25-01-2011, 23:07
Panic!

It's no looking good for me this month, I might have some war machine crew painted up, but it'll run close.

26-01-2011, 04:49
I'm on track this month if only for the fact that its undercoated before the 1st of the next month .

I might even be able to get my second army up and running (and up to date) this month...

26-01-2011, 05:23
Lol for once I have a decent chunk of my points painted when there's still a week left in the month... not as much as I'd like of course (Seahawks made the playoffs and had the audacity to beat the Saints, which meant I had to cheer them on for 2 weekends where I should have been painting!) but still I really really do like the Hochland toting model. I have never seen this model painted before so it should be fairly special on the field.

26-01-2011, 07:21
I was getting nowhere with either my Silver Helms or my Sea Guard beyond the base coats, so I decided to paint up my Dragon Riding Lord (just the lord) last weekend for a cheeky post-Christmas points boost.

I've also run out of Daemons to paint for now, so after I've posted my fleshhounds I'll be in joker limbo until I get some bonecrushers in under the radar :shifty:

26-01-2011, 08:34
I am running behind on my spearmen.

I might have to change to painting a hero model. January just seems to go by so fast.

26-01-2011, 18:04
Sorry everyone, too much real life this month:

Well done everyone who got stuff done this month. Things that caught my eye:

@Harry - brilliant dragon, and nice to see you increasing your horde of wolf riders - I can remember seeing the originals in progress the the beginning of your plog when I first found warseer.

@doc_cthulu - I love the variety of your colour schemes; great to see it continuing.

@Paull - I think the Green Knight mini is one of my favourites, and you've definitely done it justice.

@Matrim_Caulthon - That Shaggoth is beautiful, and very well photographed as well. Lovely natural looking colours.

@Braad - Very striking banner. It will show up wonderfully on the tabletop.

@KHoulborn - I like the purple tongue on your jaberwocky.

@Ister Flersson - Well done on finishing so quickly!

Good luck to everyone for next month.

27-01-2011, 12:04
As for as WIP goes I've been starting on my Warhammer Doubles armies for this year (I do the painting, my partner has to figure out how to play with the units I've selected to paint! ;)). In addition to the 1000 points of High Elves (which will expand beyond 1000 due to my inability to settle on what to take in the Doubles army), I am pleased to announce that I will also be painting 1000 points of EMPIRE.

Ignoring my own advice at the start of this tale I've been painting the odd figure from different units this month. Although its saved a little of my sanity by not having to paint lots of state troops over and over, I'm now annoyed to see mostly gray regiments with the odd brightly painted chap standing out like a sore thumb :( The only way to get around this will be to finish the units, the question is, to I focus on one at a time and quash my OCD or continue painting 2-3 men from different units to save my sanity?

27-01-2011, 13:21
I don't know how you like to paint, but doing a small batch of rank and files along with a couple of randoms every month has been a common compromise for me :D

27-01-2011, 15:36
I am pleased to announce that I will also be painting 1000 points of EMPIRE.

I also see here that you started with Lizardmen. What happened to those?

Ego Ninja
27-01-2011, 19:51
Just a quick message to Braad/Harry - Im moving my Skaven from the Boys to Mens as of next month...so expect a big entry next week ;)

Cheers for all the comments guys, ill try to leave some of my own shortly!

27-01-2011, 20:48
Very good. And what about adding another army to boyz to replace the skaven? Something like Daemons or Bretonnia?

27-01-2011, 21:37
I also see here that you started with Lizardmen. What happened to those?

Hi Braad, I wussed out of those a couple of months ago, I probably didnt make it very clear in my post. If I could replace the Lizards with Empire I would be most grateful

This is a result of my every changing moods in Warhammer unfortunately >.< Its a miracle I'm still painting High Elves!

27-01-2011, 22:13
I'm afraid I'm going to have to use a joker this month, I finished the vermin lord, but I've misplaced my camera

28-01-2011, 16:26
If I could replace the Lizards with Empire I would be most grateful

Sure! No problem.

28-01-2011, 17:29
Three days left everyone! Hoping to see some nice stuff this month. For me it'll be the return of the boys, plus something special ;)

28-01-2011, 18:00
Finally, I have time to type up some comments this month.

Fechik: Great looking stone and wood. As far as the yellow is concerned, try washing it lightly with Gryphonne Sephia or even Ogryn Flesh to add some depth and dirtiness.

Hilte2: Nice crisp lines and coloring. You army is going to look amazing when all finished.

Emperor Norton (High Elves): We meet again! Your colors are a nice change from the normal blue/white we see so often. Did you leave these eyeball-less on purpose?

Emperor Norton (Ogres): Great skin tones again. What exactly is the Gretchin doing behind the Tyrant? :eyebrows:

reddevil18: The Hero is a little flat. He would really look good with a bit of shadowing/highlighting. The Hounds look great though.

Elfboy: Your Dryads look very realistic. I think all the work was well worth it.

Ister Flersson: Well holy crap! Nicely done there. I can't really comment on the paint job though because your picture is so zoomed out.

vcassano: Very nice conversion work. He looks like a true follower of Chaos...before any taint/mutation.

Now, for something completely different... Replies:
Ister Flersson: The metal is supposed to be a meteoric ore...so stone-like is what I was going for.

Vaiuri: I like this idea of yours. Now I just need to figure out how to pull it off.

Elfboy: I thought I heard someone on my roof the other night. :shifty: Nice try though.

Jericho: I love some of these older models. There will be quite a few in this army.

sssk: Not so much ramshackle as self equipped. According to the fluff: Middenland warriors are experienced at defending their own lands, so I thought I would represent this by showing that they each bear their own distinctive gear.

29-01-2011, 01:51
Lizardmen : 1000 POINTS (Boys)

UNIT: 3 Kroxigor.

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversion at all.

PAINTING: I kept these guys blue to make them stand out against the skinks if I run them as a combined unit. Mordian blue base coat with a regal blue drybrush then asurmen blue wash, Ice blu for the “soft” parts.

BASING: Sand. Black basecoat, then a very heavy vermin brown drybrush.

STILL TO DO: Just need to finish the basing. And I’ll probably give them a bit of a tidy up later too, as it’s not my best work.

HIGHS AND LOWS: No real lows, although it’s been hard the last couple of months slogging through with zero motivation. But I think I’m over the hump now so it should be good next month.

29-01-2011, 02:00
Dawi : 2000 POINTS (MEN)

UNIT: Organ gun crew

BUILD/CONVERSION: No conversions here, I think the metal dwarf war machine crews are some of the nicest minis out.

PAINTING: Basically the same as rest of my Dwarfs, boltgun with a wash then chainmail drybrushed over, Tallern skin with an ogryn wash then a Dwarf flesh highlight. Gold is just shining gold over a vermin brown base washed with gryphonne sepia. I'll have to do something with the helmet guy, his helmet and axe just meld into each other, maybe I'll paint the handle of his axe a different colour, also I've just noticed the face of the right hand fella isn't finished so I've got that to do to.

BASING: Sand, black basecoat, then Fenris grey, shadow grey, fortress grey drybrushes and topped of with some snow material mixed with pva glue.

STILL TO DO: Nothing.

HIGHS AND LOWS: I know I say this every month, but I love the old Dwarfs….so much character.

30-01-2011, 18:38
Better late than never, been on holiday for three weeks and so didn't get much painting done, so a joker for me but since i've been back I've been working on some dragon princes. Some awesome paintjobs here, keep it up guys!

30-01-2011, 19:58
Time to chime in again with some comments for number 5's and others;

juicytomatoes. I really like the crisp painting on those carrion, i think its the first time ive seen them looking that good

gaarew. Now theres a gang i wouldnt like to meet in a Glasweigan alleyway... They are looking a little shiny to me though, probably the result of the wash used on the trousers, they could maybe do with a quick spray of matt varnish

Fanny Crowbar. beutiful model!

Shep. Always nice to see more high elves about, and I really like the wood effect on those bows

SamVimes. Horses are a pain, especially since youve gone for dappled greys, and thats sme very nicce freehand there, would have taken me ages to get that right.

And thats all i can see! not many 5's it seems
Might need to get a move on in the next comple of days in time for next month!

I have to go with a Joker this month actually. I blame life and inspiration as it derailed me from painting units :P

Im working on a Demon Prince and when he is done i can go back on track. Will have to paint up something expensive then i think.

Good job everyone else that have managed to keep on producing in here!

Hi folks.

I'm having real trouble getting into it this year. I've played jokers every month so far. It's possible I can still do it (unlikely, but possible), so I'll hang in there for the moment and see if things get a bit easier as the year progresses. So...

Dark Elves: JOKER please. I'm painting some expensive units, so if I can post them all next month I'll get back on track.

Orcs: JOKER please. I'm working on big ol' units. Hopefully submitting one or two over the next couple of months will help me catch up a bit.

Empire: I'm pulling out. It was just too ambitious to think I could work on three armies this year.

Great to see everyone's work. Keep it up!

@ Hatemonger: Good work. It surprises me to say this, but that over saturation of red in your scheme just works. I;m not sure why, but it does.
The shoddy pictures make it look slightly more extreme than it actually is, but yes, the "blatent red" look was intentional. They're minions of the Blood God, not the scab god, so red means bright, arterial RED. I have some better/more accurate pics below.

@Hatemonger - I was quite lazy with the horns on my bloodletters, looking at yours is making me thing I should do something about it. I also quite like those bases all in red like that, but apparently I have dubious taste on these matters. Did you choose the flowery kitchen towels ? :p
It's funny you say that about the horns, because painting them was the longest part of the mini, and I was wondering if it was taking up more time than it was worth. Regarding the bases, I'm sorry to say that they were never intended to be red (twas an artifact of the red Army Painter spray), and are now the same brown-and-gray, generic, gravelly wasteland as all my minis.

As for the paper towels, the flowers were not my first choice, but sadly they were all sold out of the ones with skulls and swords. ;)

Hatemonger – Daemons
Those photos are a bit small, also, they appear to be on round bases? Do you have a plan to rebase these or make a jazzy movement tray?
I've been shrinking the photos so as not to be too large in the attachments. I could try a few larger ones.

My bases are indeed round, and that is intentional. I have a large 40k daemon army which has been reluctantly dragged into Fantasy, and I would like them all to match, so my bases are staying round where possible. Once my army is more settled and I know what size is good for each unit, I may make up some nice movement trays to tie them together a bit more.

My buddies who drift/race want to teach me how to drive sideways this spring, but I have no desire to do so in the winter and off the track.
As a side note, my first car (or tank, depending on your perspective) was a 1985 Buick. I always loved the winter driving, because with proper application of skids, you could actually increase the turning radius of the vehicle. :D

Hatemonger: Looking forward to seeing a unit assembled together on a movement (not painting) tray.
Ouch! I'm not sure if that was intended as a dig at me, but I guess the truth hurts. :p

Ok, so here they are together and finished, these 10 by themselves, then standing (as intended) as ranks 3 and 4 of their full unit. BTW, maybe I'm still just being a sissy noob about this whole movement tray thing, but I'm getting just a little tired of playing the rank-me-up minigame every time I pull these units out.

@Malorian, @Doi, @Vaiuri, @Jericho

- I rewashed the swirls, it was definitely required. I decided to go for purple rather than green, which didn't work at all for the "eldritch" thing I was after; new photo attached :)

@Doi - to be honest I'm not 100% sold on them myself. I'll see how thing look when I get to finishing of the bases.

@Hatemonger - you're absolutely right about the cloak. The main reason for doing the tale is the motivation to complete the army, but then it's also to push myself and improve in terms of technique. I did a bit more work on the cloak (see above), but you'll hopefully see a bit of an improvement on next months work. Yes, the banner was freehand, my first attempt at a freehand banner in around 20 years.

@Vaiuri - Thanks for the complements on the daemons, I'm not sure about the horns yet, they'll either be a glossy black (obsidian-esque), or I'll go for a more tradtionally "horny" effect.

@Jericho - My next daemonic tale entry contains the last models I have to paint (for now), so I will spend the month really working on those bases. I (very) quickly knocked up a test piece to see if the idea worked, I think it looks alright, and it should look even better with more rivulets and a bloodier-looking base (and tidier brushwork).

@Mouldsta - shame to see you dropping out, loved the colour scheme you had on your DE.

Haha it was not intended to be mean or anything! I'm glad you posted the ranked up unit shots, they look great man. Taking this type of photo really makes the unit seem "real" if you know what I mean.

Tomorrow new month, and I only need to put some grass on a base to finish my stuff for this month. Sweet.

31-01-2011, 17:48
After a bit of a vaulsc marathon on youtube yesterday, I'm all up to date for this month plus a few added extras. Haven't taken photos yet though, so I'm not totally sure when I'll be able to get pictures up (it tends to be dark when I get home).

February should be a bumper month too, as I'm trying to clear my painting space for the inevitable new savage orc recruits (provided the models are good).

The changes to the cloak and swirly bits look 100% better, and improve the whole model IMO, so well done on that.

That freehand is nice; I would have assumed it was molded on. The only reason I know better is because I skipped using that same one to avoid painting something onto it. :P

I agree, and I didn't think you were really trying to be harsh, but you reminded me I hadn't posted finished pics for this month. And I'm beginning to generate a guilt complex about my round bases and cheapo movement trays. Actually, I'm becoming a bit self-conscious of the plain basing in general in the company of so many nice ones here.

My steam tank is as done as it is going to get, as soon as I can get the darn pics posted I should be all caught up and back on track.

Apologies for delay in getting some comments out (Comments for 3's).

Paull - Great looking model, really like free hand stuff.

Purplebeard - I like the purplebeards! Banners look good too.

Ego Ninja - Wow, that's a big unit, would take me 2-3 months to paint that size up and looks so good too. I really like how the bases and red colouring really bring it all together as one unit. Skaven also very cool.

Sssk - Absolutely love the Doom Diver conversion. Very Goblin-y

Maglok - Nice Scorpion, I don't see many TK armies and it's nice to see the different unit types.

Smokemeakipper - Blue FTW! I like how the purple and orange compliment each other for the cloaks.

Sorry if I missed anyone rolling a 3

Ister Flersson - Congrats on getting an army painted up, looks really good, however now you need to pick another to start, go on, you know you want to ;)

Skimming through the posts, thanks all for the comments so far, it really is very encouraging and I'm really glad I signed up for this.

@ Vaiuri - Unsure about the BT base, he's almost done, Think I may not base him this month while considering something special to stand him on, Tyrion or a Bretonnian knight possibly?

@ Paull and Cathexis - WHEN????

31-01-2011, 20:52
First off, i'm on the Road, so pics got to weit til I am Home again.

Army: Vintage Orcs and Goblins, full metal

Unit 20 Marauder Orcs, Late eighties, early nineties.

Points with shields, light armour and full command they should come out at 160.

Painting As before, assorted greens, brOwns and the odd red detail to tie Things together. I try to pick out all the detail on these lovely old models.

No modelling extravaganza.

Highs/ Lows The bases still leave me wanting. The models suck up serious time through their rich details alone. It is fun but sometimes I laxk motivation as I have to invest precious time.

Up next: After three units of infantry it is time to ride. I have a good bunch of oldschool marauder boar riders. It will be either eight or sixteen of them.
I guess we are lucky to be seeing four ...

Here be piccies when I come home

With hours to spare!

Month 1 saw me start to paint a vermin lord for a skaven army, only for me to then back out and switch to dark elves - to make up for this, I painted a Supreme Sorceress:

Month 2 and 3 saw me play my two jokers as I caught up with the Dark Elves.

I've just finished my Death Hag and Cauldron of Blood for month 4! Here are my photos - these are just iphone placeholder shots for now - better photos to come when I picture my month 5 stuff in the next week or so! I'll get in sync with feedback for all in month 5, suffice to say great stuff from everyone so far!

Now, where is that month 5 thread? ...

01-02-2011, 16:30
Probably in the same place where we can find Harry...
He tends to be busy though, so it might take a moment. Otherwise I might start it, or maybe Malorian.

In the meantime, I'll go and make some tables.

01-02-2011, 18:07
Lol, if he doesn't sig that, I might!

Right, comments (dice roll 5) and responses for the month.

ScytheSwathe - good clean painting there dude, get them based up though.

juicytomatoes - good stuff, I especially like the Carrion. And comedy names.

Baggers - Pics a bit dark, but the overall effect is great. You must be cursing doing the point sink models first though.

Shep - Lovely stuff, very crisp painting.

SamVimes - Line of Sight be damned eh Sam? Those things are huge. Like the one with the relief on the front.

@juicytomatoes - Well, I'm still trying. I think the humour might dry up soon though.

@Malorian - Hmmmm, if I can just find some ripper guns, I might have the makings of a(nother) Guard army yet.

@Doi - Cheers dude.

@Vaiuri - Ginger Rhinox eh? Sounds like a plan, I'll see what I can do.

@Baggers - Cheers dude, I'd model up Mel Gibson, but there is no room for midgets in this army.

@Jericho - Cheers dude, yeah, getting there, slowly, but each model is another chunk of points out of the way.

@ScytheSwathe - well, they haven't been varnished yet, so I guess the copious amounts of Devlan Mud are causing the reflective coating. :p

Lots of people not adding dice rolls to their posts or there may have been more comments.

Roll on the Feb thread, I have something special for it.

01-02-2011, 19:52
Lol, if he doesn't sig that, I might!

Well, everyone needs a table. No fun about that. Very serious business, you know.

01-02-2011, 20:01
I am in from work.
I have a table from Braad.
and i'm not afraid to use it.
New thread up very soon.

01-02-2011, 20:25
Was that the oak one?

01-02-2011, 20:28
English Oak. Accept no substitute. None of this pine rubbish. :D

Threads up.

01-02-2011, 20:38
My stuff's already in there!

No oak, but a lot of green!

01-02-2011, 21:14
@Braad. Could you please drop out my Chaos army ... I never really got going.
I have put them on hold until the next Tale and the release of the Forge world book.
